Receiver/returner set to join Warriors

brey2

A speedy returner/receiver from two-time national champion Mount San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) has been cleared to play for the Warriors this season.

There were glitches in the UH application for Breydan Torres-Keohokapu, a Castle High graduate. Known as Keohokapu as his only surname at Mt. SAC, Torres-Keohokapu also has a hyphenated first name on his birth certificate. The long names caused mixups in comparing his transcripts and application. Once sorted out, he was admitted to UH (although he is not enrolled in summer session).

Torres-Keohokapu caught 21 passes for 471 yards last season. He averaged 23.5 yards per kickoff return, and had two punt returns for 59 yards (including a 49-yard return). In 2009, he averaged 31.7 yards per kickoff return.

Mt. SAC won the 2009 and 2010 California state championships. Seventy-two California community colleges field football teams. The California champion is recognized as a national champion.

Here are his Mt. SAC highlights: Torres-Keohokapu.

Interesting that the coaches’ “voluntary” pay cuts were not  mentioned as part of the reason for a projected profitable fiscal year. Guess somebody had a Chad Lowe moment.

    Toe-Mah-toe.

  9. wafan July 3, 2011 7:17 am

Kind of odd having fireworks stands all over the place but setting them off is illegal.

  10. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 7:17 am

    Parade starts at 10.

I think people start lining up at 9.

Hope we’re not behind the horses again.

  11. bigislandkurt July 3, 2011 7:17 am

    top ?

  12. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 7:21 am

    BIK:

    First of the non-Oahu islands.

  13. wafan July 3, 2011 7:26 am

Trick to marching behind horses is being far enough behind for either the pucky-pickers have enough time to do their job or being able to deviate from the line of march to avoid the land mines.

  14. d1shima July 3, 2011 7:30 am

    Great Morning All!

    Hyphenated first and last names?

    Just call him “Dash” 🙄

No mattah watchu call him, Welcome Home!

  15. wafan July 3, 2011 7:31 am

We broke the 80-degree mark yesterday. First time in 302 days!

Next one up is supposed to be this coming Tuesday.

  16. gigi-hawaii July 3, 2011 7:43 am

    ST,

where is the Warriors Conference Room located?

hubby and I are unfamiliar with Lower Campus.

we both will attend Mack’s Chat.

  17. gigi-hawaii July 3, 2011 7:44 am

btw, no news about ST being airlifted out of Hawaii Loa Ridge yesterday.

  18. gigi-hawaii July 3, 2011 7:46 am

now hubby says the conference room is located in the SS Center.

    True?

  19. BG July 3, 2011 7:49 am

Good morning folks! Dragging this over from last nite…

    BG:

    July 2nd, 2011 at 11:01 pm

Just back to check the comments on the practice t-gate. Didn’t expect a concensus…will just go with the majority. Or, if its close, with those who put up the best persuasion. I picked the 6th or the 13th of Aug because:

    1. It’s what’s available to me before Betty and I leave for our cruise. No one else wanted to pick dates so I get to choose…I attribute my over-bearing attitude to my megalomaniacal condition, and since I usually agree with myself (not narcissistic), I must be right

    2. HiFlyer is probably correct and we do need more than one practice to get it right. The usual comment heard from the old foggies is, “But…I fo’get already!” However, we have to balance honing razor sharp reflexes and Tsaiko like conditioning with the staleness of over-training. No easy task! Varying the training with cc’s and prayer meetings may do the job.

    3. ST, thanks for the suggestion for the 13th, but aren’t the practices in the morning? Not to say that it’s too early for Tsaikos. For instance we were all there early for the Army game. But, it usually takes us 4-6 hours to get a good warm-up! We could probably see the practices in the morning and then go out to our “training facilities” at Richardson Field for lunch and conversation. ST, it would be a great time to go over the season game plan.

Keep the comments coming. If can, a decision will be reached by 2400 tomorrow. Mahalo

  20. myki July 3, 2011 7:55 am

    BG

‘morning! Pls. check email. Thank you

  21. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 7:55 am

    BG:

    First things first.

Did you guys find a tailgate replacement for Curveball?

(This is when we need a blogger to be named Screwball.)

  22. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 7:57 am

    Gigi:

The coaches offices are in the UH athletic complex, not the Stan Sheriff Center.

    It’s on the second floor.

    Call me when you arrive.

  23. tommui July 3, 2011 7:58 am

    BG

Have you looked in CruiseCritic.com before you go on your journey? Lots of information in there.

It’s one of my bibles before I go anywhere – even in Hawaii!

  24. tommui July 3, 2011 8:00 am

And a good morning – one and all.

And AL, finally went to the Honolulu Burger place across from Times Super – Lois thought it was better than Teddy’s – but I thought it was about the same. Garlic fries wreaked my diet but so GOOD!

