Pilares out 3 weeks; closed practices this week

Kealoha Pilares, regarded by the coaches as the Hawai‘i football team’s best all-around offensive threat, has been told he will miss at least three weeks of playing time because of a sprained right foot.
“They said three weeks, but I’m kind of pushing it,” said Pilares, a running back/slotback who hopes to compete in the Nov. 1 road game against Utah State.
Pilares said he suffered the injury to the top part of his right foot in the first quarter of Friday’s game against Boise State.
X-rays did not show a separation of joints, which means the injury can heal without surgery.
He was in a walking boot this morning.
“I’m going to try to do all that I can,” said Pilares, who is relying on ice treatments and elevation to ease the swelling.

Head coach Greg McMackin said he will close practices to the general  public this week in order to install new offensive plays and experiment with personnel changes. The ban is expected to be lifted next week.

* * *

Also, Ryan Mouton, who appeared to have tweaked an ankle during the Boise game, participated in conditioning drills this morning. Mouton  will be held out of practice tomorrow, but will resume workouts Wednesday.

Happy birthday to Kinda Shy, the woman behind The Man. Actually, Kinda Shy is the star of the family.

Dayumit, can we catch a break this year with the injury bug or what? Hope Pilares has a speedy recovery, cause he is the man that makes the offense run so smooth. Seems like once he’s out, the offense goes out of sync.

Ryan Mouton is the man, I don’t know what the “D” would be like without this guy. Hope he’s injury is minor and if he practiced that’s good news. Mouton is NFL material and the best Cornerback we’ve had in years!

  20. Pomai October 20, 2008 11:34 am

Garret I too disagree, there is no reason that you can’t express your thoughts on any subject here, granted it may ruffle a few feathers but there was no reason for the name calling. If we all thought alike what a dull world we would have, plus we would be running a four wide offense just like the other top teams in the pros and college, oh wait we started that didn’t we, I think they called it a system offense.

Tough game; tough medicine to swallow. Most who have commented and placed most of the blame on Funaki, I suspect, have never played the game.

Hawaii’s O line must be one of the weakest, saddest lines I have seen in division I football. These guys are fat and ran out of gas early. Too much eating, not enough road work or running. Huge, hanging guts, with long hair. For a moment there I thought women were playing on the UH O Line.

In the case of the UH receivers, Hawaii has guys who are too scared to hold on to the ball or who are prima donnas, refusing to make that extra effort to reach out for the ball or to fight for the ball. When there do get the ball, then fall down after the first touch.

You can’t win ballgames this way – no matter who your QB is, folks.

Poor Funaki never had a chance. Fat, out of shape linemen; prima donna receivers, too afraid to catch the ball and get hit and too lazy or too afraid to make the extra effort to reach out and fight for the ball, to make something special happen.

Every good QB, no matter at what level he plays, is good because he has a decent line and decent set of receivers. In the case of UH, there is an embarrasing O line and an equally embarrassing bunch of receivers.

Funaki is a good athlete and a very good QB. Too bad he does not have a line and a receiving corps to match his playmaking abilities.

  27. Pauoa Boy October 20, 2008 11:40 am

    Pomai,
So the scores for upcoming games is now ran by my twin sistahs midori7 and UHfan808??? Are we going to start taking scores now or do we need to standby for contest rules and regulations???

  28. Garret October 20, 2008 11:40 am

    WassupDoc,

You made some good points and reminded me that there *are* some political topics that are very relevant here. Anything to do with politics and UH, such as funding for UH (especially for the Athletic Department), Aloha Stadium, Ching Field, etc., is very relevant to be discussed here! And those are political topics that UH fans can all agree on…

  29. Garret October 20, 2008 11:43 am

Really bad news about Pilares…he’s such a valuable part of the offense and really makes a difference on the field. Kealoha, I hope that you get better soon, but please make sure that you listen to the trainers and don’t rush your return because we don’t want you to re-injure yourself and be lost for much longer!

  30. Garret October 20, 2008 11:44 am

Lots of extra reasons for people to attend the game. I hope that 40,000+ show up!

The Waipio Little League world champions and University of Hawaii diver Emma Friesen will be honored during Saturday’s UH football game against Nevada at Aloha Stadium.

Also, Hawaiian Telcom, the game’s sponsor, will distribute 10,000 pompoms and provide prizes for the on-field promotional activities.

  31. Garret October 20, 2008 11:45 am

Nice to hear what Bess’ QB said about Bess’ TD.

(On the touchdown to Davone Bess) – “He did a good job. They actually had eight in coverage on that one too. He ran his route, they had it covered, he uncovered, found a hole, and did a really good job with it.”

  32. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 20, 2008 11:47 am

    helloo tsaikos

    carry over from previous post.

who makes it to the big dance…BSU or Utah?

My bet is on BSU, with a upset of Utah by BYU.

    any thoughts?

  33. Garret October 20, 2008 11:48 am

Tulsa’s QB is doing very, very well…I hope he doesn’t break Colt’s records.

Quarterback Paul Johnson has a passing efficiency rating of 212.8, considerably better than the single-season record of 186.0, set by Hawaii’s Colt Brennan in 2006.

  34. Garret October 20, 2008 11:51 am

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

You know what is funny right now? Because of the BCS rule that only 2 teams from a conference can make it to BCS games (the Big 12 is dominating the top of the BCS), right now both Utah and BSU would be in the BCS! I remember explaining the 2-per-conference rule here last year, but never thought that it would result in such an interesting situation.

If the season ended today, two teams from conferences that don’t receive automatic berths to one of the five BCS bowl games (the so-called non-BCS teams) would get into those major bowls: No. 11 Utah and No. 12 Boise State.

It takes some sifting through the BCS selection rules to arrive at that conclusion, but it starts with the fact that three non-BCS teams are among the top 14 – BYU is 14th – in the standings, which is unprecedented.

A non-BCS team that finishes in the top 12 of the final BCS standings is guaranteed a berth in one of the five major bowls, and there is a good bet at least one team will do that.

But No. 1: If two non-BCS teams are in the top 12, only the higher-ranked team gets an automatic berth. That would seem to give Utah a BCS berth and eliminate Boise State. That is until you read:

But No. 2: Only two teams from a conference can play in a BCS game, and only the top 14 teams are eligible for an at-large berth. At the moment, Texas , Alabama, Penn State, USC, Oklahoma, Georgia, South Florida, Georgia Tech and Utah probably would fill nine of the 10 vacancies. Among the top 14, the only other team eligible for an at-large berth would be Boise State because all the other teams in front of the Broncos are from a conference that already has taken two BCS berths.

Utah versus Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl?

  35. Pauoa Boy October 20, 2008 11:51 am

    Uce5,

I agree somewhat about the OLine being too slow and lazy…often committing stupid personal fouls and holding. They are only good against lesser WAC competition IMO and when faced with the upper echelon teams of the WAC and other conferences look horrendous!

