Inoke Funaki strikes a pose.

UH’s version of the Quarterback Challenge started with handshake greetings yesterday afternoon.
“It’s good,” Inoke Funaki said of the arrival of JC transfers Greg Alexander and Brent Rausch. “There’s strength in numbers.”
Funaki and Tyler Graunke exited spring practice as the co-No. 1 quarterbacks. Coach Greg McMackin promised to open the competition in training camp, with a starter expected to be named at least a week before the season opener against Florida.
The open competition was ” a big factor in me wanting to come here,” Alexander said.
Alexander was recruited after Rausch gave UH his verbal commitment. “There’s going to be competition everywhere you go,” Rausch said. “I don’t mind it.”
Rausch said he received a late recruiting push from Southern Methodist, where June Jones and four assistants relocated.
“They gave me a call the day before I signed here,” Rausch said. “I didn’t even call them back.”
Rausch said he chose UH because of “the offense. The people out here are really nice. It’s paradise.”
Alexander said he has been a fan of the Warriors’ four-wide offense.
“I watched them sling it around (on TV),” he said.
Funaki, who led the unsupervised workouts yesterday, was impressed with the newcomer quarterbacks.
“They have something you can’t teach: height,” Funaki said. Raush is listed at 6 feet 4 and 190 pounds, and Alexander is listed at 6-5 and 240.
“When I first saw him, I wanted to know: Who’s the d-end?” Funaki said of Alexander. Quarterback coach Nick Rolovich “said, ‘This is Greg. A quarterback.’ He’s a big boy.”
Rausch and Alexander kept busy working out with their JC teams this past spring.
“I was lifting and throwing,” Rausch said.
Alexander said: “I would lift three days a week, run three days a week.”

* * *

Quarterback Shane Austin, who has recovered from a fracture in his right foot, and receivers Joe Avery and Royce Pollard worked out yesterday morning.
The three roommates are living on the North Shore this summer.
“They have to drive in every day,” Funaki said, smiling.
Funaki should know. He was raised on the North Shore, and used to make the same drive for two years. He now shares a place with teammates in Manoa.

Linebackers Adam Leonard and Solomon Elimimian will represent UH at the WAC Football Media Preview in Salt Lake City July 22-24.

Bob Coolen said he expects to award the 2007 WAC championship bracelets during a women’s volleyball match this fall. He said everyone from that team except Justine Smethurst (who is pitching for Australia’s Olympic team) will be in town. Coolen said he wants the donors to be thanked in a visible setting, which is why he will not distribute the bracelets during the summer. He wanted to distribute them during the WAC Tournament, but UH was eliminated in the semifinals. As we all know, Pomai spearheaded the fundraising drive for the bracelets. Big mahalo to Pomai and the other donors.

That’s our Pomai on the left. And that’s our RainbowCliff on the right. I swear RainbowCliff can dribble a basketball with his hand in a shaka sign.

  14. Stephen Tsai May 29, 2008 9:00 am

I thought Garret’s post was interesting: the sun has earth-sized tornadoes that we can view with our equipment.
I thought one of the basic rules was not to stare at the sun.

  15. Stephen Tsai May 29, 2008 9:02 am

My picture didn’t come out, but Mike Washington was wearing an Under Armour body suit. He looked like the Silver Surfer. Or an Olympic speed skater.

Hey, congrats to Bonar for making it to No. 1. That might be the fastest lurker-to-1st ascension in the history of blogging.

  19. homey ® May 29, 2008 9:16 am

Fun times for the QB’s this season!

Last season it was all Colt Colt Colt. This season…who is going to step up and be the starter? Will it be an incumbent or will it be a noob? Ahhhh, exciting times.

Then there are the receivers. It will be difficult for the incoming recruits to grab a starting spot but ohhhhhh the excitement.

Now for the RB’s. We have thunder, lightning, and the Tasmanian devil…soooo exciting!

Will the o-line shake off the doubts? We’ll see how good they are at alligator wrestling.

D-Fence – Live up to the hype!

  20. LizKauai [Believer] May 29, 2008 9:18 am

Libre’s Auntie Rhoda was at Rotary on Tuesday. We are PUMPED for our RB’s this year – and the fund got a bunch of happy dollars from both of us 😉

  34. al May 29, 2008 9:42 am

homey….i think that the oline had a good year in 07. i really don’t see the group as a liability. in fact, i believe we have a lot of depth and the staff will have the greater challenge of naming the starters.

although they say that the oline will also rotate guys in, this is the unit that rarely at any level gets rotated as much as any other group. i believe though that we will have a “set” by the third or fourth game.

the cream always rises to the top.

  45. Garret May 29, 2008 10:07 am

    Jayson,

Thank you for the link to the Colt article! That article isn’t on Google yet–sometimes things never show up there.

  46. Garret May 29, 2008 10:08 am

    ST,

With the equipment NASA has now, they can study the sun for interesting details and even take photos of the sun.

  47. Garret May 29, 2008 10:09 am

Brief mention of a Warrior recruit.

Eleven former Compton football players have signed national letters of intent, according to new head coach Jason Brown.

