Overtime

To make up for the missed practice caused by the tsunami threat, the Warriors will extend spring training.

Spring training was set to end with the April 15 Warrior Bowl on the Manoa campus. The makeup practice is set for Monday, April 18, and will be spent mostly on special teams.

Also, the talk-story clinic for coaches has been rescheduled for Friday, April 8, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The entry fee is $20, which will cover refreshments. For information, call (808) 956-6508.

Chad Ikei, who has worked with many former Hawaii football players, has sold his business in Arizona and plans to open a training facility in Hawaii. After living on the Mainland for 19 years, Ikei and his family will move back in August.

This year, Ikei is training seven players with Hawaii ties, including former Warriors Mana Silva, Laupepa Letuli, Adrian Thomas and Kainoa LaCount.

This weekend, Ikei will be conducting a clinic for kickers. It will be held at the recreation center in Kahaluu on Oahu’s Windward side. For information, call Rockwell Fukino at (808) 723-5321.

The other day, we wondered what the CollegeInsider.com Tournament did with all of the participation fees it collected from the teams. Then it hit — ding, ding, ding — wouldn’t it be great if the money was thrown into a pot, with the tournament winner claiming it?

Happy birthday to the mother of all mothers, Esme.

    Go Warriors!

    Go Wahine!

    Ignore the trolls!

  2. haka March 17, 2011 8:48 am

    Oh, forgot

    Happy St Paddy’s Day!

    ST=Saint?

  3. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 8:49 am

So a few days ago, I wondered aloud why athletes go away to train. And now Chad Ikei is moving here.

Today, I wonder aloud what it would be like if I won MegaBucks.

  4. haka March 17, 2011 8:50 am

    Oh and..

    Go Irish!

I have them going to the Sweet 16 in my pool. 🙂

    Ok ’nuff already

  5. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 8:51 am

Why charge for a talk-story session?

I guess the NCAA considers it a recruiting advantage to provide free beer and pupu to high school coaches.

  6. madeinhawaii March 17, 2011 8:53 am

    Morning!

What does the money go to from the talk-story session?

  7. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 8:56 am

    MIH:

It goes to beer, soda and food.

  8. gigi-hawaii March 17, 2011 8:57 am

So each attendee will eat $20 worth of food??? How much do potato chips cost anyway? lol

  9. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 8:58 am

And I was around when they were placing orders for “green bottles.” Hmmm. Suddenly, a lot of people are coaches.

  10. gigi-hawaii March 17, 2011 8:58 am

    Happy St. Paddy’s Day!

Hubby is Irish, English and Scottish.

Since Korea is considered the Ireland of the Pacific, I guess I am Irish, too.

  11. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 8:58 am

    There will be poke.

  12. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 9:00 am

I was watching Real Sports yesterday, and now I know what happened to Sean Salisbury.

  13. gigi-hawaii March 17, 2011 9:01 am

Debating whether I should google Sean Salisbury. Who dat?

  14. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 9:02 am

Anyway, I think the format for the coaches social is a good idea.

If you prepare a lecture of Xs and Os, you’ll just get plenty of Zs.

But you put a bunch of coaches in a room, free to wander and wonder, then you’ll get some nice exchange of ideas. Well, as long ILH people mingle with OIA people.

  15. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 9:06 am

    Gigi:

Sean Salisbury was a backup quarterback in the NFL for eight years, then a football analyst for ESPN for about 12 years. He was everywhere, and then suddenly he was nowhere. I think he did one of the UH games in Fresno. I wasn’t really paying attention at the time, because, you know, like some people, I’m self-absorbed, but he apparently shared a picture of himself that he shouldn’t have shared. He denied it, threatened to sue a bunch of outlets, and last year finally confessed to the one-time incident.

  16. SteveM March 17, 2011 9:10 am

    Good morning everyone!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY ESME !!!

    …famous mom and Tsai-ko verb!