  25. tommui July 3, 2011 8:01 am

    ST #21 – Curveball can’t be replaced!

  26. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 8:05 am

    Tom Mui:

On the other hand, the garlic fries should keep you vampire-proof for the weekend.

Or is that a werewolf repellant?

  27. BG July 3, 2011 8:14 am

    tommui

Thanks for the site! I’m devouring all the info I can get my hands on!

  28. gigi-hawaii July 3, 2011 8:15 am

Wow, the Quarry has changed quite a bit since I lived on Kolo Place 1978-1980.

    hope we don’t get lost.

  29. BG July 3, 2011 8:15 am

ST…”Screwball”, dat’s funny! But I think that’s the (silent) middle name for all the bloggers.

  30. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 8:16 am

    Gigi:

Well, for starters, it’s no longer referred to as “the Quarry.”

  31. BG July 3, 2011 8:16 am

OK, going play the old futs softball…bbl

    Kekoa, check your text msgs

  32. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 8:17 am

    BG:

Screwball does have many meanings. But it also has the opposite effect of a curveball.

  33. gigi-hawaii July 3, 2011 8:17 am

    BG,

“Screwball” sounds too masculine to be a female’s middle name.

  34. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 8:18 am

“Check your text messages … ”

Seems like the students are passing notes behind the teacher’s back.

  35. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 8:20 am

    Gigi:

    Masculine?

Here’s a list of the top “screwball comediennes: http://www.imdb.com/list/QaY4tqkxTHE/

Unfortunately, it appears Lucille Ball is missing.

  36. gigi-hawaii July 3, 2011 8:22 am

I looked up ST’s ph nos in my little brown book and found:

a 479- no for his cell

a 525- no for his work place

then a 256- no for his new cell.

    correct, ST?

  37. al July 3, 2011 8:22 am

btk…sort of reminds me of chad owens. sees the field well makes one or two subtle moves and goes right up the gut. he could compete for that job soon.

  38. gigi-hawaii July 3, 2011 8:26 am

    #35 — Disagree.

Barbara Stanwyck and Katherine Hepburn should not be on that list of Screwball Commediennes.

  39. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 8:28 am

Only the last cell number is correct.

  40. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 8:30 am

Or you could wait by the elevators (next to the soda machines).

    That’s a good gathering spot.

  41. gigi-hawaii July 3, 2011 8:34 am

JD didn’t say this, but I wonder if the $50 student fee for the UHAD helped to keep the dept in the black this year.

I would love to chat with JD and ask a few questions about the stadium issue as well as the possibility of raising the student fee.

  42. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 8:43 am

Unfortunately for UH, tough times are ahead.

They won’t get any league money (from WAC or MWC) for 2011-12 fiscal year.

And then it will have to subsidize MWC and Big West travel starting in 2012.

Plus, it still has to pay back the money borrowed from other UH organizations that carried the athletic department’s accumulated debt.

  43. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 8:49 am

Watched last night’s replay of UH-Idaho football game.

It’s amazing how long ago that game felt.

  44. gigi-hawaii July 3, 2011 8:50 am

    ST,

will the designated UH channel be more profitable for UH than the ppv profits UH had with Oceanic?

I’m thinking of all those TV commercials!

  45. mctruck July 3, 2011 8:54 am

Well, I just had my lunch and it seems like I’ve had two successive breakfest’s???..maybe too soon for my lunch…..just had a jumbo hotdog and chips.

Oh well….let me figure what to have for dinner?!….bwaaahaha!, just joking ladat.

  46. gigi-hawaii July 3, 2011 8:56 am

    mctruck,

    funny you talk about lunch.

hubby wants to eat at Chile’s in Waianae.

we are driving west to Nanakuli, Waianae, and Makaha.

is Chile’s the only restaurant on the leeward side? geez.

  47. warriorsun July 3, 2011 9:03 am

ST, u didnt mention whether breydan would be included in the 105-player roster for camp.

with all the late minute add-ons there must be late-minute drop-outs. looks like the camp roster is fluid with just under 5-weeks to start date.

  48. mctruck July 3, 2011 9:04 am

So glad another Castle alum has found his way to join the UH Warriors.

    Gigi,

I made a two egg scrambled omelet this morning, with toast. Scrambled two eggs with milk, sprinkled with parmesan cheese, fresh chopped onions(quarter cup), and bacon bits, sprinkled black pepper/garlic mix, topped off with tabled spoon oyster sauce…broke-da-mout.

  49. al July 3, 2011 9:05 am

i watched portions of that idaho/uh game last night and later on the army/uh fourth quarter on one of the hd channels.

kind of gets your football juices flowing.

  50. gigi-hawaii July 3, 2011 9:07 am

    mctruck,

how can an omelet be scrambled?

    lol

it has to be one or the other, not both.

