Pass contest begins

The competition for the next UH starting quarterback begins today with team and position meetings this morning, and a light practice this afternoon.

Shane Austin, a fifth-year senior who is 1-0 as a starter (over San Jose State in 2009), and David Graves, a third-year sophomore, are the competitors.

Quarterback Bryant Moniz was upbeat entering this morning’s surgery for a fractured fibula in his right ankle. Moniz, who is taking a hula class, mused: “It’s going to be hard to get ready for Merrie Monarch now.”

The recover period is between four and six weeks.

Nevada’s Cody Fajardo was named the WAC’s Offensive Player of the Week.

Two years ago, he was on the Warriors’ evaluation list, but was not recruited.

As reported this morning, there is growing concern about the Warriors’ lagging attendance. One teeny omission: UH is now getting moolah from student fees. It doesn’t translate to more bottoms in the seats, but it does helps the bottom line

Kudos to Kevin, Pomai, and Duffer, for doing what you do for UH Athletics in general, and Wahine Softball in particular!!!

  9. Garret November 14, 2011 7:35 am

The student fees were supposed to plug the existing deficit that UHAD had. If attendance declines, either budget cuts or increasing the student fees will be required to cover for it.

It should also be noted that this decreased attendance is counting all the students that get into the game for free…that means that paid attendance is down more than what is indicated in the article today.

  10. Stephen Tsai November 14, 2011 7:35 am

On the one hand, most thought UH would be 8-2 at this point.

On the other hand, Fresno State and Tulane are key opponents for the Warriors.

When the schedule was set, the WAC had hoped the Fresno State-UH game would be for the league title.

And that’s why they play the games, as they say.

  11. Garret November 14, 2011 7:35 am

I don’t like the idea of Austin and Graves getting equal reps in practice this week and the coaches putting off a decision on a starter until game day. The coaches should make a decision (you know, a DECISION) early in the week about who they believe gives UH the best chance to win, and arrange for that QB to get maximum reps with the starting receivers.

That will maximize the likelihood of the chosen starter being physically ready and mentally prepared for the game. Moreover the team will benefit from having a specific individual to rally around.

Putting off a decision means the preparation work will be less focused and the team will spend the week grappling with uncertainty. This is fundamental leadership stuff and it’s mystifying to me that the coaches don’t grasp it.

    HawaiiMongoose,

I agree what you say, it makes perfect sense. Whatever QB is chosen to start will need as much reps as possible to get ready for Fresno. Neither QB has had close to the reps that Moniz had, so every practice rep is crucial.

However, I think that the criticism may be unwarranted. The UH coaches say that Austin and Graves will be “splitting” reps, but they have not emphasized that they will be getting “equal” reps. Who says that the coaches have not actually decided on which QB will start and will be giving that QB the majority of the reps? Austin and Graves are *very* different types of QBs, so forcing Fresno State to prepare for both of them is good for UH and will hurt Fresno State’s defensive preparation under their new DC.

So, it is quite possible that the QB “competition” will be over by Tuesday and the team will have time to rally behind the QB chosen to lead them against Fresno State. We should not assume that the coaches cannot make a decision, that would be like not being able to decide on a play and then being called for a penalty or burning a timeout…

  12. Garret November 14, 2011 7:37 am

I indicated last week that I thought that UH would lose to Nevada and then would beat Fresno State and Tulane. I hope the 2nd and 3rd parts of that prediction are true…that would clinch the winning season and Hawaii Bowl spot and would make for a good crowd at the BYU game.

  13. Stephen Tsai November 14, 2011 7:40 am

You have to include part of the student fees toward ticket revenue or else UH then took an automatic line-item cut because it would have gone from the budget including a minimal ticket income from students ($3 or $5 per ticket) to zero.

  14. Stephen Tsai November 14, 2011 7:42 am

UH won’t be putting off a decision.

It will be putting off an announcement.

  15. letsgowarriors November 14, 2011 7:43 am

did we burn KVA’s redshirt? or is hawaiiathletics.com game participation wrong and it was Lolotai in the game?

  16. Stephen Tsai November 14, 2011 7:45 am

Unless there is a significant separation between the quarteracks, there are a few lines of thought:

    • Because of his experience, Austin could start and, if he struggles, Graves would be available for relief.

ª Because of Austin’s experiencing coming off the bench, he could retain the closer’s role.

  17. Garret November 14, 2011 7:48 am

It is interesting that the gamblers seem to be betting heavily on UH this week. The line started with UH being a 4 point favorite over Fresno State, and the line now has UH as a 5.5 point favorite.

