Governor’s greeting

846Powell, Abercrombie, Rauscher

Soon after arriving in town, newly hired assistant coaches Lewis Powell and Phil Rauscher received an unexpected greeting. Gov. Neil Abercrombie and AD Jim Donovan welcomed both coaches with lei.

After reading of the hirings, Abercrombie called Donovan, asking if it would be a good  idea to greet the coaches. Abercrombie then made the arrangements.

Rauscher arrived first, after which they waited in the governor’s lounge until Powell’s arrival.

That, of course, answers two important questions:

1) The governor believes UH football is important.

2) The airport has a governor’s lounge.

Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said a deal is nearing completion in which Utah and Hawaii would play a home-and-home series as early as the 2014 season.

The teams have not met since 1998, the Utes’ final season in the WAC. Utah was among eight schools that seceded from the WAC to form the Mountain West Conference in 1999. The Utes just completed their inaugural season as Pac-12 members. The Warriors join the MWC in July.

Justin Wilcox appears to still have large ties to the west (and the PNW in particular), so I figured it was only a matter of time before they left Tennessee for a position in more ‘familiar’ territory.

  50. Old School Dave January 2, 2012 10:13 am

Re #44: Agree. Justin Wilcox has been a successful assistant and DC at all of the places he’s coached at (California – LBs, Boise State -DC, Tennessee -DC). His defense was the one bright spot for UT. He has HC written all over him. He should improve a sorry UW defense.

  51. Old School Dave January 2, 2012 10:16 am

BTW, I’m wondering if Wilcox will be earning the same money as fired UW DC Nick Holt. Holt was making $650K, which irked many UW fans. Wilcox was earning around $600K as Tennessee’s DC.

I have learned that Tennessee defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox and linebackers coach Peter Sirmon have accepted the same positions at Washington.

    Happy Gregorian New Year!

(my new year is March 21)

Mahalo, ST for doing your job and bringing out the facts and the feeling about our new HC.

    I am officially on board.

To me, it’s gonna be nothing but

    Coach Chow

    period

no nicknames, no jokes, just serious football.

There is a team of future graduates of the University of Hawaii that wants to play with pride for Hawaii. Coach Chow is now our HC and has picked up the reins of responsibility for guiding the Warriors to success.

    Go Warriors!!!

  75. Garret January 2, 2012 12:31 pm

Home-and-home deals with any Pac-12 schools would be great for UH. With their new TV contract, getting Pac-12 schools to play on the road will be increasingly difficult, so it would be great if Coach Chow’s ties help UH get home-and-homes scheduled with Utah.

Utah will benefit with an increased recruiting presence in Hawaii, but that will be the case for ANY Pac-12 school that UH plays. If UH wants interesting home games, the teams that want to recruit in Hawaii are the types that will agree to the deals.

  76. Garret January 2, 2012 12:33 pm

Note to the Star-Advertiser IT department:

For some reason, Insurance News bypassed the Star-Advertiser’s pay wall and printed one of Ferd’s columns in its entirety. The weird thing is that it appears that all of their other articles are related to news on insurance issues, so I don’t understand why Ferd’s column was there.

    http://insurancenewsnet.com/article.aspx?id=321347

  77. Garret January 2, 2012 12:34 pm

Colorado State just hired Utah State’s OC. So, UH will probably face a similar style of offense from the MWC’s CSU than they have faced from Utah State.

Utah State offensive coordinator Dave Baldwin is leaving the Aggies to take the same position at Colorado State, a source close to the program said on Monday.

looks like brian hawthorne, cb, santa monica was offered a scholie by uh.

  81. Derek January 2, 2012 12:52 pm

I think Coach Chow will know the players’ names with no problem. I also think Coach Mack was starting to lose it, meaning his mind wasn’t as sharp. With all the things go on in a game he probably got confused at times. Calling 2 timeout consecutively is not good solid strategy. I have said on a number of times that we were out coached in at least 4 or 5 games. I think Chow is a sharp cookie and calls a good game. He obviously thinks several plays in advance. It will be an interesting year to say the least.

  82. Stephen Tsai January 2, 2012 12:59 pm

    Whitey:

    Hawthorne was recruited by Miano.

He visited during the BYU weekend.

  83. Stephen Tsai January 2, 2012 1:00 pm

Not a done deal, but things are in the process.

  84. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 2, 2012 1:06 pm

JJ said he didn’t really care about the time of possession stat. Chow on the other hand puts that stat at the top.

    So excited. =)

  85. ai-eee-soos January 2, 2012 1:08 pm

    what – no hula girls?

” Philip Rauscher, UH’s newly hired assistant coach, arrived in Honolulu this afternoon and was greeted, with lei, by Gov. Neil Abercrombie and AD Jim Donovan. ”

    per ST’s header.

  86. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 2, 2012 1:08 pm

2 of the biggest hires are going to be the O-line and Defensive Coordinator. I really hope he grabs a great DC.

  87. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 2, 2012 1:09 pm

The Gov greeted him? Lol. Too funny.

  88. ai-eee-soos January 2, 2012 1:10 pm

ST: Thom Kaumeyer – is he hapa? – just curious – nuthin to do wit football.

  89. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 2, 2012 1:16 pm

Is Kaumeyer really the leading candidate for DC?

