Mouton meets with Steelers, Patriots

At the official combine evaluations, Mouton was measured at 5 feet 9. His weight was 187.
He also bench pressed 225 pounds 18 times.
Mouton said he had a one-on-one interview with Pittsburgh Steeler head coach Mike Tomlin, and an individual interview with the New England Patriots. He has met with every NFL team.
Mouton runs the 40 tomorrow, then departs Indianapolis in the afternoon for Hawai‘i, where he will spend two weeks.

Jake Ingram is back in Hawai‘i after participating in the NFL Scouting Combine.
He was interviewed by several teams, competed in a four-hour workout and took part in several drills. He bench pressed 225 pounds 15 times, but admittedly ran a disappointing 40-yard sprint. Those drills matter little, although Ingram, the perfectionist, wants to be proficient in all areas.
His next goal is to gain “lean muscle mass.”
He weighed in at 232 at the combine, six pounds lighter than what he weighed when he left Hawai‘i. The long plane ride and hectic combine schedule likely led to the weight loss.
While Ingram was grateful for being invited to the combine, where he received positive reviews, he said: “It doesn’t mean you’ve made it. It’s another step in the process. You can never be satisfied. You can never be complacent. You have to keep working hard.”

If you’re interested in tickets for Thursday’s volleyball match between UH and Stanford, just say, “I’m interested,” and you’re automatically entered in the drawing. Winner will be announced during tomorrow’s WB video show. Tomorrow’s guest is Jim Donovan.

    Top 12!

  12. Garret February 23, 2009 8:49 am

I hope that Jake Ingram can gain weight by UH’s Pro Day! Colt’s weight at the combine hurt his draft status and I believe Ingram losing weight before the combine also hurt his draft status. Ingram has a limited time to gain the weight back and try to add some more…he doesn’t have to get huge but every pound will help the NFL feel more comfortable about drafting him.

  13. Garret February 23, 2009 8:51 am

Wisconsin is having budgetary problems like most schools and they are trying to cut athletic expenses…so, I’d guess future games in Aloha Stadium will be out until the economy is much, much better.

Brown presented the 2009-10 budget, which includes initiatives to hold salary increase requests, freeze operational expense budgets for teams, reduce department operational budgets and reduce spending on capital projects.

UW’s 23 sports teams were also asked to reduce spending, and Brown said 17 were successful. Six increased spending due to previous agreements such as the football team’s planned trip to Hawaii.

Athletic Director Barry Alvarez said the department has already made cuts in its operational budget to save over $1 million. Plans are also in the works to reduce the cost of capital projects by at least 50 percent.

“It’s real. It’s hitting people, and different schools are approaching it differently,” Alvarez said. “The face of college football and all of the things we see, a lot of things are going to be changed dramatically.”

i would think that ingram would not attend the pro day event since he had decent numbers and interviews. not unless he can run a 4.8/40 and gain 12 lbs.

those interested would bring him in where he would get weighed i am sure. that to me would be his biggest concern aside from his snap accuracy.

  26. Kekoa February 23, 2009 10:36 am

I would imagine Cheepono sets his blog alarm clock for a shot at the 1st place spot every day. It’s a matter of pride!

Surely the directorate of the WB can find some kind of meaningful prize for him. I would venture to say that the Advertizer’s 10% windfall pay cut account would more than cover any sort of recompense.

May I suggest a SF cruise to Maui? R/T air fares to LV are at all time lows….or, how about 2 season tickets to watch the UH Warriors? Wouldn’t that be a fair ‘good will’ gesture?

  31. cheepono February 23, 2009 10:54 am

    haha kekoa.

there’s several different ways of getting up-to-date immediate information regarding when ST first posts in the morning. twitter, rss feeds, etc. that go directly to your phone are some of the more common ways.

for me though, being the diligent state worker that i am… it’s almost always pure coincidence ST posts when i stroll in to the office. 😉

and winning the 2 tickets to the Pro Bowl was more than enough compensation for my loyalty to reading his blog FIRST of all things i do when i arrive at work.

  32. Howulikedemapples? February 23, 2009 11:06 am

    Ian Johnson, Boise State RB

Johnson came into Indianapolis known as a high-character prospect who’d do whatever was needed for a team. He finished the Combine as a hot overall prospect who cranked out stunningly strong numbers. Size wasn’t a question mark at a solid 5-11 and 212 pounds, but his 4.46 in the 40 had the scouts checking their watches. The 26 reps of 225 pounds would’ve been solid for a lineman, much less a running back.

