Mililani LB commits to UH

Zac Quines of Mililani High told the Warrior Beat he has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors. Quines, a linebacker, said he is 6-3, 210 and once ran 40 yards in 4.68 seconds.

“Ever since I was little, this is something I always wanted to do,” Quines said of playing for the Warriors.

From UH:

University of Hawai‘i Athletics Director Jim Donovan announced the addition of a two-game, non-conference football series with Oregon State and a single non-conference game against UC Davis.

The OSU games are scheduled for Dec. 3, 2011 at Aloha Stadium and Sept. 13, 2014 at Reser Stadium while the UC Davis game is slated for Sept. 24, 2011 at Aloha Stadium. With the addition of both OSU and UC Davis, the 2011 schedule is complete.

“We are pleased to continue our series with Oregon State and to be able to add another quality Pac-10 opponent to our future schedules,” Donovan said. “We have many ties to the Pacific Northwest, especially with Oregon State, and this is an opportunity to strengthen our non-conference schedule in 2011 with another Pac-10 opponent. One of my goals when I was hired was to complete our football schedule several years out and with the help of Associate AD Carl Clapp, we’ve been able to accomplish that.”

In 2011, the Warriors open the season by hosting Colorado, Sept. 3, and then play consecutive road games at Washington in Seattle, Sept. 10, and at UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev., Sept. 17.

Hawai‘i and Oregon State recently completed a home-and-home series in 2008. OSU defeated the Warriors, 45-7, last season in Corvallis and 35-32 in the 2006 regular season finale at Aloha Stadium. The Beavers lead the overall series 5-3. The teams also met in the 1999 O‘ahu Bowl with the Warriors capping the biggest turnaround in NCAA history with a 23-17 victory.

Hawai‘i and UC Davis will play for the first time on the football field.

In addition to OSU, in 2014, the Warriors have games scheduled against UNLV and at Colorado.

Since last year, UH has announced new games with Army and Brigham Young (2012 & 2013), and extended series with USC, Oregon State, Washington, and UNLV.

    Great guests for the show!

  3. royvic December 9, 2009 6:44 am

Thankfully that was the last Call the Coach Show of the year.

Put a microphone in Coach Mack’s hand and he’ll spend twenty minutes telling the audience how he loves his players and coaches to death.

And he did. It was like listening to an eulogy.

And what’s worst he does it repeatedly with tunnel vision. And hype. And self promotion of his players.

When a caller called in suggesting as to why he doesn’t go after the big Midwestern recruits (linemen), like Wisconsin, he replied that he was happy with what he has.

He even painted this picture that his returning defensive tackles will be the best in the country.

Furthermore, the coach intimated that his defensive tackles (mentioned VM) are the best in the country. And are in the same league as the ones he’s coached in the pros. C’mon, gees. Warren Sapp, yeah right.

After a while and going through two cycles of listening to the coach you begin to recognize hype.

A good case in point from the past was the preseason fervor surrounding Funaki. Coach Mack’s own quotes were that Funaki was the best athlete on the team. And prior to the season we heard so much of the coaches manifestations and hype of how Funaki will be used in the wildcat, of how Funaki will play a big role in the offense. Yet when it was all over, Funaki after being promoted highly by the coach,… touched the ball what (?) 10 times the whole year.

You can even add the number of times he hyped his players, like the two LB from last year as how he described as can’t miss players going to the NFL. And his DE this year as he hyped up also as being a first day guy.

But the example of Funaki and others aren’t the only reason why I’m beginning to ignore Coach Mack’s hype.

For in Coach Mack’s world, and listening to BC interview, the coach says everyone of his players and staff is outstanding in their performance, which to some football purist I would think this is a aberration. Especially when you consider how in some games this year his players gotten taken for a ride. And his coaches were out coached.

So with the conclusion of the last Call the Coach Show it’s great that Coach Mack and his pom poms will be in hiatus for a while. Good.

  6. Garret December 9, 2009 7:02 am

I don’t mind Mack praising the players, but I do worry about him accidentally saying something on the radio that could cross the line for NCAA recruiting rules…if that was a national TV or radio interview, that could have been trouble for UH.

  7. Buffoman December 9, 2009 7:03 am

Good to get up early, top 10 again…record!

His show appears on the Internet.

  9. Buffoman December 9, 2009 7:13 am

royvic…whee, I though was jes me who thought what you just said. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the local players AND if we could keep all the local studs, I would agree more with coach. BUt that’s not the case, a ton of our studs go away and shine for other schools. Nothing wrong with that, so in that instance, why not look to getting some BIG “Wisconsin types” to come our way, as you say.

Let’s face it, I’d say only places like Texas and Florida can they field a team all from in-state and be top 5 in the nation. We have a lot of terrific local kids, but we don’t have the numbers like those places where studs grow like “sugar beets” and even when a local harvest is done, there still studs in the ground that others will take to their region to help their teams excel.

BTW, I absolutely agree with the “Funaki” statement. Even more reason why, that young man is being viewed as a top drawer Class Act.

  10. Bulla December 9, 2009 7:14 am

    Top 10 🙂

  11. Bulla December 9, 2009 7:17 am

    royvic,

well said, i don’t agree with his perception, but he is the Head Coach and that’s why he gets paid the big bucks. its great to be positive, but vision extends farther than what is in front of you…..

