QB commits to UH

Quarterback Ikaika Woolsey, a 2011 graduate of Salesian Pride High in California, has accepted a scholarship offer from the Warriors and will enroll at UH in January.

Woolsey, who is 6 feet 1 and 205 pounds, currently is enrolled as a part-time student at City College of San Francisco. As a grayshirt, he is allowed to practice with the CCSF football team but not play in any games. He turned down an opportunity to be CCSF’s starting quarterback because he wanted to play for the Warriors.

He will have five years to play four seasons at UH.

Woolsey said he has several relatives living on Oahu. “It will be nice to play in front of family,” Woolsey said.

Quarterback Justin Alo does not project to meet the requirements to join the Warriors in January 2012.

Instead of going to a junior college, Alo plans to continue to take classes part-time while training. His plan is to join the Warriors in January 2013, giving him still five years to play four seasons.

  13. Revelation September 28, 2011 12:18 am

I mean he mentioned it was a top recruit, but this guy is not even rated on the scouting sites, also I NEVER heard of the guy til now….

  14. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 28, 2011 12:18 am

    Welcome to the new Warrior.

I don’t have the historical knowledge like many bloggers here so I can’t say the name rings any bells.

  15. ai-eee-soos September 28, 2011 12:19 am

plenty “hits”, when you google his name.

  16. Sean September 28, 2011 12:24 am

Welcome to the Warrior Nation Ikaika.

ST said he could’ve started this year for CCSF.

He looks very accurate on his throws, has a very strong arm, also elusive. Time will tell. Maybe the quarterback of the 2013 or 2014 season(s).

Is this the Grail or a hidden gem?

  17. Curt September 28, 2011 12:27 am

Is Justin Alo still coming to UH in Jan or did he change his mind? Whatever the case, I think we’ve got some top flight QBs duking it out next season.

  18. Stephen Tsai September 28, 2011 12:32 am

UH is now done recruiting quarterbacks for this year.

  19. Curt September 28, 2011 12:34 am

Next year’s QBs: Graves, Shutter, Godfrey, Spain, Higgins, and Woolsey. All right!

  20. RedZone September 28, 2011 12:35 am

Watching the video I thought I was watching Mo.

    Welcome Ikaika.

  21. RS September 28, 2011 12:36 am

gonna be exiting to see who comes out as the top qb

  22. Stephen Tsai September 28, 2011 12:38 am

Woolsey is actually a pretty good athlete.

    He’s mostly a thrower.

  23. MattyBoy September 28, 2011 12:39 am

    ST,

Why the secrecy with this recruit???? It seems as if he’s really not that great of a prospect at all. No info on him whatsoever. And what do the coaches see in him?. I’m sure they recruited him for a reason.

  24. Stephen Tsai September 28, 2011 12:40 am

UH wanted to space out the QB classes.

Here’s how it looks for 2012:

Juniors — David Graves, Cayman Shutter.

Sophomores — Stump Godfrey, Jeremy Higgins, Kevin Spain.

    Freshman — Ikaika Woolsey.

  25. Stephen Tsai September 28, 2011 12:42 am

    What was the delay?

CCSF coach George Rush wanted to keep Woolsey.

Woolsey wanted to be a Warrior in 2012, not 2013.

  26. Stephen Tsai September 28, 2011 12:44 am

UH passed on a guy who committed to Nevada to take Woolsey. They love his arm, and ability to control a game.

  27. MattyBoy September 28, 2011 12:50 am

Ok well, the coaches know a heck of a lot more than I do. I guess we’ll see in time how he pans out. Welcome to the Warrior Nation Ikaika!!!

  28. RedZone September 28, 2011 12:59 am

I UH going after his highschool teammate Freddie Tagaloa?

  29. RedZone September 28, 2011 1:03 am

    Nobody recruited Bryant Moniz.

  30. Wes'side Warrior September 28, 2011 1:16 am

    Morning, everyone!

If the coaches see something on tape that piques their interest, and specifically that will fit in our offense or defense, I’m glad they go after these guys. They’ve proven time and time again that they can spot talent. There are thousands of Juniors and Seniors in high school every year who never get looked at by the “experts” who supposedly give out grades. Who cares if we get guys who haven’t been given a proper “look at”? Our coaches have shown that they can teach and train these boyz. If they are willing to work hard at it, they will succeed. Case in point… our walk-on team captains.

So, with that, welcome Ikaika! Take care of your academics so you can concentrate on your game play!

Welcome to the Warriors Ikaika Woolsey!

  35. WarriorNY September 28, 2011 3:21 am

How do we find these QB’s? I don’t understand why a top level QB recruit wouldn’t want to play here and always be among the top QB’s statistically in the nation…

BTW – Anyone notice the recruiting class JJ is putting together at SMU?? Damn he should send some of the leftovers our ways…

    http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/school/_/id/2567/southern-methodist-mustangs

  36. WarriorNY September 28, 2011 3:23 am

Not saying Ikaika will not be good. Just saying we find these guys that are flying under the radar…

ST, Do you know what other schools he was being recruited by?

  37. mctruck September 28, 2011 3:31 am

I liked watching Graves in action, very promising…if these are the caliber of qb/athletes UH have recruited, it’s going to be even more interesting to see who comes up on top next season. GO WARRIORS!!

  38. Slugger September 28, 2011 4:14 am

    Welcome, Ikaika!

