It’s great that Jeramy Bryant, Spencer Smith, Mana Silva and Laupepa Letuli will play as graduate students in the fall.

A-Joe  reports that Ed Fountain, an OBF (original blog friend), passed away yesterday. Ed was a good guy, and we’ll miss him.

* * * * *

Erika Buder-Nakasone is leaving UH, where she has served in many capacities — board member of Letter Winners Club, administrative assistant to the UH associate athletic director, cheerleader, cheerleader coach, etc. — to take a position at Punahou School.

We’ll miss her. She’s just a great person.

Now, a big reward to the person who can find a video of the cheerleaders, led by Erika and Vanessa, doing the “Happy And You Know” It dance.

Abraham Elimimian, a former UH cornerback who served as Crenshaw High defensive coordinator last year, will join SMU as a graduate assistant.

OK, we need a contest.

How about two tickets to tomorrow’s baseball game.

The magic words are: Thanks for the memories, Erika.

Avis picks a winner tonight.

    Hey Al,

Can you give me some clarification on the MBB recruiting. So you’re saying that even if we get Salters we might still get a another D1 transfer (who is not Andre Almeida)?

Al, also can you confirm that this weekend it’s Salters and Josten Thomas or is somebody else here?

    Thanks for all you do.

And, a special hello and get well wish to Florida Ted!!! A true gentleman who we had the pleasure of meeting in Orlando during the Florida gators trip. He drove all the way from Clearwater, an hour 1 and 1/2 hour drive, just to meet the A-Houses and Bighilofan2 and his family. Joining our group was K Mark Takai, our fellow Tsaiko in the State Legislature and alnbama who drove from Huntsville, AL for the game. Great food at Golden Corral!!!

  25. Garret May 15, 2010 8:58 am

Best wishes to Abraham Elimimian! I hope that this is a start of an excellent coaching career for him.

  26. Committed Road Warrior May 15, 2010 9:09 am

    Hi A-House!
Hope you and the rest of the gang are doing well! I know we’re about to head into the doldrums of college sports, but the start of next football season is closer than I realize.

I’m anxiously looking forward to the first slate of football road games.

I don’t know if anyone noticed, but the NFL Broncos have a home game against the Seahawks on Sept. 19, the day after the UH-Colorado game in Boulder. Just an FYI for those who are staying in the Denver area for some appreciable time after the game….

  27. SteveM May 15, 2010 9:11 am

    Good morning everyone!

Glad to see Abraham Elimimian adding D1 experience to his coaching resume with an opportunity from his former coaches…and continuing his education.

    GO WAHINE !!!

  29. oldie May 15, 2010 9:24 am

Anyone not in Hawaii want access to my Slingbox?

It will allow you to watch anything on the non-premium Oceanic channels. Can setup to watch KFVE. You would need to install free Sling software on your PC and have my access code.

Sorry for offering so late in the UH season.

    Let me know…

  30. al May 15, 2010 9:27 am

    congratulations abe….
but, does this mean we won’t be getting the third elimimian brother?

  32. Maverick May 15, 2010 9:30 am

    Oldie,
You can be the most popular guy come Football season with that Slingbox.

    :>

  33. Ralph May 15, 2010 9:30 am

Al June is one step ahead. Now he has a contact and a person with knowledge of south central LA area

  34. oldie May 15, 2010 9:35 am

    MaverIck,

Only problem is we only subscribe to the away games since we have season tickets…

Also I currently don’t have the Slingbox connected to the settop that would be authorized for the premium channels.

  35. protector May 15, 2010 9:37 am

    Congrats to Abraham Elimimian!

I wonder if it means he has a shot at being an assistant coach there in the near future? If not, then wouldn’t it be better to stay as a DC at a high profile high school? Just wondering.

  36. oldie May 15, 2010 9:44 am

Biggest problem with the Slingbox is only one user can be connected at any moment in time. That’s to prevent folks from trying to avoid paying the premium fees.

  37. Ralph May 15, 2010 9:50 am

Protector a Master degree from SMU will open more doors and financial security than a DC credential at a HS. He gets a MS or MA degree, college coaching experience for 2 years, now he has options-continue coaching if the right offer is made, or join the work force with his masters degree.

  38. Slugger May 15, 2010 9:52 am

Congrats to Elimimian on the GA at SMU!

Anyone going to UH graduation today?

  45. expat May 15, 2010 10:16 am

    Howzit A-House,

Just got into Boston for a couple of days of work. Was in Seattle yesterday and had three separate trips to Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island the past two weeks. One more trip to Seattle next week when I get back from Boston and then hopefully pau for a while.

All this travel is exhausting and it is ticking off the wife.

  46. Ralph May 15, 2010 10:19 am

  52. LizKauai (iPhone) May 15, 2010 10:45 am

God Bless and condolences to the Fountain Ohana. Mahalo and good luck, Erika!

So my guess is that The Wahine are giving the Fresnecks time to anticipate Ricketts and saving Parnaby for a change of pace?

Or just let Steph wake up as the game progresses. Anyway. I promise to stop watching if it gets intense. 😆

    GO SOFTBOWS!!

  53. Slugger May 15, 2010 11:09 am

    Thanks for the memories, Erika.