  12. Stephen Tsai December 9, 2009 7:17 am

I think Wisconsin’s linemen are perfect for smash-mouth ball, which it plays very well.
Would such linemen be good for UH’s four-wide passing offense? I don’t really know. I suppose if they have good feet. But imposing linemen with good footwork usually end up at the big-time programs.
There’s an age-old theory that recruiting should focus primarily on pass-rushers (whether they’re ends or backers), offensive tackles and cornerbacks. OTs always can move to guard; cornerbacks can become safeties, and then linebackers.

  13. Stephen Tsai December 9, 2009 7:20 am

UH actually needs to start looking for receivers. Next year’s seniors are: Greg Salas, Rodney Bradley, Kealoha Pilares, Jovonte Taylor, Malcolm Lane, Ryan Henry, Mike Tinoco and Dustin Blount.
And another running back. Alex Green and Chizzy Dimude will be seniors.

  14. Stephen Tsai December 9, 2009 7:26 am

I like optimism in a coach. It’s better than the guy who said he felt he was riding a donkey in Kentucky Derby.
I sort of wish he would list all of the things someone like Kazz Pomai needs to do in the offseason. That way he both praises a player and issues a challenge. And not generic goals like lose weight. Sometimes players take that literally, and only lose weight without working on other things.

  15. Stephen Tsai December 9, 2009 7:28 am

I think UH should make friends with Leigh Ann and Sean Tuohy.

  16. Kazz Pomai December 9, 2009 7:28 am

    Eh you saying I’m fat???

  17. Aji-nomo-toe December 9, 2009 7:29 am

Does that mean coach Mac dont need any linemen? They are all listening everyday. Look what is happening to Tennessee and surely more to come from other SEC just before hours of recuriting. SEC are very competitive and been in close proximity to each other, there has to be more of these occurrences.

  18. Pomai December 9, 2009 7:30 am

Do we have a David Farmer type in the depth chart??

    increase the audience, etc…

“I like to Cover it Live!”

    😆

  21. tommui December 9, 2009 7:44 am

Nothing like stroking your players. But sometimes you have to challenge them. Hopefully the coach does that one-to-one privately.

You can’t just come out and say that they are a bunch of plodders and his coaches are a bunch of misfits.

  22. tommui December 9, 2009 7:47 am

And a good morning to all.

Wonder how bad Kamoku Street is (water main broke in front of Iolani School) since our building’s entrance is at Kamoku Street!

  31. Old Diver December 9, 2009 8:25 am

Perhaps better questions to Coach Mack would result in better answers? I would have taken less calls from the fans and more prepared questions from BC. BC could have fielded questions from his listeners and come up- with five to eight questions we all want answers to.

  32. J-Dog December 9, 2009 8:29 am

Hopefully Gordy Shaw can use his juice from coaching at Minnesota to recruit some big O-line dudes from the midwest….

  42. madeinhawaii December 9, 2009 9:00 am

I’d rather have a coach that praised his players than one that berated them publicly. It does no good to belittle your players in public and now, the players now need to live up to that praise and hype. I’m sure they all want to — which is good, don’t you think? It’s all part of motivation.

Insofar as recruiting from Wisconsin.. when Coach Mack said he is happy with what he has… I wonder if he was simply stating that they are happy with the grounds/scources/schools that they are already recruiting from. There is no advantage to stretching oneself too thin in the recruiting game. They need to build relationships, history and traditions with the schools they recruit from to have the best chances of landing the best athletes from each.

  43. I love Pecan Pie December 9, 2009 9:02 am

    Continuing from last night,
    division one football playoffs…
Wouldn’t it be great if Obama declared one
with a Presidential Directive (to get people’s minds
off the economy and stuff) and banish the BCS system
as an illegal monopoly, and “command” the playoffs
to start in 2010. Boy, he would get my vote!

  44. I love Pecan Pie December 9, 2009 9:05 am

    Maybe I should have said,
“Man”, he would get my vote!
    :>)

  45. madeinhawaii December 9, 2009 9:06 am

    I love Pecan Pie.

I don’t know about playoffs.. but how about every D1a team be part of the BCS and share equally in the broadcast and bowl $$? Then UH would have several more millions in the athletic department to really build their program up…. unless the UH admin takes a larger “admintration” fee.

  46. Kazz December 9, 2009 9:18 am

Carried over from last night’s blog:

Opposing fans have every right to mock their opponents and trash talk, whether or not it’s “correct” is subject to interpretation. Athletic political correctness is not a forte of mine and I’ll leave that up to the analysts or for those that want to comment on a level playing field.

Bottom line is, no matter how much trash we, the fans, talk about upcoming opponents, it has no bearing to the outcome come game day. It’s simply a way for us to vent our emotions and personal biases. The game day outcome is completely up to the coaches and the players on both sides of the field.

If the coaches and players that read this blog feed off what is said and somehow influences their over-confidence or lack of confidence in anyway then that is a shortcoming on their end, not the fans’ perspective.

With that being said, I think we fans of UH look forward to meeting USC in 2010. I am sure all the Trojan players and fans will be ready and really LOUD coming off their Emerald Bowl win.

  47. al December 9, 2009 9:19 am

you seem to “get in the game” a lot more during the second half of the season. do you attribute your second half resurgence to more time spent regaining your strength in the weight room?

there is a critical time period for you to hold on to hope of regaining another year. knowing that the ncaa and/or the university’s admin department can lollygag over these things, how long will you stick around waiting for their “final answer”?

on paper it seems like a slam-dunk that you both should get back your last year of eligibility. we hope to see both of you in the warrior uniform next year, leading the team.

i know both of you went to arizona last year to train and there are some who say that you may do it again if you have another year here.

assuming that you get that extra year, do you think that it may be more important to stay back to lead the rest of the team in off-season workouts?