Last week the line actually opened as Nevada being a 13 point favorite, then moved to 15 after the gamblers bet heavily on Nevada early in the week. That means that the gamblers that bet heavily on Nevada early in the week actually covered the spread and won. Now the early gamblers evaluated both teams and are picking UH over Fresno State…I hope they are correct.

Fajardo was the L.A. Times player of the year in which he took Servite High to the California state championship. There is loads of talent in the CIF Pac 5 division. In fact, out of the top 25 high school teams in SoCal nearly half of them are from this league. UH would do well to focus their recruiting on those schools.

Haven’t been to Aloha Stadium since last year’s Hawaii Bowl. Quick question, and I apologize in advance for my ignorance:

Is alcohol allowed in the parking lot during pre-game tailgating? I remember during the Hawaii Bowl they were really cracking down, with police in “Liquor Enforcement” jackets. But my friend who has been attending games all season this year says that people are openly drinking during tailgating time and he hasn’t seen any of those Liquor Enforcement jacketed police.

    Which is it?

    TONIGHT. 11PM.

THAT IS COLLEGE SPORTS AT ITS FINEST.

A TRUE home court advantage for UH for once!!!! The ENTIRE lower bowl is fill to capacity with hundreds of students and those willing to make it out for such a unique game atmosphere.

    I CANNOT WAIT!!!

  76. Kevin November 14, 2011 9:54 am

Coach Gib has a new contract and if we get things going tonight on national TV, it would suit UH right if they POUNCE all over the men’s basketball season and push this thing to the moon.

Where there is concern and disenchantment in one area, now is the time to STRIKE gold elsewhere.

UH should capitalize and exploit those that feel “miffed” about the football season at this point and should really push men’s basketball. It sounds “sneaky” but that’s how it is.

  83. Kevin November 14, 2011 10:15 am

    Pono,

We should consider the recruiting situation for what it is. As a head coach is almost wrapping up his second to last year of his deal with no clear vision of the future until the end of this season, recruiting will take a hit.

Earlier I said retaining or not retaining Mack was the least of my concerns for this reason amongst many. That last home game and subsequent short comings over the past two years put the rubber stamp on my personal view about retaining him or not so now a decision has to be made.

BUT alas, we know it will be decided upon AFTER December 3rd at the earliest.

The funny part is that I have been just as guilty as most

in calling for Mack’s job. But on second thought, he is a

great person, and I would definitely miss him if he left.

I think I’m starting to get soft with my old age.

If he got better at making quick decisions and stop making

lame excuses, I would still support him despite his Coaching

    performance.

That being said, I feel it would be wise for both him, and UH

to offer about half of what he currently makes, with performance

    Bonuses.

  91. Kevin November 14, 2011 11:43 am

    What is the issue here?

    The shortcomings or the salary?

I find it odd and worrisome I some are inclined to accept what has happened this far if Mack’s salary wasn’t in the seven figure range.

Whether it’s 1.1 million dollars a year or 100,000.00 a year, the results are the SAME. Numerous national television blowouts, odd positional substitutions, questionable attention to development of depth at positions, etc…

The problem is NOT the salary price tag.

It’s the tax payer money. Yours and mine.

We can all have an opinion, and interest in where it’s going. Look around, is it fiscally responsible to keep it at that level?

I’m just as disatisfied as anyone else, but the $ makes it worse. Just stating my opinion. My second thought is based on the fact that the next may be worse than Mack.

    That is all.

  94. Kevin November 14, 2011 11:50 am

Bob Nash was an outstanding individual and a real gentleman.. VERY rare in today’s sport’s world.

Met him NUMEROUS times and he always treated me and others with as much respect as anyone else.

Much like Coach Mack, I cannot recall how many times I passed him in the halls or on the way up to watch practice and he’d greet people or acknowledge them in kind.

But enough was enough. basketball support was down as as a revenue sport, that was just unacceptable after a while and now football revenue is at serious risk which ultimately equates to ALL of UH athletics at financial risk.

    No can already.

I have been ranting for years about how the heat and sun-in-the-face scenario from the well-intentioned (but ignorant bonehead) 5:00 pm starts for 2 years sent many people (mostly seniors) to PPV heaven. I even managed to slide over to 50 yard line seats since the section vacated.

Study the SA graph and see the trend when you identify the year the 5:00 pm start began and the sunsequent years. How were season ticket sales, especially on the mauka side, the following years?

