Executive assistant Lacey Lavarias has told co-workers she is leaving the program to study for the Hawaii bar exam.
Lavarias is an Iolani School graduate who played volleyball at Utah. She earned her juris doctorate from UH”s Richardson School of Law in 2012.
She worked long hours, with enthusiasm and diligence, and will be missed.
morning gang!
knee!
Thanks for the times. Are all practices on the upper Grass field?
Good Morning Folks!
uncanny!!! spring ball is here and it will be the start of something new. good morning tsaikos
Good morning everyone. Man this day couldn’t have come any slower for me. Im totally ready to see them get it going.
Is there any word on who is going to take the first snap yet?
Hope they don’t get too wet…
Is it raining today?
Good Morning Gangeez! 😉
Top Ten?
Good luck to Lacey.
Aloha all! Imua Lacey!
Morning! Spring is in the air, along with footballs and the sounds of whistles, coaches yelling, and lots of enthusiasm working toward a hopefully rebound season!
oh, and hello everyone. long time no see!
mahalo Lacey and best on your bar exam.
Huh, I don’t see any time allotted on the schedule for clubs/disco???
Light drizzle around 6am but later huge down pour—at least around the Ala Wai.
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
Good luck Lacey!
Good morning Tsaikos!
Best wishes to Ms. Lavarias.
GO WARRIORS!
GO WAHINE!
I heard there was conditioning test done yesterday, how did our payers look?
#15 – I think the club/disco schedules were from your days. I’m guessing that with 7:15 AM practice times, the focus is elsewhere… I could be wrong, but that’s my guess!
GO WARRIORS!!!
Kuhio Grill in the morning/with ticket
Blue Goose in the evening with a Pitcher
Good morning DPK!
I think our esteem Yalelie in #15 was referring to Ms Lavarias passing the bar!
I’ll drink to that!
(unfortunately, it has to be ginger ale/sprite).
Chow really hate Dave Reardon that much??? Don’t think a HC should take things too personal in this line of work..
#23…what happened?
24. Apparently Chow was pissed that Reardon was at practice, and was going to cancel all interviews with media if he didn’t leave. I’m sure ST would have more details…
And I understand you’re not going to like everyone…. but the day you decide to be a HC, you have to learn to not take things too personal and deal with the good and bad reporting that comes with the territory… If the football team had better results, it would be a lot easier to write positive articles…
In better news.. Ben Dew landed at Houston…. Hope he gets a chance to start..
Good morning everyone!
Good luck to Lacey Lavarias, and mahalo for your service.
Jeezy, you what they say, “its not personal, until its personal”.
Breaking news, the USC QB picks the Warriors!
April Fools!
I think this may stem from the article Reardon wrote where he took Norm’s “getting too old for this” quote out of context, which started a firestorm in this blog and message boards
You’re a 60+ year-old who has spent decades in football and that’s how you behave? You’re a coach. Set an example for the kids and follow through with your obligations. Let the media do its job. They’re not there to advocate for you or support you. It’s foolish to think otherwise.
Chow should know better and get over it. The team has more important things to worry about than a columnist spouting his opinions. Just focus on winning games because the first 2 seasons have been pathetic.
#30 Wish it soooooo bad!!!!!!
Come on Max,come to Hawaii!!!!
WE need you, we want you!!
u b da game changer!!!
LOL Chow is a piece of work. He seems to have a problem with the truth.
Reardon 2
Chow 0
I support Chow and want the team to succeed, but as the Head Coach of a Division I football program, that’s just not acceptable or appropriate behavior. I don’t know. I don’t get it.
Maybe the media needed to get a press pass or some type of pre-approval before showing up for spring practice and Reardon just showed up out of ignorance…or maybe not.
Would be hilarious if Reardon is allowed to stay and somehow gets hit by an accurate errant sideline route throw and then an accidental blindside thump by an overzealous safety.
At any rate, if it is personal then Coach gotta suck it up. Be the man not the baby.
#30, should have waited a few hours before posting #31
#15, do college students still use the “Disco”????
opps, use the word “Disco”
Ok But how did the team practice.
Physically did they look in shape,
High energy???? What was practice
like???
