Prose and cons

Russ Lande of The Sporting News did a complete mock draft of all seven rounds. He predicts two former Warriors will be selected in the sixth round — running back Alex Green by the Oakland Raiders, and receiver Greg Salas by the New York Giants with a compensatory pick.

Lande has Green as the 12th running back selected; Salas is the 25th receiver.

Here’s the link: Sporting News mock draft.

But there is hope. Our friends at draftdaddy.com report that about 650 undrafted free agents were invited to organized team activities (OTAs) last year.

Happy birthday to the legendary Gary Allen.

Also birthday wishes to basketball standout Grant Kono. Long live the May Day king.

For the draft experts, I’m curious as to how accurate Russ Lande is perceived to be.

Meant to say how about that!

  8. Stephen Tsai April 23, 2011 7:30 am

Because of the different dynamics of how one pick can affect an entire draft, most draft analyst rate success on picking the correct round for a player, not the specific team.

Thoughts & prayers go out to Gigi…I hope you recover well from this illness.

    Good morning folks!

Really sad to hear about Gigi. Positive thoughts and prayers on her prognosis and a speedy recovery.

I could have sworn I read Fox Sports predicted Salas going in the third round. In any case, its not what round you are drafted, but which team selects you. Good luck to Salas and Green and the rest of the Warrior ohana thats hoping for a career at the next level.

Anyway, have a great weekend everybody!

  18. Derek April 23, 2011 7:53 am

I would never go by what the Sporting News say. They don’t treat the Hawaii football program with any respect and because of that I cancelled my subscription with them about 3 or 4 years ago. I well never read The Sporting News again. What do they know about mock drafts? For that matter who cares about mock drafts after the first 2 rounds. It’s a total crap shoot. Salas and Green will go when they go! They will have an opportunity somewhere. It doesn’t appear they will go in the first 2 rounds. After that, they could go from the 3rd round and on down. But, sometimes, there are some surprises. Like last year when the Jacksonville Jaguas picked Tyson Alualu in the first round when he was projected to be a 2nd rounder. He actually had a very good season in his rookie year and started most of the games. He validated his first round pick for sure. But, I have to say that I enjoy watching the NFL draft with much interest. I hope my Niners do well. They need a pass rusher, a cornerback, and line help, and they could use a very good slot receiver. I trust Jim Harbaugh in his talent evaluation. I don’t know if he will use one of the picks on a QB. I wouldn’t be surprised if they trade down or trade the pick for a draft choice next year. I think Harbaugh wants Andrew Luck next year.

  21. Michigan Warrior April 23, 2011 8:08 am

    Mahalo, Slugger!

Every time I go over these mock drafts… ever notice how the majority of the projected top draftees ONLY come from BCS conference schools? I mean, they even have Ivy League school kids going before those from established mid-majors such as Boise State.

Part of it, I think, is the amount of noise generated on behalf of players from those schools. Talking heads from big media almost solely drives interest. The rest just jump on the bandwagon and repeat what they read or heard, without doing any thorough research themselves.

    Bah, experts!

Weren’t we supposed to finish 7th in conference last year?

As the title implies, much of the “prose” written in advance of the draft can be categorized as a “con”.

I wonder what the difference in $$$ is from 3rd to 6th round these days? Can’t be anything like dropping from 1st to 2nd round! 😯

