Raising the bar

Norm Chow has always placed a high emphasis on education. After all, he does have a PhD. His children have advanced degrees, and a daughter-in-law was No. 1 in her BYU law school class.

That is why it should be no surprise that Lacy Lavarias is helping to manage the football office on a voluntary basis. Lavarias, an Iolani graduate, is a third-year law student who will graduate from the Richardson School of Law in May.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Tough loss for the Warriors last night. UCI isn’t ranked #2 for nothing. As usual, there were some crucial non-calls. I thought UCI had no answer for UH’s middles.

    GO WARRIORS!

    GO WAHINE!

I just wanted to acknowledge buffoman and the others who gave me the 411 on the BI women who chose to go play up in Wafan land…Mahalo!

C’mon coach Dana! You can do it…you can do it…ALL-Nite-Long!

kawika49 ~ My nephew Keoni is making plans to play in a golf tourney in your backyard in the Spring. If possible, me and Diana will be there at the 19th hole to help celebrate his victory. (He sez it’s a LOCK.) The party hats and noise makers are boxed and at the ready.

  22. Kekoa February 11, 2012 10:34 am

    Hiya jmxxxx!

I watched the MVB on da tube. Both teams were really pounding the ball. It was exciting to see our guys win the 1st one and hang close in the others. The #2 team in the nation had to EARN their victory. Our guys will only get better.

Oh and much Mahalos to you for being one of the team Mom’s. The Tsaiko support is evident across the UH sports horizon.

  32. jm2375 February 11, 2012 11:02 am

Kekoa-sensei – #24 – unfortunately, Stretch was flying solo last night. And no yellow cards were issued last night, even though Charlie Wade wanted one (something about a uniform issue for UCI, player was wearing the wrong jersey).

On a side note, the Screechers were teaching the younger kids when to screech… Apologies to PP & Stretch.

  33. whitey February 11, 2012 11:09 am

st, i think coach chow is using volunteers to help organize the non playing part of the football program. fund raising, tutors, etc are all essential parts, but that would load the asst coaches with too much work.

  34. whitey February 11, 2012 11:11 am

am still very curious about the “rebounder(s)” for da warriors.

  35. whitey February 11, 2012 11:18 am

what also is interesting about the new fb program is that they already have offered scholies to sum of the top hi players and have a bunch of potential recruits. now that is something da warrior program has been lacking.

  36. jkjones February 11, 2012 11:21 am

@32. ditto, Norm is a professional college coach. When he does use personal contacts, he selects very deserving, competent people.

Lacy Lavarias is an Iolani grad and attended Utah and played VB for the lady utes. Her dad, Lyle, attended Waialua and was a standout for the bulldogs in football and played for the utes in ’73-’75 as a defensive safety when Chow was a GA at BYU. Their paths have intersected many times, from the North Shore in Hawaii to Salt Lake City in Utah over a period of 40 plus years.

Chow is willing to give youth a go, but you better be sharp and ready to give it all. He expects no less from his people than he expects from himself. That should offer a solid clue as to what he is all about.

That same self-measurement applies to his team.

Old school thinking believes that success is earned through disciplined, pervaisive habits–a flaw in one area leads to a breakdown in others, so on and so forth. Chowfun? Not!

It’s more like Chairman Chow’s Football Manual 🙂

  37. Kekoa February 11, 2012 11:23 am

jmxxxx ~ Screechers holding classes now at the SSC?! OMG we are in trouble.

On a serious note. I noticed that we draw the blocks that we normally do at the net. Just wondering. What if they were to run an X in the middle of the net and then shoot an outlet set to the outside or to a back row hitter? At this level, they should be able to run variations of this during specific rotations. The whole idea being, to avoid the stuff or roof blocks at the net. (my apologies to coach Wade).

  38. Slugger February 11, 2012 11:28 am

    Good morning, gang!

Interesting connection for Lacy and Chow…Lyle was an outstanding QB for Waialua while I was in HS, so I remember him well. I believe Chow coached Lyle at Waialua if I recall correctly. Chow surely keeps things within a tight circle, that’s for sure.

Since Wahine Softball has started (Congrats on the great season start!) and ST was covering Softball in 2007, I was reading the archives on this day. Maybe I’ll post his live blog coverage from RWSS later today. ST was on a roll that day and he zinged DPK and I…but, I found the origin of the Tsai-ko 5 F’s by Long Time UH Fan…

Thank you, ST, for hosting us, informing us, teasing us, feeding us, and keeping our Warrior Football Fever alive.