  90. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 2, 2012 1:17 pm

Will Chow be buying, renting, or living out of a hotel? These are the questions. 😛

  91. FattyMcButterpants January 2, 2012 1:18 pm

  99. RedZone January 2, 2012 1:34 pm

    Chang = Change

  100. LizKauai (macbook) January 2, 2012 1:36 pm

    100

  101. mikesmith January 2, 2012 1:48 pm

You guys in here keep talking about Colt and Timmy destroying the defenses of certain coaches, get a grip. Look at the total body of work of a coach, have you ever coached? Some games things don’t work out, Great coaches and Coord all over the nation get beat on offense, defense and special teams at times. It happens. Shoot if Les Miles, Tony Dungy, Bill Walsh or who evas, was named our HC, OC or DC many of you in here would say “Yeah but, Colt would kill his defense”.. Move on people.

  102. Stephen Tsai January 2, 2012 1:54 pm

    Fatty:

My question: How were they able to get front parking at the airport?

Most people can’t put their bags in the trunk without the airport traffic people hurrying you along.

Which brings me to my new favorite game. If I have to pick up somebody at Baggage H at the airport, I’ll park my car at, say, Baggage B. Then I’ll wait for the traffic person to walk up to my car. When he approaches, I drive up 50 feet, and stop. When he approaches again, I move up. And so forth. Hysterical.

  103. Derek January 2, 2012 1:55 pm

Oregon is proving that time of possession is overrated in da Rose Bowl. We’ll see in the second half. Too many big long plays. Here we go again! Yeah, the helmets are cool. Nothing but the best for Oregon who’s best alumni is Phil Knight, owner and chairman of Nike,Inc.

  104. Stephen Tsai January 2, 2012 1:56 pm

    103:

Well, if Hilo Hattie could make football helmets . . .

  105. Stephen Tsai January 2, 2012 1:58 pm

. . . And when they finally catch up, it’s fun to say: “Sorry, I didn’t hear you. Somebody kept blowing a whistle.”

  106. Kai Kane January 2, 2012 2:00 pm

Not real impressed by the first two hires, neither is established, and our current players need DISCIPLINE! Looks like we are trying to hire cheap, rather than good coaching. And heard from a birdie, Rauscher couldn’t last as a player at UCLA, hows he gonna last as a UH coach (WAY different here)…thoughts?

  107. RedZone January 2, 2012 2:03 pm

Colt Brennen? He had 326 yards passing and 5 TDs against Kaumeyer’s defense.

  108. obachan January 2, 2012 2:06 pm

sometimes bench players make the best coaches as they spent most of their time analyzing the games

  109. Stephen Tsai January 2, 2012 2:12 pm

I’m always fascinated when a person coaches a position he didn’t play.

For instance, Dave Duncan is one of baseball’s best pitching coaches. He was a catcher.

    Chow was an offensive lineman.

Kalani Sitake was a running back.

  110. RedZone January 2, 2012 2:15 pm

    Paul Johnson???

  111. Bugaz January 2, 2012 2:19 pm

Hire cheap coaches, that’s how we do! You act surprised. Gotta spend money to get that better product, but unfortunately that is the way UH and Hawaii works

  112. BigHiloFan2 January 2, 2012 2:23 pm

    Happy 2012 Tsaikos everywhere.

    Welcome Coaches, welcome.

  113. postmanke January 2, 2012 2:32 pm

I think Bobby Hauck – UNLV coach was a track guy. Go figure.

  114. Stephen Tsai January 2, 2012 2:34 pm

    Red Zone:

    Dick Tomey, too.

  115. whitey January 2, 2012 2:38 pm

st, at kahului airport they have a cell phone parking area approximately 200 yds from the terminal so you can wait till your passenger calls to say they are at curbside with their bags. don’t know if that is duffer’s idea, but he one sharp cookie.

  116. whitey January 2, 2012 2:39 pm

going get some exciting news on wednesday, so going wait till then. no sense anticipating when no one is saying anything.

  117. postmanke January 2, 2012 2:40 pm

Russell Wilson is a good example of why each College player should have a one time only “oops I may have made a mistake, I wanna transfer” ticket without penalty.

  118. Wassup January 2, 2012 2:42 pm

#114, ST – Speaking of Tomey, what’s his status? No mention of him being interviewed along with the remaining three coaches. Did I miss something?

  119. Derek January 2, 2012 2:49 pm

The assistants will make or break Chow’s success or failure. He knows he has to find good ones and trust their abilities, both as a coach/teacher and as recruiters. Sarkisian changed 3 defensive coaches because his defense couldn’t stop anybody, including UH. I thought he did what he had to do and he took action right away.

When Sarkisian hired Holt he said that he was the best DC in the country. Washington paid Holt more than Wash State paid their head coach. Now he fires him. You never know how things are going to work out no matter who is hired. I hope for the best.

  121. bigislandkurt January 2, 2012 2:56 pm

Russell Wilson is also a good example of an “undersized” QB succeeding. Bradduh is all of 5′ 10…including 2 inch exemption.

Coach Chow seems like the type of coach who when he says team meeting at 3:00, it means everyone in their seats by 2:50, with all cell phones off. Doors locked at 3:00.

  126. Old School Dave January 2, 2012 3:16 pm

Red Zone: Agree. Nick Holt was regarded as the second coming by Husky fans with his bald head, crazy and aggressive disposition, and high salary ($650K). Sometimes even with money can’t buy good coaching and things just don’t work out for some on the job.

Kona has so much vog. Wow!