  54. Pomai December 9, 2009 9:34 am

  57. LizKauai December 9, 2009 9:41 am

Brashton, from your perspective as a player on the sideline this year, is there anything specific the team needs to round out its effectiveness to come out “a winner” at the buzzer?

Stephen: I wanna enter my name for tickets! 😛 Please, pretty please!

  63. Kazz December 9, 2009 10:25 am

    Rocky and Brashton,

Coach Mack said he spoke with the returning members of the team recently and told them that a team like Wisconsin is a blueprint of what a Top 25 team should look like and that it’s going to be on them (the players) to do the work in the off-season to get in better shape, to get stronger, etc…

During this past off-season, both of you did those things for yourselves. In your eyes, how effective or contagious has that kind of work ethic been with the underclassmen of this team and do you see more of the younger players taking it upon themselves to get better during the off-season and do you see that as a continuing trend?

  64. al December 9, 2009 10:34 am

#61 yup. kid can play and is under the radar. he was the heart and soul of the mililani defense.

The Warriors will host the Beavers at Aloha Stadium on Dec. 3, 2011 and play at Reser Stadium in Corvallis, Ore., on Sept. 13, 2014, according to a news release from UH

UC Davis – I mentioned them yesterday; today they’re on the sked – what a coincidence.

Hope they can move up to D1A in a few years; and join the WAC.

Good geographic fit; WAC is gonna need new members.

    Congrats to Matt!

  82. LOL® December 9, 2009 11:44 am

Coach Mack can turn up the hype machine all he wants and I’ll gladly eat it up so long as it yields results where we play competitvely and do not get blown out the way we did 3 times this season in our own stadium. It all starts with USC in 2010. As I’ve stated before, McMackin has this kindly public facade but behind it, he is one of those gruff salty dogs when it comes to coaching. While he may be a bumbling inarticulate when it comes to regular public speaking, I bet he can drop a string of very articulate non-pc f-bombs while talking x’s and o’s during team meetings.

I am also glad to hear that McMackin is open to change on his coaching staff because as I’ve stated before, he cannot afford not to make changes. Moving people around is not going to cut it. Ultimately, it is his neck and overall coaching legacy that will be on the line. I just hope the right ones stay and the ones who look like they are hanging around for their “high 3” and/or not getting it done with recruiting (which is an important performance metric per their respective position descriptions) are able to improve themselves elsewhere. The coaches I am fine with are Aranda, Shaw, Tormey, and Rolo. I would like to see Lumpkin bow out on his own terms because he has given much service to the university. Everyone else as far as I am concerned can go take a hike.

BTW, banishing the BCS is not going to be that simple. Remember, the BCS is just an evolution of the Bowl Alliance which was an evolution of the Bowl Coalition. This is all just fancy terminology for the traditional big money New Years major bowls (Fiesta, Orange, Rose, Sugar) which had traditional ties to the major conferences. Back in the old days, conference champions would play in specific bowl games and that was it. Eventually, smaller bowls with smaller payouts and less prestige started to appear which allowed a means for many more schools with just winning records to appear in post season play. Now, you can be .500 and still go to a bowl. BFD!

Because there was no playoff system in D1A and because the NCAA does not recognize a national champion in D1A football like the other subdivisions, there was always the issue of determining which team was #1. Because the major conference champs would only play in particular bowls (Big 12 champ = Fiesta, ACC champ = Orange, Big Ten and Pac-10 champs = Rose, SEC champ = Sugar), there were times when the two top teams could not play each other. So the different polls would sometimes have differing opinions on who was #1 and would thus, crown their own champion. The Bowl Championship Series included a system to determine #1 and #2 and pit them against each other in a game outside of the traditional major bowls. The negotiations also included some latitude for releasing teams from the traditional tie-ins for the purposes of playing in the BCS national championship game. The BCS itself considers ALL FBS conferences as BCS conferences. Some of these conferences are AQ (automatic qualifiers) and others are non-AQ. Most times, the AQ conferences are popularly refered to as “BCS conferences” because of how they automatically earn a BCS bowl bid but this definition is not the same as the BCS’ definition.

Put in simpler terms, way back when, it would have been virtually impossible for any conference not tied to one of these traditional bowls to play in these bowls and to receive any money from it. UH or Utah would never have been able to play in the Sugar Bowl before the current BCS system. So while the current BCS is far from perfect, it has offered a way for other conferences to now participate in these bowls and to get some share of the money (granted, non-AQ’s need to jump through some hoops to get there). Thus arguing the monopoly angle is not going to cut it. One more breakthrough this upcoming bowl season is the inclusion of two non-AQ conferences. Sure, they are being pitted against each other but who would have thought it was possible just an year ago to even see two non qualifiers in the picture. If the Cotton Bowl should successfully lobby to be included as another BCS bowl game in the future (which is why the MWC is making noise and why they are going to use TCU as leverage due to the proximity of that school to this bowl), this will allow even more opportunities for the remaining non-AQ conferences.

These traditional bowls are a big deal to the respective conferences that have had a long tie-in to them since they are after all, part of their long tradition. And who is to argue against traditions? Isn’t that something we are after here at UH? The issue for those major conferences is how to take part in a playoff system while maintaining their traditional major bowl tie-ins and that is where the disagreements come into play at that level. Your talking about a lot of schools that each have their own ideas.

