Rocky is back

Defensive tackle Rocky Savaiigaea today participated in team drills for the first time since undergoing surgery to repair a torn left triceps.
Savaiigaea played left tackle in the base scheme (4-3) and nose tackle in the Okie defense (3-3-5).
He said he felt fine, but likely will be restricted in the remaining six practices.
Also:
• Richard Torres has solified the job at nickelback.
• Offensive coordinator said there still are open spots at the receiver positions, including the first team. Kealoha Pilares, Greg Salas, Dustin Blount, Jon Medeiros and Ryan Henry are battling for slotback jobs. If Salas sticks inside, the competition at left wideout includes Rodney Bradley, Mike Tinoco, Joe Avery, Royce Pollard and Jovonte Taylor.

Nice to meet UKU@LA at practice this morning. Like all Tsaikos, we talked a lot about fuud in the middle of football.

    SteveM,

OK on the season ticket notice. Hope we can get seats closer to the 50.

    Duffer:
If you seek an extension but are expected a refund, you don’t have to worry.
But if you owe money, you have to pay the expected fee by today. If not, you’ll be penalized. If you’re expected-fee payment is too high, you’ll get a refund. But the guv wants your money first.

    good afternoon!

if the WR’s are close in talent, then let all those guys play? granted there’s a limit in sharing but at least a few reps each game.

i’d think NB is a hard position to play, slot receivers can go hard right or hard left with no sideline help? Torres is certainly good if he already locked it down?

  53. Garret April 15, 2009 1:33 pm

Bess is given as an example about why Miami should draft a CB instead of a WR in the first round.

Bess’s specialty was medium passes, where his 11.2 YPA on 21 passes put him in similar company to some much bigger names – Lee Evans (25 attempts, 283 yards, 11.3 YPA), Greg Jennings (34 attempts, 377 yards, 11.1 YPA) and Eddie Royal (22 attempts, 252 yards, 11.5 YPA). Bess has a tremendous understanding of pass offenses that he picked up while playing for June Jones in Hawaii, so his upside with experience could also be a lot higher.

Looks like Washington State might lose two more players for extended suspensions (possibly ending their careers there). The important thing about this is that Washington State is getting *really* short on CB depth…and they play UH early in the season before they have much time to fix that CB position. Two of the potential starters at Washington State are out due to academics and a returning starter at CB was one of the players suspended yesterday.

You will notice news about Romeo Pellum and Micheal Willis, who both were arrested early Saturday morning on different driving violations. Coach Paul Wulff reiterated that both are suspended indefinitely but would not say any more about their status. Though I can’t get anyone to say on the record their Washington State careers are over, it seems pretty obvious something will have to be done. Pellum had already buried himself with a still-undisclosed violation of team rules and if he’s found guilty on this driving with a suspended license charge, it may just be the last straw. Willis, who has struggled academically in his time at WSU, faces a DUI charge that, if it proves true, is something that can’t be overlooked.

With possible starters Devin Giles and Tyrone Justin missing spring drills for academic reasons – Giles not practicing at all and Justin skipping Tuesday workouts – and former starter Romeo Pellum suspended (see below), cornerback meetings could be held in a large closet.

Mississippi State found another way to raise money…I wonder if JD would be able to make some money by auctioning off the right to be honorary coaches at the Warrior Bowl? Mississippi State found out that it is okay with the NCAA to raise money this way.

The auction has ended, the cash has been counted — and Mississippi State has two new coaches for Saturday’s spring football game at Scott Field.

The pair’s involvement in their respective teams will include participation in the team drafts, giving a pregame speech and making the “tough gameday decisions,” as the release puts it, for each team.

“We’re looking forward to having these two fans and wonderful supporters get an up-close and personal look at what’s going on with our program,” coach Dan Mullen said. “This should be a fun weekend and we’re going to do what we can to make sure they have an enjoyable experience.”

    http://mauinews.com/page/content.detail/id/517293.html

In his acceptance remarks, he shared the ethic – encompassing collaboration, responsibility, love and respect – that has driven his wide-ranging community work.

“When we work together we can make a difference,” he said. “Once you pick up this kuleana (responsibility), no can let go.

“And don’t look for money, it doesn’t depend on money; it depends on people of heart. All I offer you is tough work. The payback is not measured in money; you can’t buy that. It’s not for a ‘me, my or I’ reason.

“Aloha is love,” he concluded, “and compassion and honesty, to give freely without expecting in return, to share.

“Aloha is life; when you aloha each other, you give life to each other.”

    Sort of like the Tsai-kos!

Isaiah Thomas wanted to coach so badly that he’s going to coach *for free*.

Here’s a sign of how badly Isiah Thomas wanted to return to coaching: He’s working for free at Florida International.

At his introductory news conference at FIU on Wednesday, Thomas said his salary the first year from the Golden Panthers will be donated back to the school’s athletic department.

Thomas was fired by the New York Knicks last year. The team still owes him around $12 million for the final two years of his deal there.

FIU athletic director Pete Garcia said that when Thomas learned about layoffs and budget cuts, he told the university president that the school should keep his salary.

