Outta their league

Looks like Utah State and San Jose State are  heading to the Mountain West Conference, and Louisiana Tech is bound for the Conference USA.

Which means:

• UH needs to relocate its non-football sports to the MWC. There’s safety in numbers.

• There will be awkward moments when SJSU leaders, who bashed UH officials for ditching the WAC, attend MWC meetings.

• It sucks to be New Mexico State.

* * * * *

If the WAC disbands as a football conference before June 30, does UH get to collect its share of league money?

* * * * *

Each UH coach has studied video of the Warrior Bowl.

For most of today, the coaches will watch the videos together, then evaluate the players’ performance during the spring. The ratings should be interesting.

If non-football sports go to the MWC, I wonder what kind of extortion/subsidies we’ll have to pay.

  4. jm2375 (Infuse) April 30, 2012 12:36 am

    Howzit Tsaikos!

I dunno. I still like the idea of being in the Big West. Less travel, less weather concerns, no altitude concerns. But I’m not the decision maker, so I’ll just go with the flow.

  5. Stephen Tsai April 30, 2012 12:40 am

I like the idea of the Big West. But if the MWC ever had to downsize, it’s easier to boot the school with only one team.

  6. HiFlyer April 30, 2012 12:40 am

Morning or late night to all.

don’t forget to vote, the Bama folks are awake and voting.

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  10. Stephen Tsai April 30, 2012 1:35 am

I did not realize that the fans’ vote accounts for only a third. NCAA coaches and national media each have a third of the vote.

  11. wafan April 30, 2012 2:06 am

I wonder if the FSU coach will vote for Steph? And what kind of national press has Steph received thus far?

    No matter.

Still voting like crazy. This fan supports her!!!

  12. PowderPuff April 30, 2012 2:12 am

Whoa…wow! I guess the jaunts to wine country post-/pre-game aren’t over. How interesting! Happy Monday, everyone!

  13. wafan April 30, 2012 2:35 am

Hopefully a more equitable solution of pay-to-play can be found with the additions of SJSU and USU.

Is the MWC and CUSA merger (is that the current word being used?) still on? Or is something else in the works?

  14. wafan April 30, 2012 2:41 am

Dang. It really sucks to be UI and NMSU. Will they drop football, drop a level, beg to join a conference/league, or eventually be invited to either the MWC or CUSA.

Thanks for the turmoil AQ and BCS.

  15. Wes'side Warrior April 30, 2012 3:08 am

    Howzit, everyone!

Looks like the rumblings are still rumbling…

Everyone is stabbing at each other, trying to be the one (best) standing at the door, while the BCS keeps chugging along, like nothing happened… as long as no one touches their money.

So sad. Most of the country has lost sight of what’s right, with all this mega money obscuring the view.

Well, let’s get to the votes…

Wow. This is huge. Is this the end of the WAC?

  19. bleedgreen April 30, 2012 5:44 am

Hawaii’s opening game against USC may have long-term ramifications. Losing big-time may put Hawaii one step closer to the exit door (if there is to be down-sizing). But putting up a respectable performance against the preseason No. 1 secures its place at the table (for now). Hawaii also needs to have good performances against league members like Wyoming, Colorado St. and atone for its loss against UNLV last year. Coach Chow needs to find a starting QB early in fall practice to give that player as many reps before the start of the season. Graves has been a disappointment so far. Maybe Ikaika will emerge.

  33. chawan_cut April 30, 2012 7:27 am

wait, so what’s the count of MWC members now? will there be too many teams to play each team?

  34. Stephen Tsai April 30, 2012 7:27 am

I’m all for subsidies to teams that would usually charter here. Otherwise it would be like giving limo money to people who usually catch the bus.

  35. Stephen Tsai April 30, 2012 7:30 am

I think it will be 10 teams, which isn’t good. An odd number is better for football because it gives you an even split of road/home games.

  36. HawaiiMongoose April 30, 2012 7:32 am

I doubt that UH needs to worry about the MWC downsizing. Given the national trend toward larger football conferences, the MWC will probably want to expand to 12 at some point, and has just about run out of options. Also UH and Nevada are needed for the MWC’s credibility; they are the only teams in the new MWC to have finished in the BCS top 25 in the past ten years.

Moreover the Big East is still looking for a 14th football member, with the preference being a western school that would join for football only. If it can’t land BYU or Air Force, its likely third choice will be Fresno State, which (like San Diego State) would move its non-football sports to the Big West.