    LOL®

Hawaii can never be a GREAT team with only (majority) local talent. The players, the coaches and ESPECIALLY the fans have to realize this. When Hawaii can put aside their bias and support a well rounded team, only then will they have a REAL chance. Otherwise, get used to seasons like this past one. Good former local high school players mixing a football program with it’s poly cult.

  86. Kazz (blkberry_storm) December 9, 2009 12:08 pm

I don’t mind when Coach Mack praises his players it’s just when he compares them to the greats he’s coached before. Comparisons are done when you have a body of work to back it up. So I really can’t fault someone if they don’t believe Mack when he says our DT’s are in the same league as his former star players. The statement is being made right after our defense got manhandled by Wisconsin. Like the guys from tv say, “C’mon Man!”

    Regarding # 82

What the BCS conferences are doing is not allowing equal access to the major bowls by all universities. Their argument is that we will bring in the most money so that makes it fair. Imagine if the NFL was run this way. Most of the time only the teams with rich owners and large television markets would make the playoffs. That is college football today. Of course in the interest of the entire league and in the name of competition the NFL wants a more competitive league so it has come up with countless number of rules to make things as fair a possible. This is of course a great way to counter your friendly conservative’s talking points when they say less regulation makes for more competition. Less regulation of course creates monopolies. A great example of nutty thinking is Republican Orrin Hatch of Utah (who is a staunch conservative who preaches no regulation leads to more competition) who wants Congress to create rules to make things more equal and fair for all universities. While the present BCS bowl setup is just fine if you are one of the big boys, wouldn’t things be more fun if we all had our chance to jump in the sandbox?

  90. royvic December 9, 2009 12:38 pm

Interpreting Coach Mack’s comments last night during his show, I believe he conceded that if any of his assistants are lured away elsewhere he could understand that. As he put it he sees assistant coaches, or people in general, should be taking advantage of their career opportunities. From what I gather from his comments it didn’t sound like he’s going to be personally swinging the axe any time soon with the staff that he has now. Trimming the deadwood to save the forest is any easy concept for most good coaches or CEOs to understand. With the said, lol, the editor of this newspaper and Coach Mack have a lot in common.

  91. Garret December 9, 2009 1:08 pm

I don’t know about playoffs.. but how about every D1a team be part of the BCS and share equally in the broadcast and bowl $$?

    madeinhawaii,

The NCAA *used* to have a system like that in place where the NCAA handled the national TV contracts for all of D-IA football, but the courts ruled against that system a long time ago. So, each conference was freed to pursue TV contracts in a capitalist-like system instead of the communist-like system that UH fans might want.

Even if they split the BCS bowl money equally, you still have the SEC getting $2 billion for its TV contract and the WAC getting around $1 million per year. Compared to that, the WAC is getting a *great* deal with the BCS. The facts are that the BCS Conferences bring in the TV dollars much more than the other conferences and an equal split would not be equitable to them. Most of those schools are public institutions, do you think it would be reasonable for them to turn down that money?

Article about the 5 recruits with Hawaii ties that Arkansas is recruiting.

It’s December and the University of Arkansas football program is going Hawaiian.

It’s expected up five players born in the islands of Hawaii will be making the trek to Fayetteville for official visits on the next two weekends.

That will get started this Friday when Butler Junior College defensive end Scott Smith (6-7, 275, 4.7) – the Jayhawk Conference Defensive Player of the Year – arrives for his visit.

The following weekend will see four high school stars from Oahu’s Kapolei High School in Northwest Arkansas.

That quartet includes linebacker Shaydon Akuna (6-3, 210, 4.5 – the top rated player in Hawaii – fullback Dustin Elisara (6-2, 225, 4.6) and linebacker Tuu Lolohea (6-1, 225) along with defensive tackle Foi Foi (6-2, 270).

  93. Garret December 9, 2009 1:13 pm

More team are in AQ Conferences than non-AQ Conferences for the BCS. If the BCS adds the MWC, then they will have a significant majority of D-IA teams. Adding the MWC also will get politicians like Hatch off their back…the Utah politicians are making a lot more noise than the Hawaii politicians.

Does UH do the “hostess” thing that is the talk of Tennessee right now?

When I was in college (Pac-10 school) they also had cute coeds that did things to try and get a recruit to come to the school. It was no secret. Many of the players first “real taste of college life” came from the “action” they got.

Remember the James Caan college football movie “The Program?” As over the top as it may be, many aspects of the movie are very very true.

    bb,

It is common for schools to have hostesses. What is against regulations is for the hostesses to travel to football games of high school recruits…they apparently went as far as 200 miles away from campus. I seriously doubt that UH hostesses would travel to games on the mainland to hold up signs for recruits. Contact with recruits on their recruiting visits is fine, traveling to high school games to see recruits is against the rules.

  106. Garret December 9, 2009 1:47 pm

    ai-eee-soos,

Sadly, the plans by UC-Davis have really been hurt by the budget cuts. It would be good to have them be a potential WAC team, but where are they going to come up with the money?

I’ve been on that campus a lot because one of my wife’s friends from Castle went there and we stopped by to visit with him on our way to/from Reno or Tahoe. Plus, we had a friend who was considering going there so we took a road trip there and spent a day exploring that campus.

  107. Garret December 9, 2009 1:55 pm

This is the budget environment at UC-Davis right now…no chance for them to come up with money to fund more of their Athletic program. Remember, to get to D-IA they have to spend a lot of money on facilities and scholarships before getting any real money in return, so they would have to take a big loss for many years to move up. That simply cannot happen during this 2+ year period of huge budget cuts.

