Schroeder to play in all-star game

ss-meal1

Former UH quarterback Sean Schroeder has been invited to compete in Saturday’s NFLPA Collegiate Bowl at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

With an assist from UH coach Norm Chow, Schroeder received the invitation this past weekend.

“Obviously, he has a lot of connections in the NFL,” Schroeder said. “He called over there, too, I know, and that obviously helped out quite a bit.”

The NFL Players Association and ESPN sponsor the game. Practices tomorrow through Thursday will be shown on ESPNU. The game will be televised on ESPN2 beginning at 1 p.m. Hawaii time.

Schroeder will be reunited with wideout Chris Gant, who also will play for the American team. Dennis Green is the squad’s head coach. Mike Kruczek, a former Pittsburgh Steeler quarterback, is the offensive coordinator. Kruczek is UMass’ OC, and he was a point recruiter for the Minutemen when Schroeder decided to transfer from Duke in June 2012.

“I got to meet with him, going through the whole process,” Schroeder said of Kruczek. “He’s a real good guy, a really good coach as well.”

Schroeder said this is an opportunity to represent the UH program.

Despite starting only eight games this past season, Schroeder threw for 2,960 yards and 28 touchdowns. UH ranked 19th nationally in passing offense at 301.4 yards per game.

“It’s a credit to my teammates around me, credit to my receivers, the offensive line, the running backs and the coaching staff, as well,” Schroeder said.

For all the physical punishment, and verbal/message board abuse he’s taken….VERY happy to hear that Schroeder will end his college career with a team victory and chance to play in an all-star game.

    Schroeder reminds me of Brady…

  11. haka January 13, 2014 9:07 am

    Go Sean!

It’s very interesting to see where Sean has come from, the criticism he endured and where he is now. I seem to remember a lot of people putting him down when he transferred as a third stringer from a **** team. Well, that team was Duke and they had a very good team and year as they won their ACC division, went 10-4 and nearly beat Texas A&M in the bowl game.

Sean is a very intelligent, tough gamer and he will no doubt, be very successful in the game of life.

Thanks for being a Warrior Sean!

  12. Stephen Tsai January 13, 2014 9:18 am

Schroeder also earned a master’s degree in three semesters at UH.

  13. Stephen Tsai January 13, 2014 9:18 am

  15. Stephen Tsai January 13, 2014 9:23 am

Terrific news for SS. Having Gant to provide some familiarity and trust on go to routes can only help. Work hard this week guys and way to rep the 808.

  26. jm2375 January 13, 2014 9:54 am

ST – 10 semesters isn’t bad, esp for UH. I know a couple of people who took almost 10 YEARS to get the degree.

  27. haka January 13, 2014 10:02 am

the closest thing I got to a degree was sunburn.

  28. SteveM January 13, 2014 10:05 am

    Good morning everyone!

    Congrats to Sean Schroeder!
This was surprising news, but well deserved considering everything he’s been through.

  29. Boolakanaka January 13, 2014 10:27 am

15–ST, Got you beat. 13 Semesters for a B.A. UH wanted me out, they actually called me personally, and notified me that I had close to 170 credits and needed, ASAP to finish the requirements for my degree. They actually asked me to stop taking superfluous classes. So much so, they offered me the last semester free with parking, yes with parking, if I graduated. (Red Rocha, ex BBall coach, was a nice old school cat, and head of parking at the time).

  30. Slugger January 13, 2014 10:41 am

    Good morning, gang!

Congratulations to Chris Gant & Sean Schroeder! Good luck in the game.

    #29:

my last semester, Allen Saunders, Dean of Business, saw me and said, “you still here?”

is there still a 10 year limit to gradate or start from scratch rule?

  32. A-House January 13, 2014 10:42 am

it pains me that I never took advantage of the advantage of the GI Bill – not a single penny!

  33. Turfwar January 13, 2014 11:04 am

Boolakanaka I got Red story too. While working as a student at Hawaii Public Television I ran out of the station in time to see my car being towed. I reported to Red to claim my car and ended up talking about basketball for over an hour. At the end he asked me if I could afford to pay $35 to clear the parking fines I had accumulated over the years which totaled well over $300.00. Nice man that Red. I will always remember what he did for a struggling student working part time for $4.00 an hour.

  34. Boolakanaka January 13, 2014 11:14 am

    33. Turfwar, I feel you. It was actually the 2nd time he helped me out. First time was when I got a notice for hundreds of dollars of parking tickets, apparently parking in Dean and associate provost spaces is frowned upon. Well, this was in my quasi-shady days, I was summoned to Red’s office, and I proceeded to tell Red a whooper of story about most of the tickets being from my sister. Apparently, Red has already made calls to the athletic department, and he replied “… Well, that would be fine, except that you have NO sister??!” Busted!!!!! Eventually, he asked me what I could pay and let me settle the matter–good and wise man!

    Salaries of Huskies. I thought the higher positions would pay more;

but I guess he’s “evening out” the money among more guys.

Keith Bhonapah is low man on the totem pole at 250K.

Washington: According to the Seattle Times, all eight of Chris Petersen’s assistants signed a two-year contract. Here are their salaries, which will be raised by $15,000 in the second year: Defensive coordinator Pete Kiwatkowski ($485,000), offensive coordinator / quarterbacks coach Jonathan Smith ($425,000), offensive line / associate head coach Chris Strausser ($425,000), linebackers / assistant head coach Bob Gregory ($425,000), defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake ($375,000), defensive line coach / special teams coordinator Jeff Choate ($345,000), wide receivers coach Brent Pease ($345,000), running backs coach Keith Bhonapa ($250,000). Tight ends coach Jordan Paopao’s contract details were not released.
