Don't know much about geography …

What a wonderful world this would be if I actually had the correct state for Butte College.
I wrote that it was in Montana.
It’s actually in California. Hey, maybe Washington and UCLA recruiting poachers will go off to the wrong place.
Anyway, a UH coach told me: “I hope you’re not a UH grad.”
This was like the first time I tried to go to BYU. I didn’t realize that Brigham Young was in the opposite direction of Brigham, Utah.

UH’s Pro Day, a combine/audition for NFL scouts, is scheduled for April 2 at the Home Depot Center at Carson, Calif. David Veikune, Ryan Mouton, Adam Leonard, Solomon Elimimian and Jake Ingram are among the former Warriors who will participate.

* * *

Each player received a workout shirt. Written on the back: WAC Champions in Training. Defensive tackle Keahi Watson is modeling the shirt; the “guns” are extra:

Here’s linebacker Waylon Lolotai, who joined the Warriors after a church mission to St. Louis. Lolotai’s grandfather was the first player of Samoan ancestry to play in the NFL.

This dog “adopted” running back/linebacker Jake Heun, following him around the school.

Thanks to some donors, the foyer to the UH coaches’ offices now has new carpet (check out the H logo), new couches and, as we’ve mentioned before, four TVs.

Just got off the phone with Riley. He’s taking credit for Obama’s election. He said that in 1979, he went to Punahou to recruit. He signed Dan Hale and passed on the left-handed shooter. That allowed the future president to go to a Mainland school and eventually embark on a political career. And I always thought Riley’s greatest accomplishment was to get Ray Reed to pass the ball.

Greg McMackin and his wife, Heather, have enrolled in Hawaiian studies classes.

Happy (really) belated birthday to Janet Yoshida Bullard, one of the leaders of the UH Alumni Association and a Rough Rider classmate.

Feature article on UH recruit Wadsworth.

Growing up in Provo, Utah, Wadsworth dreamed of scoring touchdowns for the local high school and, eventually, BYU.

But Wadsworth, now a senior at Silverado High, was undersized and his parents, who feared their son would be injured, ignored his pleas to play youth football each fall.

Finally, when Wadsworth entered seventh grade, his parents caved in and let him join the town’s junior high team. Despite competing in the lightweight division — the smallest weight limit of three classifications — Wadsworth was the league’s top player and would routinely score four touchdowns each game.

Wadsworth, a safety and kick returner, is one of four players with ties to Henderson who are expected to sign letters of intent on Feb. 4.

Not many players Wadsworth’s size — he was 5-foot-9, 120 pounds as a freshman — go on to play in college.

But, then again, not many have the drive of Wadsworth.

“He has such a passion for football,” said Patti Wadsworth, his mother. “It’s just unbelievable to watch him play, knowing that is my son out there doing so well. At first, I was nervous because he was so small, but he knew the game so well and was always one of the fastest. Nobody could catch him.”

  7. Garret January 27, 2009 6:47 am

I’m glad that Wadsworth has worked so hard and grown.

Wadsworth — who thanks to natural growth and his dedication to weight training is now 6-foot-1, 190 pounds — made a name for himself as one of Nevada’s top players as a junior in 2007. He had eight kickoff or punt returns for touchdowns to help Silverado win the Southeast Division title.

“I always thought I would grow, but I wasn’t sure when it would happen,” Wadsworth said. “When you are smaller, you definitely have to find a way around the bigger kids. I learned how to maneuver. I just like trying to make something out of nothing.”

That kind of dedication is what makes Wadsworth a steal for Hawaii. With the Skyhawks depleted at several positions in football, Wadsworth played virtually every spot on the field trying to salvage the season.

“Let’s put it this way, I have never coached a more complete player who did everything for the team,” Silverado football coach Andy Ostolaza said. “From the kick returning to playing multiple spots on each side of the ball, I haven’t had a kid do so many different things. And, as a student, how can you beat a 4.0 guy?”

USC got a commit from the #1 DE in the country (Kennard) today and Manti visits them this weekend.

One of the better linebackers in the country, Manti Te’o (Honolulu Punahou; the alma mater of President Barack Obama), is set to visit USC this weekend.

He supposedly has eliminated Stanford and BYU from consideration and is expected to sign with the Trojans, Bruins or Notre Dame.

What concerns me about Pro Day for these guys (heck, this concerns me every year) is the speed of the area where they will be running their 40s and other running drills. I know many people believe 40 times are overrated — myself included — but that doesn’t mean you ignore them. I believe the 40 times are going to be important for all of these guys, especially the bubble guys in Solly and Adam. Good 40 and shuttle times could possibly open up possibilities that were previously closed because of defensive philosophies that certain teams hold.