Wasn’t the story last season that Chow refused to answer questions from Reardon on the phone and demanded Dave go to practice if he wanted to ask questions. I remember ST urging Dave to meet Chow half way and ask his questions at practice. Now that Dave attended practice we see where the real problem lies.
As my Sole friend would say, “Dis co hea and dis co dea”
44. Might be mixing up Dave and Ferd…
So it was one of these kinds of days for Chow and Press? Lol
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgqQshESm8s
Please in other Universities, the head coach and cut off anyone. So don’t see needs to a man. Hello know the truth.
The bottom line is Reardon is not gonna kiss Chow’s okole.
GO WARRIORS!
“Disco is just jitterbug.”
Fred Astaire
“I never really did any disco dancing.’
Barry Gibb
“Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive.
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin’ alive.”
Doin’ the John Travolta strut…
Is this an April Fools joke ?
Speaking of jokes, there’s only 2 lawyer jokes in the whole world, the rest are true.
“You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.”
Abraham Lincoln
Is there a special reason/excuse that the young players from “down under” leave the football program early and go to the mainland to finish their career?
it was a good move for Jesse Williams at Alabama with one or two national championship rings
contine to #56:
I thought Blake Miur and Ben Dew would make significant contributions to the program to attract future players from Australia and New Zeland
Been away for a while. Did Rivers make a decision on where he going to school?
The head coach can do whatever he feels is appropriate and in the best interest of the team. If writers are stupid enough to write stuff that is damaging to the team he can get banned. It happens all over the college campuses. I don’t know what the true story is but coaches can ban anyone from practice and they have.
4 wins over two years and half of those were against FCS opponents.
At this point there is not too much anyone in the media can do to “damage” the program.
If Chow has a problem with Reardon then fine, don’t address him and he can go as far as to ask him never to appear, but to cut off all other members of the media?
What a joke.
A-House, players leave, players stay, it’s all coaching, the atmosphere, comfort level, attitude, personalities, and whatever makes you want to stay or go.
Joke? Did someone say joke?
How many reporters does it take to change a light bulb?
None, they don’t change it they just report it.
This is not a good way to start spring practice. Hope things improve so there are no distractions.
McMackin had problems with Reardon too. As I remember, he would talk to all reporters except DR. Reardon is playing his role, so it is what it is. As Duke (above) said, this happens everywhere. I don’t blame Chow for what he did. Don’t blame Reardon either, but them’s the consequences.
Sounds like an April Fools joke or just a bunch of fools (all parties, if true) 🙂
You’ve been punk’d. 😆

#61:
true, but why would UH continue to recruit “down under” if this is a fore bearing of things to come – I would think there is some degree of uneasiness amongst the recruiters
perhaps the check list should be reviewed/changed if necessary
my take on the hatfields n mccoy’s…..if from the article from “i am getting to old for this”…me would back coach…ST said that DR is a “very good writer n very intelligent”…..if so…n if article was in coaches view malicious n written to malign n to “make aspersions about age”…then for me DR is wrong…but only he n the “shadow knows” (dang me miss listening 2 that)…. me can only imagine the fire storm if sum was malicious to write an article like that about late mr. Inouye…or mr. Burns or mr. Ariyoshi….etc…or most seniors..as most politicos n coaches are fair game for most journalist…n there are and always will be a few willing to show no respect…
so when “smoking joe” passed…his children…till this day never forgave mr. Ali for all the mean …vile…n malicious things he said about their father…as “hype” 2 sell tickets….can you blame them…???
now comes…”mr. intelligent”….is he just writing hype to make controversy….and sell papers…? ? ?….well only “the shadow knows”….
I am fairly sure DR will neva have the balls 2 apologize if his intent was malicious…n to malign coach….cuz to do so would probably be a first 4 a journalist 2 do so in print…
A sports writer once called Mr. Hank Aaron a “coward” for declining to attend when Barry Bonds would break the career home run record….
Malicious intent…??? yet follow his career….n you will see a list of…mis-steps…that even got him suspended…..just several weeks ago…an
article about mr. Noga…..malicious with bad intent…or just for controversy n sell papers …???
ne way…hope spring ball goes well…with nothing more then a few scrapes n bruises…stay healthy all…..
