Quarterback option

One of the NCAA’s basic rules is a player transferring between Division I schools must sit out a season.

Or is it?

Quarterback Taylor Graham was working on a transfer from Ohio State when he learned of a case where a player was granted an exemption to play without missing a season. Graham petitioned for an exemption, but the request was denied. UH head coach Norm Chow said Graham’s appeal also was recently denied.

“We gave it a shot,” Graham said. “They came back and said, ‘No.’ That’s all right. It was a long shot. I knew that. It is what it is. … There are rules set in place. There’s an appeals process. I figured, why not go for it and see what happens?”

Graham said the exemption had no bearing on his decision to transfer to UH.

“I was coming here no matter what,” Graham said. “In the process of it, while thinking it through, I thought I’d give (the request) a shot.”

Graham has embraced his role in drills. “I’ll help out the team any way I can,” he said.

In related Warrior news:

• Receiver Justin Clapp will not be able to participate in contact drills for three weeks after undergoing a procedure to ease cartilage discomfort in his left knee.

• Inside receiver Miah Ostrowski entered UH as a grayshirt in January 2008, meaning his 5-year eligibility clock expires at the end of the 2012 football season. He said he has not requested an exemption that would allow him to play basketball during the 2013 spring semester.

• Jordan Monico has moved from fullback to linebacker, a position he played in 2011. Monico initially joined the Warriors as a running back.

• While cornerback Mike Edwards recovers from offseason shoulder surgery, the Warriors have rotated several cornerbacks. Yesterday’s No. 1 corners were Dee Maggitt and John Hardy-Tuliau. Brian Clay, who had been practicing at cornerback, was the nickelback. Leroy Lutu and Bubba Poueu-Luna were the safeties.

• Wide receiver Trevor Davis made a nice acrobatic catch yesterday. Davis and Billy Ray Stutzmann have been taking first-team reps. During an 11-on-11 drill yesterday, Scott Harding was getting No. 1 reps as the inside receiver in three-receiver sets.

• Chow instructed an assistant to distribute rosters to fans attending yesterday’s practice.

Hope everybody has been working on their arm curls, because we’re raising a big toast to Koakane in celebration of his birthday. (Fire codes prevent us from lighting all of his birthday-cake candles.) Eat, drink and be a merry Monarch.

    Good morning yaw’ll,

Hard luck for Graham, would have loved to see him compete. I guess last year with him playing and all in season games, made it hard for him to get an exemption. Maybe if he didn’t play last season he would have got it. Oh well, I guess we all have to wait till next year.

    Go Warriors!

Chow always has been with programs that had big linebackers. It’s nice to see some schemes where Brenden Daley is in the middle and George Daily-Lyles is on the perimeter.

are we now contemplating a graduate qb transfer?

or is chow now satisfied with the likes of graves, woolsey, higgins, and alo?

having but four qb’s is like walking on thin ice. perhaps ex-qbs should be tossing the rock every now and then, just in case. i.e. bubba poueu-luna.

  17. al April 4, 2012 7:16 am

    happy birthday old man!

  18. Stephen Tsai April 4, 2012 7:18 am

Chow is sticking with the four QBs.

In this system, the QB won’t get rocked as much.

At some point, Shutter will return to the mix.

We’re still trying to figure out the identities of the two players wearing No. 37. (I don’t think Kenny Estes is back for his eighth year.)

Every time I ask, I get the hem-and-haw. It’s like asking your kid why he got a bad grade.

  24. RedZone April 4, 2012 7:23 am

He thinks that a healthy Ingram could play tight end or defensive end too. He just wants Alex to unleash when he kicks the ball. His main focus will be on field goals and punts. First mainly for scoring and the second because a blocked punt is such a huge game changer.

ST . . . all you have to do is run on to the field during practice and grab one of the 37’s and ask “WHO ARE YOU?” If he doesn’t answer, just yank off his helmet. Then . . . RUN!!!!!!

  31. Stephen Tsai April 4, 2012 7:30 am

    I think I’m on someone’s mailing list:

    Dear Stephen Tsai :

NFL Superstar Steven Jackson is redefining the modern day running back – one punishing carry at a time. This dreadlocked superstar is shattering the stereotypes that come along with being a power back, providing a glimpse of what is possible from today’s most captivating NFL ball carrier. This grounded, outspoken young man is not only living his dream, he’s helping others reach theirs through his Foundation, dedicated to promoting strong educational values for today’s youth.

Please let me know if I may schedule an exciting interview with Steven Jackson that is sure to delight your audience. Thank you.