  47. Stephen Tsai January 27, 2009 11:44 am

And the answer to everyone’s question is, well, no I can’t get anyone the new workout shirt. Well, maybe I can “find” one. But, say, is that hot-potato salad I smell …

Great to see the foyer to the coaches’ offices looking much nicer than before! Everything that can help make a positive impression with recruits and with making the environment more pleasant for coaches and players is important.

  59. al ™ January 27, 2009 12:07 pm

some of us saw that butte (mont.) error, but, was nice not to bring it up. main thing is that we keep that butte college pipeline a humming along.

interestingly, while many were after his teammate/opposite corner, preston pace, it looks like we got the real gem in lametrius davis who had an outstanding game in the cali jc championship game. besides he is a helluva recruiter, helpin us secure alex green.

is his teammate, josh bellamy also on the radar? rumors have it as such. a jason rivers type wr.

  60. (Jesse) James January 27, 2009 12:08 pm

whitey…nope…but new Tsaiko shirts are being worked on….maybe have them by spring ball.

  61. Garret January 27, 2009 12:12 pm

    Jason,

My big worry about Pro Day is the quality of the track they are running on and how fast it is. Wasn’t the track they ran on considered slow last year? Supposedly the times would be adjusted upwards to compensate for the fast tracks that other teams used for Pro Day…but when you see 40 times compared, they never adjust for slow surfaces.

I also hope that the problem with training, stretching, or the surface has been corrected since last year’s UH Pro Day. I remember how Bess, RGM, and Rivers suffered injuries (I remember a lot of hamstring pulls), which meant that Colt basically had to throw out the plans they had for the passing drills and throw to 3 stationary receivers. That prevented Colt, Bess, RGM, and Rivers from helping their draft stock much with the passing drills…you know they would have done well with that! Hawthorne was basically the only healthy receiver for UH at the end of Pro Day and he earned his NFL shot.

  62. takemetoyourleader January 27, 2009 12:14 pm

    I’m committed

  63. lava January 27, 2009 12:15 pm

we’ve got to thank June jones and colt brennan-their actions helped the program increase its recruiting budget, to bring donors to come forward and make a donation for cooke/ching field and the coaches lounges…even got us a new AD. I don’t think any of this would have happened had June remained here and Hermie staying on as AD

  65. Stephen Tsai January 27, 2009 12:20 pm

Not as good as the Want It Badder signs.

  66. Jason January 27, 2009 12:21 pm

Garret: Exactly. They do supposedly adjust for slow tracks too, but that science is harder to be accurate with. I’ve seen some guys run expected times on slow tracks, while others are 0.1+ sec slower. I definitely prefer a faster track to slower tracks, which is why I’m concerned.

  67. al ™ January 27, 2009 12:23 pm

i see that the primer is still on the walls of the foyer. they really could use some help with the interior decorating.

i was thinking some 3D graphics on some black and green walls would be nice. some lifesized colt brennans, davone bess’, ikaika’s, noga’s, etc.

  68. Ralph January 27, 2009 12:25 pm

I think the pro scouts made adjustments to the times for athletes running on a slow field…but anyone running a 4.57 40 at the skilled position would be considered slow, you can adjust a fraction on the time but not a whole second or more….remember Peters was labeled as very fast but his 40 time was worst than Rivers…and I’m sure the scouts considered game speed into the equation…Francisco found a niche with the cardinals as a nickel back at safety and special teams so I am hopeful Peters will stick with the Bears in similar capacity.

  69. al ™ January 27, 2009 12:25 pm

  71. Ralph January 27, 2009 12:28 pm

the home depot field is the state of the art, I can’t imagine it being a slower field than nfl fields

  72. al ™ January 27, 2009 12:30 pm

so, it appears to me that mr. lolotai has been working out. he must be a solid 230lbs.

  73. YpoWarrior January 27, 2009 12:42 pm

    Al,

I’d rather UH establish pipelines with high schools vs. JC’s. I think Coach Mack is moving towards recruiting almost exclusively HS players in the near future.

  74. Stephen Tsai January 27, 2009 12:42 pm

The Home Depot Center actually has many fields.
They run the 40 on artificial turf, and the plays on grass.

  75. Jason January 27, 2009 12:47 pm

Ralph: From everything I’ve heard, it’s a slow field. Doesn’t mean it’s a bad field, just that it’s slow.