  26. Derek April 23, 2011 8:36 am

You could say the Wahine softball team is disappointing. After high expectations this team has not jelled like last year. Reason(s)? Good question(s). But, they are not hitting the ball like they were last year and they are not hitting in the clutch. People tried to call them the Sistas of Swat because of last year’s home run records. Not so fast. They are more like the Sistas of Strikeouts. It doesn’t look good with each loss. They will be lucky to win the WAC tournament. The regular season title is almost hopeless. Chances of making to a regional this year as an at large pick is slim, an slim left a long time ago. Bob Coolen must be very disappointed as well. I think the team has not hit as well as he thought they would, maybe not as good as last year, but at least pretty good. Majam, Iwata, Aguirre, Gonzales, and Rodriguez have not come even close to last years pace. All of them has had an off year. But, maybe last year was just too unbelievable and this year is down to earth. The overall pitching has been as expected which is pretty good. Not elite, but good enough to win. If the Wahine scores at least 3 or 4 runs per game, they win almost every time. Problem is the Wahine oftentimes get shutout or even 1 run. Check the scores. Isn’t it asking too much for the Wahine to hit one 3-run homer during the game. That all it takes most of the time. One big home run w/ some runners on. As former Baltimore Orioles manager Weaver said a lone time ago, the most exciting play in baseball is the 3 run home run.

When I was a kid, I read the Sporting News because of the baseball coverage. And then ESPN and the Internet happened, and well, no need to read the publication anymore.

But it was disturbing when it listed Honolulu as the worst sports city in American a few years ago. I dunno. Does Moscow, Idaho, have the Pro Bowl?

  29. cavewarrior April 23, 2011 9:08 am

Sporting News….as in ‘you take your chances’.

  30. Dan-O April 23, 2011 9:09 am

The thing with league postseason tournaments is there’s always a chance.

Charlie Wade noted that if volleyball were run like college football, a season-opening loss could end a team’s hopes for a national title. With postseason tournaments, it gives teams a chance to build during the regular season. Does this minimize the regular season? Maybe. So go cry with the Ohio State basketball team. But the non-football format gives the UH softball team some hope for an NCAA Regional berth despite troubles during the regular season.

  37. Stephen Tsai April 23, 2011 10:07 am

As for internal squabbles, it’s all part of sports. Usually the alleged grumbling comes from players who don’t play, or worse, from parents of players who don’t play.

But I wouldn’t worry about the softball team. It’s a young group, and the players will get better. That’s also part of sports.

  38. Stephen Tsai April 23, 2011 10:11 am

I think people forget that fast-pitch softball is a difficult sport to play. I remember when soccer scores were the norm for softball. Tyleen Tausaga made hitting look easy. It’s not.

  40. Stephen Tsai April 23, 2011 10:25 am

    Old School Dave:

    Thanks for that link.

SMU has a nice stadium, but the billionaires watch the game from luxury boxes that are soundproof with tinted windows. The high-rollers can see the players, but the people on the field can’t hear or see them.

Rice’s stadium once hosted a Super Bowl. It’s way too big for a small private school. Although the press box is cool. Each reporter has about four seats.

Utah State has a great backdrop. Trouble is, there are no concourses. So when it rains, there’s no place to go, and it rained — hard — at that last UH game.

  41. Old School Dave April 23, 2011 10:46 am

Stephen: I was expecting the Kibbie Dome at Idaho to be #1, but was surprised to not find it on the list. Surprised to find the Rose Bowl (UCLA) and LA Col (USC) on that list. I heard that they’re planning to renovate, if not started already, WAZZU’s stadium.

I wonder if June Jones made the claim that there was no tradition at SMU prior to his arrival?

Sorry, had to get that in.

From those calling for breakout seasons for some to mocking a moniker given to them by the media…

The dynamic of the sports “fanatic” is fun to read.

Always evolving and always changing to match some people’s attention span.

  46. Garret April 23, 2011 11:19 am

But there is hope. Our friends at draftdaddy.com report that about 650 undrafted free agents were invited to organized team activities (OTAs) last year.

If the labor dispute continues, there will not be any OTAs. That means that undrafted free agents won’t get any shot to impress NFL teams and earn a spot.

Free agents not available to be drafted cannot even work out during college Pro Days or have tryouts in front of NFL scouts. The only loophole is if a team has a players eligible to be drafted and free agents are “coincidentally” there…kind of like when NFL scouts wanted to look at SMU WR Al Robinson and Colt and RGM got to participate in the tryout. The excuse was that Colt was needed to throw the ball to Robinson…but RGM’s workout for the Eagles scout was kind of bending the rules against free agents working out for scouts.