  44. Kevin April 4, 2012 8:17 am

    DPK,

Just trying to post a link so those that want to can vote for this student-athlete that has been a life-long volunteer from her days in high school in San Jose, Calif,. where she spent time volunteering at the Good Samaritan Hospital in the Mother-Baby Unit; at the Sacred Heart Community Center in San Jose helping distribute care packages to homeless families and singles; at the Agnews Developmental Center where she worked with mentally challenged patients; and at the Villa Sienna Nusrsing Facility where she helped work with patients with Alzheimers and dementia. In Hawai‘i, she has worked as a Special Olympics volunteer; a four-year participant in the annual Kids’ Fest which promotes healthy lifestyles to children; was a camp instructor at the UH softball camps; has served as a Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative her senior year; and this past summer, Ricketts and her sisters Samantha and Keilani served as instructors/supervisors at a clinic in Pago Pago, Samoa, where they taught the value of education and athletics while trying to teach the Samoan youth the game of softball.

Ricketts has improved every season while she has been at UH as the main pitcher on the softball team. She is a two-time WAC Pitcher of the Year (2010, 11) and was named a 2011 Easton All-American. She is a two-time NFCA all-west region player. She became UH’s all-time career strike out leader as a junior with 589 passing a 16-year old record. She became just the second Rainbow Wahine to win over 20 games in three consecutive seasons. She has a career record of 74-32 with 127 appearances, 86 complete games, 23 shut-outs in 712.1 innings pitched and has a career 1.99 ERA while holding batters to a .209 average. As a junior, Ricketts set career marks with a 1.58 ERA and 250 strikeouts.

    VOTE STEPHANIE RICKETTS!!!

  48. kev-1 April 4, 2012 8:33 am

Just read (and think I remember someone posting here yesterday) that Joe Flacco thinks he’s the best QB in the league. I will save my rolling laughter for the privacy of my own mind. But I must say that if there is one QB that I want to see fail, it is Flacco (although I don’t think he is that good anyway, let alone great). I know I’ve said this before, but I believe it is Flacco that stole the spotlight from Colt at the combine. Colt just came off of the most accurate performance of the day and no one care because Flacco threw the ball really far. U kidding me?

I’m not saying that this robbed Colt of NFL stardom, but it did rob him of deserved attention at the combine. It surely affected when he got drafted.

I ordered a pallet of birthday candles from “Cup Cake & Things” here in Kapolei. Liz, Whitey, Duffer, and the Big Island crew can bask in the after glow at about 8 PM tonite.

My best advice to you my brother. Ride Da Bus today! No driving.

  54. Bowwar April 4, 2012 9:09 am

If our offensive line doesn’t hold-up this year, four quarterbacks may not be enough to last the season…Schutter will pay the crime once he’s given his day in court. I wish we had kept Spain…

Re: two (2) number 37’s… I thought there’s a piece of tape on each player’s helmet with his last name on it… Unless these are supposed to be decoys?

QB’s don’t get hurt in the Pro Offense? Really? The 2006 Oline still got eligibility?

Last time I checked Graves, Woolsey, Alo and Higgins all like to take off and run.

Remember what happened to Colt, Greg Alexander, and Mo? All it takes is one play.

NC from UCLA doesn’t stand for Norm Chow, right Al???

  66. whitey April 4, 2012 11:12 am

Kevin, the srclassaward voting machine is kinda smart. Said I voted, so no can till tomorrow.

  67. Stephen Tsai April 4, 2012 11:18 am

    kevin and ralph, thanks.

  77. whitey April 4, 2012 11:55 am

if Coach Chow is not fond of scrambling, can see why he did not want Vince Young as qb. He was like Randall C.

  78. whitey April 4, 2012 11:55 am

but then again he had Steve Young at BYU

  79. whitey April 4, 2012 11:58 am

just my thought, but I am thinking that if you are a qb and have to scramble a lot, this means you are not quick enough to make all the necessary reads of your receivers.

  80. whitey April 4, 2012 12:00 pm

but then again, your OL is not blocking and giving you the opportunity to make your reads. I guess you better learn to trust your OL.

  81. madeinhawaii April 4, 2012 12:05 pm

at UCLA, I believe the OL wasn’t blocking and the QB was getting pulverized when NC was OC.

  82. Wes'side Warrior April 4, 2012 12:14 pm

    Na Wahine on live stats:

    http://www.wolverinegreen.com/gametracker/launch/gt_wsoftbl.html?event=1046266&school=utva&

we missed a golden opportunity in the first, 3 consecutive walks, followed a HP gave us a run with one out. We couldn’t take advantage with the bases loaded, we’re up 1-0 going in the bottom half of the first.

