Scout Bowl II

Scout Bowl II — the offense-versus-defense scrimmage featuring scouts and redshirts — was as entertaining as Tuesday’s event.

Wideout Terence Bell continued to impress. He scored on a 68-yard play in which he hurdled three fallen defenders; made a leaping one-handed catch, and scored the game-winner on a tipped pass into the end zone.

The most innovative play came when David Graves fired a pass to Justin Clapp, who ran to his left, then lateraled to Graves.

Right tackle Sean Shigematsu delivered the biggest hit, flattening defensive end Desmond Dean on what was a borderline crackback block. Shigematsu and left tackle Jordan Loeffler appear to be the Warriors’ future perimeter blockers.

Cheering on SMU for a win so that can get bowl eligible. They only get Marshall and East Carolina left to prove themselves. Though there having O problems, hope they work out that kink and get out here again. America needs to see Mack and Jones butting minds and heads on live tv.

Unfortunately, the UH Hawaii versus SMU Mustangs matchup will not occur this year. For the first time since its inception, The Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl will not play at TCU stadium as it is undergoing renovations and the game has moved to Gerald Ford stadium on SMU campus. If SMU is bowl eligible, they will be obligated to host the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl this year. Bad timing.

A great choice adding the two Texas schools to the WAC. Texas is good in football whether NAIA, Div-III, or Div-II. I would have preferred Portland State as its closer to Hawaii geographically and of course saving on travel costs. Denver and Montana would be icing on the cake. No name schools but look what Boise accomplished.

  17. bighilofan2 November 10, 2010 6:51 am

going to middle Texas is like going to Molokai. gotta catch 2 planes from Hilo. 😀

Tru tru analysis with traveling to middle texas comparing to Molokai.

so, Southwest air is favoring to lock up the San Antonio – Oahu route? Might be the happening buzz word soon.

  20. Garret November 10, 2010 6:57 am

SDSU’s head coach is on the short list of candidates for the Minnesota job. That could unleash a chain reaction of coaching hires on the west coast…something to keep track of. SDSU has $10 million in student athletic fees to help them attract new coaches if they lose Hoke.

By the way, the openings at Minnesota worry me because UH has a good OL coach with a lot of ties back there. If their new coach wants an OL coach with recruiting roots back in Minnesota, Big 10 assistant coaching salaries dwarf what UH pays.

The latest word is that the University of Minnesota has San Diego State’s Brady Hoke on its list of serious football coaching prospects.

Hoke’s Aztecs are 7-2 and will play at No. 3 Texas Christian (10-0) on Saturday.

Hoke, 52, who is from Kettering, Ohio, coached defense at Michigan for eight years before becoming head coach at alma mater Ball State, where he finished 12-1 in 2008. He is in his second season at San Diego State, where his quarterback coach is Brian Sipe, the former Cleveland Browns QB. In Hoke’s first season at San Diego State, the Aztecs finished 4-8.

Meanwhile, Colorado’s firing of Dan Hawkins this morning adds competition to the Gophers’ coaching search. And Arizona State could have a head coach opening soon.

  21. gigi-hawaii November 10, 2010 6:59 am

Aw, it’s too bad that SMU (if eligible) will be forced to host a bowl at their own stadium. Couldn’t an exception be made? Would love to watch a SMU-UH game on Xmas Eve.

  22. Garret November 10, 2010 6:59 am

Cody Hawkins is staying at Colorado to be their starting QB. In 2 weeks, Dan Hawkins will return to Colorado for Cody’s Senior Day…with Cody possibly breaking Colorado’s passing record on that day. The media will have a field day with that uncomfortable scene.

Aaaaaaaahhh… To my favorite Marauderette Cheerleading Dance Patnah- Hau’oli La Hanau!

USTA, Texas State and Denver- Welcome to the WAC.

  24. Garret November 10, 2010 7:07 am

If Montana does not join the WAC, the next school that leaves the WAC (La Tech to C-USA? Any school to MWC? UH indy?) will end the WAC as a football conference. I don’t see any options to get that 8th team to have the minimum for a football conference.

So, Montana’s decision in a week or so will be very, very important…

  25. Garret November 10, 2010 7:09 am

This week may be a bye week, but it is one of the most important weeks of the year for next season. The backups who are waiting for their chance next season can show their stuff yesterday and today, and the coaches use the only bye week to visit recruits.

This is another reason why the Hawaii Exception has been devalued. Schools use bye weeks to visit recruits, but UH and any team using the Exception only has 1 week to visit recruits while the rest of the schools in D-IA have 2 weeks to visit recruits during the season.

  26. Garret November 10, 2010 7:11 am

UH really needs the NCAA to add a 15th week to the season in order to get the 13th game to be a benefit again to UH and the teams that come to Aloha Stadium. When you even have conference members not using the Exception when they play at Aloha Stadium, you know it has been reduced in value.

  27. Garret November 10, 2010 7:15 am

ST mentions the main recruiting grounds for UH:

    Southern California: No WAC school

Northern California: SJSU game every other year there

Las Vegas: UNLV game every other year there

Utah: Utah State game every other year there

    Washington: No WAC school

The prime recruiting areas for UH, which are obvious based on geography, have UH playing in those areas 0 times or 1 time every other year. JD can help this a little by playing games at USC and at U-Dub, but the conference simply does not have attractive recruiting spots for UH. Just 1 conference school in California is a major problem…it is too bad that the state of California is hurting so UC-Davis and others do not have the money to go to D-IA right now.

Don’t laugh but that’s the same thing we though of Boise State and Utah State when they came into the WAC.

