Painful reminder

It is easy to forget that sacrifices football players make extend beyond their college careers.

Here’s one reminder: Quarterback Greg Alexander, whose Warrior career ended with a knee injury suffered during a 2009 game, recently underwent his 10th surgery on that knee.

The UH-BYU volleyball matches will be shown tomorrow and Friday on BYU’s cable network. That network was one of the reasons BYU decided to go independent in football; it also served as inspiration for Texas to strike a deal for an all-Longhorn national channel. Oceanic and UH are proposing an all-UH channel, possibly to launch as early as this fall. The direction of that project takes shape when Oceanic hires a leader. Dave Vinton and Dan Schmidt had second interviews the past Friday.

Happy birthday to David “Mento” Maeva and Myron Newberry.

pin

After the volleyball Warriors defeated Pepperdine in the 2002 NCAA final match, the team was awarded championship rings. In turn, the booster club sold replica pins of those rings. Today, one of those pins is a blog prize. To enter, please post: Kills equal thrills.

Avis picks a winner tonight.

That’s too bad. I hope this surgery will be Greg Alexander’s last! Prayers for a speedy recovery!

  2. gigi-hawaii March 23, 2011 8:03 am

It’s such a bleak, blustery morning! Hope the weather is better in your part of the world.

Hopeful for a quick and successful healing for Greg.

  6. d1shima March 23, 2011 8:18 am

Sad to hear that. Healing thoughts for Greg Alexander.

At the very least I hope his medical expenses are being covered by UHAD.

  7. madeinhawaii March 23, 2011 8:23 am

Poor Greg! Heal up Warrior! God Bless!

  8. madeinhawaii March 23, 2011 8:23 am

    Good Morning all!

  9. Pauoa Boy March 23, 2011 8:25 am

That sucks for Greg Alexander to have that many surgeries on one knee. I think if he didn’t go down he would’ve had a big Senior year and Moniz wouldn’t be where he is now. So I guess it was a blessing in disguise for Moniz but an unfortunate circumstance for Greg. Anyway, still think he could be playing QB somewhere in the CFL or UFL…

Good to see Tyler Graunke still playing football. I think if he hadn’t screwed himself, he would’ve been the man running the show instead of Moniz…

  10. Stephen Tsai March 23, 2011 8:25 am

UH compliance officer Amanda Paterson suffered knee injuries during her UH soccer career many years ago. She still undergoes procedures and, I heard, she does not have cartilage in one of her knees.

I know Shawn Ching had knee procedures many years after his football career ended.

The players who are cheered on the field might be the ones sitting next to your parents in the physical therapist’s waiting room.

  11. Stephen Tsai March 23, 2011 8:27 am

Actually, Graunke’s senior year preceded Moniz’s first year at UH.

  12. d1shima March 23, 2011 8:28 am

    PT is a burgeoning field.

  13. gigi-hawaii March 23, 2011 8:28 am

Yeah, I know what PT is like. I underwent many sessions for my frozen left shoulder. Not fun!

  14. haka March 23, 2011 8:30 am

    Good Luck Greg!

    Go UH!…in HD!

  15. madeinhawaii March 23, 2011 8:30 am

    It may get worse.

New studies, with laboratory rats, provides solid evidence of a direct link between certain kinds of prolonged exercise and heart damage — resulting in scarring and structural changes, similar to those seen in the human endurance athletes.

  16. gigi-hawaii March 23, 2011 8:31 am

an off-shoot of PT is massage therapy. My cousin, who was a PT, became a massage therapist and is doing very well. She has so many clients, she has to decline new ones. Isn’t it $90/hour?

  17. gigi-hawaii March 23, 2011 8:32 am

    MIH,

then I guess I am better off being sedentary, huh? lol. who would have guessed!

  18. Stephen Tsai March 23, 2011 8:36 am

It might be scary to see the long-term effects of concussions.

  19. madeinhawaii March 23, 2011 8:36 am

    gigi,

You scar your tissues one way and clog em up the other way. The Grim Reaper has the game fixed his/her/it’s way.