Did Don Weir send you a picture of the graduates this morning, ST?

  54. PowderPuff May 15, 2010 11:14 am

Congratulations to the UH graduates today…it’s your turn to make the world a better place. Congrats also Erika and Abraham. I had my first taste of Krispy Kremes in the early ’90s along Crenshaw Boulevard! 🙂

  55. Don Weir May 15, 2010 11:27 am

Erika was the hard worker behind the scenes for many years: Executive Director of the Letterwinners Club and information guru for UHAD. She will be sorely missed by UHLWC and everyone who interacts with UHAD.
Anyone who is in touch with Kale Ane over at Punahou needs to request and hour off early for Erika the third Tuesday of the month so Erika can still continue her outstanding work with UHLWC for the support of all of our student/athletes & Letterwinners.

Slugger, I am waiting for the camera battery to charge to send over the pictures to the computer and then on to Senor Tsai.

By the way, mahalo to Kelly McGill and the staff at Tikis for the Cinco de Mayo celebration. We raised over $500 for UH Athletics.

  77. Ralph May 15, 2010 12:04 pm

14 runners left on the bases tell the tale of why we came out short, but the Na Wahine will come out fighting in the championship game. Iwata had a downer, stranded 8 runners, but she got to snap and forget this game and re-energize for the championship game.

  78. Slugger May 15, 2010 12:05 pm

So we get to watch more softball today. Go Wahine!

I haven’t heard from Kazz for quite a while, he texted, he had a restless night, couldn’t sleep, I wonder if he crashed. the down side, boss calls him in the work at the last minute. if he had to work, there is one habut, hyper fan out in Hawaii Kai as I write.

  88. BG May 15, 2010 12:28 pm

Just stopped by for a few minutes to make sure we didn’t have to put anyone on suicide watch! Kazz, you OK? Remember, what really counts is how you pick yourself up after being knocked down. BELIEVE in Na Wahine and send the positive vibes!

  91. chopsueyboy May 15, 2010 12:49 pm

    GO WAHINES!

  92. 99club May 15, 2010 12:53 pm

    Game’s on at 1:00 p.m. HST, 8:00 a.m. Sunday in Korea.

  93. papajoe2 May 15, 2010 12:55 pm

i was out all day and just caught the last out on the radio. UH left 14 runners on base? did coach hold up any of the runners at 3rd base again? also i noticed during yesterday’s game that Iwata has a similar batting stance as Kelley. the difference is Kelley’s step is forward or in the middle of the batter’s box, thus stepping into the ball. Iwata’s step is toward the left of the batter’s box, thus would have a hard time with outside pitches. anything not outside, she makes good contact though. did anybody notice this during this morning’s game? GO WAHINE!!!!!

  94. 99club May 15, 2010 12:57 pm

I seem to remember checking earlier this month and seeing the WAC tourney would be a selection on ESPN3 (formerly ESPN360) but that’s not the case. No matter, I actually like listening to baseball/softball on the radio. Thanks 1420 am!

  95. Ralph May 15, 2010 12:58 pm

yup, they threw her all outside pitches. FO to rightside, PO to second or first, slow roller to the pitcher

  96. Ralph May 15, 2010 1:01 pm

with all of UH’s hrs, I don’t why the opposing pitchers don’t pitch down and out most of the time, and risers on the outside. Most of UH’s home runs have been the the left-center power alley.

  97. Ralph May 15, 2010 1:03 pm

it’s 1 pm HST, the girls should be wide awake, time to stump on the doggies.

  105. Ralph May 15, 2010 1:11 pm

Yee didn’t get any today in Ga Tech’s mercy rule win over NC. Danielle Spaulding of North Carolina struck 11 in 4.2 inning but gave up 8 runs. She got 11 of the 14 outs on K’s.

  106. Ralph May 15, 2010 1:12 pm

  133. Ralph May 15, 2010 1:35 pm

great accolade to coach Margie Wright, FSU, her teams reached a regional every year she coached, she has the longest consecutive regional appearance of any active coaches.

  134. troll May 15, 2010 1:35 pm

  136. LizKauai (iPhone) May 15, 2010 1:37 pm

  137. Slugger May 15, 2010 1:37 pm

    GO WAHINE!!!!

This is the way we know you can play.

  138. papajoe2 May 15, 2010 1:42 pm

  139. d1島 May 15, 2010 1:42 pm

  140. d1島 May 15, 2010 1:43 pm

  143. LizKauai (iPhone) May 15, 2010 1:45 pm

Congrats to the Warrior Graduates! Good job, Coach Mack and crew! Mahalo Don Weir!

  144. RupertDaStupert May 15, 2010 1:46 pm

I am suffering the ravages of PTSD from fighting for my country. Very few things pleasure me. Anyone who knows about PTSD can understand what I mean. Last night I enjoyed watching the baseball team play. A real pleasure. Now after the first game loss, watching the wahine softball team beating Fresno State in the second game. What a pleasure to see great athletes play so outstandingly. Kelly Majam is amazing! So is the rest of the team.. I wish there was a triple header. Sports is the great equalizer. It does amazing things to ones spirits. Charlie Wade and the amazing men’s volleyball team. Bob Coolen and his outstanding job with the rainbow wahine softball. Mike Trepasso, one of the finest recruiters in the country. Greg McMackin, a great person person and teacher of the game. Dave Shoji, a master genius at work. etc. Thanks for relieving my PTSD. And Gib..Gib em Gib!