  17. Stretch March 17, 2011 9:10 am

I hope they didn’t chill the beer from the tsunami time then let it get warm. Unless the coaches like to drink skunky beer

  18. gigi-hawaii March 17, 2011 9:11 am

    Thanks, ST.

Sounds like something Brett Favre would do…

  19. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 9:12 am

Anyway, I thought it was fascinating that the guy was on all of the time, and then he disappeared, and I didn’t even notice. I was at a lunch yesterday, and one of the people brought up his name. And I was like, oh, yeah, I remember him. Then I was randomly watching a Real Sports’ piece on deadspin.com, and he was one of the featured people. Weird coincidence. But, again, more puzzling that I didn’t notice he was off the air for a couple of years. Just like now I’m wondering: What happened to Jerry Springer?

  20. chopsueyboy March 17, 2011 9:12 am

    Top Twenty!

    Good Morning Tsai-kos!

  21. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 9:13 am

  27. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 9:16 am

Spoke with Miah Ostrowski last night.

Apparently Manti Teo and Roby Toma were at the game Tuesday night. Both wore those specially made Miah T-shirts.

  28. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 9:20 am

It would be something, though, if both wore those green shoes.

  29. jm2375 March 17, 2011 9:21 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

    Happy Birthday Esme!

ST – please make sure you are still covering the MVB game vs USC (!) the night of the coaches’ social. There should no SA stories on MVB without your byline.

If Stretch has a minimum wage job, then what do the rest of us have? 😆

  30. Bowwar March 17, 2011 9:30 am

Wish they would sell those Miah shirts to the general public…It would be a great boost for the UH Basketball team in exposure.

And a Happy Good Morning to you too WSF!

  42. Kazz March 17, 2011 10:36 am

I wouldnt mind those Oregon-esque loud a** green shoes from Addidas IF IF… they wore the all blacks.

One gimmicky uniform deserves to be worn with gimmicky shoes. 😎

  43. Kazz March 17, 2011 10:37 am

    Stretch,

I’m sure the coaches won’t mind skunky beer.

I mean they already ordered green bottles…….

    OH SCHNAP!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

  44. Kazz March 17, 2011 10:39 am

I think the only way one can get away with selling Miah’s shirts are if they use his image, but black out the “HAWAII” on his uniform and everything else associated with the university as:

-UH themselves cannot sell items for profit with a student-athlete’s name or image.

-3rd party vendors avoiding using UH branded tapa print to avoid trademark/licensing issues.

  45. Kazz March 17, 2011 10:41 am

Having the UH pep band last night was fantasic!!!

I got chickenskin when they played “Fight For Old Hawaii” inbetween an inning and our fight song “CoEd” at the end of the game as the players came over and gathered in front of the band to thank them.

It really solidified and sent the message that the softball team is just as much a part of the university as any other “big” program.

Plus, it’s always great to hear your university’s fight song played live by the band after a win!

  46. Kazz March 17, 2011 10:45 am

The parents of the players really loved the band as well.

You don’t see a lot of D1 college programs bring the band over to softball games outside of UCLA and maybe Florida.

Depending on the pep band’s ability, the Na Wahine Softball Booster Club, Coach Coolen, and UH administration are mindful that the UH band has many other obligations on top of performing at UH sporting events, not to mention their own academic priorities just like any other student and student-athlete at UH and with that being said, the next appearance for the UH marching band will be further explored.

  47. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 10:45 am

Don’t think Miah did it for profit. It was a gesture for his friends, family and teammates.

  48. jm2375 March 17, 2011 10:46 am

Kazz – props to you and the Booster Club for getting the band to play!!

The band is sorely missed when they are not at games, like last weekend’s volleyball games.

  49. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 10:47 am

It was interesting the band was there for volleyball, but the section was still roped off.

  50. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 10:48 am

Glad Brennon Dyer made the trip. Should be interesting since Welch is playing well.

  51. PowderPuff March 17, 2011 10:48 am

Welcome back, Chad! A Cougar…wooo hooo! Thank you for the training you’ve given to our Hawaii boys.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day and HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the one and only Esme!!!