But I would rather go to Texas State, San Antonio or Denver than going to Boise or Fresno!

Both Texas school has an enrollment of over 30,000 + More than doubles Nevada.

Texas State Strutters: Second oldest dance team in any major Texas university and currently the largest drill team in the nation plus they are all Texas Beauties.

That’s how all the WAC teams recruits.

Yep, San Antonio is a great place to visit. As for Denver and Dallas, not so much. But they are nice cities in their own right.

  39. expat November 10, 2010 8:45 am

So far Dan Hawkins has exhibited a ton of class on dealing with his termination. Of course getting $2M to leave helps shield the blow.

Hard to imagine that Wazzu keeps Wulff for much longer. His record is really unacceptable and has not really shown any improvement. If they want to get in the HC scramble along with Colorado & Minnesota they have to get going. With all the conference realignments coming into play next year and the HC changes it should be interesting. Hawkins would be a good OC pickup for someone.

  40. Shoko November 10, 2010 8:50 am

WSU’s coach is the lowest paid HC in the PAC-10. You get what you pay for. 😉

    gigi,

not sure if jones or his team has a choice but if he is committed to SMU they will abide with this obligation. whomever made the final decision to have the game at SMU stadium must have wanted the team stay put thus providing fans with another shot at seeing this team play again.

  58. HawaiiMongoose November 10, 2010 9:33 am

Garret, re #24, I’m thinking that if Montana doesn’t come aboard then Benson and the WAC presidents immediately have to start working on Plan B. The conference must add a 9th football school not only for scheduling purposes but also as an insurance policy against losing another member. Although there are no available alternatives to Montana for 2012, if the effort starts now it might be possible to line up a candidate for 2013 or 2014, and I expect the WAC could secure an exemption from the 8-team minimum for a year or two if it had another football school in the pipeline.

As far as what school to target, my nominee is Sacramento State. There are good reasons for the WAC to prefer UC Davis or others, but Sac State has the most motivation to make the move. While UC Davis is comfortable having its non-football sports in the Big West, Sac State is stuck sending its non-football teams to far-flung Big Sky outposts like Grand Forks, Greeley, Flagstaff and Bozeman. Travel in the WAC would actually be an improvement for Sac State which is not the case for just about anyone else. Also Sac State has a larger athletic budget ($16 million) than at least three current WAC members, has a big enough stadium for FBS, is located in a large market with no NFL competition and easy travel access, is already a WAC associate member in baseball, and has a president and AD that have at least paid lip service to being interested in someday joining the WAC.

    http://www.txstatebobcats.com/news/2010/9/1/FB_0901105807.aspx

There will be a lots of coaches and players want to stay and play in this Stadium then go to Oklahoma or Nebraska and able to come to Hawaii to play us.

Our kids in Hawaii will have a new opportunity to get scholarship from better learning institution (then Fresno or Nevada) and get to come home every other year.

Mac, Shoji, Arnold, and Takahara only have so much to give to Hawaii students.

Watching the BSU game against UH, I kinda chuckled every time the lady mentioned a “sold out” Bosie stadium.

Why, because get only 35,000 seats; including the “box” ones. Is this correct?

Understand that they are shooting for 53,000 in the near future. The better hope that the coaching staff stays put and keep the winning tradition or else many empty seats!

  72. madeinhawaii November 10, 2010 10:17 am

    Okole Maluna,

I agree with your sentiments. Both Texas schools will improve dramatically once they are D-1a. The reason is backing, student body size… and rivalry between the many Texas schools. Warriors may be top dog for a season or two.. but watch out! These two schools may turn the table quicker than we can blink an eye.

  73. Okole Maluna November 10, 2010 10:19 am

Pomai: I asked this before and I will ask again, has anyone seen SJSU play this year? We cannot take these guys lightly or it will bite us in the arse…

No Worry, Be Happy as they say in Paradise Island.

Before I forget and score gets taken:

    Warriors 45 Spartans 0

Our Warriors will be so fired up after Boise our Defense will finally shot out SJS team down!

How long has it been since Hawaii gave up “0” Zero?

And after this they will shot out the rest with NMS and UNLV.

I actually think that UTSA will be a good program from the get go, they might not have a winning season the first year or so but I feel they will be good for the WAC. One thing that benson needs to do is put a hefty departure clause in the WAC for all schools.

From a softball point, UTSA would be interesting to have. They were the FORMER NCAA D1 leaders in home runs in back to back seasons in for the 2003 and 2004 seasons I think…

JJ’s heart is in the Hawaii Bowl but your right, boosters at SMU dictate them staying for the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl. The people that pay JJ too. He would raise the anger of all SMU heirachy if he took off for the Hawaii Bowl. UH could switch Bowl’s and go there, but UH would anger the bigwigs of the Hawaii Bowl never to be forgiven. Anyway, I don’t think the Armed Forces Bowl wants UH Hawaii. They either will take someone from MWC or Army. It is after all, a armed forces bowl. June Jones made the biggest turn around in NCAA history turning the previous years Von Appen tragedy of 0-12. to a winning season. June Jones made the biggest SMU turn around in SMU history from dreary win loss seasons to the first bowl game in 25 years. He is like Chris Peterson, a great motivator, a winner all the way!

Hawaii SHOULDN’T go play in the Armed Forces Bowl just to play SMU.

UH is obligated to the Hawaii Bowl.

I used to question this, but then realized with no Hawaii Bowl, UH would pretty much have no post season every year regardless of winning record. (See: 2001 9-3 season)

An SMU-less 2010 Hawaii Bowl would not be the end of the world. Besides, personally I would rather play a team like Houston as they have more national appeal.