  33. BIGWAVE96744 February 23, 2009 11:07 am

  44. SteveM February 23, 2009 12:11 pm

In Al’s support (hey, I’m serious this time…mostly) he is not the reason for gigi’s retreat. They had a Garfield-Odie* relationship on the blog since 2006 and I know Al (and Jason and DPK) are among the very few people ever invited to her place to watch UH PPV football on a 52″ Bravia. 🙂 Accepted or not, that is a measure of her regard for them.

Want the real story? You gotta buy ST’s book about the blog when it’s written… 😛

  45. Howulikedemapples? February 23, 2009 12:15 pm

    Sorry to burst your bubble…..Punchbowl

    CO did 23 and a 4.62 40 yard

Johnson did 26 and wowed the scouts with 4.46

Pound for pound CO might have the advantage but Johnson was haulin @ss at 212 pounds to Owens 183

  49. Rob25 February 23, 2009 1:15 pm

Hi DPK!! Hope that you are feeling better now.

And I was just thinking to myself…what do we Warrior fans really care about Ian Johnson? Just asking the question. Great guy or not, not much about him that I am interested in.

i heard that they were 86 on the oysters, i called in advance, thus, my refusal to attend. they could have sold a number of those, let’s see, me, kekoa, lizk, pride., homey, rob25, the list goes on.

  61. al ™ February 23, 2009 1:55 pm

    if healthy…..i’d say he runs a 4.38 and jumps a 39″ vertical.

  62. homey ℞ February 23, 2009 2:02 pm

al – if anything they could have gone across the street to Times and bought a couple of jars of oysters and at least made some deep fried ones.

Looks like we missed out on some action.

If Mouton isn’t healthy, what numbers do you think he’ll post?

  63. al ™ February 23, 2009 2:11 pm

hmmm….then he shouldn’t run if he is not 100% and wait until pro day.

tough decisions. i’ll bet he could still run a 4.5 and leap 34″ with a hammy. but, then again he showed extraordinary recuperative healing abilities during his two years here.

  64. homey ℞ February 23, 2009 2:22 pm

Speaking about recuperative healing abilities, what info does your birdie have on Blaze Soares? Good to go? Training in the sand again?

Good weight and reps for Mouton!

  66. Pride. February 23, 2009 2:24 pm

I vote homey to win the bench press portion of the Tsaiko combine. He’ll probably bench 225 about 28 times.

  67. Pride. February 23, 2009 2:26 pm

I think I would be competitive in the tsaiko throw, I think that I can throw Homey about 28 feet.

  68. Pride. February 23, 2009 2:28 pm

18 reps on the bench at 187 pounds is very, very good.

  69. al ™ February 23, 2009 2:37 pm

wow….pride. 28 feet is quite an accomplishment.
i wonder what you could do with, um, say midori7 or joje? 45 feet at least.

  70. Pride. February 23, 2009 2:39 pm

How far could I throw DPK?

  71. al ™ February 23, 2009 2:39 pm

wow….187 with those skinny legs. that is a really great weight for him providing he can still carry it well.

  72. homey ℞ February 23, 2009 2:42 pm

Pride. – PFFFFFFTTTTTT! I’m gonna come into the Tsaiko combine at 175 lbs., same weight as jm####. 225 @ 28 reps is Mr. A-House territory. I’d struggle just to do 28 push-ups.

I’d gladly donate myself to see if you can toss me 28 feet. Been a while since I’ve been tossed. Oops, nevermind, I was tossed out of bed last night…

  73. Pride. February 23, 2009 2:43 pm

If mouton can run a good 40, then he may end up being a first day guy. Those scouts just love fast guys.

  74. al ™ February 23, 2009 2:46 pm

DPK would give me the guillotine choke hold. Knowledge would win out over brawn.

  97. Jason February 23, 2009 4:39 pm

Well, NFL.com is reporting Veikune ran a 4.87. I know I heard the 4.75 time as well — you always have to take reported times with some grains of salt, because they always differ with some serious variance. Either way, he was one of the top 10 defensive linemen in 40 time, bench press, and the 3-cone drill. That is the performance that I really wanted to see from him to solidify his chances. If he ran a consenus 4.75, then I’d be really happy, cause that would help his chances with the 3-4 teams who are looking at him as an OLB.

And yeah, about Ingram, that 40 time was pretty disappointing. I was hoping he’d run around a 4.8. His stock probably didn’t take too much of a hit, but combined with where his weight is at now, teams are going to start questioning a little bit. I still think he’s the top long snapper off the board, though.