  47. Derek April 23, 2011 11:33 am

Happy Birthday to you, Gary Allen, my all time UH favorite running back and all time rushing leader. He was also a very good punt returner. Can you say “muddle huddle”. He ran that to perfection, everytime he ran it was for big yardage.

  48. Derek April 23, 2011 12:01 pm

Looking at the reports it seems it looks like Odunsi and Blackwell are out. Read that Blackwell is going to or has signed with Loyola Marymount and Odunsi crossed out Hawaii and is now considering Butler, Colo. St., and Penn St. Maybe Darnell Taylor is still in the picture. No sure about the Serbian PG.

  49. al April 23, 2011 12:25 pm

yes…derek. cj committed a day or two ago to lmu after visiting hawaii. odunsi unofficially stated that he would trip penn state instead of hawaii.

although the latter report could have stemmed from mutual lack of interest.

taylor just got positive sat scores, however, not sure if he would still qualify at manoa with its tough academic standards for entrance.

stay tuned…with at least one more scholie left if “along came jones” or “namar” we couldl find ourselves with another recruit. you never know which “jones” may land in your lap.

  53. warriorsun April 23, 2011 1:02 pm

as far as wahine softball is concerned, there are concerns and it is not player related and is certainly not our pitching. our pitching has actually improved. kudos to coolen, paranaby and stephanie. in fact coach bob did an excellent job of bringing kaia around with a tender preseason elbow suffered from too much post-season use.

some believe, the problem is in instruction. say what you must but the fall-off has been too significantly steep and far reaching to pin it on bats, slumps, batting order or opponent pitching. the game is not perfect and the challenge remains as ever constant to recognize, acknowledge, breakdown, adjust, insert application and monitor correction….it aint going to change until that happens.

  54. warriorsun April 23, 2011 1:12 pm

fresnecks (8-3) split a DH w sac st today and remain 1/2 game behind but now have 3 losses in the right column.

nev (4-3) won their series against a red-hot nms (5-6) team and san jose (6-6) ditto against lat (4-8).

imp to watch the losses for each team, esp since fres (8-3) had one game w nev cancelled.

  55. Warrior Dave April 23, 2011 1:13 pm

  56. al April 23, 2011 1:29 pm

650…i haven’t heard of him wanting out. but, yah that would be great if it were true.

  57. al April 23, 2011 1:43 pm

softball…okay so last year’s college world series team was special. not only did we have talent one through nine but we had heart and soul in the form of those graduated seniors.

although this year’s team has many of the postions returning we haven’t measured up to last year’s team.

it’s plain and simple like vanilla ice cream.

we haven’t reloaded to the caliber of last year’s special group. until we become a national perennial powerhouse we need to appreciate the winning records and occasional conference championships.

until the top local girls stay home it’ll be tough to recruit the creme de la creme to play softball in hawaii on a consistent and regular basis.

moving to the big west will help recruiting the cali shores but competition will also move up a notch.

can’t hang anything on the coaches’ ability to teach and improve the talents of this year’s or next year’s teams until there is potential on the roster to do such.

personally, i think coolen had done as well as can be recruiting. i like that he continues to tap the aussie marketplace and he has good contacts in socal.

we all loved les murakami back in the day. he too had uphill battles. his best teams had the best local talents. the stadium was filled and yet we only had one trip to the big show, cws,

trap has done a credible job, especially in the last few years. he gets it, he works the local talents. if we can just get the local kids with d1 talents to stay home and represent we’d have better success in softball, mvb, baseball, wbb, football, and even wvb. these are the sports that the local kids can and do excel at. we need them to stay home and represent.

    ,,,nuff said!

