Playing for Chansen

The Warriors have extended an honorary membership to Chansen Ondayog, an 11-year-old Kalakaua Middle School student who was struck by a commercial truck while riding his bicycle to Pop Warner practice two weeks ago.

Head coach Nick Rolovich visited Chansen at The Queen’s Medical Center. Rolovich has invited Chansen to meet with the Warriors when he is able to attend a practice.

* * * * *

Rolovich accepted responsibility for the lack of “juice” at Thursday’s practice following a four-day break. Practice was crisper this morning.

* * * * *

Dru Brown, Ikaika Woolsey, Aaron Zwahlen and Cole McDonald took quarterbacks reps today.

Rolovich still is not ready to announce a starter for the Oct. 1 game against Nevada.

Well, sort of. After conducting an interview with his favorite newspaper reporter, Rolovich said: “Oh, you turned off your recorder? I was going to tell you who’s starting.” He then grinned and walked away.

* * * * *

> Defensive end Meffy Koloamatangi, who did not play against Arizona, was back at practice, creating havoc on the perimeter.

> Dejaun Butler has taken reps as a safety with the No. 1 defense.

> Another practice, another spectacular catch by Kalakaua Timoteo III. This time it was a leaping one-handed grab.

    Great for Coach Rolovich.

I would expect to see Kala Timoteo get alot more playing time and maybe even starting sometime during the season

  4. bowwar September 23, 2016 10:40 am

Aside from QB, we need more productivity from our outside receivers besides Kemp. Barker has been “none existent” for 3 games and I think we need to field other candidates. Timoteo looks promising, but we also need our speed guys on the outside to keep the defense honest. Bernard and Ewaliko need to stretch field to open the underneath routes by the slots.

    Sweet. Rolo does it right.

  6. Shoko September 23, 2016 10:57 am

Opening up the QB competition between Dru Brown, Ikaika Woolsey, Aaron Zwahlen and Cole McDonald , or just between Woolsey and Brown?

  7. cocobean September 23, 2016 10:59 am

If Rolo does indeed plan to start a new QB I think he should let the team know by the end of Monday’s practice. I thinks it’s better to let them know early on rather than to have them speculate among themselves. Rolo knows that’s the 64K question on the minds of people who follow the program. To me it holds true for the players too. They must be wondering themselves if a change at QB is going to be made. It’s alright for him to withhold that information from the public but I think the team deserves to know.

Good to hear that Meffy is back.

  9. Former UH Athlete September 23, 2016 11:43 am

If IW is starting Oct. 1, I will seriously begin questioning his decision making process as a head coach.

Besides that, I hope Ursua gets more targets. He has the potential to be a solid slot WR. From what I can tell on the limit amount of camera time he’s on screen (WR’s are often outside the camera angle), he has good short area quickness, which is something Devone Bess had.

  10. turfwar September 23, 2016 11:51 am

I think the team knows in their heart who is going to start. Unless Dru is just a bad practice player he has shown the ability to lead the team to scores. It may not always be according to the offensive play called but he’s got something going on. Maybe it’s the “juice”. Meffy was missed and I wouldn’t be surprised if it shows on his return to the field next Saturday.

  11. Ipu Man September 23, 2016 12:19 pm

A pr win for Rolo is to start both Dru and Ikaika.
One can block for the other, and vice versa 🙂

  12. H-Man September 23, 2016 12:20 pm

I think the players will know who the starting QB will be early next week simply because that QB will be taking most of the 1st team reps. But Rolo will not announce his starter until next Friday at the earliest. He said on the “Call the Coach Show” that he will do whatever he can to aggravate Nevada HC Brian Polian. Don’t tell the opponent anything that may help them prepare for the Warriors. It’s gamesmanship. On Cole McDonald, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that he has been moved up into the rotation because Cole’s numbers have improved rather significantly every year since his sophomore year in high school (see http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/cole-mcdonald/UpyHLfTvEeKZ5AAmVebBJg/gendersport/football-stats.htm). Not saying he’s going to be the starter, but his scout team performance apparently warrants another look.

  13. A-House September 23, 2016 1:03 pm

Coach Rolo truly has the heart of a Hawaii born person — well, not all of us are “warm at heart” to make others feel comfortable and accepted!!!

let the bells ring out that UH has a coach who cares about “people”!

  14. azwarrior22 September 23, 2016 1:05 pm

IW is still starting, just not at QB…he’s the placeholder for point afters and field goals.

  15. azwarrior22 September 23, 2016 1:07 pm

Here’s the mood at the UA game for Hawaii fans last Saturday…

    First half: somber and resigned.

    Second half: exciting and re-vitalized.

A tale of two halves…future is NOW.

  16. Inyoface September 23, 2016 2:05 pm

Nevada is a must-win game. We can do it if Dru plays the whole game but he’ll need to secure the ball.

  17. Maddog50 September 23, 2016 2:18 pm

Not a bit surprised at Coach Rolovich taking responsibility for light practice. He knows how to play the deal. Not one bit concerned. Warriors gonna give a great effort in a win against Wolfpack

  18. Warrior Dave September 23, 2016 2:19 pm

Rolo may not announce who the starting QB is till next Friday. But the team will know who’s the starter well before then.

  19. Warrior Dave September 23, 2016 2:28 pm

I don’t like the two QB system. when Ikaika was starting, the hole was so big by halftime. Whoever starts needs the time to get in a groove. Ikaika has had 4 chances to find his groove.