And IIRC, one year Kenny Patton ran something good (4.4s?), while everyone else ran bad times. They said they would add .12 to each time, but considering how well Patton ran, I felt some teams might not question the speed of the field as heavily. It’s a lot easier to judge times on fast tracks, where slow is slow and fast is taken with a grain of salt. With slow tracks, however, it’s hard to accurately gauge your “true” time.

  76. A-House January 27, 2009 12:47 pm

    ST, good neighbor:

Are you at liberty to devulge the source of the nifty training shirts for the Warriors?

Did James tell us his new design or show anyone?

Are there any more people/companies who would like to donate labor and/or materials for the coaches offices?

Can someone identify what unfinished projects exist in the lower campus for those who are and can make the necessary contributions to improving the athletic department? We all know that these are tough times, but there maybe people or businesses who are willing to donate without putting out cash. Maybe a business does not have the materials, but willing to donate labor including the “unions”.

Excellent way to secure tax deductions and reducing bottom line and 2009 Fed & State taxes. Heck, with any publicity, the voluntors ( is there such a word ) may see an increase in business if people knew of their donations to UHAD. I know I would support such a business. I volunteer to be the “operations” coordinator if acceptable to Jim D.

  81. al ™ January 27, 2009 1:03 pm

    ypo….

true, that hs players are the eventual target. at this time, our numbers are askew in terms of the amount positional players that we have in each class. until we can get to that balanced roster “ideal”, we will need to tap the jc pipelines.

when the dust settles after a few good years of recruiting we will see fewer jc guys. picking only when a need arises or an athlete too good to refuse.

meanwhile, what better presence for us to have at the jc levels than the ones we do now? blinn cc, navarro cc, both perennial powers deep in the heart of texas. coupled with cali connections that we have established, such as san fran cc, butte cc, and san mateo cc all of them northern cal powerhouses. plus southern cal schools like saddleback, cod, etc.

  92. Jason January 27, 2009 1:17 pm

Actually, Davone ran a 4.59. And just because someone runs a good time, that doesn’t mean the track isn’t slow. Different players react differently to different tracks. All I’m saying is that I hope our players aren’t hindered whatsoever. It’s that potential that worries me, because those scouts are going to be looking for speed and acceleration, using 40 times (and split times) as tools to gauge that speed.

  93. Garret January 27, 2009 1:18 pm

BSU’s President says that their strategy to get the MWC to accept them is to schedule and beat MWC teams as often as possible.

Boise State president Bob Kustra said Tuesday morning that he considered recent comments by Mountain West Conference commissioner Craig Thompson a “final statement for now” on the Broncos’ hopes of joining the nine-team league.

Boise State is a member of the Western Athletic Conference, but Kustra has made no secret of his desire to join the Mountain West, which includes Utah, BYU, TCU, UNLV and Colorado State among its members.

Kustra said he discussed the situation with athletic director Gene Bleymaier and football coach Chris Petersen recently.

“I said it looks as though they’re looking for a model that works for a 10th team and the only way I know how to build a model like that for Boise State is to keep beating them in everything we play,” Kustra said.

Boise State’s football team was 12-0 against current Mountain West teams since 1996 before losing to TCU 17-16 in the Poinsettia Bowl in December.

The Broncos have dominated the WAC in football over the past decade, winning six conference titles in the last seven seasons.

  95. Garret January 27, 2009 1:19 pm

BSU tries to claim that they are not putting down the WAC…but every time the publicly talk about how they want to leave the WAC to join the MWC, that makes the WAC look much worse than the MWC. Public perception can lead to reality over time with recruits, fans, TV, etc.

“The WAC is getting stronger in some respects. This is not ever been about casting aspersions on the WAC as much as it’s been about a better fit in terms of competition in the intermountain West,” Kustra said.

  97. Garret January 27, 2009 1:22 pm

BSU isn’t getting a contract extension done for Chris Petersen. Petersen has *3* seasons left on his contract, so this isn’t like HF leaving JJ to coach in the final season of his contract.

Boise State athletic director Gene Bleymaier doesn’t expect to sign football coach Chris Petersen to a contract extension this winter, he said Monday.

“I think at this point we’re just going to leave it as it is and then deal with it in the future,” Bleymaier said. “He seems to be fine with it. Obviously we want to keep Coach Pete around and have every intention of doing so.”

Petersen is 35-4 in three seasons at Boise State with final rankings of No. 5 in 2006 and No. 11 in 2008.

He is entering the third year of a five-year contract that will pay him at least $1,112,650 in 2009. The contract, which has several bonus clauses and automatic raises based on wins, paid him $892,500 in 2007 and $1,090,833 in 2008.

Can we look forward to any recruiting surprises in the last week?