  59. Derek April 23, 2011 2:08 pm

I have just seen the most inspirational and most amazing perfomance by Brandon Roy of the Portland Trailblazers. Blazers were down by the Dallas Mavericks by 23 points, 18 at the beginning of the 4th quarter. Roy was just fantastic willing his team to victory, making unbelievable shots, including a 4 pt. play when he was fouled on a 3 pointer, dishing for assists, and handling the ball just about every play down the court in the 4th quarter. With all that he has gone thru in his career with all the knee surguries and wondering if he would play pro basketball again much less at the level he has played in the past, this story made me cry when the game ended. He, IS, the franchise of the Trailblazers no question. He was NBA rookie of the year the 5th pick in the draft out of Washington and he’s been a NBA all star. What a performance!!!!! It is great to see him play outstanding basketball again.

Now, if only Greg Oden can stay healthy the Blazers might be more dangerous in the future.

LaMarcus Aldridge is already an NBA All-Star caliber player. He’s great. Gerald Wallace is a former NBA All-Star. Wesley Matthews is underrated. Nicholas Batum and Andrew Miller are solid. Marcus Camby has lots of experience and is steady. Rudy Fernandez is a streak shooter from 3 pt range. And, I think Nate McMillan is one of the best in the coaching business. Things are looking up for the Trailblazers!

    you got 2 be kidding?

    I cant let this slip.

majam, jess, jenna, alex and gonzo are not potential players?

right there u have 2-softball college all-americans and 5-all wac players.

they are the players that are under performing.

sharla has done well and robinson close to the 5.

look, if we have the potential in the future that we have currently on this team and we do badly, it doesnt matter who we recruit.

  61. warriorsun April 23, 2011 3:38 pm

there’s only one way any team gets national respect from NATIONAL mags n pundits–u win the big games–ask Boise, Utah and TCU. warrior cane sugar is for local consumption.

  62. WahineSoftballFan April 23, 2011 4:02 pm

    Warriorsun,

What people like al, kazz, and pomai, need to understand, before the season ever started, the NCAA made a mandated change in the kind of bat that was going to be used. The bat now being used compares closely to a wooden bat, similar to what the basebows are using. This type of bat does not produce alot of homeruns. Because of that, the batter needs to be more of a line drive, alley type of hitter, not a bomber, cause all that will produce is a long fly out.

Coolen, as stubborn as he is, plays for the homerun offensively, and has his batters swing for it. Very big mistake Coolen. Need to learn, with these bats, your batters need to be alley hitters. Even the LTU head baseball coach has said that he needs to recruit hitters, not sluggers anymore.

Until Coolen decides to change his hitting philosophy, the softbows are going to be playing behind the eightball. He needs to realize the game has changed from a slugging, to hitters game. Inotherwards, it is now small ball time. In conclusion, this season is on Coolen, and nobody else.

Sorry but I have to disagree. If you watched last years playoff run you would have noticed the other teams were loaded with girls who had gazelle like speed. Our girls are built like home run hitters. Coolen would of course like to get those tall lanky type players, but so would McMackin or Shoji for that matter. Our distance from the mainland and academic mandates means our coaches are faced with huge recruiting challenges. That is not going to change. If you have a coach in mind who would do better than our present coaches please feel free to mention them.

You’re incorrect about a different bat. Bats change every year. But older bats produce faster exit speeds, and there’s a limit on that. If the yellow bats were not used the past year, they probably would be OK this year.

You are wrong about the bats. The NCAA, went with a slower exit speed off the bat, just like they did with the baseball bats. The NCAA wanted the bats in both softball, and baseball to react just like a wooden bat. Check it out.

  79. Stephen Tsai April 23, 2011 5:26 pm

Nope, you’re wrong. The exit speeds have been in place for a few years.

But you are correct the bats have nothing to do with the hitting.

  80. The psycho returns April 23, 2011 5:30 pm

Yikes, the psycho returns …. time to leave

  81. Stephen Tsai April 23, 2011 5:32 pm

Somebody does clear out a room.

  82. Stephen Tsai April 23, 2011 5:34 pm

So, are we all set for the party with the Pink Side tonight?

  83. WahineSoftballFan April 23, 2011 5:34 pm

    ST,

This time you are wrong, please check it out, the NCAA changed it before the start of the year. Why do you think the umpires of have a sheet with the serial numbers of the bats that can only be used in the game. This is the first year, the umpires had to do that, due to the drastic change in the bats exit speed. If you do not believe me, call the NCAA.

