A family spokeswoman said former UH running back Heikoti Fakava died this morning in the Bay Area.

He is sixth on the UH career list with 2,011 rushing yards during a career in which he played under Dick Tomey and Bob Wagner.

Head coach Norm Chow and his staff met for several hours yesterday and, after reviewing videos of the recently concluded spring training, still could not decide on a No. 1 quarterback between David Graves and Jeremy Higgins.

The day after the Warrior Bowl, Chow said there was no clear-cut winner at quarterback.  Yesterday, He evaluated the matter one last time before coming up with another stalemate.

“We’re going to go into the fall with two (No. 1) quarterbacks,” Chow said.

After camp opens in August, Chow said, “a decision will be made quickly. The team needs to have a leader.”

David Graves entered the five weeks of spring training as the No. 1 quarterback. Jeremy Higgins played well enough to ascend from No. 4 to a share of the top spot. Higgins had strong performances in the Warriors’ last two spring scrimmages.

And so the summer of sweat begins….

Glad to hear about the talent at the skill positions and that McMackin’s buildup of the D is paying off. I guess the OL is the big question. What else is new?

  3. Buffoman May 1, 2012 6:33 am

If there is no one named, then what?

  4. Da Punchbowl Kid May 1, 2012 6:36 am

    Good Morning again.

Lotsa passes at Ching Field this summer. Hope everybody, including the QBs are working hard.

  6. MANA May 1, 2012 6:46 am

how do you guys feel about the new playoff format??

They gotta have some type of BCS buster rule for this tournament am i right? Or at still have seats open for the Big Bowls

  7. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2012 6:52 am

Let’s see . . . There are six BCS conferences, plus Notre Dame considers itself to be a conference in itself, and four playoff spots.

Let’s see how the SEC manages to hijack half of the playoff spots.

Get Outthe Vote…. Stephanie is in 2nd place… the other player is 8% ahead….yikes…

I hope this QB situation doesn’t turn out like last year, when the coach switched QBs in the middle of the game. Stick with one guy and let the Oline get use to him and his quirks.

May the best man win! Best they can do is manage the game well.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

I asked my son-in-law about the voting problem and while he could not actually give me the nuts and bolts “how-to-doit” referrred me to Wikipedia and the following:

“A CAPTCHA (play /ˈkæp.tʃə/) is a type of challenge-response test used in computing as an attempt to ensure that the response is generated by a person. The process usually involves a computer asking a user to complete a simple test which the computer is able to grade. These tests are designed to be easy for a computer to generate, but difficult for a computer to solve, so that if a correct solution is received, it can be presumed to have been entered by a human. A common type of CAPTCHA requires the user to type letters or digits from a distorted image that appears on the screen, and such tests are commonly used to prevent unwanted internet bots from accessing websites.”

I have not read the entire article – let alone understand it – maybe one of you math types can figure it out.

(Where is JASON when you need him?)

  19. tommui May 1, 2012 7:30 am

JM2375 – a very Happy Birthday to you! Enjoy!

  20. Wes'side Warrior May 1, 2012 7:38 am

    Howzit, everyone!

Happy birthday, JM!!! Hope you have an awesome day!

Unreal that Alabama can advance 20% in a single day! Fake! And, have you guys read the bio of each of these Finalists? Obviously, some of them were written up to make some look important and busy. I mean, “helped out” in such and such event? C’mon now. Not hating. Just pointing out that some seem to have earned their way onto this Finalists list, while others were placed there just because they are a member of special team(s). Had to choose somebody, right? Hope the coaches and national media can distinguish between the two, and vote accordingly.

Nervous and excited for our Warriors. Hope they put in the time necessary this summer to learn their books and gel. We all want to see a solid product when this season comes around.

  21. Wes'side Warrior May 1, 2012 7:43 am

I don’t know what the deal is, but I can’t even load the voting page. So I have no idea what the present vote is now.

I am shocked about this voting…but I can’t say I’m surprised. Online voting is pretty much a farce. Workplace went through one recently where a competing hotel was super far down, until the last day and they overtook us in 24 hours with an unbelievable surge. Good thing those conducting the voting researched it and found hundreds of votes from one computer. I’ll keep voting for Steph nevertheless.

