Rolo to Reno; Marrell Jackson signs

Former UH quarterback and offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich yesterday signed a contract to be Nevada’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Rolovich, who was not retained at UH after Norm Chow was hired as head coach, has worked the past month at UMass. But Rolovich, who is still under UH contract through March 31, never did sign a contract with UMass and was there on a “volunteer” basis.

Rolovich has a two-year contract with Nevada (UH limits assistants’ contracts to one year) and a significant raise from what he would have earned at UMass.

Rolovich traveled to Reno from Massachusetts yesterday, and signed last night. Nevada also hired an offensive line coach. There is one more vacancy on that staff, for a running backs coach. (C’mon, Nevada, Brian Smith is available.)

No word yet from Mouse Davis on Rolovich working for Chris Ault.

Defensive back Marrell Jackson of Miami’s Miramar High put his commitment in writing this morning. He is officially a Warrior.

Here’s his highlights: Jackson video.

What happens to that Hawaii OL kid that signed to go to Umass?

I think Rolo applied with Reno “before” accepting UMass.

But they took too long in deciding so Rolo took a good

“first offer”…but when Reno finally decided, it was a

no brainer to accept…sort of like asking the girl you most

want to go to the prom with, but she no give you answer,

so you ask someone you really not hot on…but then,

    like Cinderella, the shoe fits!

  8. madeinhawaii February 8, 2012 9:13 am

Yikes.. this means we play against Rolo next season? Should be interesting, especially if Ault lets Rolo call the plays.

This goes to show that there was some talent on the past coaching staff.

Both Rolovich and Aranda land job as coordinators.

Tormey, who was at Washington State, is Wyoming’s defensive coordinator.

  11. madeinhawaii February 8, 2012 9:15 am

All I can say is, this puts an interesting twist to Norm’s hiring. If Rolo’s offense crushes Hawaii, what will Warrior fans say about moving away from the RnS and Rolo?

  12. Stephen Tsai February 8, 2012 9:15 am

    Sparks?

    He’s still going there.

    A deal’s a deal.

  13. Ipu Man February 8, 2012 9:16 am

Reno likes to use a tight end also, right?

  14. pakegolf February 8, 2012 9:16 am

Ooooo, makes for a lot of drama and stuff that sportswriters love. Good luck to Rolo, except when we beat them!

  15. tom mui February 8, 2012 9:17 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

@11 madeinhawaii – let us hope not!

  16. Stephen Tsai February 8, 2012 9:17 am

Nevada still will be running the pistol.

This is a good move for Rolo. He needed to go away if he wanted any chance to become a head coach.

  17. cheepono February 8, 2012 9:17 am

how’s the off season training going for the current players?

from some of their twitter accounts, looks like they been doing “voluntary two-a-days”. workouts early in the morning then workouts again in the late afternoon.

must be tough waking up before the crack of dawn to work out, then go to class all day, then work out again, then go and study.

  18. Stephen Tsai February 8, 2012 9:18 am

    Pakegolf:

  19. Shoko February 8, 2012 9:18 am

If not mistaken, Nevada offers their assistants one-year contracts.

  20. Stephen Tsai February 8, 2012 9:19 am

And guess which basketball team is coming to town . . .

  21. Kevin February 8, 2012 9:19 am

(I JUST finished writing this prior to the blog being updated, but will leave it as is)

When you are young and you have a family and you’re financial situation in which your family DEPENDS on what you bring in is based on a career that has LIMITED security, it is in the best interest of you as the provider to examine all opportunities thrown at you.

If the Nevada job presented something more favorable financially for the Rolovich Ohana, then so be it.

Values????????????? Unless the Nevada job paid EXACTLY the same as the Umass job and had the same stipulations, bonuses, etc.. Whatever then that’s one thing. If the Nevada job simply offered more and nothing less… then I’d say Rolo’s VALUES of providing as much for his family are correct and his priorities are straight.

It’s easy for others play “Moral Orel” when it is not our personal situation, let alone in the same position and dealing with the same issues of job security in a VERY limited field.

  22. Kevin February 8, 2012 9:20 am

    So… now that Rolo’s situation is CLARIFIED…..

    Anyone care to comment further??????? 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆

Like some of us said earlier… GOOD FOR ROLO!!!

  23. Stephen Tsai February 8, 2012 9:20 am

Not to sneer at UH marketing, but why the heck are they having a “blackout” night?

Isn’t that what used to be known as a power outage?

  24. Ipu Man February 8, 2012 9:21 am

But unlike Cinderella, Rolo now got to go live with ugly step sister…

  25. koakane February 8, 2012 9:21 am

    good chilly morning to all

wishing the very best to rolo and family on his new adventure. good luck and a hui hou

  27. Stephen Tsai February 8, 2012 9:23 am

    Kevin:

    1. It’s more money.

    2. More job security.

    3. Stays in the West (he was raised in the Bay Area, which is about a 5-hour drive).

    4. He received the blessing from the UMass head coach.

  28. Kevin February 8, 2012 9:23 am

Business as usual though… Looking forward to Kaumeyer’s D putting Rolo’s new boys 3 and OUT! 😈

  29. Stephen Tsai February 8, 2012 9:26 am

He wasn’t long for the Northeast, anyway.

When he first arrived at UMass, it was sub-10 degrees.

And UMass requires coaches to wear ties when they recruit.

  30. masatoshi-san February 8, 2012 9:26 am

Rivals.com came out with their top 100 high school prospects for 2013 and they have OG Reeves Koehler (St. Louis School – Honolulu, HI) as the #1 Offensive Guard in the nation and the #67 ranked recruit in the nation. And he only has 3 schools listed: Washington, Utah, and… HAWAII.:)

  31. Kevin February 8, 2012 9:27 am

    ST,

We know now, was posting in response to others already crucifying Rolo on an ASSUMED situation.

Just thought I’d post my thoughts as is in light of the facts to show that one shouldn’t ASSUME.

  32. Gonzo February 8, 2012 9:29 am

IMHO, blackouts are counter-intuitive for a stadium/arena type setting. They make the seats look empty and make the fans almost invisible (regardless of all the yelling and jumping they might do).

Imagine what the vibe woulda been like in the Superdome had Georgia decided to wear red back in ʻ08. Scary.

  33. masatoshi-san February 8, 2012 9:29 am

    Oops… “Reeve” not “Reeves”

  34. madeinhawaii February 8, 2012 9:30 am

If Rolo’s hands were really tied behind his back insofar as play calling was concerned, it will be interesting to see what Rolo can do with his play book. Hopefully Ault will give him free reign (or is that free rein?).

  35. Kevin February 8, 2012 9:30 am

Had to stop by the UH offices before 7am this morning.

Interesting to see who the EARLY birds are.