  51. d1shima July 3, 2011 9:10 am

    al,

Watched the 1st half of the Army game. Didn’t wanna see how it got to be so close at the end. 😉

  52. mctruck July 3, 2011 9:11 am

don’t know why?, but everytime I see wafan’s blog name…I start thinking bout waffles/pan cakes?!

  53. d1shima July 3, 2011 9:12 am

Was wondering how much “chirping” Salas will be doing in the NFL? It was surprising to see him carrying on against the Cadets.

  54. gigi-hawaii July 3, 2011 9:13 am

    food blog?

    the Warrior Beat beats on.

  55. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 9:14 am

    Warriorsun:

    Good point.

    I’ll double check.

For sure, he’s on the 120-player roster.

UH anticipated that Hill and Mamea weren’t going to make it. But I think Umu caught them by surprise.

  56. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 9:16 am

I watched the Jets-Colts playoff game. I knew the Jets won, but I forgot how they did it. (The curses of old age.)

But Collinsworth just did an outstanding job of breaking down the schemes.

I hope the next UH football color analyst can bring comparable insights.

  57. mctruck July 3, 2011 9:18 am

    Gigi,

knew u were going to ask that question….I let everthing set in the frying pan like it was going to be an omelet; just before the bottom started to harden, I just went and sorta stirred everything around so it would turn out like a soft scramble, and then let everything settle back down together like an omelet.

  58. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 9:18 am

    Gigi:

At this point, it does not appear Oceanic will have a 24-hour UH channel. At least for this year.

    Just not enough time.

I think there will be a separate channel to show UH events, though.

And I know there are plans to have Warrior-related talk shows, etc.

  59. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 9:18 am

    McTruck:

    Gas stove?

Sounds like it only works with a gas stove.

  60. gigi-hawaii July 3, 2011 9:19 am

    mctruck,

    rocket science?

    lol

  61. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 9:20 am

I always wanted one of those grill stoves.

Maybe it’s because of the Benihana experience.

Or maybe it was the time I was in Reno, and Johnny Rockets decided to make bacon for the Harley convention.

  62. gigi-hawaii July 3, 2011 9:21 am

    #58 ST,

now why isn’t that being reported in the newspaper?

    devastating news!

  63. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 9:21 am

Too bad with the cutbacks at NASA “rocket scientist” will go the way of “whippersnapper” and “fuddy-duddy.”

  64. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 9:22 am

    Gigi:

It will be all known when Oceanic/UH announce the PPV package.

  65. mctruck July 3, 2011 9:26 am

    ST,

knew u were going to ask dat question…..electric grill with non-stick 10″ minimum pan…2spoons olive oil and cook on medium heat…as soon as it reaches firmness u looking for, just move the pan to the side and serve.

  66. mctruck July 3, 2011 9:28 am

Gigi, no rocket science involved, ha,ha…..just watch all these cooking channels.

  67. mctruck July 3, 2011 9:29 am

eh!?, don’t know Y these t-shirts getting a little snug??, bwaaahahaha!!

  68. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 9:30 am

    McTruck:

    What kind of spatula?

I think that’s my problem with eggs.

  69. mctruck July 3, 2011 9:32 am

    ST,

I use the hard plastic….but then again, I eat my eggs sunny-side up so don’t have to worry bout the flippin issues.

  70. gigi-hawaii July 3, 2011 9:35 am

    hubby makes his own breakfast.

all I do is make the coffee and smoothies.

  71. d1shima July 3, 2011 9:35 am

    Flippin issues?

Some of us got ’em, some don’t. 🙄

  72. mctruck July 3, 2011 9:36 am

when frying just eggs…I find that if you place a cover over the frying pan, your eggs get done much faster.

  73. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 9:37 am

    McTruck:

I always have problems with the flippin’ issue.

Mostly because I always put the stove on “high.”

    I’m not very patient.

  74. gigi-hawaii July 3, 2011 9:37 am

    hey, is Lava around?

he’ll probably accuse us of going off topic.

    lol

  75. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 9:38 am

    D1:

At least the flippin’ issues aren’t while driving.

  76. gigi-hawaii July 3, 2011 9:39 am

someone yelled, “so do you have a flippin’ issue with that???”

    I backed away, slowly…

  77. mctruck July 3, 2011 9:39 am

My uncle would crack a fresh egg right on top of his hot rice and place a little bowl on top of it and after a minute or so it was good to go.

  78. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 9:40 am

    Gigi:

I already know about the new player.

I didn’t know how to make a scrambled omelet.