Funaki I agree shouldn’t have been blamed for the Boise St. game to a point. Yes, the OLine looked ridiculous and reminded me of the Sugar Bowl game, but at some points during the game it seemed Funaki lost confidence in himself and was floating balls which were interceptions. He looked either tired, or like he gave up on himself when things went bad. Still though I love Funaki and feel better games are ahead of him. He is playing with tremendous amounts of pressure this year trying to live up to the Colt Brennan days, but he needs to realize that Colt and the Fab 4 are no longer and he doesn’t need to compare. IMO Funaki I feel needs to Believe in himself and his ability and say “F Colt, it’s Inoke Time”. Right now I think he’s trying too hard to live up to the expectations of a special team that is long gone.

The receivers are a disappointment to me. Greg Salas shows flashes here and there but hasn’t been consistent. Malcolm Lane has had some WTF moments catching the ball as well as Washington. To me Mike Washington needs to be replaced at PR, I’ve seen a couple of muffs already and has he gained more than 10 yards on any return yet this season???

  36. Garret October 20, 2008 11:53 am

BSU’s student paper had an article about the game with quotes about UH.

However, this time it was a different story. The 495 yards passing by Brennan. History. Forty passes completed. Yesterday’s news.

“Four receivers went for over 100 yards last year. We had to come out and make a statement,” sophomore safety Jeron Johnson said.

A statement made to the tune of seven sacks and five interceptions.

Instead BSU almost executed the Warriors’ quarterback Inoke Funaki. He seemed to be a tackling dummy for the Broncos all evening.

“If you can pressure the quarterback any time and get in his head and get him rattled and have him wondering where you’re at instead of wondering down the field, it’s going to help,” defensive end Mike T. Williams said.

  37. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 20, 2008 11:55 am

utah vs. bsu in the fiesta…

boooooo i dont want to see that lol.

id much rather see Boise sip on some Southern Comfort and play lets say…hmmmm Georgia or Florida.

I think Boise is the real deal and could very well take on any team from the SEC

  38. Garret October 20, 2008 11:56 am

has he gained more than 10 yards on any return yet this season???

    Pauoa Boy,

According to the states, Mike Washington’s longest punt return of the season was 3 yards!

Check out this page on SportsHawaii that as the stats for WAC returners. Washington has 12 returns for a total of -4 yards! He is #21 among punt returners in the WAC!

  39. King Katonk October 20, 2008 11:57 am

Hats off to Greg Salas who had a good game considering the circumstances. He seems to possess that “never quit” attitude. I agree with you Garret, the loss of Pilares will have a definite effect on the offense. Hope he gets well soon.

Time for Leon Wright-Jackson to step it up and showcase his abilities.

We believe in you LW-J! Take it out on the Wolf Pack.

  40. Garret October 20, 2008 11:58 am

  42. Pauoa Boy October 20, 2008 11:58 am

Enough about Boise State, they were the better team this year hands down…hats off to them and good luck in representing the WAC for a BCS buster team. Kellen Moore, is a good QB for a freshman…he’ll be a handful for UH for the next couple years. Very poised and has a good arm for a Frosh!

  43. Kazz October 20, 2008 11:59 am

Happy Birthday to “Kinda Shy” aka Mrs. Athletic Director and first lady of UH Athletics!!!

  44. Garret October 20, 2008 11:59 am

    King Katonk,

I think that Salas has been playing well–two great catches after deflections last game and he’s made good catches in a lot of games this season. I don’t know if LWJ is going to get much time–it seemed that when Pilares got hurt the coaches turned to Libre and Farmer. I have read that LWJ is playing with an injury, that might be why he’s struggling.

  45. LizKauai [Believer] October 20, 2008 12:01 pm

And congrats to da Princess’ classmate for his good guessing!

  47. J-Dog October 20, 2008 12:03 pm

got a chance to watch last years’ UH vs UW game. The dreadheads really knew how to get the “yards-after-catch”. Saw them turn some completions that looked like no-gainers into 10 yard gains. Just seems like our 07 receiving corps just wanted it more and refused to get taken down.

this year it seems like our receivers take one hit and go down. Only Salas seems to have that extra effort to get extra yards.

  48. SteveM October 20, 2008 12:04 pm

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO KINDA SHY !!!
…the First Lady of UH Sports!

  49. Pauoa Boy October 20, 2008 12:04 pm

    Garret,
That stat line is ridiculous! 12 returns for – 4 yards??? Are you kidding me, can we say it’s time for a change maybe? Yeah you can blame the return team to a point for blocking but whatever I ain’t buying it. I’ve seen a couple muffs, dancing too much and nothing upfield. At this point the special teams needs to help the offense out with as much field position as possible and that is definitely not the way to do it!

  50. Uce5 October 20, 2008 12:04 pm

    Pauoa Boy:

“Funaki I feel needs to Believe in himself and his ability and say “F Colt, it’s Inoke Time”.

Excellent analysis and conclusion. Agreed. No disrespect to CB, but it’s Inoke time!! This is exactly how Inoke needs to start thinking.

I’d like to see some bruisers in the offensive backfield in the next game to replace Pilares and to provide more pass protection. We’ve tried finess running. Now, let’s give smash mouth running a chance. Would also like to see a replacement of the receivers except maybe Salas. Dreaming, of course.

  51. Ronnie October 20, 2008 12:04 pm

Liz – I really liked your limerick on Cooley’s blog 😀

  52. da princess' classmate October 20, 2008 12:06 pm

nevada had a frosh d-end speed rusher that pretty much dominated keoni steinhoff in last year’s contest in the 2nd half, especially in the 4th quarter. i sure hope we have some plan of attack to contain him or we could be in a whole heap of trouble. nevada’s got 2 years worth of revenge on their minds. w/o pilares, it could be an ugly offensive display saturday nite, although we should be attaking reno’s last in the nation pass d. i’m confident in the coaches to do something about that.

even bobby c mentioned one of the receivers has dissappointed him this year, wouldn’t name names but you gotta assume it’s either ML or MW.

when was the last time we were a dog at home against a wac team not named fresno or boise. having a hard time recalling i think you have to go back a looong time.

  53. Kazz October 20, 2008 12:08 pm

    48 Hours have passed-

-As Former Rainbow Warrior Keith Ah-Yuen has said: “You’re never as good as you think you are when you win and you are never as bad as you think you are when you loose”.

-Boise State is a great team but we could have beaten them. No matter, pay already, Nevada next!

-Funaki is still our guy and we must back him up.

-The defense STILL is the best in the WAC considering the challenges they have been pressed with.

-Ron Lee says he is committed to turning the offense around and the last time a UH coach committed to fixing issues we beat a nationally ranked top 25 team on the road.

“Two steps back, THREE steps forward!”

    Pupukahi I holomua!

  54. Ronnie October 20, 2008 12:09 pm

My BCS Buster prediction is that if 2 non-bcs teams make it, the higher ranked team goes to the Fiesta Bowl and the lower ranked team goes to the Orange Bowl (as the at large selection). Is that vague enough 😉

    Uce5,

Yup no disrespect to Colt, but Inoke really needs to get it into his head that it’s his team to run and his time to shine!

Whatever happened to Dustin Blount? Seems like he’s pulled a Houdini this season or am I missing something? Wasn’t he returning punts?