I am thrilled to finally read some love for Norm Chow. Any word on Rolo? Okay like I asked the other day, who got the apartments for the new Coaches? Hope they are not stuck in a dorm room.

    Yes, touchdown Stanford!

  140. hossana January 2, 2012 3:58 pm

re:74 – Liz Kaui: well, put. I’m with you. Norm Chow is the head coach and he has all my support. All of this 2nd guessing on assistants is well-just that. Let NC be the head coach and we do our part in supporting him and the football team by, not criticizing or talking, but by purchasing tickets to the ball game.

I have been a supporter of UH football going back to ’65 when some of my classmates played for Jimmy Asato then I went to all of Dave Holmes games and was there in the Ewa end zone when Bobby Ahu ran back 3 or 2 punts for touchdowns ala Chad Holmes against BYU many yrs. ago and have been there through the grinding days of Price and Von Appen and no matter who the HC is, since ’75, I have been a season ticket holder in the South end zone loges…….that’s a heck of a long time and I will continue to support Rainbow or Warrior football…ha..ha..now which is it….Rainbow or Warrior….whatever…..Chow is the HC so the die is cast. Thank you LizKaui for your comments…well put…..

  141. PIAA DS January 2, 2012 3:59 pm

#88 Tom Kaumeyer is not Hapa. He was one of the first college coaches, along with Cal Lee, Rich Miano and Brian Cabral to attend the PIAA combine Darnell and I put on in 2001. He visited Hawaii often and always wanted to coach here. He’s a good guy, I think he would be very well liked. Easy going off the field.

  156. Not an Expert January 2, 2012 4:36 pm

I guessed Chow would be hired as head coach and that 1 to 3 of the coaches would be retained. Looks like the way its going maybe 1 hopefully 2.

Hiring 2 young administrative assistants is probably the salary plan of coach Chow. Need to use more of the money for OC & DC to get who he may want and need.

Thinking about it Chow will do the total opposite of what Mack did which I think is a good plan. If Mack had hired OC & DC who were more experienced and used the young coaches as understudies he would still be here. A good leader always surrounds oneself with capable and loyal people although loyalty is short lived in college sports.

They were using the old football pants (yes, they practiced in full pads) with the Rainbow stripes.

First words out of one of the coed’s mouth:

    “Hey, those pants look, ummm…cute.”

Governor supports UH athletics? Come on ST! He didn’t start really showing up at UH sporting events until the negative polls got REALLY bad! Yes, he did show up at an occasional event. But, you should have seen how fast he left! He couldn’t get out of there fast enough. Wait ’til a real issue shows up that needs his support… especially, if it is in conflict with his agenda.

I wonder why the Governor’s signature is not required?

    2) The airport has a governor’s lounge.

or UH fans are a large potential voting block.I noticed that he made an appearance at the sold out volleyball regional also.

This is a total guess but $350,000 sounds like it would put Hawaii amongst the highest paying for coordinators amongst mid-major programs.

What was the cap during this past year? $200,000?

  183. mikesmith January 2, 2012 6:00 pm

Just looked at the Hawaii Athletics website, clicked on the coaching staff link, poof….still get Mac and all the old coaches up on the site. Went to the UCLA site, and boom, Jim Mora bio and picture up already. Fresno state link, boom Tim DeRuyter up. Does anyone work in the Sports information dept at UH? Why wouldn’t they at least have Norm Chow up? I was hoping to gain some background info on the two new guys that arrived today. This is just another example of big time athletics dept and small time mentality. Get with it UH athletics, every body in the building has to buy into a culture change for it to happen. Look at the culture of excellence at Boise state. The entire dept has to support a big time vision or just suck it up and lower the expectations.

Eagle Air is a novice looking to be free to stroll all the exhibitions “Life is to learn not to get …”I like this sentence, very healthy outlook on life: You do not get a satisfactory cause; is learned How closer to happiness. You do not get the victory; is to learn how to avoid failure. You do not get the final result you want; that things will not be satisfactory to learn …

  188. slenzi January 2, 2012 6:24 pm

Thanks to all who called for “knock it off” on the second guessing of Coach Chow and his staff selections. Now if we can only get those “we gotta have a rainbow on the uni” folks to knock it off. But must say, Oregon helmets looked good. Rainbow trim on tapa “H”???

  189. mikesmith January 2, 2012 6:26 pm

Oregon has a full page spread “Rose Bowl Champions” that just happend 2 hours ago. Big time program. And people ask why would one of our local boys would pick Oregon, Utah or other mainland schools over staying home here at UH? One Answer is: UH facilities looks like Roosevelt high and Farrington, red dirt all over the buildings, portable class rooms all over campus. A parent sees that and then walks on the campus of Oregon, Utah, Boise, UCLA and sees first hand that the University cares about the details, they know their child will be surrounded by excellence. It is the same reason that top local athletes and their parents jump at the chance to play at Punahou (reduced for free aid) vs their home district public school, they equate Punahou with excellence. Hopefully Norm can change that small time mentality that does not pay attention to details that currently is in place at Hawaii. What do you think?

Thought the officials missed a hold on the LG on that big pass play. The RB was there behind to pick up the blitzer, but a penalty is a penalty—except when it’s not called. Disappointed—not sure it would have changed the outcome, but who knows …

  205. TYaiea January 2, 2012 7:21 pm

Two of the close ending games, Georgia and Stanford imho it was bad coaching. Georgia had the game and tried to run out the clock with 3plus mins instead of going for a first down. Stanford had enough time to go for the td but played to go for a f.g….with a freshman kicker who had already missed one earlier in the game. But all the games were exciting!!!