Your absolutely right. After the 2001, 9-3 Warriors weren’t invited to a bowl, powers to be with the help of ESPN help create the Hawaii Bowl for UH. Bobby Curran always said if Hawaii was out of a BCS Bowl game, the only post game they would accept is the Hawaii Bowl. They owe their allegiance to them for what they did for UH. The blogger is right, it’s not the end of the world without SMU. There are good teams out there that would be good opponents against UH Hawaii in our bowl.

If you want to play against Duke and others in the ACC, by al means chose Boston College. It will provide you exposure and challege your offensive and defensive skills.

If you want a school and community that offers a very special kind of “family” feeling, Hawaii is your best choice. When we speak of “Ohana”, we include all student athletes into a very select family where you play for an entire State. A place where youngsters will call you, tug at you for recognition, and seek your smile and maybe even an autograph. Where older “aunties and uncles” will smile and shake your hand and even (((hug))) you; thanking you for being a part of their lives and Hawaii.

Yes, Domiene, Hawaii is a very special place like no other, but it can be experienced only if you chose to be a Rainbow on Friday, November 12, 2010.

  98. RupertDaStupert November 10, 2010 12:06 pm

JJ is still a bit hurt UH did not offer him a “thank you for job well done” contract extension before the 2007 year ended. HF could be blamed for that. He set UH sports back 20 years. Hugh Yoshida should be blamed for that hire as well as Hugh’s close friend “Fred Von Appen”. And I believe SMU football schedule is pretty much filled up for 5-6 years ahead. JJ was depressed in Hawaii pretty much from 2004. Not because he lost the love of Hawaii. He begged HF to open a assistant coaching position for old friend Mouse Davis. HF said he couldn’t. JJ being smart, got to finnagle a way to get Mouse on board. But June was still depressed. So he begged old friend Jerry Glanville to join him here in 2005. Jerry did not want to come. He had no interest in Hawaii. He loved living in the deep south. But June begged him. Jerry gave in and did it for an old friend. He diplomatically hid that he did not want to come to Hawaii. Finally, in 2006, he had enough and left for the HC job at Portland State. With Mouse and Glanville gone, JJ masterminded a unforgettable 2007 season. It made him happy of course but when HF snubbed him by not extending his contract with a raise before the 2007 year ended, it was the final straw for JJ. What depressed him in 2004 broke the straw. JJ left not because he lost his love for Hawaii. He had personal reasons dealing with the State legislature and the way the UH athletics was run poorly. He will always love Hawaii and Hawaii’s people and will retire here someday just like Dick Tomey.

    ST,

  111. harrisburg November 10, 2010 12:43 pm

, This information is really good and I will say will always be helpful if we try it risk free… So if you can back it up , That will really help us all. And this might bring some good repute to you. The diet of human beings prior to the arrival of agriculture, technology and civilization is known as the Paleolithic Diet , This Stone Age diet, in short, consisted of mainly lean red meat and vegetables. In this type of diet animal meat is consumed in large quantities and 45 to 65% of the energy needed by the body is derived from it. Over and over again, life expectancy studies related to diet, including by the World Health Organization (WHO), have concluded that Americans and Europeans would do better to eat more like third world peoples as the options provided by their additional wealth have most often lead to poor nutritional choices. This is the same basis for the USDA based their popular food pyramid in 1994 … Researchers at Harvard have only suggested perhaps tweaking the food pyramid by replacing some dairy products and read meat with more fruits, vegetables, and fish while also emphasizing the importance of improving the ratio of “good” to “bad” cholesterol… Plus, exercise not only makes weight loss much easier, but also lowers blood glucose levels, decreases blood pressure, improved circulation, and increases one’s metabolism. Good regular sleep patterns are also just as important. Diets based on USDA recommendations include DASH, American Diabetic Assoc, Weight Watchers, and Jenny Craig… When children understand how important “real food” is and where the natural ingredients of our food come from, they will increase the general population’s appreciation for preserving our natural environment and limiting toxins and polluting processes in our world. We may even trend back to the time when people stepped outside their homes to interact with family and neighbors in home and community gardens and block-party barbeques, Does anybody even remember how nice those days were?

  113. Garret November 10, 2010 12:57 pm

One more reason why the WAC has less money than the MWC: bowl game payouts. The MWC has 2 bowl games that pay over $1 million, the WAC has 0.

    WAC bowls:

Hawaii Bowl: $750k (the minimum for a bowl game)

    Humanitarian Bowl: $750k

    Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl: $750k

    New Mexico Bowl: $750k

    MWC bowls:

    New Mexico Bowl: $750k

    Poinsettia: $750k

    Armed Forces: $750k

Las Vegas Bowl: $1.1 million (used to be $1 million, they added $100k starting this year)

    Independence Bowl: $1.1 million

    http://www.collegefootballpoll.com/bowl_games_bowl_schedule.html

  114. NCAA November 10, 2010 12:59 pm

You only live once. If I was born, raised, and lived in a third world country I would eat like a third world person. Since I live in the USA, I eat as I like and within my budget. 😎

  115. Garret November 10, 2010 1:03 pm

If what I’ve read is correct, the New Mexico Bowl will be increasing its payout from $750k to $1.25 million. They are increasing the payout by $500k because they want to get a Pac-10 or Big 12 team instead of a WAC team to play a MWC team. So, the MWC will get $500k more per year and the WAC will lose a bowl game.

This is similar to how the Alamo Bowl increased its payout from $2.25 million to $3 million for each team in order to get a higher choice of Pac-10 and Big 12 teams. The Holiday Bowl was outbid (they pay $2.2 million each) so the Alamo Bowl will pick before the Holiday Bowl.