  100. Garret January 27, 2009 1:26 pm

Syracuse might steal the #1 all-purpose RB recruit in the country away from Tennessee and its $5.3 mil coaching staff. That RB was supposedly a solid commit to Tennessee…but Tennessee’s RB coach went to Syracuse.

Next Wednesday night, around 6:15, before the men’s basketball game, Marrone will announce his new recruits to the fans in the backcourt area behind the scoreboard. One of the names he’s really hoping to say is Oklahoma City tailback David Oku, who was one of many recruits making an official visit to SU this past weekend. Oku has verbally committed to Tennessee, but became an SU recruit after the Orange hired Tennessee’s former Running Back’s coach.

Oku is rated the number one all-purpose running back in the nation by one recruiting website. He is expected to make his final official visit to Auburn University this weekend.

  108. Hoohiki January 27, 2009 2:35 pm

    RE: Decor of the foyer/lounge

The H logo on the rug is awesome. The couch has got to go. It’s too sterile looking. The trophies need to be in a case. The decor is ok. It just doesn’t have style or appeal except for the H logo and the tvs. I guess you can say recruits or visitors probably don’t pay attention to stuff like that, but subliminally, it can affect the psyche. First impression is a big deal. It doesn’t cost much to give a welcoming mood. If I was to go there, I wouldn’t be too impressed, especially if I just took a recruiting trip to OSU or other PAC 10 schools or even some WAC schools.
You can make a statement without having to spend alot. We just don’t have to advertise that we don’t have much.

  109. al ™ January 27, 2009 2:40 pm

hoohiki…..and what about the cord for the tv. shouldn’t they have run it through the double wall or at least bought one of those plastic conduits or something and painted over it.

  110. chawan_cut January 27, 2009 2:48 pm

    Garret,
i found this site that’ll compare any div 1 team vs all other conferences.
    http://football.stassen.com/cgi-bin/records/confres.pl?start=1920&end=2008&team=Boise+State&limit=50
boise has done well against the MWC so far because they’ve played against teams that were bad or had bad years.
boise can say all they want about scheduling MWC schools, but doesn’t MWC has a say in this too? they could deny boise that chance.
and boise didn’t do so well against the MWC’s #2 team that did have a winning record this year in TCU. that just showed the BCS and the MWC that the broncos just weren’t as good as their undefeated record. (same goes for us and how we did at the sugar bowl).
every team in the WAC next year should use this as motivation to give the broncos a wake up call. you think you’re too good for us???

  111. BowsForever January 27, 2009 2:57 pm

Interesting. Obama could’ve been a Rainbow Warrior, eh?

  112. chawan_cut January 27, 2009 3:09 pm

just found boise’s out of conference schedule for next year. (records are for the ’08 year).

Sept. 5 vs. Oregon (10-3), Sept. 12 at Toledo (3-9), Sept. 19 vs. UC Davis (DivII, 5-7), Sept. 26 vs. Miami (Ohio) (2-10) and Oct. 3 at Tulsa (11-3).

Oregon is going to look for revenge after this year’s loss early in the season. they didn’t find themselves until later in the year. oregon wiped out oregon st’s chances for that rose bowl bid at corvallis.
Boise will take advantage of those 3 middle weak teams along with the lower half of the wac next year.
Tulsa lost their all everything QB, so no clue how good their backup is.
We’ll get em at our place though. PAYBACK. no 6 INTs for us this year.

I think Herman Frazier should be in the Circle of Honor.

He effected more change than any AD ever.
He caused more coaching change than any AD ever.
He woke everyone up as to the state of the athletic facilities.
He even got politicians to finally get off their duffs and do something.
He even shamed the lame duck governor to giving Cooke field a new turf or should credit go to Clarence Ching instead?
And all new recruits should thank him for the soap in the showers.
He got the football budget up to higher heights.
This list could go on and on. I guess HF is like the gift that keeps on giving as each day we learn about something he could have done.

Now, our new AD really had an easy job going in, all he had to do was pick up the pieces, uh huh. However, if JD wants to one day enter the Circle then he needs to now take us to the next level, one where the whole state will take pride in our athletics programs.

Just a thought.. Would it be out of the realm of possibility to “MAKE” incoming mainland individuals coming to coach at UH take this course? Not as a requirement to just get the job, but actually a PART of the job that will be evaluated along with their other coaching duties?

