Prep work

Head coach Norm Chow has made arrangements with two Los Angeles-area high schools to serve  as practice sites during road trips this season.

The plan calls for L.A. to serve as a hub city. On the week of a road game, the Warriors will practice on Thursday morning at UH, then depart for L.A., where they will stay overnight and then conduct a light practice at one of the prep schools on Friday morning. The Warriors then will either take charter buses or a charter flight to the city where the game will be played. The exception, of course, is the USC trip. The Warriors will stay put in L.A.

* * * * *

There still is no word on whether UH telecasts on the Mountain West’s cable affiliates — NBC Sports Network and CBS Sports Network — will be part of the pay-per-view package or will be blacked out in Hawaii.

One thing is certain: Chow likes the idea of UH playing a home games in the afternoon.

In particular, he wouldn’t mind if Boise State (whose game here kick offs at 2 p.m.) uses the sunnier sideline.

Don’t think the Broncos will protest. After all, for years the Broncos insisted that wearing their blue jerseys while playing on their blue turf was not confusing to opponents.

And this gives me a chance to post a picture of the turf sample that Boise State passed out at last year’s MWC Media Day:

blue

* * * * *

Word is that Su‘a Cravens, who is being recruited by everybody, still has UH among his considerations. He is the younger brother of UH defensive end Siaki Cravens.

* * * * *

With Siaki Cravens projected to miss significant time while recovering from a torn labrum, Tavita Woodard is expected stay at defensive end. Woodard practiced at tight end for more than three weeks, often with the first-team offense, before moving back to defensive end for the Warrior Bowl.

Today is the last day of classes for UH students.

Study up, people. Next week is finals.

establishing a base camp for da warriors is something new, but think it has merits. it is easier to get to other destinations from there. you can have unofficial visits from recruits. warriors with families and friends can see each other. da warriors will have a familiar place to practice.

  21. HawaiiMongoose May 4, 2012 7:57 am

ST, just wondering, why does your article on the addition of San Jose State and Utah State to the MWC say that “the proposed alliance between C-USA and MWC will no longer be pursued”?

Both the C-USA and MWC press releases this morning said the conferences are continuing to explore such an alliance.

“Conference USA and the Mountain West will continue to discuss a future affiliation that could begin as early as 2013. Both Conferences agreed that adding membership at this time was important and have carefully coordinated new membership plans. Additional expansion remains a possibility.”

    http://www.conferenceusa.com/genrel/050412aab.html

“Those next steps include continued consideration of a future association between Conference USA and the Mountain West. The two leagues have synchronized their new membership decisions and are still determining what form the alliance will take.”

    http://www.themwc.com/genrel/050412aag.html

Is there something you know that the conference commissioners aren’t telling?

  22. Ballpicker May 4, 2012 8:01 am

Same to everyone else, have a great Aloha Friday.

Can wait for the season to start.

  23. Stephen Tsai May 4, 2012 8:03 am

The conferences might be talking, but I was told that the proposal of that super conference that appeared to be imminent several months ago isn’t happening soon. (I’m talking about the proposal where there’s an East-West format with the UTEP in the West.)

I’m sure the sides can work out bowl agreements with each other, though.

  24. Stephen Tsai May 4, 2012 8:11 am

I think we need to change May Day to May Month.

To avoid scheduling conflicts, more May Day programs are not on May 1. Just heard of one school having its program on May 20.

he could create a huge backdraft to manoa.

  28. Jeff May 4, 2012 8:53 am

Anyone know if UH is going to be paying subsidies to Utah State and SJSU? This is looking more and more like the WAC with subsidies.

  29. d1shima May 4, 2012 9:03 am

    Previous HC’s hub was LV.

    Current HC’s hub is LA.

What happens if a future HC has ties to NYC?

….I’d bet the Blog Host wouldn’t mind!

  30. al May 4, 2012 9:14 am

hey didn’t the previous hc have two homes in lv??

  31. HawaiiMongoose May 4, 2012 9:17 am

ST, mahalo for the response. I see where it makes sense for the conferences to keep their distance from each other for awhile. That will reduce the ability of the departing schools to mount legal challenges to paying exit fees. I understand that for C-USA in particular, millions of dollars are owed by the departing schools.

  32. al May 4, 2012 9:18 am

jeff…i’m with you. we shouldn’t be paying travel subsidies to any mwc entries after we got in.

what i’d do in this case…

i agree with chow that 2 pm games would be good for our opponents to bask in the sun.

i agree that they(opponents) should occupy the mauka sidelines (more basking).

i’d sit down with under armour and come up with a special opponent uniform for home games that (you guessed it) match the field turf color at the aloha stadium.

and of course sell matching green tshirts to all fans…under armour brand of course.

  35. Keoniana May 4, 2012 10:05 am

Sua Cravens is a 4-5 star recruit..

  36. Stephen Tsai May 4, 2012 10:23 am

I think things are going to get complicated soon.

For instance, if there’s a four-team playoff, and the SEC probably wants to get two of the teams in, then that means only three of the six BCS conferences will be left out. And further extend that to the non-AQ conferences, and you’re talking about a lot of schools with no chance at not only a playoff spot, but a big-bowl payout.

