Placement tests

Expect a depth chart at quarterback to be established as early as the middle of next week.
After that, the snaps, which currently are spread equally, will be distributed on a weighted system. The No. 1 quarterback will receive 75 percent of the snaps in 7-on-7 and team drills, and the No. 2 will get 25 percent of the snaps. The No. 3 will get mental reps.
Not enough of the offense has been implemented for the coaches to set a depth chart. Several plays were added yesterday and more will be added tomorrow.

* * *

Liko Satele, younger brother of Brashton Satele, is required to redshirt this season in accordance with NCAA transfer rules. He was added to the tight training-camp roster as a scout-team player.
That’s an interesting concept by coach Greg McMackin — players brought in not to compete for starting jobs but to help prepare the top-of-the-depth-chart players.
And that also follows McMackin’s straight-forward approach. After spring training, McMackin met with every player, telling each about his expected role this season. A few chose to transfer, seeking better playing time. Most stuck it out.

* * *

My brother has a parking pass. He rides a motorcycle. Today, his motorcycle was towed from The Tizer parking lot. Wuh? It cost him $170 to retrieve it. Even UH folks thought that was un-beee-lievable. I mean, UH people think we’re doing crazy things? And that’s why we’re going to have one less UH football story tomorrow. Of course, nobody has admitted to making the call.

* * *

Here’s former UH linebacker Matt Wright, who was the guest speaker on a guidance-counseling seminar today. Wright, who works as a financial planner, told the players the importance of academics. Wright’s UH roommates were Chris Brown and Pisa Tinoisamoa.

Here’s linebacker Adam Leonard. He suffered hamstring tighness today, but he should be OK.

adam-point.JPG

* * *

Here’s linebacker Solomon Elmimian preparing for practice. Elimimian made a great selfless play today, taking on a lineman to free Leonard to make a tackle.

Yah, baby… the Coltster is the bomb!

“Jim Zorn said he might rotate his quarterbacks differently Saturday than he did in the preseason opener. Starter Jason Campbell will again open the game with the first team, but rookie Colt Brennan might go in next instead of back-up Todd Collins.

Zorn wants to see Brennan operate in different aspects of the offense, considering that a few weeks from now Brennan will be banished to holding a clipboard for another year as he develops. “We may mix and match here as we go on,” Zorn said.

Regardless, Collins and Brennan will be playing a lot again, with the starters out there for three series, tops.”

Colt is already winning the hearts and minds of the fans… if he continues to deliver… how can they keep him on the sidelines with clipboard duty? The fans will go crazy! The Cult of Colt – as the mainlanders put it – is just waiting to explode. Redskin fans have been starving for a “franchise QB” for years.

  11. da princess' classmate August 7, 2008 9:00 am

interesting to note that on da wsn board, most people who’ve been to practice seem to think that g. alexander will eventually win da job. da only person ive heard who seems to solidly be on inoke’s side is bobby “if you’re in da market for a new car….get one of our mroning show mugs, heavy glass enbossed stein for beverages hot or cold” curran. gl to all of em, may da best man win.

on another note, on L & L show last nite, they stated this is only da 2nd time da gaytors have played a home game at 12:30ish EST in their history. no matter who you play, they gotta know this is going to take a LOT out of dem. gotta expect them to think they can save some energy for da U 9/6. let em think like that.

2 weeks til da pigout, 3 weeks 2 days till da gaytors. colt/cj saturday.

Good Morning TSAIKOs and CyBeerLurkers ….top of the moring….great to see Colt getting more snaps in a game situation…..and to the present Warrior team….get the reps and learn the skill positions and plays….and the (Warrior) beats go on….and on !!!!!!!

  14. las vegas August 7, 2008 9:09 am

As much as I appreciate Todd Collins’ play at the end of last year, I believe that Colt will overtake him on the depth chart by mid-season.

Barring injuries to Campbell, CB will see only mop up duty this year and the next.

  17. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 7, 2008 9:16 am

In a way, the Colt situation is mirroring our own team’s QB situation. What happens when the apparent starter (s) are challenged by the new JC guys?
At least, we Warrior fans can think- Heck yes- take the best guy- give us the best chance!

Some Redskins fans are like- heck no, a 6th round draft pick over a proven NFL guy??? WTH???

Until you get into the stadium (remember, the HOF game was in OHIO- Saturday will be a HOME Game at FedEx Stadium!) and the crowd goes wild!

Favre? unh-huh It will be Colt’s Big Chance. He better be studying extra hard this week.

So much for a cruising, clipboard learning year.

But, it would be awesome if CB5 were better, because he would win the QB1 position and take us to SB43 where we would totally win, just like the B52’s won of all our hearts with that Love Shack song back in the M80’s. Then, during our SB43 victory parade, we could get U2 to come and rock out with MK12 and BL85 (we would bring him back just for the SB43 parade) showcasing there B301 (represent!) rap skills.

  47. Nelson from DC August 7, 2008 11:05 am

Sorry to announce that Colt is not even being mentioned in the local news. So, any QB controversy or Colt following has been put on the backburner but there’s a rare sense of anticipation for this weekend’s game.
I live about 7 miles from FedEx field, deep in the heart of Redskins country. You can already see cars driving around with Redskins flags flying (a tradition for home game weekends). At my church, people put away their suits and ties to wear Redskins jerseys when the team is playing at home – I’ll be on the lookout for any Colt jerseys at church on Sunday. There will be over 90,000 people in the stands at FedEx field, which is ALWAYS sold out.
What Colt needs to do is play mistake-free ball. These are perhaps the only fans that are perfectly happy with a cloud of dust and 2-yards-at-a-time plays. Like it or not, Colt will be a backup, and there’s nothing worse than a backup who can’t take care of the ball. Colt has the number 3 QB spot in the bag. The pressure is really on Todd Collins not to lose his number 2 spot (although nobody is talking about it). Frankly, I don’t think Todd will lose his spot this year but his leash may get shorter.
My fearless prediction for this situation is that the Skins will play up Todd Collins all year as the number 2 guy who took the team to the playoffs last year (think “value”). If Colt is a bust, nothing lost. If Colt starts showing everybody what a steal he was as a 6th rounder, look for the Skins to lock-up Jason Campbell to a new contract next year and to let Todd Collins look for a starting job somewhere else. So Colt will start as the number 2 QB next year and, as rough as the NFC East is, it wouldn’t surprise me if he started a few games.
Colt, if you are reading this, those same 90,000 people you will be playing in front of already saw what you are capable of doing. The keys for this weekend are to take care of the ball, make good decisions, and manage the offense – nothing more – and good luck to you.

  48. eighty8 August 7, 2008 11:05 am

I’m a colt lover but i don’t want to express it.

That Redskins Message Board is full of Colt fans but since they have all come out of the woodwork due to his HOF game performance, once he comes down to earth the haters will come back even stronger. Since this particular blog is growing watch the haters come onto this board and start flaming away.

If Collins ends up being cut, I’d love for Colt to claim the #15 jersey for himself.

I remember reading somewhere that the only way NFL players can change their jersey number is if they move to another team. Which is why you see a lot of receivers changing from the 80’s to the “-teens” or vice versa when they are with a new franchise ala Randy Moss #84 (Vikings) #18 (Raiders) #81 (Patriots).