  57. LizKauai [Believer] October 20, 2008 12:10 pm

Haha, Ronnie! Anything for a pic of Cooley! He’s my fave onfield Redskin and, looks like good buddy to rookie Colt!
Speaking of Colt, Ben Folsom from the CurlyR blog says the Colt jerseys are flying off the shelves in the DC area stores. He wants to help Hawaii fans get them. A post about this is coming soon.

I still believe it would be a SHOCK if they allow two non-BCS teams into their country club.

With BSU at 12 and Utah still out of it (I think) UTAH may get the shaft unless Utah is able to beat BYU and TCU (did they play them yet). It would be hard to believe that the conference strength of the MWC is considered equal to that of the WAC.

If Utah and BSU both remain undefeated, UTAH gets in and BSU gets shafted somehow.

  66. HiFlyer October 20, 2008 12:24 pm

    Happy Birthday KInda Shy.

  67. J-Dog October 20, 2008 12:25 pm

I think that a lot of doubters forget that coach Mack had only a few weeks to recruit and bring in players to replace all the talent we lost after 07.

It didn’t help that we lost some recruits because of the uncertainty of the head coaching situation.

I like the areas that we’ve improved on such as securing early committments, as opposed to losing out on recruits becase we didn’t show interest till it was too late.

  68. da princess' classmate October 20, 2008 12:26 pm

utah’s 11 and bsu’s 12. utah controls their destiny especially w/ tough games against da frogs and cougs still coming, although both at home. still see bsu havinga little trouble w/ nevada in reno. i know reno’s d sucks but koepernick (sp??) went wild against them on the blue as a frosh last year.

    don’t think 2 non-bcs teams make it to the dance…but we’ll see

  69. Pauoa Boy October 20, 2008 12:26 pm

    Kazz,

Coach Ron says he is committed to turning the offense around but uh why wait so long to do so is my question? We mid-season already but regardless I give him benefit of the doubt since the QB position took awhile to solidify. Anyway, I would like to see the offense go into more of an attack mode and stop playing so conservatively! I feel we are best when we call plays to get downfield and attack! Our Oline is not good enough for a conservative ball control offense. We know our Defense can hang so why not do some aggresive playcalling on offense and get the ball in the frikkin endzone early and often!

I’d like to see the following in the backfield more, since UH is now without Pilares:

    RBs
Jayson Rego – saw this kid play in high school, good slashing, running style, hard to bring down with one tackler, a bruiser at running back

Mana Lolotai – saw this kid play high school ball, has strong “won’t quit” attitude, would make good power runner, provide needed pass protection

Alasi Toilolo – fits my profile for a big back whose job is to gain five to 10 and punish the dbs while doing it

John Fonoti – same as Alasi

    Receivers
Jeremiah Ostrowski – fast, has heart, a “losing is not an option” attitude, good hands

Viliami Nauahi – fits my profile for guys who are not afraid to catch the ball, run, make contact, and run the ball some more

Paipai Falemalu – same as Viliami

    happy b-day kinda shy!

just saw that the WAC has a new contingency bowl tie-in.

San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl officials announced today that they have signed a contingency agreement with the Western Athletic Conference that impacts the 2008 and 2009 bowl games.

The contract stipulates that if the bowl’s agreement with the Pacific-10 Conference doesn’t yield a bowl eligible team with six or more wins, then the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl will get a team from the Western Athletic Conference.

The bowl’s primary agreement with the Pac-10 calls for the San Diego post-season game to receive the 7th place team. The WAC agreement is activated only if that 7th place Pac-10 team fails to reach the required six wins.

what place pac-10 team does the hawaii bowl get? 6th? 8th? currently the pac-10 has six teams .500 or above.

  78. Pauoa Boy October 20, 2008 12:35 pm

    J-Dog,

You got that right…I think Tony Tuioti is doing a good job so far. Hope he gets a hold of the kid I’ve been raving on up here in my area, since he got forwarded the info and highlights. He’s a RB prospect that would really fit into our system well I believe, but we’ll see. The kid has been offered by some other WAC schools and PAC-10.

Anyway, I think JJ had his favorites and played them extensively which gives this years group a disadvantage with playing time and game reps. Regardless this is a Senior heavy team this year so they should be playing all out every game as it may be there last year to ever play football for most!

  79. lab rat October 20, 2008 12:35 pm

Wasn’t Jovonte projected to be a slot but they moved him to wide receiver because it was easier to learn that position? I think he would be a really good slot. You got to have good slot backs to make this offense work.

  80. da princess' classmate October 20, 2008 12:35 pm

    re: 2 non bcs teams

a lot might depend on this week’s ohio st/penn st game. the acc, pac 10, and big east are getting only 1 each.

big 12 and sec get 2. psu loses and stays ahead of utah and bsu, then the big10 gets 2. who knows, maybe bsu and utah both lose and tulsa and ball state are battling for that non-bcs bid, seen crazier things happen.

  81. Pauoa Boy October 20, 2008 12:39 pm

    Uce5,

Paipai Falemalu is on my list of future favorite Warriors! To me he is definitely going to be an impact player for us on “D”. I know he could’ve played alot this year but with Adam and Solly leaving, he is definitely going to take over!

Miah was impressive during unsupervised workouts earlier this year. I envision great things for him as well.

  82. J-Dog October 20, 2008 12:43 pm

    PB,

I agree. You would think that after riding the pine their whole career, some seniors finally getting their shot would still have that hunger. Anyway, all I know is that there is gonna be a lot of competition for those 2 slot positions opening up next season; and im sure after redshirting for a season, those JC slots are gonna be hungry to perform.

  83. Loa October 20, 2008 12:43 pm

Interesting how top recruits pretty much always just choose BCS conference teams in basketball but go to non-BCS conference teams in basketball.

“It’s a trend,” said Clark Francis, editor and publisher of HoopScoop, a national basketball recruiting service. “[Basketball] players perceive they can get to the NBA from a lower level. Do you need to play at the highest level of competition, or do you go to a smaller school where you are the guy and they focus on you and you get a ton of individual attention?”

The contrast in football is striking. Only three players ranked in Rivals’ top 100 since 2002 are listed to have signed with Division I-A schools from outside the current BCS power structure or Notre Dame. That’s 0.004 percent of the 700 players listed.

  86. Garret October 20, 2008 12:56 pm

It is awesome that NMSU raised so much money for breast cancer research.

First of all kudos to the nearly 22,000 people who proved that they were Tough Enough To Wear Pink on Saturday (included is the crowd from the volleyball game). The Aggie community raised $581,851.90 for the Cowboys for Cancer Research and Tough Enough To Wear Pink campaign. So even though the Aggie football team lost the game not all was lost and in the bigger picture, the lasting effect from the $581,851 will last much longer than the outcome of the Saturday night’s game.

  87. Garret October 20, 2008 12:59 pm

Interesting that Mack said that Inoke will *not* play the entire game against Nevada and that a “pure passer” would get time at QB. I’m guessing that means that Alexander will get some playing time.

    LES MURAKAMI STADIUM UPDATE

Well not really, but I caught the UH Baseball Alumni game and the HWB game between the Waikiki Beachboys and the Honolulu Sharks and since they are only partially completed with installing the new seats, only the lower level (formerly “blue” section) was open and I must say…

    WOW!!! 😯

Those new seats are AWESOME!!! They are a dark green made with what seems like solid ABS plastic with ventilation slots in the back and cupholders in the back of every seat for the row behind them to use. They installed cupholders along the walls and the guard rails for those sitting in the front row.