  206. Don Weir (We-Ah) January 2, 2012 7:21 pm

    MikeSmith

I agree. How hard is it to buy a PowerWasher from Lowe’s and shoot the red dirt from the buildings? Some of the portables have been there since I was at UH. Elevators from the ‘quarry’ are constantly “Under Repair”.

If UHAD doesn’t have a webmaster then there is trouble in paradise. Coach Chow’s name and the two new coaches should already be up with short bios. Clips from Coach Chow’s introductory news conference should be streamed. Is there any space for a weekly comment (s) from the Head Coach? Already there should be a plan to list signed recruits on the first day of Letter of Intent. I’d go on but I was just called to the dinner table.

  207. BigHiloFan2 January 2, 2012 7:30 pm

I totally agree with Mike Smith

#183, and the point is made in #189.

But the mediocre culture prevails everywhere. hoping Coach Chow will make suggestions to UHAD to change the mental culture everywhere in UHAD, change jobs for the publicity angle of football, because slow pokes are slowing us down. no doubt the staff of publicists mean us well, but they’re just not on it, so to speak, no sir.

but at least this much is true. now we got chance to get stuffs offn our chesseses. 😀

  208. mikesmith January 2, 2012 7:30 pm

Don, I hear you, we can all go on and on. Coach Chow seems to be a wise man, I think he will evaluate a lot of things and he can probably put together a list of things that need to change. Will the change happen? Let’s all hope so, it would be a shame to blame poor recruiting on the coaches only. I think it will take a complete shift in thinking by the entire athletic program. It is not only Coach Chows problem, it is a University problem.

  218. FattyMcButterpants January 2, 2012 7:48 pm

Wonder if someone “bribed” the Gov to show up, much the way he thinks we “bribe” the NFL to bring money into the state to host the Pro Bowl. Then again, his “De Plane, De Plane” impersonation must kill at airport pick ups.

  219. mikesmith January 2, 2012 7:54 pm

madeinhawaii hopefully UHAD learned from that mistake and will not allow it to get that far. They need to step up and make some sort of commitment other than salary. Example: Tulane stepped up and they will build an on campus stadium for their new coach and program. They announced it 2 days after they hired him. Cal 6 years ago promised Coach Tedford to invest in upgrades that will make them one of the older poorest facility in the Pac 12 to one of the best. take a look: 100 yard long weight room new http://twitpic.com/7wx5wy. And a new stadium on the way over 500 million spent. Tedford told Cal 3 years ago that if the facility was not built he would leave. Chow needs a bigger commitment from everyone. Everyone

  220. ai-eee-soos January 2, 2012 8:01 pm

Philip Rauscher – OC at Dixie State; found this on the Dixie State web

” Coach Brumfield went out and secured a disciple of legendary offensive guru Norm Chow to help the Red Storm offense, and hopefully qb Marinko, progress even more this season. He hired Phillip Rauscher as the o-coordinator. Rauscher spent three years at UCLA as a graduate assistant, and intern assistant on the Bruins football staff. Brumfield said Rauscher brings valuable insight and guidance to Dixie.

“Coach Chow talked unbelievably about Phil,” Brumfield said. “Chow has had some great graduate assistants through the years, from Lane Kiffin to Steve Sarkisian. And we put Phil up there with any of them.”

  221. mikesmith January 2, 2012 8:02 pm

We can’t just keep changing coaches and bringing in a new one every 4 years. And then put him in a situation with out the same tools that other coaches in the conference have: (facilities, equipment, coaching pay etc) If Coach Chow does not do well, 4 years from now a new coach will come in and he will have the same locker room, stadium, wt room, ect. that Wagner, Vonoppen, Jones and Chow had. That is like hiring a new pilot to fly a 50 year old jet and tell him, “I know this jet couldn’t make it from Hawaii to Vegas these last 4 years but with your experience we believe you can fly this same Jet to New York in your first flight, here are the keys, good luck”

New coach, new unis? Hope so. Thought they took a step back with the last batch. In particular, my heart sank when I saw them come out at the BYU game. Almost as much as seeing the silver uniforms at the Sugar Bowl. Goal 1: Get your greens straight. They say the Thais have over 200 words for the color green. They could probably name about 50 used for the UH football program over the years.

  224. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 2, 2012 8:17 pm

    mikesmith,

while we are no Oregon, the locker rooms, facilities, $$$ for recruiting, and general institutional support has increased tremendously since the JJ drama.

It’s almost impossible to keep up with the Jones’ if you compare us to any BCS school. Just not possible at the moment with the kind of external funding they get.

I’ll try and look for the article on PAC12 facility improvements that stated that as soon as a school has its state of the art, big $$$, fancy shmancy facilities ready for use, it is already a step behind the plans of the BCS school next to it. It’s a battle that can never be won.

We have a lot further to go off course, but we are in a MUCH better place than just a few years ago.

  225. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 2, 2012 8:30 pm

Looking at the 2010 list of coach salaries makes me think that IF we were willing to spend $350,000 we could lure a big time DC.

Many BCS schools are spending $250,000-$400,000 for their OC/DC.

  226. mikesmith January 2, 2012 8:35 pm

    224. I agree, a lot better than before but are we comparable or close to our WAC/MWC counterparts? I hope the UHAD can get Chow up to speed with them. We can’t give him knives to take to the gun fight.