  36. HawaiiMongoose May 1, 2012 9:18 am

Don’t the rules say you’re only supposed to vote once per day? If so then everyone voting for Steph more than once per day is cheating. (Sugar-coat it all you want but that’s what it is.) And now we’re upset because Alabama has found a way to cheat more effectively. Hey, what do you expect from the SEC?

  37. homey ℞ May 1, 2012 9:22 am

  39. oldie May 1, 2012 9:39 am

    Hi Tom

    Regarding CAPTCHA

I believe it was originally written by a young Carnegie Mellon professor (and students) for Yahoo to prevent bots from creating unlimited IDs as stated in Wikipedia.

The computer takes a word it knows and distorts it so pattern recognition programs can’t make it out.  Humans have no problem (we’re still superior in some ways).  Obviously, an Alabama geek found a way around it.

What is interesting about CAPTCHA is what the professor did next.  Although it takes just a few seconds to enter the response, because of the number of times it had to be done by millions of users, the professor figured there was a lot of wasted effort.

He added a word that the computer truly did not know.  It was from scanned books that were being digitized.  So when you enter the second word, you were helping correct errors in the digitizing process.  It was a brilliant use of free labor.

This scenario was documented in a PBS presentation several years ago.

    Sorry for going off topic.

“Hijack” half of the slots???? Maybe the best four teams should play and if two are from the SEC so be it. It is AAA ball to ther NFL compared to AA for other BCS conferences. Did you notice SEC players taken early in the draft or not?

I hope JD is successful at the MWC ADs meeting to quash any thoughts by former WAC memebers to gleefully approach moving to the MWC that their football team will be awarded $150K every time they play in Hawaii.

Will there be a “movement” for teams east of the rockies to ask for travel expenses to any west coast or Nevada destinations except for travel to San Diego, current MWC member, who will be leaving for the big east in 2013? Idaho left out because Boise St moving there also. Wonder how much Georgia paid Boise St to play last year?

Do individuals donate to UH only because they play a D1 schedule? Wonder how that would change if UH drops D1 football and concentrate only on other sports? There are certain big advantages, economically, without football. Become the bully and join the PAC 12 in all other sports – UH does it now.

  62. July Jones May 1, 2012 12:18 pm

How long is Schutter out? And does the Alo kid have a shot? He looked pretty good at Carson

MIH ~ Jm’s Triple Choc comes close. Once you recover from that, she hits you with the Bread Pudding. Double Whammy! T-gates become a distant memory as I slip into a comatose state.

  64. A-House May 1, 2012 12:33 pm

Sep 1968 and just back after 4 years in the military – I pick up the Friday morning paper and it screams of 18-20,000 fans for football on Saturday.

So I ask my rommie what high school teams are playing and he say UH! what? UH? when I left in ’64 one could count on maybe 500 showing up for games – yes, UH was playing a D2 schedule and fans showed up – last few years, except for 2 or 3 games, ticket count was almost always around 30K and this included all the give aways – thus, I can conclude that only 20-22K were actually paying coustomers.

now, how is this different than the late 60s and early 70s?

purchased season ticket in 1969 and still got them – different venue and location, but still a season ticket holder!

  65. homey ℞ May 1, 2012 12:47 pm

A-House – When thinking of eliminating football you should also consider title IX…and then the elimination of women’s teams…and no revenue from football to fund the other sports.

    Things I note

    1) Except for the ’66 BC game, attendance seems to have been taken by finishing your saimin in the Mauka/Diamond Head corner after opening kick-off and looking at the stands;

    2) I am reminded that Hawaii’s “history” in collegiate football is still in its early stages in comparison to most of the BCS schools. Who can name one other game that occurred in 1966?

    3) As others have mentioned, High School football was King back then

  76. Da Punchbowl Kid May 1, 2012 1:09 pm

At end of this month effective May 31, 2012 The Mountain West Network (Ch. 616) (MWN) a collegiate sports network will cease operation and end their bradcasting channel. This means the channel will not be available from any television provider. (I’m Guessing this will be good for UH and PPV).