  79. warriorsun July 3, 2011 9:40 am

good news about donovan’s preliminary internal numbers that project black figures for the fiscal year just ended. JD cites cost containment and revenue spikes in men’s basketball, baseball and football together with a windfall in WAC earnings.

here’s the bad news according to ferd lewis,

“Donovan said if UH ends in the black, proceeds will go toward beginning to pay down the accumulated net deficit, which the department has been paying interest on”.

    pay down?

what about using the funds for investment?

    here we go again.

starving the cow that gives milk.

wasnt donovan instructed by our sagacious regents to run uhad like a business?

well, when a company makes profits, it invests into its infrastructure to assure future profits.

    that’s called business.

at least everywhere else in the capitalistic world but manoa.

is that what other departments are required to do on upper campus when they run overbudget? PAY DOWN?

    fair is fair, right?

    or is it?

how many departments have to support title IX mandates with their revenues or budget so more females can attend college on scholarship?

heck, how many departments make revenues? grants? or monetary awards for performance?

    let’s be fair.

it seems UH, for lack of a better description, is playing that old shell game, rob peter to pay paul.

it seems to fit a bean counter’s profile. just create labels for funds and keep shuffling the money all around until no one can point where anything flows. or should flow. that way you can disquise debt or assign it–whatever works for each peculiar political climate at any given time.

note to JD: red might be a better color if you hope to maintain and sustain your programs!

  80. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 9:41 am

    McTruck:

Now your uncle is a skillful man.

That’s another problem I have: cracking an egg without getting some shells in the omelet.

  81. d1shima July 3, 2011 9:42 am

    mctruck,

…with shoyu and, later I discovered, furikake.

My Mom asked me once, “Where did you learn to do that?”

    I told her, “From you!”

  82. gigi-hawaii July 3, 2011 9:42 am

btw, you guys should never use teflon pans.

    the broken fragments are carcinogenic.

    i always use stainless steel.

  83. mctruck July 3, 2011 9:42 am

    ST,

if you put a cover on the pan at medium heat, you won’t need to flip the eggs over…the steam will cook the top of the egg(s)…u just gotta keep an eye on it because it’ll cook real fast…less greasy eggs to boot.

  84. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 9:44 am

    warriorsun:

Good point on investing the “profit.”

Unfortunately for the athletic department, the fund where it borrowed money is real, and it was accumulated with surpluses from other UH programs. Of course, one is auxiliary services, which runs the RainBowTique. (The athletic department is paying back a group that earned money from merchandise sold at AD events.) But that’s a whole other issue.

  85. mctruck July 3, 2011 9:45 am

    Gigi,

I have both stainless and teflon….the stainless for recipies which require longer cooking time(s).

  86. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 9:47 am

It probably would have been better if the athletic department “borrowed’ the money from UH. That way the loan could be forgiven or, at least, the interest could be eliminated.

  87. mctruck July 3, 2011 9:50 am

So, do you think that UH athletic department has pretty much exhausted avenues to garner more money?

  88. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 9:50 am

    I feel sorry for Donovan.

It’s easy for the Regents to say: “Operate like a business.”

But in the business world, a company keeps its profitable lines, cuts out the money-losers.

Donovan isn’t allowed to eliminate the programs operating in the red.

  89. warriorsun July 3, 2011 9:54 am

ST: “real” only in the context it is defined, or not defined. this game has been going on in the state legislature since statehood. im just skimming the surface. if u r a loyal warrior fan, which i hear thrown around loosely on this blogsite, u should be peeved.

  90. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 9:56 am

    McTruck:

I think the athletic department needs a redistribution of the money.

I understand the parking money goes to the bond that paid for the construction of the parking structure. But the athletic department should be able to keep the parking money for its events (the reason non-students/faculty are going onto the campus).

It needs a better cut of H merchandise.

And it needs to keep all of the advertising money at UH games at Aloha Stadium.

  91. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 9:58 am

Along the same line, I think Aloha Stadium needs to sell its own advertising.

It contracts a company to do that.

  92. mctruck July 3, 2011 9:58 am

Time for my afternoon nap; have a happy 4th all.

  93. warriorsun July 3, 2011 10:03 am

#88. that is given. program enrollment at uhad is an ncaa requirement to compete.

UHAD must field non-revenue, women programs. period!

    that is not at issue.

what is at issue is a program that must be self-supporting by definition with it’s hands tied behind it’s back. no other programs at uh has these Machiavellian budgetary requirements.

  94. Da Punchbowl Kid July 3, 2011 10:06 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

    Good luck to Torres-Keohokapu.

  95. warriorsun July 3, 2011 10:13 am

no one gives more and receives less than the student athlete. the ncaa has admitted athletes are deprived of the basics that most academic scholarships provide. that should be part and parcel of any uhad investment portfolio. return the money back to uhad for reinvestment for its athletes and to secure its future. the list is endless and equally deserving. they earned it.

  96. Da Punchbowl Kid July 3, 2011 10:16 am

The facts is, things are tough all over. If and when the economy is fixed, things will be better across the board for everybody, UH athletics included. Meanwhile the leaders of all institutions and businesses, from the Pres to the Guv on down, a big part of their work is reducing budgets. Paycuts are the new normal.