  117. Garret November 10, 2010 1:12 pm

    HawaiiMongoose,

I hear what you are saying about wanting Sac State to join the WAC if anybody leaves…but Sac State simply doesn’t have the money to move up to D-IA. The California budget situation is BRUTAL right now for the public University systems. The donors have also closed their checkbooks due to the economy.

Plus, the California public University systems have to deal with a horrible $20 billion or so hole in their pension plans. 10+ years ago they decided they were “overfunded” in the pension and that they NEVER NEEDED TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE PENSION FUND AGAIN. The assumption they made was that the stock market would always go up and that increase would provide for their needed pension funds. There are a lot of highly paid people in the University systems that approved that idiotic assumption.

This year they realized they have to start contributing money to the pension fund. They realized they are WAY behind on contributions (not surprising when you skip a decade or more…). They aren’t getting *any* extra money from the State, so that means the pension contributions are coming from their current budget.

  119. NCAA November 10, 2010 1:14 pm

    Pomai,

I’m sure there will be another 7+ win team from C-USA. The C-USA teams with 6 wins will be playing against each other in the next few weeks.

  120. Garret November 10, 2010 1:16 pm

As of right now there is only one team in C-USA that is bowl elgible That is #25 UCF. Now what happens if no others are, do we lower the bar and let a 6-6 team play??

    Pomai,

There are actually *4* C-USA teams that are bowl eligible and they are expected to have at least *7* bowl eligible teams this year. In fact, C-USA is expected to get some of the bowl spots from the WAC or MWC since they only have 6 bowls right now and the WAC and/or MWC are not expected to have enough bowl-eligible teams (because TCU and possibly BSU will be in BCS bowls).

You have to remember that 6-6 is bowl eligible. Unfortunately for the Hawaii Bowl, a 6-6 team may be coming and a team no better than 7-5 can be hoped for. The latest projections I saw had either UTEP or Southern Miss going to the Hawaii Bowl.

  128. Garret November 10, 2010 1:26 pm

    Pomai,

The Hawaii Bowl doesn’t get to just choose Houston. When you pay the minimum payout and have the highest travel costs, other bowls get a say also. I haven’t read any projections that have Houston going to the Hawaii Bowl–they are slated for a “better” (higher-paying) bowl.

  129. Garret November 10, 2010 1:28 pm

By the way, the NCAA is actually considering legislation that will allow teams with LOSING records to be bowl-eligible. The problem is that they keep approving bowl games and have had years in the past where they were close to not having enough bowl-eligible teams.

So, the lowest paying bowls (like the Hawaii Bowl) could someday see teams with 5-7 records in it. Considering 1 of those wins would be against a D-IAA school, that is really sad.

  130. Old Diver November 10, 2010 1:28 pm

Too bad the losing record bowl eligible rule is not in place now. Can anyone say Notre Dame?

  133. Garret November 10, 2010 1:36 pm

By the way, rivals says that SMU has the #46 (by average recruit rating) or #50 (by points) recruiting class right now, well above most non-AQ schools. They have 1 4-star commit, 13 3-star commits, and some of their other 22 commits haven’t been evaluated yet. They have no depth this year and I think that UH would beat them badly if they came to the Hawaii Bowl, but they are clearly building a foundation.

  134. Garret November 10, 2010 1:38 pm

Scratch that, they have 21 commits–the list I glanced at had Blake Muir listed for them when he’ll be a Warrior instead. Muir was one of their players that hadn’t been rated yet.

  135. Pomai November 10, 2010 1:40 pm

Garret I know that, but still would rather see UH vs UH rather than any others. As far as the bowl games go, I think it’s time to redo these also, between the BcS and Bowls it’s a mess.

    It was Fort Ord.

Unfortuantely for us, we got in when the meningitis was rampant and we were confined to our “company area” which meant the street was our boundary. No mixing with other trainees at the PX or theater ( once we marched all the way down only find another company there and back we went ). Couple guys next to our company died; real scary!

Just before end of training, i got the measles, but hid it from the NCOs. Went throught bayonet course feeling lousy, but was able to secure an “expert badge”. After all the tests were complete, I went on sick call and stayed in the hospital for 3 days. Then, my friends from the Big Island visited and said they were clearing post in 2 days. Doc came by and wanted my “temp” so I stuck the thermometer under running water to bring it down and called the doc who gave me the “stink eye” but released me. Then it was a mad scramble to clear post and catch the bus for SF International. Later, I head Ord had a measles epidemic.

Only time I got off post was for “guard duty”. My post was an unused warehouse near the Japanese restaurant over looking Monterey Bay.

    Fun times at basic training!

  140. Garret November 10, 2010 1:44 pm

    Pomai,

If you are talking about what you rather see, I’d rather see UH play a Pac-10 team. However, the facts are that the Hawaii Bowl pays the minimum and has high travel costs (that week in a Waikiki hotel for the entire team, cheerleaders, etc., and the airfare is pretty substantial!).

The Hawaii Bowl is lucky that C-USA doesn’t mind losing money to go to the Hawaii Bowl. If C-USA got a few higher-paying bowls added, they would probably dump the Hawaii Bowl just like the Pac-10 did. The MWC makes more money on their other bowls, so the Hawaii Bowl might end up with a MAC or Sun Belt school.

The whole college sports scene is so wacked, just like most things money changes everything.

    Pomai,

You are one of the biggest supporters of Wahine sports. You have to know that *Title IX* changed everything. Schools went from making a profit on Athletics to losing millions every year…if there were no Title IX, some sports like women’s tennis would be cut out and those losses would go away. When almost all schools lose millions, they HAVE to try to maximize the money they can bring in.