CBS Sports Network (Ch. 613) (CBS SN) has the rights to some of Mountain West Conference bradcasts. ( I don’t know what this means to UH and PPV.) Additional televised athletic events from the conference have yet to be determined for the year 2012-13 athletic season.

We just have to see what events will be scheduled in the coming months.

I just got this email from DirecTV. I don’t think Oceanic had MW Network available.

  101. mikey May 1, 2012 2:59 pm

I still have Oceanic for UH Warriors PPV, OC 16 local sports and Ch 1012 for UH Sports and Samurai Movies on NGN Golden Network. You can’t get these channels on satellite.

But if you like Sports and High Definition HD you should get DirecTV has most HD channels than any other provider. I can pretty much see every major sport from around the globe Live and Direct. The best is HDNet Friday night Fights MMA (Free). Like HBO Boxing (paid).

And if you like Korean Drama you get every channel direct from Korea. Oceanic only has 2 Korean channels.

Comparing Dish to DirecTV most of Dish customers change over to Direct

And many of the DirecTV technicians were at Oceanic they also recommend DirecTV is better.

Our family likes to watch TV on Direct HD only if we have to watch Oceanic shows but quickly changes over when it’s done.

I was able to get on many occasions UH Football feed from the mainland but lately Oceanic has started to block them so no one but PPV are able to watch it.

Which I feel is not good for free marketing and for the mainland viewers.

  102. wafan May 1, 2012 3:00 pm

So, what do the Lowe’s folks mean they are looking at the situation?

Should be interesting to see what they do.

  103. mikey May 1, 2012 3:03 pm

Also I watched the Masters on 7 different channels on Oceanic just one Network channel.

So do we think that the other UH sports will move to MWC now that they are adding the other two schools? And somehow it feels like the original WAC…hope there aren’t any airport meetings on the schedule.

  110. d1shima May 1, 2012 3:09 pm

  112. Rob25 May 1, 2012 3:11 pm

I thought that the MWC didn’t want to take the other sports…but maybe I am wrong. I think that the Big West is a good fit for the other sports, but we should take all that we can into the conference if they are allowing it.

Hi duffer!!! I’m good and hope to see you soon one of these days. I gotta get my butt to Maui soon.

  137. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2012 5:02 pm

The theory is Notre Dame fans will buy season tickets just for the opportunity to get a good seat for the game. And while that will help the bottom line, I think the coaches’ feelings are UH fans should buy season tickets for good seats.

  142. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2012 5:10 pm

Not exactly how accurate that depth chart is.

The F is really a second tight end position. Bright has been playing it. I’m fairly certain Miah Ostrowski is not a tight end.

Looks like UH forgot to add Waylon Lolotai.

Also, Winchester-Makainai has played left guard and Hallowed has played right all guard all spring. I’m fairly certain the positions were transposed.

    Just saying . . .

  143. cheepono May 1, 2012 5:11 pm

  145. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2012 5:16 pm

    Hallowed is a walk-on lineman.

He was on the roster last year.

Vele is the only fullback. Dustin Elisara might be out for a long time because of a knee injury. Not exactly sure what is wrong with Jared Leaf but was told he has an illness and lost about 20 pounds.

  146. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2012 5:19 pm

Hardy-Tuliau and Maggitt took all of the first-team CB reps the past month.

But the coaches were holding a starting job for Mike Edwards.

So Maggitt becomes a backup and, because of that, Brian Clay, who has been getting a lot of reps all spring, isn’t on the depth chart. I think that’s an omission.

All FB starts with OL. If we are going to improve to a winning record, they will have to run block and make Joey the guy everyone has to worry about each week. A workmanlike QB performance will suffice.

I think Defense will be above average and that will help. All will be OK if we get respect in LA Coliseum.

  157. RedZone May 1, 2012 6:12 pm

I like Samia at NT. It will take a jack hammer to move that boulder. But in the first game across the line of scrimmage will be an all american candidate at center.

Miah practiced most od the spring. He did well in all three scrimmages.

Clay was moved to safety three weeks ago.

