Rocky will attend Pro Day

Defensive lineman Rocky Savaiigaea is conceding that he will not be available to participate in UH’s spring practice, which begins March 31.

Savaiigaea is appealing the NCAA for a medical exemption that would enable him to play as a sixth-year senior in 2010. Although he has a strong case — he had early season-ending injuries in 2005 and 2008 — his appeal has not been advanced enough to receive a ruling for spring practice.

Savaiigaea said he will participate in UH’s Pro Day April 1 in Carson, Calif. The event is essentially a series of football-related drills attended by pro scouts. By not signing with an agent, Savaiigaea said, he is maintaining his amateur status. He also is taking on-line classes to remain in good academic standing with UH.

Former UH linebacker Marc Moody, who attended a junior college in 2009, is expected to receive a scholarship offer from Pacific.

* * * * *

Former UH kicker Brett Symonds, who was exploring the possibility of attending Utah State, has decided to remain in junior college for another season. Symonds transferred from UH last summer.

* * * * *

Slotback Niroby Dingle, who spent a year in Hawaii in the hope of joining the Warriors, has decided to accept an offer to play at Alabama State. Dingle and former UH slotback Davone Bess are good friends.

As part of the furlough plan, the UH athletic department will be closed during this week’s spring break. I’m wondering if that factored in the timetable for filling the basketball opening.

why does the ncaa move so slow when it comes to the university of hawaii?

    or

is it because we don’t provide thorough information?

…and when will brashton satele find out?

  7. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 22, 2010 9:25 am

If the athletic department is closed, do student athletes still have access to the weight rooms, locker rooms, etc? Likewise, can coaches still get into their office?

    Yesss !!! It’s football time.

Can anyone confirm that there is a “Call the Coach Show”

    Yeah – Frank Arnold.

My favorite was Mike Montgomery (sp).

My dark horse was Merv Lopes – wished that Merv would have had a crack at D1.

    Al:

Brashton appears as if he will get the green light.

However, he unkowingly made a violation by accepting a Labrador puppy from an agent. When the Athletic Department found out, the puppy was returned. It is unclear if this will factor, however.

Coach Mac has been back from Japan for more than 2 weeks or is a decision not made due to the large number of qualified applicants?

ST, what’s your take on this?

  35. anonymous March 22, 2010 10:10 am

Last week word from the UH is that the athletic department must be run like a business.

And I agree.Because the end result is that the fans idealistically will see a better product on the field or court.

I even see the athletic director Donovan relating to the public of why he let go of Coach Nash, saying to the effect that of the six criterias he used Coach Nash failed on one. As a result word surfaced that letting go of Coach Nash was based on a “business decision”.

If this is policy, then I hope the UH, and Donovan, are consistent in this approach in deciding the fates of other coaches within the athletic program , like even Coach Mack.

It would be bad if they’re selective, where one gets a pass and another doesn’t. One gets a long rope, one gets a short rope. Or one gets three years and another gets five years in proving that they can get the job done.

And I hope they aren’t showing latitude to one and not the other because that wouldn’t be a business model to follow.

For the coaches at UH it would be like they have to extract as much from their players so that they don’t fall short of the athletic director’s mandates. For otherwise they’ll become an extraction.

This system I like. It’s kind of like the business world where it’s the survival of the fittest. The end result, like I wrote earlier, is that idealistically the fans will see a better product on the field or court.

But looking at UH’s system, so far, there may be one caveat, and a important one at that, is that the athletic director shouldn’t be insulated from any scrutiny either. If the coaches are subjected to guidelines then Donovan should be, too. If Donovan is howling down the necks of his coaches then there should be someone howling down Donovan’s neck if this business mandate is going to have any success…and this process should also extend all the way to the top.

I really don’t get the Iolani and Punahou stuff. I hear guys who have graduated thirty and forty years ago still talking hate about each others school. Talk about lack of self esteem. Get over it boys and girls. Its not about where you graduated from, it’s about how you conduct yourself today, and if you are a good citizen helping move this State forward. If Arnold is successful it’s because he made the most of his life, and not because he went to Punahou. This childish feud between schools is really silly and is only propagated by fools.

  64. Old School Dave March 22, 2010 11:03 am

Marc Moody – wasn’t he a starter as a freshman at a D-IAA school (somewhere in the South) after graduating from St Louis? Then, he walked on at UH.

  65. homey March 22, 2010 11:04 am

  73. ai-eee-soos March 22, 2010 11:21 am

    Go Michelle – off-topic.

” … OAK BROOK, Ill. — Michelle Wie has signed an endorsement deal with McDonald’s, with an advertising campaign that will be launched next month in five languages.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed Monday.