  36. Chee! February 8, 2012 9:32 am

Good luck to Rolo (except when we play Nevada) and hope Ault luses Rolo’s playbook (w/pistol) I’d like to see what could’ve been in 2011 minus Mouse and Mack..

  37. masatoshi-san February 8, 2012 9:32 am

Why not do a “Green-Out” or half the arena wears green and the other half comes in white?… Wait Hawaii’s colors are green and white right?

  38. Chee! February 8, 2012 9:32 am

    Luses = uses

  39. al February 8, 2012 9:37 am

    congratulations rolo!

great career opportunity for him. we’ll see him on the opposite side of the field this year at the aloha stadium, that should help bring in a few extra fans.

this is great for rolo as he aspires to be a head coach. chris ault, the coaching hall of famer, will be an excellent mentor for him and in the future, a great advocate for rolo’s quest to become a head coach some day.

  40. koakane February 8, 2012 9:38 am

mih on #15 Gae Baek episode kinda slow but picking up

  41. Kevin February 8, 2012 9:38 am

Any REAL Hawaii fan knows GREEN and WHITE are the school colors and always have been. It’s tradition regardless of what others try to claim.

Black outs are fun though from time to time. Black is a nice novelty/gimmick color. Has NO traditional place to be recognized as an official color for the University of HAWAII though.

Black says NOTHING about Hawaii. The only time I recognize the color black in relation to anything represented in Hawaii was when Iolani Palace was draped in black.

  42. Shadow February 8, 2012 9:39 am

Ault is really a “take the reins” kinda guy. As AD, he nominated himself as the HC. I believe Rolo will not have total OC responsibility, he’ll be Ault’s understudy, so to speak.

  43. Stretch February 8, 2012 9:41 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

Congratulations and Good Luck (364 days a year) to Rolo!

  44. manoa February 8, 2012 9:41 am

Interesting that this will combine one of the top rushing offenses in the country– number 1 in 2009 I think, with the coordinator from one of the top passing offenses in the country.

  45. Stephen Tsai February 8, 2012 9:47 am

    Stretch:

It’s a leap year. You can wish him one more day of luck.

  46. Garret February 8, 2012 9:48 am

Congratulations to Rolo! This is an important step for his career, as he’ll have been the OC for 2 D-IA schools in the west. Rolo can use his recruiting base in the Bay Area as that is a prime recruiting area for Nevada.

Getting a 2-year contract shows Nevada’s faith in Rolo, and that faith will be rewarded. I expect him to do a good job in Nevada, which could provide head coaching or high-profile OC jobs in the future. The head coaches at Nevada and Hawaii aren’t exactly that young, for example.

This will just add more interest in UH’s games with Nevada…and Nevada will play at Aloha Stadium this season!

  47. al February 8, 2012 9:49 am

rolo’s resume will look really nice in a couple of years having been a master of both the run and shoot and the polar cousin, the pistol.

he’s also a hard worker when it comes to recruiting and you know we’ll see him in hawaii often enough to be concerned.

  48. Garret February 8, 2012 9:49 am

New Mexico’s newly hired DC just took a job at Arizona State. Here is another example of a coordinator taking a job at a higher-profile school despite just being hired a month ago…Rolo’s situation is NOT unusual.

Former Illinois assistant Ron West, who was named New Mexico’s defensive coordinator just last month by new Lobos coach Bob Davie, is headed to Tempe, according to the Albuquerque Journal.

“Over the weekend, Ron received an offer from Arizona State and accepted it,” Davie said in a statement to the newspaper. “I’m disappointed but I certainly understand the business aspect of this profession. Coach West made a decision he felt was best for his family, and we wish him the best of luck in the future.”

  49. BowsForever February 8, 2012 9:50 am

Congrats to Rolo. Wishing you the best 11 games out of the year. 😉

  50. Stephen Tsai February 8, 2012 9:51 am

I think the key to marketing is reinvention.

It was great the arena has the dance-off, paddle-off, car races, etc.

But now it’s time to come up with a new rotation of games.

    Every event should be unique.

  51. Garret February 8, 2012 9:52 am

Latest update on the MWC/CUSA merger. Looking at CUSA’s conference membership, I frankly don’t see a lot of positives for UH in being in a conference with low-profile schools located so far away from Hawaii (that UH will have to subsidize the travel for). I would prefer the MWC to add a few schools like UTEP from CUSA or certain WAC schools to keep the travel down, but that ship has already sailed…

Conference USA’s board of directors will meet later this week to discuss the possibility of a full-scale merger with the Mountain West Conference, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

In the past year, C-USA members Houston, SMU and Central Florida accepted invitations to join the Big East in 2013-14.

That, along with Memphis’ pending departure, would leave C-USA with eight members: Southern Miss, Tulsa, Marshall, Rice, UAB, Tulane, East Carolina and UTEP.

    http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/7554045/conference-usa-board-discuss-possibility-merging-mountain-west-source-says

  52. Stephen Tsai February 8, 2012 9:53 am

The coaching changes are why I think they should push the letter-of-intent period back to April.

It gives teams more time to set up staffs, as well as to evaluate players.

Plus, it allows a recruit to have a better gauge of his eligibility.

  53. Stephen Tsai February 8, 2012 9:55 am

Trouble with a full merger is it has no legs.

Eventually, schools stick to their own, and start breaking away.

Based on geography, WAC and MWC should merge. It’s going to happen one day, anyway.

  54. Garret February 8, 2012 9:56 am

It looks like the Big 12 is targeting *ACC* schools for expansion…I can see how those schools would be preferable to the Big 12 over Big East schools. The article says that Louisville (I’ve always assumed they were the next Big 12 target since the birdies have really brought them up a lot) and BYU are the backups if Clemson and Florida State decline.

The Big 12 conference will put its expansion plans on hiatus while Clemson and FSU decide to apply for membership or stay with the ACC.

Talks between the two schools and the Big 12 began late last fall and continued after the completion of the 2011 season. Recently both schools have formed committees to examine the advantages and disadvantages of leaving the ACC for the Big 12 and expect to reach a decision by late summer.

The Big 12 provided Clemson and FSU financial projections with estimates of each member’s share of annual revenues in excess of $35 million per team – more than double ACC projections — after the tier 1 TV contract is reworked.

  55. AllG February 8, 2012 9:56 am

ST, can you confirm that Ne’Quan Phillips has sent in his LOI?

Congrats to Rolo!! He and Tuioti were the two coaches that I really wanted us to keep. He has a great offensive mind and I think was held back a little by the past staff. Nevada’s offense is now going to be that much more dangerous. I thought Rolo and Chow could have worked together and Rolo could have learned from Chow and grew to be his successor. After Rolo tears it up at Neveda hopefully we can still afford him when Chow decides to retire.