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Thanks to Greg Alexander for his great sacrifice. Prayers for his continued healing.

anxiety, cardiovascular disease, depression, diabetes, colon cancer, high blood pressure, obesity, osteoporosis, lipid disorders, kidney stones.

ninety-five percent chance you are overweight.

  23. Da Punchbowl Kid March 23, 2011 8:46 am

  27. mctruck March 23, 2011 8:50 am

I’ve had spine surgery on my neck/cuncussion/and surgery on my right shoulder; all of which required a PT afterwards…..should have married my girlfriend who was a PT,(wuz too bossy and didn’t have da right kisses)……but, liked fb!?……hmmmmm??

  28. gigi-hawaii March 23, 2011 8:52 am

    ST,

Well NFL QB Steve Young had to retire because of multiple concussions. So far so good. He has a law degree and is on TV. He appears to be in good health.

  29. SteveM March 23, 2011 8:54 am

    Good morning everyone.

Surprised to hear about Greg Alexander. Wish him well!

    How’s your progress?

…and steve young is an heir to brigham young.

  35. SteveM March 23, 2011 9:03 am

Kid — I’m wishing a good day to “Tsing Tao Tom” too (you coined it and I think it’s catchy) who should be cruising in the Seoul – Jeju Island area around now. Mentioned it to my mom, who knew Jeju Island from the Korean soap operas. I had to google it.

  36. mctruck March 23, 2011 9:04 am

years after my concussion….I find my ability to remember things has gotten worse and numbers/figures have become more complex than it was before.

  37. madeinhawaii March 23, 2011 9:11 am

    DPK,

I can do a 20 minute mile before the chest starts to tighten up a bit … but if I slow down for half a mile, I can pick up the pace again and go on till my knees start to wobble without any discomfort in my chest. From 50 mgs of Metoprolol and 25mb of Losartan per day for my blood pressure just a month ago, I’m doing fine with just 15mg of Metoprolol per day. This edta chelation + exercise combo seems to be working for me.

  38. Da Punchbowl Kid March 23, 2011 9:11 am

    Travellin’ Tsing Tao Tom.

  39. Da Punchbowl Kid March 23, 2011 9:13 am

Sounds like great progress, made. Keep up the good work.

  40. madeinhawaii March 23, 2011 9:13 am

    mctruck,

I dunno if you can blame that on the concussion. I think a lot has to do with growing old and the little capillaries feeding the brain. You might wanna try some edta too.

  41. Da Punchbowl Kid March 23, 2011 9:15 am

    Now…

    back to Warrior sports.

The TV news folks have featured a couple of nice stories on UH receivers Darius Bright and Royce Pollard. Moniz likes ’em both a lot.

  42. madeinhawaii March 23, 2011 9:17 am

    DPK,

I figured out that one lap around the second floor of the Windward shopping mall – from the second level entrance and back is just over 1/4 of a mile. So that’s where the wife and I walk daily… in air-conditioned comfort with thick carpeted, cushioned floors.

  43. Slugger March 23, 2011 9:18 am

Graunke is getting a “third-fourth” chance to play football in Germany after getting “cut” by a team in the Indoor Football League…Let’s hope he makes good from this opportunity.

That sucks about Greg Alexander. He was coming along really well prior to getting hurt. I wish him all the best and will remember his sacrifice for our team!

I know the coaches preach “get down/get out of bounds” to our QB’s, but it seems like this is causing injuries in some of these situations where maybe they should’ve just plowed into the defender. Just my own 2 cents.

  78. Michigan Warrior March 23, 2011 12:24 pm

Remember that prior to this injury, it seemed that most times Alexander took off, he’d either pick up a first down, 10+ yards, or both. Can’t fault the guy for being competitive and trying to make things happen.

  79. Michigan Warrior March 23, 2011 12:26 pm

Mahalo to RainbowCliff, JM2375, and Manoa Mist for sharing your experiences with the late Mr. Schumaker!

  80. losthawaiian March 23, 2011 12:26 pm

Good luck to G. Alexander. To be going through so many surgeries while still so young is tough. I had my knee replaced last year after too many years of pain. PT is also rough but well worth it to insure as much mobility after the injury heals. My surgery was a piece of cake compared to the level of pain of the PT exercises for a few months after.