I think our AD is doing a much better job than his predecessor on the budget. I just hope we can keep all the great coaches currently facing salary cuts.

  97. warriorsun July 3, 2011 10:25 am

    #96

gov abercrombie increased our state budget for the next two years.

send him an email about reducing spending bc we r in economic austerity and while ur at it–copies to carlisle on the rail and to barry on the $15 T defitit…..meanwhile, let’s be sure our boyz have soap and when they sign autographs for hours on end to promote uh sports merchandize, the revenues go in fair proportion to uhad.

  98. waffles July 3, 2011 10:25 am

    Hey, where is mctruck?

  99. wafan July 3, 2011 10:26 am

    Soooooo close.

  100. wafan July 3, 2011 10:27 am

    100!

  101. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 3, 2011 10:41 am

I asked this question weeks ago, but no one responded.

Who is still on the team recruited on June Jones’ watch?

We’re on our way to several different events and don’t have time to go into a lot of details, but I did want to address one issue that came up – the long-term Aloha Stadium site lease agreement between the Navy and the State of Hawai`i.

There have been transfer/land exchange discussions for at least 20 years; however, it wasn’t until the BCS system kicked in along with the high tech communications improvements, rail transit, and a major growth in international sports venues that talks began to get serious in the very late 1990s

By the time Lingle was in full charge of state government – around 2005 – her appointees began to get seriously involved in the Aloha Stadium development discussions. However, for a variety of reasons, things sort of fumbled & bumbled along without much happening until early 2008.

The land transfer discussions are “pending,” but there needs to be a move towards getting everyone pulling the wagon in the same direction before anything positive will happen any time soon.

If you are interested in becoming part of the long-term solution, please contact me directly off-blog: swood at hoku dot com. Be sure to include your (real) name along with your blog name, mailing address, phone number(s), and e-mail address.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

I have to agree with warriorsun. I really don’t think any other UH entity is asked to run like a business except Aux Svcs. UH may brag about all the grant money being brought in, but those grants pay for themselves and possibly reduce the amount the G-funded positions are paid by UH (not really). What UH does get (or does it go into the State g-fund?) are the “indirect” funds built into each grant. Not sure how much it is now. 28%? I was under the impression, but I may be wrong, it’s been a long time since I worked there, that indirect funds paid for stuff like electricity, facilities upkeep, etc.

  103. ya_think July 3, 2011 11:37 am

Doc don’t want to see any land transfer until the present guv is out of office next election, we need the stadium not more low rent housing.

JJ had the right idea when he hired Leigh Steinberg, JD needs to contract out the marketing for UH on a percentage contract to someone who know what they are doing because right now there is no one up there who does.

Carrying article over from yesterday on facilities improvements for Utah and keeping up with the Pac-12.

    http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/utes/52092239-89/utes-facilities-center-football.html.csp?page=1

    _ _ _ _ _

“Perhaps nowhere is that more obvious than the campuses of the Pac-12, where seemingly every school is in the midst of one massive capital project or another, designed to improve the facilities that attract top recruits and dazzle the paying customers. The Trojans are building a $70 million football headquarters at the center of campus, for example, and Cal is spending $321 million on a renovation of historic Memorial Stadium.

Meanwhile, the UCLA Bruins are renovating hallowed Pauley Pavilion for $136 million, the Arizona Wildcats are embarking on a plan to spend $378 million in facilities upgrades in the next two decades, and Oregon State is planning to build a track, a boathouse and an academic center, after already investing heavily in the last decade just to get off the mat against its richer rivals.”

“The irony, of course, is that it’s impossible to ever really win that battle — which is being waged all over the country, from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten to the SEC.”

    _ _ _ _ _

While each PAC12 school is worth “$20M-40M” each…I want to say that the money isn’t divided evenly. Utah probably won’t see as much money as a USC or Cal. Much like Texas in the B12.

I didn’t realize how much money these schools were investing into their programs. Hundreds of millions worth of upgrades etc.

I like the quote about how a these top schools can never really win the battle because schools will always try to one up each other.

I posted a referrence about the, stadium in Phoenix yesterday…don’t know if you got a chance to read that information?, I thought it might be useful for any discussions about all the financial goings-on in Hawaii with regard(s) to the stadium, etc.

(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_0f_Phoenix_Stadium/) could you read that information and let me know what you think?

  107. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 3, 2011 12:52 pm

I can’t remember what ESPN commentator/guest was on but they were talking about some of the BCS schools getting out of the NCAA for football and doing a semi-pro league.

I know it was all for discussion and giggles but it sounded interesting. The Ohio State, USC’s etc would form their own league of sorts that would be subject to their own rules on paying for recruiting services, paying players, TV money, etc.

