At the end of every football practice, head coach Norm Chow leads the Rainbow Warriors in a three-clap salute to athletic trainer Brian Wong.
Wong probably deserves a standing ovation during the summer.
At UH, tight budgets do not include room for student trainers during the offseason. For yesterday’s beach workout, Wong loaded containers of water and ice to Waikiki Beach. He had to bring enough to supply water and a sports-drink mix for more than 80 players working out for 90 minutes. That meant setting up a hydration station, as well as an area to tape ankles and treat injuries. At the end of the workout session — at 7:30 on a state-holiday morning — he packed up the containers and headed back to UH to begin a full day of work.

Not sure about in taking ice water and iced drinks to hydrate….my experience in the field under the humid and hot conditions is to drink h2o that is “cool” and not iced. I noticed I didn’t perspire as much when I drank iced drinks, mainly water. After switching off to “cool” water, I kept perspiring right through. I noticed that I felt a lot better after and not as “drained”….Warriors should stay away from “iced” drinks and too much sugar….imho

The interest in UH football is definitely waning. Even though it’s the off season 40 comments seems awfully low.
Portugal did train at the Jets’ facility …
There are some interesting glasses the receivers are using. They serve as blinders, forcing the receivers to focus on the ball.
I too would like to read about people behind UH football like Brian Wong. Fun facts, best experience as a trainer, goals, etc. Human interest stuff, that makes me feel closer to the team.
Too bad UH doesn’t have the resources like a Texas. Their new coach has required all of his players to live in the university dorms. The AD bought out the remaining leases of players currently living off-campus.
Schools like Texas will probably have a 24-hour steak and lobster buffet for their players, with the new rule changes.
Soccer? Probably a team from South America will win it.

Just wonder how the rest on here feel….your thoughts….if Mr. BJ, would make public all his expenses while attending that meeting in Florida…plus the other 3…if they went there on the athletic dept. dime…maybe their names also…n their title n duties in relation to that meeting….
Me will not hold breadth 4 to long…but seems unfair to take n make cuts 2 programs…then turn around n splurge on ones self….if the receipts produce that….n if not …then hats off 2 the 4…for walking the frugal walk…n talking the frugal talk…
Just asking….if their paychecks came late…or deposited one week late…what would be their sentiments ?

I think I read an article the University of Florida is still receiving revenue from PepsiCo that sells the product because they still use the name (Gators).
Anyway, Gatorade is better than water due the the electrolytes present in the sports drink that is needed for proper re-hydration.

The screwup with the late money to the players fall on bj’s lap. He should cancel all his remaining trips and then he should fire himself.
Apparently the schools still gets kala from the 1966 sports drink.

I realize I’ve been out of it for a while, but, hey, when did they fix up Roosevelt? Nice field. I need to get out more often.
What I find perplexing is BJ’s idea of tapping into the the Asian Market who visit Hawaii by going to China. The countries that send the most visitors to Hawaii are from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand. Shouldn’t BJ be visiting those countries instead?

Why can’t they house the players in the empty dorms during times like this? Can’t they get some type of “emergency” exemption from the NCAA? UH AD and staff shouldn’t be traveling while this situation is unresolved. Are there still players sleeping in the locker room?
I can see rival schools putting together a folder about the troubles at UH for recruiting purposes. “We house you comfortably in our dorms on campus during fall camp.”
Helping UH with big time $ is a top 5 life goal of mine (i.e. underwrite the steak and sushi buffet training table). Might take 15 years, hopefully sooner. Hang in there, help coming.
It was mentioned that the checks were little over a week late. It was also mentioned that some were unable to pay for rent. I would think that the apartment complex would be flexible if the tenant was going to be a week late on the rent.
I wonder if this incident has happened before (late checks) but has not been reported, and that the only reason it became a story was because someone found out that athletes were homeless and staying in the locker rooms.

As stated before, UH housing charges $25 per day per person. That’s $175 a week, which goes back to the original: Where’s the damn check?
Not sure about anybody else, but at our work place, if you forget to sign your time card and you need the money, they’ll cut you a check.
Since the money already is owed and approved, not sure why the athletic department just can’t front the money until it’s covered by the delayed check.
Seems like a silly and unnecessary red tape.
UH is the perfect example of educators who talk-the-talk, but can’t walk-the-walk. I suppose that’s why they’re educators.

#42, it may be an educational institution but not all of its employees are educators. Now, if you say that’s the typical state employee…… Of course, that’s a stereotype.
Over these past few months I had occasion to interact with the UH ticket office regarding changes in my seasons tickets. It was a very disappointing experience fraught with (what seemed like) a lot of ineptitude and inability to accomplish simple tasks efficiently. I guess I have lived long enough to not get overly bothered by it and just patiently kept calling and encouraging the staff to complete the simple tasks that were needed. But it did give me a window into how inefficient the institution is. Say what you will about coach Chow and AD Jay. My sense is that they are up against a lot in try to implement their ideas. It is hard to imagine a well functioning athletic team functioning within a poorly run organization. It’s not impossible, just way harder than it needs to be. So the student athlete checks situation doesn’t surprise me. It does bother me to know that ineptitude gets in the way of young athletes simply getting what they were promised. When the athlete is late to a meeting or practice their behavior is confronted and sanctions applied. Somehow I can’t imagine thet those responsible for the checks fiasco are being held similarly accountable.

Checks delayed 9 days for about 60 athletes … read in SA now, before it is blocked.
About 60 Hawaii scholarship athletes were delayed nine days in receiving their summer funds, prompting some to sleep in a locker room while waiting for checks totaling about $92,000, university athletics officials said.

I apologize, been kind of busy small kine, but just the bday shout out and I wanted to thank all who thought of me that day 🙂 All is well with the Eastman ohana, ‘Da Beast’ is becoming an adult with 2 kids and working in Kaneohe, ‘Da Bomber’ Lynette is still managing 3 hotels in Waikiki, and I am still working with the hotels but also am on 95.5 The Fish, ‘Hawaii’s Only Live, Local, Christian Morning Radio Program’ from 0500-0900 Monday thru Friday, and on 99.5 The Word at night Monday thru Friday.
And you know my tag line….make memories, make memories, make memories 🙂

I knew a guy who began teaching at a local community college (that will remained unnamed, but there’s a Farmers Market held there every Saturday) in the fall (August). First, he was told that he wouldn’t receive his first paycheck until the end of October. October comes and goes, no paycheck. He calls the HR person and gets a snarky reply telling him that someone placed his payroll file in the wrong tray and the person in charge went on vacation, so he had to wait until December. The attitude of the HR office people was one of, “How dare you call us and question us.” In the meantime, he has bills piling up.