  56. Shadow February 8, 2012 9:57 am

Nevada will be one of our top rivalry games now & will be very exciting. I’m sure Rolo will be looking forward to meeting the new regime Warriors & have that extra incentive to show what he can do & “payback” for not being retained.

Nevetheless, congrats and good luck to Rolo! This is a good opportunity to further his career.

  57. Stephen Tsai February 8, 2012 9:58 am

Rolo will benefit from a head coach who is willing to, ahem, pull the trigger.

Rolo drew up some creative plays he did not use last year.

I think Ault will encourage creativity.

  58. koakane February 8, 2012 9:58 am

Rainbows picked to finish third in final WAC baseball season

should be an interesting bball season this year. schedule make this very interesting

  59. Stephen Tsai February 8, 2012 9:58 am

    AIIG

Ne’Quan Phillips has sent his letter.

  60. mikey February 8, 2012 9:59 am

It will be an interesting November when Nevada rolls into town with rolo.

I don’t think Mouse would appove they (Mouse and Ault) were like cats and dog or should I say Mouse.)

If rolo eventually becomes a HC he can call it R&S Pistol Offense.

  61. Old School Dave February 8, 2012 9:59 am

Congrats to Rolovich. I just hope Rolovich enjoys working for Chris Ault and getting pushed around (literally) by his new boss.

  62. graham February 8, 2012 10:03 am

I take back my comments about this before, it was the right move for Rolo. I didnt know all the facts. Any word on Shaw or Smith- Hope they land somewhere

  63. Stephen Tsai February 8, 2012 10:03 am

    Old School Dave:

Well, they won’t literally see eye-to-eye.

  64. koakane February 8, 2012 10:03 am

st #50 agree with you and nominate Mrs a-house to spear head. her junk and po game at the christmas party a few years back was a hit. old game revised but was big hit. she may have other up her sleeve but imho think Mr a-house might be the road block lol

  65. Shadow February 8, 2012 10:04 am

Old School Dave: I know what you mean. Not many assistants stay (or last) w/ Ault very long.

  66. AllG February 8, 2012 10:05 am

Knowing Rolo he will bring his “A” game against us. He is gonna want to prove Chow wrong be not retaining him. I sure he will have some tricks up his sleeve.

  67. cheepono February 8, 2012 10:06 am

the wr coach at miramar hs, where marrell jackson attended, said marrell only verballed to UH. visiting kentucky next.

  68. Old School Dave February 8, 2012 10:06 am

What’s Rich Miano doing besides running his Speed and Quickness clinics? I was hoping that he would possibly land an assistant job somewhere (NFL maybe – Quality control coach for example). Staying away from the game (or out of work for that matter) for an extended period of time cannot be good for the coaching resume. But then again, it’s not like he needs the money.

  69. Old School Dave February 8, 2012 10:08 am

ST: That’s a good one :-). I’d like to see Mouse Davis vs Chris Ault Part-2.

  70. Old School Dave February 8, 2012 10:09 am

Didn’t an offensive lineman at Nevada get kicked off the team for attacking his position coach a few years ago?

  71. AllG February 8, 2012 10:09 am

    68.

If he is not looking for a coaching position, they should still let him run the walk-on-program and UH and maybe give him Lumpkins old job.

  72. jkjones February 8, 2012 10:11 am

Yep, Rolo will be working with the General. Good Luck.

I have always believed, that Rolo’s path to being a head coach must follow the mainland route. Hawaii gave him a start and now he must grow.

Many are not as concerned with playing Nevada and Rolo as the other teams on our schedule.

We host the wolfpack at home and UH has a different HC and system.

AFA, CSU, FSU, SDS, BYU and USC are on the road. Now, that is reason for concern.

  73. koakane February 8, 2012 10:14 am

    peeps let get real.

lets remember and celebrate all the good our past warriors did for the 808. wish them well in their future endevours.

when appropriate just voice louder for the Green and White if encountering old ohana’s. cant ask for any more or expect any less.

  74. LizKauai February 8, 2012 10:18 am

    Best Wishes to Coach Rolo!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY MRS. MIDNIGHT!!!

  75. masatoshi-san February 8, 2012 10:23 am

I still think we should try to schedule Florida State. It is true that we would have to play them in Tallahassee and they are a tough team to play, especially at home. However, if we can either play them tough or win that game, it would be some positive national recognition, we could use the opportunity to better recruit the state of Florida, and you can tell recruits that we do schedule the best teams in the nation.

  76. 808Bowler February 8, 2012 10:26 am

Congrats coach rolo. One day you’ll be back here coaching.

  77. al February 8, 2012 10:26 am

koakane…brilliant. your subliminal message of having a halftime “jan, ken, po” playoff at midcourt with randomly chosen participants would be awesome.

  78. koakane February 8, 2012 10:28 am

ooops adding on to lizk wishes for mrs midnight. may you be treated as a princess always.

  79. koakane February 8, 2012 10:30 am

#77 much mahalo Al sometimes I get good thoughts when the one cell is clicking.

  80. jkjones February 8, 2012 10:36 am

the 13th game is a moot discussion.

Our goal in Chow’s inaugural year is to be competitive in conference and become bowl eligible. That means at least 6-6. Given our schedule and brutal road games–we will be hard pressed at home to sweep. The donks will be making an appearance. The last time BSU came to town was 3 years ago, 2009, and they blasted Hawaii, 54-9.

Our 2012, 12-game schedule is a blessing. Split evenly @ 6-6 and we make the post season.

Tall order, but something within reasonable reach.

  81. masatoshi-san February 8, 2012 10:37 am

It’s gonna be… “interesting” seeing coach Rolo at Hawaiian Airline’s field on the opponents sideline, decked out in Wolf Pack gear.

  82. Kevin February 8, 2012 10:39 am

    UH promotional give aways:

People should REMEMBER that if you win a monetary prize you have to ahem… PAY TAXES ON THEM. 🙄

    Jeez….

  83. SteveM February 8, 2012 10:39 am

    Good morning everyone!

Congrats to Rolo! This should be interesting…

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARB !!!

    (Mrs. Midnight)

  84. masatoshi-san February 8, 2012 10:40 am

Well I remember reading somewhere that there is talk on upping the requirements for bowl eligibility from being at least 6-6, to needing a winning record (7-5 or better).

  85. Bulla February 8, 2012 10:44 am

    it’s business….

CONGRATS TO ROLO, GOOD JOB, AND MAHALO FOR EVERYTHING

  86. Kevin February 8, 2012 10:47 am

    Honestly,

They SHOULD up the bowl eligibility requirements across the board.

Kind of insane to let an even .500 team in, even if that team was us.

Hard to boast about being “bowl bound” at an even .500.

  87. koakane February 8, 2012 10:47 am

bulla true dat but still a warrior IMHO

  88. madeinhawaii February 8, 2012 10:50 am

Chris Ault will make 66 this year. If Rolo outlasts him he might get his shot at HC there.