The TV networks and the general public want to see most of these teams below play. They are the “big draws” and I could see great interest from Fox,Comcast,ESPN all fighting to pay HUGE tv rights for a much more concentrated league of the best teams and/or best market areas.

Does anyone know if such a league could possibly be formed..Meaning any laws against such a thing? I heard of BYU soccer being in some kind of professional development league or something.

  109. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 3, 2011 12:59 pm

Off course the biggest argument against #107 is that it simply would not happen…lol.

Leaving schools in your conference and a whole bunch of other logistical issues that would cripple lots of programs.

But if these schools didn’t have to give a rip about their conference mates and what happens to the schools left out of this semi-pro/autonomous league, I can see it being a pretty interesting product.

  110. mctruck July 3, 2011 1:03 pm

Iwonde r, ur#107…..yeah, and I can see those so called top shelf bcs teams eventually schedualing nfl teams on their scheduals so they can make more money as well?!

  111. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 3, 2011 1:03 pm

What I am going to try and find out (or if Wsdoc already knows) is what the true yearly cost of maintenance and operation of Aloha is.

Like Garret pointed out before, it may be better financially for the State to foot the bill for stadium upkeep while UH just borrows it for its games.

If the cost is higher than what we can reasonably be brought in by UHAD then no make sense to take over.

SDSU uses Qualcomm. Does anyone know what their deal is like?

  112. mctruck July 3, 2011 1:04 pm

  113. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 3, 2011 1:05 pm

Why not right? I mean, its possible. I’m sure most would get totally slaughtered but I would pay to watch a National Champion team play a NFL team just to see.

  114. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 3, 2011 1:09 pm

    #112,

Yes a HUGE part of it is greed. But another part too is the NCAA sanctions and violations and rules etc. Maybe these schools just don’t want to be bothered by having to worry about a tattoo here or a $40,000 check there.

I don’t like it anymore than the next guy, but maybe these schools are thinking if they can afford to pay the big bucks, then they should be able to.

    horse whispers from lower manoa:

I asked mr ed about tate forcier. he raised his head and said, “no chance”.

but he smiled wide, flashing his colgate and snorted, “wait til you see tavita”.

big grin for a horse that just took a pay-cut.

look, the bright spot for warrior team 2011 has to be D.

with 5 new OLM, three new receivers and a redshirt RB that has yet to make a D1A block, it’s improbable we reload on offense.

im still stuck on the worst spring exhibition by our O I’ve have seen in awhile. bryant moniz has stated in mature fashion, the work lays ahead– to click together, and everything hangs in the balance. nothing is given.

so, if mr ed is estactic about a de, among others on this unit, get ready to chant De-Fense!

  126. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 3, 2011 2:55 pm

Something about our O-line. Whether it be a fans observation or a sportswriter or those preview mags…they have never really been that positive about our O-line. In the past few years its either been a brand new unit or an experienced unit that hasn’t done that well. =(.

Hopefully this new unit will be well oiled come 2012 when we have an inexperienced (or Experienced *wink*) guy at QB.

  129. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 4:13 pm

I think UH’s o-line will develop OK. The young guys are going to be pretty good. It probably won’t show in the first month, but things will get better.

    #128,

well so it’ll continue on. oh wells.

  131. Stephen Tsai July 3, 2011 4:16 pm

As for the BCS schools, I see the bubble bursting soon.

BCS was created so a select group could reap most of the TV money.

Then the conferences expanded so they could reap more TV money.

Eventually, they’re going to want more money. Where’s it going to come from? A playoff? Maybe. But the more you earn, the more you spend.

  132. RedZone July 3, 2011 4:39 pm

Once they start paying players they can unionize and seek a CBA. Then we may see the first college football lock out.

  133. warriorsun July 3, 2011 4:41 pm

    ST.

without much fanfare the head of the bcs, bill hancock, met with doj officials thursday to explain how major college crowns a champion. the meeting lasted 90 minutes and was held in ny.

NCAA president Mark Emmert directed the department to the BCS. So the DOJ asked for a meeting with BCS officials. hancock was accompanied by lawyers.

doj spokeswoman gina talamona declined to confirm the meeting took place.

espn reported that hancock said he brought two attorneys to the meeting and that he came away from it with no sense of whether he would be hearing from the doj again. He added that the department did not request any records or documents.

even if there is no federal investigation, the bcs is already under fire from at least one state. The attorney general of utah has plans to file an antitrust lawsuit against the bcs.

for those who are familiar with doj procedures this is the beginning….let the fun begin.

hancock is always touting how the bcs has included mid-majors and given them millions to play in their post-season bowl games, but has failed to mention that the midmajor team shares were disproportinate to favored programs in the bcs alignment who played in the same game and in front of the same tv viewership.. neither did he mention mid-majors are not automatic qualifiers….stay tuned.