The list is led by wide receiver Dustin Blount and free safety Anthony Wilcox. Blount has signed with Hawaii and Wilcox signed with Arizona, both Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I) schools.

  48. Garret May 29, 2008 10:10 am

Congratulation to Chad Kapanui for earning Player of the Week honors!

Kapanui, quarterback for the Sioux City Bandits, shares Offensive Player of the Week honors for his efforts in last week’s game. In Sioux City’s 79-60 win over the Colorado Ice, he completed 16 of 25 passes for 212 yards and seven touchdowns. Kapanui added five rushing yards to finish his evening with 217 yards of total offense. This weekend, he and his teammates will host the Sioux Falls Storm Saturday evening at the Tyson Events Center.

  49. Garret May 29, 2008 10:11 am

Adam and Sol are perfect choices to represent the Warriors–senior leaders who have proven themselves on the field.

  50. Hawaiiroller May 29, 2008 10:17 am

    Morning all. 🙂

Adam and Solomon, great representatives for UH.

    Love those pictures ST.

Thanks again to Pomai for all the organizing for the women’s bracelets.

A 6’5″, 240 lb QB! Wow! Good luck to all the QBs.

  51. Buffoman May 29, 2008 10:23 am

Heard from a pretty good source that the o-line remains a troublesome area. Hope that observation is wrong as it would appear that the pieces behind that line have real potential. O-line was a problem in the Sugar Bowl and now we’re going to start the season with another SEC speed rush team.

  52. d1shima(tilted) May 29, 2008 10:25 am

    Jayson,
    Thanks. Great read. Go Colt!

    Stephen,
JMHO but I don’t think your camera qualifies as “sun-certified” equipment 😉

  53. Stephen Tsai May 29, 2008 10:30 am

Well, if things don’t work out with the offensive line, maybe Alexander can move there.

  54. Stephen Tsai May 29, 2008 10:35 am

This story bothers me a lot.
I like Clapp, and I know he was following Frazier’s policy. But you can’t say that you were going to pay for your children but not tell the people you invited they should do the same. If he felt it was wrong — and there’s debate about that — then he should have shared his concerns with everyone else. Now it looks like he introduced a policy, then changed his mind. That’s not fair to the others. And it really made Marilyn look bad.
    http://honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080529/NEWS01/805290364/1001

  55. Kekoa (iPhone) May 29, 2008 10:45 am

Let’s not forget A-House as the *Bagman* on this end. Mahalo sir!

  56. Stretch May 29, 2008 10:59 am

    Re: Clapp

What is the purpose of this article?? Is it to make Clapp look good or to make others look bad??

It says that he was “invited to bring a spouse and two children with him at UH’s expense under the athletic department’s policy”. I am sure that Marilyn had the same invitation.

Later in the article, Mollway says, “with regard to children, we were told children would be going” because it would be a hardship on some families to leave them behind, “but university (funds) would not be spent for children.”

Was it or was it not in the policy that he the children would be paid for?? I am sure Clapp knows the policy since

  57. Stretch May 29, 2008 11:00 am

    ooops, sorry, cut short

I am sure that Clapp knows the policy since he was “in charge of of implementing then-athletic director Herman Frazier’s travel policy “

  58. Bowzo's Rule May 29, 2008 11:03 am

    Hi ST:
Was just wondering if you or any other Tsaikos could explain what an “unsupervised workout” is? Do the players just work out together or do they get some instructions or imput from the coaches? Just how unsupervised is it? Thanks.

  59. James May 29, 2008 11:03 am

G’nalo…Stretch will be holding instigating classed during the summer….mwahahahahaha

  60. A-House May 29, 2008 11:11 am

homey, koakane, and others whow will purchase tickets in the “south end-zone” – when time permits during the game, take a peek at Sec D, yellow/nosebleed level, row 10, you will find A-House family and EthelM sitting with the Roberts bus drivers.

    we love our seats!!!!!

  61. A-House May 29, 2008 11:16 am

    Gigi:

I watched L&L last night with great interest because of Amemiya as a “potential” UH associate AD under Jim D where he can learn and possibly be Jim’s successor.

He is very knowledgeable, articulate, and personable.

  62. LizKauai [Believer] May 29, 2008 11:21 am

A-House- Did you get your renewal call yet?

    Woo Hoo!
    Football!!!

  63. FloridaTed May 29, 2008 11:23 am

    Morning, again, gang.

Yeah, let the competition begin. Man, all this potential, exciting. Great pictures, Tsai-Meister.

  64. troll May 29, 2008 11:33 am

Are coaches allowed at these practices ? I think it’s great that Inoke is helping the new QB’S even with the competition for the starting job. Go Warriors !!!

  65. Ronnie May 29, 2008 11:40 am

Bowzo’s Rule & troll – My understanding (which could be kind of limited as my vacation day draws near) is that coaches are not allowed to be at the unsupervised workouts or practices. The players run the workouts and practices. I think the only contact they are allowed with a coach is with the strength coach, but I’m not sure.