  88. al ™ April 15, 2009 4:22 pm

one of two things must have occurred.

one, a recruit has had a change of heart and has gone elsewhere. i.e. kevin menner is reportedly now going to visit csun this weekend or maybe one of the pg’s.

two, those possible recruits (these are the recruits lower on the chart) who were asked to hold off in case something like “thing number one” happened have become impatient and accepted a scholie elsewhere.

therefore, the staff is in a tizzy and don’t know what to do now or who to recruit.

oh maybe, three, we have offered too many players and now need to be creative.

I hope that Coach Nash and his crew had some form of success in next year’s recruits. otherwise, it will make it more difficult to sell season tickets to their games next year which will directly affect the athletic dept fiscal budget.

  104. Curt April 15, 2009 5:11 pm

    Hi Whitey,

Wow. Thanks for the info. I’ve been hearing pretty good things regarding Shane. Can’t wait to see our offense rumble. Sounds like our o-line might be blocking better too–that’s got to help alot.

  105. Curt April 15, 2009 5:15 pm

Just heard it on the Animals that there’s a rumor that Nash will announce the recruits at tomorrow’s banquet. I would think that word on the recruits will get out way before then.

  107. warriorcocky3 April 15, 2009 5:24 pm

This is exactly what is wrong with the state of hawaii and the fans of UH.

Not wanting to hear the bad things is why they have the problems they have now. Just listen to me because I am great and I know what I am talking about and while everyone here is busy being a “cheerleader”, I am spilling the truth as I see it but just don’t bother to ask me where I get my information.

You people need to learn to stop being pro-active in attending seminars, e-mailing adminstrators directly, on-line chats with administrators, donating money to UHAD, and all that.

I have learned that the only way to inspire change and to make a real difference is to blog and blog and blog. The best part is you can do it all without a face or a name to it. If you are wrong no one can call you on it because you are faceless. I know what I am talking about because I am God incarnate.

People like me thrive on the anonymous world of internet blogging and message board participation that makes others know that while I may be nobody in real life and have accomplished nothing, I aspire to be… well… awesome.

Through the wonderful means of “hindsight” I will come out and say once again “I told you so”!

Hindsight is wonderful as anyone can be right!

I know SJ and Myki are always there.

I’m on vacation next week. Maybe we can do a breakfast CC somewhere like Big City again.

  109. Kazz April 15, 2009 5:32 pm

    Curt and Whitey,

Yeah you could see Shane Austin had something in him from last season. He threw some pretty balls last spring and from what people have said, for the most part, Shane Austin may creep up on Raush as the #2 guy behind GA.

However, GA has WAY more gametime experience than SA or BR combined and as we’ve seen, our offense NEEDS game-speed reps to really get a grasp of the concept.

No offense to the other QBs but barring injury or academic issues, I don’t see anyone leap-frogging Greg Alexander from the QB spot come the kick off of the Central Arkansas game.

One guy I am looking forward to seeing come fall is David Graves.

    http://voices.idahostatesman.com/2009/04/14/ccripe/finally_reason_get_excited_about_spring_game

    Re-Should OL wear knee braces?

The Broncos’ offensive linemen have stopped wearing knee braces because there’s no research that shows they help prevent injuries, Petersen said. Knee braces aren’t common in the NFL, he said. The Broncos’ linemen have been wearing knee braces since 2003, when they were purchased because coaches thought they would prevent injuries. Now Petersen says not wearing braces should increase mobility.

According to the above quote taken from the-By Chadd Cripe
ccripe@idahostatesman.com— Boise State’s offensive linemen have stopped wearing knee braces in hopes that by not wearing them would give the OL added mobility….

….and my reaction is huh?…aren’t the BSU OL pretty good…I mean last year’s stats show that the BSU OL didn’t give up that many sacks– and now a change? Why?

So looking at the 2008 stats-

Boise State offensive linemen gave up 13 sacks in 13 games last year.

    http://web1.ncaa.org/mfb/natlRank.jsp?year=2008&rpt=IA_teamsacksallowed&site=org

    4 Boise St. 13 13.0 102 1.00

Is risking injury to the OL knees worth it in exchange of the added mobility that the OL gains by not wearing the knee braces?

I don’t know how true the reasoning that the Boise coach gives in saying that knee braces don’t deter knee injuries, but I find this interesting. And I’ll keep close watch on this if what he is saying is true. And if the change (or experiment) materializes for the better, where their OL has more mobility and there’s no increase in knee injuries then I’d say the BSU coach is onto something. And is smart, evolutionary type of a thinker.

I don’t even know how true it is of his statement saying knee braces worn by OL in the pros isn’t common.

My point, then, is if the BSU coach is saying the knee braces doesn’t prevent injuries etc, etc and it gives the OL added mobility…then it’s easy to see that the Boise State coach is doing everything to gain an edge and win, which to me makes perfect sense. And if the myth of knee braces doesn’t prevent knee injuries and it is true that it is uncommon that the NFL OL doesn’t wear knee braces as often then maybe UH should look into having it’s OL not wear knee braces. After all isn’t some of the faults of UH’s OL is that they lack mobilty…and if the BSU coach sees that the wearing of knee braces by the OL is a hindrance to OL performance I think UH should keep a close eye on this.