  227. madeinhawaii January 2, 2012 8:38 pm

    mikesmith:

Problem is… Norm Chow is already 65… in 5 years he will be 70… if he’s frustrated, he’ll simply retire… and the cycle continues…

  228. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 2, 2012 8:39 pm

    mikesmith,

Not 100% for sure. Definitely behind Boise and its new plans maybe Fresno too. Maybe this is something Garret knows.

I want to say that currently our facilities are on par with the WAC. Most of them have even less money and fan support than Hawaii.

    Just a guess though.

  229. mikesmith January 2, 2012 8:42 pm

While I am thinking about improvements, does anyone have good ideas about increasing student attendance at the games and or overall student support in general? My friend’s son was recruited by 5 Pac 10 schools, UH did not recruit him, he played TE. On his recruiting trips he mentioned how the college atmosphere is a “real” college atmosphere because of the student involvement. When his son got to Oregon to watch a game as a recruit, Autzen stadium was packed with students inside and out and the students were so savvy that they carried signs in the stands with the names of the all recruits in attendance. “John Doe, we can’t wait until you are a Duck, pick us!” That means a lot to a 17 year old kid. Our student involvement is next to nothing. It would not work to have our senior citizens that attend our games holding signs. LOL

  230. mikesmith January 2, 2012 8:45 pm

    228. Lots of things to fix, I agree, Coach Chow’s age might be more appealing to our attendance demographic. And if he gets frustrated here we go again, hand the keys to the 50 year old jet to the next guy….Good luck.

  234. JKJones January 2, 2012 8:53 pm

You can bet Powell and Rauscher are not entitlement-bred loafers who will be moonlighting to secure financial security in paradise or enjoying the beach 24/7. They were hired for their energy and internal motivation to succeed as college coaches. Yeah, Norm Chow doesnt like to recruit but that doesnt mean he doesnt know HOW to recruit or dispatch his staff on around-the-clock recruiting missions.

Look for differences in approach and demeanor. It’s a contrast in connecting with recruits rather than distancing. Look for salesmanship and not indifference.

Presentation and courtship are as vital to recruiting as anything now-a-days and a coach that communicates with an android or Samsung Galaxy SII is kool-dude stuff. I suspect Powel and Rauscher have social high-tech attributes linked to this generation. Chow is no dummy, he is a closer. The foot-pounding and grunt work will be done by coaches who can handle the asymetrical culture these ballers represent.

The on the field stuff may offer a challenge. Rausher has some time in the game. Powell

is strictly de novo and Chow must see a gem-in-the-rough.

Whatever the scenario, rest assured these two do not have union based no-cut clauses once hired. This is business for NC and like anything else he has learned from that world of operations, you produce or move on.

  235. mikesmith January 2, 2012 8:55 pm

    I wonder

Thanks for the links, just checked them out. Man we are behind, things look cleaner and more organized at all of those schools. UHAD has a lot of work to do. Or just lower the expectations. Can’t claim to be big time if mainland high schools are nicer than what the Warriors have.

  236. mikesmith January 2, 2012 8:59 pm

JKJones, agree, I’m sure these guys will work their tails off. But in the end, what are you selling? Red dirt and portables? When you put lipstick on a pig, it is still a pig. Kids also want the “Cool” stuff, not just a “Cool” coach “baller” with an android phone. The kids want to think they are “ballers” and when they see something at another school that provides that feeling, they are outta here.

nothing wrong with red dirt. all plantation kids were raised in red dirt and all the moms used clorox to get them clean. not to mention the use of mrs stewart blueing and starch.

  239. whitey January 2, 2012 9:07 pm

got to admit the tree vs cowboys was a very good game. this is how bowl games should be.

Abercrombie is on record as supporting UH athletics. He said so during his campaign.

yet, Gov NA has plans for the aloha stadium site. He is courting China investment $$ for site development. Naturally, this will be attached to some public purpose benefit.

Abercrombie has also proposed Kapolei to replace the Aloha Stadium venue. Of course, the facility size will hold less than Bronco stadium. That should kill Hawaii football, unless everyone moves close to Mufi’s train route.

Still, kudos to Neil, he never misses a photo op. Whether hosting Norm Chow’s roll-out as the new Warrior HC or greeting two low-level position coaches at the airport.

The Gov has been tagged as the most unpopular Governor in the US.

Proof that a politician’s word carries more weight than his latest photo ops.

  242. Bugaz January 2, 2012 9:20 pm

Mikesmith you wouldn’t happen to have a couple $millions to donate to the program to get away from putting lip stick on the pig? I wish the Warriors had that kind of support! We would be a power house team year in and year out garranz!!! But gotta play the hand that’s dealt cause I no more dat kine kala or I would donate.

  243. bigislandkurt January 2, 2012 9:23 pm

I know this subject has been batted around on more than a few occasions. But is an on-campus stadium too much to ask for? To put a political spin on it, it would create jobs! 🙂

Nothing too big. Maybe in the range of 35k seats.

    BIK

  244. Bugaz January 2, 2012 9:26 pm

I would love to see the completion of the Ching Athletic Complex facility. That alone would get some quality recruits to think twice.

  245. mikesmith January 2, 2012 9:28 pm

Bugaz, I feel you, If I had it and was a billionaire like the Boone Pickens guy at Oklahoma State we would build a new football facility and stadium. That guys should get the credit for that Fiesta Bowl win today.

