Ray Lewis, Wes Welker, Colt Brennan, Davone Bess, David Veikune and Jake Ingram are among the football players who will attend a July 9 fundraiser that will benefit the Warrior football clinics and camps. Further details to come.

Remember Jacob Barit, a 2006 All-State linebacker from Saint Louis School? After playing the past two seasons at Arizona Western (junior) College, Barit is seeking to transfer to UH this summer. In 2008, Barit had 41 tackles, including four behind the line of scrimmage, and forced two fumbles. He is 6 feet 2 and 225 pounds.

Expect Mike Trapasso to receive an extension on a contract that expires June 30. Talks are planned for this week. While the Rainbows did not fulfill a goal of winning the WAC Tournament, they proved to be entertaining, improving turnstile count by about 25 percent over the previous year. That’s not bad in a tough economy. Besides, would you really want to see UH convene another search committee?

As a continuation from the previous entry’s debate, there indeed was a search committee when June Jones was selected. That committee, however, traveled to the candidates.
I believe Dr. Miyawake, Donovan, Yoshida and Fink were part of the group. They met in San Diego. I think Miyawake and Fink helped make assurances to cover the offer: $320,000, which was a big increase back then.
A week later, Yoshida and Leigh Steinberg finalized the deal via a 2-hour teleconference.

That’s what I thought. It looks like that search committee was way more proactive than the current one(s) convening over the most recent head coaching vacancies…..that committee seemed to have already had a list of possible candidates they were seeking (on top of any other applicants who applied per State mandate), whereas the committee for the current vacancies really didn’t appear to have anybody in mind from the beginning and are simply [slowly, I might add] going through all of the applications they received for the vacancies.
I think they all thought they had a shoo-in with someone locally and didn’t bother processing the rest of the resumes. AND when that someone didn’t meet the minimum qualifications that the committee had set forth, they tried to massage what experience that person had to fit the requirements. AND when that didn’t work.. they were caught with their pants down and no where to hide, so they through out some names randomly. AND when these names were called by certain writers… we found out that none had been contacted! They turned the UH Athletics Department into a joke.

With Trapasso likely receive a contract extension, I wonder what the length of the extension will be as well as if there are going to be any additional clauses or stipulations in it.
Like the other head coaches, I assume Trapasso is a member of HGEA, so some of the most draconian performance measures that some are calling for likely won’t be in this extension.
I bet Bolla and his Legal Eagles are keeping an eye on the developments of the Women’s BB coach search. If they can turn it into an example of inequities towards Women’s sports, you can bet they will.

If they give Trap an extension, something needs to change. In the begining of the season, they played REALLY well. The other teams started adjusting to the pitching and hitting, but UH coaching stayed the same. No changes were made. Just like football, at halftime, the coaches need to adjust to what the other teams are doing. If they come out in the second half and continue the same stuff, games are lost.
I think the biggest disappointment was the pitching. They were doing well, then faltered in the end. From what I see at the games only, I have never seen Konishi come out and visit the mound this past season. I have never seen Konishi go out to the bullpen when there is a pitcher warming up. I have not gone to any practices so don’t know what’s going on there but is he really the pitching coach??
I’m not sure why Trap is on the hot seat. He has recruited some decent talent, the guys play hard, and the games are entertaining. The WAC was very competitive this year with a lot of great players. Look at all the good coaches in the WAC. Bring any two teams together and there has to be a loser. Should every coach be fired?
My only gripe would be that the guys seems to have too loose of a strike zone, with the exception of Kolten Wong, who never seemed to swing at a bad pitch. Maybe more hitting instruction would have made a difference this year.
I’d be surprised if we can do better than Trap.

While pitching may have been one of the problems in the late season, the most glaring problem was the inability to hit (especially in the tournament).
You cannot expect the pitching to hold true to form at hitter’s parks like New Mexico, Nevada and Fresno. It was inevitable that our pitching staff was going to give up runs in those ball parks. However, while our hitting did improve…..we never were able to keep up with the other teams (remember, we got 10 run ruled TWICE at NMSU).
The inability to hit cost us the tournament. One hit with the bases loaded in the LaTech game….and we win that game.
Our pitching for this tournament was good enough for us to win it.

it is interesting that since the filipinos understand english pretty well, i suppose the hawaii womens team could find 1 player, but it might be difficult to canvas the whole country, the team would need a liaison for sure.

Just to follow up on the last blogs conversation.
I think Trap should get at least one more year to see what he can do with a mostly return team. I do think that we need a new hitting coach. Our hitting is very bad in my opinion and we need someone that will come in and change the mentality of our batters.
If we do not contend for a WAC championship next year, then I think he should just quit. With the talent that is coming in and the talent we currently have, there should be no excuse for not winning the WAC next year.