So for now, I think UH should stick with the Big West for non-football sports. San Diego State is already there and Fresno State may be coming. Putting non-football sports in the MWC could backfire if Fresno State leaves and UH ends up with San Jose State as its only California-based conference mate.

  37. BG April 30, 2012 7:37 am

I like the fact that Cal is back at it. The more votes in the pool, the harder it is to move the percentage gauge. If we’re maintaining, we’re winning! Also, it dropped Bama BACK a couple of tenths.

  38. BG April 30, 2012 7:40 am

with UH having to pay travel subsidies, of which i feel we are being totally ripped off, there is no way we can afford to pay subsidies for all our sports out of the MWC. as it is, if our major sports don’t do well and draw large paying crowds, our athletic department will be in even more dire straits than it is now.

  55. kev-1 April 30, 2012 9:22 am

I like non-football sports to the MWC. Before it sounded like a bad idea because of travel, but more and more it is looking lke there will be some sort of western division. Travel wouldn’t be that much worse than the Big West.

  56. kev-1 April 30, 2012 9:25 am

Karl Benson will probably be inviting the remaining WAC schools to the Sun Belt if he hasn’t already.

Re: tsboy…whether we like it or not, we have to entice MWC or any other football program to come to Hawaii and pay them tvl. subsidies…just remember one thing, we need them more than they need us…..if we don’t offer any incentive for them to come to Hawaii, why should they come…like I said, we need them ….for that matter, any conference, more than they need us….unfortunately, that’s the price we pay because of our distance…from the other programs…..think about it…….

This is the trouble with offers. UH thought it was buying into the MWC. Instead it’s getting the re-labeled WAC. Too late to say, nah-nah-nevahmind. Although I am puzzled how Texas-San Antonio managed to bail on the WAC.

  61. kev-1 April 30, 2012 9:56 am

ST – Pretty sure Texas-San Antonio doesn’t have to pay the WAC a penalty either. How’d they pull that off?

  62. A-House April 30, 2012 10:12 am

If the WAC folds before June 30, 2012, will UH get its share of the remaining cash inasmuch as UH moves to MWC on 7/1/2012?

Until UH becomes the “prom queen” it will always be the “outsider looking in” in all $$$ negotiations.

Perhaps, and just perhaps, no matter how loudly we yell for UH it may be a moot point. If UH gets to strong, other teams will stay away (hopefully not for all sports). If UH is the door mat, visiting teams will always demand $$$ compensation to play games in Hawaii. Where or where are the “large” donors or many smaller donors to give UH a bottom line “profit” in all sports.

  63. HiFlyer April 30, 2012 10:29 am

  67. BG April 30, 2012 12:29 pm

What a team! For the time being, it looks like Bama and Cal’s pushes have been stalled and pushed back. It’s weird when you can’t see your team members but can see the results! You just have to trust that they’re there and doing their part…just like a real true-to-life sport team. Let’s be consistent and keep the votes coming in daily…and be ready to hit back when they come at us hard.

They’ll probably be a least a couple more big efforts on their (Cal and Bama) part in the coming weeks. If we can hold the line and push back at them, they just might get discouraged. Whatevah they get…bring it on!!!

  68. Bugaz April 30, 2012 12:30 pm

  69. Kaneohe Resident April 30, 2012 12:31 pm

Changing the subject to UH Softball, on Saturday after the second game on television, I think I witness the best display of sportmanship and class by an visiting team, Fresno State. The entire team and coaches lined up along the first base line and stood there the during the entire Senior Day ceremonies. Nice of UH to give their seniors a lei making them a part of the ceremony. During the entire UH senior’s presentation, Fresno stood attentively and clapped each time a UH senior was recognized. Truly a credit to their coach and school.

Truly a class act! Thank you Fresno State.

  70. Bugaz April 30, 2012 12:31 pm

But that being said, KEEP VOTING!

  72. kev-1 April 30, 2012 12:51 pm

Jets seem to have their eye on the Warriors. It seems they often offer FA deals to former Warriors, even if they don’t stick. ST must be using his connections.

    WooHoo!!! 29. Time for break.

  74. A-House April 30, 2012 12:56 pm

Certainly appears that the “new” MWC will be the old WAC with the addition of a few schools since the “breakaway stealth move” by 8 presidents who met incognito at an airport about 10 years ago.

Except, now, if MWC commish gets his way, UH has to pay ‘travel expenses’ for the old WAC members. I personally think this really SUCKS!!!!!!!

Yet, when they got you by the “alas” what can you do?

