Rehearsal

The Rainbow Warriors will make the most important 10-minute trip of training camp when they go through today’s dress rehearsal at Aloha Stadium.

They have timed their arrival from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam to coincide with their game-day arrival at Aloha Stadium for the Aug. 29 opener against USC.

The run-through will include locker assignments, where to align during warmups, introductory walks and a scrimmage set to start at 5 p.m. — the same time as the opener’s kickoff. With some luck, it will mirror the conditions, such as sun direction.

It also will give the Warriors a chance to work on their in-game communication. Chris Wiesehan, Jordan Wynn, Luke Matthews and Ed Ta‘amu are expected to be in the coaches’ booth assisting the offense.

It does not appear that there will be any big-check ceremonies or win-a-trip-to-Vegas kicking contests, though.

* * * * *

The Warriors have been experimenting with different things in this phase of camp. We’ll refrain from posting any secrets. Well, at least until USC’s check clears. (That’s a joke. Don’t want the media relations folks to have another anxiety attack.)

* * * * *

In a double switch, freshman receiver Marcus Kemp is now wearing No. 14. (Quarterback Adonis Phillips relinquished the number and now is wearing No. 13.)

That would have been significant a couple of years ago because No. 14 and No. 15 were purposely put on reserve. While that honored two past quarterbacks, taking the numbers out of circulation only tabled any movement to officially retire 14 and 15. Now with all numbers except No. 32 in play, it puts the athletic department in the position to decide whether to retire football numbers. There are numbers worthy of being retired. One suggestion is to symbolically retire ’07.

It’s UH’s move now.

Jake Ingram and Tai Papalii are joining the Warriors as student managers. Papalii played briefly for the Warriors before attending Foothill College.

  11. PurpleMaple August 16, 2013 7:37 am

Are they going to “Walk” unto the field to start the season? I am just hoping that Coach Chow loosens up and just pumps up the blood by having the players “Run” out unto the field.

    I like the music!

    It shows confidence.All business like.

  18. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2013 7:45 am

I don’t think timeouts were a problem with this staff.

  19. MattyBoy August 16, 2013 7:47 am

Yeah I hope they don’t do that arm-in-arm walk out thingy. That was so corny. It doesn’t match the team. Hope Chow just let’s them run out like crazy to pumped!

  20. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2013 7:48 am

One consideration is Chow will allow several scout players on the field during games. There were a couple of redshirt players, such as Hunter Thomson, who were allowed to wear uniforms during some home games last year.

  21. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2013 7:49 am

The captains’ council gets a big say in how the team will enter the field and when, or if, they will perform the haka.

  22. tom-warriornation August 16, 2013 7:52 am

8 tickets left–9 to 19 rows behind our Warrior bench; so close you can feel their energy–hurry! Sit with the families of Tyler Hadden, Brenden Daley & former players.

50 yard sideline seats: UNLV Oct. 12 road game

    $55 each

also $30 for great endzone seats

UH ticket office price is $60 (for near endzone seats most likely)

…Sit safely with 200+ other diehard Hawaii fans all wearing GREEN!

    email me: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com

  23. Warrior Dave August 16, 2013 7:55 am

It’s my understanding that Chow said names on back of jerseys and no more linked arms to enter.

Also glad that he may allow scout team members to dress and be on field. I think it builds unity and is important to the players and their families.

Lastly, sad to think #14 & #15 will not be retired. Timmy and Colt did so much for the program.

  24. Warrior Dave August 16, 2013 7:57 am

The Haka doesn’t have the same effect it once had for me. But if the players want it, so be it.

  25. Pomai August 16, 2013 7:59 am

All 105 or so should dress and be on the field, if done right it would not be that hard to do.. Also it would look awesome!!!!!!

  26. d1shima August 16, 2013 8:01 am

    No walk-throughs….Run-through!

  27. d1shima August 16, 2013 8:02 am

Have a terrific Official Statehood Day!

  28. Pomai August 16, 2013 8:04 am

IMHO they should be doing the Ha’a not the Haka, there is a difference it’s called “HAWAIIAN”…..

  29. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2013 8:04 am

Didn’t Hawaii become a state on Aug. 21?

    Is today Aug. 21?