Wie is one of the most popular players in women’s golf, especially after the 20-year-old from Hawaii won her first LPGA Tour event last year in Mexico. She spends part of her time as a student at Stanford.

The commercial is to be available in two dialects of Chinese, English, Korean and Taglish. Wie also will take part in McDonald’s promotions that focus on education…. “

cc – I can just picture you with a saimin bowl haircut, so yes I think you are the real cc.

    …with their wide angle lens…

  75. expat March 22, 2010 11:29 am

DPK, yeah, what is up with all that Pun hate?

al, you forgot Shutter, which is fine, but you also completely forgot about women’s sports (for shame!)-
    Basketball – Kuehu
    Soccer – Deptula
    Volleyball – Ka’aihue, Kam, Cubi-Otineru
    Golf – Matsuoka
    Sailing – Allman, Patmont

I didn’t know all of those off the top of my head (and probably not everyone is “scholarship”), but Kuehu, Ka’aihue and Cubi-Otineru are pretty prominent.

As far as men’s teams I will not argue that Punahou is probably unrepresented – however, there have been some. From my year both Scott Craven and Billy Blanchette (one of UH’s best pitchers ever) played baseball for UH. Rick Tune a few years later was a standout volleyball player. Afatia Thompson was not so long ago.

Plenty Puns attend UH, either undergrad or grad. Not all are blessed enough to be student athletes, but some are.

  76. Manoa March 22, 2010 11:29 am

Several Punahou scholarship players at UH.

Walt Guild and Tuinei during the Noga years. Dan Hale in basketball. Gib Arnold in basketball (until his father got fired). Owstrowski– football and basketball, Morgado, Tafiti Uso, Moe– forgot his first name, Cayman Shutter, ?? the running back who alternated JJ’s first or second year, plus several men’s volleyball players– can’t recall all the names.

  77. al March 22, 2010 11:30 am

only shutter, uperesa, and miah are on scholie.

you have to go back decades to recall names is what i am referring to. and this was not done with malice, just to show that to those that feel that a punahou thing is taking over the hawaii program is not a relevant fear.

when in high school, rivalries are a part of the everyday high school life. we all had em. mckinley-st louis, mckinley-kaimuki, iolani-punahou, iolani-kaimuki, punahou-roosevelt, farrington-kamehameha, kailua-castle, many rivalries did exist. it was fun.

as we mature, we have rub noses in the business community as well as socially with folks from all over. it is a great conversational piece.

  78. al March 22, 2010 11:31 am

tj moe went to st louis, the rest of his family attended punahou.

  83. al March 22, 2010 11:38 am

when pal eldredge was the baseball coach, many did go to uh. he had a good working relationship with les.

these days rarely do you find punahou baseball players even considering the manoa team. lately, many mid-pac guys end up at the les along with a fair share from iolani. i’d love to see more local boys playing baseball at home. the talent is there.

it goes back to why a kid/parent pick a school. education first? scholarships? coaches? status symbols? location? friends?

    too many variables.

i think trap is finally getting it…bring in more local boys the crowds will get better. although jd had something to do with it.

  90. al March 22, 2010 11:44 am

billy blanchette was one of the best overachievers to come out of punahou. he was a hardworker who just had the passion for the game. i thought he would end up coaching somewhere.

i had the opportunity to get to know him when he came out several times to work with our kids after his uh days.

Off-topic: Did anyone see the PBS Hawaii special on local/pidgin English? Interesting topic throughout. Included was a group of Punahou students being interviewed. When asked if they speak pidgin, mayber 3 out of a group of 9 said “no”. One girl said that she only speaks pidgin when she’s with public school kids. Two other students, looked liked athletes, said that they do speak pidgin. The remaining kids (many of Asian descent) said no.

I like to speak “da kine” as much as the next local person, but the guy who teaches English at KCC, Lee Tanouchi, gives me a headache when I listen to him. It’s like he’s trying too hard to speak it.

  96. Old School Dave March 22, 2010 12:22 pm

Henry “Kapono” Kaaihue, Punahou grad. Played D-line for UH in the early 70’s. Scott Haneberg, Cliff Montiho, O-linemen, early 70’s.

  97. Mike March 22, 2010 12:34 pm

Dave–Lee’s a good dude. Used to share an office w/ him. But interviewing him is a headache because he only speaks in pidgin (I think he did his master’s thesis all in pidgin) and transcribing is a bitch.

  98. Old School Dave March 22, 2010 12:40 pm

Mike- I admire what Lee is trying to do. Some of the stuff he’s written is funny. However, that’s just me. I also read that he did his English MA thesis in pidgin or Island Creole as its referred to. I can just imagine the looks on the faces of his students from the mainland on the first day of class at KCC.