Yes, it was a tough conference this year, and yes we got a winning record, but performances were just so inconsistent. Power hitters, but also very streaky. Pounding road opponents by 15 runs (granted, sometimes in launching pad parks), then getting pounded by 7 runs by Fresno to end their season. A so-so win-loss record, and only one year of significant success in the WAC.
I don’t follow the BaseBows anywhere near as closely as the football team so I won’t be rushing to judgment. I’d say giving him 1-2 more years as with Nash is a fair way to go about things. What do the more informed BaseBows fans think?

Cannery is located in North Vegas off of Craig.
East Cannery is located on Boulder Hwy just south of Sam Boyd’s Town & Casino and Boyd Stadium is less than 1 mile away.
East Cannery Hotel & Casino is about 2 years old with lots of parking. Same side as Sam’s Town and Boyd Stadium.
Will check the buffet out in June.

i think mih made a good point in 57, trap did explore other job opportunities last year or the year before….all three coaches enjoy the game but there is more to the program than showing up and running practice and coaching at game time…we need coaching to get us up to the forty win mark to qualify out of the WAC….NMST and SJST are in the 40 win column we’ll see if both get into the NCAA this season should Fresno will the Tournament…

Sanoe Kekahuna of Baldwin on the Cal bears softball team playing #1 Florida..Florida’s number 2 pitcher, Brombacher, is 21-0 with a 0.78 ERA. Florida has won 57 games to date…so a 40 win season isn’t out of reach for UH baseball or softball…
coach les use to say if we win 50 games they got to take us (extend UH a regional bid) those we the good old days with Dietz (San Diego State) on the selection committee icing him every which way.
But back then, Coach Les would schedule a million games every year. Now, the cap is 56. 40 wins is the magic number. Win 40 games out of 56, and you have yourself a .700 record. It’s always a reasonable goal.

The baseball season did not start until February 20, which forced Trap to schedule 56 games in 13 weeks, where in previous years he would have had maybe 3-4 extra weeks. Trap also had to schedule mid-week games on all the conference road trips. While they won 2 of those 3 games, they took a mauling at Arizona St and taxed the pitching for each four-game conference series. Some other things happened:
1. Cold weather schools were not as willing to travel, which may have forced the road trip to Minnesota.
2. UH Hilo dropped down to Division II. Not only would that have discouraged some schools from visiting, it deprived Trap of some relatively easy-to-schedule mid-week games.
It’s true that all teams had to play under these conditions, but no other team has to travel that far. Five trips to the mainland in three months? Even A-House and family don’t go to Las Vegas that often. I think everyone just got worn down.
el guapo….ncaa mandated the start date for all baseball programs. seems to me that our ad should petitiion a hawaii exemption, allowing us at least a two week head start because of the traveling distance consuming too much time for our teams thus giving our student athletes more time in between travel dates to, er, study.

Was it the NCAA record for most career touchdowns responsible for (146)? Was it the NCAA record for most 400 yard games (20). Maybe it was the NCAA single-season record for most touchdown passes achieved in 2006 (58). No, I bet it was the NCAA record for passing efficiency in a season (186.0). Well it could have been the NCAA record for most points responsible for (season) with 385. Or it could have been the NCAA record for highest pass completion percentage (70.4%).
Perhaps if he had better form he would of bettered his career touchdown passes (131). Or maybe he would have passed for more then 14.193 yards.

yes UH travels a lot but the bottom line is you got to win the games you play more often than you lose and with Trap we are about the 55% level. JD needs to set a 40+ win season. we those numbers we should be a favorite to win the WAC and playing for the WAC championship, lose the championship, we should be considered as an at large entry with 40+ wins. 55% won/lost won’t cut it…
funny thing about a lot of coaches, they live their 2nd life in the players. they don’t let the player be just themselves, but to be an imitation of the coach.
the RPI takes a hit when the WAC season starts. only the commish and the coaches think we are a tough conference. one look at the regional pairings and reality strikes. only the WAC champ is invited.
mechanics is important, but when a player reaches the nfl or major league, his talent becomes more dominant. a coach or team can ruin a player and when they do, they don’t blame themselves, but put the blame on the player. Tatsuno??????

Of course, you know that South Point is about 5 miles southwest of Mandalay Bay on Las Vegas Blvd and about 10-12 miles from Boyd Stadium.
It would be much farther for us to drive from dowtown or place on the Strip to South Point and then take a bus ride from South Point to Boyd Stadium. The bus company charges for the bus and cost split amonst all the riders. Tip for the driver is optional. We chartered a bus from Bell Trans in April this year and cost was $85 each way from The Cal to Red Rock Resort. Distance and time was not a factor.
If we go to East Side Cannery its so much closer for the game.