IMUA
Why recruit from Australia or New Zealand? You may find another Dunnachie, Harding, Colin Scotts, Matt Mcbriar, Fotu (NZ), the big tackle from New Zealand, and a host of past softballers, water poloist, swimmers, etc.
I like Dave Reardon reporting style, it’s tough, honest no BS opinion writing. But Chow does have say on who, what, when, where and how gets to be at his teams practices and things of that nature. He not the first coach to control his team from the press and he wont be the last one. Did anyone watch the ESPN 30 for 30 about the Big East and Georgetown basketball head coach John Thompson? If not, you would have seen a coach who didn’t kiss the media okole but rather control and shun the media from the players and pretty much everything.
The bottom line is Chow is not gonna kiss Reardon’s okole.
Actually the bottom line is Chow shut off all media members present because of ONE guy.
That’s petty and unprofessional.
I remember in baseball, after practice was over, we had to run bases. If one person didn’t run it in the allotted time we ran it over…Coach called it a team effort….incentive program.
The offending player was asked to provide popsicles at the next practice.
so no reports from ST today?
What’s up with all these earthquakes near Chile? Tectonic plates doing the disco.
8.0 quake off Chile….stay tuned..
“Im here to end the borrowed time you’ve all been living on.”
If something comes Guy Hagi is going to have a field day watching the tides at Hilo bay.
#67’s link to today’s practice video hard for my old eyes to follow.
Ben Dew is neither Australian, New Zealander or a local Hawaii product.
He is from the mainland and a son of Christian Missionary Parents.
Great guy who will get more PT at Houston, than at Baylor (where he was originally mentioned as going).
you should be ashamed by not sticking by your peers. CHOW is a bully. SAY IT. he is digging a nice grave.
Big Wave, Ben Dew lists his hometown as Auckland, NZ. http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/516951/ben-dew
BigWave:
if Ben Dew lacked playing time at UH, would he not get “less” at Houston IF they recruit better OL players than Hawaii?
something stuck in my mind that he was coming in from a foreign country his freshman year and I linked that to “down under” – his older sister played for the Wahine BB team and people kept saying that she was from Australia
23: Jeezy…Is this a surprise? Reardon had the same problem with MAC. I’m not surprised that Chow asked him to leave…
BigWave is correct. Ben and Rebecca’s parents are Christian Missionaries. They came here from the mainland, both went to Word of Life Academy. The senior Dews are now in New Zealand. That is why Been’s hometown is listed as Auckland, NZ (you generally call the place your parents live your hometown). If you ever talked to either of them for very long it quickly becomes evident that they weren’t from New Zealand or Australia.
Sorry, fat fingers – Been’s = Ben’s
39
Rolo’s not here…how’s jordan’s arm???
Chow is a punk.
Most teams have closed practices. Kinda hard for hawaii to have a closed practice, unless they practice at les’ house…or in gym #2.
Dave wrote two columns 12/2/13 and 12/11/13 that Chow probably took exception to. His actions today, if are true, takes pettiness to a new level. He’s the leader of this team, he should have thicker skin than to make a distraction out of something that was written last year. He’s setting a bad example for the young coaches under his tutelage and for the players.
I’ve implied several times since the end of the season that Chow has taken a bunker mentality. That he’s been avoiding the media at all cost. Today confirms my suspicions.
cocobean,
Did you read comments from other people? Its all Dave Reardon’s fault and its ok for Chow to behave like this because “it happens everywhere else”.
(sarcasm)
hope nothing happens to hawaii or is minimized from the earthquake in Chile. they sure get huge quakes in Chile.
WOW,
It’s a sad day in Manoa, more turmoil, more strife, more chaos…. oh well, it is what it is….. when i said ‘let the games begin’ the other day, i meant on the field….
GO WARRIORS
O.K., O.K. – while some guys are yap-yapping, here’s something …
UH coach Chow cancels interviews because of columnist’s presence.
http://www.staradvertiser.com/news/breaking/20140401_UH_coach_Chow_cancels_interviews_because_of_columnists_presence.html?id=253484241
isn’t it april 1?????
