Pro Day: Mouton impressive despite injury

Ryan Mouton put on an impressive display before aggravating a hamstring injury while running the 40-yard dash.
Mouton felt tightness in his left hamstring at the 20-yard mark, and he limped the final 10 yards. “I tweaked it,” he said. Still, he finished in 4.42 seconds.
Earlier, Mouton wowed the scouts with a broad jump of 11 feet — a food longer than second-place finisher Erik Robinson’s 10-foot jump.
Josh Leonard also was impressive, bench pressing 225 pounds 41 times. He also ran the pro-agility test in 4.35 seconds.

David Veikune was officially timed at 4.81 seconds and 4.82 seconds in the 40-yard dash. He expressed disappointment in not breaking the 4.8-second barrier. But he was impressive in linebacker drills.

good luck to the Pro Day guys!

  2. Garret April 2, 2009 5:40 am

I hope that the Warriors have great performances at Pro Day! No hamstring injuries!

  3. Stephen Tsai April 2, 2009 5:40 am

Ryan Mouton and David Veikune have just arrived.

  4. Garret April 2, 2009 5:42 am

Interesting study of the AD salaries at D-IA schools. The average WAC AD makes $240k, which means that JD is at or below the average while HF was above the average. Big 12, Big 10, and SEC ADs make the most on average.

There are now 10 athletic directors who are paid more than $500,000 a year. Florida’s Jeremy Foley leads the pack with a salary of nearly $1 million. Kansas’ Lew Perkins pulls down $900,000 and Wisconsin’s Barry Alvarez is paid $750,000.

One surprising find was the salary of Nebraska’s Tom Osborne. The former Cornhusker coach makes $261,000, which is third-lowest among athletic directors at BCS schools. Only the salaries of Mississippi State’s Greg Byrne ($175,000) and West Virginia’s Ed Pastilong ($240,750) were lower.

Outgoing Oregon athletic director Pat Kilkenny donates all but
$25,884 of his salary back to the school, according to Bloomberg.

  5. Pauoa Boy April 2, 2009 5:44 am

    ST,

So a good time to stop by would be after 11 or is it pointless to even come down?

  6. Loa April 2, 2009 5:44 am

i hope E-Rob gets a shot at the next level
i noticed how focused he is during practices last season
he always took a knee alone in the sun attentively awaiting his turn to enter the 7v7’s

  7. Garret April 2, 2009 5:45 am

I hope the Mouton is healthy and improves his 40 time, that Veikune improves on his already good Combine numbers, that Ingram has gained some weight, and that the Warriors who didn’t get a chance to show their stuff at the combine (Sol, Adam, etc.) show the NFL scouts what they missed out on at the combine.

  8. Annoddah Dave April 2, 2009 5:49 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

Here is hoping the Pro Day results in some pro contracts for these Warriors!

    Go Warriors!

  12. Ronnie April 2, 2009 6:09 am

    Pauoa Boy,

Are you going to have any time off in a couple of weeks. Since it’s spring break for my boys (4/13 – 4/17), I may be working from home a couple of days. We can have a Calf Call for you before you head to the big sandbox.

  13. Pauoa Boy April 2, 2009 6:14 am

    Aunty Ronnie,

Yeah I can make arrangements during that time…maybe the 16th or 17th of that week. We not doing much anyway except waiting for the day to come so yeah shouldn’t be a problem.

  14. Stephen Tsai April 2, 2009 6:18 am

    PB:
I think the field work is OK to attend because it’s pretty much out in the open.
But the NFL is keeping the public away from the 40s and weightlifting.

  20. Stephen Tsai April 2, 2009 6:27 am

Rich Miano told the scouts that everyone is healthy.
He told them about Mouton pulling up at the combine, but that Mouton will be able to run today.

  21. Stephen Tsai April 2, 2009 6:36 am

Miano told the scouts that Veikune has the “best motor” for a UH player in years.

  22. Stephen Tsai April 2, 2009 6:37 am

By the way, the J-E-T-S scout said he doesn’t think his team can afford Jay Cutler.

These seniors were 10 years old back then. Speaks volumes as to the distance this program has come and the commitment everyone has made over the years.

  47. Garret April 2, 2009 8:13 am

One important note about the schedule…ESPN wanted UH to play BSU on a nationally televised Friday game late in the season (possibly setting up a game for the championship like in 2007). However, BSU refused and UH lost that ESPN home game. Maybe BSU remembered how UH beat them in 2007…now, BSU gets 3 extra days to prepare for UH.

The games at Tulsa (Oct. 14) and Hawaii (Oct. 24) are back to back, but with a half bye in between.

ESPN wanted to put the Hawaii game on a Friday later in the season but the WAC would not force the Broncos to play there on a short week again. The teams played on a Friday in 2007.

