Push for press

Maybe it’s just a coinkydink, but the Mountain West and WAC are having their football media previews in the same week and in the same city.

The MWC’s meet-the-press days are July 26 and 27 at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas. The WAC will have a reception July 27 at the Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas, then a full day of interviews with coaches and players July 28.

UH officials are invited to attend the MWC media programs, although they are not on the agenda.

For the WAC event, head coach Greg McMackin, quarterback Bryant Moniz and linebacker Corey Paredes will represent the Warriors. UH, Fresno State and Nevada join the MWC on July 1, 2012.

    Just “Pluss-ing” #66 from yesterday:

    Derek’s Excellent Comments:

    “Derek: June 23rd, 2011 at 10:44 am

Is it just me, but I think JHT is looking a lot bigger and nastier. He’s going to have a monster year. Also, the following in my opinion will have big years and make a big impact:

    1) Aaron Brown, LB; this guy just makes big plays, and he plays fast and he hits hard.

    2) Darius Bright, WR; with his size, speed, and height he’s the perfect alley oop pass in the end zone for a touchdown. What’s his vertical jump? I predict he’ll have more than 10 TDs this year.

    3) Kaniela Tuipulotu, DT – he’s on a mission this year; he’s pissed off that he wasn’t named to the All WAC 1st team last year. Other teams are going to pay this year.

    4) Tank Hopkins, CB; he has something to prove after sitting out last year because of an injury. He got burned against UNLV in 2009 in Vegas and he won’t let it happen again.

    5) Paipai Falemaru, DE; this has to be the breakout year for him and get a ton of sacks; he got better in the second half of the year last year.

    6) Moniz and Paredes – Bryant and Corey will continue to excel with numbing statistics. The question is, how much and how high will they produce.

    7) Potential, potential, potential – Beau Yap, Allan Sampson.

    8) Steady Eddie – Royce Pollard, WR; he’s as reliable as they go. At least 60+ catches and over 800+ yards; breakout year could be 80+ catches and close of 1,000 yds.

    9) Joey Iosefa, RB – Touchdown Jesus; his niche might be scoring in the red zone, especially inside the 5; with his leverage and power and low center of gravity he’s the next coming of the Bowling Ball. What is he, 6’0″ or 6’1″ and 245 lbs or 250 lbs? Hard to tackle.”

    10) Newcomers’ Defensive IMPACT: Although you can’t always count on newcomers fitting in and contributing right away: the coaches (DO?) early evaluation is that “ALL the JC Recruits” (emphasized: Every One) are measuring up like Real Deals (Great Backgrounds, great work ethics and a Tendency toward and Looking Like Results Players… all need areas to wit:

    a) Bigger & Nastier2: Mike Edwards was recruited at 175 #, now up to 190/195; (brings SEC Experience to CB)

    b) DL Tavita Woodard, DE Craig Cofer & LB Brendan Daly should be making plays as soon as Game # 1 against Colorado

[CAN WRs 6-3 Cecil Doe and 6-0 Chris Gant (JC 1st Team All-American) make early impacts as well ?]

  39. Kekoa June 24, 2011 8:42 am

After witnessing the Passing of the Watermelon Bowl at yesterday’s cc…I thought we should declare the 1st game of every season the Watermelon Bowl. It would take a really wild stretch of the imagination to incorporate *Watermelon* in our tailgate recipes.

While observing the passing of the bowl, I thought it should be placed in the very capable hands of sjmacro. I think he would make a mighty fine ‘keeper’ of the Bowl. After all, it’s almost as sacred as being awarded the Nobel Peace prize…(‘cept for

    da millions of dollahs paht).

  40. gigi-hawaii June 24, 2011 8:47 am

hmmm. I am missing something here.

What’s the significance of the watermelon bowl

and who started the tradition and why?

Makes one believe that UH is getting a great student athlete and person of excellent character! May we warm to him as he is to Hawaii and UH.

I doubt that there is enough days in Spring for the Big X to catch up to that level of play!