  145. Ralph May 15, 2010 1:47 pm

two games, don’t hear from Kazz, and he likes the 5 hr pick me up drink. He must be climbing the walls, his mom is all upset, too much screaming.

  146. Ralph May 15, 2010 1:50 pm

yup at home they were ahead of FSU by 6 and lost the game with Parnaby pitching. Got to remain focused, it’s not over, till it’s over.

  147. Ralph May 15, 2010 1:52 pm

lots of foul balls to the right field foul line, cuz Melloh is pitching outside and our girls are trying to pull them. Go with the pitch, so far Rodriquez has been going with the flow to the oppositie field.

  148. koakane iPhone May 15, 2010 1:52 pm

Keep pounding dem dogs, keep scoring, pour it on and leave no dout

  149. d1島 May 15, 2010 1:55 pm

    Ralph,

    Sorry, I like koakane’s analysis better! 😆

  150. duffer (iPhone) May 15, 2010 1:58 pm

    11-0 UH, 4th inning, top

  154. Slugger May 15, 2010 2:00 pm

  156. Ralph May 15, 2010 2:01 pm

  157. 99club May 15, 2010 2:01 pm

    We get chance.

  158. Slugger May 15, 2010 2:01 pm

Is it the 4th inning? Ralph?

  159. LizKauai (iPhone) May 15, 2010 2:01 pm

Hahaha. It’s the bottom of the third.

  160. Ralph May 15, 2010 2:02 pm

we’re regular season champs, number one seed, and twice we are the visitors against FSU, how you figga.

  161. papajoe2 May 15, 2010 2:03 pm

    another great catch by Majam.

  162. LizKauai (iPhone) May 15, 2010 2:03 pm

  163. d1島 May 15, 2010 2:03 pm

  164. LizKauai (iPhone) May 15, 2010 2:04 pm

    Coin toss, Ralph.

  165. Slugger May 15, 2010 2:04 pm

    Coin flip…radio explained that.

  166. PowderPuff May 15, 2010 2:05 pm

d1 – “interesting” PSA, eh? Pretty effective, just wondering why they chose a Toyota 4Runner?!?! DOH! 🙂

Keep slugging away ladies…you look awesome!

  167. LizKauai (iPhone) May 15, 2010 2:05 pm

As the announcer says”we play three and it’s all Hawaii”.

  168. BleedGreen808 May 15, 2010 2:05 pm

This announcer isn’t a homer at all. He’s honest.

  169. papajoe2 May 15, 2010 2:05 pm

Kazz, you got me worried. i hope everything is alright. where you?

  170. 99club May 15, 2010 2:06 pm

    Ralph,

The radio announcers must have seen your post. Just heard it was a coin flip that decided who was home/visitors today.

  171. d1島 May 15, 2010 2:07 pm

    PowderPuff,

Cause the Tundra was going too fast!

  172. duffer (iPhone) May 15, 2010 2:08 pm

    Mahalo! Doing some marketing. 🙂

  173. d1島 May 15, 2010 2:08 pm

    99club,

Interesting. Why no switch for Game 2, I wonder?

  174. Slugger May 15, 2010 2:09 pm

    12-0!

    Alright Traci!!!

  175. papajoe2 May 15, 2010 2:09 pm

Slugger, i know its a coin flip, but why even have a coin flip if you are the #1 seed. i can see for the last game because we lost the first champ. game, but even then, we are the WAC regular season champions, and top seed. as i write this, another homerun. this time by Yoshikawa.

  176. koakane iPhone May 15, 2010 2:11 pm

    Keep pounding

  177. BleedGreen808 May 15, 2010 2:11 pm

    #139 Home Run

  178. Slugger May 15, 2010 2:11 pm

I got a text from Kazz before the game that said he was tossing ‘n turning all night. I’m sure he’s watching, as well as screaming & jumping up & down. I just hope he didn’t have to work today…

  179. d1島 May 15, 2010 2:13 pm

    Slugger,

That wouldn’t be good if he was working the “New Accounts” desk! 😯

  180. Ralph May 15, 2010 2:14 pm

a coin flip gives FSU 50% chance of being the home team, but aren’t we, UH, deserving because we are the number one seed, WAC regular season champs.

  181. Slugger May 15, 2010 2:14 pm

I guess I’m not going to have time to make almond float for our family get-together tonight…

    GO WAHINE!!!

  182. 99club May 15, 2010 2:14 pm

    d1-

They just explained that one before I read your post, but can’t remember their explanation. Too many Avery Ellie’s Brown Ales. 🙂

(Planning on the brewery tour in Boulder). 😉

  183. PowderPuff May 15, 2010 2:14 pm

Haha, d1! I saw that PSA for the first time last night and said, “Hey, hey now…4Runner drivers are safe!” Now the Tundra ones…hhhhmmmm. 🙂

    Happy marketing, duffer!!!

