The Warriors today held their final 11-on-11 workout of the summer. They have weight-training and running sessions tomorrow, and a beach workout Friday. After that, there’s a break of nearly two weeks before the opening of training camp Aug. 4.

At the request of defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga, former UH d-tackle Mike Lafaele served as guest instructor:

When Adam Leonard reported to the B.C. Lions this past Sunday, he was greeted by former Warrior teammate Solomon Elimimian. Both entered the UH program as freshmen in 2005, and played four decorated seasons without redshirting. Now Elimimian is the Lions’ starting middle linebacker. Leonard, who signed a two-year contract, is on the practice squad. For now.

“I’m going to work hard, and try to get activated,” Leonard said.

It was a couple of months ago that Leonard first learned that the Lions owned his Canadian Football League rights. The selection of rights is not always publicized.

“They can take the rights to players, and the players don’t even know about it,” Leonard said.

Leonard, who completed his UH eligibility after the 2008 season, had a couple of NFL tryouts. After learning of the CFL connection, Leonard’s agent asked the Lions to clarify the situation. Last week, the Lions made an offer to Leonard.

Leonard said he will earn the CFL minimum salary, which is listed at $30,000.

Leonard said he hopes to eventually compete for one of the two linebacker positions in the Lions’ defensive scheme. He has studied the playbook, and said he knows the concepts of the middle and weakside positions.

“It’s good to have another opportunity to play,” he said.

More importantly, Leonard said he is on track to earn a bachelor’s degree on Aug. 14. He is taking an online class this summer.

“It’s my final course,” he said. “I plan on walking (in the graduation ceremony) in December.”

Yes, Mendocino College safety Darryl McBride is joining the Warriors as a walk-on. Here’s his highlight video: McBride.

An interesting idea is being floated around the Upper Campus. The proposal is that on the Saturdays when the Warriors play at Aloha Stadium, the swap meet could be held on the UH campus. More specifically, it would be set up on the ground level of the parking structure. There’s plenty of space, and setup would be easier because there would be no need for tents. Buyers could park on the upper levels. Traffic would move briskly since drivers could exit on the fifth (street) level.

    Just watched the video.

Listed at 6’3, 200, Darryl McBride sure can lay the lumber.

Hope he can start training in the fall camp, instead of when school starts.

I think he going see plenty PT.

    This is a *great* idea!

UH wins because it collects parking money and maybe the money that each vendor pays for a booth at the Stadium swap meet. That is a new source of revenue for UH and the parking garage probably isn’t used that much on Saturdays when there is a football game.

The swap meet vendors win because they get a full day of sales when before they either had reduced hours or no swap meet on game days. In addition, they might get some new people to attend the swap meet if it is at UH…some people (students, Manoa residents, etc.) might feel that Manoa is more convenient and would go when they wouldn’t have gone to the stadium.

  14. Garret July 21, 2010 2:50 am

Good to know that Darryl McBride is walking on to UH. If he proves himself, he could earn a scholarship and if he does not, UH doesn’t waste a scholarship.

  15. Garret July 21, 2010 3:00 am

The swap meet currently charges each buyer over 12 years old $1 to enter the swap meet, so I guess UH could charge that $1 per person.

Vendors pay a bigger fee, with the fee determined by location and size of booth, which is where Aloha Stadium makes their money from the swap meet and UH should be able to do so also.

Concession rights would also make some money.

  16. Garret July 21, 2010 3:02 am

Leonard said he is on track to earn a bachelor’s degree on Aug. 14. He is taking an online class this summer.

This is awesome news. Congratulations to Adam Leonard for following through with what he needed to do to earn his degree.

  17. popo July 21, 2010 3:30 am

If you’re going to have a swap meet in town, then have it at Alapai/King/Kapiolani and get Queen’s, The Board of Water Supply, and Straub Medical to open up their parking lots. Why make it so that you have to drive, when there’s major buslines right there?