And now it’s time for Mouton to shine. He really needs good measurables, he needs to make himself stand out. I’m hoping he’ll do really well.

    Hi Momo.

    Good Luck!

…..speaking of Vegas (and rubbah slippahs).

Maybe good news for Rob25 and others who enjoy Station Casino’s high-end properties like Red Rock and Green Valley Ranch.

Boyd yesterday offered about $950 million to buy all of the Station Casino assets

Maybe can walk around in those posh places with shorts and slippahs pretty soon!

The Boyd’s offer does not include all of Stations Casino’s properties.
The offer excludes those with very high debts.

Station Casinos would retain ownership of the Red Rock Resort, Palace Station, Boulder Station, Sunset Station and 356 acres of undeveloped land the company controls in the Las Vegas Valley. Those four casinos have almost $2.5 billion in debt tied to them, according to a Station Casinos’ filing with the SEC last August.

Ryan Mouton benching 225 pounds 18 times is excellent. His 40 time is even more important for his NFL draft rating.

The 2 highest rated offensive tackles (Eugene Monroe and Michael Oher) are expected to be drafted in the top 12 picks or so in the draft and both weigh 309 pounds while Mouton weighs 187…but Monroe only benched it 23 times and Oher only benched it 21 times!

So, Mouton almost matched the bench press reps of one of the top OL in the draft!

  134. Garret February 23, 2009 8:14 pm

Unfortunately for Mouton, a lot of the CBs that he’s being compared with did an amazing job at the Combine, beating his 18 reps. In fact, a bunch of athletes benched 225 at least 22 times…including a kicker!

Judging by position, rather than weight, the top-rated tackles were out-benched by a dozen running backs, three wide receivers, nine tight ends, eight cornerbacks, four safeties and, yes, one kicker, ex-USC Trojan David Buehler, who weighed in at 225 pounds and managed 25 reps.

I’ve been calling for years for a student fee for UH Athletics, which would include free admission to games…that would hopefully encourage student attendance, as some people go to games because they are “free” for them. At least that was the case at Texas, and I’ve read lots of articles that indicate students attend the games more if they do not have to pay out any additional money to attend because they have already paid a fee.

Trouble is, adding a fee right now is tough. Too bad HF wasn’t proactive about this…

Without a way to track and inspect the multitude of locations that have nuclear waste, they are worried that the containers with nuclear waste will accidentally or on purpose show up on eBay, flea markets, or be sent to landfills or metal recycling plants. Republicans are pushing a bill to force all internet providers and WiFi access point providers (even coffee shops and home users!) to keep records about user’s web surfing for two years! Every home with a WiFi access point, even those that have password protection? Every hotel? How are they going to make that feasible for users that barely can install plug-and-play APs? Some Democrats tried this 3 years ago, so this bill unfortunately has support from elements of both parties…the idea might be nice in theory, but I think that in practice it would raise costs significantly and possibly end free WiFi from coffee shops and other locations and turn millions of citizens with WiFi APs into criminals.

Although it seems like we can say, shame on those two tackles for appearing to be weak compared to a few other athletes that were tested. Some of those tackles have a trait which may be positive on the one hand but a disadvantage on the other. That is arm length, and wingspan. A long wingspan may be great when trying to hold off a defender, but may put you at a disadvantage when trying to go heavy on the bench press. We need to take that into consideration.

When you get hit by a 300 pound man running a 5.0 flat 40, it’s not going to matter how much he can bench. It’ll hurt.

  148. Jason February 23, 2009 9:13 pm

Pride hit it on the head. As long as they can bench press enough, I don’t care if the offensive linemen hit 40 or 50. I’ll take 21 reps and long arms with quick feet any day.

Okay, back to studying for my test. I mean, time to start studying for my test. Which is in a little less than 12 hours. 😀

I have never been on a Mariner-size ship, which is 50% wider than most that fit in the Panama Canal. This one is 3 football fields long (including end zones) and very close in WIDTH. Good one to go on.

The one we will be on is much smaller — barely 3 fields long without end zones 🙂

  154. Garret February 23, 2009 9:57 pm

    Pride,

I agree with what you said, of course. However, those tackles will be compared with others at the combine at their position that did much better. They still will be drafted high, but they will have extra scrutiny right now.

The whole point of this process for NFL scouts is to try to poke holes and tear down each potential draft pick. They look for flaws and knock down anyone who has them. Then, in the last week or so they build players back up. Unfortunately for Colt, they kept poking at some issues (weight, system, etc.) and he was recovering from surgery before the draft and couldn’t meet with teams or show them that he was healthy.