RE: #95
Hmmm, the article was written by ST, which makes it factual and no one can suggest an outsider slant in the reporting. But I am surprised how far the rift has become, although I admit reading DR’s columns once in a while in the printed copy sports page before using to wrap fish.
I’m confused. So which one of the SA reporters is the one who never attends practice because of a feud with another reporter??? Need to make a chart to keep up with all the drama.
# 97.
Said column is used by my dog to read, before he “goes”.
lol
next
But note in the story linked in ai-ees-soos’s #95…
“…Out of respect for media cohorts, Reardon said he was attempting to leave the field when the outburst occurred.”
Hate to be a sea lawyer here, but this indicates to me that Reardon knew he was persona non grata there and was attempting to leave before Chow nabbed him.
Now, I’m wondering how DR knew he shouldn’t be there… 😕
Ben Jay and Rob DeMello tweet quotes from Norm Chow:
To the effect of apologizing for his actions taking away from a good practice and how his focus moving forward will be on the team and the season.
Norman Chow’s message to reporters who don’t tow the line is loud and clear.
#84, A-House, Ben Dew would have played more last year, weren’t it for injuries.
Earlier this year, someone mentioned Ben might walkon at Baylor.
Thus why I mentioned Ben going to Houston might be better for his playing time because Baylor has and recruits much higher quality Oline than both Houston and Hawaii, so competition will be much greater with the Bears
Headline should have read: Crybaby abruptly throws hissyfit at StarAdvertiser columnist Dave Reardon and cancels media interviews.
91- agree with you. And contrary to the Chow apologists, it is not common for a coach to pick and choose which reporters can have media access. Lane Kiffen tried it at USC when he banned a reporter for violating Kiffen’s “no reporting about injuries” rule. School lifted the ban, which was one of Kiffen’s many follies before his termination. Handling the media is one of the job requirements of being head coach. Chow, a lifetime assistant, lacked media expertise when he was hired by UH. Can you teach an old dog new tricks? Maybe. Maybe not.
Reardon: 3
Chow: 0
Never mess with a guy who has the power of the pen or a column.
You going lose.
I don’t think I read any positive Reardon articles on UH football since Chow was hired.
Coaches are human too. If someone talks stink about you or your family, you don’t have to let him into your house. No one is paying NC to be media savvy, he’s getting paid to turn the team around. Most expected it would take three years for UH to become competitive in the MWC. This is the season that expectations must be met. Give the guy some slack, he knows all the cookies are on the table now.
Everyone’s excited that spring ball is here and Chow throws a tantrum and makes a total ass of himself. Someone give the baby his lollipop! Talk about scaring away recruits! Who wants to play for a crybaby! Waaaaaa Waaaaaaa!!!
Some could say it’s his honest opinion in journalism, some could call it bachi.
Last I checked, Reardon was a respected columnist, not a cheerleader.
If you want a cheerleader, read lizkauai or the lady who writes about her hubby.
109. His job is to report accurate and factual information. No offense but Hawaii has won only 4 games in 2 seasons. Not a lot of good to report about besides selling hope to fans…. We all have hope going into a new season though…
110 – Actually, Chow is paid to be media savvy. That is why he is paid to appear on the a TV show called “inside Access with Norm Chow”. . . Before UH, no one wanted to pay Chow to be media savvy. That is why he was a lifetime assistant. As Kevin noted, other coaches would jump at the opportunity to have their players interviewed by local media. First day of practice. Everything is positive.
Fiction. For entertainment purposes only.
In a statement released by UH this pm, Chow said the following:
“Ah, um, err, ah, that is, ah, I sorry, ah, brah. My feelings was hurt. The braddah said some bad tings about me and da line , clune. So I was mad and like scrap wit him. Sorry I wen act stupid dis morning. Ok. Dave can come watch practice. Das all. Tanks.”
Being an old educator, I’m going to take a wild guess at what old Ed.D Chow said to DR… assuming he spoke to him directly beforehand…
“…and you are not allowed to interview any players and staff at practice. And if you show up, no media persons will be allowed to interview. [[[this so you can’t say you were solely excluded… and give you some responsibility and consequences to others for your actions]]]”
On the other hand, I can understand why DR would want to call his bluff. Only problem, not a bluff.