” Re: So who are the future stars in Hawaii HS football

jus got word that UH offered a scholarship to AIEA DE UALESI SALE. he’s also getting recruited from numerous Pac-12 schools, but UH is the first to offer him a full ride. he would be a great addition to the Warriors. he has the height, speed, and motor to be a great pass rusher at the next level. jus gotta bulk up a little. Sale and Correa are the best defensive ends in the 2013 class and it would be huge if UH can snag these 2. “

    RiP, Whitney Houston. Wow.

    Way to go, Wahine!!!

  59. jkjones February 11, 2012 4:04 pm

Leisha Li’ilii will be owning wahine stadium once her bat develops timing. Today she cranked a drive on the line over the right field fence just a foot foul of the pole as it whizzed by. The ball was still in flight and headed for the batting cage when the ump signaled foul. Next time up she hit an inside pitch with nothing on the swing and popped a high blooper lazily over the right field fence. Even when she isnt trying, the balls she hits seem to be destined to go at least 200 feet. The power she exhibits with the wield of her bat is apparent. If she learns to be patient at the plate, opposing outfielders will be sitting on the fence with mango pole nets!!

  60. jkjones February 11, 2012 4:05 pm

    rightfield=leftfield

  61. jkjones February 11, 2012 4:07 pm

*leisha popped a HR over the leftfield fence.

  62. Teacher February 11, 2012 4:11 pm

It’s Lacey, not Lacy. She was my student and has always known she wanted to have a career in the athletic field. Her background in sports and law makes her the perfect candidate for Chow’s team. Proud of her accomplishments!

  63. jkjones February 11, 2012 4:24 pm

Kaia Parnaby mixes her pitches well, hits her locations in and out and looks improved.

her sis, Lauren, is easy to spot, she has ehu hair. i mean bright ehu hair.

Sharla parked one into deep into centerfield that landed in the tennis courts. she’s back!

Sarah Robinson is making consistent contact with the bat and while it’s still early, if she continues, her bat will give the wahine added firepower in the middle of the order.

Kayla Wartner is the real deal.

She looks like a veteran behind the plate and is very composed.

She is a legit hitter with a good eye for the strike zone and has fast hands. What a get for Coolen!

  64. jkjones February 11, 2012 4:30 pm

Thanx teacher. Stick around–the name spelling on this blogsite should keep you here 24/7.

Malika Dudley sang the National Anthem at a women’s basketball game, IIRC, earlier in the season. She did well!

Exciting game at the softball stadium. I signed up for the Dollars for Dingers and Kokua for K’s and, oh, my! Here we go!

#91, yeah Kekoa, we were in the stands cheering for Seattle after it was 14 zip in the 2nd inning. Coolen put in subs for the rest of the game. Valuable playing time for the girls. The championship game was fraught with questionable calls, never saw so many illegal pitches in one game, the DePaul coach was yapping until a certain Tsaiko calmed him down. GO WAHINE!!! 5-0 baby!

Yeah slow night. Even the Nike spam took off.

  103. jm2375 February 11, 2012 10:27 pm

Congrats to the MBB and Wahine softballers! Good crowds at both games. Hope the Wahine bballers can get back on track ASAP!

Ummmm, what’s the record for the number of times the WAC refs were boo’d in a game? Once again, some really questionable calls. What’s with calling a double foul after the review? It was either a charge or a blocking foul. How could it be both? 😈

Nice to see chawan and his orange jacket. Maybe UH can give out large pieces of orange cloth to the students. Better yet, bring back the balloon brigade!!!!!

Congratulations to Mililani High School Boys Soccer for winning the 13th OIA Championship in 19 years in the Coach Yamamoto era.

Congrats to the basketbows and the Wahine softball teams,

Yes, a slow night. So, besides the 5 F’s being established on this date…here’s another hunk of blogdom…

okay, guys, i just came from 21 market. when we first walked in i was rather disappointed, i thought i was to see a line 20 deep to purchase some poke. but. none. anyway, there sat three empty ss bowls in the case. i sheepishly asked, “got poke?”

the old filipino lady says, “oh yeah got poke.”

the chinese lady appears out of nowhere and says, “we make em fresh for you.”

we end with shoyu style and limu poke. we go home and excitedly peel open the lids to the plastic containers. oh yeah, the bugga was mean as all you guys said.

i might have to go back tomw. i think i forgot a pound or two.

    hahahaha. just made my sunday.

    I withdraw my “love” comment.

Since all of you have been dying to know, Nebraska leads UH, 5-4, in the bottom of the fourth in softball.