  246. mikesmith January 2, 2012 9:31 pm

    Bigislandkurt, check this out

    http://photos.nola.com/tpphotos/2011/12/new_tulane_football_stadium_pl_1.html

On campus stadium at Tulane for 60 million dollars for 30,000 seats. Here it would cost us 500 million for 15,000 seats LOL

  247. Bugaz January 2, 2012 9:35 pm

I think there’s enough room for the stadium, but parking, traffic, and money is to big an issue. I wish it were not

  248. Bugaz January 2, 2012 9:37 pm

They paid the kicker to miss the field goal! Kidding of course

  249. JKJones January 2, 2012 9:48 pm

    @236.

dont lose focus. recruits want to make the nfl draft, not watch plasma TV for 5-years in a hedonistic athletic vacuum….

Your lipstick example does not apply.

    Real coaches come first.

    Good coaches produce winners.

    Winning needs no lipstick.

    It is genuine gold.

That is the Boise State model.

Once you produce a winner, everyone wants to contribute.

Then, you build your facilities to keep it going.

Of course in Hawaii, the powers-to-be want to run business with govt and union mindsets rather than allowing free enterprise to dictate competence. That, IMHO, is far more debilitating than a lipstick makeover.

  250. Bugaz January 2, 2012 9:50 pm

Me personally, if I had hit the Jack Pot $10M, I keep $1M and donate $9M to the UHAD. I am a simple man just paying my bills. Would love to see the Warriors hit the BIG time!

  251. mikesmith January 2, 2012 9:59 pm

249, I hear you, but we have to attract good to great athletic talent, then coach them to win. or we won’t ever build facilities at all. If UH cannot attract good and great athletic talent and all the other schools in our conference does, All things being equal (they have good coaches too) then we will win some, but lose more than others. The NFL draft cannot be the only attraction, they can get that at many other schools, in fact other schools have more players in the NFL than Hawaii. Kids don’t play their lives like the stock market, they don’t look at long term projections. Our kids now are microwave kids, they want things now, not later.

  252. al January 2, 2012 9:59 pm

    i don’t get it…?

college football is obviously big business. we are in the second tier of the big bucks, yet, we do all right. just well enough to make ends meet and enough to allow the university to fashion a few other non-revenue sports. we also are able to satisfy many of the important female sports enough to create gender equity.

yet, many feel that a stadium less than 50k is where we should be at. 30-35k some say in fact. if such were our capacity we’d be relegated to the next tier down in the fcs divisions. we’d no longer be in the mwc and not even the wac. we’d have to play many weather vane institutions and guess what? attendance would plummet even further with such competition. as a matter of fact we’d probably not be able to have any home games at all. then before your very own eyes we’d not have football at all.

a change was the obvious thing, less we fall deeper in to the depths of oblivion. our new man, norman chow, has the vision, drive, and determined goal to achieve. he wants us to get to that next level. we were so close with jj. had we been able to capitalize of sugar bowl season with continued impetus…who knows how far we’d have gotten.

it going to take some time. but, i truly believe that the product on saturdays will be so much more improved as soon as this year.

all we gotta do is show up and cheer.

…after all these are exciting times.

  253. Bugaz January 2, 2012 9:59 pm

Of course cannot tell the wife about the $9M she would freak!!’ how many purses could that buy?

  254. al January 2, 2012 10:00 pm

    whitey…hahahaha.

  255. Bugaz January 2, 2012 10:10 pm

If Coach Chow were to get us to the Big Time and up the facilities to Big Time too, I would personally drive him for free on recruiting trips around the island. I actually would do that now and be a little birdie lol

85 Shouldn’t the mini-Gov be tending to more urgent manners rather than playing lei greeter to some assistant coach?

And if he didn’t greet or meet the new coaches some would criticize him for thinking football is not important.

My point is we need to get off the petty BS and support. Even if he didn’t think it was important before, apparently he thinks it is now. Isn’t that a good thing? If there is overwhelming support for the team, higher ups and Pols will have to change and follow US!

  257. mikesmith January 2, 2012 10:21 pm

    256. We support, lets see if the Gov puts the money where his mouth is. Oh yeah, he won’t be in office after this term, one and done. As for the gesture of supporting football, great, awesome, still won’t vote for him. You are right, fill the stadium, even if we lose, that is real big time support. Will the Hawaii fans do that? will they get 45,000 minimum to every game. I am in. Bought my season tickets, Lets roll.

  258. AlaWai January 2, 2012 10:23 pm

The difference with UH and the Big Time is that our alumni would volunteer the coach around to recruit. At a Big Time school an alumnus would gift a limousine to the school for recruiting. Until we find a Phil Knight or T.Boone Pickens, we’ll be driving a long time.

  259. mikesmith January 2, 2012 10:25 pm

    AlaWai,

    Yup

  260. AlaWai January 2, 2012 10:30 pm

  263. spamworld January 2, 2012 10:47 pm

And i get really tired about hearing Hawaii promotes mediocrity, while there may be many causes, IMO the main cause is US.

We keep quiet and be lazy cause its easier to blame someone else if something goes wrong. If you don’t like how things are, look in the mirror because the reason is US! We LET things get this way. It’s not the politicians or the unions or the newest immigrant group to come here. It’s all of us.

Hence the lazy catch phrases that are seen and heard all the time…”someone ought to”, “they should”, “why can’t they”.