Of course, it would have to be structured so that it will NOT interfere with their usual coaching duties.

you see the neighbor’s pitbulls had escaped their encaged quarters and attacked the hs security guards nearby. in an act of bravery, diana went to their rescue and attempted to ward off the dogs (2, i believe). however, in their fury the pitbulls instead turned their attention upon ms. diana.

needless to say she was bitten in several areas and had loss quite a bit of blood. she was rushed to the emergency center. she is now resting at home. of course she has the best care, that of brother kekoa.

    roysan16,

With regard to your crusade against Dohn’s UCLA blog, you have to understand that 30-40% of the comments on the blog are from USC trolls trying to start a flame war.

No real UCLA fan would advocate “shutting the door on the Hawaii pipeline.” Micah Kia and Kai Maiava are current Bruins who are projected to start next year on the offensive line (well, maybe not Kia), Dalton Hilliard and Roby Toma have committed in the current recruiting class, UCLA fans were very upset when Stan Hasiak de-committed and committed to Cal, and pretty much every UCLA fan wants Manti Te`o to commit to UCLA.

You are making a difference though because in today’s entry (link above), a USC troll made fun of Neuheisel and Bullough visiting Hawaii by claiming, among other things, that Chow was sent to Hawaii to recruit “Kimo the busboy.” The comment was pulled and is no longer up (it is the post that “Real Househusband of OC” is responding to).

  196. momotaro January 27, 2009 8:25 pm

    Garret:
With all this talk about NCAA recruiting rules, there is a *huge* loophole for basketball that has been used every so often. A team recruiting a player can hire a coach or someone close to the player as a “2-for-1″ deal.

To get Michael Beasley, Kansas State hired his AAU coach as an assistant for $420,000 a year.

To get James Harden, Arizona State hired his high school coach as an assistant.

  197. momotaro January 27, 2009 8:27 pm

USC has made a habit of the 2-for-1 deal.

To get O.J. Mayo, they offered Davon Jefferson.

To get Demar DeRozan, they offered Lil’ Romeo.

  198. Garret January 27, 2009 8:28 pm

It sure paid well to own the Dolphins…and now I can see why he was in such a hurry to sell before Obama changes the capital gains tax.

I can back into this column by noting H. Wayne Huizenga was a fine Dolphins owner who spent money, tried to win, was liked by employees, hired people who were considered best for the job and, in this final season, finally reaped a public reward for his 15 years as owner. All of which I believe.

Or I can just note Huizenga banked an estimated $731 million by owning the team and stadium and that surely trumps his warm and fuzzy feeling from this final season. Or any pain of the Wannstedt Years.

Let’s examine how. First, there were his costs. Huizenga paid $168 million for the team and stadium in 1994 and assumed $100 million of debt on Joe Robbie Stadium. He bought 107 acres around the stadium for $11 million. He also said the recent upgrades around the stadium totaled $300 million. Total cost: $579 million.

Now, let’s add up the profits. First, there’s the biggie, the $1.1 billion sales price that Stephen M. Ross reportedly is paying for the team, stadium and land.

Next come the team and stadium profits. The two were intertwined in some cases. Club and suite seats, for instance, were set up to pay off the stadium’s debt. Two sources said the Dolphins made an estimated $10 million to $15 million annual profit, depending on varying factors such as players’ signing bonuses, facility upgrades or, say, the cost of Bill Parcells.

  199. Garret January 27, 2009 8:31 pm

    momotaro,

And all of that is legal according to NCAA rules. The players say something like they felt comfortable committing to the school because of the presence of their former coach…kind of like what a few of Tony Tuioti’s players mentioned when they talked about UH.

  200. J-Force January 27, 2009 8:47 pm

Garret, the thing about the school “creating” a position and paying the kids coach to “bring” him over. Kinda stinks. I’m so glad Diana is alright now, this could have had a horrible outcome.

I was attacked by a german shepherd when I was 13, had nightmares for a long time. I don’t like any pet that can actually kill me, period.

Somebody needs to explain to me this weird fascination with Pit Bulls. I’ve never heard a story, involving them, that wasn’t connected to a terrible outcome. They have them all over the south, usually for shady reasons.

So, why would anybody have them, especially in cages? Same with Mastiffs and other insane dogs. Why not have a Leopard as a pet? They’re not much more dangerous and can be tame (most of the time) also.

I may get flamed for this, but that’s my opinion.

  211. Garret January 27, 2009 9:27 pm

    NorthShoreFan,

The NCAA cannot prevent a school from hiring a coach at a high school or a summer league coach. It could be argued that it is a “coincidence” that the coach is close to a recruit (like Danny Manning’s father) and the recruit follows that coach to a school. I don’t see how a rule could be created to prevent this type of thing…

So, the schools with lots of money have a perfectly legal way to bend the rules in their favor. This is more common in basketball than football because a single player can make a huge difference in basketball.