  30. d1shima August 16, 2013 8:11 am

Yes, but apparently no one sent out the memo that it is officially observed on the 3rd Friday of August.

Public worker union folks excepted from the above of course…

  31. Old Diver August 16, 2013 8:11 am

Pomai, I agree. Something is wrong when the home team dresses less players than the visiting team and the players in the stands outnumber the students in the stands.

  32. d1shima August 16, 2013 8:12 am

    A: (to Q2) No.

    (A) Q: (for you) Why are the breaks for SVP & Russillo so long?

  33. el burro sabio August 16, 2013 8:15 am

14, 15, and 54 should be issued to players who can honor the number.

  34. d1shima August 16, 2013 8:16 am

Haven’t actually seen the pre-game Ha’a/Haka since the last time they appeared in the Hawaii Bowl…never in the stadium until right before kickoff.

So, personally, I can take it or leave it. But frankly, at this point, would it seem to some observers that Hawaii is merely copying high school teams…some as far away as Texas?!?!

  35. Pomai August 16, 2013 8:19 am

The thing is if the Ha’a is done it should be done for the players benefit not anyone else’s.

  36. Ipu Man August 16, 2013 8:20 am

Did they ever decide on a UH mascot yet? USC will probably have theirs in town.

  37. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2013 8:22 am

The haka is really impressive up close. The problem is there are always so many people blocking the view. It reminds me of a choir teacher. We’re like: Move outta the way. I can’t see my kid lip sync.

  38. Ipu Man August 16, 2013 8:26 am

Maybe they should hold a “mascot” contest where fans (ie. students…) come to the games in costumes with a halftime parade of them. I bet the students’ creativity would know no bounds…

  39. Kukui High School August 16, 2013 8:29 am

d1: Itʻs the teams in Texas that are copying Hawaii. Kahuku was the first to do the haka and then UH followed. Even BYU did the haka, but it was nothing compared to what we do here.

IMHO, doesʻt really matter what we do before the game if at the end of it weʻre feeling disgusted.

  40. Last Call August 16, 2013 8:30 am

After meeting with his top adviser, the same 12 year old boy who helped him with the Rainbow flip flop, Ben Jay has decided on a pink unicorn for our new mascot .

  41. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2013 8:35 am

I think the intent was to have a mascot contest at one point.

Not sure what happened to that idea, although it seemed like a good one.

It would have been interesting if such a contest were held and Vili entered.

  42. d1shima August 16, 2013 8:36 am

    No Get Nutz,

Yes, I am familiar with the roll-out as well but my comment was that it’s getting to the point where UH seems to be “competing” with so many teams that kids coming into HS now might not know who is copying who…

  43. d1shima August 16, 2013 8:38 am

Mascots are not a deal-breaker for me either but I just hope the next one will encourage singing along with the band when it plays Co-ed…not trying to drown it out by leading cheering contests in the EZ. 👿

  44. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2013 8:38 am

I’m not sure about all of the legalities of intellectual property, copyrights, or even budgets, but I thought Vili was the best mascot UH ever had.

He had the look, and the stamina. The pushups, the drum-pounding, the chee-hoos to the crowd.

  45. d1shima August 16, 2013 8:39 am

Did I mention that the breaks during SVP & Russillo seem really long?

  46. d1shima August 16, 2013 8:41 am

Who controls the “intellectual” property rights for Marshmallow Head?

  47. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2013 8:42 am

For games in the Kibbie Dome, the media booth is not encased, so you can hear the crowd directly. It’s amazing to see the fans — young, old and very old — standing and singing along to the fight song. And this is for Idaho football.

Maybe the Jamie Smith approach is correct. Marketing begins in the stands. Sometimes, you have to just wade into the crowd.

  48. d1shima August 16, 2013 8:42 am

    …really l-o-n—-g

  49. koakane ® August 16, 2013 8:43 am

  50. d1shima August 16, 2013 8:43 am

    Tsaikos and crowd-surfing.

    Recipe for disaster

    …and WC claims.

  51. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2013 8:44 am

    d1:

We all mocked the Mashmallow Head because it was so ridiculously funny. Trouble is, nobody thought to archive it for history. It’s impossible to find an official UH picture of that mascot.