  66. homey ® May 29, 2008 11:49 am

al – It’s not that the o-line is a liability but after the SB many have mentioned the breakdown of the o-line as the main reason for the Warriors inability to click on offense. This has created uncertainty for the upcoming season since the Warriors will still have many of the same personnel returning. Will the vulnerabilities still exists? I don’t know. That’s why I wrote “shake off the doubts”.

The o-line will need to step it up and erase all doubts and it all starts in the Swamp. What a test! Exciting times!

  67. homey ® May 29, 2008 11:51 am

Kekoa – Whereabouts on the sideline are you talking about? Sounds very interesting to me since the UH staffers haven’t called me YET!!! 😡

  68. oldie May 29, 2008 11:52 am

Just got a call from UH on upgrading my seats. They said nothing available where I want to upgrade to so I’m keeping my current seats. Apparently, things are going well so better seats are not available.

  69. homey ® May 29, 2008 11:54 am

Ronnie is so smaht! Can’t wait to see her in action…singing of course.

    homey is a driver?

  90. Jason May 29, 2008 12:48 pm

So Stephen better be at that volleyball game to represent us! I might decide to go to that game too, if I can.

I think two of the keys to O-line play this year, particularly against Florida, will be when the QBs take the snap from under center and the running game. The defense can’t afford to line up with wider splits that way. Besides, I think they will be alright. AhSoon is more of a guard, so moving him inside works well. Got some athletic tackles in Hisatake, Letuli, and Kia who should compete for starting jobs. And I haven’t seen any film on him, but I’m curious about LaCount as well.

  91. homey ® May 29, 2008 12:51 pm

    d1shima – I’m a wannabe law enforcement officer. 10-35.

  92. d1shima [sez:] May 29, 2008 12:53 pm

    homey,
Oh, that explains the handcuffs. 😯

  93. d1shima [sez:] May 29, 2008 12:55 pm

….but what about the daily delivery of fruit?

  94. g-nalo May 29, 2008 12:55 pm

“And I haven’t seen any film on him, but I’m curious about LaCount as well.”

Jason – isn’t he from Kailua High School? if so no wooorrrrrry……..haa

  95. d1shima [sez:] May 29, 2008 12:57 pm

    Nau Pau Lun Chau Wah!

  96. James May 29, 2008 1:05 pm

d1…ha ha ha…had to do that almost every day for four years……

  97. James May 29, 2008 1:05 pm

    loa is on scene somewhere…maybe he’ll be 10 – 9 a little later…..

  98. homey ® May 29, 2008 1:08 pm

d1shima – Yep, I got the whole getup…holster, nightstick, pepper spray, vest, shades, and 2-way radio. Oh, and also the belt with the bullet holders.

  99. James May 29, 2008 1:09 pm

homey…I don’t have a fetish for school boy clothes…..now girls clothes on the other hand…mwahahahahaha….just kidding…

The problem with the o-line at the sugar bowl, IMHO, was not so much the O-line but more of the play calling. Keeping Colt in the shotgun almost exclusively allowed the DEs to line up wider. With their speed, they were able to get to the outside quicker. If we ran some inside stuff and had Colt go under center a few times, it may have kept the DEs honest and Colt wouldn’t have been under as much pressure. Tebow to go into politics after his football career is over?

But the day Tebow retires from football, he will have a strong political future.

Let’s go back to his April visit to the Florida Legislature, shall we?

In that session, which was front-page news in the Gainesville Sun, Tebow was recognized with a resolution and a “medallion of excellence,” the highest honor for a Florida citizen, for, of course, winning the Heisman Trophy, but also for such demonstrations of character as his missionary work in orphanages in the Phillipines, where those surgeries were conducted.

Even Governor Charlie Crist, a onetime college quarterback at Wake Forest, rising star in the GOP, and potential vice presidential candidate is curious about Tebow’s future:

Crist asked Tebow if he was interested in a political career.

“That might be a possibility,” Tebow said, adding that he is a Republican. But for now, Tebow said he is interested in completing his degree in family, youth and community sciences that will help him develop a career focused on working with nonprofit groups and underprivileged youth in addition to whatever his football future holds.

“That’s good stuff,” Crist told him.

So we know the thought of political service has crossed Tebow’s mind.

Pretty funny that SMU’s first 2 commits for 2009 are on defense, including the 3-star DE who gave a “soft verbal” commit today. But does it really count as a commitment when the recruit says this:

“I’m committed to SMU. I’m just keeping the door open.”

Contrast that with the Daniel Smith case where he wants a verbal offer to be binding. Here this recruit is saying that he’s accepting SMU’s offer but he’s going to keep looking around. He even specifically named Baylor and Kansas as schools who are recruiting him that he hopes extends him an offer. There are a zillion cases like this where it is clear that a player’s commit doesn’t actually mean that he’s bound to the University he’s committed to…but Daniel Smith would like to make the process binding in the other direction.

  110. Da Punchbowl Kid May 29, 2008 1:21 pm

QB or not QB? Who will the QB be, that is the question. I would’nt like to be the guy who decides. So much talent at the spot. It’s definitely going to be worth it to go to some of the informal throwing practices and take a gander at the lads. Hey, a question for the blog geniuses or any who think they might know: have we ever had as much depth or talent to choose from at the QB position?