  89. koakane February 8, 2012 10:58 am

I would like to see teams with at least 8 wins be considered for post season bowl games, or cut back on the number of bowls forcing them to take teams with a decent record.

interesting to see if the NCAA could some how regulate this but I wish I had a millions of dollars also.

  90. Kevin February 8, 2012 11:02 am

    Koakane,

If they make it 8 wins, would that alone reduce the number of bowl games out there?

  91. masatoshi-san February 8, 2012 11:03 am

#88 (madeinhawaii) that would be too bad if Rolo ended up as a future Wolf Pack head coach, because we would have to play him every year, and I would love to see him in decked out in green and white as the head coach for UH one day… That being said, seeing him at UNR won’t be as bad as if we had to see him coach at Fresno. That would suck.

  92. Kevin February 8, 2012 11:03 am

Less is more, ESPECIALLY with bowl games.

  93. madeinhawaii February 8, 2012 11:06 am

    masatoshi-san:

Then again, it might be better for him to get his practice elsewhere before packing his playbook and heading back home to the islands, eh?

  94. Bigislandkurt February 8, 2012 11:06 am

First off, Congratulations to Rolo! Great career move for him and his family.

But why is when a coach like Rolo flip flops after “giving his word,” we congratulate him and attribute it to the business of college football……and when a player “gives his word” that he will play for UH, only to flip to Wazzu that we call him a traitor? Remember how some of you posters were acting on signing day?

    Rolo….Taliulu…same same eh?

    BIK

  95. koakane February 8, 2012 11:08 am

    kevin,

only thing that could upset this idea is the bowl committee’s choosing teams with high following or being from prestigious conferences.

    money again is the issue.

  96. madeinhawaii February 8, 2012 11:10 am

    Bigislandkurt:

What if Rolo told the UMass coach beforehand that he would accept the job only if the Nevada one doesn’t work out?

MIH….If I was the Umass coach and Rolo said that to me, I would have certainly not offered him the position.

  99. koakane February 8, 2012 11:18 am

    bik that a good analogy

imho peeps see this as a fulfillment of their commitment to 808 then move on while the other situation is linked to being a broken promise. I may be wrong but some how its a cultural related island thing.

  101. Kevin February 8, 2012 11:19 am

  103. Gonzo February 8, 2012 11:20 am

    Re#94:

While on the surface there may be similarities dig a little deeper and you’ll realize that comparison is dumb.

For one, Taiaulu didn’t let the UH coaching staff know of his intention to re-commit to Wazzou. This was after the write-up in the Star Advertiser where he went on record and said some pretty bold things about starting a new tradition, building something up, etc. At least Rolo had the decency to check in with his UMASS boss prior to taking the Nevada job.

Rich Miano said publicly that he has no intentions of leaving Hawaii so it was UH or nothing. I hope Rolo doesn’t come back and stick it to us next season.

  108. koakane February 8, 2012 11:27 am

#103 Gonzo just letting you know I am not picking on anyone just reacting to the concept being sited in post #94

#106 Very happy for Rolo! This looks like a very good situation for his career and for his family.

right on and agree we should always keep this foremost and not dish others. OHANA always should come first.

  111. Kevin February 8, 2012 11:33 am

    To add to “Gonzo”‘s reply:

    Rolo/Taliulu,

I think the reactions are more simple to explain.

Rolo did his time as a UH Football Warrior and as a member of the coaching staff. Plus, Rolo was not hired by Coach Chow. A feeling of sympathy for a lack of a better term here. Rolo didn’t have a choice to stay on the UH Football Warriors coaching staff.

Taliulu, as with any prospect has a choice when offered. His departure to WSU was a choice of his, thus spurning those that spoke their mind accordingly.

  112. Kevin February 8, 2012 11:35 am

AND… for most of us, myself included.. I have NO emotional or financial investment with Umass…

    Not our problem.

If that’s TOO HONEST, oh well.

  113. jkjones February 8, 2012 11:39 am

didnt rolo recruit punahou’s matthew sparks to mass.

  114. Old School Dave February 8, 2012 11:43 am

Heard Coach say that spring practice would be open, but fall practices would be closed. Coach said: “This is serious business.” I would think that there will be more closed practices at Aloha Stadium. Could use an indoor practice facility at times like this.

  117. AlaWai February 8, 2012 11:55 am

Rolo has knowledge of several different offenses. He was the one coach who I felt would be retained to provide alternate looks to Dr. Chow’s O. It will be interesting to see Rolo coach against UH with his knowledge of strengths and weaknesses. The chess match continues!

  118. ai-eee-soos February 8, 2012 11:57 am

    Quenton Brown: Welcome Aboard.

    per ST’s SA column.

  120. Niko February 8, 2012 12:06 pm

So where does that leave that Punahou o-line guy (Sparks?) who signed with UMass cause Rolovich recruited him? Maybe he’ll change his mind and stay home now.

  121. jkjones February 8, 2012 12:12 pm

Q Brown can be an immediate impact player. his video displayed speed, quickness and athleticism. he plays big–sideline to sideline and down the field. in high school he saw action as a TE as well. he is a multi-talented, skilled athlete with 3/3! Good to know Quenton will have family support near by.

  122. jkjones February 8, 2012 12:15 pm

@ 120. exactly my point. while rolo didnt sign a contract w UMass, he recruited an athlete from Hawaii to UMass based on being the OC. Roll-back the question a bit.

  123. d1shima February 8, 2012 12:25 pm

    Congratulations to Nick Rolovich!

Hope he does well then stays close to the walls (so as not to expose his back).

  124. Aaron February 8, 2012 12:28 pm

BIK – college assistant coach is one of the worst jobs ever, in terms of job security. I think it’s wrong to hold it against Rolo for trying to make the best decision for himself in that situation.

  125. Stephen Tsai February 8, 2012 12:32 pm

Sparks still is going to UMass.

Besides, UH stopped recruiting him in December.

  126. Old Diver February 8, 2012 12:36 pm

The biggest difference Rolo will find coaching at Nevada as opposed to Hawaii will be in recruiting. It’s gonna be a whole lot easier to recruit for Nevada.

  127. WarriorMojo February 8, 2012 12:36 pm

Except Sparks apparently didn’t have offers from any other school, including UH. So Rolo got him a scholie that he didn’t and apparently wouldn’t have had BUT FOR Rolo.

Some of you guys need to stop trying so hard on this stuff, especially those with the new names.

  128. Darren February 8, 2012 12:38 pm

For all we know, perhaps Rolo actually helped Sparks to get an offer from UMass. Good kid, good family…he gets to continue playing football and have his education paid for. The timing of UH stopping his recruitment is not coincidental…

  129. WarriorMojo February 8, 2012 12:39 pm

And, BIK, my #127 wasn’t directed at you.