  48. Garret April 2, 2009 8:15 am

ESPN can pick 6 more WAC games to televise…here, Karl Benson praises BSU’s TV appeal. I have to restrain myself from commenting about that.

The six appearances are the most ever scheduled for the Broncos. Through late-season additions and bowl games, they have appeared seven times twice.

ESPN still can choose six WAC games for ESPNU, of which one could be a Broncos game. The dates for those games won’t change.

“It’s obvious that Boise State is important to ESPN,” WAC commissioner Karl Benson said. “And ESPN certainly has been very, very good for Boise State.”

  49. Garret April 2, 2009 8:16 am

Fresno State has a *really* difficult start to their WAC schedule, BSU and then UH back-to-back!

Fresno State opens WAC play against Boise State and at Hawaii, the two conference teams the Bulldogs have struggled with the most.

  50. jm2375 April 2, 2009 8:17 am

Garret – BSU chickens!!! If dey tink dey so good and deserve to be in a “better” conference, den dey shouldn’t be sked to play UH at our hale on a short week. cluck cluck. 🙄

  51. Garret April 2, 2009 8:17 am

BSU gets 3 extra days to prepare for UH. Fresno State gets a bye week to prepare for UH.

he Bulldogs have a week off between game four at Cincinnati and the Hawaii game, and another break before the season finale at Illinois.

  52. Garret April 2, 2009 8:18 am

Looks like the WAC decided that BSU and Nevada would be playing for the WAC title this year.

There has been speculation since the end of the 2008 football season that the Western Athletic Conference might schedule Nevada and Boise State to play in the final week of conference play this season — a move that could be interpreted as promoting perhaps the conference’s two best teams.

And that is exactly when the teams will meet, Nov. 27, the Friday after Thanksgiving, in an ESPN2-televised game.

“I don’t think in the past ESPN or the WAC has tried to predict the showcase game,” WAC commissioner Karl Benson said. “(In 2007), when it came down to Boise State and Hawaii, that escalated that date as a Championship Saturday and we don’t even have a championship.

“My guess is Boise State will be picked to win the WAC. History has shown that that is a pretty high probability. Looking at the teams that are going to make a run, Nevada is a logical team. Whether they’ll be picked No. 2 is unknown, but it wouldn’t surprise me.”

  53. Garret April 2, 2009 8:19 am

Nevada is sure getting a lot of national TV games…

Nevada, coming off a 7-6 season that included a 42-35 loss to Maryland in the Humanitarian Bowl, could pick up a sixth nationally televised game if The Mtn. Network airs the Colorado State game in Fort Collins on Sept. 19.

  54. BigWave96744 April 2, 2009 8:20 am

happy birthday to Brett “the Icecube” Symonds
and a belated birthday to the April 1st boy Austin Hansen

  55. Garret April 2, 2009 8:20 am

NONE of Nevada’s ESPN games will be on Saturday!

The Wolf Pack will play six teams that made bowl-game appearances last season and will play in at least five nationally televised games. The first will be the season-opener at Notre Dame on Sept. 5 (NBC). The other four will be on ESPN or ESPN2, and none of the four will be played on a Saturday (three Fridays and a Sunday).

  58. Garret April 2, 2009 8:22 am

BSU gets a half-week extra to prepare for UH. Fresno State gets a bye week to prepare for UH. Nevada doesn’t get any extra days…though they get Idaho and Utah State in the weeks before they play UH, and they are home against Idaho the week before they play UH in Nevada.

  59. Garret April 2, 2009 8:24 am

    jm2375,

I agree with you! If BSU really felt they are so much better than UH and the rest of the WAC, they should be happy to show that on a nationally-televised Friday game at Aloha Stadium. Instead, they will play UH with 3 extra days to prepare and no TV to show the game…

  60. djmitcho April 2, 2009 8:25 am

    Mr. C,
Send plenty of da Hawaiian Sunshine dis way please. I don’t know about Snoqualmie though, I’m too far away from it to be worried about it.

  61. Garret April 2, 2009 8:26 am

The schedule is set and the Warriors won’t make excuses, they will play the games and show their worth. However, finding out that UH could have had an ESPN game at Aloha Stadium against BSU but BSU turned it down really makes me unhappy. Having that game would have been great for UH recruiting also, as local recruits could be invited to attend the game and the mainland recruits would be able to watch the game.

  62. Garret April 2, 2009 8:27 am

I’ll stop posting now and wait for Pro Day updates from ST. I hope that the 40 times are going well!

Boise State is the flagship for the USS WAC and they deserve the status from top to bottom.

    Previledge comes with rank.
That means first crack at scheduling.

Until we unseat them with a better athletic organization and superior football teams, year-in-and-year-out, we will be reduced to nilly-willy whinners.