There were certain conditions entering this season, and the Rainbows probably met about two-thirds of them.
They had a nice recruiting class this year, and a good one is coming in for the 2010 season.
So, hey, I’d say he’ll get a one-year extension.

whitey Florida won 60 games this season with the finals still to come… they won 70 games last year…we need higher benchmarks for Coolen to produce to be a national contender…he has won 65% of his games, been good, but to get to the next tier, he has to push 70% plus like the pac 10 teams to reach the super regional status.
As I wrote yesterday, 5-year deals appear to be rage.
Then again, the soccer coach only got a three-year deal. Hmmm …

Their pitching should be fine with Ricketts and Parnaby (who top out @ 63 – 66 mph), but they will need to hit. Majam needs to come back from her ACL injury and hit as expected; ditto Bertussi. They need another bat to add to Tauali’i and Warren.
If they get to super regionals, there are a lot of pitchers that hit 67 mph. Arizona adds the next superstar who hits 71 mph routinely.

what would be neat is if the uh community colleges start having organized sport(s). golf or tennis would be naturals cause most of the kids have their own equipment, but what would be fun is that they can play against each other and have their own championship. basketball is another. hawaii community college league!!!!!

athletics almost coming to a close…one last chance to cheer- our Na Wahine entering NCAA regional in Track and Field….Kaufmann, Wichmann, Sheppard, and a few more made qualifying times to make the regional.
It’s a no brainer that Ray Lewis is coming in to help out UH because Greg McMackin coached Lewis at the Canes and won a national championship. Now, if we can just get Duane “da Rock” Johnson come over and help out too. McMackin also coached the Rock at Miami. Hum, maybe Lewis and the Rock can donate some mula to NaKoa to help the program. Personally, I’d like to see Lenn Sakata be UH baseball coach.
He certainly has the experience and resume to be a head coach since he was a manager in the minor leagues for San Francisco. The only hang up might be his degree, but no one questions that he’s qualified.
Managing in the professional ranks for several years can be a substitute for a degree. You can’t tell me that exceptions can be made. I bet you the fans will come out in droves if he’s the coach. As it is, I refuse to buy any seasons tickets for any sport. I will go to a game if somebody gives me free tickets. Otherwise, I watch on TV and buy pay per view for football. Thankfully or should I say mercifully, baseball is over and we look forward to football season. Finally, we should have known that eventually Fresno St. would win. Something about that team. Their coach Mike Batesole is one smart cookie. His strategy against UH was very smart…..changing pitchers at just the right time and going lefty against lefty or righty against righty to get critical outs to end the innings.
and to think that Trap can he Hawaii as a highly regarded pitching coach from Georgia Tech..maybe he just had the horses there and just had to sit back and watch them do their thing…
WayneO it is Hawaiian politics and HGEA protocol….Sakata without a masters degree can’t coach at UH…same with the High Schools…I remember when someone I knew who graduated from West Point, got a masters from MIT and completed his tour with the Military he wanted to teach in the public schools but was denied because he did not have a teaching credential…His resume to the DOE showed that he taught at West Point in the subject area he wanted to teach. I have not heard from las vegas recently, but the last I heard, he was still investigating September 20 tailgate buffet possibilities based on price and location. I’m sure he appreciates all buffet venue tips he receives.
It is still early yet to commit somewhere, I think. He has the early preliminary info and projections…. 120-160 tailgate, 65-80 for bus, and 60-80 for Friday night Get-together. When Rich2176 is through with the final ticket purchases, those number could increase.
Since las vegas is known to be a great host, consummate buffet gourmet 🙂 and a professional driver, I think most will feel comfortable with whatever choices he makes. Not to second-guess him, but looking at 2007 he picked a location/route which is contra the traffic (jams) converging on Sam Boyd Stadium from the downtown and strip directions.

Hugh screwed up with his bud from Linfield and wasnt going to make another mistake. BTW, that “committee” was great (donovan was carrying luggage) and were doers! Period.

I saw a zatoichi dvd at walmart’s several months ago but it wasn’t the original- shintaro so I didn’t get it.
I got the shogun’s assassin – lone wolf and the child from walmart but it is dubbed.

Today as we enjoy our Memorial Day please take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by the men and women of our military. Their willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice to protect and defend our constitution is one of the primary reasons we are able to enjoy our freedoms.

The colonies were taxed partly to help pay for the continued growth of the English Empire. At issue was the idea of non-respresentation. We are all. supposedly. represented in our legislatures and the Congress. If we do not like what they are doing we can get involved and vote them out of office. Admittedly, it is difficult to root out the incumbent!

That is how Roger Williams, not the singer, founded Providence, Rhode Island. If not for Govenor Williams democracy and the United States of America probably would not exist as it does today.

I couldn’t agree with you more on your observations of the apparent difference between June Jones and your newest head coach (McMackin). However, that being said I have to sincerely wonder WHY your coaching staff would CHOOSE to bring in someone like Ray Lewis considering the FACT that Ray Lewis was indicted for murder and aggravated assault in 2000. Very uncool choice IMO.It is true that the charges were later reduced to “Obstructing Justice” but the stigma remains for Ray Lewis to this day. In the eyes of many he is nothing but a murderer who was given preferential treatment because he plays in the N.F.L.