  20. Ohana Hawaii September 23, 2016 3:56 pm

It’s shows how much love he has with his community. Thank You! Coach Rolovich for a the kids in Hawaii that wants to become college football player. But anyway? Rolovich should start his quarterbacks other by the order. Dru Brown, Aaron Zwalhen, Cole McDonald and then Woolsey. But if Rolovich decided to start Woolsey. It’s really seriously showing that he wants to finish Woolsey football career at Hawaii as a high notes!. If that happens? It’s will be another losing season for the University of Hawaii football program! Hawaii will finish at 1- 9 with Woolsey at quarterback! But with Brown and the other quarterbacks! They’re might have a better finishing!. Because Woolsey is still playing his way of football . When former head coach Norm Chow was at Hawaii. That made Chow to get fired the wrong decision at quarterback with Woolsey!. Because the quarterbacks that Chow use to coach! They were great division one quarterbacks and even in the NFL!. Woolsey is not her is a division two or a JCC quarterback!. Because he still his a division two mind decisions on his playing field!. Woolsey his a very poor decision in the pass three games and even one win too. Because Middle Tennessee Martin wasn’t like the other three teams. Glad it was them to get they’re first win!. If they had scheduled with North Dakota State, Missouri State or Youngtown it will be other lost. Because a lot’s of large universities are afraid of the up come! Because their aren’t a push over teams to be pushed around. Because they had beaten top 25 teams and other large conferences too!. Really University of Hawaii much change their Quarterback!

  21. NorthShoreFan September 23, 2016 4:33 pm

    Guud Afternoon Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!

The qb who executes the game plan best, starts.
Unleash Timoteo, Ursua, Collie, Kemp, Lakalaka, St. Juste, Harris, Kaiwi etal.

Let all know…all positons up for grabs. Don’t bring it, have a seat and watch your brother do it.

  22. cocobean September 23, 2016 4:40 pm

#12. #18. I hope he officially lets the team know early and not let them deduce it from who is taking the most practice snap. I’ve said it before that the coach’s handbook says for gamesmanship purposes don’t tip you hand early when making a switch at QB. But in this case I think it’s better for the replacement to know early to build his confidence. Let him and the team practice knowing he’s the starter. All this is moot if Ikaika starts.

  23. 808 September 23, 2016 5:51 pm

I hope Dru Brown starts against Nevada.

First conference game, new start, new starter at QB.

Forget all that’s happened in the last 4 years and start building on the foundation to being great again.

That sounds like a nice start back to being a great football team again.

  24. burro sabio September 23, 2016 8:04 pm

Actions speak louder than words. The team doesn’t have to be told who the QB is, they will know.

IMHO everyone is conditioned to question Rolo’s judgement because they had to endure 4 years of Chow’s judgement. If JJ was coach and said that Woolsey is the best QB, fewer people would question him.

  25. torps20022 September 23, 2016 10:07 pm

I hope all who have opinions about qb position and who should start are people who have their okoles in the seats at the stadium. We need the fan support out there making noise, not booing either. allot of weekend qb’s, pay up and be at the stadium. Again I say, there is so much to worry about this team, qb is the least of their worries. Scoring is on both sides of the ball; offense and defense. we need turnovers….go warriors!

  26. torps20022 September 23, 2016 10:12 pm

yes I say the best should start, but until DB starts a game from the start when it is 0-0, I really don’t know who is best. Bring him in when the real pressure is on and the first string opposing team is in and applying the pressure. I believe we need the wins now anyway we can get with IW OR DB, OR ANY OTHER…..

  27. Ohana Hawaii September 24, 2016 2:52 am

Boy!. It’s seems that you never watch Woolsey play for the pass four years!. Because a lot’s of quarterbacks were or is on their fifth and sixth year at the University program. Are doing well or great!. But not Woolsey!. If June Jone where here. He might put him at safety or a defensive back. Because Woolsey is not three times better then Ching or five times better then Brennan were!. And remember this University of Hawaii football don’t have Cal Lee on their coaching staff! That’s the big difference! Rolovich should give Brown more time experience in college level. Even with Aaron Zwalhen and Cole McDonald!. Because they have the most dangerous passing attack arm! But still young at quarterback. Woolsey a fifth year senior at quarterback he is not showing anything at all!. Like, I’ve say even the people up here in the state. If they keep him at quarterback expect a 1-9 season!. And a lot’s of players going to leave the program. And also of a lot’s of verbal commitments will turn down Hawaii and go somewhere else to play!

  28. Ohana Hawaii September 24, 2016 3:13 am

Hey! I don’t like to put the team. But, I hate to see them lost every game and every year too!. Because a lot’s of five, four and three stars high school players. Some looks at the teams football schedule. The coaching staff, can they’re playing right away and the teammates. But if you were a wide receiver you be looking at the QB! If QB plays like division three or a two and playing in a division one and lost every game from the pass four years. He would never come here!. Picture it in your mind? You are a five stars player and the University of Hawaii recruited you. The first thing in your mind is it’s a Paradise!. But looking at it? Go to a collage were their are losing every year and maybe winning one game in the pass five years.

  29. Maddog50 September 24, 2016 6:11 am

Great camera view of Purdue/Nev up top see everything. No names on Wolfpack jerseys. Bakers inside 5 with first poss.

  30. Akamai Okole September 24, 2016 6:21 am

    Great Morning All!

Speedy recovery to Chansen…hope you are back on the field soon!

  31. Willie September 24, 2016 7:54 am

#9, agree totally, however a little softer opinion as I would wonder instead of question. Said this so many times before, take a look at the body of work over 3 and 1/4 years for Woosley. Awful stats, underperforming in areas that a QB of quality should excel which are completion %, a good indication of accuracy and Interception/TD ratio, an indication of decision making. How is this QB going to suddenly have a complete 180 degree turnaround with only 2 weeks of practice? Does Rolo and Stutzman know that a miracle will bust out suddenly against the Wolfpack? He’s ranked right now 109 out of 125 college QBs right now, maybe now where to go but up???