Washington State just kicked this incoming QB off their team so he won’t be the QB against UH this season.

Quarterback Calvin Schmidtke will not be throwing passes for the Washington State Cougars after all.

The Lakes High standout, who was The News Tribune’s 2007 All-Area co-player of the year, will be released from his national letter of intent for a series of traffic citations and other criminal charges.

Seven of his 11 citations in the past 18 months have been traffic-related stops, but Schmidtke will be at Fircrest Municipal Court this morning facing DUI and other alcohol and drug-related charges.

Schmidtke passed for 2,724 yards and 37 touchdowns last fall, earning him MVP honors in the Western Cascade Conference, and leading the Lancers to the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs.

In mid-November, he was arrested on a DUI charge – something WSU coaches were aware of when they started recruiting him a month later.

WSU offered Schmidtke a full athletic scholarship in January, and the Lakes senior gave an oral commitment to the Cougars while canceling a trip to Arizona. He had four other scholarship offers.

One unnamed WSU official said Tuesday that Schmidtke was told on his recruiting trip to Pullman he had to steer clear of further legal troubles. That did not happen, because in March – three weeks after he signed his letter of intent to play at WSU – the teenager was once again facing criminal charges in a separate incident.

  118. homey ® May 29, 2008 1:38 pm

DPK – Think of it this way…Year in and year out JJ says, “This year’s crop of QB’s are as deep and talented as any… “. So yes, there have been years where there have been QB’s as deep and talented as this years QB’s.

The biggest difference this year is there is no returning starting QB though Graunke could be considered a starter since he did start a few games. When you look at the overall D1 starting experience at QB there isn’t that much. That’s what makes it exciting because everyone (maybe not everyone) will get a shot to show what he can do. The coaches are gonna say things like, “each QB has their strengths and weaknesses”, “At this point in time it’s difficult to name a starter”, “They all are progressing” , “So and so looked good today” , “We’ll go back and look at the film…”…

But realistically, one of them will outshine the others and the coaches will pick that up immediately.

Heard from a pretty good source that the o-line remains a troublesome area. Hope that observation is wrong as it would appear that the pieces behind that line have real potential. O-line was a problem in the Sugar Bowl and now we’re going to start the season with another SEC speed rush team.

    Re: Clapp

What is the purpose of this article?? Is it to make Clapp look good or to make others look bad??

The purpose of this article is to expose the hiprocarcy that has been going on the past few weeks. Damage control is in full gear and as usual is not working. The interesting part was that the person (Clapp) in charge of putting together the list was able to redact the redactions. This obviously was done to add to the coverup. I wonder what Donovan is thinking? We have an associate AD that the legislature doesn’t trust do to misleading information provided them, an a fan base that is being messed with. Trust in the department is critical because UH depends on donations to help with the programs. And who put Clapp in charge of the list anyway, Hindshaw?
OK going off the Kool Aid.

  183. James May 29, 2008 3:01 pm

    ST….

Aged sake, or “koshu,” is a topic I am wary of breaching. There are a number of reasons for this reticence, not least of which is that aged sake represents such a miniscule portion of all sake that is out there. Aged sake is hard to get, quite expensive, and overall a totally different animal than regular sake – and certainly NOT better in any unequivocal sense. Nor is there any one proper way to age sake, nor any one universally agreed upon way that aged sake should turn out. In one sense, it amounts to – more than anything else – a diversion in the sake world. Fresh sake is really what warrants most of out attention.

  212. homey ® May 29, 2008 3:42 pm

Quip – I bet Mac doesn’t get sacked by the Legislature.

  213. LizKauai [Believer] May 29, 2008 3:42 pm

    Welcome back, PL!

    hiho

  214. Da Punchbowl Kid May 29, 2008 3:43 pm

He writes the posts. He takes the pictures and posts them. AND he’s a comedian to boot! Har. He’ll NEVER have nicer hair than the Princess!

  215. g-nalo May 29, 2008 3:44 pm

  216. koakane™ May 29, 2008 3:44 pm

  220. homey ® May 29, 2008 3:47 pm

g-nalo – She is Okinawan, Chinese, Portuguese, and Hawaiian.

  221. Da Punchbowl Kid May 29, 2008 3:47 pm

    koakane,
I’m willing to bet he has a great career as a coach here. I’m also willing to bet that Quip won’t last long as a poster here.

  222. Stephen Tsai May 29, 2008 3:47 pm

Leila knew she was being photographed. That’s why she’s pretending to read yesterday’s paper.

  223. Da Punchbowl Kid May 29, 2008 3:48 pm

No gigi, just takin’ a short break. Back to work…

  224. gigi-hawaii © May 29, 2008 3:50 pm

DPK, I am not cracking the whip. haha, feel free to stay.

  225. Stephen Tsai May 29, 2008 3:51 pm

    Legislature doesn’t control UH hiring.
Mack has a guaranteed five-year contract.