  155. al ™ February 23, 2009 9:59 pm

it was a mistake. i told princess l. that if she needed someone to lug around her camera while at the uh pro day that i would do it. rob25 thought that i was volunteering your services.

  156. Garret February 23, 2009 10:00 pm

The other thing to point out is that I’m really hoping that Mouton runs a fast time, as there were a lot of other CBs at the combine that benched more than him–at least a dozen, he’s probably in the midpoint or below on the bench press at his position. They have height and the bench press on their side…but Mouton will hopefully have the edge in speed.

Personally, I think that the bench press is overrated for CBs. However, scouts use everything to downgrade draft picks and Mouton needs a good 40 time to sway them.

  157. Garret February 23, 2009 10:01 pm

Reading the NFL combine results today one analyst pointed out that for interior linemen explosives is key. Taking the total of the reps in the bench press, vertical jump and standing broad jump– a number near 70 is very good.

    For example:

Veikune had 35 reps in the bench press and adding to what he did in the vertical and broad jump totals above 70 then that would be very good. Finding results of how he did in the other events was hard to find as I post. Top ten results at his position the NFL Combine. com allows me to see, other than the top ten results I can’t see (they wanted me to sign up and pay…ha, ha..no). It just like the site (or NFL is so proprietary over the results…but it’s easy to see why they limit all the results as they want people to subscribe and pay to see all the results). The site says he did a high 4.8 40 and 7.20 L-Drill, which are not eye popping numbers. Other DE last year for example did a lot lower in the 40 and L-Drill.

    This is an excellent site

    http://www.nfldraftscout.com/searchcollege.php?draftyear=2008&colabbr=A

This site allows you to keep track of your favorite college football team’s NFL prospects dating back to 1999. It gives data of personal info–along with combine results.

As a comparison look at the numbers Travis Laboy put up in the 2005 combine

    bench-225×35
    vertical-35.5
    broad jump-10′ 6”
    total-81

This is huge-add on a 4.69 40 time and a 7.01 3 cone drill and it’s easy to see that these numbers caught the eyes of the NFL scouts.

Looking at Issac Sopanga 42 reps and Wayne Hunters 37 reps in the bench press and Travis and Veikunes numbers in bench press (even Chads 23 is impressive) tells me that the boys are really dedicating themselves in the weight room. A lot of credit may be due to the ones overlooking the strength and conditioning.

On the local high school scene I was looking at a high school combine results from last summer (PIAA combine) and there was this one 10th grader from Punahou that caught my eye. Listed as a LB/DB his numbers… height, weight, 40 time, vertical, broad jump
are probably catching some recruiter’s eye.

    transferred from the “prep talk”

    on another note…..

don’t look now, but, here come the kaimuki bulldogs (again!).
its the boys basketball playoffs and once again the dogs are in the house. this is becoming habit forming.

back in the 90’s ray fujino led the bulldogs in to the playoffs and the states. he virtually willed them from obscurity.

and now comes kelly grant another great one by the time he retires. folks don’t realize the challenge it is to bring out the best in these kids from the kaimuki boundaries. they have to not only teach them the game, but also how to become good students and citizens.

my hats off to fujino and now grant. i hope soon that these two great men are recognized not only by their peers but by this entire state.

    …nuff said.

    Go Warriors!!!

  181. Kekoa February 24, 2009 5:26 am

Good Morning Tsaiko Ohana!…It’s officially Mardi Gras season I guess.

Happy Rat Tuesday Al from the manager of Camillia!

He wants a head count for the next cc. Needs to know how many mountain rats to order.

He heard commodity prices on the farm bred mountain rats are much higher than the ‘other’ white meat. I think he may slip some city rats in on us. I’ll call on our resident food expert out in Foster Village for a ruling.

  182. Kekoa February 24, 2009 5:32 am

Speaking of farm bred. Who thought up the name *Combine?*

Really makes me think of our kids as livestock commodities up for bid. Closer to a meat market mentality. Why not just stick with calling it what it is…NFL Tryouts!…there, now was that hard?

  183. Kekoa February 24, 2009 5:45 am

Happy Trails to Las Vegas and his betrothed as they journey back to the land of Oz today.

Thanks for the warm memories! I have to admit, as a rookie listener to your style of singing, I was favorably impressed. It took me way beyond “Row-row-row your boat” in 4 part harmony, that’s for sure!