  51. gigi-hawaii © August 7, 2008 11:21 am

What about the NBA, though? Didn’t Kobe change his number while still a Laker? Someone told me it’s because the Lakers wanted to sell more jerseys.

I cannot wait for the NFL regular season to start. Then the Colt talk, comparisons, i told you so’s, arguments, etc will stop. He will be 2nd or 3rd string and there will not be much to talk about. WE CAN THEN concentrate on our Warriors.

Regarding jersey numbers, I think that pre-season is a different animal. Because the rosters aren’t set, I think that jersey numbers can change. I remember that Ashley Lelie had a different number in pre-season than the regular season. Maybe it just can’t change during the regular and post-season?

    Good Morning Tsaiko nation!

Had a fun time watching practice yesterday. Might have to do it again today. Gotta remember to print out a roster before I go so I can get used to the new numbers some of the players have.

Not sure if this was posted before!

“More than his throws, what I was pleased with is how he was looking to the right guy when he was backpedaling,” said Zorn, a former NFL quarterback. “He knew the plays, knew the routes. He should feel very good about his performance.”

i know it’s a little early, but for all you folks that have been to practice, what’s your gut tell you bout da QB spot. kinda anxious to see da reports from 2days practice, first one in pads, right??

kinda wanna c Mana Silva in action. must be a stud if he’s ahead of Erob on da 2deep. hope LWJ is working himself into better shape, definitely gonna need him to share da load with Libre.

Since Tyler Graunke is out of the picture, a least temporarily, I feel this is Inoke Funaki’s time to shine! As good as Greg Alexander is, I still think it’s unlikely he will overtake Inoke later on in the season. Inoke was impressive even in mop-up duty- -he looked very efficient and was terrific running the ball. He looked even better at the Stadium in the Spring Battle. He looked very calm, efficient & seemed in even better physical shape. I don’t see Alexander or Rausch picking up the nuances & subtleties of the Offense in one season. I have great anticipation of what these 2 guys will be able to do next year (with a whole season of experience with the Offfense)! In the meanwhile, I feel now that it might be prophetic that someone in the pre-season had touted Funaki as the pre-season Offensive Player of the Year?

  67. WarriorMojo August 7, 2008 12:13 pm

Okay, I’ve been holding back from posting to think about some of the comments from yesterday. If anything I said offended anyone, then I sincerely apologize. What was said was intended in humor, and I am sorry if it crossed the line.

On the other hand I have to say that I don’t feel any shame in anything I wrote nor do I feel that I brought any disgrace upon myself or my family. And, with that, I am done speaking about that forever.

  68. WarriorMojo August 7, 2008 12:16 pm

Okay, I’ll chip in few a few things I noted yesterday, Day 3 of practice.

Michael Washington looks to be explosive this year. Although he’s a smaller guy, he’s fearless in traffic and is always looking for YAC. It’s too bad he never got any PT before because the dude can play. I really tip my hat to MW and Bain. Both guys have been backups for three years without seeing any real playing time at all, yet both guys took care of their grades and in their off season workouts. As a result, both guys are penciled in as starters and are making the most of their opportunities. THAT is how you take care of business. THAT is what you call leadership.

The good news is that CJ was awesome coming in off the edge from the left DE spot. He would have had two sacks and several hurries in a real game. The bad news is that he was chewing up the right side of our O-line. He clearly got by Steiny on at least one of those plays.

I would say significant improvement was shown in the post-practice running. Just to give you guys an idea of what the drill is, the team is split up into two groups, basically backs and linemen. Both groups line up on one sideline and then have to run to the opposite sideline and back within a set number of seconds. IIRC, the backs run across and back without stopping while the linemen rest after crossing the field once. I think the time for the linemen was twelve seconds to complete each leg and then ten seconds of rest. Not sure about the times for the backs.

These guys were intense about the running. At one point I guess some guys were cheating because Estes yelled out, “Get back to the line! NO f*cking cheating!” I took a step back myself when he said that.

Anyway, I saw substantial improvement in the linemen. There was only one player who seemed unable to keep up and he was much better than when I saw him on Monday. For the record, it was NOT an Olinemen. Since I singled them out the last time, it is only fair to note that Ginlack and Hisatake were much, much better. Hisatake in particular looked good and didn’t seem to have any problems with the running at all, really.

Coach Smith is continuing to tinker with his guys, which is good. The first five were still Steiny, Lafu, Estes, Bear, and Kia, but I noticed that Hisatake got reps at LG. Adrian Thomas looks better and better at RT.

Bottomline, though, is the D is looking awesome and certainly they should. This is the second year that this system is in place and most of these guys were on the team last year. They SHOULD be comfortable with it and ahead of the Offense and they are. We gotta be patient with the O. They are installing a new system, with new players at critical positions. They will improve greatly once the starters are established and can get more reps. The Oline will then have a chance to jell, which they cannot do right now with all the changes.

Anyway, that’s my .02. Go Warriors!

    thanx for da report WM

been a little concerned about Steinhoff ever since da 2nd half of the reno game, he got beat numerous times by Nevada’s speed rusher (a frosh or 1st yr JC guy IIRC) in that 2nd half even though we pulled it out. i was hoping it was a technique thing but …..

anywayz hope he has competition and Smith and gerke help him out a little to combat these speed guyz or we’ll just have to give him some help from da RB position.

  71. Kekoa August 7, 2008 12:28 pm

Hiya Liz! Just making my rounds. Looks like you are doing better. I’ll be checking your chart here from time to time. Continue on your meds, get plenty liquids, get more rest.

For me, the choice today is: Fundraiser or Practice. Practice or Fundraiser + Pride’s call for support from the crew = Go Fundraiser! Gotta make sure Kauai is going to get a good replacement for Mayor.

  72. onarock August 7, 2008 12:33 pm

Thanks, WarriorMojo, for your $2.00! Wow, what a report. Your comment about Steiny brings back flashbacks of the SB performance. Man, he was getting beat bad! Guess we just have to trust the coaches on that call if he does stay at RT. Looking forward to your next report! Mahaloz!

  73. Kazz August 7, 2008 12:37 pm

    WarriorMojo,

Mahalo to you and all those that are able to get the practice reports in to add to the blog.

I can’t wait until Saturday when I can catch a few hours of this for myself and then for the most part of the week of the 18th.

By then things should start to really take shape (I HOPE…. no I BELIEVE!!!).

After the spring, I really started to become a fan of Adrian Thomas hoping he’d get looks at the #1 RT spot, but may the best man win.

Yah- and I wanna see how all the other QB’s drafted ahead of Colt will do this year.

Matt Ryan QB BOSTON COLLEGE 1 3(3) Atlanta will do either “enuff” or will do “well”.
Joe Flacco QB DELAWARE 1 18(18) Baltimore FLOP!!! Sheesh, this guy didn’t even play “true” Division I ball!!!!…(nothing against 1AA, but I am just disgusted with this. The illegitimate son of Mel Kiper WILL FAIL!!!
Brian Brohm QB LOUISVILLE 2 25(56) Green Bay so-so
Chad Henne QB MICHIGAN 2 26(57) Miami camp reports have not been too kind on him, seems like has accuracy issues. will struggle.
Kevin O’Connell QB SD STATE 3 31(94) New England no comment
John David Booty QB USC 5 2(137) Minnesota
Dennis Dixon QB OREGON 5 21(156) Pittsburgh
will roll out of the pocket on first snap and will get destroyed by a linebacker and then he will remember that the NFL does NOT favor the option!!!
Josh Johnson QB SAN DIEGO 5 25(160) Tampa Bay no comment
Erik Ainge QB TENNESSEE 5 27(162) New York no comment

i take ‘best’ to mean all around (blitz pick-ups and receiving) versus just toting the ball? if true why not Libre? i anticipate they’ll use all RB’s in some compacity throughout the season, so even IF Libre is the starter LWJ will get action.