Then this year…6:00 pm start is better, but note how many earlier starts we have at home due to TV. I suppose you can blame TV for the lack of attendance. But I would not blame falling attendance solely on the team performance. Administrative haplessness is a contributing factor.

I agree with Steve M…The earlier starts, pay per view, and our tough economy have affected our football attendance. It doesn’t help that life-long parking problems continue to dampen the football experience at “No Aloha”.

Coaching is a big part of the success in winning and losing when the calibar of competition is equal. Looking at this year’s results it could be stated that UH’s coaching staff has been out coached. If UH had the athletes like the top schools in the BCS conferences coaching and winning would be a lot easier. No problem winning the WAC with average coaching ability or less than average coaching ability.

Whatever direction UH takes by continuing with the current HC or hiring a new HC, the question and direction that needs to be answered is what results do they want as a football program? Do they want UH to be a top 20 program each year or continue to be what they have been for the last 30 plus years?

If so spell it out and commit the dollars, the faclities and action to that plan of being a top 20 team year in and year out. Or just state we will do our best to continue what strides that has been taken over the last 30 plus years. If the latter no matter who the HC is at UH the results will continue to mirror the last 30 plus years. Coaches will win and will lose and the good ones will leave for better opportunities. The opposites, will be given assistance to leave for better opportunities.

We had an opportunity when Tomey was hired back in the 70’s and when Jones was coaching. However the institution did not take the opportunity to upgrade with the success on the field. It is a back and forth kind of thing to create and maintain a top program. Winning on the field is not the only ingredient. It will also take the best of facilities and the continuance of money and more money to come in through all sources. These areas are lacking and until we upgrade things off the field any coach at UH will have the same results and problems that have existed over the last 30 plus years.

  105. huh? November 14, 2011 12:42 pm

If we were undefeated or 9-1 and if we played with efficiency.

Had we played with calculating precision in our game management.

We would have 40K plus every home game regardless of economy, ppv, or early game times. It’s what a good program commands.

I am afraid we have taken one step forward and two steps backwards for the past few years. Before any get on my case, I am not hanging this on the student/athletes of this program. They are out there busting their behinds week after week. But, they are equipped with the “tools” to become a consistent winner.

Hang this on the direction or misdirection this program has spiraled down to.

  106. A.M. November 14, 2011 12:44 pm

I’m with you Bowwar (on both #99 & 100). If the fair weather fans (including sportswriters) promote the program as much as they do grumbling & ripping about it, a positive contribution can be made to helping the recruiting effort & making the program better each year.

  108. LizKauai November 14, 2011 12:48 pm

Adding to SteveM’s discussion- I bought my season ticket on the Makai side. Can’t handle the sun any more.

And I bought my plane tickets several months ago when the fares were relatively reasonable. Hawaiian has a virtual monopoly because Go/Mokulele has been unreliable schedule-wise. Suggestions that extra sections be offered to enable neighbor islanders to get to the game and go home the same night fell on deaf ears.

If not for the kokua hospitality of fellow Tsai-kos, it would be impossible for me to attend any games at all and my $$ would be best spent in sports bars to watch the games on Kauai.

It’s not easy to be a Warrior fan today.

But we just do what we gotta do.

    GO WARRIORS!

  109. J November 14, 2011 12:51 pm

PPV will affect not only current game attendance; but for another generation as well. If potential fans can’t see the product, how will they be enticed to attend and experience it in person?

I grew up with a parent who always said, “No one is paying us to watch.” So no exposure to UH sports via attendance. What did get me to the stadium, Klum, etc…? Being able to watch games on TV because that was free. Staying up for the delayed broadcast on Saturday nights for football and praying for it to be soldout so it would be shown live.

Simple, I was introduced to the product and then paid for it by attending games later. I had to ask other relatives to take me to the games with them. Then later, when I was legal to drive, I got my friends to go too.

Every now and then, UH needs to toss a freebie game into the mix. Think of it as one long commercial for the program as well as the university. They need to grow their fanbase and not just try to figure out how to squeeze more funds from their already loyal fans.

  118. Hoohiki November 14, 2011 1:20 pm

I think Coach Mack will resign before he gets fired. And Rolovich and Aranda will follow. They’ll find another team that has a bigger budget, has better facilities, more administration support, and most of all, better fans!

If they leave, who do you think would grovel to come here to all you adoring fans? June Jones (he didn’t want to be here, remember?)? Norm Chow (hah!)? Are you guys hoping for the Punahou Mafia to intervene? How about the recruits? Honestly, after the support they get on this blog, I don’t see why all the big time local recruits don’t stay home. Remember Timmy Chang (Boooo!)? Oh, yeah, and then there was last week when it was Mighty Mo’s turn. I don’t think any of you fair weather fans deserve any time on this blog or a football program to “support”.