  184. Ralph May 15, 2010 2:15 pm

come on Kaia, 4 more outs, mercy rule again.

  185. Slugger May 15, 2010 2:16 pm

WAC Tournament rules are strange. Pomai can tell you…

  186. 99club May 15, 2010 2:16 pm

OK, now I’m sure they’re reading your posts, Ralph! Just ref’d 4 more defensive outs.

  187. koakane iPhone May 15, 2010 2:16 pm

Show no mercy take no prisoners

  188. Slugger May 15, 2010 2:17 pm

  197. papajoe2 May 15, 2010 2:23 pm

#195 for=forgot. homer threw me off. but not as much as the puppies. hahaha

  198. LizKauai (iPhone) May 15, 2010 2:23 pm

    Wahine are so focused. Awesome.

  199. Slugger May 15, 2010 2:24 pm

Haven’t had time to be in the kitchen to make a salad…so I’m eating food that I’d eat in the ball park. Not quite like being there, but my stomach is getting the same feel. Chips, sausage & tea…

    Go WAHINE!!!

  200. 99club May 15, 2010 2:24 pm

Have to agree with others who posted earlier, this announcer is doing a great job.

  201. papajoe2 May 15, 2010 2:25 pm

fresno needs 7 runs with 3 outs to make it a normal game.

  202. LizKauai (iPhone) May 15, 2010 2:26 pm

The sun is in their eyes. Bottom of the 5th. Defense!

  203. RupertDaStupert May 15, 2010 2:26 pm

Thank you LizKauai, that’s very nice of you to say. I am a lurker. After Gib got hired, I had nothing to gripe about, LOL. Just amazing, the rainbow wahine softball team. Kelly Majam is “The Natural”. Roy Hobbs come to life! This team is such a joy!

  204. Ralph May 15, 2010 2:28 pm

at least you’ll have 3 beers to celebrate with during the awards ceremony

  205. Slugger May 15, 2010 2:29 pm

    Before I forget,

    Thanks for the memories, Erika.

  206. LizKauai (iPhone) May 15, 2010 2:29 pm

    Let’s go, Kaia!
Oops Jessica is not clean out there.
Cmon Dee! 2 on. No outs.

  207. BleedGreen808 May 15, 2010 2:30 pm

    Kaia is one striking machine

  208. papajoe2 May 15, 2010 2:30 pm

noticed the last few games she pitched, Kaia got hit pretty bad from the 5th inning on. maybe she needs more conditioning or focus. no way frensing will win.

  209. Ralph May 15, 2010 2:30 pm

one out before the celebration begins!

  210. Slugger May 15, 2010 2:31 pm

Thank you Slugger and LizKauai. I lost my case worker when the state cut funds in Thanksgiving 2008. You ever watch Adrian Monk? You noticed how he always needed a assistant companion “Sharonna Fleming” and “Natalie Teager” to be able to function? That’s what I need, an outreach case worker. HMSA is trying to help me. But the rainbow wahine softball team provided me with that with wonderful ball playing today. I wish there was another game. I want to see more of them. Like I said, I am more a lurker. You guys are the good text talkers. Anyone out ther want to be my Sharonna Fleming? LOL. Take care. Sports is not only great, it’s a great healer of souls. Gib em Gib, if you no gib em, who we going gib em too?

The ones the girls got were just generic ones. No UH design, nothing. Keep an eye out at UH Rainbowtique maybe or WACsports.com in the merchandise section within the week.

LSU freshman pitcher had 26 perfect games in high school in Conneticut along with over 1,800 strikeouts and won over 100 games while losing only 3. Plays mostly as a relief pitcher for LSU.Just gave up a homer to Alabama. Some of those ladies(?) are huge. No worry. They will fall.

    at the ncaa’s…

we can’t be swinging away at 3-0 pitches with the game on the line and we need runners or even if we have a huge lead with bases loaded, full count, and two out.

we will be playing champions from around the country and in softball(baseball) anything could happen and it ain’t over until the last out is made.

  262. BleedGreen808 May 15, 2010 3:06 pm

So does this mean the UHAD will pay for a banner at the softball field or will Pomai have to find funds for that too?

  263. Kazz May 15, 2010 3:07 pm

  264. Kazz May 15, 2010 3:10 pm

    BG808,

There is no banner at the softball stadium. There are these large billboard type things in the outfield corners listing the years the Wahine won the WAC title and made regional appearances.

There is another billboard thing out there too that lists the Lousiville Slugger All Americans that played for UH.

The Alabama-LSU game is on ESPN. They have the outfield fences an 190 down the lines. Announcers said they will move the fences back 10 feet to 200 down the lines and 220 in center for the NCAA tournament. Isn’t our softball stadium 200 down the lines? They said the tournament will be more interesting with more triples and doubles, and sliding and diving attempts in the outfield. Am I missing something? Sounds like the same announcers who did the Fresno-LTech game and was dissing our charge to the homerun record.

I am in agreeance. Not sure how he does it especially with this font.