  84. al April 23, 2011 5:35 pm

besr has been around a long time. they may have changed the ratio which can effect the length of the hit, however, you still got to hit it on the nose.

without some of the graduated players from last year, we are lacking some consistent hitting which changes the way the good hitters are pitched to. more importantly we had leaders in the lineup and our defense was also a lot better. many factors come in to play in this game.

a lot of the psychological phase of the game is written in the stats.

and hey, say what you like. it don’t bother me, because i’ll say what i like and believe. i’ve been involved in this game too long to have somebody tell me something other than what i have experienced first hand.

  85. WahineSoftballFan April 23, 2011 5:36 pm

The only time a bat has something to do with hitting is if you are trying to hit homeruns, cause all you will be doing is hitting deep fly ball outs.

  86. Bowwar April 23, 2011 5:36 pm

Yup, there goes the neighborhood again…

  87. al April 23, 2011 5:38 pm

a lot of the psychological phase of the game is NOT written in the stats.

    sorry.

  88. WahineSoftballFan April 23, 2011 5:39 pm

    Al,

I guess you must be smarting then Coach Trepasso, or the LTU Head Baseball Coach, and all the other College Baseball Coaches, cause they all say the same thing. The bats have changed the way the game is played now.

  89. Stephen Tsai April 23, 2011 5:43 pm

Just called my NCAA person and they said that’s not true.

I’ll call my other one on Monday to double check.

  90. iwonderwhytheyhateme April 23, 2011 5:43 pm

If Coolen doesn’t make his players practice hitting using wooden mixing spoons, he’s an idiot.

  91. WahineSoftballFan April 23, 2011 5:46 pm

Meet me at the Softball game next week, I will prove it to you. Then you will owe me lunch, and a big apology, right here on your blog.

And even though I’m right, I’ll still buy you lunch. I’ll see you at the game.

  95. Stephen Tsai April 23, 2011 5:51 pm

    I wonder why …:

As I understand it, the bet is there’s a new rule that eliminates UH’s yellow bats.

I say it’s an old rule that eliminated the bats. (By aging and becoming springier, the bats exceeded the exit-speed limit.)

  96. Michigan Warrior April 23, 2011 5:52 pm

    Howzit Tasi-ko Nation!

It’s been a disappointing day for UH sports fans so far. Hope the ‘Bows can bring Valpo down to earth, and the Wahine can do the same to BSU.

About the bats, I see it as something of a non-issue. Sure, the Wahine made their reputation as sluggers last year. But their problem isn’t that they’re hitting fly balls instead of homers. The problem is they’re striking out instead of hitting the ball. And since it seems to be common to all the hitters, it falls on the coach to figure out what they’re doing wrong and fix it. I’ve got the game on K5 right now, and it seems the hitters are not watching the ball all the way to the bat — they’re looking toward the field as the ball eludes the bat. Hitting a ball, whether it’s with a bat or a club or a racquet, involves hand-eye coordination, and you can’t have that coordination when the eye is not on the ball.

    ST,

Here you go, read this from the NCAA.

Protocol for mandatory bat testing approved in softball

    By Greg Johnson

    NCAA.org

The Playing Rules Oversight Panel during its conference call Monday approved the protocol for mandatory regular-season softball bat compliance testing that goes into effect in the spring of 2011.

This marks the first time the tests, which will be conducted at yet-to-be-determined regular-season tournaments in all three divisions, are mandatory. Postseason bat testing, including post-competition testing, remains in place.

Wherever mandatory NCAA bat compliance testing takes place, all teams must have their bats tested before competing in the tournament.

A portable barrel compression machine will be used to conduct the test. The machines are about the size of a radar gun. Bats that pass the test, which can be conducted in a matter of seconds, will have a dated sticker placed on it so umpires know the bat has been tested.