    UH has committed six errors.

And Nebraska’s softball media guide is almost as thick as the UH football guide.

    02/11/07 @ 11:43

    Comment from: Stephen [Member]

    Softball is great.

    It’s free.

    They sell chili.

And fans can hang out with UH football players and coaches. Shoji was here last night.

Davone Bess, Ryan Grice-Mullins and some other players usually stop by after workouts.

Tara Hittle was here yesterday. Her foot is still in a cast.

    02/11/07 @ 11:49

Tyleen Tausaga just hit a two-run homer to give UH the lead, 6-5, in the bottom of the fifth.

Stephen (now speaking in the third person) will be eating a chili plate during the next pitching change.

    02/11/07 @ 12:05

    Comment from: al [Visitor]

stephen, do you also cover softball? or are you just there for the chili? or are you just waiting for leon to leave jj’s office?

    02/11/07 @ 12:09

    Comment from: Stephen [Member]

    Yep, I’m covering softball.

    Well, when I can.

It started on a whim, and then I realized, this is fun.

Comment from: Da Punchbowl Kid [Visitor]

Al we have baked chicken breasts, salad and baked potatoes for dindin. Turkey BLTs for lunch. But we’d trade it all for some:

we’ll be having some chicken enchiladas. green tomatillo sauce, cheeses, some frijoles refritos, and of course al’s famous salsa. maybe, some green chile stew with green chiles, anaheim peppers, serrano chiles, and of course hawaiian red hots. not to mention some flat iron steaks simmered in all this hotness. makes your head sweat but its worth it.

Tsai has my number al, in case you find out that you have overcooked and need some emergency guest eaters.

    02/11/07 @ 12:23

Comment from: Da Punchbowl Kid [Visitor]

I’m waiting by my phone, al.

    Comment from: Esme [Visitor]

Stephen, did you do that wacky shout-out just to lure me into reading your blog? You so off. Plus, waste time — I’m already a fan.

Plus, I can’t ever be your boss, for these reasons: 1) I’ve seen you in a sumo costume, 2) I’ve seen you dance, 3) I cannot get that “Tsai-Master”/ThighMaster image out of my head (thanks to one of your blog fans who made that up last week!), and 4) you’re a wordsmith bad-ss, so what would be the point?

Folks, am I right? Let the Stephen Love-Fest begin anew! Ste-phen! Ste-phen! Ste-phen!

    02/11/07 @ 14:34

    Comment from: Stephen [Member]

Esme failed to mention that I wore a sumo outfit — without padding.

    02/11/07 @ 14:37

    Comment from: al [Visitor]

cannot do this without the kid. he’s driving about palolo trying to find my house with his nose in the air.

but, we haven’t started cooking yet. plus, idk if he likes our chicken since we use thighs and not breasts.

bull, you go feed the beast lots of soyu beans.

    ok, back to the list.

    02/11/07 @ 14:42

Comment from: Da Punchbowl Kid [Visitor]

    Hey al,

Breasts, thighs, it’s all good to me, so feel free to make that call. Got that? Breast, thighs, okay, but hold the Tsais please.

Gigi, you so sweet for inviting me to da blog party. Sounds some ‘ono, with all the talk of poke and chicken and so on. You guys know how fo’ grine! Only thing is, my diet, my diet …

All this talk of food on a sports blog. I say again: You guys really know how to do this right!

See, Stephen, what kind of trouble you get me into.

    Comment from: al [Visitor]

like beasts of prey the “beat bloggers” are laying in wait for the day’s posting. carousing about waiting for the entry and news to flash. did he or didn’t he, the kid ponders about “neon” leon “action” wright(on)-jackson weekend trip. bulla is in the corner eating his leftover poke and poi, enough of the bucca salad he thinks. bring me some real food. gigi, is wondering which “friend” to call for her “complimentary meal of the day”, will it be a simple luncheon at the pineapple room or the infamous bubbling tofu soup. meanwhile, al and annadahdave go visit cat, only to find she is no longer talking about food, but, more on the subject of “fun”. although most of it is “confidential”. lucky guys dave and me thinks.

    sorry. just bored again.

i wonder what happened to “las vegas” he’s been MIA for a few days. maybe he found the 24/7 buffet at the MGM?

    02/12/07 @ 09:36

Only 157 blog comments on Feb. 11. 2007.

But difficult to pick only a few that day.

Had to omit DPK’s farm animal descriptions and Bulla’s “da-loose” chickens too. 🙂