  53. al March 17, 2011 11:10 am

i’ll bet that the mbb team will be wearing that lime green shoes again.

Oh no I didn’t mean it to come off that way, I was just saying that IF a 3rd party thought about selling shirts that that’s how they might get away with it.

  56. Kazz March 17, 2011 11:15 am

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ESME!

With response to a post about someone mentioning Austin Wilkerson verballing to UH softball, I am amazed at her clocked bat speed of 78mph.

Lower campus on Saturday is going to be a parking mess.

Big basketball game combined with baseball game as well. It’s a good thing that the softball bracket/championship game will be earlier in the day so we can snag decent parking before everyone else does. 😎

  62. Lanaiboy March 17, 2011 11:40 am

Went to UH to watch the Wahine softball game shortly after 1 p.m. Parking lot filled; very common during school hours. Looked for on-street parking but no luck. Finally went home and took the bus. Guess I’ll be doing that anytime the games are scheduled during the week day when classes are in session. Live and learn.

  63. Michigan Warrior March 17, 2011 11:44 am

    Howzit, everyone!

Good to see so many positive things happening all through our UH athletics landscape!

Wish we could’ve attended more events while we were there… still lots more Tsaikos that we haven’t met yet, including the Dean himself, and his gang!

    Happy birthday, Esme!

  64. jm2375 March 17, 2011 11:50 am

Lanaiboy – #62 – I think after about 2 or 2:30, the parking structure starts emptying out. You should check with sj-macro. If you go in before 4pm, fee is $4 instead of $5. The other place you might look is the Hawaiian Studies Bldg, further down Dole St.

  65. Kazz March 17, 2011 11:54 am

    Stretch,

We’ve also got the first round of the Nutball Championships over at Johnson Hall. It would have been over at the quads but none of us attend UH anymore.

The public is welcome to attend. Please bring beer.

I need to remember post #319 from 3/16.

    Go bows!

  67. Ralph March 17, 2011 12:18 pm

Longboarder did you respond to WSF post #260 from 3/16. I guess you and BB didn’t get to watch the softball game last night.

I didn’t know he was waiting for an introduction from anyone, maybe WSF can post another offer and be specific on when he will be at the game

  68. Kazz on Droid_X March 17, 2011 12:21 pm

Nevermind that crap. Come play Nutball.

The sport can make you feel young again.

    Gigi:

I like it when it’s made with, I suppose, real corned beef. Not the canned one.

  72. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 12:37 pm

    Remember Lynn’s in Ala Moana.

They used to have really good corned beef and pastrami.

I remember my friend ordered pastrami on rye with cream cheese. I figured I’d give it a go. It was great. Of course, it was punishing on the lactose intolerant. But, hey, well worth it.

  73. gigi-hawaii March 17, 2011 12:37 pm

    ST,

    Ewww…

I hate corned beef of any kind. Cabbage even more so. Yes, even cabbage kim chee.

  74. gigi-hawaii March 17, 2011 12:38 pm

Pastrami? Yummy! I just made myself a pastrami sandwich with clover sprouts for lunch today. Grrreeeat.

  75. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 12:39 pm

    J:

My cardiologist, Dr. Hingson Chun, has a meat-smoking machine at his house.

I used to wonder why a cardiologist would do that. But then somebody said that doctors usually were good at chemistry, and this is sort of an extension of that.

And, of course, the other answer is: Because it tastes great.

  76. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 12:41 pm

We went to Carnegie Deli in New York. Now that’s a pastrami sandwich. Thing is, they charge you extra if you share it with someone. It’s an all-in deal.

    And that’s why I have a cardiologist.

  77. jm2375 March 17, 2011 12:45 pm

ST – medical personnel make the worst patients. Wait a minute, is Dr. Chun a Roosevelt classmate of yours?