If it is discovered during play that a player is using a bat without the appropriate sticker while in the batter’s box or after she’s completed her at-bat before the first pitch is thrown to the next batter, the batter will be declared out and will be ejected from the game. The bat will be surrendered to the umpire and returned to the team after the game. The umpire will fill out an incident report and send it to NCAA Softball Secretary-Rules Editor Dee Abrahamson.

“We have nine portable barrel compression machines, and we’re in the process of purchasing more so we can go to more places,” said Abrahamson, who is also the senior associate athletics director at Northern Illinois. “We can only go so many places, because we do have to manage a budget.”

The NCAA Softball Rules Committee is also in the process of putting together an approved softball bat list that will go into effect January 1, 2011. The bat models are the ones manufacturers are confident will be in compliance with an exit speed of less than 98 mph.

The committee asked that manufacturers provide 2004 American Softball Association certified bat models to be placed on the list. The list will be amended as the result of lab compliance testing or at the manufacturer’s request. The NCAA 2011 Approved Softball Bat List replaces and supersedes the ASA non-approved softball bat list.

  140. WahineSoftballFan April 23, 2011 8:04 pm

    ST,

If it was not for the exit speed of less then 98 mph, the wahine’s could have used the same bats as last year.

  141. jm2375 April 23, 2011 8:17 pm

    Howzit!!

Sad end to mvb season, but congrats to Charlie Wade and the entire team on a great season. They brought the fun back to Warrior volleyball. We’ll miss the seniors, and the Screechers and I are looking forward to next season.

We’ve already started preparing for next season. Rainbowtique *finally* has megaphones (aka cheer phones) in stock. Spent around $80 today including some UA shirts.

To the UHAD – is there any way the booster club discount cards can have a later expiration date for the spring sports?

  142. Stephen Tsai April 23, 2011 8:34 pm

The exit speed limit didn’t change, the enforcement of the rule changed. Bats that broke the rule in the past weren’t widely tested. That’s why I said it’s the same rule.

  143. LizKauai -iPad April 23, 2011 8:42 pm

Hiya! Just had one of the coolest days and evenings of my life.

Grandson’s first birthday party was an all-day affair and filled with the Fs. Even football!

Sorry to hear of the losses but to me it’s all about the wonderful people and not about the latest win or loss in the game of life.

Love and unity, love and unity makes the world a better place to live in.

  144. WahineSoftballFan April 23, 2011 8:48 pm

    ST,

If the same rule, then why did the Coolen have to change bats. He would have stayed with the same bats as last year. Why he did not, cause of the bat rule change.

  145. WahineSoftballFan April 23, 2011 8:48 pm

    ST,

You even stated, the older the bat, the better it performed.

  146. Stephen Tsai April 23, 2011 8:51 pm

    Liz:

    I’ll post your pic tomorrow.

  147. LizKauai -iPad April 23, 2011 8:57 pm

    🙂

  148. Stephen Tsai April 23, 2011 8:58 pm

The rule is the same as last year but not all of the bats were not tested last year. The speed limit is the same. If the yellow bats were shown to have exceeded the limit last year, they would have been disqualified.

  149. Stephen Tsai April 23, 2011 8:59 pm

The rule didn’t change. It’s just being enforced now.

  150. WahineSoftballFan April 23, 2011 9:03 pm

This is embarrassing, being swept at home. The Wahine’s could be the most disappointing team in the NCAA this year. Instead of getting better, they seem to be getting worse. Now they go from the frying pan, into the fire, next week. Starting to wonder how many of those fans will be there next year. Boise St. fans knew what was going to happen, they brought brooms with them. That really should be humiliating for the Softbows.

  151. WahineSoftballFan April 23, 2011 9:05 pm

    ST,

Are you then saying that the Coolen and the Softbows cheated last year with their bats??? And their home run record should not have been counted?

  152. el guapo April 23, 2011 9:06 pm

    ST,

Are there some invited walk-ons coming in for training camp or is Mack cutting less than 30 players? If he cuts 30, it seems like there are a few openings available.