Finally got to meet the “Keed” after the VB match on Saturday.

We, A-House family, were very impressed with her ability to drown out PP, Stretch, and A-Joe during the match – she has a VOICE!!! And, she no shame stand up and yell with a “make-shift” mega phone. Stretch would not let his go!

Lucky for Hawaii, she cheers for the the “local” team!!

didn’t UOP drop football in the 90’s?
when did they start up again.

  101. Derek March 22, 2010 12:49 pm

To Gib Arnold: What is an NBA style offense? Does that mean play to a 24 second clock? Does that mean a lot of pick and roll? Does that mean playing the triangle offense? Does that mean playing mostly man to man defense? Explain please?

Recommendation: take a good look at Micah Christiansen from Kam School who’s currently a Junior. He’s the best player in the islands by far. Get him early to commit. He can put on at least 20 to 25 lbs. and work on his strength and ball handling. He’s about 6’6″ now and could grow to 6’7 or 6’8 by the end of next year. Pretty good shooter and pretty athletic too. Also, take a look at DeForest Buckner from Punahou.
He’s pretty raw but has good athleticism. He’s also a pretty good defensive end and might be a DI prospect for football too.

A lot of people have been asking what are the expectations for UH basketball next season. This is my two cents. I think UH, at the minimum, should have a winning season. Why? If you are a good recruiter you can turn around a program in the first year. You need ball handlers, good shooters, and athletic types who can run. Conditioning is a priority. Players who are not in shape, should be shipped out, sorry to say. Good luck.

    Yes, a 17 year hiatus

  106. d1島 March 22, 2010 1:14 pm

Good article about the return of football at Pacific. It’s a trend among D3 colleges that is being seen as a way of increasing enrollment.

“We look at football not so much as a strategy to enhance our athletic department, but to enhance our ability to recruit students to our undergraduate programs,” says Phil Akers, Vice President for University Relations. “It’s an additional aspect of what Pacific University has to offer that will allow us to attract students we previously couldn’t.”

Because D3 schools don’t offer athletic scholarships, each enrollment is budget-positive.

University officials project bringing in 50 new students in the 2010-11 academic year as a result of football, adding nearly $1 million to the university’s bottom line through tuition dollars. By 2013-14, the expected 90 players in the program are projected to add over $2 million to the institution’s operating budget. The tuition money will not only add to the university’s general fund, but also cover the operating expenses of the football program.

Yes, the University is “officially” closed. However, there are a number of folks who are still reporting to work. When the whole proposal to close the University was made, each campus had to submit their list of which essential services must be open no matter what. I believe intercollegiate athletics, student housing/dining, student recreation are on the list of essential services. Weightrooms and facilities should be open, even if on altered or reduced hours.

    Re: Pidgin

Pidgin varies throughout the state. The pidgin spoken on Oahu is pretty distinct –whether it’s the version spoken in town or the suburbs or the versions you may have heard coming from those Waianae kids in the PBS special. The pidgin I continue to speak and defend comes from Ka’u. Very different dialect. Same pidgin foundation as all other places, but uniquely Ka’u. (A-Joe….can I get a witness?). Everybody likes to lay claim to their own pidgin roots….we have that right, and that is all good. So many times, however, these distinct differences get overlooked when we talk about pidgin. We look at it through a very generalized lens. Pidgin is THIS. Pidgin is THAT. When in all reality, pidgin can be all over the place. When I hear pidgin or see it written, I almost always find myself saying, I neva talk l’dat. But that was ok. Mines was mines, theirs was theirs.

Places from Kauai and Molokai sound the closest to our Ka’u tongue. Some people say plantation ass why. I think our recent plantation/ranching histories surely play a role, but what I found out later in life is the Kanaka factor. The pidgin from these areas closely resemble the sentence and phrase structures of the Hawaiian language. We all know that Ka’u, Kauai and Molokai (and Waianae and Hana and Kohala, etc. etc. etc) got some Kanaka representation. I don’t think this angle has been adequately covered in Pidgin science. Usually, it stops at the plantation — where all the ethnic groups had to find a way to communicate. The Kanaka angle represents a little bit different kine twist. Some folks’ version of “thick kine Pidgin” is usually linked to how granmma/grampa talked or how the old folks speak. Through other lenses/communities, there is no such thing as “thick kine pidgin.” It is after all, the tongue spoken every day.

Our Mayor Billy speaks Kalapana pidgin. Thick kine. But he can speak da haole tounge real good too. So no sell ‘om short when you hea him speak ‘coz da bugguh pretty shahp.