  118. al August 7, 2008 1:53 pm

my opinion is that the staff like many of us were so enthralled with lwj’s numbers coming out of high school including his clock times of 4.35/40 that its like we are just waiting for the “explosion” to happen. the potential of lwj cannot be denied.

however, he seemed to suffer from either the two year layoff and/or the turf monster. (the same one which used to grab mike bass) perhaps he just needs the reps so that everything comes naturally (again) for him. perhaps he just needs to run with confidence and some reckless abandom. if he can do this in the next three weeks, he will be a force to reckon with. meanwhile, we sit back and wait.

while at the same time, we have daniel “nacho” libre. he kind of reminds of michael brewster. not to big in stature but can hit the hole like a bullet and has some shake and bake once he is dealing with the linebackers. he may not have the breakaway speed like leon and will probably get run down from behind by most db’s. but, by that time he’ll have churned up 10-20 yards already.

i also like his toughness and won’t shy away from a linebacker when he has to block one. he is the type that will get it done and he has good hands, too.

he runs with more instinct and makes quicker decisions when hitting the hole and usually takes the correct path.

if this new run n shoot opens up more running lanes like the st. louis offense of yesteryear, then, lwj may have a better time with it. it looks like he will get the first nod regardless and only time will tell who our everyday rb will be. meanwhile, i really like the fact that we have both runners, lwj and libre. those two plus the burly backs; farmer and heun will ensure that we have a lot depth at that key position.

I think this year we are somewhat blessed at the running back position, We have Force (Heun), experienced blocking (Farmer), Speed LWJ) and Finesse (Libre). Three completely different styles. If we put them in on exactly the right plays, defenses will be caught off guard almost every time. This could be fun to watch and will help the passing game tremendously, especially in the beginning. Heck, I would say let them all play.

Of course I’ve never seen a practice, so you can take this with a grain of salt.

Also, some people tossed this combination around:

    LT – Kia
    LG – AhSoon
    C- Estes
    RG – Letuli
    RT – *LaCount*

Anyone know the “skinny” on LaCount so far?

    Gigi,

Lets say the Advertiser thing was a commercial ad. I’m just fit enough to chase my better half around for a couple seconds. After that, I’m too tired. She’s too fast for me.

    Duffer,

Yeah. I remember Capt. Honolulu when I was a little guy growing up. Yeah…that was the Dark Ages (before the Age of Enlightenment and the arrival of Coach McMackin).

  146. Kazz August 7, 2008 2:47 pm

  152. Curt August 7, 2008 3:14 pm

    Gigi,

A female Advertiser photographer came to the Kapiolani tennis courts and wanted to get shots of some tennis players. So our friends called Meg & I over to represent the group. We in turn pulled 3 other players in as well. We heard it ran on TV as well but I never saw it. We had to sign our lives away but, it was fun.

  153. Kazz August 7, 2008 3:17 pm

    Let me get NUTZ here:

    Hawaii 13 Florida 11

Florida runs back opening kick-off. Then Hawaii blocks the extra point, BUT the ball is picked up by a Florida player and dives in for the 2-pt converstion.

    8-0 Florida in the first.

Scoreless 2nd quarter with Hawaii moving the ball well, but fumbles and a few picks are the end results.

Florida offense starting to have problems with getting any rhythm going.

    —HALFTIME—

Scoreless 3rd when Florida attempts a FG, then it is blocked again.

Hawaii able to run well in the 3rd but turnovers again plague the offense.

    Hawaii scores with a FG.

    8-3 Florida

    —4th quarter—

Hawaii maintains good posession of ball and Jake Huen runs in TD when Ron Lee pulls a goal line formation on 3rd and goal.

    8-10 Hawaii

—LESS THAN 5 MINUTES IN GAME—

Florida must kick another FG and this time it is not blocked.

    11-10 Florida.

—LESS THAN 2 MINUTES IN GAME—

Hawaii runs a drive similar to that of our game in Nevada last season.

    FG by Dan Kelly.

    13-11 Hawaii

    Last drive by Florida.
-1ST Down Tebow sacked for a loss of 4 yards.
    -2nd DOWN Tebow INC PASS
    -3rd DOWN Tebow INC PASS
***Florida on their 45yard line, impossible Field Goal attempt***
-4th DOWN Tebow INC PASS (swatted away by Mana Silva)

    TURNOVER and GAME OVER.

TEBOW- Picked off 3xs, Sacked 5xs, and rushed for only 85 yards.

HAWAII QB- Picked off 5Xs. Sacked 4xs

    HAWAII – 8 turnovers (5 ints, 3 fumbles)

HAWAII – Libre – 35 yards rushing 35 yards receiving, LWJ – 78 yards rushing 15 yards receiving, Farmer – 13 yards rushing 5 receiving, Huen – 20 yards rushing 0 receiving 1 rushing TD.

HAWAII – Greg Salas with 145 yards receiving.

    HAWAII – Ryan Mouton – 2 sacks . 1 INT.

HAWAII – Jameel Dowling – 1 INT (endzone).

    HAWAII – Adam Leonard – 1 INT

    HAWAII – Solomon Elimimian – 15 tackles

    HAWAII – Blaze Soares – 2 sacks, 3 tackles for a loss.

    HAWAI – John Fonoti – 1 sack, 2 tackles for a loss.

Defense will be big for both teams as Florida will have pretty good anticipation of Hawaii’s plays on key situations, but for the most part Hawaii will have MORE yards at the end of the game.

Despite the turnovers, Hawaii offense will move the ball fairly well, but again new offense and big game jitters will effect them in key situations, mostly in the “red zone”. (i.e. moving the ball well but get issues with finishing)

Hawaii defense will be the formidable foe for the Florida Gators.

    Ask Tebow.

Wow…I just noticed the 3rd party Hit Counter stats on the bottom of my Tsai-ko page… looks like we picked up 20 UNIQUE new visitors since yesterday and I notice that India and South Africa have appeared.

Already had Japan, Australia, Canada, Taiwan, Sweden, Philippines, UK, Luxembourg, Italy, India, Germany, China, American Samoa, Korea, Singapore, and Bulgaria.

These visitors are being directed from The Warrior Beat mostly (and some other blog sites). Since my counter only lists 20 countries, I wonder what The Warrior Beat’s international visitor stats look like…

Most likely Tebow will be so enamoured by his reflection that we’ll get a lot of delay of game penalties out of it and a few false starts as well!

At the same time, our boys will be doing the Ha’a over the Gator logo at the 50-yard line and Tim Tebow is seen running and crying to the locker room with Derek Dooley in tow and Urban Meyer right behind them trying to swat at Dooley with his clipboard.