  78. al March 17, 2011 12:59 pm

a different way to serve your corned beef.

instead of the traditional boiling until it is really dead…try this.

fire up the hibachi and grill the corned beef on a low fire for a bit. it will make for the best tasting irish pipikaula. slice em thin and serve with your favorite beverages.

add more chili pepper if you like it hot. or better yet the vinegar, shoyu, chili pepper water mixture.

  79. J March 17, 2011 1:01 pm

Explains why this Ph.D (Biochem) that I know brews beer…

No need smoker. A few pounds of brisket, kosher salt, some herbs and a lot of patience (you gotta wait about a week)…

  80. al March 17, 2011 1:02 pm

i think that corned beef is really a guy thing.

best reuben sandwiches were to be found at the old tahitian lanai restaurant. not to forget their popovers, moa tahari, eggs benedict, baked avocado with crabmeat, curries, and the like. oh do i miss that place.

  81. al March 17, 2011 1:04 pm

and for the real men…chicken liver omelette.

  82. Esme March 17, 2011 1:04 pm

    What’s up, Tsaikos? Howzit, ST!

Awww, thanks for the sweet birfday wishes. I regret that it’s been a while since I’ve hung out in the Tsaiko online clubhouse. So I have to say that it is really nice to still be remembered and thought of by some. Thanks, everyone!

  85. gigi-hawaii March 17, 2011 1:16 pm

For our 45th class reunion, our class decided to paint the cafeteria lanai. Afterward, we had a bento lunch and then toured the new auditorium and stadium.

This year, our class is going to reunite to celebrate our 65th birthday.

I still keep in touch with my RHS classmates. What a fun group!

  86. gigi-hawaii March 17, 2011 1:17 pm

I remember the Paintbrush Trophy that we won, playing football against Punahou. Those were the days.

  89. SteveM March 17, 2011 1:29 pm

    Hiya Esme!

    RE; #85

gigi — 65th birthday? Hmmm, look in your Roosevelt yearbook and see if knew/remember Arthur Misemer.

  90. sportsforfun March 17, 2011 1:29 pm

    Gigi,

My friend who graduated from Punahou n the 80’s told me a tradition about that paintbrush. When Roosevelt and Punahou would play each other in football, the winner was allowed to paint the dome of the losing school the winners school colors. Is that true?

  91. gigi-hawaii March 17, 2011 1:34 pm

    SteveM,

okay. I’ll look for my annual.

  92. gigi-hawaii March 17, 2011 1:35 pm

    Yep, he’s a Rough Rider.

  94. 99club March 17, 2011 1:47 pm

  95. gigi-hawaii March 17, 2011 1:48 pm

    SteveM,

yes, I recognize Arthur Misemer. He didn’t sign my annual, so he wasn’t in any of my classes, but I recognize his face. So few haoles at RHS back then.

    whitey,

I’m sorry that I didn’t respond to your posts, but I had shut down my computer after posting my last post and hadn’t seen yours. Then the blog went crazy for a few days…my rule is that I cannot post until I read all the comments, but when there are a zillion comments (very few actually about football) then I run out of free time just trying to catch up.

I don’t know how fast I type–it used to be really fast when I was a computer programmer, but I think my wife types much faster than me (she put herself through college by working as a secretary).

  102. Garret March 17, 2011 2:04 pm

In fact, if Florida’s governor gets his way *all* middle school and high school sports will be eliminated. Wow, that would really change college sports across the country!

  103. Garret March 17, 2011 2:05 pm

Florida’s Republican governor also rejected the $2.4 billion that the federal government wanted to give them for a high-speed rail system. Pres. Obama now says that any state can apply for the $2.4 billion…that sure would put a *lot* of people to work in Hawaii and pay for a big chunk or all of Hawaii’s rail project.

  104. jm2375 March 17, 2011 2:07 pm

Garret – the Florida gov must not have been an athlete. 🙄 Guess they need a Save Our Sports fund too.

  105. Garret March 17, 2011 2:08 pm

It is great that Chad Ikei is moving back to Hawaii. UH can benefit a lot from his expertise and it would be nice for UH athletes to train in Hawaii instead of Arizona.