Im sure many saw the movie “Lean on Me”

Morgan Freemans speech in the cafeteria is particularly inspiring to me.

“If you do not succeed in life, I don’t want you to blame your parents!”

“I don’t want you to blame the white man!”

“I want you to blame YOURSELF!”

    “The responsibility is YOURS!”

Instead we should be saying “I will”, “I can”.

This is the kind of thinking this country was built on.

  264. AlaWai January 2, 2012 10:47 pm

The POTUS who left today is a sports fan. You’d think he and his friends could support the Warriors.

  265. madeinhawaii January 2, 2012 10:47 pm

Who said Chow doesn’t like to recruit?

  266. mikesmith January 2, 2012 10:48 pm

Al, yeah steve case, him too, but the Ebay guy is Pierre Morad Omidyar, Lives in Hawaii, Wife is either punahou grad or Iolani. Pierre worth = over 4.45 Billion alone in EBay shares. pluse the Omidyar network worth Billions more.

  267. mikesmith January 2, 2012 10:51 pm

Peace out guys, fun convo, Coach Chow will work his tail off, support him folks!

  268. AlaWai January 2, 2012 10:57 pm

The support base of “I will” and “I can” exists in Hawai`i. It’s the little people that support the Warriors. I do, season tickets, donations, etc. but sorry I’m not in the league of the affluent. We have many transplanted celebrities who have homes in Hawai`i, but as a whole they are not supporting UH athletics. Except for the Ching Foundation, very few foundations exist in Hawai`i that are mega-sized and make large donations to the school. The truth is very few on Oahu “bleed green”.

  269. Joaquin Gambrill January 2, 2012 11:05 pm

I’m somebody who has labored using a lot of different movers and moving companies in the earlier. I can actually say that searching for the right moving company to retain the services of is really vital because doing this will assist you to help save loads of time and expense.

  270. AlaWai January 2, 2012 11:09 pm

IMHO the mega donor for UH athletics should be Las Vegas. Hawai`i pours millions if not billions of dollars into the Nevada economy supporting UON and UNLV. It’s time they return the favor or the Governor should legalize gambling in Hawai`i. Quid pro quo.

  271. GondaOhana January 2, 2012 11:12 pm

    madeinhawaii

@#227- totally agree, and hoping he has a retirement plan (aka- mentor HC) heʻs including in the mix…

  272. madeinhawaii January 2, 2012 11:19 pm

The only thing I heard Coach Chow say regarding recruiting was that as the head coach he would not be allowed to make visits to a potential recruit’s home. I understood that to mean that he cannot/should not do anything that might be construed as a form of favoritism to any one recruit… In other words, if he visits one potential recruit’s home, he would have to visit them all.

  273. bigislandkurt January 2, 2012 11:20 pm

Hawaii has some very very wealthy people. It’s just that in Hawaii, everybody tend to take a much lower key approach. They say Dr. Earl Bakken in Kohala…the owner of the pacemaker patent makes 18 mil per day. If he gives us one week’s worth of earnings, we might be able to make some strides on this new stadium. 🙂

It doesn’t hurt to dream. One day before I leave this planet, I hope we see a new stadium for the warriors. ON campus preferably.

    BIK

  274. GondaOhana January 2, 2012 11:30 pm

and honestly UH fans- our players aint looking for fireworks, pampering and “bling”… really they arenʻt- They want to play for a ligit D1! They arent asking for it to be easy, they want to work, and they got the passion to back it. So SUPPORT them! and be confident that Coach Chow will bring it all together, and bring out the best in our current and future UH PLAYERS! AND THAT will sell tickets and fill the Aloha Stadium..

i gotta feeling, (woohoo) that itʻs gonna be a good season…

  275. al January 2, 2012 11:36 pm

mih…what chow meant was that the dead period of recruiting was upon us and therefore, he was not able to make any home visits or visits at all until the dead period ended.

  276. madeinhawaii January 2, 2012 11:38 pm

    al,

is that what he meant? heh.. so I heard it wrong too… I could have sworn I heard him say…

“As head coach I’m not allowed to go into a recruit’s home”

  277. al January 2, 2012 11:53 pm

yah, he could not go into the home during the dead period. he’ll be on the mainland recruiting through this weekend. he’ll be in some homes then.

he’s also tying up the rest of his staff.

then he’ll hit the local trail and homes. on campus visits are scheduled for the second weekend.

  278. RedZone January 3, 2012 12:14 am

  280. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 3, 2012 12:40 am

Lots of rich folk in Hawaii without a doubt. Thing is, if you want their money for UH athletics figure out or make a link to the program.

We could have billionaires living here, but if they went to Stanford or Berkeley or USC, well…

we gotta change the culture. Starts at the top.

    Nuff said.

    whitey – san,

Gotta admit, there were some good games yesterday. And yeah, Hawaii could use a guy like T. Boone Pickens. He shoulda been there to pick up the trophy with the Cowboys. That win wouldn’t have been possible without him.

Aloha and Happy 2012 Tsaikos! Now that we have a great new coach for football, let’s work on bringing back the “gameday experience” to Aloha stadium next season. This has been on my mind for awhile now. I kept that list of people to contact at the stadium authority that Wdoc posted a few weeks ago. We should get a letter going that we can all individually send out. Thoughts?