  161. d1shima May 1, 2012 6:55 pm

HMongoose has a good point. The HC is purported to be a stickler for details. Why all the erroneous info on this release?

  162. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2012 7:02 pm

Chow left for the mainland this afternoon.

From what I understand, there are three positions that were somehow consolidated into one.

For the record, Vele is the fullback. Ostrowski is a slotback but will be used as an X. Evans is the F. Evans is a good player but he needs to improve his conditioning. Chow said he’s exhausted in the second half of practices.

  163. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2012 7:05 pm

The LG spot is weird unless it’s a setup for the JC transfer. Chauncy was the No. 1 LG until suffering a concussion.

  164. rage777 May 1, 2012 7:06 pm

I thought Tavita was going to be high on the list at TE?

  165. rage777 May 1, 2012 7:11 pm

The blog clock is about 30 minutes off.

  166. Shadow May 1, 2012 8:22 pm

Can’t say if they’re “mistakes” on the the depth chart, but it makes sense to me. Vele at F if FB used in “I” sets, Ostrowski at F if empty set or 4 receivers used, Evans at F if 2 or 3 TE sets used.

  167. Kekoa May 1, 2012 8:27 pm

Hekoti Fakava ~ Good man, great Warrior. Condolences to the family, may he rest in peace.

  168. kapakahi May 1, 2012 8:27 pm

    #164,

JMHO that Chauncy will still end up as the No. 1 LG entering Fall Camp….but missed out on too many Spring practices with concussion…..as well as back problems…..to be listed No. 1 LG right now.

  169. manoa#1 May 1, 2012 8:29 pm

#153 u get your facts straight so you saying miah practiced the fullback position in spring,so why da hell was he playing receiver in the warrior bowl.

  170. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2012 8:35 pm

I think we read fb as football not fullback. That’s why I said the F listing is messed up. Miah is defintely a receiver. The only healthyh fullback is Vele. Ethan Watanabe is going to play fullback. Lolotai moved back to tight end but they forgot to list him. They also forgot the nickelbacks.

  171. oldtimer808 May 1, 2012 8:45 pm

Let the coaches coach and stop the speculating. I doubt very seriously that there is any favoritism with all that needs to be done to get ready for fall camp.

  172. Hawkpeter May 1, 2012 8:49 pm

The layout of the depth chart properly reflects the new tendencies of the offense to shift between various personnel packages.

21 for Two RB’s (one FB) and a TE, 20 for Two RB’s (one FB), 11 for one RB and a TE, 12 for one RB and two TE’s.

The F in effect is ‘switch’ player who in this case could be a slot, TE or fullback.

In previous years UH ran 10 personnel almost exclusively.

  173. kev-1 May 1, 2012 8:51 pm

Scrolling through todays posts and saw some talk about ND. Is that real talk or people just messing around? Talking this season?

  174. kev-1 May 1, 2012 8:53 pm

Coach Chow hasn’t been here long enought to have favorites. Guarantee just a super preliminary depth chart to throw a bone to the media and the fans. Watch how significant that thing changes. We only had spring camp.

  175. kapakahi May 1, 2012 8:57 pm

    #141, #143, & #146,

The loss of 7 scholie OL (Faaumu, Hansen, Laurel, Lefiti, Leonard, Olds, Sapolu) from last season’s 2011 roster really showing itself now…..at how thin the OL depth really is when….a walk-on (Hunter Hollowed) is listed on the 2-deep…..and the only 2 remaining OL (walk-on Ethan Mahaulu & injured senior returning starter Levi Legay) on the UH Spring Roster are not listed on the official depth chart.

Only 2 walk-on OL….also indicates the lack of available OL scout teamers…..with the loss of 4 walk-on OL (Collins, Daniel, Lim, Purdy) from last season’s 2011 roster. That’s a total loss of 11 OL from last year’s 2011 roster….leaving just 12 (but really just 11 healthy) OL on the roster exiting Spring Ball. Other than incoming JC transfer OL Mike Milovale, JHMO that I don’t see incoming true frosh OL (Leo Koloamatangi, Kiha Sai) contributing this coming 2012 season. Hopefully there are other new OL faces (like Kiha’s older bro Kapua) joining the team in Fall Camp that will eligible to compete this coming 2012 season.