Mean no? I like talk about dis kine stuff.

Ok, back to football. Good luck Rocky.

The Derek Tatsuno’s and Joey Meyer’s were once in a lifetime Phenoms. I am not saying we should get rid of Trap or keep Trap. Ultimately the fans voice should be heard whichever way it flows. I think Big Mack Attack will have an awesome team this year. Nick Rolovich will and is becoming a great play caller. And Gib looks dapper. Like a politician. He looks stately. I am buying into his hiring. And when you meet up close with talented recruits, dapper appearance helps. Good looking beginning. JD, you are rolling the dice well.

UH at 10-9 playing AF at 5-15, can UH sweep, is Al in the house? Fortunately the attendance is up thanks to the Pac 10 teams, we finished 5-7 against them, now can UH keep the attendance momemtum going through the WAC season like they did last year. Coach Trap has some guidelines from JD, he finished 30-24 last season and he is 10-9 to date, but attendance is up. So if it comes down to a business decision and revenue is up, does he get a rollover even if he doesn’t win the WAC or go to the NCAA again.

Re #117 Big Island Kurt: The funniest story I heard about pidgin was from Robert Kekaula about Iolani grad Bern Brostek when he got drafted in the first round by the Rams out of UW. At his press conference they mainland reporters couldn’t understand a word he said. When asked what he was going to do with his bonus, Brostek said something like ” I going buy one (Ford or Chevy) pickup truck.” Too funny. His attitude was kinda “whatevahs, I no need for impress anyone.”

But I guess Brostek saved and invested for his future during his NFL days and is living the good life on the Big Island, from what I hear.

Very dominant game bu the BaseBows tonight! Good luck on their upcoming roadtrip! It was 1-0 Air Force as I was parking my car. By the time I got to the Les, it was 4-1 UH. When I sat down got to see 5 more runs scored in the bottom of the 2nd. That was pretty much it for all intents & purposes.

The word on the streets of Mililani is she may have been swept up by the twister that came thru. Saw her still photos of the event on the News of Hawaii tonite. You knew it was her right away. She was the only one complaining about the photographer not showing her best side.

    😀

  165. Slugger March 22, 2010 11:24 pm

If Dayton is the beat writer for basketBows games that may explain why he & Leila are hosting the interview of Bill Amis tomorrow instead of our fearless leader.

  166. Ralph March 22, 2010 11:24 pm

Umlauft should make the all freshman team. Too many good vb players at the OH position, 2OH and 1 RS, tough picks and lots of disappointed fans when the team is named. Main thing UH wins, qualify for the NCAA championship, especially the title.

  167. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 22, 2010 11:36 pm

    JM,

Agreed. Jonas Umlauft and Kelly Majam should easily walk away with Freshman of the Year 2010 honors in their respective sports.

Not to digress but I still won’t put anything past the powers that be because how Sean Carney didn’t even get on the All MPSF team in 2009 is beyond logic… 👿

  168. Ralph March 22, 2010 11:51 pm

UH bb travels to california to face Long Beach State (9-8), Cal State Fullerton (10-9) and u. of San Diego (11-10). Looks like a lot of teams are having difficulty in preseason. UH is 11-9. It’s a 5 game road trip with 3 of the games at Fullerton.

  169. jm2375 March 23, 2010 12:06 am

Note to UHAD – do *not* schedule tennis and softball at the same time. The tennis players may find 2 different types of yellow balls flying around the court. 😀

lol most of the remarks most people submit are a little out there, quite often i question whether they in actual fact read the items and threads before leaving a comment or if perhaps they just simply skim the titles and write the very first idea that pops into their brain. in any event, it’s enjoyable to look over sensible commentary every now and then rather than the same exact, old post vomit which i regularly see on the internet i’m going to take up a smattering of rounds of facebook poker adios

I just don’t understand why these guys get married. No one would care what they do if they didn’t. Think Wilt Chamberlain.

I always look for new teeth whitening product, and I’ve found crest white strips AWESOME!!!I was really surprised as I entered my neighborhood bar when my buddy called out, “dude, did you whiten your teeth?! they’re freaking glowing!” that pretty much sums up how effective the strips are – and I was only on day 3!To be objective, my teeth hurt a little when I first put them on, the type of slight pain you feel when you have cavities. I guess this is what they mean by your teeth becoming sensitive. But the pain isn’t bad, and it went away after a few minutes. And also, I didn’t notice a HUGE difference myself, but there definitely was a change for the better. And I guess to an outside observer, the change was noticeable. In short, I think this stuff is awesome. I’ll definitely finish it, and probably do it again at the recommended time.
