Picture perfect

The past couple years, the Warriors have relied on the man upstairs.

At every practice, Kenny Cheong is on the portable platform, 25 feet above ground, videoing every football drill.

When the coaches talk about having to review “the film,” they’re talking about the work of Cheong, as well as the other student members of video coordinator Dory Kong’s crew. When Chris Naeole speaks of the “eye in the sky,” well, two of them belong to Cheong.

The job is not for someone suffering from acrophobia or ergophobia. It requires working during training camp’s humidity, autumn’s rain, and in dawn’s early light. Imagine standing at the edge of a high board, for two hours, without a bathroom break. Cheong did that every practice, and he did it well and professionally (on quarters-per-hour compensation).

Cheong is set to graduate on Dec. 19. He will be missed.

The video does not lie.

    Former Bruin?

  3. cheepono December 2, 2015 9:10 am

    emphasis on “former”

  4. Stephen Tsai December 2, 2015 9:17 am

Well, Naeole used to help coach him back in the day.

  5. DoubleB December 2, 2015 9:18 am

Ulu-Perry would be very nice. He would need his release though.

  6. leron December 2, 2015 9:30 am

A reverse exodus of top Hawaii-born recruits now that Rolo is back would be amazing. Maybe more people want to be Simba.

  8. Jeezy33 December 2, 2015 9:37 am

  9. islandman December 2, 2015 9:37 am

Hope the safety experts checked out the portable platform.

tsai do u know if Kamuela Borden left for his mormon mission already? im hoping he gets back by the 2017 season

  11. DoubleB December 2, 2015 9:47 am

Jeezy33 #6 True. Hope this is the start of some of the local boys looking with an eye back home.
I’m also hopeful NR’s visits last night were fruitful. 🙂

  12. BigWave96744 December 2, 2015 9:53 am

Yes Kamuela Borden left a few days before the last game. I think he’s headed to do his mission in Oregon (if I remember correctly)

  13. Jeezy33 December 2, 2015 9:55 am

    12. I’m hoping Rolo adds 2 good local high school coaches to boost up the local recruiting asap. Between Rod York, Vae Tata, Fred Salanoa… 2 of those would be really good. Salanoa isn’t a big name, but he’s really smart and had a prolific college career

  14. BigWave96744 December 2, 2015 9:56 am

FYI Reeve Koehler is set to graduate from Arkansas in the spring and would have 2 to play 2

  15. DoubleB December 2, 2015 10:00 am

#15, that would be nice, but I don’t think Reeve is coming back. Seems like he’s happy at Arkansas.

Football God and Scouting Expert Jeezy: God. Shut up. I wasn’t even talking to you. I make a general statement, you get butthurt. I contradict one of the crazy things you tend to say, and not even in an insulting way ,you get butthurt and amp at people.

Relax, Football God. Not everyone is out to get you.

  20. boolakanaka December 2, 2015 10:09 am

Fred Salanoa would be a great pickup, but my Halawa sources say, his family wants him around more, and being a strong Mormon, he wants to be more active in the church.

If Ulu-Perry is still interested in playing football, would be great for him to join the warriors. Would be nice to know if those coaches named by Jeezy are actually interested in the job.. adding one or two of them coaches mentioned above I think would be great for our program.

  23. DoubleB December 2, 2015 10:16 am

17, Jeezy33 you should count your blessings. I made the mistake of saying a statement he made was ignorant. He wrote an 11 paragraph response. Wow.

Come on Man! – Everyone is allowed an opinion. No need to tell people to “Shut Up” just skip his posts. I like reading his posts. You obviously do not. Skip his posts and move on.

  24. jeezy33 December 2, 2015 10:17 am

    21. Bummer. I think he would make a great QB coach. Plus I want Hawaii to somehow get Ace Faumui.

“17, Jeezy33 you should count your blessings. I made the mistake of saying a statement he made was ignorant. He wrote an 11 paragraph response. Wow.”

thanks for addressing the content of that post. you really made a bang up argument!

” Everyone is allowed an opinion.”

therefore i’m expressing my own in response to it. who says i’m saying nobody can have an opinion? but when people say wacky things, i like to ask about why they think the way they do.

are you saying i’m NOT allowed to do that?

am i NOT allowed to have an opinion?

    Football God Jeezy, help me!