  18. Garret July 21, 2010 3:57 am

This is a nice summary of how the next window for the MWC to expand is in 2 years–I’ve discussed why that timing is important for the 2010/2011/2012/2013 BCS evaluation period. Some team will win the WAC in 2011 and be ranked in the top 25…computer points are power in conference realignment, and another of the BCS criteria how many top 25 teams a conference has.

So, the latest news about McBride, Lancer Tuitele, Burton Iosefa, and Sterling Jackson all joining from JCs might seem to go against the statements that UH wants to focus on high school recruits. However, the next 2 years are *critical* for UH’s future and getting players that might be able to contribute right away can help…a high school recruit that will grayshirt won’t even play for the Warriors during this 2-year period.

Win the WAC. Get ranked in the top 25. Those should be the goals for 2011 that could determine the future of the softball team, baseball team, and the rest of the Athletic Department’s future. A strong 2010 season with a Hawaii Bowl win can give UH the momentum needed to point to 2011. If that happens, I wouldn’t be surprised if McBride, Tuitele, Burton Iosefa, and Jackson play a part in this 2-year run.

I’ve read projections that MWC schools are expected to get $2 million to $3 million more than WAC schools from their conference payout (higher TV money, more NCAA basketball money, etc.). Coupled with the student athletic fee, UHAD would no longer have a deficit and would be able to use its surplus to upgrade its programs.

Win the WAC. Get into the top 25. The alternatives aren’t pretty. At least this will be settled on the field instead of at some secret airport meeting.

The next window for MWC expansion is June 2012 because we will then be 2 years into the next 4-year BCS Evaluation cycle, and like with Boise State, will have a June 30 deadline to invite new schools that might then help with BCS points during that evaluation period. All Houston and Fresno (or anyone else) need to do is finish in the Top 25 at the end of the regular season in either of the next two years and they will then be demonstrably beneficial to the MWC’s goal of achieving (and keeping) AQ status. I realize Top 25 performance is less comprehensive than your more thorough analysis, but that has been deemed more important by the BCS, and like the 4-year period, is therefore more important.

Obviously, the Big12 is a wildcard and could change things, but if left to its own devices, the MWC is likely to consider expansion next in June 2012. The decision might be yes or no at that time; depending on how the expansion candiates do in the next two years.

Good morning Tsaikos from Fredericksburg, VA!

Saw the Air & Space Museum near Dulles Airport yesterday. Great place to go if you’re in the area. Shuttle, SR-71 Blackbird, Enola Gay among the artifacts on display.

Off to a nearby amusement park.

Think the idea of a swap meet at UH is a good one. Gotta be careful about scheduling of other Lower Campus events on those days.

    Congrats to Adam Leonard!

    OFF-SPORTS TOPIC:

We need the services of a licensed electrician to install a timer on our hot water heater. Using the Yellow Pages, we’ve called over a dozen electricians starting back in mid-May. We have yet to find someone willing to take the job – either no one returns DrDoc’s initial call or the electrician sets an appointment and then postpones it. The most recent guy has canceled the appointment three times and is unwilling to set another one.

If you know of a competent licensed electrician who would be wiling to come to Kailua to install a timer on our hot water heater, please e-mail me at swood at hoku dot com. Please be sure to include your real name and your daytime phone number so I can get the name & contact information.

  33. Bigislandkurt July 21, 2010 6:43 am

I think the emphasis is still on High School recruiting. But if them boys cannot qualify, then coaches have to be able to offer the next BEST available players. We all know that if folks like Lolohea and Quines were able to get qualified, we would have never heard of Jackson, Mcbride, tuitele, etc.

The JUCOs are filled with great players who miss the boat and don’t get signed. They represent a good “safety net” for coaches who find themselves having to fill a roster. I’m guessing these JUCO players have been on the waiting list for a while. Coaches always need to have a contingency plan in the event high schoolers don’t qualify. It’s admirable to that McBride is actually coming on his own dime.

Will all those food vendors be willing to go the the UH parking structure? I hope so, as the Kam Drive In Swap Meet is where to go for cheap vegetables, like paria, kalamungai, talong, squash. etc.. Just researched what ST means.