We have to face those facts. Title IX changed everything. Everything else (grab for big TV money, conference realignment, etc.) is just a reaction that every school made to try to make more money so their Athletic Departments don’t kill their University’s budget.

  145. Pomai November 10, 2010 1:52 pm

But Central Florida is good too. They played here against Nevada and won the 2005 Hawaii Bowl.

  151. A-House November 10, 2010 2:01 pm

If there are too many bowl games, why does the NCAA keep adding games? Why not reduce to keep costs down with fewer teams being able to qualify.

Speaking of “additional costs”, I heard that the Sugar Bowl committee dictated which hotels would be appropriate for teams to stay at thus making it more expensive for Hawaii. Is this true for all BCS games? KEEP UP THE IMAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ARe the Jones around?

Interesting to see that Auburn and BSU are predicted to meet in the Sugar Bowl. Say the 3rd and 4th teams standing? Now, compare that to 2008 when Hawaii, then #10, met Georgia – a co-#1 with Ohio State and LSU. Very interesting. A game doomed to fail for Hawaii so individuals can say non-AQ teams cannot play with the big boys! Is that a reason why BSU playe TCU in the Fiesta Bowl last year? Afraid to see non-AQ teams beat up on “top tier BCS teams”?

That’s why I HATE it that the iPhone is coming to Verizon. Dunno why Verizon wants to threaten their deals with Motorola and Android as they have a good thing going, but at least VZW owns pretty much the BULK of the cell phone towers out there so VZW SHOULD be able to handle the jump in usage.

Is it just me, but I just can’t get excited about UTSA, Texas St., and Denver being in the WAC and making it a strong conference. I like the idea of all of UH’s other sports being in the Big West, other than football. Of course, that seems like being an independent in football, but this is what Jim Donovan and others involved need to look at. I am sure Jim Donovan has been thinking about this for a long time now. He will do what is best in the long run for the University. Partners like Hawaiian Airlines, Boyd Gaming, Outrigger Hotels, and the big one, ESPN, will be critical in the final analysis.

On another note, congratulations to Shane Victorino for winning his 3rd straight Gold Glove Award. And to think he was recruited to play football at Hawaii by June Jones. Victorino made the right choise as it turned out because he’s now a multi-millionaire living in Las Vegas.

On last night’s Call the Coach show, Coach Mac said he has a recruit who is 6’7″ fro Australia and another guy from either New Zealand or Samoa who was 6’9″. I don’t think he said what position. He said he also needs a pass rusher, some linebackers, some slots, one running back, and you always need OLs and DLs.

“Just Win” means more now. UH football is King in the new WAC, SHOULD be KING, and really has no choice but to be KING in the new WAC football landscape.

    Texas State

    University of Texas San Antonio

    Utah State ???

    LaTech ???

    Idaho

    San Jose State

    New Mexico State

Look at this and tell me that we have no chance of owning the new WAC in 2012?

Schedule strong in non conference play and romp the WAC season… this is all we can do at this point and hope to God someone with stability comes calling before they find the contact information for Utah State and LaTech.

    A-House,

If you think about it, teams find out that they will be going to the Sugar Bowl only a short time before the game. It would *not* be possible for any school to book an entire hotel in New Orleans over the busy Holiday period with that short notice. So, the Sugar Bowl *has* to book the hotels for the teams and tell them where they are staying.

The BCS bowls do force schools to bring their cheerleaders and a few of the bigwigs from the school. But a school should send those people to a bowl game anyway.

  168. Garret November 10, 2010 2:49 pm

    Kazz,

It is *not* a coincidence that the iPhone is rumored to be coming to Verizon in January and Verizon will finish putting up LTE towers covering 100+ million people by December. Plus, the places (like Hawaii) that won’t get 4G towers right away will have gotten upgraded 3G base stations *before* Verizon adds the iPhone. In fact, people will soon be able to talk surf the web simultaneously on their Verizon smartphones due to the 3G upgrade…I never cared about that, but Apple sure does.

When AT&T added the iPhone, they waited years before they had a plan to upgrade their network to handle the traffic. Verizon is upgrading its network *before* they add the iPhone. The only 4G LTE smartphones on Verizon for *17* months will be Android phones from LG, Motorola, HTC, and Samsung…Apple won’t come up with their LTE phone until the summer of 2012. So, the Android phones will be on a completely different network (10x faster!) than the Verizon iPhones.

I’m actually giving a lecture on some of this stuff on Friday. I’ve gone on way too long so I’ll stop now. Bottom line is that I wouldn’t worry about Verizon’s network. By the way, did you realize that Android smartphone users use *more* data than iPhone users? Verizon might actually have less network load after getting the iPhone.

The commit from Australia is Blake Muir. He’ll be enrolled at UH in January.

  170. Buffoman November 10, 2010 2:52 pm

If what the books says is true (Death to the BCS), Bowls make money on the backs of the teams who participate. yes our payout may be less but what is demanded by the bowls is never made public according to the book and that is where payouts may all be equal. In other words, we may pay out $750k vs another “name Bowl” that pays out $1.25 M. But Hawaii Bowl may be saying that it’s only x # of tickets the team would be responsible for and they would cover the cost for the team and coaches no more. The “other Bowl” may say well to play you need to sell x + 5000 tickets (or eat the cost) and because you have a great marching band bring them, at your expense. According to the book many teams have lost a ton playing in these bolws because of the demands put on them to play.

be interesting to see what each is demanding a participant to see if it really is a raw deal to stay at home and play in the more “glamorous” “other Bowl”.