  26. BrandonB December 2, 2015 10:21 am

Long time lurker, here. Jeezy can get pretty obnoxious. Come, On Man! can sometimes go the same route. He’s usually not as inflamatory though. I like both of them posting. It makes the blog fun to read.

#32 Now that you’ve mentioned that, Holy BS!

  35. boolakanaka December 2, 2015 10:40 am

Jeezy my actual preference is Tata: he has a proven record with recruits, and would work well in both poly and nonpoly households alike. That said, I know he is already beloved on the North Shore.

  36. DoubleB December 2, 2015 10:42 am

32, Wow, “Chicken Grease”, I have been off this Blog for over a year ( started reading again after NC was let go ) but I do remember “Chicken Grease”. Blast from the past. I do remember him being a poster I would “skip” over. 🙂

    … if this hasn’t been posted …

The University of Hawaii will receive a $750,000 guarantee to play Cal in the inaugural Sydney College Football Cup Aug. 27 in Australia, according to terms of the contract.

In addition, the promoter, TLA Worldwide of Australia, will cover all UH travel and accommodation costs for a 200-member Rainbow Warrior party, according to a copy of the agreement released by UH.

Accommodations will be for “up to six nights.”

UH is due to receive an initial payment of $187,500 on Jan. 15, 2016. A second payment is due 30 days prior to the event, with the balance coming within 15 days of the completion of the game.

  44. Come on, man! December 2, 2015 11:23 am

warriorny: no idea who chicken grease is. sorry.

when i respond to posts, itʻs almost never a personal thing, even if people take it personally. for example, when people go “the run and shoot is dead because defenses ʻcaught upʻ to it,” i think thatʻs an extremely bizarre statement. so i ask why they think that way. what specifically about the run and shoot, schematically, has been countered by the defense that makes the run and shoot dead?

nobody can answer. then they get mad because they get contradicted. jeezy tends to get super riled up if anyone disagrees with him.

but i disagree and ask because i like to hear people justify their opinions whether theyʻre wacky or make really good sense.

so take the example of Football God Jeezy. Jeezy says things that make a lot of sense, even though he talks like heʻs John Madden himself and the King of Player Scouting.

Jeezy also says things that donʻt make sense. for example, pat hill being qb god. or run and shoot being outdated. or whatever. and thatʻs fine. thatʻs why i question. like “why do you think this? or are you making this up?”

itʻs not personal even if it can be construed that way. i have no idea what doubleb was talking about but it was the same way as well. but nobody seems to respond. they just get mad and dismiss things with handwaving.

Haka, when winning seem okay to be done, when losing looks out of place due to one’s ignorance to the meaning of the dance.

Why not have an introduction of a dance that will reflect more of our Hawaii and it cultural life style. A manly and a short dance that depicts courage, respect, the Aina, etc.

As I understand many of these Polynesian dances have deep meaning behind them. Any dance that is used should have a message and meaning explained in detailed so that all of Hawaii can relate to it.

Even if you disagree with his opinions, his insight is a valuable and welcomed addition to this blog. Chicken Grease? The only poster who referred to himself in the third person. I hope he’s okay.

For the last few years, one of the major weaknesses of the team has been the O-line. Since we’re keeping the same coach, I guess it’s going to be the same as usual. No blocking and no QB protection. Some mentioned the blocking for Harris, but, I believe, it was Harris’s ability to see cracks in the defense, not the blocking. This was especially true, when Harris went out in the last game.

Don’t understand the negative concerns about choosing Rolo as the main man because he has only been a coordinator without head coaching experience. There has been a bunch of NCAAF head coaching vacancies announced recently where the main man only has coordinator on the resume and no head coaching experience. Someone said that every single head coach in college got their first start without being a main man. Wishing Rolo all the best, like what he is saying and most of all the guy loves University of Hawaii football.

For the last few years, one of the major weaknesses of the team has been the O-line. Since we’re keeping the same coach, I guess it’s going to be the same as usual.

Not necessarily. Naeole played for several OCs in the NFL (including Mike McCarthy) & probably just as many blocking schemes. I don’t think he favors any 1 approach.

As Chow’s OL coach, he implemented whatever the HC or OC wanted. Did he have his own ideas, suggestions? Were they heeded, implemented & failed? Don’t know.

But I think all holdovers entitled to new slate. It’ll be up to Rolo to develop, implement or adapt schemes best suited to his players and staff.