Injuiries are a part of the game. Messing up the best laid plans of mice and men…

Florida coach Urban Meyer confirmed to reporters following practice Thursday night that senior tight end Cornelius Ingram would undergo season-ending knee surgery next week.

Ingram considered turning pro following last season, but elected to return for his senior season. The Gators had spent a big part of the spring and summer putting in a two-tight end package that would feature both Ingram and sophomore Aaron Hernandez.

“You feel terrible for [Ingram],” Florida quarterback Tim Tebow said. “He’s such a big part of what we were planning to do, and I know he was going to have a great season. We’ve got to handle it, deal with it and go on, but it’s not easy.”

Ingram, who’s already used up his redshirt year, could petition the NCAA for a sixth year, but Meyer indicated that the NFL would probably be Ingram’s next stop.

    Re: OLine,
IMHO I think they need to move Steinhoff inside to one of the G positions. Too many times I’ve seen him get beat by speed-rushers. Why do we have Hisatake, Kia, and Letuli battling one side when they are all capable of starting??? I like Lafu but think he may be too smallish at G and would be better at C. Estes is set at C but could move back to G, with Bear on the other side and Lafu in the middle???

    LT Kia, Letuli
    LG AhSoon, Ginlack
    C Lafu, Hansen
    RG Estes, Steinhoff

Feel that the no video/no photo policy in Manoa sucks?
Practices are now closed in Gecko-ville.

Whoever was a practice Wednesday witnessed the last open Florida football practice of 2008. Fans will be shut out of the Thursday and Friday evening practices after the gates were open for Monday-Wednesday. This was the only week practices were open for your viewing pleasure. This could have to do with distractions such as the injury to Cornelius Ingram, whose status could be more severe than indicated Wednesday night. Perhaps the MRI showed Ingram’s knee is worse than a strain.

Meyer also wasn’t happy with Wednesday’s effort, which was evident to anyone with a watch. Practice ran almost an hour past the scheduled 6:20 p.m. ending. Head football coaches also have a tendency to want to keep things private, so maybe the thought of a full week of open practices just ate at Meyer.

Anyway, hope you got your fill while it lasted.

    Re: Running Backs

With all the talk of Leon Wright-Jackson and Daniel Libre being co-starters and Jake Heun as the power back, lets not forget about good ol’ David Farmer. Wonder how all these guys will be utilized this year? I think LWJ and Libre should split carries, Farmer as the blocking back during passing plays, and Heun as the short yardage guy? Either way each of these guys are too talented to keep off the field.

Libre and LWJ should have a great season. With the emphasis on a more balanced attack, both these guys could rush for at least 750yds + and 500yds + receiving… plus double digit touchdowns too??? I think they could combine for at least 1,500yds + rushing and maybe 1,000yds or so receiving this year with about 15-20 touchdowns. IMHO

    LT Letuli Hisatake
    LG AhSoon Hisatake
    C Estes Tuioti-Mariner
    RG Steinhoff Tuioti-Mariner
    RT Kia Thomas

Pride, I like how you think. That’s exactly how I would line ’em too. The only question mark I would have is whether Steiny has enough pop to go inside. Really, with his build, he should be at LT, but he doesn’t like that side and doesn’t seem to have the feet or balance. I would give Ieru, Hisatake and Ginlack a chance to beat him out at RG.

On the other hand I wasn’t meaning to start a diss on Steiny session. He is a good player. Remember, Dane Uperesa was also susceptible to an outside rush (don’t think about the oregon state game, don’t think about the oregon state game, aw crap!). So was Brandon Eaton and he was moved inside. And so was Uriah Moenoa, and he was moved inside. Playing OT is no picnic.

    Koakane,

Early this morning, Rob and Russ were discussing the topic of cutting JV sports (STOOOOPID!!!!) and I almost forgot about it until you mentioned you are at the meeting.

I thought the meeting was to start at 4 or 5?

Either way… One would have to be a MORON (see Mike’s post at #190) to believe that a million or so dollars is worth putting so many keiki at risk and placing them at a disadvantage in life.

Yeah yeah yeah, the Dan Boylans of the world can go on about athletics vs education and NO HERE IS DEBATING that athletics should take priority over education, BUT ATHLETICS GOES HAND IN HAND WITH EDUCATION!!!

I can’t believe I am able to make a paragraph about this, when it’s just SO obvious that it will be a HORRIBLE idea and just by saying “it’s stupid” should be more than sufficient.

In high school I never benefited from JV or Varsity athletics (I never participated), but AGAIN, one would have to be a FOOL to think this is a somewhat reasonable idea.

  219. Koakane (Iphone) August 7, 2008 7:21 pm

    mtg is now starting

  220. al August 7, 2008 7:23 pm

oline…..although i would normally defer to my mentor…pride.

i still feel that tuioti-mariner should be given a shot at rg. somehow, somewhere, letuli will emerge as a starter come crunch time.

i wouldn’t write off steiny just either. the sugar bowl was not just his fault. it is hard to block two guys.

hisatake’s move to lg indicates that the real battle is with kia and letuli. i thought the latter did a great job in the sugar. he has great feet and balance.

    it’ll be interesting no doubt.

  221. Koakane (Iphone) August 7, 2008 7:24 pm

Lizk coach mac is sitting at same table as me just across

  222. al August 7, 2008 7:25 pm

  223. al August 7, 2008 7:26 pm

koakane…..i hope you didn’t bring koa-mahu with you.

  224. Kazz August 7, 2008 7:28 pm

    Koakane,

The meeting should really last about a minute.

    I can see it now:

This meeting is about… (interrupted by un-seen individual)

(Unseen individual) SHOULD WE EVEN BE DISCUSSING GETTING RID OF JR VARSITY ATHLETICS???

(Legislator) You’re right this is stupid, we all go Nancy’s…

  225. Kazz August 7, 2008 7:30 pm

    Al,

Seemed like the Governor’s support of athletics in Hawaii expired as soon as the Sugar Bowl trip concluded.

  226. LizKauai [Believer] August 7, 2008 7:31 pm

Chiefs drive and score again. Almost halftime. Bears ball with 4 secs.
    halftime

  227. LizKauai [Believer] August 7, 2008 7:35 pm

koakane, I posted on the article thread that they should lose NCLB and let the teachers teach and the players play!

    2nd half.
    Grossman QB

    0 for 0 for 0.

I don’t see his name on the play-by-play.
That is not to say he wasn’t on the field at any point but no one threw to him.

  242. LizKauai [Believer] August 7, 2008 8:30 pm

More reaction to TE Cornelius Ingram’s season-ending ACL injury hints that the Geckos may be doing some shuffling around with the playbook.

“It’s a letdown for everybody,” Tebow said.

Not having a big, athletic target like Ingram on the field would be a bummer for any quarterback. But where Tebow will probably miss the 6-foot-4, 245-pound Ingram the most this season will be on third down. Ingram was also money near the goal line because he was such a difficult matchup for defenses.

Meyer conceded that losing Ingram “puts a dent” into the Gators’ plans to use two tight ends some this season.

  244. d1島: August 7, 2008 8:47 pm

What it in the water in Boise?
ESPN (dot) com writer Graham Watson opened up the mailbag for questions and got this.