ST just called and scolded me for not being there but I’m prepping for a meeting at 3 and didn’t have the time to head down to Carson. We may try and hook up tonight at UCLA for the men’s VB match.

BTW, everyone shrunk on their heights – Mouton and Vekune almost an inch. Must be the cold weather compressed everyone.

WarriorFanny ~ Why would you want to spread that kind of negativity on the Warrior Beat? If you want to beat the bossie drum, take it to their blog site.

We support our Warriors win or lose. Even with the WAC supporting boise, we still whooped their okoles in ’07. No doubt that we’ll sting ’em again in front of God and everyone this year.

The way you’ve been talking lately, I’m begining to wonder about your blog handle. WarriorFanny? Doesn’t seem like it to me.

  119. Garret April 2, 2009 11:49 am

    Garret:
I just made reservations for the San Jose game. Are you going to that game?

I’ve been on the blog off and on and have seen references to the UNLV and WSU games (can’t go because have other plans on the east coast – LTUHF has been advising me), but nothing yet about San Jose. I also emailed a friend who is active with the Hawaii Chamber of Commerce of Northern California‏. I saw him at the San Jose game 2 years ago. In his e-mail response, he said he would provide updates about their San Jose and Nevada tailgate activities, which I will share with the blog.

    lakesidegt,

I am 99% sure that I will be able to make it to the SJSU game…the only possible snag is that I didn’t expect the game to be so late in the schedule (11/21) and I might need to be in DC then.

We’ll set up something with the blog unless there is something already going to be set up. It would be great for you to pass along the SJSU and Nevada tailgate information! I’m sure that either Friday night or Sunday we’ll have another gathering…maybe at that Korean BBQ buffet place we had a small gathering at last year. I’d bet that brew808 would vote for that place!

My going to the SJSU game doesn’t require much planning or money since I’ll be driving my family up to the Bay Area and staying with friends in either Palo Alto or San Jose. The Palo Alto friends have the bigger house but the San Jose friends are closer to the stadium.

  120. layson April 2, 2009 11:50 am

    roysan, duffer

michelle wie sits tied for 16th place, pretty good considering she
only hit 9 greens in regulation. she putted well duffer, ten 1 putts and 25 total putts. her driving off the tee was pretty good, 9 out of 14 fairways hit. unless she starts hitting more greens though, it will be very difficult for her to contend come sunday. to make a comparison, leader brittany lincicome hit 16 gir.

  124. al ™ April 2, 2009 12:02 pm

i still believe that mouton gets drafted.
he’s run a 4.45 and a 4.42 pulling up lame the last 10 yds. that probably equates to a 4.3+ and that vertical and broad jump!

  125. Garret April 2, 2009 12:03 pm

Too bad for Mouton’s hamstring injury…I had been worried about that.

Are those times the official times or selected hand time numbers? Hand timed numbers can vary significantly, as we have seen in the past. If he’s credited with the 4.42, that would be fine for Mouton.

Josh Leonard’s pro-agility time is VERY impressive!

  132. Kekoa April 2, 2009 12:19 pm

    roysan 16 ~ I don’t agree.

    1. Boise is the best what?…the best never lose. They have.

    2. Top Dogs get top billing? Not here in Hawaii. Not at any other opponents house. We stole the media from them during our highlight year. Who goes to Boise for vacations or to get married?

    3. We are moving into the limelight once again. This year we may be more of a ‘top’ team then them. IMHO of course.

Roysan16 ~ Thanks for your opinion. Sometimes it’s hard for me to reign myself in. I need to be more civil. I always get scoldings from Diana about going postal.

    2. Top dogs get top billing, fact of life
    3. Unless UH becomes topdog then we’ll always be in the background

    this is all true

If I may add to the highlighted above… well maybe not… we could eventually win a BCS bowl and have it called a “fluke”, we could be a PAC 10 team in the Hawaii Bowl, which we did in 2006, and they called it home advantage regardless of the extra week AZ State had to prepare and arrive in Hawaii to get used to the time difference, etc…

For us to be seen as a legitimate Division I football team in the eyes of the continent, or some scorned locals, we’d have to win the National Championship aka given the BCS Secured Trust Trophy.

Until then it seems ANYTHING we do that is a positive step forward is construed as a “fluke”.

Which is why I VOW to no longer care what the mainstream media says about UH. 2009 I will give no credence to the talking heads at College GameDay when it comes to UH athletics.

Fans like us are around the program and pay attention to everything happening.

Does it mean we ignore the problems inherit in the athletic department? No, but at the same token, the image of UH athletics has been dragged through the mud, and while most of it can be attributed to PAST failures and misjudgment, steps are slowly being taken to correct this and it is through the understanding of the State of Hawaii bureaucracy and SLOOOOWWW process we appreciate what is being done to improve things for the fans of UH athletics and the student athletes that we cheer for on a daily basis.