    Check video.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11iy5WyHyKM

2007 team in this video, in it’s game against Washington, paid tribute to Sean Taylor by having the ST sticker on the back of their helmets.

Sean Taylor was the former Washington Redskin’s safety, 24 years of age, that was brutally gunned down on November 27, 2007 by an intruder.

  68. Kazz July 21, 2010 9:20 am

    Lame is not stating facts.

James Dean is no longer with us.

  69. madeinhawaii July 21, 2010 9:24 am

    bb,

Yep.. lots of big trucks… labor intensive hauling of goods to sell in the structure unless these trucks can back up close to the structure, several at a time. While the notion of having the Swap meet at UH sounds good on paper, several other factors need to be considered. Much of the swap meet business comes from tourists. Advertising will need to be well planned. Vendors should be limited to no more than two booths that are apart from one another (They can have as many strung together, but no more than two in separate locations to cut down on the redundancy and to promote variety. Redundancy is a sore point that is killing the swap meet.) There used to be a swap meet at the old Waialae Drive In… it never took off. Lack of interest from the community. Need to combine the swap meet with the farmer’s market group. Then it would work.

  70. Kazz July 21, 2010 9:24 am

You could’ve fooled me! Thought you were in your 60s like me…

  85. A-House July 21, 2010 10:02 am

Is UNLV in need of a QB? Is not the current starting QB a transfer from USC? Should be a junior or senior in 2010.

  86. gigi-hawaii July 21, 2010 10:03 am

    homey,

James Dean I know, but who the heck is John Deere? Or should I google him, too?

  87. A-House July 21, 2010 10:03 am

    Gigi:

Did you not post several days ago that you are 55 or 56 years old?

many “lost moments”, but could not let this pass! hehe

  88. gigi-hawaii July 21, 2010 10:04 am

    A-House,

huh??? never!!! You are the one who is in his 50s.

  89. A-House July 21, 2010 10:04 am

    Gigi:

John Deere is a maufacturer of machines – don’t you remember the lawn mower commercial?

  90. A-House July 21, 2010 10:05 am

    Gigi:

I luv you when you make me to be 55 years old!!

  91. gigi-hawaii July 21, 2010 10:06 am

    A-House,

nope, I am not into lawn mowers, sorry!

  92. ╦╤─ homey ︻╦╤─ July 21, 2010 10:06 am

Let me see. You don’t need an electrician to install a water heater timer. DIY. (J)J can do it.

  93. gigi-hawaii July 21, 2010 10:07 am

A-House looks younger than James. Tee-Hee. more strong, too!!!

  94. Shoko July 21, 2010 10:08 am

    A-House,
UNLV primarily used three quarterbacks during spring practice — senior Omar Clayton, who started most of 2009 before being injured, junior Mike Clausen and redshirt freshman Caleb Herring.

  95. (Jesse) James July 21, 2010 10:08 am

Homey….C’mon…everyone knows JD is Jack Daniels….brother-in-law of Jim Beam

  96. (Jesse) James July 21, 2010 10:09 am

gigi…what are you saying about A-House???

  97. (Jesse) James July 21, 2010 10:09 am

    gigi…I’ve seen A-House working out at the gym….you’re right…scary….LOL

  98. gigi-hawaii July 21, 2010 10:10 am

Now, Jack Daniels I know!!! You are speaking my language, James. Though I gotta admit, I don’t know him intimately…

Got to practice & kibutz’d with Kekoa. Looking good! Dunnachie’s glad to be back; it’s cold ‘down under’ right now, since it’s winter. He was training & playing Australian football.

Stopped in at Petals & Beans after breakfast with Kekoa & his nephew. Got to meet chopsueyboy, flowergirl and their son who leaves tonight. Nice place!

Swap meet at UH should be on the top floor at street level to draw walk-in traffic. Good idea!

  122. Committed Road Warrior July 21, 2010 1:17 pm

Nice to hear that Adam Leonard is getting a shot in the CFL!