That’s why, kiddies, hang on to those One Direction lunch boxes.

  52. d1shima August 16, 2013 8:44 am

“this is actually a dude, huh?”

    😆 Bad Music Friday

  53. boolakanaka August 16, 2013 8:45 am

ST–is it true that Ben Jay is in serious negotiations with Prince Hanalei to be the team’s mascot and in a victory for economic efficiency, also the team’s color and fashion coordinator???

  54. Old School Dave August 16, 2013 8:45 am

Speaking of Vili the Warrior, here’s an article about his son, VJ who starts for Utah. The article mentions his father training him when he was younger.

    http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/utes/56734735-89/fehoko-football-season-linebacker.html.csp

  55. d1shima August 16, 2013 8:47 am

Marshmallow Head was clearly in its right era…before camera phones!

    ….Special Head OTOH

  56. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2013 8:48 am

The concept of walking, arms linked, to the sideline was unique.

So, too, was JJ’s idea of using the Cheers’ video that led into the “We Will Rock You” chant.

Trouble is the on-field announcers keep talking and the fans get distracted from what UH is trying to portray.

  57. d1shima August 16, 2013 8:49 am

Eh, no be junkin’ on BillyV. 😉

  58. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2013 8:50 am

The Glades was ahead of its time.

  59. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2013 8:51 am

    d1:

    It’s the other pre-game announcer. They’re having shout-offs.

It’s like Dickman and Curran yelling out answers at the trivia contest.

(Notice the cross-promotion for next Friday’s contest at Dave & Busters? That’s marketing. It’s all about wading.)

  60. d1shima August 16, 2013 8:51 am

So what else is the team doing at JBPHH today?

If they want to truly simulate game day conditions for 8/29 shouldn’t someone be leaf-blowing the tailgate area by now?

  61. d1shima August 16, 2013 8:52 am

Cabby74…My across the street neighbors, and I’ll give a hint, he was an all-state d-line guy in the early 80s, his pops was a Lt., HPD, and well, back in the day, we would take his police cruiser and go out weekends and try and pullover girls…..damn, now what are the specific reasons we were never arrested, and I should check the statue of limitations on some of the stuff I say???

  76. cocobean August 16, 2013 9:31 am

When does attention to detail becomes micro management? Sometimes I get the impression Coach can’t see the forest for the trees. Wish he would delegate more of the trival decisions to his staff. Head coaches should delegate and evaluate. Not spend time figuring out the best way to de-bus in an organized manner, let the grad assistants handle things like that.

  77. Derek August 16, 2013 9:41 am

Nice to learn that Samson Anguay is now healthy. I hope he can contribute and help the team. Watched Punahou and Mililani last night. Punahou has at least 5 Division I players. Mililani has a nice field turf, a nice new Unis, and nice new helmet design. P.S. former QB Jarin Morikawa is now a walk on QB at UNLV. He spurned scholarship offers from Weber St. and Illinois St. We might see him play when UH plays the Rebels on Oct. 12.

  78. NYUHTX August 16, 2013 9:42 am

Warriors don’t only fight for themselves; they fight for a group. The Haka was not an initiation rite; it was a method of warfare – both physically and symbolically. So I respectfully disagree with Pomai’s 35 post that the Ha’a should be “done for the players benefit not anyone else’s”. Granted I know less about Ha’a than the Haka.

  79. Manoa Mist August 16, 2013 9:54 am

Man I remember Prince Hanalei from high school. One of the boys said one of the boys looked like him, and that ended up being fighting words between the two of ’em…lol. Those were the days, Club Hubba Hubba and The Glades.

  80. Old School Dave August 16, 2013 9:54 am

Nice fields at Mililani and Castle. Good for them.

On the other hand, just wondering when the DOE is going to fix the roof at Farrington’s auditorium? Also, provide ACs for classrooms at Campbell and Waianae High.

  81. Derek August 16, 2013 9:55 am

Kolten Wong is in the Cardinals lineup at 2B. He’s batting sixth behind Carlos Beltran. Game now in the first inning.