I met another CCSF student who was visiting before the road trip… He wants to play here, too.

Back to the sack… just had to peek…

  39. lava September 28, 2011 4:19 am

It sounds like the new qb really wanted to be a Warrior.

On a different note, what ever happened to Tate Forcier? Is he out of football or did he land somewhere?

  40. 808realism September 28, 2011 4:48 am

    Dear uh staff,

We have enough quarterbacks, please start recruiting some linemen who can MOVE AROUND (w/o getting hurt) and some DB’s that are taller than 5’10”. This is what it will take to be successful.

  41. Annoddah Dave September 28, 2011 5:11 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

This is the WAC opener, I hope the Warriors are still pissed about the UNLV game and have the fire in the butt to make a statement.

    Go Warriors!

  42. PONO September 28, 2011 5:23 am

Disappointing announcement. All they hype for an unknown player. Good Luck to Ikaika but I hoped for more after all the hype.

Group rate tickets for Reno game on Nov. 12:

Tickets are only $22; the regular rate is $29 and I am NOT charging a $10 service fee per ticket. Just called the Reno ticket office; they still get plenty good seats in the UH section–L (30 yard line–rows 4 thru 29) behind the team–the team will do the haka right in front of us!

For the map of stadium seating, open this link and click “Mackay Stadium”:

    http://www.nevadawolfpack.com/tickets/u…ckets.html

PS: there is gambling in Reno; lol–but not for the players!

    Email me at: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com

PSS: We had 125 in our group at UW; and we get almost 200 for San Jose (let me know also if u need tickets for SJSU for only $25 group rate; compared to $45).

  44. el burro sabio September 28, 2011 5:52 am

Every year there are probably 5,000 new players at FBS and FCS schools and way more than that coming out of high schools and junior colleges. Most of them are unknown players.

  45. letsgowarriors September 28, 2011 5:52 am

thanks for the scoops tsai. anymore verbals this week?

  46. Hilo Moon September 28, 2011 6:00 am

Dating myself, but is Ikaika Woolsey related to the great Hawaii swimmer of the 40’s or 50’s?

  47. Hilo Moon September 28, 2011 6:02 am

I think the swimmer’s name was Bill Woolsey.

  48. Kekoa September 28, 2011 6:04 am

    Ikaika

An appropriate Warrior name to go with the position. A lot to live up to. E komo mai Ikaika!

    Great Morning All!

    Welcome new Warrior Ikaika Woolsey!

  50. d1shima September 28, 2011 6:08 am

Hope the team locks down all the roster moves this morning.

Gear up, saddle up, move out!

    On to victory!

  51. Old Diver September 28, 2011 6:10 am

I don’t get the “never heard of him” criticism.

  52. d1shima September 28, 2011 6:13 am

Note to all the potential recruits/parents who follow this blog,

All the “who dat?” posts last night were actually posted by pretender fans from rival schools.

No true fan in his right mind would be so insensitive as to make a young man feel so unwanted after making such an important life decision.

The true fans will whole-heartedly welcome anyone who decides to don the Hawaii uniform and chooses to represent this great and gracious State!

  69. Bryson September 28, 2011 6:58 am

Welcome to the Warrior Ohana Ikaika if the JC coach wanted him to start as a freshman that says alot about this kid and his abilities,I’m guessing we didn’t wanna lose this kid like we lost Masoli to Oregon because we agreed to let him play one more year…Just by name alone this kid was meant to be here…

  70. letsgowarriors September 28, 2011 7:00 am

weird that in JC u can be apart of the team even though u are a greyshirt. too bad we can’t do that in D-1.

  71. Buger September 28, 2011 7:03 am

It seems Ikaika is an under the radar type prospect who the Hawaii coaches are very high on. And they didn’t want other schools to know about their interest as they might try to poach him.

I guess nationally, he has been in the Schuman’s national underclassmen camps. The previous year, he was the QB MVP- 11th Grade at the U100 camp in LA (Jul 2010). It appears the top 15 at each position from this camp get invited to the top prospect camp at Oklahoma. He placed 3rd at the top prospect camp behind a couple of more prototypical 6’5 guys.

    CLASS OF 2011

Top Prospect Elite Rising Senior QB Rankings

1 Garrett Leatham Red 419 Middle Creek NC QB QB 7’5.5 208

2 Mike Wegzyn Gray 53 Knoxville Catholic TN QB QB

3 Ikaika Woolsey Navy 182 Salesian CA QB QB 71.5 194

  72. Wes'side Warrior September 28, 2011 7:10 am

#24… ST… Thanks for the breakdown on QB’s by class/year. It’s been shown time and again that our QB’s need time to learn this offense. This gives the incoming ones time to get acclimated to college life, as well as more time to learn what we do.

Can’t wait to see who else wants to become Warriors as the season progresses.

  73. Dennis Halloran September 28, 2011 7:45 am

If you look at CCSF stats, #2 in State , Balanced offense, top scoring team in state and four Frosh QB’s

If he would have started there, that tells me something, Moniz #2 rising in the City by the Bay

  74. Bryson September 28, 2011 7:47 am

I’m guessing Ikaika redshirts next year to give him time to learn the offense… We as fans should be happy to have a player who wants to represent Hawaii and UH…

  75. WWF September 28, 2011 7:58 am

Ikaika is a killer name for a UH Warrior QB.