So is his salary $30,000CAN, or $30,000USD? I guess in the end it doesn’t matter, relatively speaking, as $30,000CAN = ~$28,600USD

  123. Committed Road Warrior July 21, 2010 1:23 pm

I wonder if jm2375 is still down in Fredericksburg…..

I ask because I usually stop there to eat along my way back home from work on the days I’m dispatched to go to the Naval base ~25 miles east of town. It’s been a couple weeks since I was last down there…I think I’m due for another work-day there pretty soon…

Agreed. 1. Inside the parking structure is dark – would need lighting.

    2. Vendors can set up their usual tent/awning.

    3. Vendors can drive their tall vans/trucks onto top floor – may not “fit” on lower floors.

    4. Don’t know if barbecue grills will be allowed.

    Yep, great idea.

I was gonna tell him that I got my travel reservations booked to Denver for the UH-CU game on 9/18.

Oh well, I’ll drop him an e-mail that he can tend to whenever he has time (or bandwidth).

  140. RainbowCliff July 21, 2010 3:42 pm

#51 Old Diver: You are quite welcome sir as Gib Arnold can recruit BUT recruiting can only get you so far as the ability to control a game, strategically make adjustments and develop cohesiveness among his talented core will be an area that ALL of UH b-ball fans will be watching.

Philosophically, I do believe Gib has the right idea of what and how this era of division l college basketball is being played as it is a game where you see more athletic talent by spacing the court and having the high pick n roll with a QUICK guard that can penetrate the seams while drawing the defense for weakside lay-ups from your bigs or dishing out the rock for the spot up jumper !

Defensively this team should be EXCITING as his man to man principals are solid and IF he really plays some NBA rotaion on the double down then these athletic young players will flourish with defensive steals, hands in the passing lanes, lead passes and streaks of lay ups and dunks as the Stanley will be LOUD with excitement and approval !

Conditioning these young stallions and meshing them with the returning players will be Coach Gib major challenge as he is young enough to meet the opportunity and BUILD the bows basketball program hopefully back to “RESPECTABILITY” as it will take time and patience from ALL who supports Rainbow basketball.

    IMHO !

  141. Lux Painter July 21, 2010 3:47 pm

#52 Last Call: Lady Sky Walker had a good tournament in Phoenix as she met personally your assitant coach Kari Ambrozich who said some nice things about her as my girl called father sky walker of the exciting news !

Recruiting is very interesting for her as Arizona, Illinois, Norfolk State and Temple University are offering a full ride as Ambrozich said it best in her e-mail to me that “sky walker is a nice player with a LOT of potential” as Hawaii did leave her information on wahine volleyball.

Father will be going with her on her vists as she will vist ALL mention schools above and is very excited about her opportunities to play and receive an athletic volleyball scholarship !

I know Father sky walker wants her close to home BUT east coast and mid west has shown a lot of interest as she still have her senior season to be played.

Either way it goes I am there for her national signing day as Father has reserved the blue water grill seafood restaurant in Newport Beach for this WONDERFUL occasion as a full capacity of love ones, supporters and friends will be there to witness her long awaited dream as she and Father has put in the time ( Dad $ for club volleyball) as I am happy for the both of them !

    Mahalo for your interest.

Welcome Carlotta Mingo, coach Dana’s fourth recruit for next season. Born and raised in Guyana until 14, she was educated and played bb in New York, a Brooklynite. I hope the girls play as intensely as the boys in the NY playgrounds

  153. Ralph July 21, 2010 5:50 pm

Coach Dana could use a few athletic 3,4 and 5 position players to control the paint offensively and defensively.

  154. Kekoa July 21, 2010 6:37 pm

As mentioned by Slugger…Alex is back, booming those punts and seeding the clouds! He also said that he has been practicing both punts & fg kicking with a coach while he was ‘down under.’

Slugger and I extended an invitation for his family to t-gate with the Tsaiko’s when they come up in October. He is really looking forward to the start of the fb season, and very happy to be in warm weather again as it is winter time in NZ.

I can’t wait to see the coverage team come downfield and surround the receivers who will undoubtedly have a hard time fielding those rainmaker punts.