A few hours ago, I agreed to help put on a MAJOR fundraiser at Restaurant Row this Saturday to help support relief efforts by the Red Cross for Japan. The event will run from 4 pm to 10:30 pm so please drop on by either on your way to or from the University regardless of which sporting event(s) you’ll be attending. Please bring your checkbooks or debit/credit cars and take the opportunity to spread some Special Aloha. If you cannot attend the event but want to make a donation, there are a number of ways to do so. All the major banks have set up accounts.

In addition to the live entertainment – including taiko drumming by Kenny Endo’s group – you can bid in a silent auction and enter the drawing for some really super prizes, including a trip to Las Vegas.

Again – does anyone want our baseball tickets for Saturday? If so, send me an e-mail to swood at hoku dot com. Please include your complete name and contact telephone number and I’ll leave them at the Will Call window.

If no wants them, then I’ll just stop by The Les on my way over to The Stan and give them away.

And, of course, the other answer is: Because it tastes great.

I think that Hingson Chun is the same guy that was the smartest fella in my 1st and 2nd grade classes at Lincoln Elementary. Although Hingson had kind of an “oh shucks not me” type of attitude. That used to make Gary Gill very jealous and angry.

Florida’s governor is looking to make *huge* cuts to their education budget to balance their budget. Among the cuts are high school football and band.

I found it interesting that HuffPo is seemingly so concerned now with HSFB; can’t ever recall Arianna pictured at Friday Night Lights! In fact, except for using it to promote their own interests I really doubt that most readers of HuffPo actually give a rip about HSFB players.

I haven’t read the actual budget but it seems that the “spin” is coming from those who are resisting a reduction in the overall budget by scare-mongering folks in FL with something that will elicit a visceral reaction to the Gov’s plan.

Scott is reducing per-pupil K-12 spending by $703 – a roughly 10 percent reduction from current spending. But school boards say the governor’s office has informed them that, since he’s proposing to reduce taxpayer-backed pension costs, school boards can use the savings to boost spending.

    Read more: http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/02/07/v-fullstory/2054753/gov-scott-to-unveil-budget-with.html#ixzz1GumnCT8Z

It actually seems to be individual school boards that are listing sports as part of a list of items under consideration for reduction or elimination.

School boards across Northeast Florida are crunching the numbers, trying to come up with a way to reduce the budget while still providing a quality education for students.

The Duval County School Board estimates that if Gov. Rick Scott’s budget recommendation passes the Florida Legislature, it would have to cut $97 million from next year’s budget.

Cost-saving ideas being discussed by Duval County school administrators include changing to a four-day school week, eliminating art, music and physical education in elementary schools and cutting sports from middle and high school.

    http://www.news4jax.com/news/27191834/detail.html

..of course they leave out the part about reducing tax-payer funded pension contributions to balance the cuts.

  144. J March 17, 2011 5:12 pm

“Ironically, the most sensible extracurricular activity to be eliminated would be the most controversial … Football. Yes … it’s excessively expensive compared to other sports, it’s played only by one sex — boys — and the evidence grows regularly now that it is a terribly dangerous sport, rife with concussions, which can damage young brains. There must be a good reason why virtually nowhere else in the world is what is distinctively called “American football” played.

Now, the hue and cry that would go up if schools started trying to drop our favorite sport would be at the mega-level. It would, in fact, be called “un-American” — and would probably produce more hysteria than raising taxes would. But from a strictly realistic, cost-effective, health-effective, culture-effective point of view, it would make the most sense to drop football. That would allow art and music to remain in school, and divert boys into safer athletic exercise.

Or look at it this way. If administrators actually threatened to eliminate football, the football people might finally have to try and take the deadly violence out of the game.”

Actually, their bigger issue is fielding. Notwithstanding the losses, Parnaby’s and Rickett’s ERA are low — because of the errors. Look at Mel’s fielding percentage at 3B and Iwata at SS.