  76. Da Punchbowl Kid September 28, 2011 8:07 am

    Good morning Tsaikos

#54 UHfan – May need to change your Annual tsai-ko Christmas Party 5:30 pm@ Murphy’s Bar & Grill (Downtown) … On the same day Wahine VV 2011 NCAA Regional Sweet 16 play at Stan Sheriff Center Time TBD but most likely 7:00 PM Saturday.

  82. mikey September 28, 2011 8:20 am

#57 – You definitely don’t want to be near Waikiki on that Saturday, Airport area might be safe with lots of exit and access road, unless President Obama is coming thru airport at that time. I’m sure he will land at Hickam AFB but time and date hasn’t been announced.

  83. BigWave96744 September 28, 2011 8:20 am

Hilo Moon, I was wondering the same. Small Kid Time, I took swimming lessons from coach Woosley

  84. RedZone September 28, 2011 8:24 am

I’ve heard of Woosley before. I am glad that he chose to be a Warrior.

  85. mikey September 28, 2011 8:24 am

It’s Great that Ikaika decided to enroll at UH early.

There seems to be there was a lot of interest from the Pac-10 school.

He was MVP 11th Grade on http://www.ultimate100camp.com

    http://www.nationalunderclassmen.com

  86. Ipu Man September 28, 2011 8:28 am

    #40 808 realism has a point:

“…start recruiting some linemen who can MOVE AROUND (w/o getting hurt) and some DB’s that are taller than 5’10”. “

  87. Da Punchbowl Kid September 28, 2011 8:29 am

When you have a good athlete who wants to be a Warrior and charts his course accordingly, its a good thing. Remember how Vaughn Meatoga committed early and always had UH as his first choice?

  88. koakane September 28, 2011 8:37 am

    morning

Regarding the Christmas gathering we took into account the many suggestion being made. In the end this was the best day. Only thing we can offer is if can can if no can still can. Its up to you.

UHfan808 good job trying to get places away tgate.

  89. Slugger September 28, 2011 8:40 am

    Good morning, gang!

Hope the guys had a good practice and safe travels to the mainland.

Safe travels to ST, too. Let your okole recover & don’t wander into any LA casinos. 😀

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  90. LizKauai (iPhone) September 28, 2011 8:41 am

    Thanks, DPK and Sweety!

  91. Innocent Observer September 28, 2011 8:45 am

During the UNLV telecast, the announcers mentioned that Hawaii was going to get a highly recruited QB from either New Mexico or New Mexico State. He has or will commit and was in the process of transferring. Can’t recall the name, but did anyone else hear it too?

  92. Ipu Man September 28, 2011 8:46 am

Hope each quarterback can play a lot

(with each having Moniz-type first halves

    it is possible…)

Do your best and then some more!

Juniors — David Graves, Cayman Shutter.

Sophomores — Stump Godfrey, Jeremy Higgins, Kevin Spain.

    Freshman — Ikaika Woolsey.

  93. mikey September 28, 2011 8:49 am

Tho ST say UH are done recruiting QB for this year, they should never stop getting QB

Prior times at UH, we’ve had many QB move to other positions. And in most school QB are the best Athletes who could play many positions.

  94. mikey September 28, 2011 8:51 am

And congradulation to SMU and JJ for getting commits from a 4**** RB – rank at #11 Robert Lewis from S E high school in California.

We’ve never had that here in Hawaii recuiting.

  95. Ipu Man September 28, 2011 8:52 am

Without Tank Hopkins, Hawaii would be a so-so team.

He should make all WAC first team this year.

So I pray for his health and success.

    Smash ’em Tank.

    That’s what tanks do…

  96. mikey September 28, 2011 8:52 am

    sorry Congratulation

  97. postmanke September 28, 2011 8:54 am

91 – are you talking about Stump?

  98. Ipu Man September 28, 2011 8:56 am

And Justin Alo…Just do it, you can!

  99. Ipu Man September 28, 2011 8:59 am

Bet coach Mac would love to put on a helmet himself

    for this game…

I thought only Stump was going to be Soph in 2012 and all other QB coming back was Juniors. I never know how this class system work. Oh well better for US.

It’s also great the we got Stump Godfrey a transfer from New Mexico, He was named Mr. Texas in 2009 and Player of the Year by Associated Press. Also winning 3A Division MVP.

He was not release by New Mexico and came to Hawaii on his own expense. That’s called determination! I can’t wait to see him and others in Spring Training 2012!

Last week New Mexico Head coach was first to be let go this season.

  102. Derek September 28, 2011 9:06 am

Saw Ikaika’s highlight film. I liked what I saw.

    1) He looks to have good escapability and can get some valuable yards when running w/ the ball.

    2) Throws a very catchable ball. Isn’t a hard thrower, but has a good arm motion.

    3) I really like his neat pump fake. Not too many QBs do that regularly. It definitely freezes the defense for a moment and can make all the difference in the world.

    4) He looks at his progressions pretty well and looks for secondary receivers before running.

    5) All the highlights show him under center, meaning he’s very comfortabe with that. It would be no problem for him in the shot gun.

    6) Throws the medium to medium long passes w/ good touch.

Ikaika is a very good Hawaiian name. It mean “strong”. We need that in our QBs. Best of all, he wants to be here. Welcome to the Warrior Ohana!