Facing a loss of $813 million from the state, University of California President Mark Yudof is proposing widespread cuts for UC, including imposing unpaid days off on employees, eliminating jobs and killing out courses.

Some campuses have already made cuts. UC Davis has already shut down its liver transplant program, and UC Santa Cruz has axed some science and music classes, for example.

“There’s no way we’ll be able to look students in the eye and say this will be the same university,” Yudof said Friday as he laid out the plan he’ll present to the Board of Regents next week in San Francisco.

Those paid the least – $40,000 or less – would have to take off 11 days from work, for a 4 percent pay cut. Those earning more than $240,000 would be furloughed 26 days, for a 10 percent cut. In between are five groups of employees who will take anywhere from 13 to 24 days off without pay, amounting to pay cuts between 5 percent and 9 percent.

  108. Garret December 9, 2009 1:58 pm

Here is some info on the UC-Davis budget cuts…it was bad this year and will be much worse next year. Sadly, 2 years from now they will get another cut if current budget forecasts for the state are correct.

Campus faculty, staff and students are highly engaged in budget planning.
2008-09: $38 million in permanent reductions (state cuts, fixed costs, utilities)
2009-10: Estimating additional shortfall of $113 million (state cuts, fixed costs included UCRS)

Campus planning initiated this winter assumed $39 million, so we are not able to articulate all consequences of the higher cut targets at this time. Plans are being developed quickly.

We have (or will) eliminate over 700 staff positions on campus. In 2008-09 there were 157 layoffs and another 175 vacant positions eliminated. Our deans and vice chancellors advise that these numbers will increase next year.

    2006-07 “normal year” 57 layoffs
    2007-08 85 layoffs
    2008-09 157 layoffs

In addition to the 157 people laid off, UC-Davis eliminated 175 other positions.

    Regarding #91

(So, each conference was freed to pursue TV contracts in a capitalist-like system instead of the communist-like system that UH fans might want)

I believe “communist–like system” is being used by you to make a point but is really not being used correctly. “Revenue sharing like system” I think is what many universities want. Revenue sharing is used by many sports to even things out and make things more competitive. I would hardly call the NFL a communist like system. Revenue sharing which does not mean share equally is what I believe many universities are aiming for. Without it, as we have seen in the past ten year many won’t survive.

It’s good that Mack is a positive person and that he speaks highly of his players. At the same time I think he does often go a little over the edge on saying how much he loves his coaches and players. I kind of figured after the 9th time he said this season that he would stop.

Not to say he does not truly love the players and coaches but because its said so often and because of the circumstances of a lackluster season it *seems* less genuine to me and more about defending people on his staff and what not….

I am 50/50 on the “content with players we have now” and “best he has ever seen” kind of statements. I think we can always stand to do better given that there is more money and better facilities than 3 years ago. At the same time its like you can only do so much I suppose….It’s not hard to see that Coach Mack isn’t a “brand name” coach so it might be harder to persuade a kid to join the team if all things are equal and you have someone like Peterson or even Jones going for the same guy. We may have to take it for face value and realize that this maybe the best kids he is capable of getting.

the NFL is not a communist or capitalist system, it is simply an organized league where each team gets $81 million (maybe more) before the start of each season and can make their own money in various ways.

Imagine if each team from the D-1 gets $10 million (or more) per year to start the season and can raise additional within their own school, this would be the frist step to creating a level playing field. Right now the BCS is like major league baseball and they are always in front of congress to explain why they need their system, but time is running short and congress is slowly looking at taking away their exemption.

  125. RedZone December 9, 2009 4:31 pm

He has the frame to put on some pounds and with the way he played this year for Mililani I am really looking forward to what he can do as a Warrior. Once again Welcome Zac.

Now only if we can get maybe Dustin Elisara (sp?) or maybe a Tuu Lolohea to commit then we might be looking at a pretty solid recruiting class.

Oh and of course a commit from Lawrence Lagafuaina will be the topping on the cake.

    We’ll see.

    re #74.

Yeah the 2011 schedule is now complete.

only as long as the WAC stays intact. if any school leave, whether by greed or by necessity due to economics, it would be hard to quickly add another team to take their place that would make sense geographically. if UC-Davis or CS-Sacramento are not ready, then I see North Texas as the only alternative (don’t want to see any more Louisiana schools).

  131. kama krab December 9, 2009 4:44 pm

    Ralph #129,

Yep but Shaydon Akuna will go to a mainland school. I am figuring that it will be between Oregan State, Arkansas, and Florida State for Shaydon.

But we still have a good shot at Dustin Elisara even though Arkansas has all of a sudden joined the party for Dustin also. He has stated that he really would like to stay home and play in front of friends and family but he has gotten so much good offers that he will have mull over all of his offers befor making a final decision. I am hoping that playing in front of family and friends trumps big time facilities.

    We’ll see.

To answer your question I think the UH head coach has a handful of white elephants (i.e., something that outlives it’s usefulness like Aloha Tower) that should be replaced.

WR/Offensive Coordinator, DB/Secondary Coach, Strength and Conditioning Coach, DE Coach, RB Coach

New blood, new perspectives, new outlook, new and better communicators as teachers to the pupils, or players, would rejuvenate this program and undoubtedly improve it.

I’m tired of listening to excuses, like the players messed up their assignments because ultimately it’s a reflection of substandard coaching.