Yes, some are struggling at the plate, but the errors are compounding their problems this year.

  180. Da Punchbowl Kid March 17, 2011 9:28 pm

    Hilarious even!

  181. Derek March 17, 2011 9:39 pm

If you can’t do the basics, you can’t win. Period. Field, throw, catch, and hit. Too many strikeouts and too many swinging for the fences. This Wahine team doesn’t mirror last year’s team. Not even close. The facts are that this team’s chemistry is lacking. I have a feeling that they just thought they could show up and win games easily. Not so fast. It’s good to have some humble pie sometimes, but they have to snap out of it. But, the trends are not good. This team cannot hit to save their souls compared to last year. They don’t seem to be able to execute the samll ball fundamentals well.

  182. Andrew A. Sailer March 17, 2011 9:49 pm

    That softball guy is weird.

  183. WahineSoftballFan March 17, 2011 9:57 pm

After todays debacle at the hands of BYU and Iona, there is a good chance the Wahine will not be playing on Saturday.

  184. WahineSoftballFan March 17, 2011 10:00 pm

It is a good thing Pomai and Kazz did not attend todays games it would have made them sick, especially the Iona game. The Wahine had the bases loaded 3 times and could not even score, at least twice with no one out.

They will be quite fortunate to be still in the rankings come next week. How far have they fallen.

  185. LizKauai -iPad March 17, 2011 10:10 pm

When you want to see someone succeed, you love them, encourage them and support them.

When you want them to fail, criticize, denegrate, backbit and wish them ill.

But be careful. What one wishes upon others becomes one’s own fate.

  186. sportsforfun March 17, 2011 10:27 pm

The way UCSB got manhandled by the Gators today, it seems to me that Hawai’i is going a step down in conference play concerning bball in the Big West. Not a lot of respect for the Big West as UCSB was seeded 15th in the NCAA Tourney. They actually played like a play-in 16th seed. Regular season champion LBSU went to the NIT and lost in the first round to Washington State badly. Hopefully things will be more competitive next year. Or maybe Hawai’i can win the Big West and go dancing in a couple of years, if not next year, its last year in the WAC.

With the new recruits who committed to UH coming in, hopefully the chemistry of the team will be great next year. It will be interesting to see how the team responds to Miah coming in late December. Hopefully it will be like this year where the team rises up to another level of play.

  198. gigi-hawaii March 17, 2011 10:45 pm

I have never watched Miah play, though I have read about him in the newspaper and here on the blog. So, when hubby told me Miah is just 5’8″ tall, I was surprised. Is that true?

How can such a short person energize the team so well????

Hubby said Miah would probably qualify for the NFL than for the NBA because of his height. Good luck to him!

  199. LizKauai (macbook) March 17, 2011 10:46 pm

    gigi- Think Steve Nash.

  200. gigi-hawaii March 17, 2011 10:47 pm

    Liz,

isn’t Nash at least 6 feet, though? Love, love, love the guy!!!

Sion Milosky – RIP – God Bless!

  202. sportsforfun March 17, 2011 10:50 pm

Yes, Steve Nash is 6′, but he is such a great passer. He does make his teammates better in Phoenix. I think Miah is the same to the UH bball team. He makes them go offensively. He knows where to place the ball to make it easier for his teammates to score.

  203. sportsforfun March 17, 2011 10:53 pm

Miah will be defending Rashad Green who is 6’4″, and is a scorer for the Dons. It will be a great challenge for Miah!

The current Head Coach for the Dons is Rex Walters. He is in his third year there. He played at Kansas and in the NBA as the point guard. The Dons have an overtime win over Gonzaga this year, 81-77, and lost to them in the WCC Tourney, 67-71.

  211. SteveM March 17, 2011 11:04 pm

On this day (March 17) in the first year (2007) of The Warrior Beat blog … a drop to 163 comments on yet another “no schedule/Fire HF” day and no night shift. gigi-hawaii hides her neutrality in the HF issues, resulting in 40 comments and at least 3 letters to the newspapers.