    Hmmmm…

The Warriors today held their final 11-on-11 workout of the summer. They have weight-training and running sessions tomorrow, and a beach workout Friday. After that, there’s a break of nearly two weeks before the opening of training camp Aug. 4.

Bet some will still practice during those two weeks. Why not?
It is unsupervised. Maybe toss a football in the ocean and chase
each other in waist high water…

    SteveM update:
Enjoying the views of Skagway and Alaska in general. Traveling with his mom and sister and missing the Tsai-kos big time. The bowling alley has 2 lanes ( I think). The only cell phones that work there are ATT.
The karaoke finalists don’t hold a candle to the Tsai-ko Allstars – and he really likes the Norwegian Pearl!

  162. A-House July 21, 2010 9:14 pm

    Kekoa:

I’ve been put in deep distress and state of shock so many times I’m getting dizzy – like combat fatigue – brain goes into a major “funk” with slow recognition, processing of information, and reacting to the situation!

But, I tell me self that you gotta push on – accomplish the mission.

#156: Mrs A House: From my understanding all scholarships are gone for the incoming class of 2011 for Hawaii as lady skywalker is a middle blocker and the schools mention above will keep her there in that position as she has played it the majority of her athletic volleyball career.

Right now she is on the sands of Orange County beaches playing volleyball and enjoying
the surfing guys and girls. We don’t want to burn her out as recruiting trips are lined up
this summer and begining of fall as the mid west and east coast schools will be visited before winter ends as she will make her choice after the new year as Arizona is really
my choice for her BUT it is her decesion !

List of the top recruits in Orange County. Last year UH went after several of the recruits that were on the list and I’m sure that this year we’ll hear about some of these prospects being recruited by UH.

  181. Garret July 22, 2010 4:11 am

It was great for the WRs and QBs to work out with Jordan Palmer.

It was great of Michael Lafaele to inspire and give tips to UH’s defensive linemen.

Honolulu’s Michelle Wie rallied from a rough start to finish with a 4-under-par 68 today in the first round of the Evian Masters at Evian, France.

She is tied for sixth place with six other golfers.

    Go Michelle !

  198. NYUH July 22, 2010 7:49 am

Good article on Palmer’s visit. Warmed my heart until I thought – is he spying for USC? Oh well, all’s fair…

  199. Pauoa Boy July 22, 2010 8:09 am

Nah maybe Carson would spy but Jordan Palmer not so much. Maybe he’s scouting some of our boys and putting in a good word with the Bengals coaches. Although I wouldn’t want Greg Salas or Kealoha Pilares having to play alongside Chad “Twinkle Toes” Botocinco…

  200. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 22, 2010 8:09 am

Good morning everyone. Let’s get a new blog post up.

  201. RedZone July 22, 2010 8:14 am

    Richardson field is softball field.

UH needs to find another softball magnet like Puu Warren.

  202. Pauoa Boy July 22, 2010 8:16 am

Mike Lafaele still looking like a beast, hope the boys have soaked in what he has to teach. Although undersized for a D-5ackle you could never tell as he always played bigger and badder than everyone else! I hope Vaughn and the rest of the DLine bring back the head-knocking, kill the QB mentality this year. If they can control the trenches like they did in last years Navy game, we will kick errybody’s arse no doubt!

  203. Kazz July 22, 2010 8:40 am

    What’s a softball magnet?

  204. Kazz July 22, 2010 8:42 am

Oh nevermind. Just got that now… Hehehehehehe..

Pu’u-Warren was a fun player to watch. Not enough was said or noticed about her outfield performance last season… Actually… not a lot was said about the overall steady outfield performance all last season.

  205. Slugger July 22, 2010 8:49 am

    Good morning!

    Kazz,

I think Kanani is going to be on campus this next year completing her degree but not playing. She did a great job in right field.

  206. Kazz July 22, 2010 8:51 am

There will be several intangibles/unmeasurable elements to replace next season to ensure another WAC title and a WCWS appearance.