To listen to the ESPN announcer during the Wisconsin game puzzled as to why the UH WR slowed down on his pass route. And other laments throughout the season by posters, here, as to why there are two WR , at times, (as if in confusion) in the same area, as to why the WR doesn’t look back in anticipating the QB pass are few of the examples of the absence of adequate coaching of the WR.

The statement that one of the posters wrote alluding to a strength and conditioning coach as being worth it’s weight in gold is true. UH could do better. I think if the above changes were met I think the team would improve.

Revenue sharing which does not mean share equally is what I believe many universities are aiming for. Without it, as we have seen in the past ten year many won’t survive.

    Old Diver,

You do make good points in your post, but that is a different issue than what I was responding to. The post that I was responding to wanted all D-IA teams to share *equally* in TV money and bowl money. That would *not* be considered fair to the schools that bring in the bulk of the TV dollars and definitely is not providing incentives for teams to better themselves to earn more money.

You are correct that I purposely chose that word to illustrate a point to an extreme, but I did want to make a counter-point to what I’ve seen posted here hundreds of times. If we all just think the same way we can’t really have a discussion, so I’m trying to look at the other side of the issue.

The NFL works because you have a limited number of teams and so each gets a big slice of the TV revenue. The only way to do that with college would be to eliminate a LOT of teams, which would probably be the end of UH having football. To maximize revenue per team you need a limited number of teams, since TV is only going to show certain numbers of games per day, so teams with lower populations and/or higher travel costs could go. Just like there are no NFL, NBA, MLB, etc. teams in Hawaii, Hawaii would not be attractive in an NFL-like TV model.

However, you brought up an interesting issue of how equitable the bowl money is being split. Let us look at the facts:

SEC TV deal comes out to $3.05 billion over 15 years, slightly over $200 million per year. The Big 10 might actually get *more* than the SEC, but they started their own TV network to do so–the MWC tried to create their own network before the Big 10 tried, but only the Big 10 succeeded in getting big money.

WAC TV deal comes out to something like $1 million per year. 200 to 1 ratio.

SEC gets about $18.3 million from the BCS, plus another $4.5 million if they get a second team as an at-large selection. This year they will get $22.8 million since they have 2 teams in BCS bowls.

The non-AQ Conferences get $9.6 million (the automatic payment from the BCS) plus $9.6 million (from a non-AQ team making the BCS) plus $4.5 million (since a second non-AQ team made a BCS bowl). If the money was split equally the WAC would get 20% of $23.7 million, or about $4.7 million. In this case since a WAC team made a BCS game the WAC actually gets a much bigger share of the pot. JD said that the WAC gets $4.5 million from BSU’s appearance, plus the WAC gets 20% of the $9.6 million (the automatic payment) and a cut from TCU’s BCS money.

So, the regular season TV money has about a 200 to 1 ratio and the BCS money has about a 3 or 4 to 1 ratio. It sure looks to me that the BCS distributes money to the WAC *much* more equitably than how TV values the WAC.

The BCS is funded mostly by their huge TV deal and partially by the crowds they get at large stadiums. How much do you think their payout would drop if they dropped C-USA, Sun Belt, and the WAC in the event that the added the MWC plus BSU? In other words, who is bringing in that money that is giving $23.7 million this year to non-AQ conferences?

Did UH fans complain before that UH had no chance to play in the Rose Bowl or Sugar Bowl before the BCS started? Things were probably *less* equitable in the old system when the big Jan. 1 bowls paid big money and bowls like the Aloha Bowl paid much less…in those days the big-money bowls didn’t provide $9.6 million or $23.7 million to the conferences that didn’t have a chance to play in their bowls.

I agree with you that some football programs will not survive the current budget crunch that has forced states to cut back on University funding. Also, the rising costs due to salaries and facility needs are really squeezing the smaller budget schools. Ending the BCS and going back to the old system would hurt that situation even more.

“This is a great series for both programs,” coach Mike Riley said in a statement. “There are many connections between both states and schools. It’s a good experience for our players and I think it makes sense for both programs to play each other on a regular basis.”

Just starting now on K-Five. Wonder if Coach Mac could ask
Coach Nash for his throwaways… Remember when UH had

most players—luved watching him play then. Often thought
he would have been a great downfield wide receiver. And
some of those eastern Europeans would have made excellent
tight ends for offense. Maybe guys like that can be found by
Coach Nash who can’t shoot worth a darn but still want to come
to Hawaii and he can introduce them to Coach Mac…Hmmmm?

    Garret,

Great points and a very educational piece on BCS funding. Every football team except the three independent D1A football teams participate in revenue sharing. The problem is the size of the pie is different for the non BCS conferences. Fighting the BCS conferences is like fighting the investment bankers and health insurance companies. Their lobbying money will overwhelm any attempts to change the present system. So what to do? I don’t have any answers. Just thinking out loud though, easing the NCAA requirements on how many teams a university must field to maintain D1A status might ease budget issues. If you have any ideas I would be glad to hear them.

    Go Warriors!

But Adhar, Roderick and Hiram showed up tonight, hopefully the Diamond Head Classic will help them develop faster to compete in the WAC

  182. OldDiver December 9, 2009 9:44 pm

The main difference between post season Basketball and Football is who controls the money. NCAA of course controls the basketball money and the BCS and the bowls control the football monies. I heard at one time the basketball post season playoffs was over 90% of the NCAA budget. A football playoff system controlled by the NCAA would even out the payouts to all schools something the BCS will not tolerate. The BCS conferences have threatened to pull out of the NCAA before and that threat remains on the table. The result is the NCAA is too scared to to anything. Football playoffs may happen some day, but I don’t believe it will happen in my lifetime. Of course I’m old.