  86. Bowwar April 4, 2012 12:47 pm

Yes, the OL didn’t block for Chow at UCLA and they ended up with a number of QBs being injured. Bottom-line, if the OL doesn’t block, its going to be a loooong season.

  87. Stephen Tsai April 4, 2012 12:50 pm

Two undeniable rules: Protect the ball, protect the quarterback. Being under center and having a fullback and one or two tight ends is ample protection.

  88. Stephen Tsai April 4, 2012 12:52 pm

Neuheisal forced the pistol on Chow at UCLA. That’s a rollout offense. UH QBs won’t be rolling out.

  89. wafan April 4, 2012 12:57 pm

    Go SoftBows!

  90. Stephen Tsai April 4, 2012 1:04 pm

I think Spain is a very nice guy. Can’t help but like him. But I have no idea about his potential as a QB because he didn’t throw very much. I’m pretty sure nobody else here has seen him throw a lot.

  91. madeinhawaii April 4, 2012 1:04 pm

I still see Thomas Olds name is still on the UH Roster. Is he back on the team?

  92. Stephen Tsai April 4, 2012 1:06 pm

No, Olds is in school but not participating in spring ball.

  93. Nanakuli April 4, 2012 1:06 pm

Thank you Ralph. That softball gametracker is like being at the game.

  94. Curt April 4, 2012 1:07 pm

    ST,

How do you think Chow will balance the run and pass ratio?

  95. Stephen Tsai April 4, 2012 1:11 pm

I think there’s a potential to be more balanced. Tight ends are receivers, too. So are fullbacks.

  96. Couch potato April 4, 2012 1:12 pm

cute lego softballers are playing on gametracker.

  97. Couch potato April 4, 2012 1:12 pm

    you can balance a ratio?

  98. madeinhawaii April 4, 2012 1:13 pm

  102. WarriorNY April 4, 2012 1:17 pm

Glad to see Harding is getting number 1 reps at the slot. ST, how’s the D looking? How would you compare our defensive coaches energy to our teams in the past?

  103. Curt April 4, 2012 1:18 pm

    cp,

Curt’s new math permits ratio balancing. 🙂

  104. madeinhawaii April 4, 2012 1:23 pm

I’m curious to know how the Van Ackerens brothers are doing … will both see playing time next season? I wonder.

  105. kev-1 April 4, 2012 1:24 pm

I think Coach means don’t be to quick with scrambling. I can’t imagine he would advise taking sack after sack. Sometimes gotta scramble.

  106. Couch potato April 4, 2012 1:25 pm

only kings speak in the 3rd person. so says Couch potato.

  107. Bowwar April 4, 2012 1:27 pm

ST – Didn’t Spain do really well in the last Warrior Bowl game? It was my understanding that he threw a number of excellent passes in that game.

  108. Ralph April 4, 2012 1:29 pm

B3. Na Wahine up 2-1, thanks to 7 walks and 2 HBP. We have one hit, Brynne, and we have left 7 on base in 3 innings. We got our first run on a HBP with the bases loaded, all by walks, and again in the second, bases loaded, we scored on a fielder’s choice.

  109. madeinhawaii April 4, 2012 1:45 pm

    Bowwar…

Good to see Kaia adjust after some wild pitches and walks.

Like they said earlier their pitches are also altered in altitude as their balls won’t break when they usually do and Kaia puts more movement on her pitches than Stephanie does so it must effect her more.

  114. whitey April 4, 2012 1:58 pm

i guess this is why da warriors have a pro style offense and not a run and shoot.

  115. Ralph April 4, 2012 1:59 pm

Kaia doing it in Orem. After 5, she’s given up 1 run on 2 hits, with 9 K’s and 2 bb. Score is 4-1, Na Wahine.

  116. whitey April 4, 2012 2:00 pm

wonda what practice will be like today.

  117. whitey April 4, 2012 2:00 pm

  119. mctruck April 4, 2012 2:03 pm

Ralph, tanks for da wahine-score…lookin good!

  120. Kevin April 4, 2012 2:07 pm

    DPK – #23 – Gramps is a legend? In his own mind maybe. 🙄 :LOL;

  122. kev-1 April 4, 2012 2:09 pm

I thought no more football practice today?

  123. Kevin April 4, 2012 2:10 pm

    Sorry ST,

I’m gonna SPAM the hell out of this blog with these LOWE’s Award reminders.