  184. Kekoa February 24, 2009 5:48 am

Ok my CBOT market trades are locked in, time to go back to bed. bbl…

    ty for the link.

i don’t know if it’s just me, but i see most of the boys doing full bench pressess, like veikune. Up and down arms fully extended . To me this seems would be the honest type of bench press, and harder to do. I saw others, like rey Maualuga do their bench presses and it seems like there’s are easier to do because when they bring the weights up and down their arms aren’t fully extended. I wish a weight coach seeing this clip would comment.

    Good Morning All!

Interesting article regarding everybody’s favorite UH coach:

Perhaps the truth will set us free…

  197. Garret February 24, 2009 8:16 am

    Haleakala,

SteveM will be happy to add you to our neighbor island Tsaiko list!

My Dad is from Kula so we stayed with his Mom every summer and winter vacation. Such a beautiful place and I have friends and relatives all over Maui, including Wailuku.

  198. Garret February 24, 2009 8:18 am

UH plays Washington State early in the season, so could be important that their expected starting QB will miss Spring Practice due to injury. Now that QB is suspended for underage drinking. Being found drunk at the police station?

Washington State quarterback Marshall Lobbestael has been suspended from the team following his arrest Saturday for minor in possession of alcohol, according to a report.

Lobbestael, 19, who was slated to miss spring practices while rehabilitating a knee injury, was arrested after Pullman (Wash.) police said they found him passed out in a pickup truck at the police station, according to KXLY in Spokane.

He was expected to be 100 percent in the fall and was generally considered the front-runner to earn the starting nod at quarterback.

  201. Garret February 24, 2009 8:25 am

The MWC is *not* helping the other non-BCS conferences, probably because they want to join the BCS! This is a problem because there are already more teams in the BCS conferences than the non-BCS conference teams in D-IA…so, if the MWC supports the BCS then the BCS has a significant majority of votes in D-IA.

One thing that the article doesn’t mention is that the MWC is the only D-IA conference that did not sign the new BCS contract that runs through 2014. They are really setting themselves up to put pressure on the BCS to add them!

As much as UH fans like to complain about the BCS, it should be noted that Karl Benson and the WAC *signed* the BCS contract that runs through 2014. This apparently happened a few months ago.

Since Craig Thompson’s teleconference on Friday, the rift between the Mountain West and the other non-automatic qualifying conferences is starting to become public.

Whether that rift was there before Thompson marched on Washington with his plan for a better BCS — one that includes the Mountain West — I’m not sure, but it’s there now and commissioners of the other non-AQ conferences are no longer hiding their opinions.

Both Sun Belt commissioner Wright Waters and WAC commissioner Karl Benson have said they’re either not in favor of the seventh automatic qualifying conference or that the Mountain West has not done enough to warrant all the attention. Outgoing Mid-American Conference commissioner Rick Chryst said he’s not in favor of government intervention in college football.

  202. Garret February 24, 2009 8:27 am

The WAC’s position is that the BCS is fine the way it is I guess (they signed the BCS deal), and that the MWC shouldn’t be added as a BCS conference. The WAC is *not* arguing that it should be added as a BCS conference if the MWC is added (or in place of the MWC)…

One could argue that both the Mountain West and the rest of the non-AQ schools are being selfish. The Mountain West because it doesn’t want to bring the rest of the non-automatic qualifying schools in on the deal, and the other four conferences appear that way because they don’t want the Mountain West diminishing their opportunities.

  203. Garret February 24, 2009 8:28 am

Of course BSU supports the BCS…they want to join the MWC in the BCS.

The other four conferences don’t want to seem ungrateful for the BCS opportunities they have. Even Boise State coach Chris Petersen, who was shut out of a BCS bowl this year despite meeting the qualifying provisions, defended the BCS system because it got his team in a BCS bowl in 2006.

  204. Garret February 24, 2009 8:29 am

I guess the article did mention that the MWC didn’t agree to the new BCS agreement. Since the WAC Presidents did agree, I guess Pres. McClain is okay with the BCS like it is right now.

But the theory that consistency gets a conference into the BCS is lost on the nine Mountain West presidents, who strongly suggested that Thompson present the conference’s case to Washington. These are also the same presidents that haven’t agreed to sign the BCS agreement with ESPN. The Mountain West is the only conference that hasn’t signed.

roysan16 – I’m not a bench press expert but it looks like bouncing that bar off of your chest is also an advantage. (J)J would know.

Also, it seems that stopping the bar 1 inch before your chest then pushing it back up makes benching harder to do. Again, (J)J would know…or Jason.