  119. A.M. November 14, 2011 1:22 pm

UH was 10-2 going into the last game of 2010 season. Attendance at that last game: 37820 (nowhere near 50000 unfortunately).

  120. expat November 14, 2011 1:24 pm

Oregon State is currently 2-8. They have one home win (against 2-8 Arizona). Their home loses so far have been Sacramento State, UCLA, BYU, and Stanford. Sac State is 4-6.

Attendance has yet to dip below 40K at Reser Stadium. Mike Riley is generally considered a good coach with a good staff.

There are some things about our coaching staff that frustrate the heck out of me. What do I know though? Coaching is a hard business. June Jones had two losing season out of nine. There were two pretty magical seasons, but especially in 2007 there was a lot of luck involved. Most of the time though we were a 9-10 win team, which is to say a 3 to 5 loss team.

McMackin will have three years that look about the same at around 50% and one pretty good year at 10 wins. That compares pretty favorably with our Div 1A history.

  121. funny November 14, 2011 1:25 pm

@118 – Mack, Rolo and Aranda have no market value to any program with a bigger budget than UH. In fact, Mack would be a fool to walk away from his remaining contract because any future head coaching prospects rest on much lower competitive levels and any D1 prospects will likely be as a DC, not a HC.

  122. A.M. November 14, 2011 1:32 pm

    POMAI #121

It’s all about winning with our type of fans…

To a certain extent, Pomai, you are correct. But our typical fans, assuming a 13-0 or 14-0 record, will complain that we are not playing USC, Alabama, Florida, Texas, Michigan etc, and when we do, complain that we are not beating them!

And the typical fan doesn’t contribute to any of the groups like Na Koa (well, maybe a $1 or two) but expect us to be “big time”.

  131. AlaWai November 14, 2011 1:58 pm

Our fans are quitters. They don’t focus. They don’t perform in the stands like a 12th man. They complain about the sun, the rain, the prices, and the team. They make lame excuses for not showing up to support their team. They cause dissension and disruption. They gave up on the season and are letting down their team mates. The answer is to fire the fans and hire a new group.

  134. Pomai November 14, 2011 2:01 pm

Both UH and Coach Mack are kind of between the rock and the hard place with this deal.

    1. UH – If they get rid of Mack what then they will not be able to get any experienced Head coach for the amount of money they want to pay (400,000 or less) if they do hire someone for that money it will be an up and coming OC/DC so you have to kiss a few season goodbye while he builds his team and knowledge, hard to do with our fans.

    3. Coach Mack – If he doesn’t get his extension he will retire because he will not find another HC job for that kind of money (1mil to 800G) He could possibly find a DC job for a lot less.

Not any easy solution to the whole thing, one way or the other fans will suffer.

The problem with many Hawaii “fans” is that they too often try to validate themselves by how well the team does. These fans somehow feel that the team’s success is a direct reflection of their own existence or self-worth. If the team is a winner, the team’s fans must also be winners. These fans want to bask in that winning glow.

On the other hand if the team loses, suddenly it’s “Hawaii sucks!”. These fans do not want to be seen supporting a losing team for fear that other people will think they are losers. Kind of pathetic really, but I think this is a large part of why so many kids want to play on the mainland. “Wow, you must be somebody since you play for Colorado or Washington.” “Wow, you must be nobody since you play for UH.”

Remember how horrible our attendance was for most of 2007? It was only when people realized the Warriors might be on the verge of something special that suddenly EVERYONE wanted to be a UH fan. We sold out the last few games and stormed the field twice. Where are those people now?

who’s to say a coaching change will be a bust or take the program to a higher level? no one can predict the future, just gotta go with the flow. just gotta support one way or the other.

  155. Buffoman November 14, 2011 2:37 pm

#124 You are probably correct. The interesting thing about your assessment is that if that kind of winning occurred, you’d still have more “buns in seat”. And yes, the complaining will continue. But they would have paid to complain.

#131 The current situation is currently doing what you’re suggesting. “Fans are being fired”. The bad thing is that no one is replacing them. Seats are still empty as there is not a crop of new fand willing to buy the old product.

That, is the puzzling predicament the UH finds itself in at the moment. Likeable, friendly does not appear to translate into buns in seat like consistent winning.

