Left tackle Aaron Kia continues to reshape. He is up to 293 pounds, but has maintained his agility with daily sprints and footwork drills.

The Warriors still are trying to sort out their active roster.
There still is a possibility that linebacker Joseph Malabuyoc, who has remained in Hawai‘i this summer,  might secure a spot. Malabuyoc, who is from Canada, was on the spring roster.

    Aaron Kia – looking good.

This is your senior year – go all out.

    Show leadership – by leading. Be the first guy out to practice;

be the last guy off the field.

Play hard – play SMART !!!

    Have a great year.

  6. Stephen Tsai July 27, 2009 12:50 am

From what I’ve heard, Quentin Beaver is not on the 105.
I’ve heard nothing of Gary Nagy, so I assume he’s not on the 105, either.

Good morning Tsaikos. Good to see both Tonga and Wadsworth will get some experience of college football before going on their mission. A Kia looks good.

  13. Garret July 27, 2009 4:39 am

I hope that Tonga and Wadsworth enjoy this season before they go on their mission. Safety is an open position right now so they have a chance to get into the rotation this year.

  14. Garret July 27, 2009 4:40 am

All of Aaron Kia’s hard work in the offseason will be extremely important if the Warriors are going to have a good season this year.

  15. Garret July 27, 2009 4:41 am

Best wishes for Joseph Malabuyoc–remaining in Hawaii showed his dedication to the team, and I’m sure he’s hoping for a roster spot.

Article about how the Titans lack depth in the secondary…which give Ryan Mouton a good opportunity to move up in their depth chart quickly.

While the Titans are pleased with their starters, free agency departures left the group without much proven depth.

So veteran signee DeMarcus Faggins, rookies Ryan Mouton and Jason McCourty, and second-year pro Cary Williams will try to solidify the backup roles while also working on special teams.

“Hopefully they can develop,” defensive backs coach Marcus Robertson said, “and in time, help us from the defensive side of the ball.”

  17. Garret July 27, 2009 4:43 am

Today’s update about Ingram from the Boston newspapers:

Chung is the 10th of the Patriots’ league-high-tying 12 draft picks to reach a deal, leaving just long snapper Jake Ingram, a sixth-round pick, and linebacker Tyrone McKenzie, a third-round pick, as those who have not been reported to have settled on deals.

A call to Ingram’s agent, Wynn Silberman, was not returned yesterday. However, a report on WEEI.com last week said talks had hit a snag over the structure of Ingram’s bonus, with the Patriots wanting to make part of the signing bonus payable as a 2010 roster bonus.

There is no great rush with McKenzie because he is out for the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during rookie minicamp in May.

    Q&A with Colt!

Q: Talk to me about you and your situation with the Redskins. Are you looking forward to training camp?

A: Well, I love the team. You can’t ask for a better franchise. The fans are passionate, awesome. I love where I’m at right now. Right now, it’s a big preseason for me. I get to step in this year. They’ve already made it clear that they’re going to play me a ton in the preseason. We get to play four very talented teams and talented defenses, and that’s going to be my test. And right now, it seems like it’s in everyone’s hands. For Jason Campbell it’s his last year (of his contract)—it’s in his hands to go out and earn that second contract. And for me, it’s my chance to go out there for the second year and prove I belong, have a great preseason and show maybe I could be a starter one day.

Q: You looked like you had a ton of fun in your college career.

A: Well it’s hard not to when you’re in Hawaii, right?

  19. Garret July 27, 2009 4:45 am

Q: Talk about the mental part of your game because as a walk-on, it’s hard to end up where you ended up.

A: My cousin (Brad Brennan), who was really my hero growing up, went to the University of Arizona. I followed his path. I went to a prep school. He walked on at the U of A, and he was on that team that went (12-1) and beat Nebraska (in the 1998 Holiday Bowl). He was a big inspiration for me and the one thing I prided myself on was that I was a walk-on at Colorado, I was a walk-on at Hawaii. People really focused on a lot of other things in my career, but that was one thing that really separated me from a lot of people who have had success in the past—the fact that I was a walk-on and I was a kid who went out there and paid his own way and tried to earn it.

  30. Stephen Tsai July 27, 2009 7:15 am

Tonga and Wadsworth both seem pretty tall for safeties.
In the photo, Wadsworth was trying to “stretch.”
Not sure what Alo’s plans are for after this season.

  31. Stephen Tsai July 27, 2009 7:16 am

I wonder what the return rate is for players who go on missions.
Off hand, I can only think of two: Inoke Funaki and Waylon Lolotai. But both went on missions before starting their UH careers.

  32. Stephen Tsai July 27, 2009 7:17 am

There were two players who were supposed to go on missions but never did: Nate Ilaoa and Viliami Nauahi.

  33. Stephen Tsai July 27, 2009 7:18 am

I think Waylon Lolotai will probably redshirt this season.
He’s listed as a defensive end, but I imagine he’ll be a linebacker in the future.