I am a BIG proponent of proper leadership on the field and off of it. Unless you were at the games live for the whole season, it was hard to pick up on the way the seniors held this team together no matter the situation. For those watching on TV during the height of their popularity, I can imagine a lot of people thought the real engine that drove the home run hitting train was the “front four”, but while it was the engine of sorts, the fuel was in the senior class.

For the returners, they are the leaders now, and they must step up to where Grimes, Taualii, Pu’u-Warren, and Yoshikawa left off.

  207. mctruck July 22, 2010 8:59 am

For all we know????….maybe Jordan Palmer was sent down specifically by the Bengals as a vacation/scouting trip to check out some prospective recievers they might be interested in the year-end draft???, hmmmm?

  208. Kazz July 22, 2010 9:14 am

Not surprising to read about Bengals involved in an unofficial capacity with UH football.

Local business man and philanthropist Dr. Edison Miyawaki is a partial owner of the Cincinnati Bengals and a UH supporter. Rich Miano has said several times that through Dr. Miyawaki’s efforts, several UH coaches are able to enjoy the benefits of coaching clinics or whatnot at the NFL level.

  209. Pauoa Boy July 22, 2010 9:14 am

mctruck, I was thinking the same thing lol. Probably trying to get a headstart on some of our NFL prospects of the future.

  210. Slugger July 22, 2010 9:16 am

    ST ~

Ooooohhhhh, so was Jordan Palmer standing next to you watching the QBs & receivers when I was hanging out with Kekoa? He must have worked out with the receivers before I got to practice.

  211. Pauoa Boy July 22, 2010 9:22 am

Greg Salas looks like he packed on a few pounds of muscle for this upcoming season. Love seeing him truck stick the ish out of little DB’s. Also looks like Darius Bright got some good size and is not all skinny manini, hope he is the answer to becoming our redzone threat this year. Seems we are pretty stacked at WR this year so there should be no reason why the scoreboards aren’t being lit up all season. Lets get back to those 40-50 point plus games and stomp everyone especially Boise State and send em off to the MWC with a Warrior Haka slap to the grape.

  212. d1島 July 22, 2010 9:42 am

Oh well, so much for all the time, effort and money spent cultivating Kauai football fans for UH football….

A beloved Kauai tradition is going to the birds. On Wednesday, leaders decided to move regular season high school football games from Friday nights to Saturday afternoons.

It’s all to save some threatened shearwaters.

  213. Ralph July 22, 2010 9:54 am

USA national team softball vs Canada on ESPN at 2 pm, repeat on ESPN2 at 7:30 today

  214. Kazz July 22, 2010 10:01 am

    Ralph,

    Is that 7:30PM tonight?

  215. madeinhawaii July 22, 2010 10:19 am

    Pauoa Boy:

I’m hoping AVery and Bright, with their height advantage, gives us a Red Zone edge by pulling 2 players deep off the line into the end zone with Salas and Pilares on the perimeter… pulling two more wide… One on one, our guys should be able to punch it in when the pass isn’t the option.

  216. papajoe2 July 22, 2010 10:24 am

Looking at the SA today, I don’t gamble except for slots and occaisional black jack in Vegas, but what is the Glantz-Culver Lines? Can you explain at Florida -220 Colorado +200? I don’t know what the points mean or the formula to get those points.

  217. cheepono July 22, 2010 10:49 am

    new post up.

  218. Shoko July 22, 2010 11:03 am

    PJ2,
Thats the money line. A negative number means that team is the favorite and the positive numbers means that team is the underdog.

In this case, Florida odds are -220, meaning an $22 bet would win $10 for a return of $32. Colorado odds are +200, meaning a $10 bet would win $20 for a return of $30.

I thought you live in Vegas? You should know this! 😆

There’s a book known as “Avoid Retirement And Stay Alive”. The thought would be the truth that retirement has no area in modern-day society. In the event you can easily make perform pleasant by balancing it against the other points you’d probably like to accomplish, then you have the ability to reside like you’ve got all of the time inside the globe.