P.S. Should have some great competition in the spring. If Woosley isn’t the starter next year I think he’ll probably take 2012 as a redshirt year. That’s not a bad thing and he will get more reps after a full year in the program. The way I see it, the top 3 QBs for next year are David Graves, Darien Godfrey, and either Cayman Shutter or Jeremy Higgins. And as Stephen reports we expect Justin Alo to join the program likely in 2013. We need to recruit defensive and offensive linemen in particular. Finding skill players who can make plays are also in demand. Right now, we have only 3 recuits announced so far. Woolsey, Dustin Adams, and Eddie Lackey. That’s it!

Actually “Stump” is his nickname. First name is Darian.

Also he won the State of Texas Division 3A State Championship.

He lost only 3 games as a starter.

Good Morning Tsaikos….Hope all have a great day!!!

    D1…#52….Agree totally…Amen my brother!!!

#81 Mikey….Yes, we took that into consideration, among numerous other things but like Koakane said in #88, that was the best day we could find for the Christmas party. We start at 530 but usually don’t end until late in the evening, like midnight….so like KK said, just come when you can. If can can if no can still can….LOL.

This weeks game is very important why you lose this game more the critics will be on coach mack. I’ll always say this you play how you practice. Too much whimpy injuries against a FCS school better be ready I know Latech will.

I like that we take a good look at many scouting media attention deficit recruits. As long as we keep threatening for the WAC / MWC title we keep gettting players that can play and the coaches are coaching em up. There’s so many talented recruits it could be the scouts / media aren’t keen enough to notice these guys as much as coaches can..

I would give Ikaika 5***** – 1 star each for Over top motion, Hip Action, Happy Feet, Patience and his Name.

    Another 5 Star recruit!

Good points postmanke, we aren’t competing for the prominent 5 star athlete (we can’t pay enough under the table) we are looking for the gem who was overlooked. Sounds like the coaches have found one.

  111. postmanke September 28, 2011 9:38 am

Maybe a future Kellen Moore? only the coaches could see the talent in this player..

Some of my lucky friends caught a train last night from Chicago to New Orleans by way of stopping at Memphis to see the Legendary Elvis. Then on to Louis Tech game Saturday.

I did that 2 years ago and it was rough. and start of Moniz at QB, we lost that game.

We got lucky and saw Wahine VV play next night right next to Stadium arena.

Boy the Wahine’s were suprise to see us Bus load coming in and we were the largest fans that night. And can’t beat Free entence fee, free chips and soda. Wow.

But I’m sure Mo won’t let that (lost) happen again. He wants to clear that air with full of TD passes.

  123. mikey September 28, 2011 10:23 am

And I hear Louis Tech needs help at Defense.

    Go Warriors!

Mac said on Coaches Show that LaTech will blitz UH.

LaTech Color man said today on Curran Show that the LaTech defensive backs had very good coverage for most of the game vs. Mississippi State and another game.

    Hope UH is ready.

  127. madeinhawaii September 28, 2011 10:40 am

Mississippi State uses a balanced attack.. 870 yds rushing vs 839 yds passing.

Houston passes more than they run… 555 yds rushing vs 1785 passing

Central Arkansas uses a passing attack … 345 rushing vs 1142 passing

La Tech beat Central Arkansas loss to the other two teams.

Tech took a 34-7 lead on Ray Holley’s seven-yard run with just over five minutes to play in the third quarter, before the Houston Cougars scored four straight touchdowns. Houston threw 280 of their 351 yards in the second half.

Warriors get chance to blow this one wide open if they can get a fast start and take care of the ball. FOCUS and WIN!

  128. Garret September 28, 2011 10:41 am

The MWC and CUSA released a joint statement this afternoon about the merger talks that they have been having.

“Athletics directors and administrators at Conference USA and the Mountain West Conference enjoyed a productive exchange of ideas this week. In today’s dynamic intercollegiate athletics environment, we feel it is important to be proactive and creative. Our intention is to move forward together with this discussion and analysis at a focused pace.”

“It’s an idea that’s been being discussed for well over a year now. and I think it’s a good idea,” Banowsky said. “It involves us putting together all of the football assets from both conferences into one new football conference that would span five time zones and involve 24 teams.

Although there is no guarantee at this point that the Wahine will be playing in the Sweet Sixteen, if they are, then DrDoc and I will be at The Stan. And so should every other UH Tsai-ko. Hopefully, the party organizers will be able to extend the closing hours of the holiday party so that we can drop on by afterwards.

However, to get there, our team has to win not only the WAC tournament or at least the WAC season title and then survive two rounds of NCAA play. Realistically, can all that happen?

Yes, but the playoff scenario won’t start running until November 12 which is the last WAC regular season match. The WAC tournament in Las Vegas will be held November 21-23. The first two rounds, location TBA, are December 1 – 4.

Scout.com’s assessment from the June 2010 Fresno State Skills Camp:

QB Ikaika Woolsey, Richmond (Calif.) Salesian

Woolsey is about 6’ to 6-foot-1. He seems to be an athletic quarterback, but he was not given a chance to display that at this camp. He throws a great spiral, which was the best at the camp. He is entering his third year as the starter at Salesian and has put up some impressive numbers.