  153. el guapo April 23, 2011 9:08 pm

I mean new invited walk-ons who were not here for spring practice

  154. Koa-mahu April 23, 2011 9:11 pm

    Hi WSF!

…i’d like to see ur ‘bat speed’. mmmmm

  155. WarriorMojo April 23, 2011 9:17 pm

Just so we’re all clear on this:

In #62 WSF said, “…before the season ever started, the NCAA made a mandated change in the kind of bat that was going to be used.”

In #95 ST said, “…the bet is there’s a new rule that eliminates UH’s yellow bats. I say it’s an old rule that eliminated the bats. (By aging and becoming springier, the bats exceeded the exit-speed limit.)”

In #139 WSF said, “Protocol for mandatory bat testing approved in softball.”

To which I say: WSF, I hope that article isn’t the best evidence in support of your position that you have. Because it it is, ST’s going to be saving some lunch money next week.

Here’s a clue:, there is a difference between the existence of a rule and the enforcement of that rule. If a rule is based upon a specific indicator, then a protocol is often necessary to ensure uniform enforcement.

The article you cited just says that the NCAA has agreed to a method (“protocol”) to measure exit speed of bats in the regular season. The article says NOTHING about a new rule. ST suggests that the rule has been in place for few years.

WSF, if you have anything else in support of your position, please post it. If not, please apologize to ST and the entire blog.

ST, I bet you lunch he doesn’t show next week.

  156. Stephen Tsai April 23, 2011 9:18 pm

I’m saying the 98 mph rule has been in place for a few years. I do not know if the bats were tested in the past. If theyh were. They were not disqualified. The rule did not cha.nge.

  157. Stephen Tsai April 23, 2011 9:25 pm

OK in a movie now. Discuss this later.

  158. LizKauai -iPad April 23, 2011 9:27 pm

  159. RedZone April 23, 2011 9:37 pm

New bat standards coming in January

    Aug 6, 2010 8:44:20 AM

    By Greg Johnson

    The NCAA News

NCAA institutions sponsoring softball will be subject to new bat standards this coming season. The new “Ball-Bat Coefficient of Restitution” standard becomes effective January 1, 2011, and there is no opportunity for “grandfathering” old bats.

The new BBCOR formula provides a better measure of a bat’s performance and allows the NCAA Softball Rules Committee and bat-testing laboratories to better predict field performance based on lab tests. The goal is for non-wood bats that meet this new standard to perform similarly to wood bats.

The BBCOR standard, which was announced in September 2008, replaces the Ball Exit Speed Ratio standard.

    The change was made because:

•For a given bat length, batted-ball speed is a near-perfect correlation with BBCOR so that a bat’s BBCOR can be used to predict the speed with which the ball will leave the bat.

•Wood and non-wood bats of similar size and with the same BBCOR produce essentially the same batted-ball speeds, so it is easy to relate a non-wood bat’s performance to that of a wood bat.

•Because the BBCOR of a bat does not depend on its length, there is no need for a sliding BBCOR scale.

•A BBCOR standard would not be a burden on manufacturers because coefficient of restitution is a fundamental concept in the physics of bat design, and BBCOR can be adjusted independent of other bat characteristics, such as length, weight, and moment of inertia.

•NCAA Division I softball statistics indicate increasing offensive performance, particularly in home runs and runs scored, and the rules committee believes this is due in large part to the kind of bats in use today.

In 2007, the per-game average of home runs hit was 0.68. That number increased to .84 in 2008 and .96 in 2009. The per-game average of home runs hit was .94 this spring.

All BBCOR bats will incorporate a logo (shown below) once certification approval is granted. This mark will be consistent across every approved bat design so umpires will easily identify approved bats.

Most manufacturers have indicated plans to have bats available for the fall season.

  162. WahineSoftballFan April 23, 2011 9:48 pm

    Redzone,

#159, That is true, also. What do you think is the problem? There offensive problems are starting to effect the pitching and defense, now.