When UH hired Tony Tuioti, some here immediately posted that they hoped that UH would be going after the players he coached at the high school he was at. Those players included Mike Wadsworth I believe, who I posted about today. UH did nothing wrong and I believe Tony Tuioti is doing an awesome job and would have been hired even if there were no recruits involved at his old school…but it was a nice bonus. I do not think that Wadsworth had any other D-IA offers, so that isn’t like Danny Manning or other recruits like the ones that momotaro mentioned in #196 and #197 above.

  219. Garret January 27, 2009 9:52 pm

Article about how schools will take lesser players in order to help their chances with a star recruit. I can think of examples of this in the past, several of them this year.

Only weeks earlier, Sarkisian and Huskies defensive coordinator Nick Holt had been part of a USC coaching staff counting on a commitment from Boyd to come and play defense for the Trojans. Having since been hired by Washington, they were now trying to entice Boyd to switch allegiances.

And so, huddled over a corner table at the Watts Coffee House one morning last week, the Huskies’ coaches met with Boyd in the presence of his high school coach, two teammates and a reporter.

Holt sat at the head of the table with junior receiver Deshawn Beck to his left, then Boyd, Sarkisian, Jordan Coach Elijah Asante opposite Holt, and, circling back around, the reporter and senior receiver Delvon Purvis — who, by the time Boyd officially signs an NCAA letter of intent one week from today, might become the most influential person at the meeting.

Purvis is a mid-range recruit — three stars out of a possible five by most experts — a player thought to have plenty of potential who is not high enough on any major college’s wish list to have yet attracted a scholarship offer.

By offering Purvis a scholarship and Boyd the chance to play quarterback, the Huskies have hopes of stealing the highly coveted Boyd away from USC.

Similar maneuvers are playing out across the country as coaches make a final push to secure commitments and sway loyalties in the run-up to national signing day Feb. 4. For example, UCLA has received commitments from a pair of mid-level recruits from Honolulu Punahou High, the home of All-American linebacker Manti Te’o, the nation’s top uncommitted prospect.

“You’ll see it a couple of times every year,” said Tom Lemming, a recruiting expert for CBS College Sports Television. “BCS-type schools will try to bring in a buddy or a teammate to land a great player. And a lot of times it does work.”

Sporting events (like the Super Bowl and boxing) might not come to California much in the future if this 10% tax is passed. The tax will apply to college games, so those of us going to the SJSU vs. UH game will be paying it this year. For comparison purposes, Vegas taxes boxing tickets 4% and if this law passes California would tax those tickets 18.5%!

“No one is paying attention to the family entertainment tax being proposed by the governor,” Leiweke said. “I’m shocked. The part of the economy in this state that is still working is tourism — people coming to places like Disneyland, Universal Studios. . . .

“The governor wants to add a 10% tax to all sports events to help cover the budget deficit. That’s like putting a brick wall around California. You think the NFL is going to take a 10% haircut to come here with a Super Bowl?

“This will impact Bruin games, the Trojans, all sports events in California, amusement parks,” Leiweke said. “We’re laying people off and now we’re going to kill the entertainment industry?”

Saturday’s boxing match at Staples, Leiweke noted, attracted more than 20,000 fans with 8.5% in taxes being collected — 5% to the state boxing commission, 3.5% to the city.

“You think we’re going to see boxing here again if the tax is 18.5%? It will go to Vegas,” Leiweke said, Las Vegas demanding 4% in taxes, Texas 3% and New York 3% with a $50,000 cap.

I mentioned that USC just got the top DE in the country to commit to them today. The DL coach they hired a couple of weeks ago just coincidentally is a long-time friend of that recruit’s father…

Kennard is ranked the eighth-best player in the nation by Rivals.com. New USC defensive line coach Jethro Franklin spent the past two weeks recruiting Kennard and is friends with his father.

Kennard’s commitment means the Trojans’ recruiting class could include the nation’s top quarterback (Matt Barkley), top defensive end and two of the top three linebackers (Vontaze Burfict, Manti Te’o).

Te’o, who is from Honolulu, has not committed yet, but his list is believed to be down to USC and UCLA.

What you said makes perfect sense-about the trolls spreading propaganda. But even so, their, or whoevers implantation of ill thoughts and ill will left unchallenged and unrefutted among the supporters of UCLA and/or supporters of righteousness that read that blog daily…was my contention all along. And I’ll never be shamed not to speak out and tell those that their biases are slanted.

If I weighed on their conciousness, then, that was my contention all along, too. And I guess there was some evidence of this happening.

    Thank you for your perspective.