  134. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 3, 2011 4:49 pm

    #133,

Do you see anything preventing the BCS conferences pulling out of the BCS and forming their own league? Keep the gravy train coming. While the mid-majors etc would then have to form their own league or go under the NCAA with a playoff or something.

While extreme, I would imagine they would consider it if it were legal.

  135. warriorsun July 3, 2011 4:53 pm

it wont take more than a cursory glance by the doj to see how the bcs is thinly structured.

they really are run by the 5-conferences disguised as the bcs. it is glowingly apparent the ncaa threw out the baby with the bath water when it refered all football championship inquiries by the doj to the bcs….:)

Breydan Torres-Keohokapu’s Mt. SAC 2009-2010 video makes him look like a slow Chad Owens. Critical goods: he knows to go North-South at full speed. Noticed that he got caught from behind on many of the plays featured in the video. st…egg tip of the day.

i’ll bet that you crack the egg at one of the ends and/or you crack the egg on an edge like the end of counter or a bowl’s lip.

next time crack the egg on its side or the middle, if you will, on a flat surface like the pan or the counter top.

also, touch has a lot to do with it. like anything else you crack em too hard it will shatter you want to break em so the the shell is still attached to the inner membrane of the egg.

    flipping eggs tomorrow.

Tomorrow DrDoc and I will be marching in two different groups in the 64th Annual Kailua Fourth of July Parade and then heading on out to the Ewa Plain for a two-hour round-trip train ride to Ka`ena Point. When we get back, we’ll be heading on into town to see the fireworks from Kewalo Basin. These shoot-offs are awesome.

Any suggestions for an early din-din?

BACK TO THE ALOHA STADIUM SITE DISCUSSIONS: Although I am a very strong advocate for the public’s participation in decisions, I am sorry to say that there will be very little opportunity for individuals to get involved in what happens with the land lease transfer process.

One of the reasons why Abercrombie wanted to get mass resignations from the Stadium Authority was to make sure that his new appointees would support his positions on what would happen to the entire site over the next decade.

No matter what, the lease transfer issue will be resolved shortly. Frankly, I was surprised that it wasn’t completed last fall, but I gather that the 2010 election sort of back-burnered everything.

Remember that in order for Abercrombie to carry out his plans for the site, not only does the transfer have to take place but also he has to get the restrictions removed by Congress AND legal parameters set by the Legislature. The former will be much easier than the latter even with the teapartytypes in the US House.

No matter what, the land lease transfer has to take place and the restrictions removed by Congress.

Remember that Abercrombie has refused to release $57 million in upgrades. He has made it very clear that as long as this is all he can do for now, that’s what’s going to happen.

No Hawai`i governor has line item veto power, but s/he can withhold the $$$$ release.

Can he be pressured to do so. Theorectically, yes, but realisticly under the present circumstances, it ain’t gonna happen.

It’s Step Three – what happens with the Legislature – that those of us who care about the future of the entire Aloha Stadium site have to start working with either the incumbents or by getting people to run either for office or for an appointment for the Stadium Authority.

Biffing and pooing on a blog does not have much of an influence. If there are folks here who want to take an active role in making sure that The Right Things happen, then it is necessary to join up with others and create not just a political action committee but an advocacy group.

Laura the shark was hungry which is why it bumped me. I had a fish on a spear at the time. I released the fish and the shark went after it. I went back to shore.

  178. warriorsun July 3, 2011 10:45 pm

eh, doc, good layout of the aloha stadium transfer process.

although i disagree on your contention that passage in the us house will be easier.

true, abercrumie made friends on the other side of the isle while serving as a rep from hawaii in a key military comm. however, there have been changes since then. he flopped on the sovereignty bill, as an example, even with the deck stacked in the house and senate and obama in the white house. he was tow-headed and too short to slam dunk. although his bill passed his house it died in the senate. he is showing the same arrogance.

dont sell the michelle bachman’s short. another conservative, Lt. col allan west serves on the armed services comm (r-fla) and is making an impact. neil left before the house takeover in 2010 and many of the freshman have military backgrounds and will see the heavy-handed play by his state administration. this is the right climate to stop him inside the beltway. the 2012 elections are huge and both parties will wage battles to win control of their respective houses.

democratic rule in the us senate is in jeopardy as nearly 33 are up for re-election compared to half the amount on the republican side. this has lateral affect on the us house.

jmo, this will have more affect rather than an unlikely margaret meade moment in hawaii.

truth be told, im disillusioned with hawaii’s ruling class. the field is heavily tilted to one party and going against the network is a huge mountain to scale for one isolated issue, even though it shows the govs colors. i dont trust anything they say in our leg as long as they are sucking contributions from unions. and in the instant issue, unions stand to gain.

our voters keep electing the same types. it’s sad, if not tragic. hawaii is being sold out–lock, stock and barrel.

kudos to you for encouraging blogsters to get involved in the political process and i want to support your efforts. but, i feel the fastest way to defeat the govs attempt to remove restrictions on the aloha stadium site or modify its use is to directly contact us congressional members on the subject matter comm.

send emails to members on the comm of jurisdiction in the us house and voice your complaint. perhaps u can provide the relevant contact info. thanks again.