  81. Jack Flash March 23, 2011 12:36 pm

#78- MW- i think in this instance, he was trying to slow up and cruise out of bounds when he got hit at an awkward angle. Might not have gotten hurt if he ran into the guy and delivered the blow. But again, hindsight etc. I hope he heals up!

Warrior Volleyball vs BYU – last year’s rescheduled match was the first time the Screechers and I experienced the “conversationalists”. That had to be the smallest crowd for a vb match in a long time. Anyone remember who the BYWho player was that kept “playing” with his uniform? Charlie Wade was very annoyed and wanted the refs to call something against him.

  99. Guy in the office March 23, 2011 1:26 pm

Re: 91. For more on Ryan Aaron, 6-3 guard with a 40-inch vertical, see Dayton Morinaga’s story and another video at warriorinsider.com Intriguing prospect.

  100. Curt March 23, 2011 1:30 pm

MBB is definitely in good hands. It’ll be interesting to see who else Gib can pick up. You would think he would be very very choosy with this last pick. I’m wondering if he’s still trying to recruit a pg?

  101. Curt March 23, 2011 1:33 pm

Awesome…a 40 inch vertical. That’s almost as good as ST! 😉

  102. jm2375 March 23, 2011 1:49 pm

Curt – #101 – think you need to move the decimal point over a couple of numbers to the left for ST. 🙄

  103. Curt March 23, 2011 1:57 pm

    jm2375,

You’re right. I stand corrected; his vertical is 0.4 inches.

  108. Kazz March 23, 2011 2:16 pm

    JM,

That was like a Monday rescheduled game I think??? Yeah, got to sit with the gang but opposite of where their usual seats were. It was open seating though due to the rescheduling of the game with such short notice.

But yeah, that BYU guy who pulled up his shorts and made all macho-like after ONE kill was a bit much. Stretch and A-Joe gave it to him pretty hard. I remember Billy V saying that as soon as they saw the player do that he looked at someone next to him and they both cringed knowing how the ‘Conversationalists” would respond. 😆 😆 😆

With that being said I’ve missed WAAAAYYYYY too many Warrior Volleyball matches this season.. 🙁

  109. Curt March 23, 2011 2:18 pm

    Couch Potato,

My vertical’s not so hot either. Tsai-kos are not known for their verticals. I think we’re better on our horizontals…especially after a good lunch.

  110. wafan March 23, 2011 2:24 pm

The vertical of my horizontal is pretty decent. Even better if I inhale before measuring!

  111. jm2375 March 23, 2011 2:28 pm

Kazz – that was the first game we sat behind Stretch & A-joe. What an experience. 😆 I remember Charlie Wade yelling at the refs about the guy. They were so shorthanded that night that Tsai Jr and the Screechers were ball girls/boy.

  112. Couch potato March 23, 2011 2:38 pm

Anyhoo, looking at the potential warrior recruits and some who have already indicated their choices next season. Bball is looking UP! Lots of pg potential, some of the bigs look like they got some hops and the rb stats. GIVE DAT MAN A RAISE! or two or three….

  128. Michigan Warrior March 23, 2011 3:34 pm

I was about 10 years old… at my great-grandparents’ home in Makaha… we were all gathered around a 7″ long centipede that was cornered…

Cousins dared me to step on it to squish it… I stepped on the wrong end… was rushed to the clinic for treatment of a vicious bite.

    Lesson learned.

  129. wafan March 23, 2011 3:34 pm

I found the best way to kill a centipede is to bring a bible and throw holy water on it.

  136. wafan March 23, 2011 3:47 pm

How does a wet Bible kill the centipede? Unless you then pummel and squish the centipede with it.

Friend of mine owns a house on the windward side. It’s infested with centipedes.

They like to crawl on her bed and bite her husband while he is sleeping above the covers.

Once, she sprinkled poison bait around her bed. It attracted even more centipedes!

    ugh!

An exterminator came to my parent’s house last year to work on a centipede problem and he boasted that there is this new stuff that essentially renders the centipedes infertile so they cannot reproduce, BUT it doesn’t kill them.