Ryan from Boise writes: It seems as though that you consistently underrate Boise State. With their past success, I don’t see how you can project that Fresno State will be better. When BSU hasn’t lost (technically) since WSU in 2001. How can you say that Fresno State will win the WAC? When they close out their season at BSU.

“hasn’t lost (technically) since WSU in 2001???

so btw……what happened at practice today?

  249. LizKauai [Believer] August 7, 2008 8:55 pm

Bears almost pau 40 secs left
Now I see RGM on the field.

During the last Chiefs TD, Leonard Peters was first to the runner Sippio and missed his tackle at the 2 yd. line ;-(

  250. Stephen Tsai August 7, 2008 8:58 pm

You know, of course, that Dan Boylan is a UH season-ticket holder for football and basketball.

  251. Stretch August 7, 2008 9:00 pm

    Good Evening Tsaikos!!

Kahuku’s Jeremy Perry may hold the key to the difference between Oregon St.’s season going from “mediocre to good”

Ask defensive players around the Pac-10 about Perry and they’ll tell you two things: 1. Perry is really good; 2. He doesn’t play nice.

Some might use an unprintable word.

“I don’t give a rats’ [pause for effect without using the expected word] who’s across from me. Nobody intimidates me,” Perry said. “I’m nasty, even if the whistle blows, I guarantee I’ll get the last shove. I bring that mental toughness and that finish to our offensive line.”

Perry said this over the telephone, but one could easily imagine him making his point while swinging around the leg bone of a large animal he just caught and killed with his bare hands.

Sure, Perry is polite. But I’ve seen him on film.

  253. Stephen Tsai August 7, 2008 9:02 pm

The rise of youth-gang activity in Hawai‘i coincided with the adoption of the 2.0 rule. Kids needs to do something after school. If it’s not sports, then they’ll find other activities — some not so useful.
It’s always amazing how people who have the most opinions on public education don’t send their kids to public schools. (Me included). In our news room, only Andy Yamaguchi, Davie Koga and Greg Wiles sent their kids to public high schools.

  254. LizKauai [Believer] August 7, 2008 9:02 pm

7 secs left, long pass to teammate who missed it, RGM went airborne and batted down the ball away from a defender. Good Job!

  255. Stephen Tsai August 7, 2008 9:03 pm

    Stretch:
You’re in high demand. All of the players want stickers. Apparently the Austins were not that generous in their distribution.

  256. d1島: August 7, 2008 9:06 pm

    Stretch,

    “Long day at work”, eh?
    How many yards?

  257. LizKauai [Believer] August 7, 2008 9:09 pm

ST- I agree so much with you on that 2.0 rule. #3 son has not played 1 day of HS sports even though he tried to make the team after playing baseball since he was 5 years old, soccer since he was 9 and Jr. Golf when he was 10 or 12. He was a decent player and thankfully, was able to play the ukulele to keep focused!

  258. OldDiver August 7, 2008 9:09 pm

LizKauai, Iv’e posted a few time on the redskins blog. The Colt haters seem to been the hardcore Jason Campbell backers. I don’t believe they are large in numbers it’s just that they are vocal. The reason they “hate” is because Campbell so far has not shown he is the real deal and they are insecure about that. The fact it is many long time Redskins fans feel Campbell doesn’t have it, so the Campbell backer are taking it out on Colt. Keep it up Liz I enjoy reading your posts on the Redskins blog.

  259. d1島: August 7, 2008 9:10 pm

    Stephen,
Absolutely agree. Esp. at that age belonging to a group, any kind of group, is vital.
Compound that with lack of supervision due to parents who work multiple jobs and it’s a real disaster.

  260. LizKauai [Believer] August 7, 2008 9:11 pm

OldDiver- I started a thread for Jason Campbell to give his fans a chance to sing. We’ll see what happens in the morning.

  261. Kekoa August 7, 2008 9:14 pm

Just back from Pride’s Fundraiser for Bernard Carvalho. Fantastic turnout! Pride led the way with former UH Warriors and their wives in total support mode. Lots of war stories from life in the trenches…

When I left, I had a chance to speak with JD as he was just returning from another engagement. Apparently he was there earlier.

    Koakane, back to you…

  262. Stretch August 7, 2008 9:15 pm

The State needs to figure out a way to allow “extra” money at the end of the fiscal year to stay with the respective department and not affect the way they distribute money the following year.

From what I understand, the $1.2 mil that was spent to send 652 DOE people to Florida for a conference was money that they had to use or lose it by the end of the year. If the DOE didn’t spend that money for the conference, it wouldn’t necessarily be in the DOE account the following year to be used by athletics. So instead of being able to roll over the money to help save atheltics, they spent it all.

It happens to all the State departments. Each department fights hard to get funding every year, that they have to show they really needed it. If they end the year with unused money, the following year, the Legislature will not give them the requested money since they didn’t use it all the previous year.

The State departments spend money unnecessarily at the end of each fiscal year to get money the following year. It’s a sad way to waste money that can be saved and used the following year.

  263. Stephen Tsai August 7, 2008 9:17 pm

Again, apologies for not being able to spell out Carvalho’s fundraiser, but we’re not allowed to write about political candidates.
I guess if we don’t behave, the paper will tow our cars.

  264. Stretch August 7, 2008 9:17 pm

ST – will work on getting more stickers made but with A-Joe on “vacation”, kind of hard. I’ll talk to him about it, maybe can work something out at his shop.

  265. d1島: August 7, 2008 9:18 pm

Bleacher Report ranks The Swamp as #4 in its Top Ten toughest places to play in CFB. LSU’s Tiger Stadium ranked #1. (Isn’t that the place that registered on a seismograph once?)

    4. Ben Hill Griffin Stadium — University of Florida. Florida has some of the best fans in the country and playing a game there is tough, even once, much less having to do it every other year like some SEC schools. The Swamp has given the Gators the second-best winning percentage at home since 1990.

  266. LizKauai [Believer] August 7, 2008 9:20 pm

Flacco – 0 for 3 in his first game

Dizon made two tackles as the third-string middle linebacker, including a fourth-and-1 stop for loss on Reuben Droughns early in the third quarter. Fluellen, a third-round defensive tackle, had a sack just before the two-minute warning with the Giants driving for a would-be game-winning touchdown.

    I don’t think he’s in Delaware anymore!

  269. BG August 7, 2008 9:24 pm

    Liz

Thanks again (and again) for all the info on Colt. Been to the ExtremeSkins site often in the past couple of weeks. I’ve concluded that it’s a waste of time compared to reading news articles posted by you, Garret and others. It seems to be a lot of folks making strong opinionated statements about things which they don’t have first hand knowledge. The same people posts the same things over and over again in slightly different ways. The number of posters who are open minded can be counted on one hand with fingers left over.

Spending some time “over there” are powerful reminders why I like being here where there’s respect and first hand reports!

  270. d1島: August 7, 2008 9:25 pm

  271. Stephen Tsai August 7, 2008 9:25 pm

  272. Stretch August 7, 2008 9:28 pm

ST – It’s good to be “the MAN” once in a while huh??!!??

  273. d1島: August 7, 2008 9:31 pm

    BG,

yep. first-hand reporting always gets the job done.

    Speaking of which.