I’m just wondering when a Big East school is going to figure out it’s a pain in the butt to travel to Boise for a league game.

  37. Couch potato May 4, 2012 10:28 am

may the 4th be with you.

  38. Stephen Tsai May 4, 2012 10:37 am

I didn’t mind Las Vegas as a hub.

Well, that was more like a week.

UH won’t be spending a week on the mainland anymore between road games.

  39. Warrior Dave May 4, 2012 10:39 am

    Stephen,

Didn’t BSU’s new conference demand that the blue turf be removed to a common green turf? Wasn’t sure if it was the MWC or Big East?

  40. polywarrior4life May 4, 2012 10:42 am

Top of the morning tuh-yah mates!

    L.A. here we come.

Su’a Craven, stay home an play for your aina.

I was at the girls hs state softball tourney this morning. Was great to see FB Justin Vele working on the grass field with a personal trainer from Tactical Strength an Conditioning.

On the turf, LB Kamalani Alo, CB Mike Edwards, and former warrior, Safety Richard Torres where doing field work out as well.

Great job warriors! Put in work to make it work. The guy next to you is still sleeping, lol.

  44. kev-1 May 4, 2012 12:00 pm

    Warrior Dave,

I think it was the MWC that told Boise they couldn’t wear all blue on their blue turf for home games. I don’t think they were told to remove the turf. Not sure about the BigEast though.

whitey softball games are 7 innings, but if by the bottom of the fifth if one team is leading the other by 8 runs (8-0 or 10-2) game over.

  101. Pomai May 4, 2012 5:44 pm

Na Wahine vs Utah is only on game tracker, no live stream audio or video, hard to believe that we could not work out some kind of deal with Utah to at least live stream the games back here.

  102. Ipu Man May 4, 2012 6:08 pm

Hmmmm…thanks for the tip, but did not need to refresh.

Now Lowe’s page comes up just fine. In fact, it let me vote

now before 7pm which is a bit unusual. Hmmmmm…

  103. whitey May 4, 2012 6:44 pm

ralph and pomai, thanks. brain stay stuck in another mode.

Just got this on my FB page from Joe Onosai.

Sending prayers and heartfelt condolences to the Satele family; just heard that Papa Satele has gone home to the Lord. He was a loving and honorable man, and has left a tremendous legacy behind in his children and grandchildren. You will always be with us Papa Satele! Manuia lou malaga!

Catch Report. Hooooo Some Tired, fished the Willamette hard today. Saw some osprey, bald eagles, fed wild geese by hand behind the boat while trolling at .8 mph, ate smoked spring king w creme cheeze and ritz and drank some awesome microbrews while we waited for the bite. Saw couple of the other boats land #20 lb chrome brights but we werent so fortunate. Fish finder was going off all day but kings d/n cooperate. Kind of frustrating. Ended the day by targeting, landing and releasing a handfuls of small sturgeon. At least got to fight fish and watch drag go. Thats why they call it fishing and not catching. Still an awesome day fishing w/ friends and enjoying pacific nw beauty. Got the invite for next year too…… Next time.

  106. Slugger May 4, 2012 7:12 pm

good night tsaikos. brain still stay lock, so calling it a night.

  109. Slugger May 4, 2012 7:17 pm

    3-prong,

You only fishing one day? I love king salmon…had a 25lb that got away decades ago. Someday I’ll go fishing again.

  110. Slugger May 4, 2012 7:19 pm

    Condolences to the Satele family.

  111. 3-Prong May 4, 2012 7:27 pm

    Whitey,

Fishermen know the feeling. Friends said that there was too much water with record rainfall they”ve been having. Expecting bite to go off within the next 3 weeks as water warms to 52 degees from today 48 and as water levels drop and clarity improves.

Going to get his recipe for the smoked salmon. Was more ono than the Pikes Market one I picked up a few months ago.

  112. 3-Prong May 4, 2012 7:52 pm

    Slugger,

Should try oregon. Fishing is literally in Downtown Portland. More economical than alaska but comparing both, no comparison because it is catching and not fishing in alaska. Cannot compare fresh king quality of both because “side bolo” today. At least you had um on!!!!!

  113. BleedGreen808 May 4, 2012 8:07 pm

UH baseball redefining “@55 whooping” tonight against NMSU. Aggies are falling apart on defense. They manage to turn a simple out to a hard one.

  114. BleedGreen808 May 4, 2012 8:09 pm

14-1 bot 3rd. Fourth pitching change this inning.

  115. jm2375 May 4, 2012 8:10 pm

Mercy! Too bad no more mercy rule in college baseball. 😀

  116. gmahoney May 4, 2012 8:13 pm

    JM-supposedly mercy at +10 after 7 innings.

  119. jm2375 May 4, 2012 8:41 pm

Guess there is a mercy rule!

How ironic is it that the Bows mercy rule NaMaSU at the Les?

    Congrats to the Bows!

  123. jm2375 (Infuse) May 4, 2012 9:15 pm

Oldtimer- the first was definitely my brain turning to mush, the second was ignorance of the rules of college baseball.

  134. oldtimer808 May 4, 2012 10:33 pm