80–MM, darn it, I forgot all about the old hubba hubba….once saw this sailor, probably on a weekend pass or something, anyway he got too mouthy with this one fafafini named Tuffy, well Tuffy could have been a recipient of DI football scholarship on physique alone, was wearing a pareo tied across his chest (in order to make a clevage–I don’t know and please don’t ask me)anyway, it was a two-hit incident….Tuffy hit the Navy guy on leave, and he hit the pavement, hard….we were all still in HS, and sitting on the hood of my friend’s car, and collectively everyone was like….” dammmmmmn”

  90. Slugger August 16, 2013 10:28 am

    Morning, gang!

I agree with d1shima (#43)…a mascot who leads cheers when we are on offense, when everyone should be singing the alma mater or Fight Song, who does not look like a fit Warrior, should not be our mascot. Go find a student who portrays Na Koa. Give a kid a job!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  91. al August 16, 2013 10:30 am

    rip prince Hanalei.

manoa mist…and i’ll bet the prince beat the crap out of him, too. seen him duke it out and the braddah could go.

he was actually a very nice person.

  92. primo123 August 16, 2013 10:32 am

on RETRO day, bring back the Marshmellow Mascot back…..that’ll fire up the crowd….plus most current students, dont even remember him.

  93. al August 16, 2013 10:34 am

yeah, vili was quite worth the money.

    and that Stephanie lum…well.

  94. Rodney August 16, 2013 10:34 am

#77 I think this rehearsal process

    came from Bill Walsh.

  95. Da Punchbowl Kid August 16, 2013 10:34 am

Pomai has an inner hippie?! I knew it!!! LOL!

  96. al August 16, 2013 10:35 am

I guess they need to re-visit the old rainbow warrior outfit??

  97. al August 16, 2013 10:37 am

boolakanaka…I think his name was “tufi”. the original one hit wonder.

  98. al August 16, 2013 10:40 am

haka should be done in the middle of the field centered upon the Hawaii logo at the 50 yd line. team should rotate to face all four sides of the stadium at one point of the ritual.

it was ours to start we should keep the tradition and the emotions it charges. but, it should be done after the warm ups and shortly before the first whistle.

  99. al August 16, 2013 10:40 am

    boom

  100. al August 16, 2013 10:41 am

ah that felt good. haven’t been around to hit a 100 in a long time.

time to rock n roll out of here for lunch.

  101. gobows August 16, 2013 10:42 am

NYUHTX – do you go to battle when you attend games?

on more than 1 occasion, the haka fired up the opposition more…and led to a big loss.

Hawaii did the haka before every game last year…in the locker room. got them 2 wins. lamar school for girls was a gimme.

imho, pregame haka is a waste of emotions and energy that should be used in the game. lots of time for the haka after the game.

  102. boolakanaka August 16, 2013 10:42 am

All I knew is back in the day coming up, at Halawa housing, there was an almost nightly volleyball game going for hours. And some of the fafafinis should have been certainly recruited to play some college sports….incredible athletic abilities.

  103. boolakanaka August 16, 2013 10:47 am

98—lol…Al, actually, Tuffy or Tufi, I knew his brother, who a starter at O-line for Idaho in the 80s. Needless to say, tough family, but very nice folks. However, if you messed around with them, as they would say back in the day, they would ku’i your maka.

They should retire #54 in honor of the Noga family and the contributions made by Niko, Al, Pete, and George.

  112. Derek August 16, 2013 12:01 pm

Dave Holmes started the Gold helmets. Say what your want, but those helmets and uniforms are associated with winning teams. They also gave us Casey Ortez and Golden Richards. Allen Brown was one hellava receiver.

  113. bowwar August 16, 2013 12:09 pm

We are warriors, so let’s continue the “tradition” of having a Warrior mascot…Vili was great and it would be nice to either “hire a professional” (like Vili) or make it a “student competition” to vie for the “Warrior” title inclusive of being at all UH events, etc. in exchange for a full scholarship and other perks.

I’m sure there are some native Hawaiian weightlifters or MMA “wanna be’s” attending UH and could use the exposure and scholarship to pursue their dreams…NA KOA could fund it and possibly, run the program so it occurs every year! I’m sure that will also help and boost fundraising for the organization.

Come ‘on, maybe Mr. Weir (We-ah) could get this into the right ears and make this happen.