An Elgin, Ill., car wash owner said the city asked her to take down a message on her sidewalk marquee that promised the best “hand job” in town.
Judith Colletti, owner of the Elgin Car Wash, said an Elgin code enforcement officer visited Monday and asked her to take down the sign, which she said was merely a humorous play on words based on the business’ model of having employees wash cars by hand, the Daily Herald newspaper in Arlington Heights, Ill., reported Wednesday.

  274. Stretch August 7, 2008 9:34 pm

    Good Night… see everyone tomorrow.

  275. LizKauai [Believer] August 7, 2008 9:38 pm

ST- I guess the shark alarm days are pau, eh?

BG- yup. Extremeskins is what Papa was describing. But I see the reaction as indicative of huge expectations and fear of disappointment in the face of the sudden loss of Sean Taylor and revolving coaches. If Colt can stay steady, he’ll find himself in the best situation and the starving Skins fans will be ecstatic

  276. Kekoa August 7, 2008 9:40 pm

Stretch ~ I understand the “use it or lose” end of fiscal year budget crisis in both State & Federal Gov’t. These things are forecasted way ahead of time. The problem leads to perception.

The public heard the hype on talk radio that the DOE spent 1.2 Mil. on a *boondoggle* to Disney World. Right away, the bells and whistles went off. Why? Because Hawaii being the smallest state, sent the largest contingent (10% of the total attendees) all the way to Florida!

Don’t want to get into the political mud slinging and get scolded by ST, but there is a lot of it going on right now because of JV football. Cut Aunty Linda some slack, remember she has that old boy network to deal with, and they use this stuff to make it look like it’s her fault.

She’s asking the hardball questions about exactly where the money is being spent. So let’s wait and see what the rest of the fallout will produce.

  277. LizKauai [Believer] August 7, 2008 9:41 pm

Nitey nite Stretch. Remember that there is a stack of posters and schedule cards at JD’s office waiting to come to Kauai. ChaCha is the contact.

    If can, can.

Matt’s a nice guy; and a good coach. Good luck to the Raiders this year – kind of…

Hope you’re right about Adam Leonard.

    Now I understand brother’s comment at 6:11 pm. 👿

  279. Stephen Tsai August 7, 2008 9:41 pm

I’ll tell you something. UH has had great guys and some not-so-great guys. Most guys are great interviews. Some give you that bug-off look. But every player, no matter what, always asks me when their careers are over: Can you give me photos?
    It never fails.

  280. Jason August 7, 2008 9:42 pm

Wow, just finished reading through all the comments I missed while on my trip. I was planning on visiting every night, but Ogg Hall only had Wi-Fi in the common areas, so I couldn’t just relax in my room and read the blog. I actually spent a good amount of my Wi-Fi time researching restaurants. I’ll post my pictures eventually, including those from the 5-star restaurant we visited … 😀

I do have to say, though, that my flights on United were very nice. I mention this cause there was talk about airplane service. Free soft drinks — although only cups of soda on the east-bound flight, but the flight from Denver to Honolulu gave out (multiple) full cans. The snack boxes are actually pretty good for $5 — I was expecting extremely small portions, but several small components together made a pretty decent substitute for a full meal.

jm2375: I saw your post the other day, so I checked into it. I forgot, it’s August. This always happens in August — my friend forgets to renew the domain name with the registry, and I forget to remind her. Rest assured, the domain name was renewed, but this registry takes a while to restore it.

Thanks to SteveM for also e-mailing me about these posts.

I already RSVPed for the Club Genji breakfast via e-mail to James and SteveM, but I wanted to ask on the blog — anybody from Da Wessai like stop by Salt Lake and pick up one hitchhiker? Can catch bus, but gonna cut it real close.

LizKauai: Take care of yourself, yeah? Make some jjigae. And that chicken soup you make, I think you use jujubes? My Mom makes jujube tea. 😛

prideperiod, WarriorMojo, and al: I personally like Letuli-AhSoon-Estes-Lafu-Kia. I’m not sure Steinhoff can play inside, I’ve always thought of him as strictly a tackle. And yeah, I don’t think all the criticism on Steinhoff is fair. He’s a good tackle, but I like what little I’ve seen of Kia too. And I’ve always been really high on Letuli.

  281. al August 7, 2008 9:47 pm

    stretch,

that same scenario happens at the feds. spend it or lose it. funny how govt agencies don’t reward the depts for staying below budget, instead they penalize them by cutting their budget the following year.

  298. WarriorMojo August 7, 2008 10:03 pm

Hey, Darren. Don’t really know about the shoes, but the guys all seem to be wearing them. What’s funny is how many guys run barefooted at the end of practice. In fact, it’s kinda like strip conditioning. Every lap more and more gear comes off. I think Rob and the Twins were enjoying that yesterday.

  299. d1島: August 7, 2008 10:04 pm

    Howzit Mojo,
I used to joke with both my boys about that whenever they played the Red Raiders (as they were known back in the day).

Good post on the DOE situation. You wonder what geniuses think up the procedures that guarantee that money will be spent regardless of the benefit/cost ratio.

The military did it a little differently (ain’t saying they do it BETTER 😀 ). A month or two before the end of the fiscal year, the finance people took control of all funds, and commanders had to justify an expenditure even if they hadn’t gone over budget. Reason for that was a law/regulation that sad if a post commander went over budget by even some loose change (I exaggerate a little bit…only a little), he could get canned. You could move money around for some high priority items, but there were a lot of limitations.

I did find it hilarious reading the DOE’s defense in spending the 1.2 mil. This was supposed to be such a prestigious event of importance that the rest of the huge United States could only muster 9 principals/teachers for every one from Hawaii. That’s 49 other states! That spokesperson must have been squirming in her seat as she read it! LOL

    HiFlyer,

and wen you read my last comment, no make fun, eh? 😉

  310. Jason August 7, 2008 10:30 pm

Okay, I wrote something earlier, then erased it. But I have to say it: Disagree with NFL draft pundits, but don’t ridicule them. I criticize Mel Kiper as much as anyone, but if it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t be as much of an NFL Draft afficionado as I am. And as much as I was pissed off by Ron Jaworski’s comments concerning Colt, he is usually a pretty good analyst.

Remember this: If someone came to me and offered me a chance to be the next Mel Kiper or Todd McShay, I’d jump at that in a heartbeat. I liked Rashaun Woods and Robert Gallery; are you going to laugh at me too for getting it wrong?

  311. Darren August 7, 2008 10:30 pm

D1 – Thanks….I remember that conversation now. I’d really like to get out there to at least check out a practice in person and see how everything is going.

  313. Kekoa August 7, 2008 10:39 pm

BG ~ That’s right BG. Now that the light of truth is shining on them, there is no wiggle room. I think the JV program will be saved because of this disclosure. The peeps will scream bloody murder as the probe goes deeper and they find out what exactly that money was spent on.

  314. homey August 7, 2008 10:40 pm

Jason – yes, I would laugh. No one is perfect. The job as analyst is ripe for critique and if you can’t stand the heat then one shouldn’t be in that field.

I recall a few months back many ridiculed and criticized Herman Frazier. But then again he wasn’t in the same field as Kiper or Jaws…

Here are pictures from my trip. I didn’t take as many pictures as I would have liked.

    http://picasaweb.google.com/jase0517/MadisonWI

    And food reports:

Wednesday Dinner: The “Runnelstone” from Dotty Dumpling’s Dowry, which was a restaurant specializing in award-winning burgers. 6 oz. hamburger with caramelized onions, cheddar cheese, and English garlic sauce. Very good, but very oily — my lactose intolerance hit the next day.