    Dear Friends ~

I’m finally able to sit down and put my thoughts for today in perspective. Before I do, I just want to acknowledge my family of Tsaiko’s with my profound appreciation for all of your prayers and well wishes.

~ Praise be to Ke Akua for allowing my wife to walk away from what could have been tragic.

~ Mahalo to my Grandson Kimana for his quick ability to begin controlling the bleeding from all 3 wounds.

~ Thanks to the Paramedic’s, Kapolei Police and the security guards for their follow-up response to her emergency.

~ Prayers to the ER staff who really kicked it into high gear on arrival by starting the repair work to her puncture wounds. It’s hard to imagine that these people do this so routinely. and do it well.

~ Thanks to all my neighbors who came down to our house and helped by just being their for her.

~ …and a special thanks to my neighbors who immediately decided to put their beautiful animals down because they hurt “Aunty Diana.”

~ This single act of unselfish bravery is not uncommon for this tough as nails Moloka’i Woman. She had stepped forward on several occasions to help me tame my sports teams of youngsters as the ‘Team Aunty.’ She still declares that as her most death defying feat!

~ As Diana continues her painful recovery, she already has felt the outporing of love from her circle of friends here on the blog. The calls, emails and posts, have been overwhelming. It certainly has been uplifting to her, and she wanted me to convey her deepest Aloha to all of you. This is my feeble attempt to thank you all. Maybe if we can make it to the KK, I can add a personal touch to my thanks.

Thank you Mr. Tsai, for the phone call. I had to smile a bit when I hung up. Remember how you once said that it seems like every time we talk on the phone, it’s always over bad news? We certainly are keeping the streak going!

God Bless, and Good Night All.

What I learned about the celebration at Murphys next Wednesday, February 4, national signing day for football recruits.

    1.6-8 p.m
    2. Merchant Street will be closed, Block Party atmoshere, with booths set for food and beverage. Na Koa, Rainbow Boutique will have booths.
    3. Huge screen will be set up out side for presentation. With chairs for the viewers.
    4. No admission charge
    5. Coach Mack will go over each recruit. And show highlight film for each. He can only comment and show film of only the recruits that have signed.
6.BC of 1420 mentioned something that prior to the celebration at Murphys– BC and 1420 will have Coach Mack on the air for a pre-celebration show..

Sounds like it’s going to be fun. But check the hard copy for additional facts about the celebration to be on the safe side…as I hate to have mistaken anybody.

at some point you gotta look at the top brass in the women’s programs.
i totally understand how disappointed you’re feeling. when you look at all the women program coaches, and if you measure how their players feel about their experiences in the program, for sure you gotta conclude that
Mr. B has got to be shuffled off to the side if he plain won’t go. the women’s programs ass’t AD is rightfully responsible for this fiasco. I’m also disappointed and JD has to do something and take action that is in the best interests of UH. boy, plenty fires for JD to tend.

Huskies Fan made a great point yesterday.

    January 26th, 2009 at 5:24 pm
    I hope Coach Mac will…recruit the outer-islands…
    Maui kids playing ball…
Kai Maiava-UCLA (Baldwin) Shawn Tesoro-UNLV (Baldwin)
    Jojo Dickson-Idaho (Baldwin) Kaneiala Tuipolotu-Arizona,
Stanley Malamala-Arizona St. (Lahainaluna) Mana Rosa Oregon State (Baldwin) Jordan Puu Robinson Washington State (Kam-Maui/Baldwin)
Kamaloni Vainakolo Utah State (Maui High) Chase Nakamura greyshirt at Utah (Baldwin)

Baldwin has a kicker in CeeJay Santos who is only a sophomore and
already has kicked an MIL record 51 yard field goal. I was told everything he kicked this year was from 40 yards or more, people say this kid has a cannon for a leg. Baldwin also has an up coming freshman 6′4 215 who played varsity the last half of the season and in state playoff, some people say he is ahead of were Mana Rosa was as a sohpomore. I would love to see more Maui kids play at UH, Baba Rego is only kid from Maui on team.

I think UH coaches need to get more with Maui coaches and get on these kids early. I hear Miano talked to Mana Rosa early in recruiting then Mana didnt hear from UH and Oregon State kept on the kid, Cav and Banker did a good job on getting the kid. By the time UH came back to talk to Mana it was too late. Hope Coach Mac gets to outer-island and start meeting these coaches and get infromation on kids early.

What Huskies Fan means is that we outer island Tsaikos gotta do a better job at planting the seed on both sides of the recuiting, with the players, with the coaches.