Of course, this is my speculation and I am very curious what the real backstory is… but I don’t think ST will say.
Faka shut up chow haters! If any of u haters was on my team I would swoop your a$$!
Chow expects the media to be his lap dogs. I expect all the media (tv, radio, writers, that means you ST) to boycott UH Football by giving zero coverage until Chow personally apologizes to Reardon for being an Ass.
I’m sure he wrote bad about Chow even before he stepped on the field.
Chow needs the W’s to shut everyone up.
and in bringing the two men together to have a better understanding of each other, both are invited to the next cattle call on Oahu. Right, SteveM.
I know he’s your friend, ST, but Reardon is a HACK. Chow was silly to throw a temper tantrum and penalize other media types, true. But people defending Reardon apparently don’t understand (or care) about journalistic integrity at all.
Just gonna quote myself:
WarriorMojo:
January 8th, 2014 at 3:42 pm
Gonna have to agree with Nuha here. Reardon’s column was a hack job, as it usually is.
What is with this unnamed source who says “it’s gonna be a challenge for him [Clune] to relate to the Hawaii kids.” Seriously? How does Clune even defend himself against that kind of thing? Why not just call him a “dumb mainland haole” and be done with it?
That kind of anonymous, racist innuendo is pure crap. And THAT is why you get banned from locker rooms.
WarriorMojo:
January 8th, 2014 at 3:57 pm
One last thing re Reardon’s column. If it is HIS opinion that Clune will have a hard time relating to Hawaii kids and he stated that opinion, then I actually have no problems with it. As a columnist, he is paid for his insight and if his insight leads him to that conclusion, then so be it.
What I disrespect and even detest is this use of anonymous innuendo. Don’t hide behind someone else’s conjecture. If it’s YOUR opinion, say so. But do not blindly repeat someone else’s rumor mongering, especially without fact checking. Is this the Enquirer?
clueless
my little birdie told me that there was an incident on a road trip that was the root of all this.
sorry, i can’t reveal the story. you know if someone says not to tell, then, you shouldn’t tell.
I just hope Al Noga does not see Reardon at the Warrior practice upsetting Coach Chow.
warriormojo…that was one of many incidents where trust was broken and irresponsible journalism occurred. so true brother.
…nuff said.
st, has a wealth of “facts” compiled in his pandora. but, would never reveal those stories.
a journalist and a lawyer follow like principles; maintaining a certain level of trust between client and professional is imperative.
126…lol
Looking forward to seeing Jeremy Castro, Quinton Pedroza, Kory Rasmussen, and Luke Shawley show their stuff this spring and into the fall. The season opener against UW can’t come soon enough.
“he is a good writer n very intelligent”…. DR knew exactly what he was doing n intentional….look what he produced…many more comments 2 day…just nothing positive about the team…shame on DR…for that…
#108 mr. fj….he he ur funny sumtimes….guess we all should knuckle under by ur thinking….don’t 4 get my bet….maybe ur a “shill” 4 DR ??
he should come here PI…n do sum writing…here bullets is mightier..34 journalist paid with there lives cuz they wanted to cover a story about sum dude just on his way 2 file papers for an elected office…
DR…is intelligent 4 sure….but 4 me…his BS..is not convincing…”i was willing to leave”….is pure shibai….if he was willing 2 leave…why not have some balls n approach “coach” n say i will leave…let the media stay…no need 2 apologize…n just leave…that is the positive way things should be done…enough said…
Well OK. Coach Chow may lose a few points for artistic impression but I give him high scores for technical merit.
It is very easy to kick the coach and the team when they are down, whether you are a journalist or one of those on this blog who delight in the opportunity. But I guess coach is very straight in saying don’t mess with me. I would suspect that those on this blog who are so critical of the coach would quickly make shi shi pants if they ever had the courage to say their drivel to his face. I don’t have a problem with coach standing up for himself and his team of coaches. I don’t know anything about the “road issue” but I thought the Reardon article was pathetic with it’s unsupported claims of Clune’s potential “problem” relating to Hawaii players.
hey “al” come to balibago in june with whitey n whisper my ear what the birdie told you….old podogee proverb…”3 can keep a secret…if 2 are dead” he he he
it is the business of selling newspapers to bring revenue and remain employed…gotta write something provacative during the slow off season.