If coach does leave, on his own or otherwise, a good look at winning coaches at D-II or D-III who may be looking to step up may not be a bad moves, as opposed to seeing if there are miles left in another old coaches tank. I believe that folks like Chip Kelly once were at a lower division school.

  156. Ipu Man November 14, 2011 2:37 pm

A lot of people can’t go to games because they are dirt poor.

Some are too busy with two or three jobs and too tired to

try to squeeze in a trip to the stadium. I supposed most die

hard fans are the poor in this state…(probably enough to fill

up the stadium) but unfortunalely they

cannot afford to attend the game. Also some are handicap

or taking 24/7 care of someone… So please don’t knock fans

who can’t come. Occupy Bishop Street with your game complaints.

#155, UNLV’s coach came from a FCS school (Montana) wher he was a big winner

Except for his wins over Hawaii and CSU, he pretty much is stuck in quicksand.

Less than two years and a “Fire Bobby Hauk” movement has started among the few remaining Rebel fans

Sometimes those FCS masterminds don’t pan out too well

    Re #148 and #156

Don’t know if you were referring to my #147, but it’s absolutely not war on Warrior fans day for me. I’m just pointing out that the mentality of Hawaii fans needs to change if we are to have a sustainable program.

Every time I see one of the “fans” post about how “Hawaii sucks” or so and so is a “wasted scholie”, I freaking cringe. This mind set that certain fans will only support the team when the team wins is pathetic. Don’t just wait to eat the finished product. Help MAKE it. Help FINISH it. If you live in Hawaii, you have a direct personal interest in athletic and academic success at UH, even if you and your family never went to school there.

Mike Sanford is to UNLV what Von Ap was to UH and N Turner was to the Redskins

the wrong choice at the wrong time

    Rasu Begasu, lol.

Bryson, i think it is just people voicing their opinions rather than negativity. it just depends on one’s perspective on the subject. while some may see it as being negative for wanting the coach to be fired, others see it as being negative in keeping the status quo.

Continue having positive thoughts gang. Think healing thoughts for our injured Warriors. Think healing thoughts for our entire football program. Think healing thoughts for all of mankind. Think healing thoughts for mother earth. We all need healing from the everyday trials and disappointments. Lift our chin up, put our shoulders back, put a smile on our face, and say to ourselves with conviction, we have a great football team, we play with passion and enthusiasm. Ke Akua will watch over us and guide us. We will be in the Hawaii bowl. We expect to be in the Hawaii bowl. Think and act in a positive manner.

    If…

If you can keep your head when all about you

    Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

    But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,

Or, being hated, don’t give way to hating,

    And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;

    If you can dream – and not make dreams your master;

    If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with triumph and disaster

    And treat those two imposters just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,

    And stoop and build ’em up with worn out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings

    And never breath a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

    Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on”;

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

    Or walk with kings – nor lose the common touch;

    If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;

    If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run –

Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,

And – which is more – you’ll be a Man my son!

    Go Warriors!

I hope UH holds on to Mack for at least one more year. Mack’s luck taking over has been just awful… 2008 – QB situation(from Graunke to Inoke to Alexander to Rausch) and an inexperienced offense… 2009 – Starting QB who was one of the best in the country goes down midway through season. Finished the year with 4 string QB.. 2010 – Actually had a healthy team—-WAC Champions! 2011 – More injuries than any other team I can remember…

I’m not trying to make excuses for the guy but look at his tenure from a realistic point of view.

I mean the guy has only had one year where he had a solid QB for the entire season…

  196. huh? November 14, 2011 4:17 pm

    189. huh?

After four years, who’s fault would you lay blame for not building depth?

Perhaps we need a coach and a whole staff that will go out and recruit all year round. Aren’t they paid a salary?

    Isn’t a salary for a whole year?

We have a staff who feels that they are paid for only six months. They go home and play instead of doing their job. We should pay them part time money if thats the case.

We have position coaches who haven’t improved their position players? They get into combines and camps and the experts there scratch their heads. They see amazing physical specimens who still haven’t learned the basic rudiments of the game.

So who’s responsible for all this?

    huh?

  197. huh? November 14, 2011 4:18 pm

    Disclaimer.

There are some coaches worth every penny and yes they recruit all year round.

Rolo, Tuioti, Smith, Aranda for example.

I think that there are real gems in the junior class. That QB from Baldwin is a great athlete. He could be outstanding as a receiver. I think that Wiley, the running back from Kahuku is the real deal. He is so smooth. I may have a bias but I think he’s the best in the State right now.