I told my parents, who took the offer, “ummm… you know, if it just killed them they ALSO wouldn’t be able to reproduce and they’d be ummm… DEAD”.

    HELLO????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At least me and my brother went with Sandwich Isles Pest Control. They’ve got some lethal stuff. The kind where we have to leave the house for about two hours after they spray the inside and outside.

  153. Kazz March 23, 2011 4:43 pm

The WAC boastes many capable pitchers as well.

Michelle Moses and MacKenzie Oakes from Fresno State are great pitchers. I am especially SURPRISED how well Oakes is doing right now.

Stephanie Ricketts and Kaia Parnaby lead all WAC starting pitchers in ERA. Steph with 1.43 and Kaia with 1.20.

Meghan Kreig remains a MACHINE for LaTech and has 130+ Ks on the season.

Individually, Kreig looks to be the one with the most potential for dominance though as she did last year.

  154. gigi-hawaii March 23, 2011 4:44 pm

Have not seen any centipedes or scorpions in my yard or in my house, thank goodness.

BTW, Song Contest just got done this past weekend, but in our time you guys juiced out c/o ’65, no way you should’ve won! LOL

  214. Derek March 23, 2011 10:07 pm

Arnold has a purpose on where he’s looking for specific prospects, not so much for this coming season, but for future seasons. He and the staff have a bead on players that have been targeted for several years in advance. That’s the sign of a great coach, always planning 2 and 3 to 4 years ahead to keep the pipeline going. I still say we need players who are good shooters, athletic, and have good ball skills (mostly guards and maybe small forwards). Successful teams in the college game are primarily driven by good guard play, i.e. Nolan Smith, Fredette, Irving, Walker, Diebler, Lighty, Marshall from UNC, etc.

  215. Curt March 23, 2011 10:08 pm

    homey,

#209: Does Gib really fly a private jet for recruiting? The cost of that seems prohibitive.

  216. kev-1 March 23, 2011 10:09 pm

Just read that Harbaugh may not be sold on Alex Smith in San Fran. Big surprise. Among the qualities he’s looking for in a QB: accuracy; leadership; athleticism (a good QB should be able to play well in other sports); looking at tape when the team is down, do they give it to the RB or the QB? According to Harbaugh, that says a lot. . . . ummmm, can someone say Colt Brennan?

Here’s to hoping Colt’s training is going well and his agent can get him at least a look in San Fran. Heck, at least send Harbaugh some tape, and he will see what he’s looking for.

  217. Curt March 23, 2011 10:14 pm

Interesting that Gib does not allow geography to limit his recruiting. He da man.

  218. Curt March 23, 2011 10:21 pm

    kev-1,

I hope Colt can get back to throwing like he used to. I still believe that he not only has what it takes to play but to excel in the NFL. But, I would think he’s fairly rusty right now and probably needs to go to Canada to get some playing time to prove (again) that he’s got it.

  219. kev-1 March 23, 2011 10:24 pm

Curt . . . I’m sure you’re right. Just wishing out loud. Not to mention, with his injury history teams probably don’t want to come near him.

    Comment from: las vegas [Visitor]

A woman accompanied her husband to the doctor’s office.

After his checkup, the doctor called the wife into his office alone. He said, “Your husband is suffering from a very severe stress disorder. If you don’t follow my instructions carefully, your husband will surely die.

“Each morning, fix him a healthy breakfast. Be pleasant at all times. For lunch make him a nutritious meal. For dinner prepare an especially nice meal for him.

“Don’t burden him with chores. Don’t discuss your problems with him; it will only make his stress worse. Do not nag him. Most importantly, make love to him regularly.

“If you can do this for the next 10 months to a year, I think your husband will regain his health completely.”

On the way home, the husband asked his wife, “What did the doctor say?”

“He said you’re going to die,” she replied.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

  245. Kekoa March 24, 2011 3:14 am

Al ~ I’ve always been big on recruiting athletes from Germany. Not only do they meet and excell our standards, but they are eager to adapt to our way of life.

Sports clubs are a major part of grooming and developing the cream of the crop. International competition is a matter of pride (period).