  73. Slugger June 24, 2011 11:22 am

ST ~ I think I figured out the answer to my question about the MWC media guides…if UH paid for an ad picturing Moniz in the #12 jersey, it must have been in a paper media guide… one would think anyway.

  74. SteveM June 24, 2011 11:39 am

    Good morning everyone!

At lunch, Curveball said he plans to drive to the UH-Nevada game this year.

He asked Slugger if anyone else was going.

    Slugger looked at me.

I shrugged, “Web page is up but it’s empty so far…”

    http://home.roadrunner.com/~smurashi/tsai-kos/away11.html

So Curveball gets the first entry.

Please mention on the blog if you tentatively plan to attend any road games. This helps you identify who else is attending and what cattle call & tailgate activities are planned).

  79. Stephen Tsai June 24, 2011 1:00 pm

    Alum

Indeed, there are three kickers, with only one (Hadden) on scholarship.

All three are on the 105-player roster for training camp.

If they add another kicker, it will be a first-day deal. I’ve heard talk of kickers being interested, but don’t think there’s anything set.

    Ms Petals?

    Mr. Bean?

  83. d1shima June 24, 2011 1:33 pm

  86. LizKauai -iPad June 24, 2011 2:17 pm

gigi- The sacred watermelon platter of the Tsai-kos is a holy relic, first revelaed at Cabana C, I believe. It bore the cold, juicy, sweetness that nourished and sustained T-Gaters through the hottest days and coldest nights; that carried us through the thick and thin, sunshine and rain, that was the last two UH Football seasons.

  87. LizKauai -iPad June 24, 2011 2:18 pm

    Re: 2012 Quarterbacks

From the posts I have been seeing on various sites and hearing from Rolovich on the radio, our QB situation should be great in 2012. The only player that I haven’t heard much positive things about is Nielsen who happens to be the last one on the depth charts apparently.

  96. wafan June 24, 2011 3:22 pm

    GG . . .

Maybe if Hawai’i actually had a sufficient number of health/food inspectors . . . I know one of them. He says some restaurants are inspected once every 2-3 years. Here, restaurants are inspected once every 6 months with unannounced spot checks every few months, and, naturally, more frequent inspections if there is a complaint or concern. Results are often posted in the daily paper, too. Heck, even the taco trucks (similar to Hawai’i’s lunch wagons) are inspected on a regular basis.

There are places at home I will not frequent because I witnessed health and food handling issues.

  97. wafan June 24, 2011 3:26 pm

Nice of the MWC and bushWAC’d to have their media days so close together. If it was not planned it is a wonderful cohinkydink! I sure hope the soon to be departing and new schools will participate to their fullest.

Hows the happiest guy on earth doing? No more wake ups, huh?

  104. gigi-hawaii June 24, 2011 3:32 pm

    wafan,

I have found only 3 restaurants in Hawaii that weren’t in compliance:

Yong Sing (roach in my chow fun) — out of business

Royal Palace (roach in shrimp ala canton) — still open

    and

Henry Louie’s — toothpick in my soup — still open

  105. gigi-hawaii June 24, 2011 3:33 pm

considering how often we dine out, 3 restaurants is not bad.

  106. wafan June 24, 2011 3:50 pm

    DPK . . .

    Wonderful, now.

  107. wafan June 24, 2011 3:52 pm

    GG . . .

Restaurants could have minor and/or serious infractions and remain open. As long as they are working to be in compliance.

  108. wafan June 24, 2011 3:56 pm

Heck, that one factory that made sauces was finally closed after how many years of non-compliance? Kind of scary how lax the health department is in Hawai’i.

  109. d1shima (Aria'd) June 24, 2011 3:58 pm

Great college Bball in extra innings now. Cavaliers and Gamecocks tied at 2 in the 10th.

Wish the BaseBows had pitching like this.

  110. wafan June 24, 2011 3:58 pm

    CSB . . .

Well, I think the food is pretty good. Long way to go for a meal, though! Is Nick at the Issaquah Best Buy? How’s the Big Boss?