    Comment from: gigi-hawaii [Visitor]

As for the contract with HF — the Regents found a way to get rid of Dobelle and still pay him less than his contract allowed, am I not correct? Also, the same for von Appen?

If so, surely something can be worked out for HF.

That man is a bumbling idiot.

    03/17/07 @ 13:37

    Comment from: gigi-hawaii [Visitor]

I plan to write a letter to Kitty. I will call UH admin on Monday to get her address. I think if we all did that, the regents would be put on notice BEFORE a disaster strikes and we end up with 3 Div 1-AA teams.

    03/17/07 @ 15:04

    Comment from: gigi-hawaii [Visitor]

In fact, I will also write to President McCain. Maybe he will change his grade for HF’s performance from an A to an F.

    03/17/07 @ 15:06

    Comment from: Stephen [Member]

It appears Frazier’s critics want him fired. It appears his supporters want to talk about his good deeds.

But those seem to be side arguments as to why Frazier is mentioned in a football blog in the first place. The real issue is the schedule. Let’s work a compromise. When debating the schedule, let’s take “firing” and “but he had a balanced budget for FY 2006” off the table. At least for the rest of the day. Tomorrow we can have free play.

    03/17/07 @ 15:07

    Comment from: gigi-hawaii [Visitor]

I’m not sure about getting to a BCS game, but I sure would like UH to capture the Heisman and WAC title. Is that too much to ask?

    03/17/07 @ 15:21

    Comment from: Kazz [Visitor]

    ST,

“Free play”… kinda like leaving a lit match in charge of dynamite huh? =p

    03/17/07 @ 15:35

    Comment from: Stephen [Member]

It would help recruiting tremendously if UH had a Heisman finalist. Being a finalist is just as important as being a winner.

    03/17/07 @ 15:49

    Comment from: Garret [Visitor]

The schedule can ruin any chance at a BCS bid, because it is the BCS ranking, not the AP or other voted-on ranking that UH has to be #14 or better. The BCS rankings factor in strength of schedule, and the computer rankings factor in opponent strength. The WAC has too many lower-tier programs to have a good strength of schedule, which is why UH needs quality non-conference opponents. BSU played a weak schedule last year, but that schedule would look amazingly difficult compared to 2 1AA schools, UNLV, Washington, and some mediocre or poor 1A school.

You’ve probably read articles about how teams are much lower in the BCS standings than they are ranked “because the computers don’t like them.” It isn’t their personality the computers don’t like, it is easy to figure out why it occurs. UH could be ranked #7 in the country (see where BSU was last year while undefeated) and not make the BCS cut due to the non-voting factors.

    03/17/07 @ 15:59

    Comment from: gigi-hawaii [Visitor]

so what should I say in my letters to Kitty and David? Should I wait til the schedule is finalized or write to them next week?

    03/17/07 @ 16:00

    Comment from: 702WarriorNation [Visitor]

    gigi,

Why not include new UHM Chancellor V. Hinshaw since she plans to be “highly visible and accessible” and wants to begin by “listening and learning and absorbing the culture” along with Pres. and BOR Chairwoman.

I believe she starts sometime in July 1st, why not learn earlier about local issues.

    03/17/07 @ 17:15

    Comment from: gigi-hawaii [Visitor]

good idea. I will include Hinshaw.

Gigi, Steve Nash is on the injured reserve list for the Phoenix Suns. The only way D’Antoni can get Nash is through a trade.

  215. gigi-hawaii March 17, 2011 11:10 pm

I didn’t know he’s still injured. That sucks.

  216. papajoe2 March 17, 2011 11:10 pm

Is Miah really defending the 6’4′ Green? Why wouldn’t Wiseman? He is 6’7″ and usually defends the opponents better guard. Also, maybe Miah’s quickness will frustrate Green, but I’m sure other teams tried to figure a way to stop him with bigger people too and didn’t do so well.