  226. Quip May 29, 2008 3:51 pm

For one million ($1,000,000) a year, if braddah cannot produce one winnah, I doubt the legislacha goin spend anada three million ($3,000,000) on one coach before calling it a game. Dey not dat stupid, ah?

For one million a yeeah, you expect one winna, ah?

You got all dem zeros, braddah?

  227. homey ® May 29, 2008 3:53 pm

Quip – Do you wanna bet?

  228. Quip May 29, 2008 3:54 pm

Tell dat to da former chair of da regents, braddah sai.

  229. LizKauai [Believer] May 29, 2008 3:55 pm

So what, Quip, you gonna be paht of da 12th man and cheer for da team or what???

  230. Da Punchbowl Kid May 29, 2008 3:56 pm

The legislature doesn’t hire and fire anybody at UH, that’s why I said that. I still think he’ll be a winner. BTW “Quip”, I already think I know who you really are, your pidgin is showin’. No worry I keep um to myself. 😉

  231. g-nalo May 29, 2008 3:56 pm

eh g-nalo knew you stay around da corner someplace.

what practicing singing ……………… oh sorry meant golf swing

both are hopeless in my case, but i seem to hold my own with eating. haa

  232. g-nalo May 29, 2008 3:58 pm

g-nalo – She is Okinawan, Chinese, Portuguese, and Hawaiian.

dbK not to worry coach mac going be here long. only saying if boo birds come out will be in those years.

  234. James May 29, 2008 3:59 pm

quip…the regents are a different story and they are confirmed by the Senate, not the Legislature. The Regents are not UH employees such as professors, coaches, custodians, etc.

  237. homey ® May 29, 2008 4:01 pm

    g-nalo – I agree! the chinese part…

Quip – That’s why there are checks and balances between the branches of government. But you already knew that.

  238. gigi-hawaii © May 29, 2008 4:03 pm

    hi, Mojo. What’s the reference?

  239. Da Punchbowl Kid May 29, 2008 4:05 pm

Da Hawaiian does it for the Princess. Da Hawaiian allowed all those other races.

  240. homey ® May 29, 2008 4:06 pm

hey, that Mick Jagger looked so young — 1969. Didn’t understand a word they sang, though. Nice tune, Jason.

  256. chawan_cut May 29, 2008 4:34 pm

wow, she has a TV right above her desk? you guys all have TVs by your desks? i guess that is your guy’s job though.
and does she collect all the newspapers she’s in? that’s a huge pile in front of her.
i shouldn’t talk though. my desk has no desktop. its all covered with junk.

  257. WarriorMojo May 29, 2008 4:36 pm

Wow, Jason, that was a great video you linked. I’d never seen that one before. The studio version of this song has the greatest cowbell/drums intro ever. Best Keef riff. A pho-king classic.

  258. wafan May 29, 2008 4:45 pm

    Ralph . . .

If you are lurking. Thank you for the confirmation on the Mitsunaga family. I forgot you have connections to Lana’i.

  259. wafan May 29, 2008 4:48 pm

    Chawan-Cut . . .

I completely understand the thing about desk/table clutter. I have four tables in my lab that are completely covered with “stuff”. A few years ago one of my girls got so disgusted she did me a favor and cleaned up one of the tables. I nearly had a coronary. I could not find a single thing for weeks after that — until I rearranged my stuff so I knew where everything was.

A place for everything, and everything on my tables and desks.

  260. chawan_cut May 29, 2008 4:50 pm

yeah, my desk is full of useful junk. and at least i know if i need something, its there, somewhere. but at least its there, and not thrown away.

  261. LizKauai [Believer] May 29, 2008 4:55 pm

Ralph and wafan- When I see my Lanai friend, I will let her know I know people who know her fam- but I don’t know any names she might know because we know each other by handles, you know?

  262. wafan May 29, 2008 5:04 pm

I do not think they would remember me but they might remember the band guys from LCC (that was us) who came over to work with the Lana’i bands way back in the 70’s.

    So,

If there are any other Washington Tsai-ko’s out there interested in going down to the Warrior/Beaver game please speak up! Maybe we can arrange car-pooling, etc.

    That’s not Leila’s desk. That’s Bart Asato’s desk.
We have two TVs in the sports department. We used to only have one, and it faced away from the writers. (All of the writers, except Wes and Leila, are on the makai side of the room.)
Hey, maybe I should just take photos …

  279. al May 29, 2008 5:20 pm

yah, liz you are right. but, i am too lazy to go read the past comments.

  286. wafan May 29, 2008 5:45 pm

The latest invention by the Japanese will be totally useless for any Tsai-ko. They created a mini-ramen bowl complete with noodles! Of course the bowl is truly a mini-bowl at a mere 1/25,000 of an inch across. The “noodles” are also in there. The bowl and noodles are made from nano-tubes.

  287. Jayson May 29, 2008 6:00 pm

Don’t know if anyone else saw this WiiFit review, but I was ROTFLMAO.

According to the game’s virtual fitness expert, people with an uneven center will unnaturally compensate for the imbalance, causing unnecessary strain and poor posture.