Even the most jaded and closet non-revenue sport hating person lurking the blog will have no choice but to vote.

  124. stiguy April 4, 2012 2:11 pm

I hope Justin Clapp recovers quickly. IMO he was one of the few bright spots on the offense last year (before he got injured of course).

  125. Couch potato April 4, 2012 2:13 pm

    let’s get more runs!

  126. madeinhawaii April 4, 2012 2:13 pm

Top of the 7th.. Wahine up 5-1 and I am dragging my butt at work.. sigh.

  127. HiFlyer April 4, 2012 2:13 pm

    5-1 top of the seventh

  128. madeinhawaii April 4, 2012 2:15 pm

Hawaii 5-0 as in Wahine with 5 runs on 5 hits and no errors…

  129. chawan_cut April 4, 2012 2:16 pm

happy birthday to the king of green bottles, Koakane!!!!

  130. oldtimer808 April 4, 2012 2:19 pm

I see that Majam is not playing today. Anyone knows if she is sick or injured?

  131. madeinhawaii April 4, 2012 2:20 pm

    oldtimer.. she batted twice..

Coolen is just substituting all the players now.. he’s clearning the bench… giving all the girls a chance at bat.

  132. madeinhawaii April 4, 2012 2:22 pm

16 girls have batted for Hawaii.

That’s got to make the other side pitcher and catcher a bit tenuous. They don’t know anything about these other girls. Heh.. shows Coolen’s confidence in the team.

  133. madeinhawaii April 4, 2012 2:23 pm

6-1 bases loaded, two outs, Sarah Robinson at bat.

  134. Couch potato April 4, 2012 2:23 pm

    grand slam would be nice.

  135. madeinhawaii April 4, 2012 2:24 pm

side retired… just got to hold to win with a 5 run lead going into the bottom of the 7th.

  136. Couch potato April 4, 2012 2:24 pm

    awwwww

  137. oldtimer808 April 4, 2012 2:27 pm

Mahalo I didn’t see her name in the live stats

  138. oldtimer808 April 4, 2012 2:28 pm

Ok I checked another area and saw that she batted twice as you said …again Mahalo

  139. madeinhawaii April 4, 2012 2:28 pm

Nakao, Lum and Burton in for the final inning..

  140. madeinhawaii April 4, 2012 2:32 pm

Hawaii WINS!… final score 6-1. BYU up next!

  141. wafan April 4, 2012 2:34 pm

    Bravo SoftBows!

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  142. oldtimer808 April 4, 2012 2:35 pm

Does anyone know if the softball game on Friday will be on the BYU channel and what time if showing?

  143. Stephen Tsai April 4, 2012 2:38 pm

In marketing, sometimes a more subtle message is better than large, blasting announcements, if you get my drift.

  144. jm2375 (Infuse) April 4, 2012 2:39 pm

Oldtimer – Saturday’s games will be on byutv but not Friday’s

  145. Ralph April 4, 2012 2:41 pm

Oldtimer 808 per BYU, both of Saturday’s games will be on BYUTV, but not Friday’s.

  146. Lanaiboy April 4, 2012 2:53 pm

Yeah, the BYU announcers joked about that, saying that they could not be in two places at once, so no softball. The BYU network is broadcasting a baseball doubleheader on Friday.

  147. Steve April 4, 2012 2:53 pm

Oldtimer – The Friday game will be on BYU Radio.

  148. Couch potato April 4, 2012 2:56 pm

  149. BigWave96744 April 4, 2012 2:56 pm

  150. Steve April 4, 2012 2:57 pm

Couch Potato – I think you need an increased dosage.

  151. Couch potato April 4, 2012 2:58 pm

lol, funny someone knows what i’m talking about. busted. 😆

  152. oldtimer808 April 4, 2012 3:06 pm

Mahalo for the information and would you please pass on the time of the game on Friday and Saturday’s doubleheader (Hawaii time) ….never mind I can check the UH website for those games. The age of instant telecommunications. To think I used to depend on phone booths to make calls when away from home and the newspaper for up to date news and I used to hate pagers which are now obsolete.

  158. AllG April 4, 2012 4:15 pm

Seems like if Chow wants his QB not to scramble that takes away a lot from Graves game. He is a very good runner, I think he just needs to teach his QBs when and how to slide. P/u the first down and get out of bounds.

  159. polywarrior4life April 4, 2012 4:19 pm

Back on the Bus! “Move to the rear please!”