  114. kazumia August 16, 2013 12:17 pm

Warrior mascot on full scholarship…now that’s a good idea. Now for all you guys remembering Club Hubba hubba and The Glades…I can’t believe no one remembers the original…Yappy’s of Kapahulu.

  115. Boolakanka August 16, 2013 12:27 pm

114 now you are taking it way back. Was in Glades once, and dis wahine wanted to know if I wanted a Golden Richards, sorry couldn’t resist such a bad joke ….

  116. bowwar August 16, 2013 12:36 pm

The mascot on scholarship (I believe) is the same formula Notre Dame uses in selecting their Leprechaun mascot…Some Universities use the mascot selection as a fraternity competition. In any case, the end result is someone representing the student body in the form of the type of mascot sought, whether its a Warrior or a “Prince Hanalei” type…

  117. bowwar August 16, 2013 12:40 pm

It could a “competition” of sorts inclusive of “Hawaiian Games”, knowledge of the Hawaiian Language, the ability to “chant”, Hula, scholastics (GPA) etc. And, it doesn’t necessarily have to be gender specific. Hey, there are some woman warriors who can truly “kick-butt”.

    Mr. Weir, where are you???

  118. DancingBear August 16, 2013 1:35 pm

Before I was 18, but right at senior year in HS, my cousin took me to the old hulas in waikiki. I didn’t really know if my cousin way gay at the time, but I guess I did, but it wasn’t the sort of thing you focused on when your that age. Anyway, after my first 30 minutes, there I started to notice the place was packed with guys….After another 30-45 minutes, my cousin checks in on me and ask “howzit, you doing OK?” To which I immediately replied…”this place is great, 4 different guys bought me free drinks—” Little did I know, to be so damn innocent and stupid again….

I’ve given and gave evrything I can to the UH Football Program…..and still my son despite years of service with me, was man himself to ask if he can also participate in Hawaii’s ProDay 2013 as a FA like other FA…So, my son asked the HC And coming from “HIM”,he said, “yes, Ill make phone calls and get back to u”. Well its been 2 months, no phone call to son. And all the FA training with my son was allowed to participate and my son was personally told at the PRO DAY this mrning, he COULD NOT PARTICIPATE. Iz one reason why u in the position rite dere to help the kids of Hawaii, no matter where they go, they are from this island. They represent us. Their families still live here!!! And today, SDSU said “yes” and UH say NO. you Call urself a local ? NO ur not?? U don’t love dese peopel on dis island, it’s okay.. whats go around, come around….all these years, I supported the program and even last year wen one of your Coaching staff ask me to host your recruits and talk to them and guess what? About 3 prospects committed that same night. That’s how much dedication and loyalty I had to this program!!! People like you guys coming in to this, it’s all about your own “thing”. Hawaii is a small island, but everyone here have LOVE for one another!!! The longest you here, MY YOUNGER SON IS NOT COMING TO THIS PROGRAM. YOU OFFERED HIM, BUT HONESTLY TAKE THE OFFER AND GIVE IT SOMEONE ELSE, CAUSE I LIKE PEOPLE WHO are STRAIGHT FORWARD AND HAVE LOVE IN THEIR HEART. How can I trust these kinda peopel with my son??..People like JUNE JONES WHO STAY REAL AND STILL DO THINGS FOR THE ISLANDS are REAL and take dis program to the Promised Land…people thats all I want to say, STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF, STAY LOCAL, STAY REAL, LIKE people that represent HAWAII llike SHANE VICTORINO people they call the ‘FLYING HAWAIIAN’ NOT THE “LYING HAWAIIAN”. for the players in the present and past, good luck to you and I still have love for you… STAY STRONG

158—It is easy funny that sometimes I feel like I had more money back in the day. Both my grandparents had 40+ years at Dole–plantation family. And how I despised working the 3 summers I did at the cannery, but I always had some change in my pocket; however, your expenses are limited when your only wants are mui, RC Cola and tomoe ame candy. Funny, I spent a lot of time at Aiea Bowl, which back in the day, at least from my family’s perspective that sketchy characters hung out. That said, although I never bowled in a league or anything, a lot must have rubbed off, as many years later when I took my wife on our first date to go bowling, and I out of the blue bowled a 200+ game–and she was super impressed. So, I gotta give Aiea Bowl props….