  137. Garret April 2, 2009 12:27 pm

    roysan16,

I’m glad that you find my blog of use. I did a similar thing for the LA Lakers back in the 90s and it proved to very useful whenever I had to look up things. Sadly, that domain (www.lakerquotes.com) and the content in it was lost after I stopped doing it.

I prefer doing this for the Warrior program and am happy to use a blogging software that should keep the quotes available forever. At first, I did it just as a resource for me when I wanted to look up things…but it ends up getting used quite a bit now as a resource.

I didn’t realize that search software was pointing people to my blog–I’ve tried to start including links to the articles in the local papers so that people can get the full articles there. However, sometimes the archives don’t preserve the article so at least the quotes can be saved.

The traffic on my blog is enough that I had advertisers contact me for years. However, I didn’t take any sponsors until I realized how difficult financial condition UH was and how I could donate the money to the program. I think I’ll pick up a few more sponsors before the season begins and I can write one decent size check to Na Koa, instead of sending something small several times per year.

  138. Kazz April 2, 2009 12:36 pm

    Kekoa,

Like you and Mr. A-House, I enjoy your emotions on the blog. Nothing wrong with RAW emotion and “making noise” for the home team. We are fans and it is our right to be as biased as much as we want. Are we wrong sometimes? Maybe, but that doesn’t matter to us because we are fans. Fandom can’t be taken to court and can’t be judged, that’s what makes the world of sports such a great release from the “red-tape” of life.

Someone once told me, the first reaction tends to be the correct one.

Of course correct in one’s own personal philosophies and beliefs. So NEVER question it.

***This little rant is for all da Tsaikos, especially FloridaTed who is most likely reading this and ready fo SCRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!

  139. Garret April 2, 2009 12:38 pm

    Kekoa,

Sadly, I have to agree mostly with roysan16 on this issue.

Over the past 5+ years, BSU has lost MUCH less than UH. Right now they have the best success in the WAC for football, which is why it hurts the WAC so much when they beg the MWC to take them in.

UH had the media attention for one year (2007), but the past 5+ years BSU football has had much more national attention than UH. Nobody is going to think of them for travel resorts, but the typical ESPN viewer must follow BSU much more than UH…or ESPN would have chosen more UH games. ESPN had the power to choose what games they wanted–they are showing so many BSU and Nevada games and *not* the US-BSU and UH-Nevada games etc.

I agree that the Warriors might grab the spotlight back from BSU this year, which would be great! The TV scheduling snubs and the media criticisms would make that much sweeter for UH fans. However, UH is going to have to win the WAC several years in a row before we can claim to have surpassed BSU. Hopefully that will start this year!

The key is to win the WAC consistently. With that comes respect that is earned on the field. No matter how highly we think of the Warriors, what counts is what happens on the field.

  140. koakane™ April 2, 2009 12:38 pm

  142. Garret April 2, 2009 12:42 pm

Maybe my planned April Fool’s series of posts will actually come true? Washington is apparently trying to trade Campbell for a second round pick, as their going after Cutler makes him want to leave Washington:

The Washington Post’s Jason La Canfora writes that in publicly lusting after Cutler, the Redskins now have to move Campbell to avoid the situation the Broncos currently find themselves after word leaked that they were interested in Matt Cassel.

    Ironic, I know.

Compounding matters: if Washington just sends draft picks to Denver for Cutler, and Campbell remains on the roster, it would be virtually impossible to trade him for a second-rounder, which is the ‘Skins current asking price.

… [B]ut two executives said that if the Skins are stuck with Cutler and Campbell, they may have to settle for a third[-round pick] or worse. No one would be rushing to help alleviate Washington’s problems now, and the execs said it would be silly for a club to go ahead and trade a second for Campbell, given the uncertainty with the Cutler deal.

On the upside, if Washington loses out on Cutler and trades Campbell for something less than a second-round pick, there’s still Colt Brennan.

  143. Garret April 2, 2009 12:44 pm

    koakane,

Your #140 said it better, and shorter, than what I tried to say. We should give BSU respect, as the respect they have will make the Warriors look that much better after UH beats them this year.

  144. Kazz April 2, 2009 12:46 pm

    ***Off topic***

I played NCAA 2009 last night on the Heisman level against Navy. Final score was UH 55 Navy 27.

Navy ran all over my okole in the first half and at one point had a 27-7 lead. Kept running 46-bear defesive formations with QB spies or base 4-3 Under and Over formations with minimal success. There were too many gaps when using the base 4-3 and the distance between the LBs and the HBs proved to be too much for comfort.

Was 27-24 going to the half. Then proceeded to shut down Navy with consecutive 3 and outs in the 3rd quarter using the good ‘ole 4-4 defense with “dog-blitz” formations to get those HEAVY run blitzes to send at least 3 LBs in the backfield to mess up their Triple Option offense.