  111. d1shima (Aria'd) June 24, 2011 4:00 pm

One shocker a coupla years back was Sekiya closing for a few weeks to get in compliance.

  112. Ralph June 24, 2011 4:13 pm

Yani Tseng leads at -8 at the Wegmans after 2 rounds, Wie T38 at E.

  113. gigi-hawaii June 24, 2011 4:42 pm

    What’s wrong with Wie?

    Terrible!

  114. MysteryPerson June 24, 2011 4:48 pm

Nothing is really wrong with Michelle. She is just not able to be on the LPGA circuit full-time yet, like all the other girls, until she gets her Stanford degree next spring.

  115. chopsueyboy June 24, 2011 4:53 pm

    wafan

yes, still at Issaquah taking care of digital life.

    #95 Re: 2012 QBs.

    what did rolo say? hmmmm….

in 2006, when colt was a junior, the warriors rarely punted and led the nation in fewest punts. that means he marched the team up and down the field on every drive, either scoring by TD or FG….sometimes we turned it over in the redzone. i believe against oregon we didnt punt, yet lost.

but colt ran our O in that manner–up and down the field, not only racking up yards and points, but eating up the clock as well. we actually led our opponents in time of possession.

now, when someone says our qb situation will be ok in 2012, i imagine playing usc and byu–back-to-back on the road to begin the season. afa, csu, fsu and sdsu will also be formidable road trips. we play boise state at home.

now, based on the spring game and the 2010 season, i dont see anyone on the bench that mirrors rolo’s confidence that we should be ok. in other words, i dont see a qb that can march us up and down the field consistently for 4-quarters. we have been through this “we’ll be ok” scenario before with rolo in 2008 and 2009. guess what? still, i would like to remain positive. but rather than saying “we’ll be ok” i’ll say, “we shall see”.

  118. warriorsun June 24, 2011 5:01 pm

  120. el burro sabio June 24, 2011 5:46 pm

What I don’t like about 2012 is that 6 offensive linemen are seniors in 2011, which might mean 3 or 4 new starters again next season.

  121. A-House June 24, 2011 6:15 pm

    ebs:

are all 6 OL starters in 2011?

perhaps, Coach Shaw will use a few underclassmen as starters in 2011 and as primary subs for the seniors that may give UH a more experienced OL to start 2012.

i especially like Jordan L and Shawn S at the OT positions – both tall with good feet and long arms.

must agree with you that USC and BYU back to back on the road in 2012 will be a challenge.

UH coaching staff, especially offense at RB and receivers, seldom use “subs” thus denying players a chance to grow with experience – this has been my long time criticism of the staff. Defense has used many “subs” the past 2 years which will be a huge plus for 2011 and 2012 if they continue this trend.

ST: – #116 – no sweat DPK contacted me. If you carry a phone book in your car, you can look me up – first number however is a FAX number.

  124. el burro sabio June 24, 2011 6:34 pm

    Mr. A-House,

After spring, Laurel, Leonard, and Lefiti were project starters, and then there’s Austin Hansen. Faaumu and Sapolu are the other seniors on the roster. Hopefully some of the 5 redshirt freshmen will get some playing time over even take over, but yes, the subs don’t get much PT. If they did we all might be more comfortable with Laurel, Legay, and others who might be starting this year.

  125. tommui June 24, 2011 6:36 pm

#113 – I don’t know. Michelle does make $$$ which many golfers do not.

No question that she has more potential than she has shown so far. Of course one can argue that she has not shown that much because she doesn’t go full time on the circuit which would gives her more experience, more physical endurance and more mental toughness.

It’s somewhat akin to what A-House complains about – the lack of playing time for our receivers who lacks the experience and the toughness and physical endurance that more playing time would generate.

But I guess it would equate to any occupation be it doctors, lawyers, mechanics etc.

  128. warriorsun June 24, 2011 7:56 pm

    #120.

not all OL starters will be 5th year seniors in 2011.

at least one r/s frosh will start and several will be high value back-ups.

    and will play.

we have a solid corps of up and coming frosh who have great assests for 2012.

    jmo.