To improve that balance, “Wii Fit” guides your customized Mii character through a series of mini-games, strength training sessions, aerobics exercises and yoga poses.

But as with any fitness program, you first must take the dreaded “before” measurements so you can eventually achieve “after” results.

I thought I had originally set up my Mii character to look just like me. But I apparently took quite a bit of latitude with my Mii’s body shape, and the game used the Balance Board’s weight sensors to make some, uh, “corrections.”

It was equally hilarious and depressing to watch my Mii look down in horror as his body ballooned to more accurate proportions.

  289. djmitcho May 29, 2008 6:04 pm

Is the legislature now off the hook for the money they were all so anxious to throw at UHAD?

NOTE TO BLOG REGULARS: Most of this post deals with the Board of Regents. If this is not of any interest to you, please skip over to the next post.

But before that, would somebody please tell me what CR means in the posts about booze? Used to drink when I was young but gave it up on August 31, 1981, at 11:37 pm after deciding that I’d rather eat the calories than drink them.

With respect to the Board of Regents, they are not directly appointed by the Senate but confirmed – or not – after being selected by the Governor from a list prepared by Regents Candidates Advisory Council. The Senate cannot fire the Regents nor can the Governor, but the latter can force a letter of resignation.

The full story reaches back more than eight years ago when the issues about (Democratic) administrative and perceived legislative interference in the affairs of the University of Hawai`i System finally led to a Constitutional Amendment which was approved in the fall of 2000 by a margin of over three to one.

It was not an easy task to set the transition in motion and, in fact, it wasn’t until the 2007 legislative session that the last of all the implementing bills in many different areas were finally enacted into law.

The shift to autonomy was being fought voraciously by Lingle’s new appointees to the Board of Regents which eventually prompted the legislation in 2007 expanding the Board and setting up the Regents Candidates Advisory Council, a bill which was vetoed by Lingle and overridden by the Legislature. The Council began its work late last summer.

Under the re-organized BOR, there are now 15 seats. Currently through June 30, 2008, ten of the positions are filled. Of that number, five individuals had their terms extended by one year to June 30, 2008.

The regular terms of two individuals will expire on June 30, 2008.

The terms of three individuals will expire in 2009 (2) & 2010.

In mid-February, a list of 22 names to fill 12 upcoming vacancies was sent to the Governor broken down into six categories with the number of seats is in parentheses after each category: At-Large Student (1); At-Large (2); Hawai`i County (2), City & County of Honolulu (5), Kaua`i County (1), Maui County (1).

Included in the List of 22 were four current Regents. The Governor selected only Kitty Lagareta to be considered by the State Senate, but she was not confirmed.

She also withdrew her At-Large Student nominee after the Senate Education Committee deferred further action on his nomination.

The following individuals have been confirmed and will take office officially on July 1, 2008: Artemio Baxa, Maui; Carl Carlson, West Hawai`i; Harvey Tajiri, East Hawai`i; Howard Karr & Dennis Hirota, C&C of Honolulu; Teena Rasmusssen, At-Large.

Therefore, on July 1, 2008, these six new Regents will join the three who are in mid-term.

    This leaves the following seats “vacant” – At-Large Student(1); At-Large(1); C&C of Honolulu(3); Kaua`i(1).

The Governor is expected to extend the terms of many of the current Regents for another year and is hoping for a more friendly Senate next time around.

I know they said that the entire complex will be completed by 2011, BUT will the field turf itself be done by August as JD said?

Or has this large donation changed things up?

KEKOA: I tried to get to the BOR meeting in Kapolei this morning but got lost. The two places I stopped to ask for directions weren’t able to help me out. Perhaps you could take me for a tour of your town in exchange for lunch on me for you & your dad.

On my way back, I went to the Stadium Authority meeting for a couple of hours before leaving for a third meeting at City Hall.

Aloha Stadium in pretty hard to miss even for folks who don’t know the area very well. Watch for some really interesting changes in Stadium-slash-parking lot regulations between now and the first home game.

Women’s VB schedule is out – here are the opening games.

08/29/08 UCLA vs. Ohio 5:00 PM
    08/29/08 PENN STATE 7:00 PM
08/30/08 Penn State vs. UCLA 5:00 PM
    08/30/08 OHIO 7:00 PM
08/31/08 Ohio vs. Penn State 3:00 PM
    08/31/08 UCLA 5:00 PM

Guess that lets out the SSC for a Swamp Blog Party earlier in the day.

Off to still another meeting – DrDoc will be in Waimanalo for his while I will be in Kane`ohe for mine. Will be recording the LOST season finale but probably will be too tired to watch it until tomorrow night.

    Have a good evening everyone.

  312. SojuNTaegu May 29, 2008 6:41 pm

Nothing like going to lunch and watching the Lakers win! What a game!

  313. Pauoa Boy May 29, 2008 6:41 pm

  316. d1shima [sez:] May 29, 2008 6:44 pm

OK, they really not playing P.E. football anymore.

Mack just said on the news that when the new field is ready, they going practice in sun, rain, sleet , snow, watever!