He had great footwork and a quick fluid motion. From a coaching standpoint, he has only minor things to work on. His basic passing skills are raw; he showed flashes of greatness and then would follow that with elementary type throws. His short passing game – which is 70% of a quarterback’s game – needs improvement. But mechanically, he is very sound.

Woolsey’s footwork was the best at the camp. He throws over the top and does not take too much time to get rid of the ball. The most impressive thing was his strength in the pocket not taking a hitch to throw the short passes which helps on timing. The biggest concern about Woolsey is that he may be a run first quarterback. Fresno State does not need a run first option unless Hill plans to change the offense. That is tough mindset to break a quarterback out of when they have done that all their lives. Final thought about Woolsey is that he is a coach’s worst nightmare – he has huge potential.

I too was quite surprised by the “who dat” posts. But to be quite honest, I never heard of 90% of the guys in the NFL either. So I think that Mr. Woolsey is in good company.

  147. Stephen Tsai September 28, 2011 12:34 pm

I know everyone will be sending prayers and good thoughts to Stump Godfrey, who is dealing with a serious family emergency. He’s been excused from practices this week. He is expected to rejoin next week.

Bay Football League MVP… San Francisco Chronicle All-Metro Honorable Mention… 137 completions, 225 attempts, 2,492 yards, 35 touchdowns.

    Wondering:

how many “super rich” people in the Far East would consider donating $$$ to UH, academics and athletics, to build a “foot path”, “walkway”, “road”, and “bridge” to pave the way for citizens of their country to attend UH and play a sport for UH – golf, softball, soccer, basket ball, volleyball, track & field, baseball, football, water polo, and swimming and diving.

and, simultaneously, attracting the interest of “television” from their major networks to beam games live back home – after all they are 1 day ahead and 4 – 6 hours behind of Hawaii Standard time. Thus, a 6 pm Saturday game will be seen on Sunday at 2 – 4 pm.

maybe the Hawaii Tourism Authority will assist as will Hawaiian Air, Japan Airlines, Korean Airlines, etc.

  174. Shoko September 28, 2011 2:11 pm

    Howzit folks!

Speaking of QBs, came across a statistic researched by Rivals. Did you know that the majority of starting QB’s this season are from California (like Woolsey), Texas and Florida?

“California (25), Texas (19) and Florida (15) rank first through third in producing this season’s starting quarterbacks.”

    http://collegefootball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1270793

I think thats an interesting statistic. Figured I pass it along on considering the blog topic today.

    #164, aren’t those Kubler-Ross’ five stages of death? 😉

  175. Shoko September 28, 2011 2:22 pm

LT pass defense ranked 107th nationally. Uh, that isn’t a very good stat.

  176. Shoko September 28, 2011 2:24 pm

Okay, where is everyone? Feel like I’m talking to myself!

  177. Stephen Tsai September 28, 2011 2:25 pm

UH is close on a couple of OL recruits, but the prospects are not ready to pull the trigger yet.

The HC question is going to be a factor until it gets resolved.

  178. Stephen Tsai September 28, 2011 2:26 pm

Spoke with Dykes and some of the LaTech players. They’re pretty funny, and quite gracious. I don’t think they get a lot of media coverage.

  179. madeinhawaii September 28, 2011 2:26 pm

And that’s not going to get resolved till sometime after the season, eh? Is that like after any bowl game?

  180. Stephen Tsai September 28, 2011 2:31 pm

It seems Mack is seeking only a two-year extension.

If the powers decide they want to give him an extension, maybe they also should start looking for his eventual successor. That way there will be no interruptions in recruiting. Everyone will know Mack’s retirement date, and prospects will know which system will be in place in three years.

No forget.. if you are a UH student and you have basketball aspirations… open tryouts for the Men’s team… Oct 2!… Be there, if you dare!

  183. madeinhawaii September 28, 2011 2:38 pm

I mentioned on SportsHawaii that I would like to see Mack usher in the team into the MWC… then let Miano hold the clipboard for the softer half of the 2013 season.. and, depending on how that works out, the more difficult half of the 2014 season. Maybe, we’ll know who our next head coach will be, that way.

  184. madeinhawaii September 28, 2011 2:39 pm

BUT, I don’t want to go through another Coach Nash type experience. It would be nice to see how Miano might be able to fill in as head coach before making the next decision.

  185. kawika49 September 28, 2011 2:42 pm

All I know, is during a very dificult period for me, my 1st Sgt pulled me aside and said; “Sarge, it’s up to you; they depend on you and the good thing about it is, it can only get worse; failure is not an option.”

  186. kev-1 September 28, 2011 2:56 pm

    Couple of thoughts . . .

Sorry, but I have to comment on this . . . I don’t know anything about this Ikaika QB, nor have I seen any tape. I don’t doubt he has talent, or he wouldn’t have been recruited. But I find it hilarious that some of you are arguing that this kid must have “it” if he was going to play at CCSF. Are you kidding me? That is a JC. Every now and then kids have success coming out of JC’s, such as Moniz and Cam Newton (not comparing the two whatsoever), etc. But to say that this QB must be the shizzle because they wanted him to start at a JC is a bit ridiculous.

Now I am sure that Rolo and other coaches have seen things that they like, and hopefully he succeeds, but honestly sometimes it is very funny to read how OVERLY positive some sound. And I’m not being negative about him at all.