Of course the deep ball threat was always in the back of my mind. The 4-2-5 nickle zone blitz package maintaining a Cover 3 look got some good coverage while mainting 5 blitzers (involving 3 down linemen one rushing LB, and the blitzing nickelback). This helped to hold Navy to 0 points in the second half.

I’ll play Wisconsin tonight and see how this goes.

I have great respect for the coaching staff at Boise St for they have instilled a winners attitude that the players gobble up and train hard, I believe much harder than UH, during off-season. Players do their assignment and do it well.

Getting talented players from California who do not want to go to the PAC10 greatly assist their cause.

Yes, BSU has been the top of the WAC, but there have been “chinks in their armor”, that with a little luck another team could have beaten them, and they would not have been WAC champs for 5 or 6 consecutive years. Several years, UH should have beaten them, but did not.

I believe UH has already continue their rise in the WAC – champs in 2007 and #2 in 2008. Would not surprise me UH takes the WAC in 2009 – it will take a lot of hard work and determination on the part of all coaches and players – no more stupid penalties and harsher discipline by the coaches for “unsportsman like conduct” – set out the rules early and stick to the “penalties” for breaking the rules (retaliation penalties and out of the game; break team rule and player is on the earliest available plane home, etc. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!) – Coach Mack needs to gather the team captains and tell them what his rules are and what he expects from them -they must take a stronger role in talking to peers about their attitude and mistakes that cost the team penalties – if team captains cannot do this then they should not accept the challenge.

Luck, bounce of the ball, etc may negate talent on either side and UH needs to make their own luck and capitalize on it such as a turn over and quick score because every player did his assignment correctly (emphasis on doing assignment correctly)

Why was UH able to stay with Florida for an entire quarter in 2008? If Alexander’s pass over the middle was not high and intercepted it would have been UH 7 – Florida 0. If Tebow’s fumble did NOT kick back to him, it would have been turnover to UH. All of this in the first quarter.

I agree with you 1000%, been positing this concept for years. Teams like Florida, USC, Oklahoma, BSU have players with class, they just play hardnosed football and abstain from the lolo things you listed. Actions speak louder than words, just watch these teams on Saturday. Combine the total unsportmanlike penalties of these teams last year and probably not even close to UH’s total.

I am a Warrior supporter, same seats at Aloha Stadium for over 25 years. I am sick & tired of lolo type no class actions of a few selfish players!

    Kekoa,

I have to admit that if we had romped thru the WAC last year the way BS-You did, I would be pretty upset if Benson wasn’t pumping UH like he is the Bunkos now.
Esp. when you look at their returning a QB like Moore and RB like Avery and all the other personnel they got coming back, again if it were UH, I’d expect no less.

It’ll just make kickin’ their okoles that much better! 😉

  186. Pauoa Boy April 2, 2009 2:58 pm

The following is just my opinion on what I saw today, I know ST has better insight though…

David Veikune – Did himself well in the Linebacker Drills and probably improved his stock as he is definitely capable of OLB in a 3-4 scheme. I believe the scouts were equally impressed, and he will be drafted fairly high. I do believe he is a definite first day guy.

Josh Leonard – Besides beastin on the 225lb lifts, he also did very well in the DLine drills and improved his stock too. Overheard some scouts thinking he could be a late round draft pick.

Fale Laeli – Actually had a pretty good 40yd. I think he was clocked at 4.9 and 5.0 consecutively. Other than that he really didn’t stand out.

Adam Leonard – Looked good in LB Drills but seemed a tad slow in the mobility department. He has some pretty good mitts catching the ball too. Regardless he could be drafted but I’m leaning towards Free Agency.

Solomon Elimimian – Solly to me had a rough day. I think he was frustrated doing the running drills and even the position drills. It seemed he was trying too hard and at times during the drills would lose his footing. He also had trouble with the backpedal and change of direction drill. I’d say Free Agent.

Francis Maka – He surprised me during the Linebacker Drills. He as well as David Veikune stood out. He is pretty mobile for a big guy and actually had some decent hands catching the ball. Free Agent

Ryan Perry – He is pretty dayum quick, but dropped alot of balls today. I honestly don’t think he has a chance at the NFL level.

Ryan Mouton – He looked like he bulked up eventhough his weight may deem otherwise. Anyway, he is definitely on the radar of NFL scouts with what he did at the combine and his performance today. Eventhough he eased up on the 40yd. he is frikkin fast. Mid to Late Round Pick.

Jameel Dowling – Seems like he did so-so today. He missed a couple balls in the DB drills. Didn’t see much else of him.