    Yeah, baby.

(Note to myki and sj-macro: When get sleet and snow I will jus’ rely on your reports, okay?)

  317. SojuNTaegu May 29, 2008 6:44 pm

I agree, it will be the 11th time the Lakers and the Celtics have met with the Celtics winning the first 8 and the Lakers the last 2.

It will be a great series…

  318. Pauoa Boy May 29, 2008 6:46 pm

I like Coach Mack style, he seem so calm and soft spoken, but he got the killah instinct.

  319. d1shima [sez:] May 29, 2008 6:46 pm

Oh almost 6:30 (despite what the blog clock sez). Gotta hustle to gigi’s house….
    It’s dinnah time!

  320. Pauoa Boy May 29, 2008 6:47 pm

I would take the Lakers, think they playing the best basketball right now, Kobe is unstoppable, the Celtics sometimes I dunno if they playing for real or just going through the motions

  321. wafan May 29, 2008 6:52 pm

    Pauoa Boy . . .

Okay, the next time I ask what and where, please do not answer. It took me several minutes to wipe off my keyboard. I think I am having hunger pains now. Dang.

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

    Time to check for cracks.

See you all at zero-dark thirty! Be here or be a regular rectangle.

  332. SteveM May 29, 2008 9:16 pm

Hmmmm. Al and I were noticing that there is almost two distinct groups that attend weekday lunch Cattle Calls versus Saturday dinner Karaoke Calls… except for a handful. Looks like they are converging tomorrow to help Al cure his “problem”… 😐 Mwaahahahahaa

Gotta warn my cuz to expect a “handfull” tomorrow…put on extra cooks and stock the refers.

  333. BG May 29, 2008 9:26 pm

    Aloha Tsaikos!

Interesting VB schedule that W-Doc posted. Actually, if the Gater game is scheduled for 6pm EST like they did their 2nd game of 2007, it would be perfecto for the SSC! The game would start at 1pm HST because of Daylight Saving Time and would perfectly dovetail into the first game of the VB doubleheader. Lessee…4 hours of football followed by 5 hours of volleyball. Lasting impressions…no voice and sore butt!!! Gotta love the possibilities!

  334. jm2375 May 29, 2008 9:42 pm

    uhhh… what’s tomorrow?

  335. Jason May 29, 2008 9:43 pm

BG: 6 PM EDT = Noon HST, not 1 PM.

  336. d1shima [sez:] May 29, 2008 9:48 pm

Daylight Savings Time ends on the 1st Sunday in November so Jason is correct.

  338. Garret May 29, 2008 9:52 pm

I noticed that when this Miami reporter wrote about Miami’s new smash-ball offense, he noted Reagan being an integral part of it. The other thing I noticed is that he has Reagan at 270 pounds–has he lost that much weight?

Finally, you should take a close look at what the Miami offense promises to be: A gang of bullies. This won’t be a quick-strike, down-the-field unit. They will be a bruising running team first and foremost. They will try to go through rather than over defenses. Given the added girth of Justin Smiley and Jake Long up front, the return (everyone hopes) of 232-pound Ronnie Brown and 225-pound Ricky Williams at RB, the addition of 265-pound TE Anthony Fasano and with 270-pound Reagan Mauia at FB, this team will RUN the ball.

  339. Garret May 29, 2008 9:54 pm

This note about how Miami is thin at the WR spot is nice, as it is another indication that Bess picked a good team to go to. I think that Bess has a real shot to get some playing time this season, which is fairly unusual for an undrafted free agent.

The Dolphins woeful lack of talent at wide receiver just got thinner. When Perry was signed to a one-year contract, former Cincinnati teammate T.J. Whoseyourmamma was disappointed. “That guy is talented,” Whoseyourmamma said of Perry. “That’s a loss for us.” So I initially could see Perry, experienced and quick, giving the Dolphins receiver corps some of the lightning it definitely lacks beyond Ted Ginn. But now Perry is waived/injured and one must assume the team will seek other help at the position.

  350. momotaro May 29, 2008 11:03 pm

    Garret re: #109

The difference between the SMU recruit’s soft verbal and Daniel Smith is that Smith is alleging his offer from UH was on the condition that he not entertain offers from other schools, so if he was approached by other schools he could take no visits and had to tell the other schools that he was committed to UH, effectively discouraging other schools from recruiting him.

  351. momotaro May 29, 2008 11:17 pm

    DPK re: #110

In 2000, after Dan Robinson graduated, UH brought in Timmy Chang and two highly-regarded JC QB’s (Nick Rolovich and Jared Flint) to compete at QB. Chad Kapanui was also part of that class.

    Howzit Mei Ling.

Great story this morning’s news on the Ching donation to UH Athletics. Everybody making speeches, photo ops. Even had Carl Clapp’s pix on tv. But our Jimmy D really humble.

Funny story. Six years ago I put a bust of Shakespeare next to da fence by da road by my mudda’s house on da Panaewa ceded lands. Rain an shine for three years, my mudda had to look at da bust as she drove in an outta her driveway. One day I drove ovah my mudda’s house an noticed da bust was missin. I figured somebody wen aihui da bugga. Two days latah da bust was back, but sumbody had shoepolished da face brown.