Warning: Following is about the practice t-gate. Those not interested can save some time and skip to the next post.

Decision has been made (purely arbitrary) to use the August 6th date. Kekoa will coordinate with SteveM to see if we can put a listing of the attendees and the fuud on Steve’s site. As soon as that is confirmed and the process is set-up, please respond as soon as possible so there’s a tentative picture of the group’s size…..

We’re good to go. Tailgate notice and requested info ready for daily update. Located in it’s usual spot in the Tsai-ko Events Calendar listing by date. (lower left portion of the main page–click on my name).

You want list of attendees too? No problem. Kekoa must have forgot, spending a lot of time convincing me to try and list tailgate fuud contributions. 👿 OK, one more time…it’s new season. 🙂

Just post on the blog if you will attend. Also what fuud dish you might bring. I will extract the info from the blog and update the web page daily.

redzone…the first time you see the “man” in the water makes your heart skip a beat or ten.

first one for me was a 10-12 foot tiger in the silouhetted in the wave that i was about to ride. buggah had one crusty top fin, too.

you are right though they are out there…everywhere.

  181. Da Punchbowl Kid July 4, 2011 12:21 am

Seen the man 6 ft away while night diving. Big one, long body passing through the light of my flashlight. It knew I was there but could have cared less I think. I shook with fear, then beat the next wave to shore.

  182. al July 4, 2011 12:30 am

  184. SteveM July 4, 2011 1:06 am

As a night akule fisherman on my old 15′ boat, I used to put down an akule as bait on a light trolling pole. One night the reel screamed and I fought it for 10-15 minutes. Finally, in the light from the akule lamp on the water, I saw a shark that looked as long as my boat. I cut the line quick (I always wear a sheath knife on a small boat).

  185. SteveM July 4, 2011 1:29 am

I hope my #185 doesn’t scare someone I know who who is looking at a fishing kayak to go akule fishing. 😐 No worry…a shark will easily break monofilament line used for akule. My pole had steel leader since I was hoping for an ono or barracuda.

I’m watching Navy/Army game(s) on cbsSports channel and looks like a string of past games to honor our U.S. service people.

I marvel at how presently, the HC coaches are both former players,(including, JJ), from UH. I wonder whatever current and former players with UH connections will appear on the horizon? All of these individuals are not coaching bcs teams, but they could very well be, like (JJ), who turned down the Maryland, job.

Marvelous article on June. Hate him if you want to but I haven’t met anyone personally who has done more good for more people. Genuine kind of guy with his good points over-shadowing his faults…kinda like many of the Tsaikos. Interesting and brilliant how he’s able to tie his philantropy to the football program. Example, even though humanitarian efforts in Samoa have not resulted in a pipeline of recruits, I’ll bet the house (A-House?) that he gets his share from Euless, TX!

This 2011 Fourth of July looks gorgeous!

  205. BG July 4, 2011 7:16 am

    Liz

Just out of curiosity…how much did that watermelon weigh?

  206. BG July 4, 2011 7:30 am

In 2007, when Betty was first going through chemo, I would go to the commissary twice a week to buy local watermelon and scavenge the neighborhood for mangoes. Those were some of the things whose smell got her to eat…olfactory memory is a great thing. I figured I bought over 150 lbs of watermelon that summer!

Used to thump all the melon for that “certain sound” but that used to take forever. Finally taught myself to check the vine end to make sure it was fresh (not dried out) and pushed on the other end to get a little bit of give…if it was too soft with a crackling feeling, it was over-ripe. My success rate went way up after I found that method!

Well…QB Tom Brady seemed to be to selected as No.1 in Prime 100 football players of season 2011-12 at genuine American footbal online store. I love his experience very much. Late round draft choice, little kid at the combine, eventually recommended a venture and staying the fantasy of NFL prominence and a super model girlfriend. I used to show my pride by wearing out football jersey with a number 12 and his name. There’s a retailer from where i selected my fantastic jerseys. Jeter’s fans could get mlb jerseys, Jordan’s follower can obtain discount nba jerseys and Crosby’s enthusiasts can order nhl jerseys wholesale there. What’s awesome is they offer youth nfl jerseys and women jerseys. I bought 2 pieces as gifts to my nephew. He likes it very much. I purchased my sports team a dozen of cheap nfl jerseys at about 20 dollars, quality is a whole lot better than expectation, big surprise. Actually i want to have my own name and number padded on NFL uniforms, I hope they are able to custom made jerseys before long.