Calvin Roberts – He was probably the best looking DB out there today. He is pretty quick and has good footwork. Did well in DB drills too. Possible Free Agent

Keith AhSoon – Looked good during the drills but still a little too slow for my tastes. Anyway, I’d say Free Agent

Erik Robinson – I don’t think he has enough speed to play at the NFL level. Looked slow compared to the others and doesn’t blast out of his breaks well. He too dropped a couple balls during drills.

Tim Grasso – Was consistently booming some 50 yarders. Could have a tryout somewhere maybe.

Jake Ingram – He needs to gain some muscle, too lean for my taste. Regardless he is definitely the best long snapper coming out of college. His snaps are quick and on point every time.

Anyway, I know I may be missing a few more names but there was alot going on at one time.

Also saw Ryan Grice-Mullens, Karl Noa, Abraham Elimimian, Jeremy Perry (Kahuku/OSU alum), Vaka Manapuna (St. Louis/Colorado/AFL)

    Justin,

Solly didn’t look like he did as well as he wanted to on the 40yd. Not sure of his time but he pulled up once and I thought it was his hammy but he ran again and finished. He may have clocked somewhere in the 4.7ish range I’m thinkin?

  197. homey ℞ April 2, 2009 3:22 pm

  198. Pauoa Boy April 2, 2009 3:24 pm

    al,

I felt bad for Solly today I could see his frustration on his face during the drills. He did look alot thicker but had problems keeping his footing during his breaks and cuts on the change of direction drills. I know Solly is a gamer but today just seemed like a bad day for him. IMO

  199. al ™ April 2, 2009 3:26 pm

i think those guys at the combine have either the correct timing devices or a slow hand.

i would think that perhaps one or two teams will covet ryan mouton as a slot receiver since that is so envogue.

  200. Stephen Tsai April 2, 2009 3:27 pm

Actually, Solomon checked in at 225.
He was bothered by a tight hamstring.

  201. Stephen Tsai April 2, 2009 3:28 pm

    Elimimian ran a 4.75

  202. Pauoa Boy April 2, 2009 3:29 pm

Josh Leonard is a beast, but he is pretty mobile for a big guy. I think he may have moved himself into a late round draft pick with his performance today. I’m not sure of his exact weight but he looks to be in the 300ish range.

  203. Stephen Tsai April 2, 2009 3:31 pm

Vaka Manapuna also benched 225 pounds 41 times.
But, you know, since I only cover UH …

  204. Pauoa Boy April 2, 2009 3:32 pm

    ST,

I don’t know about you but Vaka looked like a frikkin animal out there, he’s frikkin huge.

  205. Stephen Tsai April 2, 2009 3:33 pm

Josh Leonard came in a little bit light: 283. He said he was nervous and had difficulty maintaining weight the past couple of days. But he should easily reach 290.
Mouton also cut his weight to try to improve his 40 time. NFL has him on record at 185, but he was 179 today.

  206. Stephen Tsai April 2, 2009 3:34 pm

By the way, Pauoa Boy should be an NFL scout.
His observations are right on the mark.
And he was quick to pick up Maka’s position change.

  207. Pauoa Boy April 2, 2009 3:39 pm

ST – I wish I was an NFL scout but yup Francis Maka looked pretty good during the linebacker drills. Coach Mack was sitting right next to me as we watched and I think even he was surprised by Maka.

  208. Pauoa Boy April 2, 2009 3:47 pm

“At the end of a video blog the UFC posted on YouTube on Wednesday, White launched into an expletive-filled diatribe against Loretta Hunt, a mixed martial arts reporter for Sherdog.com”

“In one two-plus minute rant, White undid much of the good he’s done while building the UFC into a billion-dollar business and, perhaps, saving mixed martial arts from extinction, by offending gays, women and mentally handicapped people”

What I think about him the MMA President Dana White

Obviously he’s not politically correct. And prosperity hasn’t changed him one bit, same person now with a billion dollars in his pocket as he was if he had ten….reminds me of Mike Tyson, both with little decorum and refinement…

About Perry’s arm, I didn’t notice it until late into last season and I think ST mentioned what happened to him at birth. It was unfortunate, but that sure didn’t stop him from playing Division I college football.

You are right on about his speed though. On the practice squad before the Florida game while they had “Steele-bo” at QB they had Ryan Perry as the HB to try to simulate the speed of Florida’s top HB’s.

All this “who’s better than who” crap is bogus, and we could argue all night over it. I hope you can understand where my core complaint was coming from.

I understand your core complaint and respect your feelings. I hate it when fans from other teams go to another team’s site and trash talk…Warrior fans have been guilty of that also and I don’t like it then either.

Change is in the wind. boise will have to get used to getting pushed around starting this season.

I completely agree with this! The best thing for UH is to beat BSU and win the WAC, over and over, until BSU’s pleas to the MWC looks like they are trying to run away from UH.