Da moral ah da story? IMHO Jimmy D is now a brownie. I say he can hang on da ceded lands. He give good kine vibes, mo bettah dan one ho’o punipuni mai ho’o palai maka.

  394. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc May 30, 2008 8:48 am

    Aloha Everyone:

Best way to get a new blog up is to post something close to No. 400.

According to Donovan’s presentation at the Stadium Authority meeting yesterday with respect to the ticket price reductions, most of them will be for children, youth & UH students in certain sections, primarily the North End zone. There may be some family packages coming out as well.

At this point, I have not heard about reductions planned for single sales for seniors, adults & season ticket holders in premium seating areas.. That doesn’t mean they aren’t coming, however.

What would really sell the seats in the Stadium would be two very large screen screens on the two end zones with the capability of showing the game live. Do such things exist? If so, corporate sponsors might be willing to pick up the costs.

Someone asked earlier about the total costs of the Cooke Field and all the bells & whistles project. According to documents distributed earlier this year, the total cost at that point was expected to come close to $9 million. The Ching constribution plus the funds allocated in the state budget will require probably an additional $2 million to be raised over the next two to three years. That’s doable.

  395. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc May 30, 2008 8:51 am

    Whoops!!!

    Ching constribution = Ching contribution

  396. Garret May 30, 2008 9:06 am

Dispute during this women’s kickball league resulted in a huge fight!

ampa Police officers had to break up a fight involving players and fans at a sanctioned kickball game at Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park last night, according to a Tampa Police report.

Officers responded to the park at around 7:30 pm last night, after a woman called police saying a 100 people were involved in a fight on the sidelines of the game. When they arrived officers did find a fight going on and large group of people watching, according to Tampa Police.

They had a difficult time getting through the crowd because they were being uncooperative and refused to disperse, according to police. When the officers did reach the people who were fighting, they found several girls with ripped shirts and several hair weaves which had been pulled from the heads of some of the girls who were fighting, cops said.

Minutes later a 2nd fight had broken out, the same people gathered across the street, now armed with sticks. Once again officers had to force their way through the crowd.

One billion dollars is no longer enough. The price of admission to this, the 25th anniversary edition of the Forbes 400, is $1.3 billion, up $300 million from last year. The collective net worth of the nation’s mightiest plutocrats rose $290 billion to $1.54 trillion.

    Good morning everyone!

A minute ago, I saw the small font problem everyone has been describing for the FIRST time in Safari! The ads were spread out and each item had a carriage return to really drop and extend the ad text down.

Cleared up on the next reload except for the glorious 3D blue gradient background. Guess homey is right… it is a CSS problem (which no one can fix or wants to admit). Think happy thoughts…happy thoughts 👿

  402. koakane™ May 30, 2008 9:31 am

    morning and howzit

very busy this morning so it must be friday but have a break now

it is me or does the drawing of the new Ching athletic complex look very similar to that of Iolani school? but its way cool and about time UH gets something like that.

with all thats happening to UH athletics safe to say JD is off and running with positive results on upgrading the program.

  403. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc May 30, 2008 9:35 am

According to a UH press release, here are the ticket rates for the upcoming year at all three facilities where tickets are sold.

Aloha Stadium end zone upper level football season tickets will be reduced. Individual game tickets in the north end zone will drop to $12 from $22 for ages 4 to high school.

A season-ticket package in the upper level for men’s basketball will fall from $59 to $40 for UH students. A single game adult upper-level ticket for an individual game will drop from $22 to $18.

Student season tickets for baseball go from $75 to $50 .

Free admission to men’s volleyball matches for UH students in the Super Rooter/Manoa Maniacs sections and the upper level.

Adults who purchase at least two tickets to any game will receive two student tickets for the price of one for that game.

For many regulars on the blog whose kids are not under roof any more or the grandkids are nowhere nearby, this will not have much of an impact unless you treat kids from the neighborhood or church; however, creating additional family-friendly sports entertainment opportunities pays off in increased concession sales as well as reduces the possibility that negative fan behaviors will occur. Remember last season’s whoopdedo over fan behavior?

Hope to see some of you either today or tomorrow.

bhf2 and FloridaTed – I just got a call from the UH Ticket Office. I am on the list for 6 Florida Game Tickets @ $50. They will charge my cc in June. Not sure what section yet but they will be all together.
Duh… I forgot to ask about the Oregon Game.

She said I will soon be getting a call about the season tickets. They are still working on the existing ticket holder list.

    Ok.
    hiho

  406. bonar May 30, 2008 9:59 am

Dropping ticket prices is a great idea and the timing couldn’t have been better.

Detoxification generally can take anywhere from three to five days to be completed, depending on the frequency and quantity of the drug substances that were being abused, and the process of which the detoxification is being undergone. When detoxification is being completed under medical care, medications are usually given to the patient to alleviate the pain of the withdrawal symptoms, and aid in the avoidance of any permanent side effects resulting from the detoxification process.