  132. al February 8, 2012 12:42 pm

niko…the letter of intent that has been signed and executed is binding by both parties. only, if the head coach is no longer there can this be rescinded.

  133. papajoe2 February 8, 2012 12:43 pm

Eh guys. Rolo and Reno may very well beat the Warriors (but I don’t think so) because it is Coach Chow’s first year as a head coach and first time with ALL the players, whereas, Reno’s team only has new assistant coaches but basically the same players and system. I hope us fans don’t think that we will go undeafeated this year like some of you predicted last year. We have to be real about it. I do expect very good things from Coach Chow and the Warriors, but lets not expect too much this year as each year will get better when the players and coaches adjust to each other and coaching in Hawaii (distance is a factor). We welcome Caoch Rolo and Reno to Hawaii. Bring your “A” game cause you will need it.

  134. al February 8, 2012 12:43 pm

  136. innocent observer February 8, 2012 12:45 pm

believe that UH’s kamikaze jets will shoot down the nevada’s pistol. while the r&s was a prolific offense in terms of yards gained, it was never a championship type offense.

  137. RZ February 8, 2012 12:47 pm

Maybe with Rolo on the team Grumpy will win a bowl game in Hawaii.

  138. tom mui February 8, 2012 12:49 pm

@125 ST: New coach takes over in January and starts naming his staff.

Old staff is contracted to March but understandably are out looking for new employment.

Question: if UH (old staff) stop recruiting Sparks in December, was the new staff aware of Sparks being recruited by UH?

I can understand that Sparks might not have fitted in the prototype of linemen that Coach Chow wants.

I’m just wondering if Mr. Sparks got fallen by the wayside. (Nothing wrong with UMass which is a good school)

Wonder whatever happen to him? 🙂

Rick Pittino ? He was a GA at Manoa.

Doesn’t Chris Ault call his own plays? If so, then Rolo’s title is just title. Regardless, congrats to Rolo!

  152. mikey February 8, 2012 1:23 pm

Rick Pittino was interim HC with a record of 2 win 4 losses for UH following Bruce O’Neil scandel in 1976.

He reminds me a lot of Rolo with very high potentials as a HC to be some day.

  153. Gsky February 8, 2012 1:23 pm

Wow, this recruiting class sure looks like it has a lot of potential. Can’t wait to see how that unfolds in the next few years.

Question: Anyone know what Manti Teo was rated at his position during his recruiting year?

    Thanks!

  154. WAR February 8, 2012 1:23 pm

@134 basically…..the same respond from (press conference),(Executive downtown),(Call the Coach Show),

Coach Tony T. Has the task of giving all info on each player to the new Coaches.

Since Rick Pittino left UH he became a HC at:

    Providence

    New York Knicks

    Kentucky

    Boston Celtics

    Louisville and

    Puerto Rico Men’s National Team

Not bad for former UH assistant and interim HC.

  165. Bigislandkurt February 8, 2012 2:16 pm

    @Aaron #124…

Brother, I am not holding anything against Rolo. If you read my post, it is more about the double standard some fans will have when it comes to a player who goes “against his word,” as opposed to a coach.

    BIK

  166. ai-eee-soos February 8, 2012 2:17 pm

    re# 158.

“* Financial push made: While Rolovich’s salary isn’t finalized, Ault said athletic director Cary Groth has been “terrific” during this process as Ault’s rejiggers his staff. Brining Rolovich into the fold likely means the Wolf Pack’s cost for coaching salaries had to increase at least a little.*”

as I stated in an earlier post, I hope ROLO gets a decent salary. UNR are cheapskates

when it comes to coaches salary. Rolo made 130 K at Manoa.

  167. Shoko February 8, 2012 2:17 pm

Based on the the Wolf Pack blog, alot of Pack fans are optimistic of Rolo’s hiring. Thats always a good start. 😉

  169. Curt February 8, 2012 2:18 pm

I wonder if Rolo is going to bring on other former UH assistants to the offensive staff? Brian Smith would be a good choice. I would also think that Inoke Funaki would be high on Rolo’s list. But, would he leave graduate school now before he completes his degree? Hmmm.

  170. Curt February 8, 2012 2:21 pm

Would Craig Stutzman or Ashley Lelie also be considered at UNR?

For a coach with a family, “unemployment” is the enemy. I like that we will be playing against some of our former coaches.

As for Sparks… nothing wrong with a good East Coast College education. Graduate of UMass sounds somewhat better than Graduate of SJSU or NaMaSU. No offense meant, of course.. just a personal opinion.

  184. al February 8, 2012 2:42 pm

176…they believed that they would survive the crash and swim back.

in the feudal warring days of japan the helmet was an ornamental thing to display their clans colors, name, or other significant symbol relative to their family. perhaps that may have been the reason.

anyway, there were no witnesses to see if they did wear helmets…were there?

  185. Kevin February 8, 2012 2:44 pm

Pitino served as Hawaii’s interim head coach late in the 1975-76 season. Coach Bruce O’Neil was fired after the Rainbow Warriors’ started the season 9-12. Pitino led Hawaii for their final six games, going 2-4 in the span.[8]

Pitino’s time at Hawaii was marred by a 1977 NCAA report on sanctions against the program. According to the report, Pitino was implicated in 8 of the 64 infractions that led the University to be placed on probation. The violations involving Pitino included providing round-trip air fare for a player between New York and Honolulu, arranging for student-athletes to receive used cars for season tickets, and handing out coupons to players for free food at McDonald’s. He was also cited, along with the head coach, Bruce O’Neil, for providing misinformation to the NCAA and University of Hawaii officials. Also in 1977, the NCAA infractions committee recommended that Pitino and O’Neil be disassociated from Hawaii athletics. In 1989, Pitino would dismiss the report, saying “I didn’t make any mistakes, I don’t care what anybody says.”

@176 Kevin: Did they actually wear metal helmets? In all those war flicks, all I saw were those leather (?) headgear (which even our pilots wore – think it had the earphones built-in) plus the white rising sun cloths wrapped around the headgear.

Interesting if they did have metal helmets.

  190. BigHiloFan2 February 8, 2012 2:51 pm

wat i meant wuz, make yourself proud!

  191. Kevin February 8, 2012 2:52 pm

    BHF2,

First floor was mostly still closed about a quarter to 7 this morning, had to drop off something to Coach Coolen who is usually there that early anyway. But walking thru, you can see associate AD Carl Clapp was already in and working away, then a few custodians, the football wing was lit, but didn’t see who was in their offices.

BTW, is the 3rd floor like haunted or something???????

I was sitting in the reception area with the TV finishing something and kept feeling eyes staring at me from the right coming from the long hallway on the arena side of the complex.

Half the lights were on so I dunno if it was just me or maybe the two Monster energy drinks I just pounded on the way there.