They look awesome and the whole stadium will really look beautiful when it is complete.

  90. Garret October 20, 2008 1:10 pm

    Kazz,

Mack said that during his press conference today. The “pure passer” will receive “significant” playing time vs. Nevada.

  91. George Bush October 20, 2008 1:15 pm

“Interesting how top recruits pretty much always just choose BCS conference teams in basketball but go to non-BCS conference teams in basketball.”

    That’s something I would say.

  92. FloridaTed October 20, 2008 1:15 pm

Well, halleluya, let Funaki start the game and then, after the opponent makes the usual halftime adjustments, bring in the change-up reliever. That just might work.

    Garret,

Is the press conference excerpted on the Hawaii Athletics site?

  93. 808flowmaster October 20, 2008 1:21 pm

I really think Alexander should start and take a majority of snaps. He has the arm for this offense. He can get it downfield and throw the long out. He has great height, and I think he just needs the 1st team reps and game time.

That said, I still think we should use Inoke here and there during the game — specifically in 3rd and short and goal line situations. Kind of how Tebow was used at Florida his freshman year. That way, we take advantage of his athletic ability without having to rely on his arm the whole game.

Finally rested up from the trip to spudland. Had a great time hanging out with the Tsaiko contingent that made the trip. Great to meet C-Cut, djmitcho, D1’s #1 son, and CRW for the first time.

The team looked really relaxed at the hotel. I ran into Cal Lee in the elevator and told him the same thing. He said “I hope not too relaxed.” Well, the WARRIORS went out and fought hard the first 2 quarters. Unfortunately, we all know what happened on the opening drive of Q3 and BSU never looked back. The team seems to lose its intensity at halftime. Don’t know if it’s conditioning or what. BUT, they certainly can play straight up with BSU.

Most of the fans were okay, except for one elderly man (70’s or so) who appeared under the curse of screw-top wine who made a crude comment when we parked the car, and a younger one after the game commenting really loud to his buddy “Man, it’s gonna be a long ride home for them.” Too bad I didn’t say “No longer than the ride back from Hawaii last year.”

Not sure if it was D1 or Stretch that commented on the fan support out there. Lots of folks wearing BSU attire in the community. Saw a Ford Bronco painted in BSU colors, complete w/ logos.

Overall, it was a great experience and the smurf turf is really impressive in person.

  101. Kazz October 20, 2008 1:47 pm

Did anyone else have a hard time trying to decide off the menu Midori posted?

At first I went with Steak and Eggs, then I saw they had pancakes, then I normally don’t like loco mocos but with Portuguese Sausage?!?!?!!? NOW YOU TALKIN’!

  102. Esme October 20, 2008 1:49 pm

    Hey, gang…

So I posted this on Friday, but it was minutes before the game, so I am guessing only a few people saw it. So I’ll post it one last time. And then I’ll shut up about it.

Hey, gangies! How is everyone doing?

I’ve been a bad Tsaiko for being absent so much … *slaps wrist … bad! very bad!* …

But I swear I have an excuse (you can decide if it’s a good one).

Up to now I’ve been hesitating to talk on the blog about it much, but I’ve decided now that since it’s for a good cause, I’ll just post this public service announcement, and hopefully ST won’t hate or smu me for it. *waving madly to ST*

My excuse is I’ve been deep in rehearsals for the …

    Gridiron !!!

The Gridiron is a play put on each year by people in local media — personalities from TV, newspaper, radio, magazines and public relations — as a fundraiser for scholarships and internships sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists. The show is a hilariously cockeyed, satirical musical that lampoons local news events from the past year. (I won’t spoil all the surprises, but I WILL say that there is one number in there that takes a pretty good jab at … JJ.) (Oops!)(Oh, and I get to be a UH cheerleader in that one. Haha. As if. Remember: This is ACTING.)

Right off the top of my head, some personalities you might easily recognize who are performing or emceeing in the show include Jody Leong, Keoki Kerr, Justin Cruz, Mahealani Richardson, Ben Guiterrez, Cathy Foy, Howard Dicus, Gina Mangieri, Minna Sugimoto, Paul Drewes, Denby Fawcett and others.

The reason I finally decided to talk a little bit about this project is … it IS a good cause — the money supports the next generation of journalists (the new wave of Stephens — yay!) (And, uh, Esmes … yikes).

The other reason is that we’ve got one show that still has a lot of tickets left, so I hope if you’ve got time, you can swing by and support the program. I promise you will laugh and laugh and laugh!

    • The schedule:

8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24 (mostly sold out; a few tickets left)
3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 (ample tickets left)
8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 (mostly sold out; a few tickets left)
    Diamond Head Theatre

    “Super good tickets” – $65
    “Really good tickets” – $45

(If you’ve been in DHT before, you know the house is actually small enough that almost any seat is a good one.)

    • Also, on Thursday, Oct. 23, there is a 7 p.m. “preview” showing that is sort of like a glorified dress rehearsal/dry run, where the public is invited. Tickets are at the door only on a first-come, first-served basis for $25 apiece. (Warning: People usually start lining up from 6 p.m. for preview night, since it’s a cheaper night, so come early.)

Regular ticket sales are being handled by Honolulu Box Office, 550-8457. Email at info@honoluluboxoffice.com.

I hope at least some Tsaikos can come. As I said, I promise you will laugh your behind off. Also, you will get to see me in some really humiliating costumes. And it’s all for a good cause.

OK, I’m out! E-mail me at enii at honoluluadvertiser .com if you’ve got questions.

    Tsaiko Nation! Arrrooooo!

(Yep, I had too much coffee today.)

I think that was against Montana. She had a brace on her ankle and her knee heavily wrapped up and both injuries on the same leg. Plus looked like she could have had a slight concussion too.

  115. Esme October 20, 2008 2:11 pm

James, the Friday show has only precious few tickets left, but please do come if you can! And if you can’t get tickets for Friday, I would recommend the Thursday night show. It’s actually technically a dress rehearsal, but it’s open to the public and it should be pretty good.

I promise it’s gonna be a riot. I actually finally had a chance to see the whole show from start to end for the first time yesterday (up to now all the numbers had their own separate rehearsals) … and even in its rough stage, with no costumes, I was laughing so hard I actually cried. 😀

  116. Esme October 20, 2008 2:13 pm

  121. Mrs. A-House October 20, 2008 2:34 pm

    To Inoke Funaki –

I give thanks that you are our quarterback! Only you know and understand the emotions that you go through as you anticipate the start of a game and the tremendous pressure of executing whatever plays the coach calls throughout the game. Only you know how well your body absorbs the pain as you get hit again and again. Only you know if your head clears well enough after solid hits by opposing defenders or the hard turf. Only you know and understand how, as a quarterback, you enjoyed the accolades heaped upon you after a stunning win, and only you feel your own anguish and disappointment after a crushing loss.