Kind of like asking people to vote for Coach Mack for coach of the year. Really? Decent coach who has had moderate success, sprinkled with a couple “what the?!?!?!?” seasons and some want us to vote him coach of the year?

Grant Mack his 2 year extension and work in Rolo as the new HC.

By the way . . . someone earlier asked why JJ is able to land higher QB recruits than we can? Because of JJ’s reputation. Who do you think a young QB prospect knows about, JJ or Mack?

  187. kev-1 September 28, 2011 2:57 pm

MIANO?!?!?!?!?!? Oh my goodness. What has been one of the consistent weaknesses of our teams? And who coaches them? ummm, yes . . . Miano.

#174… Mr. A-House! Aloha to you and your ‘ohana! Was good to finally meet and talk with you on my last trip back home.

There is definitely some interest when we get international players. Take our Ozzy teammates, for example. We’ve recently had visits by Australian media in covering their home grown products. It can and will happen, but we gotta take those first steps. Glad that Coach Gib has that vision too.

    MIH,

I agree. Not planning for the future will bite us in the butt. I know Jim Donovan is thinking about this. The question is does upper campus understand this.

  190. Old Diver September 28, 2011 3:19 pm

Wasn’t our secondary one of the national leaders in interceptions last year?

  191. Derek September 28, 2011 3:20 pm

Did my analysis paralysis today, beside a lot of other games. I’m also factoring in La Techs home field advantage and the fact the Warriors don’t seem to do well on the road, at least the second of 2 consecutive road games. But, the team have been to La Tech 4 times before and they have a 2-2 record. Statistically, Hawaii has the edge. They have more yards offensively vs defense with a difference close to 100 yards, have a better scoring offense and have a better scoring defense. Hawaii has played 2 PAC 12 teams, won one and lost at tough one at UW. We have to chalk up the UNLV game as a horror movie (I will explain in a moment). La Tech has played 2 of the better teams in Conf. USA and 1 SEC team who is good. They played all 3 close. The common denominater is that they lost all 3 games and couldn’t close the deal.

Factoring giving La Tech 7 more points for the home field, I’m calling it Hawaii -31 La Tech -30. It could very come down to a blocked extra point by John Hardy-Tuliau somewhere. I figure the Hawaii kicker(s) will make one field goal. Hawaii will be able to pass as La Tech’s pass defense is vulnerable (evidenced by Houston). La Tech will be blitzing a lot to put pressure on Moniz. Rolovich will have to have a safety value outlet or screen passes ready to slow the rush. Executed perfectly screen passes can mean big yardage and even taken to the house. The unknown is the turnovers. Turnovers is the reason why we lost big in Vegas and I don’t think the team was really focused. I was at that game, and I just felt that UNLV wanted the game more than we did. So, if Hawaii wants to win this game on Saturday, we will have to win the turnover battle and win the special teams battle. Taking care of the ball gives us the chance to stay in the game. A few “big” plays can make all the difference. I don’t know which team will win these battles within the war but I hope Hawaii will play a solid game. Let’s also pray.

  194. Wes'side Warrior September 28, 2011 3:35 pm

Kev-1… Can’t say I agree with you. SMU if finally moving in a positive direction, after years of being a doormat following their infamous death penalty. They’ve got some seriously deep-pocketed backers, and their location in the middle of Texas football country adds to their attractiveness. They weren’t recruiting those blue-chippers prior to Coach Jones’ arrival, because there was no future for that team.

As others have pointed out, Coach Mack’s won-loss record as HC here, up this point, is better than Coach Jones’ record was here, at this same point. So is the football team’s academic standing. Hawaii has consistently been near the top in the nation in total offense and passing offense, and that’s even after Coach Jones left.

And, why not vote for Coach Mack? Remember, we were projected to finish anywhere between 5th – 8th last year, and he directed us to a co-championship. Some of us have faith in our coaches and team… that this can be a similarly productive and successful year.

I understand that there will always be people who need to see and feel the proof before believing, but that doesn’t mean that the rest of us can’t be optimistic in our support. My bus doesn’t need a double-digit-win season to fill up… I’ve got lifetime assigned seats for me and my gang, baby. UH all the way!

  195. Garret September 28, 2011 3:44 pm

Chad Owens always seems to be dangerous when he’s an underdog…I think he’ll have a big game this week.

The chip on kick returner Chad Owens’ shoulders is plain to see.

He isn’t too happy about a recent story listing him as one of the disappointments of the 2011 season even though his combined yardage total of 1,764 is tops in the Canadian Football League by almost 500 yards.

“I never look at stats and see where I’m at, but when somebody says I’m one of the disappointments that ticks me off,”

“But I thanked them. I’ve been told my whole life that I wasn’t good enough, so this just adds more fuel to the fire.”

  196. Garret September 28, 2011 3:46 pm

I think that it is crazy that the Cleveland Browns are kicking fans out of the stadium for *standing*.

According to Stipe, “excessive standing” has become a bit of a no-no at Cleveland Browns Stadium over the last few seasons. Last year, he was also scolded for the offense and three sheriff’s deputies were sent to meet him outside the bathroom to tell him to use his seat more.

“We do not stand all the time,” the 35-year-old explained, referring to the as many as 12 friends and family who share season tickets. “We stand on first down, we stand at the beginning of this game, we stand at kickoff. We stand. We are standers, but we’re also courteous to other people. If somebody says, ‘Hey man, will you sit down?’ Sure, I will love to sit down for you. No problem.”