# 132….100% …correct…seems “coach” is one that will stand in back his coaches…many 4 get what he said back then…n saying it all over again.. but using a different name…cluney….noga…moses…not read what was said about mr. gouveia in ne thing…n 4 those tgink he has not proven him self as a coach…i can only imagine…there is no offense he has not seen before after all those years in the nfl…
In his eyes coach was just backing up his team (asst coaches included) because he felt that the opinion writer disrespected his DC with his article which was just that writers opinion, and as a true leader he felt he couldn’t just let that slide. I’m sure if he wrote something about Coach himself he would let that go but not about a member of his team. As a team member you have to appreciate and respect the coach backing his team up, even if you do not agree with the way it was done. I always thought it was the news media job to report the news, not create it. GO BOWS!
Bottom Line Norm Chow is a Crybaby and He Holds Grudges…Beech.
I agree that the article is pathetic…and disrespectful to a newly hired coach. Basically called him chopped liver. Trojan is right. Reardon does know what he’s doing. He writes to stir the pot. That’s his style. He knows the chow haters will jump on the bandwagon of negativity, which will then nudge the chow supporters into counter punching…
Dave Reardon knew damn well he was going to stir the pot. He relishes his egotistical power of the pen role in a one paper town. There are many ways to do your job and he chooses to be an antagonistic demolitionist. You don’t need to be a rah-rah columnist, but at the same time, you don’t need to tear down and salt the wounds of a program that desperately needs support. There is no money. NO MONEY! And much of that is not because of the team’s won-loss record, but rather the total lack of support. TOTAL LACK OF SUPPORT! PERIOD! The win and they’ll come attitude is as poor an excuse to be a fan as can be. Negativity. Hate. Vile disdain. All from people who think they are so much better a representative in life than someone else. The team needs support people. SUPPORT! They need SUPPORT! SUPPORT YOUR TEAM!
yea…support is what they need…agree haka…excellent point…
Manoa#1 exhibit A.
The best thing that can be said about Chow’s behavior is at least he apologized. Chow and Reardon do have a “history” of bad blood between them. I believe the Clune write up was the straw that broke the Chow’s back.
Reardon is paid to express his opinions. If he’s dissatisfied with some aspect of the football program he’ll write about it. As the saying goes he tosses praise around like he’s tossing manhole covers. Nothing wrong with that. It reflects his personality which I described as dour and Sgt. Friday like. He’s critical within reason unlike FJ/Indy (who I believe are the same person).
Chow is paid to be the head coach of the football team. To throw his own words back at him, it’s within his pay grade to deal with the media with a certain degree of civility and cordiality. They’re professionals in their field just as much as he’s a professional in his.
The biggest losers in all this are the assistant coaches, the players and the fan base. What must be going through the teams mind (coaches and players) after seeing close up their leader’s actions. I can imagine their families and friends peppering them with “what happened?” Not with “how did it go today?” Talk about a distraction. Chow should apologize to the team. While he’s at it he should apologize to the fan base for being a party pooper. Fans were looking forward to the opening of Spring ball. Looking forward to the stories that would renew their enthusiasm and renew their hope for an improved team.
Fei Jai: Exhibit B
Look at Dave Reardon’s body of work: perfect, no; but thoughtful, intelligent, well researched and well expressed. Coach Chow was wrong in his outburst and he apologized for it. Hey, sometimes you may not like how the ump (the columnist) sees it, and the coach will charge out of the dugout, screaming and kicking dirt. But umps are human, and coaches are human. Let’s leave it at that, shall we?
“coco”….maybe ur right…but throwing dung in a persons face…in words…gets to be “hard 2 handle”…we all have our breaking point…sum more then others…but for the most part agree with you…maybe DR should face the wind up at pali n try it with elephant dung…just saying…he he he
Sorry but to compare a columnist (allowed to express personal bias) to an ump who should be unbiased doesn’t seem like a good example. I do agree that everyone is (supposedly) human.