  163. Slugger April 23, 2011 10:01 pm

    LizKauai,

You had an outstanding day! Grandson is a cutie, as is Lilu. Glad you could get together with family, friends & football contacts. 🙂

Got to chat with Kaia’s Mom & sister today. Looking forward to having Lauren on the team.

    GO WAHINE!!!

  164. Pomai April 23, 2011 10:26 pm

Bad day for UH sports, but that’s ok we’ll get’um next game.

  165. LizKauai -iPad April 23, 2011 10:27 pm

    Go Wahine!

    Good luck FootBows!!!

    Bwahahaha!

  166. gmahoney April 23, 2011 10:44 pm

Slugger, good fun hanging out and cheering with you at the Wahine game.

  167. Ralph April 23, 2011 11:12 pm

Bat speed exit speed has not changed period. All of UH bats were tested for compression last season per Coolen, and all bats passed. Who tested the bats, the NCAA. The bats were tested at Alabama and Stanford regional.

This season, UCLA and UH were two of the schools directed not to use bats more than three years after date of introduction. The bats used by the two schools last season were on the NCAA approved list. The yellow bats were added to UH inventory about 5 years ago. UCLA bats were about 4 years old. Only this year are they enforcing a 3 year moratorium on bat age.

Every year the schools use bats that are on the NCAA approved lists, based on length, weight, length to weight, composition and compression. Only the enforcement of compression is being done this season in tournament play, regional and world series. Why, lack of equipment and staff to test compression prior to this season.

  168. Ralph April 23, 2011 11:15 pm

Umpires in the past inspected each dugouts bats but they never measured compression.

  169. Ralph April 23, 2011 11:19 pm

ST prior to the game, Coolen and all of his staff are with the players in the batting cage next to the pond. Easy for you to arrange a meeting with WSF, Coolen and yourself. WSF already acknowledged in past postings that he has met and spoken with Coolen and offered his advice on hitting which he claims Coolen did not listen to. So it won’t be like strangers meeting for the first time.

  170. al April 23, 2011 11:28 pm

hey…may i invite myself to this lunch. i’ll pay for my own lunch.

  171. al April 23, 2011 11:29 pm

    we should invite coolen, too.

  172. Ralph April 23, 2011 11:34 pm

“•For a given bat length, batted-ball speed is a near-perfect correlation with BBCOR so that a bat’s BBCOR can be used to predict the speed with which the ball will leave the bat.”

Same thing as exit speed we went by in the past, but the term had to be changed because the tool used measured compression, and it had to be correlated to what people understood as exit speed. They set a standard compression number that extrapolated to an exit speed of 98.

Measure the compression of every bat at the same spot from the tip of the bat, x compression equals x exit speed, under 98 pass, over 98 fail. Simple test. Manufacturers meet these standards, the NCAA will test for compliance and check if anyone altered the bats after distribution by the manufacturer.

    The NCAA News

NCAA institutions sponsoring baseball will be subject to new bat standards this coming season. The new “Ball-Bat Coefficient of Restitution” standard becomes effective January 1, 2011, and there is no opportunity for “grandfathering” old bats.

good investigative reporting Mr. Tsai. Thank you.

  181. Ralph April 24, 2011 1:13 am

shame on you WSF! editing an article to justify your rant, and all it is is a rant. We welcome free speech, but don’t pass misinformation as truth to knock UH sports.

The Na Wahine are struggling, we can see it, we feel it too, but we keep supporting them and the season isn’t over. We have two more series in the WAC to play, then we go to the WAC tournament in Fresno. After the WAC completes its season, like everyone else and that includes the teams, we wait to see how the selection process unfolds. Easier if we won the tournament, but we got to wait because it is down the line and we are playing a game at a time.

Could someone with little experience do it, and add updates without messing it up? Anyways, good information on here, very informative.

Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Recently I’ve found an interesting site Photoshopped Image Killer that can detect fake images. Most image analysis software will be created to recognise shapes and objects. But this software is something which can trace manipulations. It’s not much more complex than recognising objects, but almost no one is interested in this kind of software except of course to detect if an image is real or fake…

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
