Pro day: Clay, Woodard stand out

SAN DIEGO — Charles Clay safety from Hilo, had a breakout performance at UH’s pro day this morning on the San Diego State campus.

Clay ran the 40-yard dash in 4.44 seconds, the fastest time among the 11 former Rainbow Warriors.

He also had a broad jump of 9 feet, 11 inches, and vertical jump of 37 1/2 inches.

Tavita Woodard, who was competing as a defensive end/linebacker, completed the 40 in 4.65 seconds. He had a vertical jump of 38 1/2 inches.

According to my calculations, Sean Schroeder completed 95 percent of his passes.

  9. boolakanaka March 20, 2014 6:55 am

Aloha all. Looks like froggy weather in SD. As for Clark Evans old school hoodie, while the logo is old school, authentic old gear, would have been a standard green sweat shirt (no hood), with matching sweat pants that say UH Athletics. Standard gear for those cruising campus center, circa 1979-1985.

    ST,

Since the Pro Day is in SD, does UH pay for the participating players to fly up and back to Hawaii?
    Good luck Warriors!!

    Players pay their own way.

  23. Stephen Tsai March 20, 2014 9:51 am

Chow was there to support the players.
Brad Jones, the director of football operations, was UH’s liaison. San Diego State officials and NFL scouts ran the drills.

during the WVB season there was something about Jade’s facial expressions that I told my family that she will not return next year

I certainly thank her for all her contributions to UH WVB program and graduating with a degree in Chemistry – which is very difficult for a “regular” student – she did it while playing a sport.

Jade, all the best wishes from our family on your future!

  29. Manoa Mist March 20, 2014 10:57 am

    18 What a stupid question.

  30. HALEAKALA March 20, 2014 11:13 am

That was a legitimate question. If someone does wonder about something, then ask. No one should not be criticized for asking questions.

  31. Former UH Athlete March 20, 2014 11:37 am

Great day for Clay & Woodard. If they don’t get drafted, they definitely should be getting a shot to make a roster somewhere.

SS was accurate as predicted. He’s good when he isn’t getting hit 2 seconds after snap. I think he’ll get a chance somewhere. Probably goes undrafted. His brain combined with accuracy is going to be his ticket to making a roster.

  32. tommui March 20, 2014 12:20 pm

#30 Haleakala – well, when you know it all …

  33. PurpleMaple March 20, 2014 12:22 pm

  36. st. anthony trojan March 20, 2014 12:29 pm

124 teams have a pro day…@ about 10 athletics each mucho evaluating 4 them scouts huh….my guess is sum teams not send scouts to all of them….???

can see have one has 2 be exceptional 2 catch the eyes of sum scouts….so much competition…
    for so few slots…..

  37. Stephen Tsai March 20, 2014 12:54 pm

There were about 20 NFL scouts there.
    (No Jets, though. Sheesh.)
I think about a dozen time the 40. Then they all get together and figure on an “official” time.
UH does not have any of the times. So any other numbers but the ones we post are not official.
We’ll post the full list tomorrow.

  38. willieboy March 20, 2014 1:23 pm

wouldn’t it be something if Schroeder gets drafted earlier than colt brennan did in 2008?

Well, as of 9:57a here and 6:57a there.

  46. HawaiiMongoose March 20, 2014 3:13 pm

al… a MB transfer in or transfer out? The LV Review-Journal reported a few days ago that Kendall Smith (Quincy’s brother) is considering leaving UNLV. Sure would be an awesome pickup for UH.

  47. jimmy the lock March 20, 2014 3:36 pm

huh? The transfer subject is about volleyball no?

Since bench press was mentioned yesterday would be interesting to see the 225# reps per player.

  48. Go Bows March 20, 2014 3:48 pm

I heard Charles Clay trained for his proday at Tactical Strength. My son goes there and said they do the best training. Congrats Clay

  49. HawaiiMongoose March 20, 2014 5:05 pm

Okay, I get it, “mb” is middle blocker, not men’s basketball. The transfer is coming to play for the women’s volleyball team.

Oh well, I’m still hoping Gib is going after Kendall Smith. And of course that the “mb” is a good one!

wonder how many scouts show up for miami, oh and georgia states pro day. both teams went owen 12.

  51. Warrior Dave March 20, 2014 6:49 pm

    #29 Manoa Mist,

Sorry but everyone is not an expert on any and all things in life like you obvious are. It was an honest question but sorry it offended you by you having to read it and respond after ST so graciously did so without the hate. Do me a favor next time and just bypass all of my posts.

  52. Warrior Dave March 20, 2014 6:51 pm

Thank you Haleakala. You are class!

  53. Warrior Dave March 20, 2014 6:53 pm

    #32 Tommui,

You’ve been nothing but kind and classy to everyone on this blog. So happy to have great people like you here.

  54. Stephen Tsai March 20, 2014 7:18 pm

Now, now. Sometimes I think that the written word doesn’t accurately reflect the intent.
I think, in general, we’re all nice people.

  55. Stephen Tsai March 20, 2014 7:23 pm

I think Hawaii is at a disadvantage because its players have to travel to the mainland to participate in a pro day. The reality is that few scouts, if any, would travel to Hawaii to scout players. That’s why UH prospects are interviewed on road trips during the season.
San Diego State players, for instance, can have the comfort and familiarity of having pro day at its facilities. Hawaii players have to figure out the conditions, the turf, even where the rest rooms are located. One player kept asking about the time because he only bought a five-hour parking permit.
Price of living in paradise, I guess.

  56. Stephen Tsai March 20, 2014 7:24 pm

But it was cool to see a lot of the parents.
George Daily-Lyles came down just to cheer on his former teammates. Very classy. (Yes, we can all do the “Stay classy, San Diego” line now.)

  57. Old School Dave March 20, 2014 7:48 pm

New Texas coach implements a culture change and demands with his players. Two Longhorn players have been dismissed from the team, already.

  58. Fan March 20, 2014 7:56 pm

    54. Well ST it is kind of you to suggest that “we” are all nice people. This perspective also might be just the slightest, tiniest little smidgen naive. When hatred is articulated it is best to see it simply as it is. That way at least you can try to interact with it (or not) in a skillful way. Otherwise you keep inviting an interaction with those who are very limited in their capacity. I am not suggesting one doesn’t feel compassion and even extend kindness. But it is what it is and it is best to see it as so.

  59. al March 20, 2014 9:14 pm

    um…a middle blocker.