He said the head of security told him last year that fans can only stand during third and fourth downs and whenever there is a stoppage in the game, like a time out.

  198. kev-1 September 28, 2011 3:51 pm

    Wes’side . . . respectfully taken

I am optimistic about this team, yet remain realistic as well. I still believe that Hawaii can win the WAC. I still think we will have a good season. I still think Mack is a decent coach. But not Coach of the Year material. To me it would be like voting Hawaii as the #1 team in the country just because that is our team and we are optimistic about them. It just doesn’t work that way.

I do agree with your assessment of SMU. I didn’t mean to solely place a QB’s decision based on JJ. I just meant that if you take a QB prospect into a room and ask him to identify JJ or Mack, he would probably be able to tell you JJ.

There is a difference between pessimism and realism. There is also a difference between optismism and optimisim-bias.

  199. madeinhawaii September 28, 2011 3:53 pm

    kev-1,

JJ has the reputation, yes.. but Rolo is building one very quickly…

I believe that SFCC is also where Moniz and Rolo were starters. Year in, year out they wing it out there and win a ton of games. If they choose a gray shirt, walk-on freshman as their starter, that means he’s got a lot of upside compared to their scholarship players. Steel Jantz also went to SFCC… he’s the starter at Iowa State and doing very well there. Joe Ayoob of the Arena Football League also played there and was considered the best JC Quarterback in the nation at the time. Last Year’s #2 QB for Nebraska was a starter ad SFCC. Need I go on?

  204. Garret September 28, 2011 4:08 pm

If they choose a gray shirt, walk-on freshman as their starter, that means he’s got a lot of upside compared to their scholarship players.

I should point out that *none* of the California JCs give out scholarships, so they are all walk-ons. Getting a scholarship from UH is great for someone paying their own way at a JC.

I should also point out that there is a big difference choosing a starter and telling someone that he has a chance to compete for the starting position a year from now. ST very carefully worded what he wrote but I do not think that the starter for next season has been picked already.

  205. Slugger September 28, 2011 4:08 pm

All that said, I welcomed Ikaika to the Warriors earlier today and look forward to following him as he competes for UH’s starting job. Graves has a big lead right now with several years in the system and actual game reps, but the QB battle in training camp will be very competitive.

  209. Wes'side Warrior September 28, 2011 4:11 pm

Yeah, sorry. Got kinda carried away on the bus thing.

    Story time…

When I was in the Army, and especially while overseas, stationed in Korea my second time (1986-1991), and then the following year in Japan, all we’d ever hear was “Michigan this,” or “USC that,” or “Duke the other,” or “UConn whatever.” It was during this period that my UH loyalties rose to a fevered pitch. It was hard to compete with these buddies when they were undefeated, while we struggled to break even. It was at this time that I really got crazy, and had relatives send me whatever UH stuff they could, just so I could show it off. I put stickers everywhere.

While living the past 15 years in Michigan, I finally had the opportunity to stand for a Michigan game in the Big House. (We only sat during commercials, time outs, etc.) Even with a losing record, the tailgating was crazy, and the stadium was sold out. There is a mentality out there, a deep fanaticism for their beloved team(s), that most in Hawaii don’t get to experience and realize. I’ve seen it. I’ve felt it. I wish we could one day get to that point. Some people (read, Tsaikos) I’ve met are there. Just wish the whole state would join in on a more permanent basis.

  210. Hawaiianbod September 28, 2011 4:17 pm

As a Fresno City alumni, yes, Moniz is a former Ram.

  211. madeinhawaii September 28, 2011 4:18 pm

    Ah.. I stand corrected regarding Moniz… thanks…

  212. madeinhawaii September 28, 2011 4:23 pm

Ah here’s a little tidbit I had forgotten..

McMackin was the defensive coordinator at Hawaii in 1999 when he recruited Rolovich out of City College of San Francisco. But when Rolovich was flying to Hawaii to accept the scholarship, McMackin was on a plane to Texas Tech to become defensive coordinator there.

Fortunately, Rolovich stayed in touch with McMackin, who coached the linebackers with the 49ers from 2003-05.

“He made an impression on me,” Rolovich said. “I knew he was with the 49ers and I’m a Niners guy.”

  213. madeinhawaii September 28, 2011 4:27 pm

That was from an old article just before the road game against Fresno, the year Fresno was ranked #22…. UH had gone through all four quarterbacks (on their roster and was about to go through the cycle again… Greg Alexander, Brent Rausch, Tyler Graunke, and Inoke Funaki.) No one imagined Hawaii would make it to a bowl much less have a winning season…

    4 QBs….

    So, is six enough?

Imo the two most important attributes for a QB to have in the RnS are 1) the ability to read defenses and 2) accuracy. The two guys with the best skill sets in this area are Higgins and Shutter. The only knock against Higgins I’ve heard was his arm strength but he looks a lot stronger to me than when I saw him in hs.The model QB type for the RnS is really the Kellen Moore type. His numbers would be off the charts if he was running this type of offense instead of a pro style O. The TTU QBs were all from this mold as well (except taller).