  271. al May 15, 2010 3:18 pm

kendall…i think we will get salters. not too many options available like hawaii for this young man. may 19 is the end of the binding loi’s.

in addition, word on the street is we may be getting another d1 transfer. it looks bleak for us getting that giant because of his binding loi. but, there are a lot of transfers out there who although would have to sit out a year could add to the following season. i’d take a 4 or 5 at this point because we lose two of them next year.

  272. BleedGreen808 May 15, 2010 3:19 pm

Yeah, Kazz, I think it is only fitting that the wahines get one BIG billboard for this one since this is the first WAC Tournament Championship for the softball team. There’s gotta be a first time for everything.

Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium is 200ft down the lines and 200ft at center. Equal all around.

If it sounds like a duck, quacks like a duck, and is as arrogant as mainland announcers then most likely they’re jerks.

They still ONLY believe that REAL softball is played in the PAC 10 or SEC, as of late. Anything a mid major does is doo doo to them and anything a team from an island in the middle of the Pacific does is never legitimate.

    Same ole crap, different sport.

The Wahine only scored two homers in that 16-1 rout of FSU yesterday and if you’ve watched them all year long, singles and doubles and a small handful of triples have added to the 400+ runs scored by the Wahine this season.

We most likely will NOT hit as many homers in the NCAAs as we did in WAC and preseason competition and the ONLY reason is… THE PITCHING.

The opposing pitching will be better for sure and Coach Coolen knows this. Better pitch selection by our batters would help a lot.

BUT, I can guarantee you one thing… The slaps in the face by the media folk WILL NEVER end until we win the National Championship. I can BET my life that if we make it all the way to the College World Series of Softball, the FIRST thing they will try to do is to look at how many homers we hit in the NCAAs as opposed to our non conference and conference seasons this year.

They’ll look for ways to make us look as weak as possible until they run out of ideas, but the STUPIDITY never seems to end.

Katie Grimes said in her on line diary that she loves to be hated. Well there is a difference between being hated and not being respected no matter what you do.

  285. Ralph May 15, 2010 4:10 pm

Papajoe2 the ESPN announcers are not down playing UH homers or its program. They have acknowledged the good year UH is having. Jessica Mendoza is a former all american and USA olympic player, Michelle Smith, also an olympian and pitched professional in Japan. They have been saying that with the change in ball construction and change in bat to weight differential the game has changed, became a hitters game. They mentioned that her 8 homers at one time was a big deal, those were the days of the pitcher dominated conferences. Moving the fences back to 200 would help the pitchers, which they agree, and a large outfield allows for more defensive plays, more doubles to the gap, etc.

  286. Ralph May 15, 2010 4:11 pm

    Alabama wins the SEC tournament.

  287. protector May 15, 2010 4:18 pm

I’m speechless at what the Wahine have accomplished. It seems they experienced a brown-out in the 3rd game, but then the “power” was restored.
Spectacular season!! Hope they don’t get sent across the country out of spite.

Someone sent me via e-mail (and the rest of the Tsaikos) a blurb about social security.

Suggest that they better check http://www.snopes.com/politics/socialsecurity/cola.asp first.

Although I thought that I was on the e-mail list, I never received anything like this over the past 24 hours or so.

Normally, I wouldn’t care but we’d like to be kept apprised when it comes time to collect donations for the Softbows’ bracelets as well as the awards event. If there are two e-mail lists, then please use the bigger one.

Another question concerning the event – will it be open to all fans or just Tsai-kos? Over the years, we’ve sat with half a dozen people who’ve been at most of the games – rain or shine. I’m sure they’d love to attend, but I know they’re not Tsai-kos and I have no way of contacting them.

Looking forward to the final home game of the 2010 baseball season tomorrow.

  293. papajoe2 May 15, 2010 4:30 pm

Ralph, #285 they were before we blasted the homerun record. they talked about the small fields that we played on. i did notice that they kind of changed their attitude on it in today’s game. maybe because we beat the previous record by 6?, and still counting. they have to agree that the record is for real as we beat a PAC 10 team’s record (record means we beat everybody else too). that’s why i chuckeled when i saw that the SEC tournament championship field was 190 down the lines. all is good though as everyone who makes the tournament stands a chance.

Doc if any event is put on for the Na Wahine by us you will be told of it and as far as I’m concerned it would be open to anyone in the entire US to come to if they want. It would be to celebrate and honor the Na Wahine.

  298. Ralph May 15, 2010 4:43 pm

papajoe2 all the fields I’ve seen on tv are usually 200 down the lines, same as UH, its at cf that others are at 220 or 225, but that’s it. I don’t think they singled out UH’s field compared to the pac 10, but there is definitely a difference in the caliber of pitchers in both leagues. the radar gun on the SEC tournament showed the SEC pitchers hitting the 60 to 66 ranges, not any better that Ricketts, Parnaby, Krieg, etc., it’s just that the WAC doesn’t have quality pitchers like these on every team.

  299. Kazz May 15, 2010 4:43 pm

I couldn’t hear who made what on the WAC All Tourney Team.

I believe Kelly Majam won the WAC Tourney MVP.

Personally, I think Katie Grimes, should have won it. That play we all saw today of her blocking the plate is routine for her and her leadership throughout is one thing that will always be overlooked and of course she performed very well during the tournament behind the plate and on top of it.