Their measuring stick used to be competing with the teams from the USA…(like McDonald’s All

Star basketball teams). Now, they eat them for lunch…and I’m not talking about the burgers!

For coach Gib, the basketball tourney going on in Mannheim Germany during Spring break is HUGE! Every European country sends their best future Olympians to this tournament. Think of it! Russia, Yugoslavia, Spain, France! Many who played against Magic back then, went on to play in the NBA with him.

Al, to watch them compete every day for the entire week is like seeking the Holy Grail in basketball. I’m so excited, I can’t sleep!

    Good morning Wafan!

  246. wafan March 24, 2011 3:17 am

  250. Michigan Warrior March 24, 2011 3:47 am

Conferences for our kids are usually pretty smooth and quick. I can’t stand when one family has to take up 15+ minutes with each teacher. Wish they’d adhere to guidelines and set up a conference through their kid’s counselor!

    Kazz on # 133,

    re: “Tantalus Battle Scar”

Over 2 decades ago, I was sitting on a stone wall, talking to a buddy of mine on one of the lookouts on Tantalus. In the previous 36 hours had just had just been laid-off at my restaurant job and had just broken up with my fiance (fiancee?) who I’d been with for 6 years or so. To add injury to insult, a centipede crawled out and bit me on the butt. As I jumped up, my keys (car key, house key & steering wheel-lock key) flew out of my pocket and down the lookout. As I turned to kill the centipede, it scrabbled away down a hole in the wall. Not one of the stellar moments of my life. Good thing I’m not the suicidal type.

Al, I agree. Elizabeth Taylor in her younger days was just beautiful. Her complexion looked so smooth. As she got older she put on some pounds and she didn’t look as good. But, what a wonderful actress.

I met Leon Shumaker once. Nice man.

I was watching on You Tubel about songs that I liked. I listened Whitney Houston sing One Moment in Time on a Grammy’s. Unbelievable. My eyes got a little watery and got a little emotional. Gotta be one of the greatest songs when you think about being inspired. And, what a voice she had. Now sure what she’s doing now, but I had read she had some problems a few years ago. Anyway, look it up on the internet and I’m sure you’ll enjoy the song.

Very nice blog and thank you for sharing this information. I stumbled upon the following career testing website that I also found interesting. In contrast to traditional approaches which only use a simple personality test, OptYourLife examines many aspects such as memory, IQ, problem solving, and patience. It uses artificial intelligence to evaluate suitability of a job for a person while taking salary into account: http://www.optyourlife.com

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

The beauty of these blogging engines and CMS platforms is the lack of limitations and ease of manipulation that allows developers to implement rich content and ‘skin’ the site in such a way that with very little effort one would never notice what it is making the site tick all without limiting content and effectiveness.

The way an individual dresses constitutes a big effect upon folks. Whether it’s an interview or perhaps a business conference the way you dress makes a big impact. Many people kind opinions based on how a person is dressed up. Even though your work location does not have an outfit code outfitting the right way can give the actual impression that you will be wise, in charge and suggest enterprise.

This is the perfect blog for anyone who wants to know about this topic. You know so much its almost hard to argue with you (not that I really would want…HaHa). You definitely put a new spin on a subject thats been written about for years. Great stuff, just great!

This is a smart blog. I mean it. You have so much knowledge about this issue, and so much passion. You also know how to make people rally behind it, obviously from the responses. Youve got a design here thats not too flashy, but makes a statement as big as what youre saying. Great job, indeed.

  351. Carroll B. Merriman April 12, 2011 12:27 am

Sorry for the huge review, but I’m really loving the new Zune, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it’s the right choice for you.

  352. Mystery Shopping April 12, 2011 5:44 am

An interesting discussion is worth comment. I think that you should write more on this topic, it might not be a taboo subject but generally people are not enough to speak on such topics. To the next. Cheers

  355. Christian Louboutin April 12, 2011 8:18 pm

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

The beauty of these blogging engines and CMS platforms is the lack of limitations and ease of manipulation that allows developers to implement rich content and ‘skin’ the site in such a way that with very little effort one would never notice what it is making the site tick all without limiting content and effectiveness.