  231. al September 28, 2011 6:08 pm

    small kine observation…

the future of the run n shoot if left in the hands of rolo looks to be evolving right before our eyes.

just looking at the qb’s in camp and yet to come it seems that agile and mobile qb will be the fashion of the new era.

early qb’s like robinson, chang, alexander, were passers and not much afoot or did not have agility required to run the new rns.

alo, godrey, and higgins are all quick footed. it is curious to me that woolsey is in the house because it has been reported that he is more pass than run.

in two years, we could have a system similar to oregon. quack.

  232. kalani September 28, 2011 6:19 pm

I think if it were in Rolo’s hands, he would be recruiting Qbs that were more like him. I think it’s really Coach Mack’s version of the RnS.

    Just my 2 pennies.

Whenever you see big time schools go through the “Fire & Hire” process for the HC, they don’t seem to be overly obsessed with the offensive or defensive style that they bring. I don’t think we should either.

It’s about success on the field, its about can you recruit like a champ, its about can you bring W’s to the program. Frankly that is all I care about too. Just Nguyen baby.

Whomever is chosen as head coach needs to have a good relationship with NFL agents, high schools in our recruiting scope, accessibility, know what it takes to recruit in Hawaii, know the red tape and stone walls that they have to go through to get soap in the locker rooms and know that they are on an island… figuratively and physically.

Kuulei Kabalis of Hilo is doing very well as a libero with K State. She is averaging 3.52 digs per set to date and K State won a thrilling 5 set win over Missouri today, a big 12 opener for both teams. K State is 12-3 overall and not ranked.

I’m partial to ginger ale. One brand is Vernor’s which is known fairly well in Michigan and parts of the Mid-West. However it is not well known (or even known) in Hawaii. And of course, if you are partial to ginger ale, you would probably known and search for the brand as it is not advertised.

Many a football player get their names in different websites such as facebook and scouting reports because of publicity. But the vast majority of players don’t get the publicity that they deserve or if their teams aren’t world-beaters.

Like PRIDE says, he doesn’t even know the majority of the players in the NFL

and so I’m wondering out loud whether Coach Rolovich knows every high school QB in the nation. After all, he is the QB position coach.

And since his job depends on a great deal knowledge of who is out there and who may be available and who may be suitable for our RnS, I have to go along with what he says – he’s the expert, I am not.

So again I repeat – a thousand welcomes, Mr. Woolsey, to our Warrior Ohana.

Looks like Salesian is a division 4 school (500 students or less) is consistently highly ranked in a lower level. Use a 2 back,TE pro set. Woolsey looks comfortable under center in 3 and 5 step drops with good foot speed, quick enough to evade perimeter pass rush. Accurate passer with adequate arm strength. Good progression reads in picking up second and third receivers. Good verbal skills in interview. I was also impressed with other players on team. Team looked well coached. I hope we get a few more of their players.

  306. Hilo-Warrior September 28, 2011 11:09 pm

I played this game 3 times on NCAA12. I won all three matches. The defense played well and got some good turnovers against the young QB for LaTech. One of which went to the house. ST also did better with one Kick Return by Edwards.

Moniz passed consistently over 375 yards and 3 TD a game minimum. In all three games he only threw one INT. 11-1 isn’t bad. Also S-Jax rushed for over 100.

In one game the LaTech QB did pass for 409 yards and 1 TD but threw 2 Int’s and as a team fumbled 2 times in that game. Overall LaTech’s team had 8 total turnovers in the three games.

    So my prediction is

    Hawaii 37

    Latech 13

Dang … I knew there was an article in the StarAdvertiser that got pulled regarding McMackin’s offer to take a 250K cut in salary…

McMackin may feel more pressure to win after negotiations for a contract extension were put on hold earlier this week. McMackin is in the fourth year of a five-year contract that pays $1.1 million per year. According to the Star Advertiser, school officials rejected McMackin?s offer to take a $250,000-a-year pay cut after he took voluntary reductions totaling $154,000 over the first four years of the contract.

  444. Hilo-Warrior September 29, 2011 8:29 am

just a repost cuz my score was in the middle of all the spam.

    Hawaii 37

    Latech 13

Woah! I’m really enjoying the template/theme of this website. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s hard to get that “perfect balance” between user friendliness and appearance. I must say that you’ve done a excellent job with this. In addition, the blog loads extremely quick for me on Chrome. Outstanding Blog!

  449. mctruck September 29, 2011 8:38 am

wuz watching espnu this morning on Tennessee, and from the hc on down to position coaches, constantly emphasizing….”do your job; play-fast.” over and over.

Hope our Warrior coaches are saying the same to our Warriors. gassum!!!

Unless they want another debacle I say resign Coach Mack for the 2years see where that leads us an keep a close eye on a possible successor but waiting till the end of season sounds like a bad idea to me June Jones anyone!

  456. madeinhawaii September 29, 2011 9:38 am

Maybe Coach Mack should put his feelers out to see if any other University would want him and his team for the terms he outlined, eh? That might light a fire under UH’s bottom.

  457. (Jesse) James September 29, 2011 9:42 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!!!

Anybody have rice??? I need it with my spam….LOL

  458. (Jesse) James September 29, 2011 9:44 am

Agree with ST, if Mack only wants a two year extension and is looking to retire soon, UH should do what a lot of other colleges have been doing recently with their “Coach in Waiting” programs….basically name Rolo, or whoever, as the next head coach in a few years. That would keep him here…and ease the transition period as well as keep recruits happy/interested in the program.