  300. Pomai May 15, 2010 4:44 pm

Well Kazz it looks like we made it to second, now we need to bring it all the way to home. Both you an I knew from the beginning they could do it.

If the tennis courts weren’t in the way, I’d donate more to move our center field fence to at least 220.

Then maybe some people would shut up.

Might be cheaper to buy them a plane ticket to watch the Wahine in action instead of hearing about it from their Olympic friends… 🙄

  308. Garret May 15, 2010 5:30 pm

I hate to interrupt all the softball talk (great win by the Wahine!), but there is some David Veikune news to pass along…for those who do not follow the Browns, Jackson is a starting ILB with the Browns who is a restrictive free agent. The decision to have Veikune focus on just one position will help his development…but I wish it wasn’t at a position where the Browns have 5 experienced players already.

The point is, they have Bowens, Fujita, Gocong and Barton as experienced inside linebackers. They have decided to keep David Veikune exclusively at inside linebacker. They believe it was a mistake to play him at outside and inside linebacker, which they did early last season. Veikune was a rookie out of Hawaii, where he played defensive end. So there is no need to appease Jackson.

  309. NorthShoreFan May 15, 2010 5:33 pm

Good evening Tsaiko Nation, Erika Buder Nakasone who has been a BIG leader and supporter to Hawaii athletics will be miss TREMENDOUSLY by this writer !

I met Erika my first time coming back to Hawaii in 2000 as I was pointed in her direction to join the LWC as she was the “FIRST” wahine that I met after 19 years being away from you great folks of Hawaii Nei !

A truly professional young lady with an “ENORMOUS” talent to multitask many assignments and responsibilities to Hawaii athletic departments in which she has served admirably with adroitness and competence in her leadership position !

The LWC would not have the success today with out her dedication and leadership as she has served as it’s Executive Director overseeing membership to over 300 former UH athletes locally and world wide who admire and appreciates this kind, humorous and graceful young lady.

Punahou is getting an “OUTSTANDING” professional wahine as the LWC is losing a treasure and terrific administrator !

Erika will be HONORED at the end of this month as a reception will be given to her as I have donated along with others to make her FINAL farewell a memorable one for all who may have the privelage in attending !

Have a GREAT evening Tsaiko Nation and “THANK YOU” for Erika Buder Nakasone who repesents the Aloha Spirit and University Of Hawaii with “first class, dignity and respect” as I will truly miss her
warmth, professionalism and beautiful cheer !

  316. BleedGreen808 May 15, 2010 6:32 pm

Here’s what Coach Bob Coolen said about all the reason for the HRs

The Rainbow Wahine have hit 128 home runs in 53 games this season. They have a minimum of four more games — and many more in all probability — to come up with the seven home runs needed to break the NCAA single-season mark Arizona set last season.

Of course, as was the case for Arizona, the surge in power has been accompanied by a bit of skepticism and a few whispers about just how a team can go from hitting 110 home runs over the past two seasons combined to the current prodigious production. Are the bats hot? No hotter than they have been, offered coach Bob Coolen.

“A lot of people are going to question how we’re doing it,” Coolen said. “We’re using Easton products. We’ve had the Easton product for the past 15 years. We are using bats that … no one has ever said these are illegal bats. No one has ever said these bats tested hot, or we would have taken them out of circulation.”

In explaining the increased production, it’s worth noting that the Rainbow Wahine have benefited from top hitters returning to the lineup. Three of the team’s top sluggers didn’t play last season. Redshirt freshman Kelly Majam was injured, true freshman Jessica Iwata was in high school and junior Jenna Rodriguez was slugging better than .850 for Yavapai College. Those three have combined for 55 home runs this season, 25 by Majam.

And when volunteer coach and Hawaii mainstay John Nakamura retired after 23 years with the program last season, Coolen brought in Dickie Titcomb to fill the same position. A youth coach in the area with a long record of producing teams with good power numbers, Titcomb, along with first-year assistant and former Hawaii star Kaulana Williams, has helped stress the minute details — balance, focus, technique — of what still boils down to “see the ball, hit the ball” for Hawaii’s hitters.

“We work a lot on bat speed,” Coolen said. “So that’s why you have Kelly Majam, who swings the bat over 70 miles an hour, can hit the ball as far as she can hit the ball with a 5-foot-3 frame because she just has so much bat speed. Her hands go to the ball.”

Beyond all of that, this is a program that has long relied on its volunteer assistant coaching position and which faced university-mandated budget cuts in recent seasons.

    ST,

Is the softball team actually flying back home soon? Why can’t they stay on the mainland?

I know Coolen mentioned that if the NCAA had “tipped” they off as to what regional they may get invited too it would have been easier, but surely it can’t be a money issue as it would cost WAY more to fly to Hawaii and then back again.

Not to mention the REAL stress on the players.

BleedGreen808: Could you please explain what you’ve said. Are there 16 regionals made up of four teams each? Does the * mean the sead or the site? Is the regional a single or double-elimination tournament?

When I woke up this morning around 3 am, I spent time on the WAC, NCAA and UH websites and could not find any information about the next two rounds although there was some information about the World Series in Oklahoma.