  34. Da Punchbowl Kid July 27, 2009 7:19 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Looks a pair of young, quality safeties. Best of luck to them.

Kia looks lean and strong, I hope he has a great season.

  35. Da Punchbowl Kid July 27, 2009 7:20 am

It’s great to see bighilofan2 back on the active roster. Things weren’t the same without him!

  36. letsgowarriors July 27, 2009 7:23 am

lolotai is already 245, i could see him being a fixture at DE in the future. he has a good HS resume. all state TE 2 years, all-conf LB 2 years, all-conf DE, state champion wreslter 215lb

  37. Stephen Tsai July 27, 2009 7:51 am

I always thought it would be good if, say, you had a 4-minute lead at the end of stage 12, that you start the Tour De France’s stage 13 with a 4-minute headstart. That way you eventually end up with the race’s winner crossing the finish line first. There are too many times the winner is coasting in the middle of the pack during the final stage because he has such a tremendous lead. You can never get a photo finish in the Tour.

If you know of someone with experience in community health issues who is interested in working with the military returning from Iraq or Afghanistan, here is an opportunity for a one-year consultant’s position.

Mental Health America of Hawai`i (MHA) is seeking to contract with a consultant to help manage its Military Initiative. This will focus on the needs of returning military and their families by convening an Advisory Task Force to identify mental health, social, and employment-related issues facing returning National Guard, Reserves, and their families; convening “town hall” community meetings to address concerns relating
to all returning soldiers and their families; and creating an action plan for Hawai`i to address the unmet needs.

Experience in translating discussion into recommendations and policies into action/implementation needed; knowledge of military desirable; understanding of state and federal policy development required.

Compensation: $30,000 available for one year contract.

Start Date: As soon as possible.

Send cover letter and resume to marya@mentalhealth-hi.org. No faxes or snail mail please.

  45. Garret July 27, 2009 8:21 am

This article includes a photo of David Veikune at practice with the Browns along with an article about his signing. The two second round draft picks that haven’t signed contracts yet are competing with each other for a starting spot…so the Browns might be using their desire to get an edge over their competition to get them to take a lower contract amount.

Holdouts will only hurt the team, so brining Mack and Veikune to Berea for the extended rookie camp (which started on Friday) can only increase their chances in becoming impact players. And it allows coaches to build a team without distraction.

So now it’s time to move on to the wide receivers. Both Brian Robiskie and Mohamed Massaquoi, each drafted in the 2nd round, remain unsigned. The Plain Dealer reports that negotiations with Robiskie are not even close.

But since the Browns have two rookie receivers competing for a starting job, it should play into the team’s hands when it comes to negotiations. The receiver that signs and reports to camp first will certainly have a much greater chance at earning a starting job. It’s in each rookie’s best interests to get to camp as soon as possible.

  46. Garret July 27, 2009 8:22 am

Oops, I think that photo was from minicamp and not today’s practice.

Article about how the Titans lost all of their backup CBs from last season and didn’t sign any CB free agents, so they will need one of the two CBs they drafted (hopefully Mouton) to be ready to play as soon as possible. Mouton has a really good opportunity there…but I’m sure that 6th round pick thinks the same thing.

One of the topics we have talked about at length this offseason has been the lack of depth at the corner position. Cortland Finnegan is one of the best corners in the league. Nick Harper is a solid veteran opposite Finnegan, but there are some big concerns about his durability. He will be 35 in September and missed significant time last season because of injury.

Hopefully Finnegan and Harper stay healthy, but this is the NFL, so odds are one of them will miss some time next season. Who steps in behind them is one of the biggest questions for the 2009 Titans. Currently they have Cary Williams and DeMarcus Faggins listed as the back-up corners. Either of those names excite anyone? Yeah, me neither.

The interesting thing to me is this has been the State of Corner since all of the reserves left in free agency, but the only thing the Titans did to help out was draft Ryan Mouton and Jason McCourty in the third and sixth rounds respectively. One of those two guys is going to need to show something in camp to give me a good feeling about the position.

  49. Kekoa July 27, 2009 8:27 am

Gotta saddle up and head out on the H-1 slaughterhouse trail. Had one mean acident here on da ceded lands dis past weekend. Diana, Kimana and our heavily recruited Nephew were coming back from a Grad party.

She had made a left turn at the Kapolei Parkway intersection just minutes prior. Another cousin was at the light waiting to make the left turn not long after her. He witnessed the impact, and the SUV veered off the collision and headed straight for him! Lucky for him that it stopped right in front of his front bumper!

Talk about helpless and frozen in fear! What can you do when you’re at a complete stop and a car comes careening out of control at you! Cousin Terry got out to help the man in the ‘vette, but he said there was no pulse already…sadly confirmed by EMS when they arrived. Of course the drunk driver survived along with her friend. She’ll be haunted by her actions forever…I guess that’ll be her perpetual punishment.

    Let’s be careful out there…please.