Thursday-Sunday Breakfasts: Buffet at Gordon Commons, included with housing. I thought it was gonna be just donuts and stuff — this was a full-fledged breakfast buffet. It was delicious, with a good variety of cereals, fruits, and prepared dishes every day.

Thursday Lunch: Beef sandwich from Monona Terrace. Not all that great, the bread was dry.

Thursday Dinner: Spaghetti with meatballs from Zia’s, a small Italian café on State Street. It was good, although the spicy marinara gave me heartburn.

Friday Lunch: Turkey and cheddar sandwich from Michelangelo’s, a small coffee shop downtown. Again, I got some mean heartburn, but it was good. The quality of the cheese was so amazing. And no, my lactose intolerance didn’t kick in — it wasn’t too oily.

Saturday Lunch: A smoothie from Orange Julius and an Italian sausage from a small lunchwagon at the Farmer’s Market.

Saturday Dinner: Lamb kebobs from this Afghan restaurant on State Street. My lamb was very tough, but Kim’s lamb dish had some amazingly tender lamb. I wish I got that instead.

  317. Kekoa August 7, 2008 10:42 pm

I caught you peeping in the windows of the Tsaiko Playhouse Esme! Ahanakukaleili!!

  318. Jason August 7, 2008 10:45 pm

homey: I don’t mind criticism, but reading through the posts from Sunday, and even today, that’s just vindictiveness. Disagree all you want with pundits, but don’t cross the line. I disagreed with Kiper and Jaworski on Colt, but I still have respect for them — Kiper wavers A LOT, but he’s still better than most of the guys in the business, and Jaworski is usually pretty insightful.

ST… When in Eugene, the Pizza Research Institute is a eating adventure. Its run by a hippie family that has lots of connections to Hawaii. Get the chef’s choice, close your eyes, and eat up.

    1. I can pick you up on my way in to the breakfast call. 6:00 AM on your street ok?

    2. Was that a Cattle Call Convention you attended or what?

I will be listing the meal/pupu/goody potluck items that attendees might voluntarily bring to the Karaoke Call so everyone can see the overall “menu”. Bear in mind that only 15-20 people max. should bring food–so don’t feel you must bring something.

Please email me with your tentative food item or speciality dish (hint, hint). I will list it in the Events calendar section above.

ST on two a days, is the second session a walk thru or a full on practice with hitting, 7×7 or 11×11..

  325. Esme August 7, 2008 11:09 pm

    Whoops, Kekoa caught me. 😀

  326. Jason August 7, 2008 11:12 pm

Kekoa: That would be fine, thanks! I wouldn’t mind earlier, if you wanted to make sure we get there before the 6:30 kickoff. Plus parking, yeah? Looks like plenty Tsaikos going be there. 😀

And it was a math conference, although Madison has a LOT of restaurants. One of the top cities in the nation for most restaurants per capita; some say the most. One list I saw said second, another said third 😀

gigi: I love Thai, I was very sorry to miss the Phuket Thai cattle call. Usually, it’s only tomato-based spicy food that gives me heartburn.

  327. homey August 7, 2008 11:13 pm

Jason – what revenge or hurt do you think these posters are going to do? It’s just words. Again, going back to Frazier, he took a lot of crap that was hurtful to him and his family. How many of us stepped up to the plate in his defense? How many complained of the phrase “huck ferman”? Okay, he deserved most of the criticism but there were some that crossed the line.

To me, the bottom line what the haters are saying is for Kiper and Jaws to eat your words and whop your jaws. That’s all. I’m certain they aren’t going to wait for them in a dark alley and beat them with Colt’s stats.

  328. homey August 7, 2008 11:15 pm

Well, after cleaning one of two fridges and vacuuming the kitchen floor, I’m ready to call it a night.

    G’nite, folks!

  331. Jason August 7, 2008 11:34 pm

Athletic director. Draft pundit. Yeah, I don’t think you can compare criticisms directed toward the two. Herman was incompetent in a very important job; Kiper and Jaworski are “educators” who shared misguided opinions; but at least others can try to counter such opinions by presenting their own — the public can’t decide to overrule an athletic director via popular vote or anything. The impact of the two jobs is very different, I would argue.

I guess it just disappoints me that people on this blog would be so negative. I follow NFL draft talk closely, so I hear that kind of talk all the time everyplace else. Saddens me to think that Tsaikos would talk like that. I thought the people here were better than that. I thought they would let bygones be bygones, and concentrate on the good. Like you said, people get things wrong, so why rub it in their face so viciously? I just thought that lacked the class that most Tsaikos usually share. Those comments were like posts that trolls would make on a Mel Kiper or Ron Jaworski fan site.

  332. Jason August 7, 2008 11:36 pm

After replacing the belt, bag, and filter in our vacuum, I’m ready to call it a night too. 😉

  333. Kekoa August 7, 2008 11:36 pm

Jason ~ I can make it earlier…just thought you might need to rest up your vocal chords for some serious Tsaiko Tscreaming!

How about 05:30 AM. I think they open at 6. Parking on a Sat. morning shouldn’t be bad at all. Da Ceded Lands Mafia Car has priority.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Thanks WarriorMojo for the practice update. It’ll be interesting to see the final starting lineup on both sides of the ball, esp. the QB situation. Off to PT!

  339. Pomai August 8, 2008 1:16 am

Jason the problem I have with the likes of Kiper and Jaws is that they never ever say they where wrong. They make statements on the public airways that affect peoples lives, so they have a responsibility to make things right when they are wrong. One other problem I have with Kiper is that he has never put on a jockstrap so how can he think he knows about the sport. It would be like a person who has never done a math problem criticizing your math skills, would you be ok with that? Saying that I just don’t think that Kiper is expert that he thinks he is.

  340. Ralph August 8, 2008 2:19 am

today we find out that Fonoti is out with a hamstring pull for at least a week, and Leonard with a milder tweak, now we got to hope Soares stays healthy…Our promising Defense won’t get to gel for at least another week or two unless the 2’s and 3’s step up with equal production of the 1’s…

ST were the defense sharing equal reps in 7×7 and 11×11 or the 1’s did most of the work…

  341. Pomai August 8, 2008 2:34 am

Good morning Ralph, up early or didn’t hit the hay yet?

  344. Ralph August 8, 2008 3:38 am

I can post while the system is refreshing, by the time it refreshes I’ll be at work this morning…so, off to bed…

  345. Mike August 8, 2008 4:40 am

Okie dokie, it’s 4:30 a.m. and I’m still fuming about the chicken$hit dickweeds who had my bike towed. I’ll need to assess the damage in good light, but so far it looks like I’ll be suing the company for a severely bent handlebar (which my buddy and I recently installed after much rewiring and re-cabling), a busted fork lock, a dented fork. Come out, come out wherever you are, you ass monkey.

  346. Mike August 8, 2008 4:42 am

And, yes, I do have anger issues. Deep breaths, my patootie.

  347. Mike August 8, 2008 4:46 am

    OK. Happy thoughts.

    Brett Favre is a Jet.
    Herm Edwards isn’t.
    Chad Pennington won’t be.