  76. z December 2, 2015 5:11 pm

I thought that our oline was young and in rebuilding mode. They did get better through out the season. I think they will be better next year.

ST.. Thanks for the confirmation about Brian Smith NOT being the OC

  79. leron December 2, 2015 5:27 pm

#62 I think O Line is much improved and is still young. They only lose Clarke, who played almost the whole season with a broken foot, which he suffered in the Ohio State game. Harris wouldn’t be able to get all those yards without help upfront. In the New Mexico game, he had 117 yards and Lakalaka just missed a hundred with 96. Dejon Allen is conference honorable mention will only be a junior next year. Watch carefully. Many of Harris’ long runs came with #50 leading the way. The line has slowly taken on Naeole’s personality and keeping him was the right thing to do.

  80. islandman December 2, 2015 5:44 pm

So who does Carnac the magnificent (Stephen) say will be the OC ?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnac_the_Magnificent

  81. Derek December 2, 2015 6:19 pm

I don’t care who the OC is. A lot of programs score a lot of points who have good coordinators and have good offensive minds. Rolo will find somebody. I’m more concerned on the defensive side of the ball. We have to be able to stop the run first and get off the field and/or cause more turnovers. Our turnover ratio is one of the worst in the nation. That can’t happen if we want to have a winning program. Again, it always go back to Rolovich as to who he selects. He’s a smart guy. He’ll figure it out. He know how bad we were the last 4 years. Let him do his job.

Side note- happy for Dino barbers, too bad he won’t ever coach at Hawaii. Is a great coach and seems to be a good guy

I don’t think I can wait till January for a OC. The suspense is killing me. I have some crazy ideas for who it should be. I have said one of them before(Steve starkisan). One can dream. The talk of June jones as OC is silly and it should stop. Vavae Tata needs to be on the staff in some capacity. I like Brian Smith, happy he is back as the RB coach

  85. Natsuko December 2, 2015 8:04 pm

Tonight on 1500am Rolo said the delay in announcing a staff is partly relates to UH hiring protocol. Said he thinks majority of his staff will be in place next week.

My fren told me once that we should build the stadium inside of diamond Head. Imagine that? That’s pride rock. Can c it now. Pride Rock would b alive.

So Nick Rolovich addresses the standing room only crowd during halftime at the Arkansas-Pine Bluff game with a short speech, then just when he is about to exit the court, the back-up emcee of the halftime festivities encourages him to shoot a three.

    Rolovich air balls.

    The emcee ruined the moment.

He should have just let Coach Rolovich gracefully walk off the hardwood.

  91. Maddog50 December 3, 2015 4:42 am

Thanks Kenny for your hard work and effort. Few people know what it is to attend practice and perform a duty day in and day out. Thanks and best wishes to you in future endeavors-on another note great to see NR doing community contact work. Whether it be students or general public it is what occurs in most places. What the video pitch by him and reminded me again of Barry Alvarez when he said better get your season tickets now! How prophetic-the coaches will matter the schemes will matter but above all the talent cures all ills. I for one see great strides by the OL which again will have only 2 Seniors on it. I think there maybe 2 or 3 guys who can help but need at least 2 more contributors that can do it now enough of this JC redshirt stuff. A few receivers have talent but will have to be deprogrammed from the false sense that they are anything special-you are only special when you get open and can catch whatever is thrown your way. John Ursua all reports say he could be special-D needs a total overhaul and infusion. Very optimistic! Play Warrior!!!

  92. Warrior fan December 3, 2015 6:27 am

We need to get a good DC to coach these kids up. Our defense over the past couple years have been repeatedly beat on 3rd and long plays, long passes in general, unable to stop the run, unable to force any turnovers as well…

  93. Shoko December 3, 2015 6:54 am

A few days ago I hear Sonny Dykes interviewing for the Missouri job and today I hear Jeff Tedford resigns as coach of the BC Lions. Not trying to put two and two together (okay, maybe I am) but there is speculation that Tedford might be interested “in going back to cali”, which could have ramifications next year for the Warrior opening game against them and perhaps for a certain local recruit that accepted an offer to play there.

  94. Shoko December 3, 2015 6:56 am

Wouldn’t be surprised JJ throws his hat in the ring for that job. He’s probably had aspirations coaching in the PAC12 for awhile.