That being said, I want you to know, and I hope that you can feel the continuous love and support of loyal fans who genuinely appreciate just how tough it is to not only don the Warrior uniform, but also keep academically solid thoughout the season. (end)

I choose not to point fingers at ANY football player who some may deem to not be performing well. In my opinion, this is unfair and demeaning to fine young men who have been recruited for their athletic skills and are tested week after week throughout the season and challenged to do their best (win or lose).

I am committed to enjoying the rest of the season…game by game…win or lose…post season or no post season. That being said, I want to thank Coach Mack, the coaching staff, and EVERY ONE of the Warriors for representing proudly in the finest fashion… before, NOW and in the future.
    Imua Warriors!

  122. Ronnie October 20, 2008 2:37 pm

do you know if the d-end that played well against us in the 4th quarter last year (caused graunke’s fumble in 4th qtr) against nevada is starting this year…

  142. wafan October 20, 2008 3:00 pm

Geez. Pilares out for three weeks that is not a good thing. Time to unleash Rego?

    wtf?
    ….Wonderful That Family 🙂

  144. al October 20, 2008 3:01 pm

are we to see jayson rego and farmer a bit more these days.

what if libre went to slotback?

what if ostrowski was taken off the redshirt list? he still got 4 years and you know he can catch the ball. he may not run 4.5 but he is shifty.

    ryan henry off the redshirt?

    santos? hmmm.

okay, i am just half making light of the situation and half guessing. i still like funaki, i would definitely take him to war with me. definitely.

  149. Ronnie October 20, 2008 3:06 pm

    Mrs. A-House,

I think I’m recovered from Boise. 🙂 I’ve decided that I’m going to that game until we win on the smurf turf – at least twice 😀 It was much easier to be at Boise than Fresno, but maybe that’s because we haven’t won at Boise…

I can’t wait until the last game of the season. My boys and I are coming home for that one! We get to finally go to a Tsaiko-gate (since I missed it last year).

  150. (Jesse) James October 20, 2008 3:07 pm

Mrs. A-House…been in Florida for the past two weeks…glad to be back home….and thanks for the welcome back.

    Thanks al and d1…..

Too bad about Pilares…that’s gonna hurt the offense…ouch…

Happy B-Day to Kinda Shy, who isn’t really shy once you get to know her, but is shy initially…..

Esme, will see if I can make it…have a lot of work to catch up on…unfortunately, work doesn’t stop while you’re away….boo hoo….

al….actually I like sunny side up on my fried rice…..over-easy is too well cooked for me…mwahahahahahha

Can’t wait to see everyone again on Saturday at the T-Gate….

Where did you see the stuff from the Monday press conference?

  152. al October 20, 2008 3:11 pm

wafan……one can hold a block for only so long. if no one is open or cannot find one open wr what is a lineman to do?

i don’t think it is all the olinemen’s fault that we are being hurried or sacked. the whole offense including the coordinator needs to take ownership for this.

something is not working and every man needs to take care of business.

  153. 3-Prong October 20, 2008 3:12 pm

ST: What’s the scoop with Graunke? Is it really his hand that is keeping him down on the chart? Things are not adding up.

  154. d1島 October 20, 2008 3:13 pm

    wafan,
Mack has stated that the players who they feel give them the best chance to win will play each week.
I take that as a statement of the quality of the available players. 😐

  155. Mrs. A-House October 20, 2008 3:14 pm

    Wafan –

Hi Wafan ! Doing great…how about you! Still waiting to get up close and personal with you. Hope that doesn’t scare you. Just want to give you a lil’ hug/kiss. T-gate?…if can, can, if no can, that’s ok…maybe next year.

  156. Mrs. A-House October 20, 2008 3:16 pm

  157. d1島 October 20, 2008 3:18 pm

    mih,
At one point, I thought that would have been a good idea as well. Not so sure now when I see how many ways Mouton makes such a difference on Defense.
Can the team really afford for Mouton to get himself “gassed” (or even injured) on offense?

  165. wafan October 20, 2008 3:26 pm

    al . . .

Not blaming the players and when I re-read what I wrote, I guess it does appear I am blaming the players. I agree with you that a person can block only so long. But, if they are not able to hold their blocks — for whatever reason — then things have to change. If not the players then the philosophy or technique or plays or what? But it is not necessarily the players that need to change. Rather some sort of change must be made. I wonder what it might be?

    d1 . . .

I was thinking the same thing. It is a concern if these are the best we have. I am sure they are good players. It looks like there is a big drop-off from our starters to our reserves. That may or may not be true; but it sure looks like it.

In any case, something is not right. I do not know what it is. I sure hope the coaches do! And, I hope they can fix it!!!

The mind picture I get about the A-Houses.

They sit absolutely silently in the same room with smiles, frowns, and assorted emotions flashing across their faces as they “speak” with each other on the blog.

Do they even remember how the others sound?

Perhaps they read the notes on the communal refrigerator door and post their responses thereon.

  176. Mrs. A-House October 20, 2008 3:36 pm

Wassup Rich! My gratitude and appreciation to you, also, for wading into BS enemy territory to represent along with Ronnie and Stretch, djmitcho and Chawan_cut. Fun, yah, to cc together away from home turf. In Kissimee, FL, (first game cc) we forgot for the moment that we were thousands of miles from home, but nevertheless enjoyed tremendously the warmth, comraderie and ono grinds with dear friends. My best to Margo!

  180. Rich2176 October 20, 2008 3:41 pm

Mrs. A-House – Everyone but Stretch and I were the TRUE WARRIORS in the stands. Although the box provided an amazing perspective of the game, we couldn’t really yell and cheer too loudly. However, my deepest thanks to JD for his graciousness.

Also, everyone that went to the SWAMP should receive some kind of award for surviving that hostile territory.

  181. chawan_cut October 20, 2008 3:42 pm

Hey, forgot to thank you and #2 son for also venturing into BS enemy territory to represent. Nice that you both enjoyed together…father/son bonding is special. Hi to Mrs. D1…see you Saturday? hope so…

  183. chawan_cut October 20, 2008 3:48 pm

    rich2176,
the fans weren’t very hostile, as soon as they started winning, heh. nah, they were all nice. they couldn’t believe we flew all the way there to watch the game. funny coming from them. they’re as hardcore as you can get. i bet if they ever dared to play a game as far away as hawaii that they’d all make the reverse trip.
the hostile thing out there was the humidity. we got so lucky during the game that it wasn’t as hot as it was the days prior and after. walking around disneyworld was not fun. good thing for under armour and their special shirts.

  184. Mrs. A-House October 20, 2008 3:48 pm

    Chawan_cut –

And how are you holding out…cold, yah. Couple more weeks to go? My hand is over my heart as I thank you for serving our country by doing a splendid job on your TDY out-of-state. I owe you, so really looking forward to seeing you on-island again. Take care and keep warm…

  185. Mrs. A-House October 20, 2008 3:53 pm

    Rich2176 –

Agree with Chawan_cut. The Florida fans were surprisingly cordial and kind to us. Perhaps it was out of respect for two senior citizen Hawaii fans sweating like the dickens, trying to survive the once-in-a-lifetime (at least for us) exerience of being at Da Swamp. One of my most haunting memories is watching one of our group munching on a roasted, fall-off-da-bone juicy turkey leg that Midori7 was too late to get us for lunch. Sold out. Dang! I guess you could say the game itself was forgettable, but the experience of being there was definitely not!