    Happy B-Day Koakane.

Graves is a man on a mission. I think he is willing to do everything Chow asks of him because he wants to be the man. With Graham being billed as the next great thing at UH, I’m sure Graves knows that this is his year to seize and KEEP the position. I respect Graham. Although he comes with great pedigree, there are no guarantees that he will start next year when he becomes eligible. Especially if Graves has a great year.

    BIK

  162. Stephen Tsai April 4, 2012 4:47 pm

I wouldn’t worry about the QB situation or techniques. And, yes, if protection breaks down, the QB has permission to avoid being tackled. Sheesh.

  163. Kevin April 4, 2012 4:51 pm

Thanks to all for your prayers and well-wishes during my recent hospitalization! I could feel the warmth as I recovered from the operation.

Released from the hospital on April Fool’s Day so have been able to get some good rest for the last couple of days. Barbara has been my ROCK!!! Appetite slowly coming back.

Though there were 11 tornado incidents in the DFW area, we were fortunate to come through unscathed.

    Go Warriors!

  168. gmahoney April 4, 2012 6:06 pm

Dayton Morinaga reports that Bobby Miles leaving the mbb program, that’s 2 players in the last few weeks. Sinking ship or is coach Gib cleaning house?

  180. madeinhawaii April 4, 2012 7:32 pm

    Wow.. Bobby Miles, too?

  181. Steve April 4, 2012 7:37 pm

You Tsaikos seem so surprised by this announcement. Good God, the writing was on the wall, for Miles, even before the team got to the WAC Tournament.

  182. oldtimer808 April 4, 2012 7:38 pm

I’m sorry to see Bobby Miles leaving the program but I think coach is making scholarship room for new recruits.

  185. Bryson April 4, 2012 8:13 pm

With so many players leaving the program in his first two seasons one would have to wonder about the character of Gib Arnold. If he is in fact releasing scholarship players because he needs to free some up for new recruits then IMHO he seems to lack the understanding that he is a college coach not a professional coach. These kids who commit to a program are held to the responsibility of being a student athlete why should the coach not be held to the responsibility of coaching up players? What if this player isn’t able to get a scholarship elsewhere? Things like this will hurt recruiting especially from a parental stand point…

  186. mo808 April 4, 2012 8:23 pm

I saw him throw loooonnnggg passes when he first showed up during summer unsupervised practices. He would throw and Alan Sampson would run out to catch them. Pretty impressive. His Dad said he’s thrown 70 yds. Good luck to him wherever he lands.

and yea I VOTED again and again

    let do this

  200. al April 4, 2012 11:44 pm

ralph…its no sinking ship. this is typical in college sports to have student/athletes going from one program to another.

i think basketball may experience the most transitiond at season’s end than most other sports. its all about playing time.

bobby miles’ pt diminished at season’s end and in fact put himself in the doghouse in the end with some altercation with the coach.

bottom line: did he measure up to this level of play?

expect perhaps one more player leaving.

  201. slenzi April 5, 2012 1:27 am

Just got online. Voted for Stephanie. Enjoyed all the notes from ST about practice. Will check the UH web site for pics from practice.

  213. Pauoa Boy April 5, 2012 6:58 am

Hmm…Miles leaving, Joston leaving, maybe another too. I don’t like the fact that we don’t have some consistency with players sticking. How many have left already frikkin way too many. Salter, Coleman, Barnes, Brumfield, and now Thomas and Miles with maybe another one on the fence. Then our recruiting efforts have players not being able to qualify in Blakes, Stephenson, Mitchell, and Biggs possibly Fotu too? How can you build a team, a program when you got players coming and going with no consistency. Seems like something is going on, Coach Gib needs to figure it out cause I’m not liking this pattern at all. Going into next season with many unproven game time players besides Vander, Shaq, and Hauns doesn’t bode well. Shaq is still learning, Jace hasn’t played, Jawato hasn’t played, Lev is a freshman, Jefferson has no offensive game, Minns hasn’t played, that back-court right there looks hella weak to me. Then we got what Wiseman, Hauns, and Tyler Brown, umm yeah…Wiseman and Hauns are good but not great. The post aside from Vander is unproven. Rozitis is weak and looks lost at times. I’m hoping Stanhardinger is as good as advertised cause if not, we’ve got major issues next year. I highly doubt Dressler is ready to bang on the D1 level. If Fotu doesn’t make it then we’re in major trouble. On paper this does not look well for our basketball team and Coach Gib next year entering the Big West. Someone needs to step their game up big time!