    WDoc–

Check this website out… You will find it easier to understand rather than me trying to explain the bracket. Also, that post (#314) is just a projection from one site and the actual teams will be announced tomorrow at 4pm Hawaii time.

Mahalo Pomai…if and when just blow the whistle..

This discussion about homeruns and small parks, light air, etc….all nothing but BS…
Ball coming at you at 60-66 miles and hour needs to make contact with a bat. Some one needs to swing it and put the bat on the ball. If you look at the distance the homeruns travel, most if not all of them you’ve cleared 200 or 220 ft fence. All these pundits who are trying to minimize the accomplishment can go and bite…… something!

I don’t know if there is any No Clue At All regulations covering the dimensions, wind direction, altitude of the playing field etc…if there isn’t any then saddddduuuuppp!

    Ok pau rant….my patnah calling ….yes yobo, I’m coming….

    Re-Kenny Esquivel

Strength coach, UH Wahine softball team

Do you think his stock went up?

Seems like he did his job well.

Not much info that I can find on Kenny. The UH student paper in one interview list him as a graduate assistant strength coach.

For Kenny this is good stuff to put on his resume.

ST wrote an excellent article here.

    Iron-rich diet helps fuel Rainbows

For the Hawai’i softball team, the quest for the NCAA’s single-season home run record is lined with metal — from the weightlifting sessions to the lively aluminum bats.

It begins on Mondays, as it has since September, when strength coach Kenny Esquivel pushes the Rainbow Wahine to push heavy metal.

“He kicks our butt,” right fielder Kanani Pu’u-Warren said. “He gets under all of our skin, really pushing us.”

Third baseman Melissa Gonzalez, who has slammed 20 home runs this season, said each Monday is devoted to a cycle of full-body workouts, with an emphasis on Olympic-styled lifts such as squats, back-squats and power cleans.

“It’s nice to do it in the beginning of the week,” Gonzalez said. “It gives us time to get all of the soreness out by the weekend. It’s pretty good. It’s showing on the field.”

Indeed, the improved lower-body strength — “it starts with legs,” said Esquivel, who has worked in the Florida Marlins’ minor-league system — has been credited with the Rainbows’ power surge.

It is most evident in second-year freshman Kelly Majam’s swing. Majam, who bats left-handed, uses a two-tap approach. With the weight on her left foot, she will tap her front foot when the pitcher is in a set position, then a second time as soon as the pitch is released. Majam then will simultaneously shift her weight to the right foot while swinging. The full-bodied motion has helped Majam, who is only 5 feet 3, launch 25 home runs this season. She is tied for first nationally with an average of 0.47 homers per game.

In all, the Rainbows have hit 128 homers in 53 games. With at least four games remaining, the Rainbows have targeted the NCAA’s single-season record of 134, set by Arizona in 63 games in 2009.

“A couple of weeks ago, we didn’t think we could get it,” Majam said. “But now we see it’s in reach.”

The Rainbows will play a minimum of two games in this week’s double-elimination Western Athletic Conference Tournament in Las Cruces, N.M. At No. 15 in the NCAA’s ratings percentage index (RPI), the Rainbows are considered a lock for the Regionals the following week, giving them at least another two games.

“We’re definitely thinking about it,” Gonzalez said of the record. In a three-game sweep in Las Cruces last month, the Rainbows hit 12 home runs in 95 at-bats.

The Rainbows depart early tomorrow. They will pack 40 Easton bats, including 10 Stealth bats that they received in 2005 and 2006. While most things wear down in time, the two-piece Stealth bats become livelier with age.

“It takes a thousand good swings in a bat to get the right flexion mode, where the reboundability is where you want,” said UH head coach Bob Coolen, a neatnik who kept the bats. “These bats retain their liveliness.”

UH’s Stealth bats, which are never used in batting practice, meet the NCAA reboundability requirement of not having an exit speed exceeding 98 mph.

The NCAA tests only the equipment. It does not factor the hitter’s strength or bat speed. Majam’s swing, for instance, has been timed at about 74 mph; the fastest pitch usually does not exceed 70 mph. It is believed stronger players can generate more power even if the bat’s reboundability measures 98 mph or slower during testing.

Still, art is more important than science.

“We want to get base hits,” Majam said. “If we get home runs, fine.

  325. Garret May 15, 2010 8:40 pm

Very, very interesting feature article in the Idaho Statesman tomorrow that provides a lot of details about expansion that I hadn’t seen reported before.

Until yesterday, the WAC said that any team leaving could inform the WAC by 9/1. However, the WAC moved that up to 7/1 yesterday. So, we’ll know about any team leaving the WAC by next month.

Boise State must notify the WAC by July 1 to join the Mountain West in 2011-12. The Broncos need to move next year for the Mountain West to count their accomplishments toward BCS eligibility for the 2012 and 2013 football seasons.

The WAC provided the July 1 deadline Friday. Previously, league officials and the WAC website listed the deadline as Sept. 1.

  326. Garret May 15, 2010 8:43 pm

Note that they specifically state that if the MWC loses some teams they might invite Fresno State and Nevada. Some people probably heard the report today that said that BSU, Fresno State, and Houston were the 3 teams going to the MWC. The only thing the MWC needs to meet all the rules to become an AQ conference would be to boost its average computer ranking of their teams, and all 3 of those teams are well above the MWC’s average.