  200. Garret October 20, 2008 4:17 pm

Some quotes from Mac’s press conference.

    On the quarterback position…

The quarterback…(gets) too much credit when he is successful and gets ridiculed when he isn’t. It wasn’t all Inokes’s (Funaki) problem. He got hit when he threw one ball, there was a wrong route run another time, it’s a team game so it’s not all on his back. He’s won two big games for us and was throwing the ball well in the first half, but give Boise State credit too because they made some great plays too. It’s a combination of things and we’re going to work hard to get it worked out. There are eleven guys out there, it’s a team game, and we win and lose as a team. Even though the quarterback is a glory position it’s not all on his back.

  201. Garret October 20, 2008 4:18 pm

<blockquoteOn the team’s lack of scoring in the second half:

I think we got conservative because we we’re trying to win a couple of the ball games and move the clock. I think you can do that against certain teams, but for the next games we’re going to have to open things up and move the ball. We also are going to have to get better on protection and not give up on turnovers and receiver routes.

  202. Garret October 20, 2008 4:18 pm

    On this week’s opponent, Nevada…

Nevada has an excellent offense. They’re second in the country in running the football. They have a quarterback and a running back that are outstanding and their offensive line is back from last year.

  203. Mrs. A-House October 20, 2008 4:20 pm

I agree that Rego needs to see the ball now that Pilares is out. LWJ and Libre are still banged up…and we need a guy who can tough out the yards-after-catch. Wonder why Rego is not playing more, what happened?

  206. Pauoa Boy October 20, 2008 4:28 pm

    Dan-O,

Hisatake at one point was competing for a starting job at one of the Tackle spots, then next thing I know he is Houdini and poof he’s gone. Wonder what the heo is going on? If he cannot play on the OLine put him back on D in the DT rotation so he can contribute. To me he’s a wasted talent!

  207. Pauoa Boy October 20, 2008 4:29 pm

    Niners – ??? Owner(s) is an absolute buffoon! 🙁

Good riddance to Mike Nolan. Congrats to Singletary; can’t wait to see if he’s really head coaching material. Can’t wait for the day the Yorks are gone. Any Tsai-kos with enough money to buy the team? Please, I’ll chip in $100. 😉

Speaking of chipping in, thanks to Stephen for “treating” me to lunch today at Nā Koa. And thanks to Stephen for taking back the $15 (after a lot of back and forth trading).

Pauoa Boy: For me, it’s $60 this year for twenty regular-season games and two exhibitions. Doesn’t include the Rainbow Classic.

My prayers for the Obama household. Our political differences aside, that’s a tough time for anyone. My Grandma played a huge role in my youth as well before she passed when I was 9, so I can understand Sen. Obama wanting to come back to spend some time with her.

    Mrs. A House

    RE: Pilares

It sounds like Kealoha Pilares has a grade 2 ankle sprain which is a partial tearing of the ligament. A three week recovery time sounds about right. Some people heal faster depending on your genetic makeup and your diet. Most players with ankle sprains are able to return in 2-3 weeks depending on the severity of the sprain.

In Graunke case, I’m afraid I might have been right. Its very difficult for a quarterback to return with a injured wrist.

I’m going to re-post my last weeks comments regarding Graunke injury.

Wrist injuries in my experience take a long time to heal. Graunke could possibly have a scaphoid fracture which account for 60% of wrist fractures. The scaphoid bone is one of 8 carpal bones in the wrist. Wrist fractures can be difficult to diagnose. If it is a scaphoid fracture, it has a hard time to heal due to the anatomy of the blood supply to the bone. The blood supply is what keeps the bone alive and allows it to heal. I hope its not a wrist fracture.
The best case scenario would be a moderate to severe wrist sprain with a healing prognosis of 6-10 weeks.

I want to make sure everyone understand my assessment on Graunke is only my hunch. I did not examine Tyler nor am I qualified to make this diagnosis. UH has an excellent Medical Staff and they are doing their best for the team. An accurate diagnosis is much more difficult than people think. Because of a law in patient confidentialty we are not always hearing the condition of the players. In my opinion, a wrist injury to his throwing hand is one of the worst injuries you can have for a quarterback. A strong healthy wrist is very important in the mechanics of throwing a football. Its very difficult to compensate using other muscles and throwing an accurate pass with an injured wrist.

I actually am in possession of some really good tickets for Saturday’s game.
We’ll have giveaways Wednesday and Friday, OK?

  224. Stephen Tsai October 20, 2008 5:47 pm

I might have stated this before, but I think some people are holding out hope that somebody — Tyler Graunke? — is going to come in and serve as the savior.
    That’s not happening.
There are plans to shake things up — pretty good plans, actually — but they don’t involve Graunke.
While we all like Tyler, right now he is No. 5 on the depth chart.

  225. Ronnie October 20, 2008 5:52 pm

Ryan Grice-Mullins played his first game this past week!

B.C. Lions head coach and general manager Wally Buono liked the work of new import receiver Ryan Grice-Mullen in his debut in a B.C. uniform. Grice-Mullen, who got the import spot vacated by Logan, caught three passes for 52 yards. “He made a few mistakes, but he played fast and handled himself well,” was Buono’s comment.

jm2375…I was actually in Tampa. The weather was pretty humid, like 94 – 95% every day I was there although tempearatures were in the mid 80s it felt worse. The day I left, the nightime temps were dropping to mid sixties and humidity to about 90%. It was pretty fun though, although parts of the city seemed really dead during the week. Got to hang out a bit with some friends who also attended the conference so that was cool. It was a working trip so not a lot of play time but nice to get away for a bit…although I’m really happy to be home now…

Its very difficult to compensate using other muscles and throwing an accurate pass with an injured wrist.

These are the kind of educated opinions that help in getting things back into perspective as opposed to jumping to conclusions as to why things are the way they are.

PB your comment about JJ not giving a lot of peeps PT resulting in a depth without a lot of experience is happening with coach mac this season. He says he will be rotating a lot of players in the game, but if you review your tapes, same peeps on the o and d line. maybe a reason we don’t often see mana, alasi, leatigaga, hisatake and a bunch of others hyped to seeing pt this season. not looking at special teams although it is a very important part of the game.

Every single one of you guys is so good-looking and macho to the max, but Kealoha Pilares…don’t want to embarrass you, but a lot of ladies (myself at the front of the line) would give our eye teeth for beautiful eyes like yours with those oh-so-long, thick eyelashes. You lucky buggah! 😎

    Evening Tsai-kos!

    *stepping on to da soapbox*
Ahem. *tap tap tap* Testing 1 2 3…

First of all, I must apologize to those that I accused of being bandwagon fans who in actuality weren’t.

That being said, I respectfully request that before anyone posts a “vent” or any type of post, please do the following things in order:
    1. Take a deep breath and count to 10
    2. Compose your post
    3. Repeat step 1
    4. Review your post – give me an inkling that you are not a bandwagon fan or a flamer. Please make sure that if all you are doing is criticizing the team that it is CONSTRUCTIVE criticism.
    5. Repeat steps 3 & 4
    6. Repeat step 5 as many times as necessary until you are calm
    7. Click on “Submit Comment”

Since I have been reading this blog, I have learned a lot about football from our esteemed students of the game (eg pride, Jason, Garret, kazz, and many others). I would much rather read their well-reasoned analyses of the game than some rant from people who I’ve never heard of before. Their passion for the game and for the team comes through in their writings.