  129. el burro sabio June 24, 2011 8:23 pm

    #128

That’s why I said “might mean 3 or 4 new starters”, we could end up with 3 or 4 returning starters instead. I’m looking forward to seeing this group of freshmen play.

  130. Lopaka June 24, 2011 8:41 pm

    warriorsun,

welcome to college football. almost everyone in the country wishes they could have a qb that can just take over a game and carry the team. not too much teams have them. even the bigtime schools usually have guys who they just tell to not make mistakes and not lose the game. we get spoiled when we do have a great one. everyone gives timmy a hard time, but he was a good qb for us and a lot of schools would have killed to have someone like him. colt ran our offense very well. the run and shoot is very dependent on it’s qb’s so when our guys play bad it’s magnified.

i think rolo is an outstanding coach and will get a guy who will do well in the system. the next one may not be a colt or even a bryan moniz, but they’ll get a guy who’ll get the job done.

  131. Lopaka June 24, 2011 8:45 pm

    A-house,

i’ll say this. what most people don’t understand is you just can’t sub out. the r-n-s takes a lot of precision and a bunch of guys being on the same page. it’s a pro offense. when the coaches are trying to win games, they will keep they’re starters in there. now, if it’s a blowout, then the subs get playing time. but for the mostly the starts will play. this is not just in the r-n-s, but with most offenses.

  132. Lopaka June 24, 2011 8:48 pm

    * my computer is just spelling it’s own words. they’re should be their; mostly should not have “for the” in front of it; and it should say starters will play.

  133. al June 24, 2011 9:00 pm

lopaka…nice read. so true what you said and it applies to all team sports.

i see you have a “smart” computer.

  134. gigi-hawaii June 24, 2011 9:01 pm

Lopaka, I wonder why that happens. A lot of bloggers complain that their computer substitutes spellings and words for what they have typed.

Mine never does that. Is it because I use XP and not windows 7?

  136. SteveM June 24, 2011 9:42 pm

Rasu Begasu has issued his first RSVP call for the UH-UNLV game tailgate and optional bus on Facebook. He has also issued a Friday night Dinner/Faraoke Call RSVP count request on Facebook (count will determine whether to reserve the entire restaurant or not).

Since only around 50% of the known Tsai-kos are on FB, please continue to send requests and updates to me for listing/count at:

    http://home.roadrunner.com/~smurashi/tsai-kos/las2011.html

I will pick up any count and updates on John’s FB Event Invitations, but if not on FB, please send to me.

Well…QB Tom Brady came to be elected Number 1 in Leading 100 Game enthusiasts of this year at standard NFL websites. I really like his tale extremely. Late round draft collection, skinny child at the combine, in the end given a venture and having the desire of NFL prominence and a super model bride. I always show my great pride by wearing football jersey with a number 12 and his name. You will find there’s a shop from where i ordered my excellent jerseys. Jeter’s fans can get mlb jerseys, Jordan’s follower can collect discount nba jerseys and Crosby’s enthusiasts can shop for nhl jerseys wholesale there. What’s great is they supply youth nfl jerseys and women jerseys. I mailed 2 pieces as gifts to my nephew. He likes it very much. I purchased my sports team a dozen of cheap nfl jerseys at around 20 dollars, quality is much better than expectation, big surprise. Also i want to have my own name and number padded on NFL uniforms, I hope they are able to personalized jerseys soon.

A person having a main depressive episode usually exhibits a very low disposition, which pervades all aspects regarding life, and an inability to expertise pleasure inside activities which were formerly loved. Depressed individuals may be preoccupied with, or perhaps ruminate over, thoughts and feelings of worthlessness, inappropriate guilt or perhaps regret, helplessness, hopelessness, and self-hatred. Inside severe cases, depressed individuals may have signs of psychosis. These symptoms include delusions or, less generally, hallucinations, usually distressing.Other symptoms of depressive disorders include inadequate concentration as well as memory (particularly in those with melancholic or even psychotic features).