  170. Garret April 15, 2009 8:56 pm

I thought that the whitey/Kazz bet was going to be something like if SA did not start a game by the 8th game then Kazz would win. That seems to be in line what whitey had posted earlier, which started the whole bet process. Picking just the starter for one game doesn’t take into account that the starter could be out with injury–like Austin could win the starting job and then get hurt in Game 6 or 7, so he wouldn’t start the game they are betting on.

Anyway, UH needs at least 2 game-ready QBs because starters rarely make through the season without injury. I seriously doubt that any QB could have made it through last season’s OL without getting injured (Rausch got hurt late in training camp, Inoke had a concussion or something, etc.). In past years I remember Colt missing games due to injury, Chang missing games, etc.

    Hi Momo!

  172. postmanke April 15, 2009 9:08 pm

It’s going to be a really rough season.. We may be going through the whole slough of QB’s. I still say Rausch has the quickest release of the three. He will surprise this fall.

  173. Jason April 15, 2009 9:15 pm

chawan_cut: I hope a baseball hits you in the face. 😀

postmanke: I too am a big Rausch fan. Haven’t seen him much this spring (only went to one practice, and concentrated on the O-line), so I can’t say how much he’s grown since last time I saw him. But he is a talented QB, as are Alexander and Austin. I love the talent we have at so many positions; now they need to be game-ready, so we can turn that talent into depth. That’s the difference between where we are now and where we can be in the future — we can recruit better players, but they need to be able to give us something on the field.

Looks like UH could be the final nonconference game that Washington State plays at Qwest Field. Washington State and U-Dub may end up playing their Apple Cup game each year there…with each getting $2 million every year!

Washington State University and the University of Washington are near an agreement to move the Apple Cup rivalry football game to Qwest Field in Seattle, The Spokesman-Review learned Wednesday.

WSU has played one home game each season at Qwest since 2002. The agreement between Qwest and WSU expires after the Sept. 12 game with Hawaii.

The major impetus behind the talks, according to the source, is financial, with each school in line to be guaranteed about $2 million a year from the Qwest agreement. Because of a revenue-sharing agreement now in place, each school clears about $240,000 when the game is in Pullman and nearly $800,000 when it is held at Husky Stadium.

NEW YORK (CNN) — Legendary football coach and broadcaster John Madden is retiring, he announced Thursday.
John Madden appears at the TV Critics Association Press Tour in Beverly Hills, California, in 2008.

John Madden appears at the TV Critics Association Press Tour in Beverly Hills, California, in 2008.

“It’s been such a great ride … the NFL has been my life for more than 40 years, it has been my passion — it still is,” he said in a statement released by NBC Sports.

Madden, 73, was a Hall of Fame coach for the Oakland Raiders, but is best known to millions as an ebullient football commentator.

He won 16 Emmy awards for outstanding sports analyst/personality, NBC said.

    http://www.dailynews.com/ucla/ci_12136900

The adidas shoe Paulsen is wearing is also coming under scrutiny, since the prevailing thought at UCLA is the sole of his shoe is too narrow and facilitated the injury.

Paulsen is one of three UCLA players to break the fifth metatarsal in his foot in less than a year.

The above quotes are from Brian Dohn, staff writer for the above mentioned domain.

The reason I bring this up is that I’ve read where some of our Warrior OL have complained that the UA shoes they’re wearing are restrictive and narrower than others they’ve worn in the past, too.

Does the answers lie with the players whom wear the shoes, a podiatrists, coaches or the UA company? Or is this a non issue, where the players are happy with their UA shoes?

Would wider, less restrictive shoes give the OL better balance and mobility?

Scanning some of the photos I’ve scrutinized I see the UA brand and no other brand amongst the Warrior players. But that’s not to say hidden under all that tape is a different brand of shoes. Scanning pictures of the OL shoes I mostly see the UA brand with no pictures I saw showing the players shoes taped up, which I realize taping the shoe can reinforce the foot and ankle. But I’m also beginning to think it can also disguise another companies brand of shoes, too.

Note-What is a Fifth Metatarsal Fracture?
Fractures (breaks) are common in the fifth metatarsal—the long bone on the outside of the foot that connects to the little toe.

If the players are happy with their shoes, then fine. However if they’re not then someone should advocate for what is right because it’s they’re performances and maybe a career ending foot injuries that may be on the line….

September 18 Programming Note: It is certain there will be a Tsai-ko gathering on Friday, Sept. 18 from around 6:00 PM (location to be determined). This Friday night gathering is to provide Tsai-kos from Hawaii and the mainland (international too) an opportunity to meet in person. Part of the program will be introductions in small groups

It is apparent that not all Tsai-kos would tailgate together on game Saturday. We have UH Alumni Association tailgate, SportsHawaii tailgate, Boyd tailgate, our tailgate, hotel and travel agency tailgates, etc.. SO, the Friday night gathering is planned for everyone who makes it to Vegas in time.