  183. Ralph December 9, 2009 9:49 pm

  184. Ralph December 9, 2009 9:50 pm

okay Al we want more recruiting news, what did the little birdy tell you?

  185. Garret December 9, 2009 9:55 pm

    OldDiver,

I actually should thank you because your post made me look up some things and I learned some things in the process. The thing is, I do not think that the money situation would change if they got rid of the BCS–the big bowls would still take the top teams for the big conferences. When BYU was in the WAC and won the national title, they played in one of the lowest paying bowl games…we can’t blame the BCS for that.

I completely agree with RedZone that the BCS Champion is not a true champion–we cannot have that without a playoff system. The thing is, even without the BCS bowl system, the money situation is completely imbalanced. Lobbying doesn’t matter because if every conference was suddenly entered into the BCS the money would have to be split twice as many ways and then maybe UH would get another $300k to $500k per year…which does nothing to counteract the $200 million difference in TV money between the WAC and SEC.

Everybody likes the NCAA men’s basketball tournament and every team has a chance to win the title. It brings in HUGE money and they give every conference a piece. However, they give the money out based on the number of teams in the tournament and the number of games they win, with bonuses for getting deep into the tournament. That means that the WAC probably gets *less* when compared to the Big 10 and ACC from the NCAA men’s basketball tournament than the WAC gets from the BCS in football! I honestly think that UH would get *less* money if there was a playoff system in place for college football…if they did things the way they do men’s basketball.

  186. Garret December 9, 2009 9:57 pm

    OldDiver,

The NCAA men’s basketball tournament does NOT even out the payouts to all conferences. The WAC gets a tiny portion of the money compared to the ACC and Big 10 and other top basketball conferences. You are asking for a revenue model that really could hurt the WAC and UH.

  187. al December 9, 2009 9:58 pm

you hurt his feelings by mispelling his name.

    its “little birdie”.

  188. al December 9, 2009 10:04 pm

it’s not that the mbb team sucks.
    really.

hiram thompson is their best point guard and is slowly returning to the potential he first showed several years ago before going on his mission.

lay needs to adjust to the game speed of d1 ball. he works hard on defense and must get comfortable in our offense.

williams was benched two games for undisclosed reasons and has stayed on the bench. he needs to play with confidence and shake off the disciplinary issues that he placed himself in.

kurtz has a long way to go with the system and needs to improve his first step on offense and defense. he plays too slow, though, somewhat faster than xiang. he has a long way to go.

too bad balocka the banger was out. he would have destroyed the soft middle of chaminade and would have clobbered bennett in the hole.

  189. Garret December 9, 2009 10:07 pm

But since you asked for solutions, I have a few suggestions that will probably never happen:

    1. Reduce the minimum number of teams that a college has to field to keep D-IA status. This will reduce the burden on many Athletic Departments…but what that will end up doing is killing a number of men’s sports. One of the first to go would be men’s volleyball, which is almost dead already since they are near the minimum number of teams to qualify as a sport, but financially Athletic Departments just cannot afford to keep so many money-losing teams.

    2. Get a strong commissioner for the WAC. Karl Benson doesn’t show any vision and he sure doesn’t stop BSU from publicly humiliating the WAC with their annual begging to get to the MWC. The WAC will need a strong commissioner in order to position itself for when the next conference shuffle starts.

    3. Cap salaries for coaches. They can make extra with endorsements or their TV shows, but their total compensation from the University needs to be capped to something like $1 million per year. This probably can never happen, but if it could then at least smaller schools could afford to pay their coaches a competitive wage. Mack Brown just got a raise to $5 million per year and there are probably 3 or 4 SEC coaches that will get near that amount in the next few years. If colleges can stop the spiral of salaries, maybe more of that money could go towards education or at least balancing their budgets.

  190. al December 9, 2009 10:08 pm

truthfully….this is not the most talented mbb team around. they lack firepower.

when you have a team that doesn’t shoot well from the outside the must play extra tough defense to offset that. playing tough defense will result in turnovers which normally result in many transition points aka layups. i don’t see them working very hard on defense which puzzles me because nash himself always was tough defensively. one would expect the coach’s characteristics to rub off on his team.

  191. Garret December 9, 2009 10:09 pm

Awesome feature on Davone Bess on ESPN!

Still, Bess has emerged as one of the NFL’s most trustworthy targets, a high-percentage receiver the Dolphins seek when it matters most.

“Unless you’re really watching football, you probably wouldn’t know about Davone,” said Colt Brennan, his quarterback at Hawaii.

“When I think about Davone, I think he’s the next big receiver you’re going to hear about. You haven’t heard about him yet, but he’s working his way up to somebody who’s going to be a big name in your mind for years to come.”

Bess does most of his damage underneath. While dizzying haymakers might garner the most attention, Bess delivers a succession of body blows that often get overlooked but can be just as effective.

“He can separate from any defender, and it’s tough to cover him,” Henne said. “Last time we played the Patriots, [Bill] Belichick was on the sideline, yelling ‘Why aren’t we pressing Davone?’ He’s a tough guy to press because he can beat you lateral, and he can beat you vertical, too.”

“Bess has great short-area quickness, much like Welker, but not a home-run guy or a bomb threat,” Scouts Inc. analyst Matt Williamson said. “Bess has impressive body control and very solid hands. He catches the ball away from his body and is quick to turn upfield after securing the football.