  192. Buffoman February 8, 2012 2:52 pm

I believe Kevin is correct and if you will notice in items by Coach Pittino, he does not mention or would not speak fondly of his time here.

Frank Arnold may not been a good fit at the time but Riley was a good fit for his time here. One could say the same when Nash took over and now we have Gib. I like Gib and feel that he is a very good fit. I’m certain there are better recruiters and coaches out there but I hope Gib stays for a long time. He has the stuff to build a strong program.

  193. Kevin February 8, 2012 2:53 pm

A man went to the Super Bowl, and when he arrived, he realized that his seat was in the last row. After the game started, he noticed an empty seat right on the fifty-yard line. So he made his way to the empty seat and said to the man sitting next to it, “Excuse me, is anyone sitting here?”

The man replied, “No, actually the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to come with my wife, but she died. This is the first Super Bowl we haven’t been at together since we got married in 1967.”

“Well, that’s terribly sad. But couldn’t you find anyone else to take the seat? A close relative or friend?”

‘No,” the man replied. “They’re all at the funeral.”

  204. Garret February 8, 2012 3:30 pm

It looks like the $24 mil exit fee for West Virginia that I heard about awhile back might actually be close to being correct–West Virginia going to the Big 12 for the 2012 season will mean that the Big East wants one of the MWC or CUSA schools for the upcoming season.

If Boise State pays the $7 mil exit fee to the MWC, that means that 6 MWC schools will split the money since UH/Nevada/Fresno won’t have joined yet. That means that SDSU will get $1.2 mil of Boise’s exit fee even though they are leaving the next year…and UH gets none of it.

West Virginia is getting the Big East upset for leaving way before the 27-month deadline, and the MWC and CUSA probably won’t be happy that West Virginia is trying to get one of their schools to leave for the Big East in 2012…

West Virginia and the Big East Conference are nearing agreement on a settlement worth at least $20 million that would resolve all issues between both parties, college football industry sources told CBSSports.com.

The Mountaineers will join the Big 12 for the 2012-13 school year. However, in a bizarre twist, sources told CBSSports.com that West Virginia officials have contacted future Big East members to see if one could join in 2012 instead of 2013.

  208. Garret February 8, 2012 3:37 pm

Is West Virginia going to pay the Big East a $5 mil exit notification, $20 mil early exit fee, and pay the $7 mil exit fee for a school to leave the MWC early? They sure want to go to the Big 12…

  209. Ipu Man February 8, 2012 3:41 pm

Garret, please excuse my ignorance…but when you say

“the big 12″, do you mean the formally ”big 10″ of Wisconsin,

    Michigan et al?

  210. Shadow February 8, 2012 3:42 pm

Many of the questions posed to Coach Chow yesterday didn’t appear to me to be very interesting, thought provoking, or were questions that a lot of people already knew the answer to.

Bloggers here seem to have better questions that most people would be curious about. Maybe ST can take questions from here and present to Coach Chow to answer live the next go around?

  211. Garret February 8, 2012 3:46 pm

Some curious things are going on:

    1. The MWC still hasn’t released their football schedule yet. Other conferences have. The Big 12 has apparently released a schedule with both TCU and West Virginia included.

    2. West Virginia would face HUGE damages if they leave the Big East this season, with less than 6 months notice instead of the 27 months required and the Big East had just 7 football teams for the 2012 season.

    3. West Virginia is probably going to try to convince a MWC team instead of a CUSA team for a simple reason–if a CUSA team leaves, CUSA loses its title game so West Virginia would have even more damages to pay. If a MWC team leaves, the MWC will still have 9 football teams and no damages would occur to their schedule. Plus, the MWC’s bylaws specifically *allow* a school to leave even with this little notice.

    4. West Virginia thus needs to get Boise State or SDSU to play in the Big East in 2012. This means that West Virginia also needs to get the WAC to let Boise State in early or the Big West to let SDSU in early.

  212. Garret February 8, 2012 3:48 pm

    Ipu Man,

Conference names mean nothing anymore–the WAC is in Texas, the Big East is in California, the Big 12 has 9 or 10 schools, etc. When I say the Big 12, I mean the conference with Texas and Oklahoma.

  213. Ipu Man February 8, 2012 3:50 pm

Oh, that big 12…the one Nebraska left to go to the big 10

which makes it the big 11?

Abbot and Costello could do a gig on this…

    🙄

  214. Garret February 8, 2012 3:51 pm

It looks like the settlement will go down tomorrow…for less than what other places have published. That $11 mil would be in addition to the $5 mil…and maybe West Virginia would also be paying the $7 mil exit fee for a MWC team.

West Virginia University is close to settling a lawsuit with the Big East by paying the conference $11 million, clearing the way for the school to join the Big 12 starting with the 2012 football season, a source with knowledge of the situation told the Post-Gazette.

The two sides are scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. status hearing Thursday on a conference call with Rhode Island Superior Court Judge Michael Silverstein.

The resolution is expected soon, potentially as early as Thursday.

  215. Garret February 8, 2012 3:52 pm

    Ipu Man,

The Big 10 already had 11 schools, so Nebraska was their 12th school.

Yup. Pitino was tainted by the scandal and apparently not seriously considered for the HC position. It’s too bad he won’t even recognize his Hawaii experience. It’s like it never happened. I think I still have a photo I took of him and Bruce O’Neil together.

  221. Kevin February 8, 2012 4:10 pm

When someone posed Japan as a recruiting pipeline, Coach Chow’s response was classic in that one can interpret it as:

    1) It was the last thing on his mind as far as recruiting goes.

    2) See above.

    Another interpretation is:

-Coach Chow believes there is MORE work to be done at home FIRST before anything else, let alone.. Japan.

I like this. No worry about doing backflips in a dark room with glass vases everywhere if you can’t even find the light switch at home!!!!!!!!!!

Garret, Boise won’t go (this year), but is there anything to stop UH from offering to move to the Big East for the 2012 season? Might be our only chance to get in.

    WarriorMojo,

That is a VERY interesting idea!

It would solve the Big East’s problem of not having enough football teams for the 2012 season and would solve UH’s budget problems

UH hasn’t joined yet, so there is no TV money to give up. UH’s exit fee would be much lower than Boise State or SDSU because UH hasn’t even joined the MWC yet.

UH could *KEEP PPV* (Big East is an ESPN conference that gives local TV rights to its schools)

UH wouldn’t have to pay travel subsidies

UH could use the extra millions from TV in the Big East under their current TV deal

UH would get an estimated $12 mil per year more starting

It would probably be UH’s only chance to get into an AQ conference. Once the spots fill up in the Big East, UH would appear to be out of options (the Pac-12 isn’t expanding without Texas). Even if AQ goes away, the AQ money is about $1 mil more per school and the TV money would be $12 mil more…TV money wins.