It’s all about the money. Again, if there is truth to what was written, Bowls rarely loose money; schools loose.

  171. Garret November 10, 2010 2:52 pm

Forget about getting some big-pocket sponsor for the Hawaii Bowl. The Hawaii Bowl *tried* to get more money, but failed. Remember the announcement last month of the long-term contract for the current Hawaii Bowl sponsor to continue being the sponsor? The deal is done and no big-pocket company was interested in the Hawaii Bowl.

  172. (Jesse)James November 10, 2010 2:54 pm

Didn’t North Texas have a losing record and still went to the New Orleans Bowl in 2001 because of the tie in with the Sun Belt Conference. That was one of the squawks when UH didn’t make it to a bowl game that year and was one of the reasons for the Hawaii Bowl being started. I seem to recall that…and all the gripe that went on about it. I also thought that that was when the NCAA made the rule about teams having to have 6 wins to be bowl eligible.

  173. Garret November 10, 2010 2:59 pm

    Buffoman,

It *is* true that bowls often require a significant amount of ticket purchases. Lower-tier bowls result in their schools losing money. ESPN makes its money and the bowl organizers make their money, plus tourism is helped some for the local economy for where the bowl is located. The bowls that pay $4 million to each team make a ton for their schools.

The bowls that the MWC, WAC, and C-USA have all seem to have the same requirements for ticket purchases and so on. The big differences are the plane travel and hotel costs. BCS bowls require HUGE ticket purchases, but they pay so much money that it doesn’t matter.

The book *failed* for me because it failed to go over the real disparity in college athletics–regular-season TV money. If we killed the BCS system and went back to the old system, the WAC would get millions *less*. If we went to a playoff system like the NCAA basketball tournament, the WAC would get millions *less*. It might be nice to see a real champion on the field, but the result would be millions less for the non-AQ conferences.

Look at how the old system worked and how the NCAA basketball tournament distributes its money. Replacing the BCS with either or them means LESS money for UH.

  174. Garret November 10, 2010 2:59 pm

Wow, I’ve been waiting 3 hours for a big business call that never came…it sure gave me lots of time to blog. Got to go now.

  175. NCAA November 10, 2010 3:02 pm

    Mr Garret,

Why forget about getting big-pocket sponsors? Doesn’t hurt to keep looking and asking. Just because you fail doesn’t mean you should stop or quit. Who knows, down the road the Hawaii Bowl may get a big-pocket sponsor. If you stop asking you’d never know.

  176. That’s more like it.

  177. Garret November 10, 2010 3:05 pm

Mississippi State turned in Cam Newton’s recruiting situation to the SEC in *January*, but nothing happened due to procrastination on both sides.

Mississippi State University acknowledges that it contacted the Southeastern Conference office in January of 2010 regarding an issue relating to its recruitment of Cam Newton.

    http://wareagleextra.blogspot.com/2010/11/mississippi-state-acknowledges-it.html

  178. Garret November 10, 2010 3:10 pm

    NCAA,

You are correct, but hoping for a big-pocket sponsor for the next few years is not going to happen because the contract is signed. The companies being talked about (eBay, etc.) are far more likely to sponsor a game near where they are headquartered. The Hawaii Bowl has been around for years, and before that the Aloha and Oahu Bowl, and *no* big-pocket sponsor has been interested.

Even when the economy was good people weren’t interested. Now a big-pocket sponsor is far more likely to sponsor a bowl that involves bigger name conferences than the WAC and C-USA (*none* of the WAC or C-USA bowls have a big-pocket sponsor). More corporations are cutting back on sports sponsorships, so the probability of the Hawaii Bowl getting millions of extra dollars is pretty low.

Now I really have to go…

  179. NCAA November 10, 2010 3:19 pm

    Mr. Garret,

Sure the probability may be low, location not ideal, economy is bad, lack of interest, etc. but there’s always a chance if you don’t give up.

Life is full of success stories because of perseverance. If people, business, groups, or entities, quit just because of all the negativity around them, where would we be today?

Scratch one bowl for the WAC. Like I said earlier, the New Mexico Bowl is significantly increasing its payout and dumping the WAC for the Pac-12. So, more money for the MWC ($500k more per year) and 1 less bowl for the WAC.

The expanded Pac-12 has agreed to send a team to the New Mexico Bowl in 2012 and 2013, pending approval by the NCAA’s licensing committee, to play a Mountain West opponent.

“…Pinsoom Tenzing, the only coach the Hawaii women’s soccer program has ever had, announced his retirement today.

“Our soccer program has had two consecutive losing seasons and heads have rolled for lesser indiscretions,” Tenzing said in a prepared statement released by UH. “Jim (UH athletic director Donovan) wants to take the program in a different direction.”

Tenzing helped established the program at the club level in 1992 with the Rainbow Wahine gaining Division-I status in 1994. During his 17 seasons, Hawaii won three Western Athletic Conference championships and advanced to the NCAA tournament in 2007….”

Montana is apparently going to turn down the WAC. So, the next school that leaves for C-USA, MWC, or indy will *end* the WAC as a football conference.

But sources say new UM President Royce Engstrom watched the rivalry between South Dakota and South Dakota State fall apart when SDSU left for a higher level of play, and he doesn’t want to see the same happen between Montana and Montana State. The WAC did offer a waiver to Montana allowing the Griz to play MSU, but the Cats would suddenly be saddled with an inferior number of scholarships, which would make it less appealing for MSU to continue scheduling the series.

Also, Montana’s Board of Regents is likely to vote against the move should it be submitted. Engstrum would be the school official to submit that application.