Article about the King Kamehameha Classic Football Games that were recently held in Hawaii.

Waits was recently selected to participate in the Elite Sports 10th Annual King Kamehameha Classic Football Games in Honolulu, Hawaii.

More than 200 junior and senior football players from across the country and from Canada spent a week on the islands practicing and also playing NCAA games on the campus of the University of Hawaii and at Aloha Stadium.

The event consisted of nine teams in three divisions with Waits being the starting tight end for the Texas South team.

“I thought it was pretty amazing,” Waits said. “Here I was getting to go to Hawaii to play football. This is kind of really my last football game.

Happy Manic Monday, Tsaikos! Safe travels to our blog host. And great to hear about you going back to school, BG. That’s awesome! Garret, thanks for the Colt, Ryan and Jake updates too.

Looking for a decent one-way fare between Seattle and Toronto on September 13…let me know anyone finds one under $380 (yikes!).

Oh, and anyone looking for good, cheap accommodations in LV, September 19-21? Holding 1 room at Embassy Suites LV for $87 total (King suite with breakfast; 2 nights with taxes incl.).

  108. d1島 July 27, 2009 12:50 pm

Comment from Linfield SID after coming back from the College SID’s Convention. Could be that Twitter may be allowed by the No Clue At All folks soon.

The social networking tool is currently banned for recruiting purposes. That rankles the feathers of SIDs, who simply want to use Twitter to quickly and succinctly communicate bits of information to their fan base, whether it be scores, schedules, highlights and so forth. The current legislation is being reviewed and we could see an addendum to the NCAA by-law before long.

  109. (Jesse)James July 27, 2009 12:52 pm

    d1:

your #108 – isn’t Urban Meyer at Florida and some other big time BCS coaches using twitter, facebook, etc for recruiting purposes?

therefore, if it’s banned by the NCAA, why no investigation by the NCAA?

The ACC is looking to increase their TV revenues when their contract was up–they currently get $6 million per team from TV and the SEC gets $16 million per team from TV (I think the WAC gets somewhere between $100k and $200k per team from ESPN). If the ACC and Pac-10 combined to create their own TV network, they would have a pretty good footprint around the country and the time zone differences would give them blocks of games (with the East Coast game on before the West Coast game).

ACC schools each receive about a $6.1 million payout annually; SEC schools are reporting expected payouts of more than $16 million.

Swofford said the league prefers to re-sign with its current rights holders but is looking at all its options, including creating a joint television network with the Pac-10.

Maryland isn’t printing media guides this year, but they had a 41-page handout for the media printed on regular paper.

Instead, Maryland reproduced 41 pages of black-and-white text on regular copy paper with statistics and bios on key players. Absent were the school records, glossy cover and historical data we’ve grown accustomed to.

Maryland said there will be no regular media guide printed this season . Instead, all the pertinent information will be available online. The school says it will improve the Web site and add more video.

By the way, it was good to see A-Joe on several TV newscasts last week Thursday, singing during ceremonies for the arrival of US Navy’s newest addition to the Pacific’s fleet of submarines. It was A-Joe’s first performance with the Kamehameha Alumni Glee Club. After only one month of rehearsals brother A-Joe was under the lights and cameras welcoming the USS Hawaii to Pearl Harbor. Great job brother A-Joe!

Kekoa, that doesn’t mean the A-Joe loves Sailor Blue more than he loves you. We think of both of you as brothers and during the week of the Army-Navy games, we cheer all of the Armed Forces personnel.

Remember how RGM’s coach said that his demotion was only for one week? Well, now he’s undecided as to whether or not RGM will get his spot back.

No decision has been made yet on whether Rufus Skilern will stay in the lineup in place of Ryan Grice-Mullen.

  137. Kekoa July 27, 2009 5:20 pm

I’m devastated that A-joe has cast favor on the Submariners, even temporarily! Come football season…Grrrr! We’ll be sinking some those Navy boat drivers 2 by 2!

Years ago, before they instituted a law to outlaw speaker systems on pov’s…my friend had one mounted in his car. He was a HAM operator, and had his radio eq. in the dash. Just for fun, he decided to mount a speakers in his grill, with a toggle switch to control it on the dash.

We sometimes would pressure people at the stop light by scaring the bejesus out of them when they were slow to proceed after the light turned green.

We usually said something like this Real Loud, “Eh brah…you goin’ or wat? Da light been green for 10 minutes! One day a very large Samoan male came out of his car, and walked back towards us. We immediately served around him and took off down the street!

The speakers were dismounted the next day.

I know that (when one is) going on a church mission is a personal choice, but it doesn’t make any rational sense to play one year, then go on a mission (disrupting continuity), return & then try to integrate into the program again. It seems so much more sensible to go on the mission first & then come back to the team, otherwise the knowledge & conditioning you gained initially is essentially lost. I’m not speaking from experience however & will defer to real athletes if I’m the one suffering from faulty logic.