Hopefully Fresno State and Nevada don’t get the same idea…

    HawaiiMongoose,

That actually makes sense to me! The Big 12 would lose their $1.1 bil Fox contract if they had less than 10 schools in 2012, so paying that $9 mil would actually save them a lot of money.

  232. jkjones February 8, 2012 4:45 pm

Ne’Quan Phillips was a first-team slection for Dade County (Miami).

Just for perspective, Dade is the 8th largest county in the US.

    Honolulu is 43rd (2010 census).

Dade County has a population over 2.5 million, compared to Honolulu’s 950,000.

Norm now done with recruiting for Class of 2012??? Hmmm…..

  234. RedZone February 8, 2012 4:54 pm

Do we have any scholies left to offer?

  235. Kevin February 8, 2012 5:00 pm

Is Marrell Jackson’s schollie the one Coach Chow “held on to” after he said he wasn’t able to find a kicker that could significantly upgrade the current depth at that position?

  236. BigHiloFan2 February 8, 2012 5:01 pm

    jkjones

    kapakahi

    Coach Chow not finished yet.

Marrell Jackson’s paperwork not in yet, and we have gazillions of examples of poachaz

swooping in at da last minute, before the actual paperwork is in, where the players

change their minds for the 3rd time and commit somewhere else den when day said day was going commit. Hard verbal. Soft verbal. pfttt…. so long as it involves a kid who is getting attention, they gonna listen to da last word. UCLA poaching the So. Florida high school DB is the most recent big time example, changing after “committing” to USC, etc.

get plenty plenty good DBs in Broward County and Dade County. but Marrell is special

because Coach Kaumeyer picked him out as special. I gotta go with Coach.

Marrell, you are wanted here. come and make yourself proud, real proud. 😀

  237. jkjones February 8, 2012 5:09 pm

@237 ? where are you going with this….?

I had no comment on Jackson.

BTW, according to sources, Marrel Jackson faxed and signed LOI to Hawaii.

  238. al February 8, 2012 5:09 pm

235…i’ve mentioned this before. we have two more available for bouncebackers and late transfers.

we could also recruit more as this is typically now “greyshirt season.”

  239. Shadow February 8, 2012 5:11 pm

So many schools jumping from conference to conference is crazy. All this because they want to be in a conference with an automatic BCS bowl bid. The end result is that the rich get richer and the poorer suck wind & may ultimately have to consider eliminating or downgrading (to lower division) their football programs.

Seems to me that the BCS can stop this by eliminating automatic conference bowl bid. Maybe selecting the highest 8 ranking teams by region (ex, 2 West, 2 North, 2 South, 2 East) with no regard to conference affiliation. Or, selecting the 8 highest ranked teams regardless of conference (w/ limit no more than 2 from any one conference.) If this happens, the need to move from conference to conference is effectively gone.

Anyway, the BCS is suppose to meet this year &, supposedly, major changes will come about with regard to this dilemma. Hope they come up w/ something that is more equitable to all the Div 1A teams across the country (particularly, the one out in the Pacific Ocean).

  244. tom mui February 8, 2012 5:20 pm

Actually Bruce O’Neil had a brilliant staff. There was Rick Pitino, whose resume appears above. I forget the name of the other assistant but he came HC either at Syracuse or Xavier and the third became the head scout for the Detroit (pro) team.

In the aftermath of the O’Neil situation, then-UH President Matsuda wanted a completely clean slate and none of the O’Neil staff was considered for retention.

  245. BigHiloFan2 February 8, 2012 5:20 pm

boy o boy, we got a killa group of studs coming to play D. wit da returnees, we gonna get a killa crew.

  246. Garret February 8, 2012 5:21 pm

AQ status is *not* a big deal when you look at the big picture!

In 2010 you had Pac-12 schools getting $5 mil in TV money while UH got about $3 mil in TV money.

Under the Pac-12’s new TV deal, they will be looking at something like $24 mil in TV money while UH will get about $1 mil in TV money (assuming PPV is gone due to MWC rules).

The average Pac-12 school gets about $1 mil more than the average MWC school for BCS money…so, AQ status is a $1 mil difference but TV is a $23 mil difference. Why focus on AQ status?

The Big East will get FAR more in TV money than they get from the BCS system. Schools like Memphis know that AQ status is probably being eliminated for all conferences but that doesn’t stop them from paying $7 mil to leave CUSA since the TV money is far more than that in just 1 year.

  247. BigHiloFan2 February 8, 2012 5:22 pm

Kaumeyer used to killa DBs at da next level. he’s used to killa guys working with da killa DBs. we get young Coaches, 20/20.

    i am just loving this!

  248. Shadow February 8, 2012 5:22 pm

Clarification: right now BCS Bowls involve 10 teams, but I think you get the idea about eliminating automatic conference bids.

  249. Shadow February 8, 2012 5:29 pm

I think the big payoff comes from the TV money from the BCS Bowl Games plus the exposure/desirability of the conferences associated with those games (unless of course you have your own network deal like Texas, Notre Dame, etc.)

  250. kapakahi February 8, 2012 5:33 pm

Anyone know status of DE Ipulasi Eselu (2010 Warrior signee)?

  251. kapakahi February 8, 2012 5:38 pm

While feelin’ good for Rolo, kinda wonder about UMass signee OL Matthew Sparks.

Gotta believe that Rolo and the R-n-S offense were factors in Sparks getting offered and signing with UMass on NLI Day.

  252. jkjones February 8, 2012 5:39 pm

How do you contra distinquish betw AQ status and TV money? Dont put the cart before the horse. Teams in AQ conferences have lucrative TV monies. One is a direct function of the other.

  253. jkjones February 8, 2012 5:46 pm

@ 252. That is a question only Rolo and Sparks or those privy to the situation can answer. It does leave a lingering impression that matthew was hung out to dry after Rolo switched to Nevada.

Not sure how many high schools are in Miami-Dade school system, but the schools are huuuuuge. My cousin’s graduating class was about 1000 students. Shane Welch, of da vb Warriors, who’s from Coral Springs, which is about 45 miles north of Miami, said his graduating class was about that size.

So, for schools that big, how long is the graduation ceremony? 😯

good for him. good luck Matt.

Some curious things are going on:

    1. The MWC still hasn’t released their football schedule yet. Other conferences have. The Big 12 has apparently released a schedule with both TCU and West Virginia included.

Gee, just thought the MWC was like the WAC… no schedule till April… 😈

  258. WarriorMojo February 8, 2012 6:08 pm

Apparently some people need to brush up on what the BCS is and is not.

If the SEC — for whatever reason — decides that it will no longer participate in the BCS, will their ESPN television money go away? Hint: “Nope”.

Television money is separate from — and greater than — BCS money.