I don’t like putting down *any* WAC team, since it is good for UH to have BSU get a lot of hype and national respect. The better BSU, Nevada, Fresno State, La Tech, and others get, the better the WAC…and the more respect that UH will get when the Warriors win the WAC.

The national media already puts down the WAC, especially the bottom half of the WAC that really need to improve. When the conference gets stronger, the respect for the WAC will increase and UH will be in a better position. BSU won’t want to leave and maybe other teams will want to get into the WAC. I remember BYU’s President 2 years ago openly saying that he wished they were on ESPN like the WAC teams…strengthen the WAC and teams might seriously ask to join the WAC and turn it into a BCS-worthy conference.

  229. Jason April 2, 2009 6:57 pm

Glad to see that Mouton and Josh Leonard did well. Both of them are pro quality players, but they needed to wow the scouts with measurables because of different things. With Mouton, the position changes hurt his stock a little bit, and teams weren’t really throwing to him so they didn’t get to see his closing speed on film. With Leonard, his injury set him back a good amount, but he’s healthy now, and showing it. The first time I saw him this fall, I thought he was going to be a beast for us. Glad to see he might have a shot now. Maybe he could sneak in the late rounds, who knows. With Mouton, as long as that’s a minor tweak and not something that lingers as he heads out to private workouts, he’s solidified a mid-round grade. And Veikune, sounds like he’s solidified himself in that 2nd-3rd range, good for him.

Conference “bottom dwellers” in the WAC may get stronger, but anyone see Idaho or New Mexico State beating the top tier teams in the next 5 years? Same could be said for the bottom tier of all conferences.

In the WAC, besides UH and Fresno St, none of the other top teams schedule tough teams more that 300 miles from their school. Bosie St is comfortable playing Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, and Washington State. I would like to see them travel East of the Rocky Mountains to play to top teams in other conferences and test their mettle. Riding a bus for 2 hours is a lot different than flying across 3 time zones and play a good team.

With the upsets in the SEC last season, will there be some upward mobility for Mississippi and Mississippi St? Didn’t both sign a top QB for 2009?

  237. roysan16 April 2, 2009 8:14 pm

These are some pretty tough away games for the WAC teams

    New Mexico State
    Oct. 31 at Ohio St.

    Louisiana Tech
    Sept. 5 at Auburn
    Sept. 12 at Navy
    Nov. 14 at LSU

    Nevada
    Sept. 5 at Notre Dame
    Sept. 19 at Colorado State

    San Jose St.
    Sept. 5 at USC
    Sept. 19 at Stanford

    Utah State
    Sept. 3 at Utah

    New Mexico State
    Oct. 31 at Ohio St.

    Boise State
    Sept. 26 at Bowling Green
    Oct. 14 at Tulsa

Fresno State—they’ll play anyone, anywhere…this is evident
    Sept. 12 at Wisconsin
    Sept. 26 at Cincinnati
    Dec. 5 at Illinois

  238. Garret April 2, 2009 8:31 pm

Duane Akina has brought back rugby-style punting, and now he’s even getting the punter at Texas to punt with both feet!

A year after introducing the rugby punting style to its game, Texas is adding to that repertoire.

It’s trying to get the right-footed Tucker to punt left-footed.

Tucker used the running rugby style last fall, employing the tactic first to successfully thwart Missouri kick-returner extraordinaire Jeremy Maclin. In all, Texas used Tucker’s rugby kicks — in which he runs toward a sideline and the boots a line-drive punt — 14 times for a 45.2-yard average without a block.

Oklahoma State used the tactic against Texas. And Texas coaches have been approached this offseason by coaches from Auburn and Louisville interested in learning about the unconventional style.

Texas special-teams coordinator Duane Akina was part of an Arizona staff that embraced both the left and right-footed punting styles there in the early 1990s. “It’s a real advantage,” Akina said. “When the ball hits the ground, it runs. We’re getting a lot of calls about it. It’s coming back.”

  239. Garret April 2, 2009 8:36 pm

    A-House,

NMSU signed a great coach after the season, a coach who I thought would get a Pac-10 job soon. Utah State just got a huge budget increase due to the student fee vote…and Utah State did beat the #2 team in the WAC last year. La Tech had some really down years, but they won their bowl game last season and they have had some good recruiting classes. La Tech is the best example of a team that can turn themselves around after being in the lower-tier of the WAC.

Idaho worries me as I don’t see solid signs of improvement. If they don’t improve, their attendance could drop to the point where they lose D-IA status.

Geez, LaT is nutz….maybe not, the protocol son does his own scheduling, if Dooley hits paydirt or even close, he’ll be an SEC candidate, for now he’s a WAC wannabee whose mouth needs to be miked on the sidelines.

LOL. Boise State has the most to lose–trap door teams–BG gave them fits on big blue last year and the MAC is on the rise. Tulsa reloads–yikes the Broncs play these two middies on the road.