If the Mountain West loses a couple top teams, the league loses value. However, those teams could be replaced by upper-tier WAC programs such as Fresno State and Nevada – so the Mountain West still would be the better option.

The bigger concern is the Mountain West’s TV deal with the low-profile tandem of CBS College Sports and Versus. The league doesn’t play games on ESPN – but that could change in the near future. And as much as fans complain about the TV deal, it hasn’t hurt the ability of TCU, Utah and BYU to recruit and compete.

  327. Garret May 15, 2010 8:47 pm

Karl Benson led the WAC to adopt the new rule last year that capped the BCS payment to $3 million for any WAC school making a BCS bowl. The rest of the $9.5 million or so would go to the WAC. Any money left over from the $3 million would be profit for the school…but travel expenses come out of that money. When UH went to the Sugar Bowl, they got around $4.5 million and I think that expenses were around $3 million or more. So, UH would lose money if it made the Orange Bowl under the WAC’s new rule.

One thing that nobody noticed is that the new rule would give BSU *all* of its $3 million BCS payment even if they left the WAC! They would not leave ANY of that money behind like other conferences require…the WAC specifically says that they can keep their money!

What is the penalty for leaving the WAC?

Boise State would forfeit its share of WAC revenue for 2010-11 – about $1 million to $1.5 million. However, the Broncos still would get the $3 million bonus if they qualify for a BCS game, athletic director Gene Bleymaier said.

Some have suggested the WAC increase the penalty for leaving, but Bleymaier doesn’t expect that to happen.

  328. Garret May 15, 2010 8:48 pm

New Mexico’s President plans to vote for BSU to be invited.

New Mexico president David Schmidly recently told the Albuquerque Journal that he wants to invite Boise State.

“We’ve had lots of discussions, but no firm decisions,” he said. “I tend to be more aggressive in my thinking and not sit around and wait for things to happen to you. Go and do what you feel you need to do.”

  329. Garret May 15, 2010 8:52 pm

Ferd’s article the other day mentioned that teams leaving a conference would be leaving behind their BCS money and their NCAA tournament payout from the conference. I know that is how things are in the Big 12, Big East, and the other conferences rumored to be losing teams. However, the WAC gets basically the bare minimum from the NCAA tournament since no WAC team has won an NCAA tournament game in at least 4 years, so the big loss would be BCS money.

Every conference appears to have a significant penalty for a team leaving the conference EXCEPT the WAC. Not only is there not a big penalty, the new WAC rule apparently will let BSU keep *all* of their BCS money even if they leave the WAC. Wow. Karl Benson sure looks out for BSU…

Heinz is changing its ketchup recipe for the first time in 40 years, lowering its salt content to appeal to more health-conscious consumers. They have 60% of the ketchup market right now and it will be interesting to see if consumers reject the taste or do not even notice.

  331. Garret May 15, 2010 8:56 pm

Study found that home sellers should not have their asking price end in a round number because people aren’t used to discussing large numbers with precision so our brains play tricks on us. For example, the study found that people judged $510,000 to be slightly *higher* than $511,534 and they saw $400,000 as a lot higher than $401,298! Studies already found that consumers like prices slightly lower than a round number ($9.95 or $9.99 instead of $10), but I never realized that RAISING the price above a round number also worked!

The Minerals Management Service gave permission to BP and dozens of other oil companies to drill in the Gulf of Mexico without first getting required permits from another agency that assesses threats to endangered species. This includes the approval for the well drilled by the Deepwater Horizon rig which is spilling thousands of barrels of oil each day. Scientists say that they had repeatedly had their scientific findings changed to indicate no environmental impact or had their calculations of spill risks downgraded.

  334. Garret May 15, 2010 8:58 pm

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill has resulted in major shortages and increased prices for oysters and shrimp. 70% of all oysters consumed in the US come out of the gulf and all Louisiana waters east of the Mississippi River are closed to shrimpers. Shrimp prices in LA rose 30% or more last week and many places have run out of oysters.

Yup, this was the same Minerals Management Service Government workers during the Bush Administration who were sleeping with oil company workers. Literally speaking. And the same Mineral Management Service in the name of deregulation made many of the safety regulations voluntary.

  337. Garret May 15, 2010 9:28 pm

The Fresno media is apparently reporting that Nevada and Fresno State are “openly lobbying” to get into the MWC. BSU actually stopped lobbying to get into the MWC…which makes me think that is already a done deal since they have been begging the MWC since 2003.

What’s the point in, if rumor is legit., for BSU/NV/FSU, to petition MWC admittance, when there’s alot of rumors going on bout the possibility that the MWC might lose their top three/four teams to the movement of the PAC10/BIG 12/BIG 10, wooing teams to their fold/expansion, for bigger paydays so to speak?
If these WAC teams stay put, the WAC will benefit more down the road.

  356. mctruck May 17, 2010 1:08 am

Another theory is that these schools want to elliminate the travel costs to/back from Hawaii….just as the other teams prior did exiting to form the MWC, and some going to C-USA.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