Hopefully Fresno State and Nevada don’t get the same idea…”

the reality is if we even sniffed at making a call to da Big East, all the way from way out West West West, the rest of the West and West West peeps, who already give us stink eye, would give us samoa stink eye.

we should be putting our brains to good use by figuring out how to reduce our payouts for traveling for everybody coming here.

Rockne can try fo do dat, right?

but meanwhile, we gotta back up our team, get season tix, pack da Stadium. I plan on doing my part, even from CC yellow if it comes to dat. The Russell Brand version of Arthur, wit da gold spyglasses, is my fav aspiration.

I’m thinking about making my own but I’m not sure where to start. Do you have any tips or suggestions? Cheers

  278. WarriorMojo February 8, 2012 7:16 pm

    Re #269

Sigh, the discussion was about MONEY, not the national championship. I’m guessing you cannot refute the money argument so you changed subjects?

And, even if we HAD been talking about the national championship — which we weren’t — the BCS champion is NOT the official national champion. There is no official national champion. There is a BCS champion and ONE of the polls is obligated to designate the BCS champion as the #1 team in that poll. BUT the other poll is NOT so obligated.

Again, if the SEC wasn’t part of the BCS, do you think anyone would really consider the BCS champion to be the national champion?

Sigh, responding to you is such a waste of time. I have to remember not to do it.

  279. WarriorMojo February 8, 2012 7:23 pm

Okay, back to the Big East topic. I sure hope Rockne, JD and the other powers that be have at least broached the subject with Big East officials.

We could do what Boise can’t because our other teams (most of ’em) are already placed in the Big West. We would have to tell Big East to schedule around our existing out of conference games, which should be doable. There would only be 7 Big East games in 2012, right Garret?

Most of all, I am terrified that UH could be left out of the MWC/Conference USA merger. Everyone who considers themselves a UH football fan should ALWAYS be concerned about our team being left behind by all of this conference re-org stuff.

    270 Ipu, Garret:

It would be very interesting IF Hawaii was ever accepted as a member of the Big East! They would have to change the name of the conference since Hawaii is not in the EAST. Some possibilities, Big America, Big Country, Atlantic-Pacific Coast Conference, East to West Conference. If they added one Asian and one European team, it could be the Big Earth Conference. They should not keep the current name even if Hawaii does not become a member. Boise, San Diego State, Houston, etc are Not in the East. But the new conference name possibilities could be endless. They should hold a contest. Should be fun.

  291. Dennis Halloran February 8, 2012 8:33 pm

  292. Haleakala February 8, 2012 8:43 pm

Jeremy Lin had 23 points and 10 assists in leading the Knicks to their third straight victory. It’s his third straight 20 point game. Not bad for an undrafted player who didn’t get a chance to show his stuff when he was with the Golden State Warriors and the other two teams he was with for a short period of time early this season. He was a star for Harvard who is not known for their basketball.

Lin reminds me of Colt Brennan. All Colt needed was a chance.

  293. Pun Dad February 8, 2012 8:44 pm

Just to clarify, Sparks was recruited by the old coaching staff and he was not actively recruited by the new staff. There is no doubt that Coach Rolo provided his name to Coach Molnar and Coach Hudson at UMass but it was the OL Coach there who recruited him not Coach Rolo. Another interesting fact is that Sparks is the SMALLEST OL recruit this year at UMass at 6′ 5″

Lastly, Coach Rolo called Sparks today to let him know before this was announced in the media. As noted, Sparks has signed with the school and not a coach so he will be staying at UMass…

  309. A.M. February 8, 2012 9:35 pm

Not to add fuel to the fire, but the reason why the SEC has been able to negotiate an enormous TV contract for their conference is because of AQ BCS status. As Sports Illustrated puts it:

“If TV deals were based solely on fan passion, the SEC would have secured its spot years ago. The biggest reason ESPN is rolling out the red carpet now is because of the league’s recent on-field success — three straight BCS titles and five in 11 years.”

So, if the SEC chose not to participate in the BCS, there are thers who would say:

    1) The SEC will never let that happen

    2) If that insanity set in, their ESPN contract will unquestionably diminish.

Think about it – TV money comes from the advertisers. If the SEC did not have AQ status or not play w/ the BCS, would the advertisers still put the bulk of their money in the southeast corner of the US, or move it to the BCS conferences where the rest of the country’s TV sets would be tuned to.

    Re #310

With all due respect, I don’t think your post adds ANY fuel to the fire. In fact your SI quote supports my point, not that of the other poser, I mean poster.

The reason the SEC has the big TV contract is due to its excellence on the field. Similarly, the reason the SEC is a BCS AQ conference is due to its excellence on the field. It is the excellence that matters.

If BCS AQ status were all that mattered, then logically every BCS AQ conference would have the same tv contract. Or, as you point out, the largest tv markets are in the East so the Big East and the ACC should have better tv football contracts than the SEC. But they don’t. Why? Cause the SEC teams would obliterate them on the field and everyone knows it. IF the MWC were ever to obtain BCS AQ status, do you think its tv contract would rise to SEC level? Of course not. It is the excellence that matters.

Garret posted a very interesting article the other day about how the Big Ten is now backing a championship playoff which would bypass the BCS bowl games. What would happen if the SEC backs that plan, but the other conferences remain with the BCS? In that scenario who loses luster, the SEC/Big Ten or the BCS system? The answer should be obvious.

Rooster — marketing vision is great from a retail point of view… now the Rainbowbotique and bookstores can sell black sportswear too. Increases color and item selection by 50% over just white and green. Hmmm, maybe get some silver in there too. In any event, extra sales goes to help the UHAD (somewhat).

We have begun practicing with a Senior group here in Arlington, about 20 people, mostly ukuleles, but we have about six guitars, and a dobro too. Once in a while a harmonica pops up. We visit various senior care centers, and do an hour of singing “oldies” – songs that are familiar to the people there. We do this on Wednesdays and Fridays, so Barbara and I spent part of her “birthday day” making others feel good too.

“Chris Demarest has good connections in Florida,” Chow said. “We’ll find these guys.”

    ….Stephen Tsai article, SA, 02/09/2012.

As I mentioned many times, Chris Demarest is a hell of a recruiter with networks along the eastern seaboard and in the eastern regions. Great coordinating effort by all coaches involved, not only in initiating contact, following through by the numbers but also in closing.

  342. jkjones February 9, 2012 5:23 am

@ 310. you touch the nerve of the controversy. “does the tail wag the dog or vice versa?”

No doubt, the SEC is in a commanding position and they will prolly have a lot to say when realignment settles and groundwork for a new play-off system is crafted. Many believe, the SEC will gain a huge advantage in lucrative independent TV contracts. We have seen the PAC 12 prosper, among others, under new leadership, using the same leverage. The only hope to keep this whole scene from tilting to a college football oligarchy would be congress–good luck.