  348. NYUH August 8, 2008 4:49 am

Funny quote. And bit of the expected backlash. Hope he does well this weekend. Still in Japan so will look forward to any posts.

Today in practice we learned that Colt strained a buttock. Lucky for the training staff Colt’s shit don’t stink so ice and deep tissue massage are pleasurable for all.

  349. Mike August 8, 2008 4:50 am

Whee! I’m gettin’ all sorts of stuff through the filter tonight. But, alas, I’ll need to save my potty mouth for tomorrow’s visit to HR.

Free-play ranting time is pau. Nighty-night, nightowls.

  350. bighilofan2 August 8, 2008 5:25 am

Good morning Tsaikos everywhere. Its Friday, August 8.

Exactly 22 days 1 hour and small change!

  351. Esme August 8, 2008 5:31 am

Mike, jeez, I canNOT believe that crap. Why, why, why? Why would they tow your bike? And it’s obvious it’s a staffer’s — why didn’t the rat just call you instead? Nucking futs!

NYUH, where did that quote come from?!

    Kekoa, I am so there.

  352. Stretch August 8, 2008 5:36 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Hey Mike – why don’t you tell us how you REALLY feel about your bike being towed??!!?? Doing something like that is almost like walking next to a car with a key in hand.

  353. Stretch August 8, 2008 5:37 am

Whoa – good morning Esme!! Nice to see you here bright and early.

  354. bighilofan2 August 8, 2008 5:43 am

    Mike,

The lunacy is evident everywhere. BOE. Airport Security.
The parking lot. Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association.

I not really sure, but i’m thinking the tow Company acted under the authority/protection of the parking lot owner. So maybe, when the HR fails, try small claims against the Tow Company and the HA, subpoena the Tow Company Operator who got the call from the supervisor and have the operator testify at small claims cuz they gotta justify why they took the action and then you’ll get the “identity” the “supervisor” gave to the tow operator who dispatched the tow truck, or the “identity” given to the tow truck driver, depending on how the job went down. Then the real fun can begin. I’m thinking, hostile work environment and management not taking adequate steps to identify the obvious problem in the workplace and taking corrective measures.

All kinds of ways to cook da piglet.

  355. Mike August 8, 2008 5:48 am

Man, it’s so early, it’s not even bright yet.

    Hi Stretch and Esme!

Anyone going to practice today? I would, but I’ve been told by the geniuses upstairs that I’m not allowed to use my motorcycle for work. Phone interviews: Gannett’s sterling commitment to quality journalism.

  356. bighilofan2 August 8, 2008 5:48 am

    Stretch,

never heard it expressed quite like that before. Is that like a real metal key or one of these new plastic models??

  357. Mike August 8, 2008 5:52 am

Thanks BigHilo, good advice. I called the police yesterday, not so much because I actually expected them to do anything since this is a civil matter, but mostly to have a cop hanging around outside the exit door making certain people uncomfortable. On Monday, I’m bringing my bent-up beach bar to the office for show and tell. No smacking people over the head, at least not on the premises. Did I mention that I have anger issues?

  358. bighilofan2 August 8, 2008 5:52 am

The geniuses upstairs all must be retired BOE decision makers. I’m starting to get a really clearer picturer now. I like door #2. Footwork. gotta stay vague. 😀

  359. Mike August 8, 2008 5:57 am

The cop was really nice. He even called the tow company to try and get the name of the “supervisor” for me, but they said the chicken$shit, I mean, “supervisor” didn’t leave a name.

I’m thinking of reactivating my membership with my old boxing gym.

  360. Mike August 8, 2008 5:59 am

Poor Big Bro is going to have to do a lot deleting when he logs on this morning. Of course, he knows all about my sister dropping me on my head when I was a baby. A lifetime excuse.

  361. bighilofan2 August 8, 2008 6:03 am

    Mike Mike Mike.

Anger issues. Now we really gettin down. 😀
I’m lovin it! Da bradda betta leave you a few Cs
an chalk it up as a life’s lesson. Oddawise, get plenny
really neat suggestions for prolem solving dis one. 😆

my personal prolem with officious type peeps is da same kind problem i get with the BOE. Dem no production, mostly seduction. Junk.

  362. Mike August 8, 2008 6:04 am

Hilo, were you at the canoe championships last weekend? I heard it was a mess…

  363. Mike August 8, 2008 6:08 am

Our guys wouldn’t even be qualified to work at the BOE. Wouldn’t know how to spell it.

  364. rage777 August 8, 2008 6:12 am

    Hey Mike,

If you have a damaged disk lock, then you better check that your rotors are still straight and not slightly warped.

  365. Mike August 8, 2008 6:14 am

My favorite Andy Sipowitz line from NYPD Blue: “I find out it was you, you’re taking a beating. Have a swell day.”

    I’m just saying…

  366. jm2375 August 8, 2008 6:14 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

Prince Mike – ok, now take a big deep breath, let it slooowly, one more time. Ok, now go beat somebody up. j/k Can’t believe it. Shouldn’t they at least give you a warning first? At any rate, no excuses for all that damage.

Have a good Friday guys. Watch some Olympics, ok? See ya, gotta go over da mountain to work.

  367. MeiLing August 8, 2008 6:15 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!!!

This is a good day today! I’m officially “retired” from NAU & can get stuff done to move back to Hawai’i. Yay!

When you watch the Olympics opening ceremonies today, Lopez Lomong who is carrying the flag in for the USA is our champion long distance runner from NAU! Amazing story as one of the Lost Boys of Sudan who gained US citizenship last year.

Hope Heun’s back problem gets better & is not critical.

  368. Mike August 8, 2008 6:21 am

    Congratulations, MeiLing!

Lopez Lamong, now that’s a name.

The good news: Met’s win on a walk-off homer. The bad: Mets relievers blow yet another win for Johan Santana (whom I traded for last week in my fantasy league). They’re killing me.

  369. Loa August 8, 2008 6:23 am

    morning gang!

braddah Mike – i feel your pain. i loved nypd blue, too bad they not showing the repeats anymore, i missed the series finale, i think andy took over the squad?

MeiLing – congrats on the retirement

mahalo to all for the camp updates, gotta make it out there one day and do the eye test

have a safe and happy aloha friday

  370. Mike August 8, 2008 6:30 am

‘Sup, Loa! I had to wait a year for TBS to air the rerun of the finale, but it was pretty good. Andy takes over the squad, Medavoy gets the girl (finally) and Bobby’s ghost makes a cameo.

You should try to make it to practice next week when the pads come on…

  371. Loa August 8, 2008 6:43 am

Mike – been meaning to see if i can watch it online somewhere like i did with the soprano’s finale

yep, next week sounds like a good plan

  372. d1島 August 8, 2008 7:04 am

    Great Morning All!

    Mike,
Sorry to hear about the bike. Really disturbing that someone would have that mindset to do this kind of BS; but at least now they’re exposed.

  373. Hawaiianbod August 8, 2008 7:08 am

    Good morning Tsaikos! 🙂

Howzit Mike, Loa and BHF2! 🙂

Mike – give em chit! What that ameba did was BS!! I’d kick his ARSE!

MeiLing – congratulations! The “Welcome” mat is waiting for you in Hawaii.

  374. d1島 August 8, 2008 7:12 am