If the Mack gets canned, it would be heartbreaking to see some of these coaches go. Especially Tuioti. He is a head coach in the making. I would love to see him lead the warriors one day.

    BIK

  208. madeinhawaii November 14, 2011 5:44 pm

For most positions, we have good depth, unfortunately they are young and green because Mack has been recruiting primarily out of high schools since 2008. Mack doesn’t want to burn their red shirt years and put them out too soon. I respect his decision. Some need to bulk up, others may need to focus on academics in their first two years, and still others may need more time to learn the play book. Don’t forget we lost a number of key players at the last minute due to enrollment issues, too. Players that would easily qualify elsewhere.

  209. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 14, 2011 5:47 pm

Tuioti is the only coach I actually see emote. I like that. You can tell when he is excited. He shows it. Energy+Passion. Good speaker too.

Well aside from Mack when he gets those crazy eyes when the refs screw up.

  210. Markazulu November 14, 2011 5:50 pm

Shouts out to Moniz! BUT most people are over REACTING with Mcmackin first of all I say wait till the end of the season to judge IF we win out an win a bowl game then ok offer him a 2 year extension but If we lose then oh well. We won a wac title last year an still the stadium was horrible a 10-4 team we blew out everyone BUT Boise St! An well I do agree with the sheraton Hawai’i Bowl performance in parts of were a coach should produce an he didnt but Overall Mac has done a good job. I wish we were better than a .500 team every year but its gonna take time I mean the same fans calling for Mcmackin’s head also called for June Jones to be fired in 04 after we lost to a division 2 team but until we won our final 4 games he was on the “hot seat” now are CALLING him arguably our BEST COACH EVER! An the same fans called Colt Brennan out during the 05 season jumped on the bandwagon till the sugar bowl. Our Fans are just fickle an only support when they can be Nationally recognize me to but I still cheer an support! I think though getting rid of our coaches right now is horrible to do. Mac an the boys just need to keep playing an winning people will jump on the bandwagon if WE GET that national recognition again!

What if the University of Hawaii offered free seats to the next game to anybody? Just come on down and you get in free and sit wherever there are open seats. No need ticket takers, but connot sit in a seat if somebody has a ticket. I still don’t think that the stadium would fill up. Just the inconvience of traffic, parking, security trying to get into the stadium, cannot bring in outside food, work till 5 o’clock, and on and on.

  214. madeinhawaii November 14, 2011 6:11 pm

    iwwthm,

I’m kind of glad only one or two of our coaches really emote and get caught up in the moment. If all of them did, things might get out of hand, or the coaches not taken seriously. We wouldn’t need team leaders then, either. They’d only get in the way.

I’ve posted this before – Division I and I-AA schools are looking for about 5000 new players every year.

That’s a lot of kids to sort through so I don’t get too hung up on the ones that got away, the ones that the coaches looked at but didn’t offer, the ones that the coaches didn’t even look at, or every single player who want to transfer from another school. All that matters is that the coaches can find 25 new players every year who can play and play well, fit in, and be good citizens, and who cares where they come from or how they are found (in other words, don’t knock the walk-ons).

  230. Old Diver November 14, 2011 7:15 pm

Every week I pick UH to win just because I want UH to win. Many times I will come up with some outrageous score cause it’s just for fun. This week I have that feeling. I can’t explain it, I can’t describe it, it’s just a feeling . The Warrior’s are going to put everything together this week.

    UH–35

    Dogs-20

    Anyone else have that feeling?

  231. Derek November 14, 2011 7:27 pm

The attendance being down is not a surprise. A lot of people are just disgusted. Losing is one thing, but how we lost is the thing that bites people’s ass. And, it’s not like we are losing to real good teams. UNLV, San Jose St., and Utah St.??? These are teams we beat badly last year. Don’t under estimate Fresno State. They are desperate for a win and they can score a lot of points. Their problem is that they give up a lot of points too. But, we lose our starting QB so that has got to hurt. I can see us losing to Fresno St. in a game that will go down to the 4th quarter, and maybe the last possession and if you look at our season has been going I think we will screw it up in the end. Take the 6 points on Fresno. Fresno State – 34, Hawaii-31.

    Did you know?

    1) Ian Johnson, former Boise St. great RB is on the practice squad of the San Francisco 49ers.

    2) Aaron Rodgers played at Butte junior college before getting a scholarship from California, the same junior college that Alex Green went to. Coincidentally Rodgers and Green are teammates on the Packers.