BTW, not liking the fact that the only senior returing starting OL Levi Legay not mentioned at all on depth chart. Also not liking that FB Jared Leaf also is missing altogether from depth chart. Even though it’s understood that both were injured and/or ill and therefore didn’t or couldn’t participate in Spring Ball, JMHO that it’s still not a good sign for Levi & Jared that they aren’t listed on depth chart…..since returning senior RB Sterling Jackson (who was also was injured and didn’t participate in spring drills) rated mention on the official depth chart.

Sterling’s “status” must be somehow different than Levi and/or Jared. Hmmmmm……..

  176. Slugger May 1, 2012 9:29 pm

    Condolences to the Fakava ‘ohana.

    I voted….

  177. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2012 10:11 pm

Jackson and Edwards had shoulder surgeries so there’s specific return dates for them. Legay has a back injury so it’s not set on when he’ll return. I’ve heard estimates such as August. Nobody is really sure about Leaf’s illness, which is why he was rested for the second half of spring training.

Trouble with depth chart is they tried to list 11 offensive positions when they actually have more No. 1s because of the different sets.

  178. whitey May 1, 2012 10:13 pm

i personally don’t see the depth chart as being what the team will look like, but more as a measuring stick for all da warriors prior to fall practice. some will take the challenges and some will not, but everyone will know who will be starting during fall practice. i am assuming that each player knows their strength and weakness after spring ball, so will wait to see the cream rise to the top during fall practice.

  179. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2012 10:15 pm

    Don’t forget Tuiososopo is joining.

Ethan is no longer on the team.

  180. kev-1 May 1, 2012 10:16 pm

Yup whitey, that’s the junk part though . . . gotta wait. Football fix is pau until what, August? So depressing. I might go and punch a fire extinquisher case.

  181. Ralph May 1, 2012 10:16 pm

Na Wahne tennis will play Norte Dame in the first round of the NCAA championships. UH played ND this year at the UHTC losing 6-1 on March 14. ND was a top 20 ranked team when they visited the Islands.

  182. kev-1 May 1, 2012 10:16 pm

    Ethan?

  183. kev-1 May 1, 2012 10:17 pm

oh nevermind, I was thinking of the Ethan that is coming in the fall. My bad.

  184. whitey May 1, 2012 10:21 pm

like Coach Chow said, each incoming player will be given a chance, this only raises the bar for all da warriors.

  185. no comment May 1, 2012 10:23 pm

    f flanker

  186. whitey May 1, 2012 10:25 pm

but if an incoming player starts, i have no qualms because he worked hard prior to fall practice to earn that position.

  187. whitey May 1, 2012 10:25 pm

actually same for all players who are not listed.

  188. manoa#1 May 1, 2012 10:58 pm

word is out that the coaches made some cuts and released a couple of players yesterday.

  189. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2012 11:13 pm

F doesn’t translate. It’s just a letter assigned to the motion tight end who can align in the slot, wide or backfield.

  190. no comment May 1, 2012 11:17 pm

    f is flanker not fullback

  191. manoa#1 May 1, 2012 11:18 pm

thanks ST for clarifying the F position.

  192. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2012 11:33 pm

In UH’s offense, the Z is the flanker (aligned on the tight end side of the formation).

The X is the split end (on the single side).

There are two tight ends. The Y is the on-line tight end. The F is the motion tight end. (Some offenses refer to him as the H-back.)

    There also is a fullback.

And UH has a slot receiver.

So, as you can see, UH actually has about 13 players who are considered starters on offense.

Cofer was the Y for the first half of spring training. He moved to F for a bit, but now can play both tight end spots.

  193. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2012 11:43 pm

I thought Dylan McCagg had a pretty good spring.

  194. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2012 11:45 pm

As for kick returners, UH actually uses two deep returners. Edwards is aligned near the goal line. Gant is offset at about the 10. So Gant is actually a starter, but not the primary returner. If Edwards can’t play, then Trevor Davis is his immediate backup. Gant would remain as the offset returner.