    Thank you for listening.
We now return you to your regular programming.

    *steps off soapbox*

  270. brew808 October 20, 2008 8:19 pm

More 49er info: Ray Ratto – won’t be attending any parties held by the Yorks….

Nolan has been a toe in search of a tag since the end of last season. His flaws have been examined in minute detail, and his gifts do not measure favorably by comparison. This day was coming. It simply makes no sense to having it come Monday, unless you recognize that the 49ers don’t do anything through planning. It’s knee meets jerk, time and again.

So York decided, reflexively and with no discernible strategy save getting out of the line of fire, that Nolan had finished serving the purpose for which he had been hired. York couldn’t wait one more week, when a firing would have made sense. He had to do it now, because … well, just because.

And “just because” is not a good reason to do anything. Even something that makes people momentarily happy.

    😯 😀

  271. jm2375 October 20, 2008 8:20 pm

Uhhhh, Kekoa, how do you hold your breath and spit at the same time? 😆 🙄

What is interesting in reading the many messages is that there are still calls for the other QBs especially when things don’t go “Colt like” for Mr. Funaki.

There are calls for Graunke because he understand the R&S best or Alexander because he’s tall and can see over the line or Rausch because he’s the best pure passer. They may be all of that of what is being said of them but maybe they are all lacking in an intangible that Mr. Funaki demonstrates: leadership. He may not be the tallest, throw the ball the farthest or understand the R&S as well as the others, but if can lead, maybe, just maybe Mr. Funaki maybe the best we have at the moment to get us to where we want to be until we can find another who would be “Colt like” who was tall enough, could throw far enough, understands the R&S and above all can command a team and lead.

Mr. Funaki is not “Colt like” but he has that something and we as fans need to support the continuing growth of that intangible and maybe, just maybe he’ll show us that someone who is not tall enough, who doesn’t have a cannon arm or doesn’t fully understand the intricate moves of the R&S can lead, inspire and take us to some victories we do all so much want to see the team achieve.

    Hi all!

Have a great time at the game this weekend! Cheer for me…cheer loud as I will be across the big water in big “D” finding me a good steak, no oysters, to gnaw on before I watch the Cowboys….win? Either way it will be a great experience!

OK Mrs. A-House…I understand about paying for the pay-per-view but it doesn’t come with the camraderie and fun of watching with a room full of Tsaikos! How about part of the game?

Rich: Yeah, I was thinking the same thing about you not really having to brave it amongst the nice, but condescending fans of Boise. They really think that they are better than us. Ronnie told me of the hateful things they say on their boards about us being the worst fans in the country. I guess they haven’t been to a Fresno game! At least their fans I can take, they can’t be condescending since we’ve beaten them at their place, but then again they don’t have that cheatin’ blue turf. No other conference is going to stand for that. How is that good sportsmanship…I’m intimidated by it…or at least that’s what I will say since that tool Dooley said that about our ha’a and it got us penalized. Oh wait, Fresno played the perfect game, no penalties…and not win! Ronnie even told me about the Boise band marching while the Hawaii team was doing the ha’a…the nerve!

Kekoa: Are you, Pops, and Diana going to the tvgate @ Therapy?

I would offer my helmet as a prize, but NO I ain’t crazy and I am going to get it autographed at the Na Koa banquet in December. Ronnie and I were thinking that we needed one long table that seats twenty so that we can all be together and that they should put us near the team. Ronnie offered that we would be okay with the small round tables but put them side-by-side so that we can rotate seating arrangements and be able to socialize with each other. Any thoughts?

OK maybe just wishful thinking. Wow long rambling post…sorry about that. Just had to get it out of my system before I leave and am not on very much. I’m not lucky enough to have an iphone yet.

    Good night all and

    GO WARRIORS!

P.S. ST did Mack remember about my hubby or did you gently remind him? Either way thanks for sharing that!

NY Jets fans are sure bidding like crazy for those personal seat licenses!

Online bidding went as high as $65,100 per seat through the first two days of the team’s unprecedented auction of 2,000 personal seat licenses. The PSLs are in the Coaches Club — located near the 50-yard line and behind the Jets’ bench — in the new Meadowlands stadium, scheduled to open in 2010.

Fans can specify which seats they want to bid on through the online ticketing Web site StubHub. The public auction, which started Sunday and runs through Oct. 27, marks the first time a U.S. sports team has done so with PSLs.

“We continue to be pleased with the level of activity and interest in the auction,” said Bruce Speight, the Jets’ senior director of media relations.

The online event was kicked off at an auction preview party last Thursday at The Four Seasons restaurant in Manhattan, where the winning bid for a pair of PSLs on the 50-yard line was $200,000 per seat.

The auction’s first day yielded its top two winning bids, with fans shelling out $65,100 and $61,100 per seat. The top bid Monday was $55,100 per seat, with the next highest $38,100 per seat.

Winning bidders will also have to pay $700 for each Jets game ticket. They will have the opportunity to leave their seats in the stands and watch the game from a railed-off section of the field 5 yards behind the Jets’ bench, or from a bar and lounge area directly behind them.

It might sound crazy, but I think it would be bad for Oklahoma State to get ahead by too much in the first half when they play Texas. I can imagine that they would start having flashbacks to past games. I can still remember when Oklahoma State was up 35-7 and Texas won 56-35!

Texas coach Mack Brown is 10-0 against Oklahoma State and the Longhorns are 20-2 against the Cowboys heading into Saturday’s clash between the No. 1 Longhorns and No. 7 OSU in Austin. But Texas has made a habit of needing massive comebacks against OSU – including a 38-35 victory last season on a last-second field goal after trailing by 21 entering the fourth quarter. In 2005, UT trailed, 28-9, before scoring 38 unanswered points to win. In 2004, UT won 56-35 after trailing 35-7, the biggest comeback in school history.

I think people need to stop giving up so easily on Funaki. Did we give up on Colt when he threw 5 against Ints against Idaho and 4 against SJSU last year? Its the quarterback merry go round that I think hurt them early on. Besides, though I haven’t been able to watch the game,I heard some had been miscommunication and that’s probably because this unit has not been together like colt and his receiving corps in years before.

Look, who would have ever though we would have a chance to be in the Hawaii Bowl. We can’t expect perfection all the time and we got to enjoy the sight of a young team growing before our eyes. You can see the improvement. After the disastrous road trip early on, they came back to beat Fresno on their home field and kept with Boise on theirs. Most people including me early on thought they had no chance and would take a drubbing.

We need to give our support to Funaki and this young offense.

    Al

Actually, Dereck’s Grandmother contacted me. She is an old friend of my Pops. She asked if Dereck might have a shot at playing for UH. Aside from his size, speed, and LB skills, he carries a high grade point average.

I was a bit surprised when she said that he had not been contacted, because I always thought the kid was a good prospect. That’s why I asked if you had any conflicting info on him.