    3) Jordon Rodgers, Aaron’s brother, is the starting QB at Vanderbilt. He’s a clone of his brother. Throws the same way, runs like him too. He’s also very good. I predict he will be in the NFL in a couple of years.

UH hasn’t covered the spread since they beat La Tech. That’s a long time ago. This UH team is not to be trusted. I wouldn’t be surprised if we lose to Tulane too. Remember, Conference USA teams are a lot better than WAC teams that’s for sure. Examples, Houston and Southern Miss are ranked. Tulsa is a very good team and getting some votes. SMU is good. Central Florida is good. UTEP ain’t bad. Marshall ain’t bad. Rice is half decent. Hawaii has bad karma this year. Too many injuries and bad coaching spells disaster. But, don’t lament. Boise St. has kickiung problems too, in fact, 3 bad kicks cost Boise St. 2 BCS bids and 2 undefeated seasons. Chris Peterson and Kellen Moore must be shaking their heads and saying “oh, so close”. But, credit TCU. They kept coming back and made the all important 2 pt. conversion. Gary Patterson is a very good coach.

Interesting list of possible candidates for the next Head Coaching job. 1 possible is not on the list who I shall not name, but when my friend mentioned his name to me it made a lot of sense and I would have never thought he might be interested. But, he might be interested and my friend knows him personally so I trust my friend’s opinion.

  235. AlaWai November 14, 2011 8:18 pm

If the reason why attendance is down because we are losing games, then how does anyone explain 2007 when we were winning and there were still many open seats in the stands? Is UH football now a business of entertainment for bettors? Are we now a football mill where winning at all costs is priority one? Is our APR more important than our graduation rate? I may be an unrealistic idealist, but I always thought that supporting your state school was just as important as going to your kids soccer or little league game. I stayed loyal to my high school teams through thick and thin, win or lose. If this is what we have become we don’t deserve a football program. We should dismantle our AD, lower tuition and become a community college. Legalize sports betting here so we can at least raise revenue rather than debating the worth of a football coach. Everyone would then be united in our disdain and disgust.

  236. papajoe2 November 14, 2011 8:23 pm

#220, I know that those with tickets will be mad and UH will never let all those people in for free, but the point is, I don’t think that the stadium will fill up even if its free. Just ask the students. And they get free transportation.

  237. papajoe2 November 14, 2011 8:26 pm

Ralph, yep, I wen go public skul, but one coach said no worry, I no need pay, cuz he wen put me on skolarship.

  238. admrvt November 14, 2011 8:30 pm

#104 Not an Expert makes some good points, but let me add to them. The root of the problem is not coach Mac, but goes much deeper. There are many factors but they are inter-related.

Remember – a “house divided against itself cannot stand.” How successful we will be as a program and as a team, year in and year out — at least how we “feel” about being successful, is the result of several factors: 1) our expectations, 2) funding, 3) recruiting, and coaching.

What are our realistic expectations for this program and team? 9-3 or 10-2 EVERY year? A conference championship every other year?

Are we committed to funding this expectation every year? Does our administration support this level? Before we think about our coaching — is this important foundation in place? Do we have 200 fans who donate $10K every year to drive this expectation? If we do not retain coach Mac, we expect to have a more successful successor by cutting the salary to a base of $600 – 700K? Someone posted a list of successors. How many on that list can we realistically get? Many of the OCs or DCs on that list already make more than this base range, yet we think they will apply?

Until a few years ago, when Mac came one, what funding did our admin give our coaches to recruit with? $20,000? Gee, I wonder why recruiting was so dismal? Mac got better funding, and has now tried to focus less on JCs and more HS recruits, but it takes time for HS recruits to be able to compete when we expect winning seasons against better competition each year.

In spite of all our deficiencies in lack of adequate funding, lack of support by UH admin, high expectations, etc., June gave the team a chance by bringing in a system — the RNS, that didn’t require physical superiority to compete against the haves. But, that can only go so far, with luck and avoiding injuries.

Critics say its is time to change coaches. Fine, but there are more fundamental problems that need to be solved and still have not been. Until you find a way to get fans to show up and average 40,000 per game, you will not get the funding you need to meet expectations of these critical fans. Another 15,000 fans per game x $30 per fan x 7 home games = might generate the funds to improve changes of meeting the high expectations these fans want.

But, be careful. The next Von Appen is waiting for his chance to lead.

  239. palolo November 14, 2011 8:38 pm

Did anyone listen to Bobby Curren today. He is a nut in love with QB Mo. He said Austin is bad, and is not close to Mo in talent. He wants us to all give up and not go to anymore games? Bobby needs to listen to himself and be more positive towards our football team. I love the Rainbows and will love them when all these punks go collect there gambling winnings betting against UH like Mo’s family.