  217. WahineSoftballFan March 17, 2011 11:12 pm

Miah is listed at 5’9, but more like 5’7, with a very long wing span, and extremely large hands. If he does not make the NFL, he will definite have a future in the CFL. But who is to say he could not make the NBA, there have been smaller guards that have played in the NBA, within the last 20 years or so.

  218. SteveM March 17, 2011 11:14 pm

Just read in Brian McInnis’s blog that Men’s Basketball cannot host a 3rd round game, if it beats USF, cause of a Robotics convention being held at SSC. Why not move the Robotics convention to the NBC Arena. Thought SSC was built for UH Sports Events. Hey, UHAD, this is the post season, not a regular season game.

YOUR SUPPORT IS NEEDED IN THESE TRYING FINANCIAL TIMES!!

On Monday, March 21, at 1:30 pm, the State Senate Education Committee chaired by Senator Jill Tokuda will be hearing HB 1322 HD2 – RELATING TO CERTAIN FUNDS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII.

The meeting notice provides information as to how to submit testimony. A number of funds were eliminated and others like this one were updated. The original statute for this fund can be seen by clicking on the bill number itself.

Although I plan to submit written testimony, I will not be able to attend the hearing as I am scheduled for outpatient surgery Monday morning to correct a significant hearing loss in my left ear. The surgeon is brought in to Kaiser’s Hawai`i Region twice a year from SoCal so I had to take what was offered in terms of the appointment.

If you can show up in person and express your support, your actions would be greatly appreciated. The hearing should last no longer than an hour.

Click this link for detailed information including the Status Report.

    http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/session2011/hearingnotices/HEARING_EDU_03-21-11_.HTM

    HB 1322, HD2 Converts certain revolving funds of the University of Hawaii into special funds;

repeals certain funds of the University of Hawaii and transfers the remaining balances to specified alternate funds. Effective on July 1, 2030. (HB1322 HD2)

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. Chapter 304A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding six new sections to subpart C of part V to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

304A-D University of Hawaii at Nanoa intercollegiate athletics special fund and University of Hawaii at Hilo intercollegiate athletics special fund. Notwithstanding any other law to the contrary, there are established the University of Hawaii at Manoa intercollegiate athletics special fund and the University of Hawaii at Hilo intercollegiate athletics special fund for the intercollegiate athletic programs of the University of Hawaii at Manoa and the University of Hawaii at Hilo, which shall be used to receive, deposit, disburse, and account for funds from the activities of the intercollegiate athletic programs. The university may establish appropriate charges for activities related to its athletic programs and the use of its athletic facilities, the proceeds from which shall be deposited into these special funds.

The university shall maintain the financial integrity and viability of these special funds, including the maintenance of an adequate reserve to cope with the various factors that impact the revenue structure of an intercollegiate athletic program.

According to the House Higher Education Committee Report: The purpose of this bill is to help create increased efficiency in the use and management of certain funds of the University of Hawaii (UH) by reclassifying and repealing certain revolving and special funds.

BACK TO SPORTS: What a disappointing pair of losses tonight. The losses were not blowouts but a combination of outstanding pitching, errata on our part, a serious need to upgrade the catcher’s position, and some significant high winds. Still, I’ll be there tomorrow afternoon around 4 pm continuing to support the team.

Remember, even the greatest diamond sports players blow their at-bats more than 50% of the time.

Someone asked if truTV was available as a TV channel anywhere. Court TV started in 1991, was bought by Time Warner (the owners of Oceanic) in 2006, and was renamed by Time Warner truTV in 2008.

It has been available in HD by Dish for a couple of years now I believe. AT&T U-verse, Comcast, Time Warner, Cox Cable, Cablevision and Verizon FiOS also offer it. DirecTV has a part-time HD channel for it to show the NCAA tournament. I don’t know if Time Warner Oceanic offers the channel in Hawaii, but it is available from Time Warner on the mainland.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

  263. rosetta stone software March 20, 2011 7:29 pm

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  264. rosetta stone v3 March 20, 2011 8:59 pm

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