Another variable on the financial side is a comparison of athletic budgets between the University of Idaho and Montana. The Vandals struggle to compete in the WAC with a budget of nearly $8 million dollars more than Montana’s.

I still don’t understand why Montana thinks they need a waiver to play Montana State — We play an FCS team pretty much every year and have played Big Sky teams in the recent past (Weber State).

South Dakota and South Dakota State both compete in the FCS although SD just recently moved up. It seems like they only had a four year lag behind SDSU — they couldn’t keep the rivalry up for four years? From the archived schedules it doesn’t look like they even tried.

  227. Garret November 10, 2010 9:41 pm

    acmilan,

I am NOT blaming Title IX for all that is wrong with college athletics, and I hope that I did not give that impression. What I was pointing out is that Title IX mandated that schools add a lot of sports and spend a lot more money on sports that lose a lot of money. If you plot the profitability of college athletic departments and the increase in women’s sports due to Title IX, you will see that there *is* a correlation. Being forced to add money-losing sports without giving Athletic Departments any money to compensate for that *permanently* changed college athletics.

I also pointed out that the economy is tough and schools cannot afford to subsidize their athletic departments as much as they used to. When a Pac-10 school like Cal has to cut a whole bunch of sports, you know that the problem is not limited to the lower profile schools like those in the WAC. Does anybody blame Pac-10 schools for making a big money grab for their next TV deal to try to balance their budgets?

Title IX and the 85 football scholarships are a difficult combination for schools, and Athletic Departments with football must be run very differently than those without football. I’ve been at both types of schools and had friends in their Athletic Departments and there is a big difference in the number of sports and the budgetary pressures.

Title IX is *not* responsible for all of for “all that’s wrong with college athletics”. The impact that it has had on Athletic Departments that have D-IA football teams *is* a factor for all of the focus on money in today’s college athletic departments.

basically, i would not recruit schools from montana, sd, nd,but would concentrate my efforts on texas and california. i don’t know what the commish office is thinking about, but somehow he is trying to do things which is not favorable to uh.

    whitey,

It appears that Benson *tried* to get California schools such as UC-Davis and Sacramento State…but they just don’t have the money to move up to D-IA. The budget problems for California pretty much eliminated the chance for the WAC to expand in California. So, Benson got 2 Texas schools…in other words, he did exactly what you wanted.

However, Benson needs to get 1 more school for safety–the WAC needs 9 football schools for scheduling purposes and so that the whole conference doesn’t end if 1 school leaves. Unfortunately, Montana was the only option for the 9th school and they seem to have declined.

  238. Garret November 10, 2010 9:49 pm

    whitey,

Benson *never* tried to recruit schools in SD and ND…that was just talk on this blog. Al’s subliminal message to you about SD and ND is not what the WAC is actually doing.

right now, money is apparently the power and everything else walks. what would uh be like in sports if it had no money and no conference? Is it the end for uh athletics????? For me, the answer is NO!!!!! Now I will live with my convictions and all the negatives. UH athletics is a most desirable program, has a lot to offer, and is highly competitive. I believe that all the excuses that why conferences may not want UH is full of it. Someday, they will all face the same situation and hopefully will not die, but if they do, do not look at me for sympathy.

  243. whitey November 10, 2010 9:56 pm

Garret, right now it may seem that Benson is doing the right thing, but do you honestly believe that he is doing all he can and doing it to his best???? Me, I zm just a simple person, but I have a hard time believing that he is doing anything constructive for the WAC. I may be wrong, but I believe that someone else may be better at his job. I may not know much about econ, but if I was to put money on me and him for marketing, I firmly belive I would win. That is truly sad when someone who has absolutely no connection with WAC can say that.

It’s hard to forget all that transpired but what’s done is done. Move forward and let the so called experts figure it all out. As fans, we just have to support UH and the decisions that affect our future.

dis is what ifound when i giggled University of Texas San Antonio….

Texas-San Antonio has coach, stadium and big aspirations

By Ferd Lewis POSTED: 01:30 a.m. HST, Nov 11, 2010

Larry Coker is enjoying the moment, a harried but blissful November that finds him the only unbeaten NCAA Division I head football coach in the state of Texas.

Of course, Coker notes, it is something of a “honeymoon” period because his school, the University of Texas-San Antonio, won’t actually play its first game until Sept. 3, 2011.

The Roadrunners have painstakingly planned for their future, one that could be hitched to the Western Athletic Conference as soon as this afternoon, pending approval by the UT System Board of Regents at this morning’s meeting in Austin. UTSA and its Interstate 35 “neighbor” Texas State in San Marcos, are expected to accept invitations that will put them in the WAC beginning with the 2012-13 school year.

Whether the University of Hawaii, the WAC’s senior member, will be there to welcome them July 1, 2012 is another question. The Warriors are pursuing hopes of a Mountain West Conference/Big West future with independence in football as a possible fallback.

But as UH ponders the possibility of exiting the WAC, UTSA is embracing a new-look WAC as a launching pad for an ambitious future. Coker, who was 60-15 in six seasons (2001-06) at the University of Miami, took over at UTSA 20 months ago, tasked with building a Roadrunner program from scratch.

They signed their first 24 recruits in the spring added a couple dozen walk-ons and transfers and have been working out this fall essentially on a teamwide redshirt year in preparation for their 2011 debut.

For all the startup headaches that accompany it, UTSA’s head coaching job was much sought after, given the school’s intriguing niche. San Antonio is the largest U.S. city so far without major college or NFL football and has the nation’s seventh largest population. UTSA, which lists an enrollment of 30,300, had strong student backing for the addition of football and has begun recruiting in a state that produces nearly 400 Division I football signees a year.