I’ll pass him on to Tony T. to check on. The kid’s going into the Navy if someone doesn’t come calling…thing is, he can’t swim!

    Nah, I’m just kidding!

West Virginia allows their citizens to vote early, which is a good test for the new and hopefully “improved” touch-screen voting machines. Unfortunately, there are at 6 six reported cases of the machine switching the votes–the voter choose the Democratic candidate and the machine switched his/her vote to the Republican candidate. There may have been other cases, but if people didn’t check over their ballots they wouldn’t know about the problem. There are no reported cases yet of a vote for a Republican being switched to the Democratic candidate. Unfortunately, those voting machines have had a LOT of problems around the country already and are STILL going to be used for the upcoming election.

Just know that when Coach Mac and the rest of the Coaches focus on something it gets done. I have no doubt in my mind that the boys will be ready and fired for this game. I no doubt that they will work on the things that need to be worked on.

I haven’t given up on Inoke and think that he can definitely do the job if he’s given time to go through his reads and if he and the WRs are in sync. However, after the last game I posted that I *am* worried about the cumulative effect on the hits that he takes when he is in the pocket plus the hits he takes on runs (options, bootlegs, scrambles, etc.). I worry that other teams will take BSU’s strategy of hitting Inoke as often as possible to try to decrease his effectiveness as the game goes along…in fact, before the game I predicted BSU would do that.

I just threw out an idea over the weekend about how maybe Inoke could get a break for a play here or there and someone like Alexander or Rausch or even a RB could take the snap. One of the backup QBs could have a limited set of plays to run and be really good at those few plays to give Inoke a break. Or, a RB could take a direct snap like so many college and even pro teams are doing now.

I’m very curious about the new offensive variation that UH will install for the Nevada game. The coaches did a great job in adjusting the offense for Inoke, and I’m guessing they will do a great job with these new changes…and the surprise factor will help the Warriors in this critical game vs. Nevada. I’m sure that they have much better ideas about the changes needed, as they know a lot more than me about the game and their players.

The ref actually follows the South Carolina quarterback like a Linebacker and tackles him. What the heck was the ref thinking about? Imagine if this was an game changing play that go derailed because of this. The amazing part is the ref wasn’t disciplined. Next they will be intercepting passes and running it in for a TD.

Poidog in Sportshawaii’s forum wrote this in response to HawaiianHogster, which I thought did very well in explaining one of the critical differences between this year’s RnS versus the past few years and why we are having difficulties in the passing game. Thought I’d share it with all of you.

    HawaiianHogster wrote:

I remember JJ saying that the R & S is set up for quick passes to counter blitzes yet you want to keep blaming the o-line for all this debacle.

    Poidog wrote:

the key word there is blitzes.

when your right tackle gets bullrushed into the QB by the opposing defensive end, yeah you blame the O-line. you can’t counter a blitz if it isn’t a blitz. it seems that a common misconception is that pressure on a QB is always the result of a blitz. a blitz is when a linebacker or a defensive back attempts to rush into the backfield. the thing is, we are having trouble just blocking the d-linemen! the quick passes you speak of are when there’s a receiver open right away because a defender vacated his area to rush the qb. but what happens if the back 7 or 8 are playing pass coverage and the only pressure is from the D-line? in those cases, the O-line is supposed to give the QB and the receivers enough time to exploit the defense, which is what we are not getting right now. and to make things wore, every time the defensive line gets upfield and collapses the pocket the passing lanes that are usually created by the o-line are just not there which creates a big visibility problem especially for a shorter QB like Funaki.

Rob25 – I’ve got a picture of how close the BSU band was to the players when they perfomed the ha’a. Kinda disrespectful.

I just created a google picasa account today and willl post some albums of calf calls and other photos.

Buffoman – like I said from the Fresno trip – the amount of respect that Inoke received from his team mates was amazing when he joined them in the hotel lobby. I can’t describe it, but those guys would give every last ounce of blood for him.

Great first half. Too bad they couldn’t put the second half together. Funaki did ok considering non support from receivers and O-line. BS palyed the second half much to my expectations. Squeeze the run and make Funaki throw. Disappointing to see the O-line getting bullrushed so easily. Maybve that’s why Mc is holding auditions to get true Warriors on the first tetam.
We’ll definitely see a new team this week.

just read Tsai’s Tuesday warrior notes-Steinhoff was warned twice by line judge that he is not lined properly allowing him to adjust and preventing the warriors from being penalized for offsides. and he is called for another improper alignment for 5 yard penalty, what gives with Steinhoff? I’m surprised the ref didn’t simply flag him for 3 infractions. A two year starter has to be smarter than this, is he hedging for a bull rush from BSU #83 or #93 DE that pancaked him onto Inoke as seen on Monday’s sports cast.

  369. Ralph October 21, 2008 2:04 am

what took coach Mac and Malloe so long to realize that we weren’t gaining any yardage on punt returns…12 returns for minus 4 yards, not counting the number of punts Washington let bounce along its merry way…

    Ralph,

Agree wicchu on #368 and #369; mid season adjustments are definitely needed.

Dennis Green is now a professor at San Diego State!

The College of Business Administration at San Diego State University (SDSU) announced today that former National Football League head coach, Dennis Green, has begun teaching the SDSU Sports Business Management MBA program’s Strategic Management (BA703) course which has been offered during fall 2008 semester.

Some comments from Rolo to BC.
    re: Mack’s comments
We’re a passing team…We’re gonna have to throw the ball to win; it’s what we all want to do.

    re: GA in BOI game
He’s made a little bit more progress…did some mature things…there was urgency…went thru progressions…..got to his 4th progression….#2 guy by not a very wide margin….

    re: BR
He’s probably gotten the short end of the stick…he’s being a good teammate…been in the weight room, is over 200 #

Agree with your concerns. On point. Swap em if need be. Cumulative effect of getting pounded will wear any person down. This being said, of all the QBs available, I would take Funaki into battle with me before I would take any of the others.

Kind of too late now to do to the O Line what needs to be done. For next year, the coaches should run the O Line hard. Two miles a day to begin with, every day except Sunday. Three miles a day everyday during regular season, followed by sprints. Five sprints across the entire field, every day, before and after practice. We need guys who can go full speed for six quarters. If our guys can do this during practices, then they can and will go full speed for four quarters with relative ease, without slumping over, hands on hips, gasping for breath.

We have big guys. All we need to do is to get them into better shape than their competitors. We have been too soft on these guys, as well as the rest of the team with regards to conditioning. UH needs to institute a program involving more running. Weight room training appears to be sufficient. We just need the entire team to do more road work. The lack of road work, for the entire team, is apparent. Our guys keep running out of gas early, there is no explosive burst after the initial contact, and guys fall down after the first touch.

In football if you are more fit than your opponent, nine out of 10 times you will beat your opponent.

Our O Line and Receivers are just not fit to the point where they are regularly and routinely beating their opponents, one on one and as a team. More important than personnel changes at this point, UH needs to understand that the fundamental flaw in its approach is in conditioning. All that off season running does pay off.

You know? I’m wondering if Mac and Ron will have different packages each of the QBacks. Maybe GA or BR will come in with their own set of receivers and rb to run a few plays to give Inoke a break from time to time.