    More on Kaumeyer:

“Prior to Tulane Kaumeyer spent five seasons at San Diego State where he served as defensive coordinator (2002-05) and defensive backs coach (2006). During his tenure at San Diego State, Kaumeyer developed the defense into one of the best in the Mountain West Conference. In 2003 the Aztecs had the biggest defensive improvement in the country, moving from 95th in total defense in 2002 to eighth in 2003, from 91st in pass defense to fourth, and from 92nd in scoring defense to 13th. Five San Diego State players were drafted from 2004-06 including Jaguars linebacker Kirk Morrison, a two-time MWC Defensive Player of the Year.”

Sounds like Kaumeyer would be a great hire. Has experience building, also heard his players praise him and respect him.

Warrior Beat must be in its dead period.

ST, any news of Warriors’ football? Any news OK. Even about the experiences of the new coaches that are here. Even if they haven’t spent 24 hours here yet.

Just a fast hello and also to thank you for discussing your ideas on this page. I wound up inside your weblog right after researching physical fitness connected issues on Yahoo… guess I lost track of what I had been performing! Anyway I’ll be back as soon as again inside the potential to test out your blogposts down the road. Thanks!

    Just WIN, Warriors.

  319. Bugaz January 3, 2012 8:32 am

Waking up to news of hired coaches would have been fantastic, especially since today is the last day of dead period. Hope coaching the bowl game and honoring his commitment does hurt the program. Gots to have faith!!!

  322. tommui January 3, 2012 8:38 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Spamworld #256 makes a good point: ” Even if he (the Governor) didn’t think it was important before, apparently he thinks it is now. Isn’t that a good thing?”

Perhaps we should get off our judgmental mode and realize that whether or not he has spare $$, let alone the power to shake the legislature for money, the governor does show up at games to show his support. Whether he leaves early or not, whether he is there mining for votes, to my mind is totally immaterial because people might think that the fact he was there, shows support for UH athletics.

Other than Jack Burns and Ben Cayetano, I don’t recall any other governor giving at least token support to the UH athletics even to the point of showing up to talk story with the AD.

Like the governor or not, at least he shows face.9

  323. mikesmith January 3, 2012 8:39 am

ST any idea who is left in the UH football office? Bianca? Lumpkin? Rolo? Tony? Just wondering who is getting the new coaches acclimated.

  324. Ipu Man January 3, 2012 8:42 am

Lingle’s little ad up in the corner should say:

“vote for me and I will build a new UH stadium

    in Manoa!”

  325. mikesmith January 3, 2012 8:43 am

Speaking of Bianca, I hope Norm Chow hires a “real” football ops person like every other D1 program in the nation. (usually a former coach or person with a degree in athletic administration) As I recall, JJ hired her from Panda travel with no football experience and or knowledge because he wanted her to book travel arrangements. So our football ops has been run by a travel agent. She seems like a very nice person but lets hope the program is run like all the successful models out there.

  326. madeinhawaii January 3, 2012 8:51 am

    mikesmith…

If Bianca’s been there that long, there’s a good chance she already knows all the ins and outs better than any new outsider would. AND works for less.

  327. Wassup January 3, 2012 8:56 am

Occupy Aloha Stadium until they build a new one. Start the movement now.

On the side- seriously, if the Guv wants to show support for the program, do it right. Gotta spend money to make money. I’m sure the current stadium has paid for itself many times over through the years. The longer we wait, the more expensive it will get.

  328. obachan January 3, 2012 9:01 am

are the new hires that tall or is the gov that short?

  329. mikesmith January 3, 2012 9:01 am

    MIH.

I hear you, but most HCs hire a person for FB ops that can also help with other things, coaching camps, viewing prospect film, stuff like that. That way they get an extra “football” person in the department. And they have their own secretary titled “Executive administrative assistant to the Head Coach” that handles the admin stuff, two separate positions. Again, I’m just saying, Norm has been around the high end successful business model, just wondering what he will do.

  330. madeinhawaii January 3, 2012 9:01 am

    Ipu Man…

You mean like putting in a few more bleachers at Ching and giving us more snow jobs, eh?

  331. mikesmith January 3, 2012 9:05 am

    327.

Everyone knows that the stadium is old and antiquated and archaic. Shoot the NFL told the stadium authority, shape up, modernize, do something please, it is 2012, or we are outta here. A study was done on the stadium and the cost analysis showed all the issues that need to be addressed. So the stadium authority changes some orange seats, wow. But lets face it, we can’t even fix pot holes in Hawaii.

  332. ai-eee-soos January 3, 2012 9:06 am

    new post up.

  333. AlaWai January 3, 2012 9:18 am

Bianca’s responsibilities are all of the pre-game, game and post-game arrangements to insure that no obstacles and distractions occur. She knows the ins and outs of the team, the community, the league and the cities UH travels. I’ve worked with NFL offices who arrange these details and they have staffs of peeps. Given what Bianca accomplishes, she is hire #1 to insure a smooth transition so the coaches and players can focus on their jobs.

    132. Ipu Man: YES!

To JD: What’s with all the different shades of green on the unis? Standardize the shade, after all, the school’s colors are GREEN & WHITE! Look at Penn St. it appears they couldn’t make up their minds on the shade of blue so they just used a simple stripe on the helmets and the rest of the unis are all WHITE!

It’s wrong for the director/p-roducer to cut to him like that. They obviously have monitors in the control room and can see he’s taking a fiesta. And for the the anchors to carry on mocking the poor guy for at least 5 minutes is really unprofessi-onal and childish.diablo3 gold