Reardon’s “go to” when he doesn’t have a good relationship with a coach is that they aren’t a good fit for Hawaii because of the dynamics of the people and culture here. Since he so endeared himself to Chow after the initial hiring, it’d be hard for him to write that now even though it may be correct, so I guess he’s decided to do that with his choice of assistants/coordinators. I didn’t read the articles on Clune, so I’m just speaking on what I’ve read from him in the past.
I’m not a Chow fan at all and it has been mentioned Reardon just writes opinions but he does need to take some responsibility that his personal opinions obviously are biased by his poor relationship with the head coaches. If he’s going to write how certain coaches aren’t good for Hawaii, he should also preface those articles with the fact that he has a poor relationship with the current coaching regime because his article influence many of his reader’s opinions without much justification. I remember reading many of his columns during the last days of McMackin and there was no question they were influenced by the fact that both disliked each other.
While Hawaii certainly could be hard for mainlanders with no Hawaii ties to fit in or adjust to, many who appear would never succeed do well. Therefore, that line of thought only works when the coaches don’t win.
what happened was kind of like a basketball coach who ranted and raved then drew a technical foul, probably not using appropriate language, or acting appropriately, but served the purpose of firing up his team and bringing them closer together. Apologize? for what, backing up his DF? He did apologize for disrupting practice but not for backing up his team, how can you not appreciate your coach for his passion and loyalty to his team. For those of you who cannot see that, makes me think that you were never on a TEAM before. GO BOWS!
If I were on the team I would not expect an apology from Coach Chow. I would however, tell him that he shouldn’t let the external forces get to him because we will not let it get to us. We are team. We take care of our own. Us against the world if you will. I wouldn’t need an apology from anyone.
ruffles. At the time the team had no idea where Chow’s outburst was coming from. Bewilderment was the general reaction. WTF is going on? Chow’s outburst was not in the heat of battle, to me it served no purpose other than in your words, disrupting practice. I do think he owes the TEAM an apology.
We know about norms coaching ability.
Now we know norms character.
Thanks for sharing, Norm.
Fei Jai: what about our bet…come on dude lets have sum fun….leave our personal opinion at the door of mc-do’s…can do ? ?
I read the Kevin Clune article written by Dave Reardon, In my opinion, it was pathetic.
I find it hard to understand how a person can form an “opinion” of another person, without ever, and I mean ever, meeting them or talking to them before forming said opinion.
Oh, and it’s not the first time Reardon showed his real colors, I clearly remember his harsh words toward Al Noga’s induction into the UH Circle of Honor.
Luckily, I spoke to a few people today, and it is their knowledge that Reardon already was sent the message he wasn’t welcomed, and he still, basically to throw it in everyone’s face, showed up anyway.
That tells a lot of what I need to know about a man’s character.
To me, he knows damn well what he was doing. And that’s pushing buttons.
Pretty simple from where I come from, be a chicken-sh*t person, and well, be treated like chicken sh*t.
Columnists and their “Power of the Pen”, I can respect a man’s opinion, I can respect writings that make us all think a little bit, but, only if it comes from a first-person account. Opinions based on second, third, even fourth party information, to me, horse sh*t.
And when a columnist resorts to bullsh*t e-mails, or “sources”, or hides behind “my friend told me”, or uses idiots on Facebook as source material.
Don’t even get me started.
Remind anybody of somebody?
Now he’s all high and mighty, almost relishing it all over Facebook, bragging about doing two radio shows and a TV interview, if I’m not mistaken, isn’t a journalist, and I’m assuming that’s what a columnist is, well, isn’t one supposed to cover the story and not be the story?
I’m just venting, if I offended anyone, I apologize.
And no, I am not sucking up to Norm Chow. Fact is he should be criticized a bit, and fact is he should be thick-skinned enough to acceot it, deal with it. let us not forget, UH football team was 1-11 in 20-13, 4-20 in two seasons under Chow.
What in God’s name does he expect, praise?
Be real. That’s about all we as fans, readers, viewers and bloggers can ask for right?