  240. Slugger November 14, 2011 8:44 pm

I don’t listen to Bobby Curren. Not worth it.

  241. AlaWai November 14, 2011 8:46 pm

admrvt: Right on. The question is how to get another 15K fans in the seats. Do we ban alcohol sales to make games for family friendly? Will a family of four shell out $120 for tickets. $80 for food. Multiply by seven games and you have annual expenses of over $1,500 per household. Somebody has to foot the bill for a better program and our state has shown diminishing interest in doing so.

Boise State head coach Chris Petersen said he thinks San Diego State would make a good western partner for his program in a proposed western division of the Big East Conference.

Asked Monday if he thought SDSU would be a good candidate for that, Petersen said, “Absolutely. No doubt.”

One reason he’d like it is recruiting. About 30 players on his roster are from California, including several from Southern California and San Diego County. Being in the same conference as SDSU allows him to tell recruits that their families occasionally can watch them play near home.

“Any time we could stay west, certainly in California, we would like that,” Petersen said Monday in a phone interview with The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Sandusky said about the incident in the PSU locker room that the kid turned on all the showers and turned the showers into a “Slip-N-Slide” which he said would explain the slapping noise McQueary heard.

    Ala Wai,

Somebody has to up our local economy so that more can afford to go to the games and watch it live. Even those that watch for free at the Kaneohe food court aren’t eating much… most don’t even have a soft drink in front of them after the first qtr. Worse, they are still occupying the seats.

  258. PowderPuff November 14, 2011 11:16 pm

I can’t believe I’m up watching basketball…this is crazy late for an old lady like me. Who was mentioning…that wouldn’t it be cool (or maybe not) if President Obama showed up to the SSC? Maybe it was al?

Obama says aloha tomorrow. This weekend, Fresno State and Pac-Man. I don’t even know if I heard right, but did someone say Pacquiao is going to the Fresno State game this Saturday?

  277. Nike soccer cleats November 15, 2011 2:42 am

The Nike soccer cleats Tiempo IV Elite’s upper is comprised of an ultra-soft kangaroo leather upper Nike mercurial soccer cleats that once featured on the original Nike Mercurial Superfly boots. However, using new technologies such as the addition of Flywire and the carbon Mercurial Vapors fiber soleplate, they’ve managed to bring the boot down to a brilliant 8.2 ounces. The Tiempo IV Elite now has visibility enhancing patterns on the heel in an effort to get teammates to notice the wearer quicker. The way Nike does this is by using Mercurial Vapor Superfly 3 Volt diagonals on the heel which increases the peripheral vision of teammates.

With the first New nike soccer shoes Elite colourway release since the inception of the boot, the Mercurial Vapor Superfly IV range carries the thought of a classic football boot with a modern twist. Nike Football Cleats have taken this concept and thrown it right into your face with this new colourway. The addition of Volt not only clashes with the classy nature of the Nike Mercurial Vapor Superfly boot, but it might also cause some clashes with the fans!

You know, they say, details make or break the argument.. And it couldn’t be much more accurate here. Having said that, let me reveal to you precisely what did give good results. The authoring is certainly incredibly convincing and this is most likely the reason why I am taking an effort in order to comment. I do not really make it a regular habit of doing that. Secondly, whilst I can certainly see the jumps in reasoning you make, I am not really sure of how you appear to connect the points that make the conclusion. For now I shall yield to your point but hope in the foreseeable future you actually connect your dots better.

Thanks for revealing your ideas with this blog. Likewise, a delusion regarding the lenders intentions if talking about property foreclosures is that the bank will not have my payments. There is a certain quantity of time in which the bank will require payments from time to time. If you are way too deep inside the hole, they’re going to commonly demand that you pay the actual payment entirely. However, that doesn’t mean that they will have any sort of installments at all. In case you and the traditional bank can manage to work a little something out, the particular foreclosure method may end. However, should you continue to miss payments beneath new plan, the foreclosures process can pick up exactly where it left off.

One thing I’d like to say is always that car insurance cancelling is a hated experience and if you are doing the best things being a driver you won’t get one. Some people do obtain notice that they are officially dropped by the insurance company they then have to struggle to get further insurance following a cancellation. Low-cost auto insurance rates usually are hard to get after a cancellation. Having the main reasons for auto insurance termination can help people prevent burning off one of the most essential privileges out there. Thanks for the suggestions shared through your blog.