UMSU has a new coach and after their game with Ohio State, they may be looking for another.
Their recruiting was anything but inspiring.

Best of luck to all the former warriors who attended Pro Day!

I’m gonna hope that having Bess, Grice-Mullen, Rivers and Mouton get, er, “hamstrung” when running the 40 is just unbelievably bad luck or coincidence. If not, someone’s gotta do something about injury prevention. Also hoping Mouton won’t get penalized for reaggravating his hamstring, if you don’t get on that “injury-prone” bandwagon I see nothing wrong with a 4.42 40 (at least if that’s an “accepted” time amongst the scouts/NFL personnel folks). Great analysis from Pauoa Boy.

  265. warriorfanny April 2, 2009 9:26 pm

    Garret,

u r absolutely on spot with DeWayne Walker.
I met him in the summer of 2001 at USC where he was a DB
coach under Carroll and ran into him several times since.

He is polite, unassuming and a genuine gentleman.

Former DC at UCLA before taking the NMSU HC position,
I too was surprised the aggies snatched him–the aggies AD, Dr McKinley Boston, a wonder in himself, has to be credited with the collar.

Dr Boston also recruited Reggie Theus as the HC for the aggies basketball program in 2005.

NMSU is fortunate and Coach Walker brings a history of D with his resume.
It will be a glaring contrast to the aggies wide open O of yesteryears under Hal Mumme but D is good and it will be interesting to see what he can do in our conference.

It will take some time but he is making believers already.
You can bet, NMSU will be quick on D with a steady stream of nfl-type CBs.

    nickel back on defense.
    kick returner on special teams.
    quick slot receiver on offense.

utilizing his quickness, speed, athleticism, and toughness throughout the whole game. he would dazzle and become a crowd favorite especially if he played texas. not too mention a millionaire.

Re-Do I think the WAC and ESPN slighted UH in giving UH lesser top billing and television exposure than other WAC teams? No, I don’t. And these are the reasons.

For UH these are the facts, no players on the All-Wac Freshmen team, and 1 returning All-Wac First Team player (Estes).

When ESPN scours the rosters and looks and disects all of the WAC team’s rosters and the returning star players in the league for the 2009 season, do you think they see many from UH? No. Do they see Nevada with seven (+2 from the All-WAC freshmen team) , Boise with six (+5 from the All-WAC freshmen team) and Louisiana with 5 (+4 All-WAC Freshmen) as the predominate teams in the WAC with the most proven players? Yes, definitely.Compared to the aforementioned teams, what do they see as proven players or stars on UH roster…very little. Right?

So subsequently, the teams that have the most star returning players should receive the most television exposure. Right? If your a television executive and looked at Nevada’s returning star players (7+2) and 66 returning lettermen for the 2009 season wouldn’t you give Nevada top billing over UH, which has only 1 star player returning…I would think so. So, no I don’t think UH is being slighted by appearing in lesser ESPN games than Boise, Nevada and Louisiana Tech. The facts speak for themselves. If someone said if it would be surprising if UH finished 4th or 5th would that make them sound cynical? Maybe. But if you looked at the players returning they’re are more of the star players on the other team’s rosters than of UH. If your factor the players from the All-Wac freshmen team, players that have one year of development and look at UH freshmen players that have very little game experience experience there’s a huge gap there, too. So the bottom line is that UH has they’re work cut out for them–imo, next year’s going to be tough journey.

  320. warriorfanny April 2, 2009 11:12 pm

I dont see the WAC getting stronger except a continuation at the top with BSU, FSU and Hawaii.

Nevada and SJSU are in precarious positions becz they are being carried by legendary coaches on the brink of retirement and their programs alone cant be said to be solid.
It wasnt long ago when the Sparts were on life support.
Community support in Reno is always a stretch for football.

New Mexico State is in a position to improve given their AD and new coach. Solid talent there.

Agree with Garret on LaT’s turnaround, but we dont know how much longer they will sit in the WAC given their distance and Dooley’s youth and penchant to spring.

Student fees or not–u have to go wayback in Odgen’s time capsule before you find a winner….the point is program consistency and community support for football.
    Hoorah for their student body!

    Idaho is nearly comatose.
    Maybe it’s the Palouse?

The Warriors should not wait till pro day to get in shape. They need to be in shape and ready to go in college instead of looking fat and soft like ST’s OL pictures. Why don’t these players realize that drinking beer and eating pizza will make them have a tough Spring practice. Only hard work will get the fans to back you up.

Maybe that’s why there was mentioned yesterday bout coach Nash on some talk show had emntioned a third scholarship being available?

The only way Crabtree possibly could benefit from his decision is by running a blazing time. However, he was never expected to post a phenomenal time in the 40-yard dash, so this is very unlikely.