Have an opinion, fine. Share an opinion, fine. but be factual and honest please. Making stuff up is for fairy tales.
st. anthony Trojan…the boss would kill me.
well you can hide out here..no need go back..whitey n friends will bring you care package twice a year…he he he….
good…to..be..loyal..al….
@ Nuha’s 153. Nicely written. 🙂
yea …he pulls no punches huh…double B….
#153……I could not agree with you more. All too often I read articles that have very strange comments that are “negatve” in nature for no good reason. I support the program the athletes and the coaches…..we just do not need this nonsense right now…..I just wanna win! Go Warriors!!
I agree with many of the posters in regards to their opinion on Sir Reardon. The attibutes of being a good writer and very intelligent, are fine and well, however they do not nessacarily equate to you being an objective and measured journalist.
Supreme Court Justice Anthony Scalia has a singular intelligence and brillance, one so bright, that folks on all sides of the political spectrum cannot deny or ignore. Moreover, he is equally talented with both the pen and quips. That said, he is at once caustic, overbearing, pedantic, condescending and impertinent, when it comes to folks who either don’t support his side or understand his opinions.
As I have previously written, one does not get a medal because they are straight-forward and speak in binary facts; what is more telling is how you lay these facts out, and if these facts are slanted in a particular direction for you to form an opinion. Make no mistake about it DR in a fairly nuanced way, he is corraling the reader to reach and commiserate with his specific vantage. Neutral or objective he is not…..
My opinion is that Readon and Chow deserve each other. They are both pathethic at their jobs. They need to realize that they need each other. At one time, UH football articles were the main draw to the Star Advertiser, probably still a major news item despite the recent losing records. Chow needs coverage to maintain interest in his team. They should both be fired.
Sofaking_dimm, LOL. If you’re still supporting Chow then you name serves you right.
Chow is a good guy if you need a partner for lawn bowling.
As a d 1 hc, better to get a Larry price. At least price would be more entertaining.
LOL all 10 of the Chow lovers have found a place to roost.
Unfortunately our bean counter AD Bad Job won’t fire him because he can’t afford to so we’re stuck with this miserable old fart until his contract is up or he drops dead which ever comes first.
Well, that’s certainly one way to drum up interest during the offseason. Then again, wouldn’t be the first time a head coach reacts negatively towards the media. At least it wasn’t caught on video and posted on You Tube.
In other news, 2014 football schedule according to the NCAA’s strength of schedule method, based on win/loss record from the previous season, has been reported showing Hawaii ranked 34th in the FBS. Take it for what it’s worth.

That schedule is very winnable, we shouldn’t have any problems beating most of these teams but with Chow as HC have no chance.
good morning tsaikos. am truly glad that the tsunami was a small one and no loss of lives or property damage.
go warriors and start putting together all the pieces to make a solid warrior team.
JMHO that Coach needs to try to have his actions measure up……to one of his favorite inspirational quotes from Martin Luther King Jr. (as Coach recited last season and at the Na Koa Awards Banquet)…..to show that these are more than just inspirational words…..
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
Coach Chow, I hope you win every game. Then your critics will slink away.
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
A good friend once told me not to get into a p*ssing match with the press because you will never win!
Boolakanaka: Judge Scalia is a Yale grad, isn’t he? 🙂
(My friend was a Yale grad too!)

f–k Dave lol
“Just Win, Baby!”
Who was that former Star Bulletin writer who came down on Bob Wagner after he (along with AD Stan Sheriff) criticized CSU for painting the visitor’s locker room pink? Mike, something.
Bottom line is to increase readership.
Agree with Kapakahi. Bottom line for Chow is that he needs to win, now. No more excuses.
Julian Gener’s return is a major plus, IMHO.
171. Honorable Tommui, fortunately, Justice Scalia is a graduate of that “other law school” up the road near Boston. There are 3 current member of YLS on the court: Aliota, Thomas, and Sotomayor, and 7 previous YLS graduates who served on the court in earlier times.
Football folks will be happy to know that former SC Justice Byron “Whizzer” White, and a YLS graduate, was also a consensus all-american in college at Colorado and later played for the Steelers in the NFL. Not too shabby a resume…..