    Maui is your department. 😀

  242. Ralph January 28, 2009 2:25 am

wow you’re 24 hrs late on Tonga……old news already..you must be hanging out on the dark side….you practicing for the KK with the croquis

  243. Ralph January 28, 2009 2:31 am

you outer islanders can be the Doris Sullivan of the neighbor isles and help the fb players produce a 10 minute video to submit to UH. if they want to go national tell them they need to contact PIAA directly and see what she needs to help them but give them the sad look so they stick to UH

  244. bighilofan2 January 28, 2009 2:36 am

For sure Mr. Torres is doing a great job being a role model for UH in the Kahuku area. Same sentiment for Inoke Funaki.

Like I said, I have a new found appreciation for what it means to be a Eagle Scout. The badges, what they mean. all 122. I am impressed with the Eagle Scouts, even more impressed with their leaders, the coaches. this one guy, Tom. He and his wife are team leaders for a group of LDS missionaries on this side of the island.

so when I see we’re recruiting high character type people who can play a mean brand of football, I’m thinking that we’re in good hands and our future is bright. an i no kea if we never get da creme of Maui yet, we going, mark my words.

    Joe Napeahi and Kainoa LaCount,

you know where Warrior Nation is. I am so glad you braddaz wanna be a part of us. Work hard bradda Warriors, step it up! Welcome to Warrior Nation! You never worked so hard to be taking a snooze!

    Go Warriors!

  245. bighilofan2 January 28, 2009 2:44 am

    Hiya Ralph.

I said the other day that there is this Keaau player,

    Tsume Mkisi Jackson. 6’2″ SUPER F A S T!!!. and Athletic.
saw him playing forward and going thru 2 players to get to the basket. they couldn’t stop him.

And all the time I was watching him and listening to parents rave about his favorite sport, track, i was thinking to myself, gotta tell Coach Mack about this kid Jackson. he is the real deal. honest.

I hope a coach reads this and makes an inquiry. There are two Keaau kids going to D1 this year. Daniel Iopa and Tsume Mkisi Jackson.
Daniel ran rings about Oline peeps this year but one look and you know Tsume would run rings around just about anybody. somebody going steal one real talent.

  246. bighilofan2 January 28, 2009 2:45 am

Daniel is a B student, and no mo basket weaving.

Tsume is A student. I’m wondering if he’s an Eagle Scout. 😀

  247. bighilofan2 January 28, 2009 3:13 am

We going have one super class of recruits.

Hope Coach goes to dat Johnson Speed and Quickness Performance Center near Dallas. costs $$$. learn how to push the envelope at the edges, the latest devices, training methods. even old dogs can learn new tricks, especially from the best. then coach can better evaluate and motivate our guyz and coaches.

  248. bighilofan2 January 28, 2009 3:30 am

I wonder if Coach Mack had recruits go through a full biomechanical functional movement screen and a hands on orthopedic evaluation from the UH sports physical therapy team before maken da schollie offaz 😀

i guess mo easy, jus look fo da Eagle Scout Badges. 😀

    hehe hehe

    Go Warriors.

  249. bighilofan2 January 28, 2009 3:50 am

anybody seen Kainoa LaCount working out?

  250. bighilofan2 January 28, 2009 3:51 am

i just know his season is not over, but just getting started.

  251. bighilofan2 January 28, 2009 3:57 am

Coach Mack’s best recruit, I feel, was Tony Tuioti. Getting people like Michael Wadsworth is such a blessing.

    Garrett,
thanks for that link to Wadsworth info.

Dang. I guess those dogs had no idea who they were attacking. If they knew it was Aunty they would have skulked back home.

  259. Garret January 28, 2009 6:54 am

    Kekoa,

Thank you for the update on Diana. I hope that she is feeling much better this morning.

  260. Garret January 28, 2009 6:56 am

It is pretty cool that the Warriors have the 24th best win percentage over the past 5 seasons. Only BSU has a better record of all the WAC teams.

    http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/20090127/NEWS01/901270351/-1/BACKISSUES

I read this article yesterday and thought that something needs to be done since these animals have attacked people over the years. Then yesterday’s incident happened. I am very thankful that Aunty is home recovering but it could have been worse!!

  262. A-House January 28, 2009 7:07 am

Happy bifday, A-Joe, enjoy this day and many, many more to come.

    Nice to be 28, eh?

  263. 702WarriorNation January 28, 2009 7:30 am

    Kekoa-
Great news on Diana’s recovery – what a special gem.
Plz take care of yourself too!

    RE: Mike Wadsworth
Any news/comments on why Rivals shows him as ‘soft verbal’?
Thought he was a ‘firm’ commit?
Offer from AZ, visited in Oct and UNR visit in Dec. but nil offer to date.