“He kills linebacker coverage that he sometimes gets in the slot, but he also is put together pretty well and can outmuscle a lot of smaller nickel cornerbacks off the line of scrimmage. In the slot, he is a real handful when given a two-way go and has a very good feel for coverages and how to present himself open to his quarterback.”

No wonder, then, that Bess is such an attractive option when it matters most.

He ranks second in the NFL in third-down receptions. Bess has 29 catches on third down (two behind New York Giants receiver Steve Smith), with 23 of them moving the chains (one behind Smith for the league lead).

“He’s never gotten the credit he’s deserved, but he’s gone out there and done it,” said Brennan, a backup quarterback with the Washington Redskins. “He’s a true football player and should be an inspiration to a lot of people out there.”

  192. Garret December 9, 2009 10:10 pm

Bess and Brennan were kindred spirits from the moment they met at Hawaii. Both vividly recall their first meeting in the summer of 2005, when they had a heart-to-heart talk on Bess’ front porch.

“There was a connection of me and him going through a lot and wanting to prove a lot, to defy the odds,” Brennan said. “We said ‘Why not shoot for the stars? Why not shoot for something great?'”

  193. Garret December 9, 2009 10:12 pm

I never heard this info from Colt before.

“I’ve heard stories of receivers grabbing quarterbacks and saying ‘Hey, I’m going to be open this play,'” Brennan said. “When I look back, I never remember Davone in three years telling me to throw him the ball this time. He just ran his route and did his job.”

Good

Then on the other hand, Royvic makes valid points too.

Me, I’m looking forward. I ‘m hoping for the Warriors. I’m hoping Coach has enough time to recognize this is business. for real. We got our cans handed to us, two years now/

you gotta get past the hype coach. get quality STUDS.. STUDS.

And on that note I found Royvic’s 152 straightforward. I don’t know all the ins and outs of the coaching staff, but it is my humble opinion that
IWWTHM’s earlier comment, about Coach saying in effect he is willing to look at things amd he’d understand if coaches looked at opportunities elsewhere as a part of the growing process….

i thought it was a nice way of waying change is coming. which is why i’m hopeful. If he wants to remembered by his players and coaches and public as being a great coach, he’s got to grow too.

i wouldn’t have said it like 152, but if I gotta say it, I’ll say I agree with 152. my biggest fear is: we’re going to get blown out again on national tv. our defensive backs gonna look like they don’t know whether to go left or right, we’re hyping Inoke in the preseason and he ends up sitting down most of the season…
you think the players were confused? I was confused…

but really truly really….I got hope. I’m hoping the recruits show us hope!

Zack Quines is showing me hope.

Thank you Zack! Go make grade.

    Go Warriors.

Terrible news about the passing Chris Pablo in today’s paper. I had the pleasure of working with him on various issues while he was a lobbyist for Goodsill Anderson. Truly one of the most kind and compassionate people I have ever met.

Morning Tsaiko Nation, I write to you with a HEAVY heart as my mom Grace Sanchez died last night peacefully in her sleep up Northern California. My mom was 81 years of age and all I can say she was a “TREMENDOUS” Mother who allowed me the opportunity to play “SPORT” in which she had no car, living in Compton, California raising myself, brother and sister as a SINGLE parent.

Mother Sanchez was STRONG as we walked everywhere as she had bad eye sight and couldn’t drive BUT her WILL for us to make it and put EDUCATION as a priority was deeply rooted as she graduated from USC with a bachelor’s in secondary education as a bilingual teacher who taught ADMIRABLY in the LA Unified School District.

When I decided to sign with you good folks my mom was right there as she endorse her signature for me to become a Rainbow Warrior and she visited me my Sophomore year as she stayed with the Carrol family of Oceanic Cable and your “ALOHA” was priceless to her as you treated her as a “QUEEN” as I thank you for that !

During the Rainbow Classic when I had my best game vs. Stanford she was in attendance at Blaisdell with a court side seat as the camera lens put her on the television screen and had a caption writing of her being “Cliff Sanchez Mother” as many fans in attendance came up to her to greet and meet her.

I am flying out Friday to San Francisco to lay her to rest as I and my wife Rhonda are so SAD of her passing. I could not ask for a better Mother who cared for me and MANY along the way in which she “GAVE” unconditionally as my HEART is so sad as I lost my truly “BEST FRIEND” !

Please pray for me during this time that I may remain “STRONG” as her wish to carry out her last will and testament I must over see as her executive to her estate. I have my Dodger Xmas Party for my children of the Center this morning as I will complete this event and then prepare for my journey of laying her to rest.

Mahalo for your time in reading my post as I remain.

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

My prayers join yours, Rainbow Cliff, for the progress of your mom’s beautiful soul through all the worlds of God, and for your continued strength through this time of worldly separation.

Rainbow Cliff, somehow the Christmas spirit will not be as bright, but your mom has done her job in a most gracious manner, and she will always be looking and caring for you and your family.

    RainbowCliff,

It seems like an eternity, but I once responded to one of your posts with how you’re a good steward to the community and a surrogate to your students. From your writings and messages I posted a post, once, of how I envisioned how you reminded me of the warden in the movie Born Free. I think I even said at that time that every time I hear the song Born Free I think of you and your students. I still do. I offer these words of comfort as you privately think back of the snapshots and dialogues you’ve had with your mom from beginning to end. I can sense that you’ve had a lot of good memories of your mom. My condolences and prayers are with you and your family at this sad time.