The Roadrunners will play their games in the 65,000-seat Alamodome and have an $84 million athletic training complex in the works. UTSA will play nonconference games with Arizona, Houston and Virginia in 2013.

Originally, UTSA planned to transition into the Football Championship Subdivision Southland Conference, where its other sports are. But with the openings in the WAC produced by the departures of Fresno State, Nevada and Boise State, UTSA has shuffled its game plan and accelerated its timetable.

With the prospect of UTSA and Texas State, which has been competing at the FCS level, possibly joining Montana, a WAC that already includes Louisiana Tech and New Mexico State will take on more of a geographic reshaping.

Coker says he is mindful of the challenges that would come with his fledgling program playing the Warriors on a regular, conference basis. But, unlike some schools who see the multi-time zone trek as something to be bemoaned, he says the Roadrunners would relish he opportunity to visit Hawaii.

That’s if UH is still around, of course

    So……

    Jim Donovan….

you wait just long enough… being king of the hill… is not a bad spot to be….

    to me….

the good thing about hanging with UTSA and Texas State is that they see themselves as wanting to be rising superstars of Texas. so making long term acquaintances with them now, making them feel welcome, is good for us long term….

and since we’re doing this carefully, so we get a win win for everybody, including those two Texas schools, making honest compacts now for the long term is in all our best interests, thems and us. and I’d drag along all da odda WAC teams too. they’re hangin with us, and that gotta count for sumtin…

With four Heisman trophy winners coming out of the city of San Diego, I think that the University of San Diego would be a good fit in the WAC. USD is comparable in sudent population to Wake Forest and Rice University. It’s close in physical size to SMU and Tulsa in acrerage.

They play some good football and is surrounded by a lot of football talent right on their doorstep.

From what I do no about the school though, I doubt that they would want to get into the FBS category. They seem to prefer the way things are right now.

Hawaii is #1 in turnovers gained and #2 in turnover margin.

You’re a good football team when you are good at turnover margin.

  284. Michigan Warrior November 11, 2010 3:46 am

South Dakota State… they put up a real good fight against Nebraska, before finally losing 17-3.

Kinda getting tired of Montana with their “I wonder what our excuse will be this week” approach to the WAC.

Seems like they might be secretly negotiating with the MWC, instead of taking the long road through the WAC, and the MWC doesn’t want to water down it’s conference and lose it’s bonus multiplier before getting AQ status.

I mean, c’mon… using the Idaho comparison? Really? Idaho was never as successful in football as Montana has historically been. Montana has the money and support, whereas Idaho has never enjoyed that level of comfort and success. Montana can be the next Boise of the WAC, but it feels like they want to avoid the WAC and get that instant invite to the big party.

Man, I better find that adult bookstore and buy me some lottery tickets! Our team sure could use the extra money!

By the way, happy Veteran’s Day, everyone!

  289. Garret November 11, 2010 4:44 am

    whitey,

I agree with you that you could do a better job at marketing the WAC than Benson. Heck, I think that just about anybody could market the WAC better–Benson has put down his own conference as compared to the MWC and he has seemed to be more concerned about BSU than the overall conference’s success.

  290. Garret November 11, 2010 4:51 am

An independent auditor’s report listed a $1,612,417 deficit on spending of $29.6 million for fiscal year 2010, which closed June 30, down from $2,632,408 in 2009.

Athletic director Jim Donovan projected an approximate $800,000 deficit for the 2011 fiscal year, which concludes June 30, 2011, and said, “We believe we can be in the black for (fiscal year 2012) short of any major shock and what happens with the conference situation.”

This is GREAT news! To be fair, FY2011 includes half a year of the Athletic Fee ($950k) and FY2012 has a full year of the fee ($1.9 million). The big thing is that the deficit was down $1 million between 2009 and 2010.

One big difference between FY2009 and FY2010 is that JD and the coaches took 7% pay cuts in FY2010. That saved $77k on Mack’s contract and probably several hundred thousand overall. The pay cuts will also be there in FY2011, but they will get full salaries in FY2012.

  293. Michigan Warrior November 11, 2010 5:43 am

And I have to agree with your #289. Really seems as though Benson was more concerned with taking care of BSU these recent years, than with the dedication he used to show before BSU joined the WAC. Would be nice to get someone from the BigTen, SEC, or PAC12 to run the WAC in the near future… with the know-how of the big conferences, plus connections.

  369. penny stocks to watch November 23, 2010 7:59 pm

Try Direct Reinvestment Plans…Go to wall-street.com. They have a list of companies that have direct reinvestment plans..meaning that you could buy one share at a time..It is the best way to go…especially for an 18 year old…You could save $100 bucks and invest in a Blue Chip Stock such as Apple, Pfizer; Ford; GM; Microsoft; Clorox; Walmart; Cisco; Johnson Johnson; Yahoo; Google; and so many more…Apple is a great company…See if they are on this plan before talking to a broker…or buying on line…The dividends from these stocks go into buying more shares…It is great. That is how I accumulated 180 shares of Pfizer..and 59 shares of Clorox and 60 shares of Johnson Johnson. For you I would go this route…Do a search also Direct Reinvestment Plans for stocks…and see what comes up. Good Luck. This could be your ticket to having alot of money when you are in your 30’s…..think of it as a future investment for our country…Good Luck

Can you do a blog post about how you use this to truly make money?

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

I had a strange idea. I heard in Europe, something like 60% of girls have plastic surgery before age 18 because for girls, being successful is all about grabbing the best guy you can get. best meaning richest. And being physically attractive is naturally the easiest way to snag men.