  75. RedZone April 30, 2012 1:00 pm

I am thinking maybe Shanahan maybe seeing another Maa in Vaughn.

  76. RedZone April 30, 2012 1:03 pm

Join the Big East. They are taking anyone. We would also get the opportunity to play mighty Memphis. Seems like the old WAC moving east. They should’ve just renamed the conference the EAC instead.

  77. A-House April 30, 2012 1:11 pm

continuing #74, how important, really, is playing D1 football to UH Pres and Board of Regents and State of Hawaii?

likewise, how important is it to “fill” Aloha Stadium on game day/night? seems to me that back in Sep 1968, there were more fans at the ‘termite palace’ playing D2 ball than is currently at Aloha Stadium at D1 level.

demographically, what has turned the “crowd” away from UH football? economics? heck, one pays more for a “round trip” to Vegas on Hawaiian than the endzone seats, yet more people keep going to Vegas. lack of a “good or great product”?

fan base? could be as the “aging population” which supported the 60s and 70s teams are very old or have left us. one does wonder what would happend if, say The Ohio State or USC or LSU or Texas, moved down to D2 ball – will this erode their fan base? significantly reduce donations?

ah, yes, the wonder of a computer and time to kill.

  78. BG April 30, 2012 1:12 pm

    tommui, RedZone

When a lot of votes are coming in we kinda stalemate each other. When Bama and Cal ran out of steam, we started to inch up. Great way to discourage them…make them feel like they can’t win and should spend their time doing something else rather than voting. That’s why it’s so important to hit the 7pm to 10pm time slot hard. They go to sleep and we can score bigtime. When they get up, they have the “Oh no!” reaction.

It’s all the Hawaii fans out there who are consistent and persistent. We’re taking the fight to Cal and Bama and we’ll see who quits first…ain’t going to be us!

  79. BigHiloFan2 April 30, 2012 1:22 pm

to me, the reason in the past for the apathy was.. LOSING IS BORING!!!

    kill fight is BORING.

now, at least things are thinking positive. less chance for boring.

  80. Jeff April 30, 2012 1:33 pm

The ugly truth is that Hawaii is very much a frontrunners town. Hawaii has too many casual fans who only show up when the team is winning, and not enough die hard fans who show up win or lose. Just look at how quickly the football attendance dropped last season when the team started losing.

  82. kev-1 April 30, 2012 2:05 pm

A-House . . . you’re not trying to make a legitimate argument for the program to go backwards are you? And I’m too young to know, but I can’t imagine that the old stadium held as many people as Aloha Stadium in order for you to make that kind of comparison (but I really have no idea).

I definitely agree with you that travel subsidies sucks, but what can UH do. It really does seem like UH got played by switching conferences into what we thought was a better conference and now looks like our old one. But imagine if UH never switch. Where would we be now? Begging for a spot in the MWC I bet.

Cannot go backwards. UH football has been on the verge of climbing into the big time for years. We have had set backs the past few years, but don’t forget the national attention we used to get when JJ was here. Can we get back there? I don’t know. But do should we intentionally go backwards. No way.

  83. oldtimer808 April 30, 2012 2:20 pm

Hmmmm I agree with you Kev-1. I recall those days at the old Honolulu Stadium and I never saw a crowd larger than a few thousand attending UH games watching them play Humbolt State or Redlands University. The termite palace only held up to 26000 if you squeeze into those wooden bench seats.

  84. al April 30, 2012 2:23 pm

old honolulu stadium aka termite palace had seating for 24-25k.

some turkey day games would find the. stadium stuffed to 28k on occasion as everyone would squish together on the bench seating.

i think elvis presley held the attendance record back in the day.

but, no uh game filled that place up. lucky if 10,000 showed up back in 1968.

  85. al April 30, 2012 2:26 pm

in the late 50’s and early 60’s perhaps 1,000 showed up to watch the games for uh.

  86. RedZone April 30, 2012 2:33 pm

I don’t think that the fans really started coming until we moved to Aloha Stadium and Dick Tomey was the coach. That is when the tailgating started. We used to spend almost all day at the stadium. Eat, sleep, get up, eat then go to the game, then eat again after the game. I remember the line was so long at the Sanitoy that 2 guys would go in at once just to speed things up. Of course everyone in line would be applauding when that happened.

  87. RedZone April 30, 2012 2:35 pm

al is right. I remember around 2,000. There was a game on a wet windy night where 2 friends and myself were the only ones sitting in a whole section.

  88. homey ℞ April 30, 2012 2:39 pm

Perhaps A-House has Elvis mixed up with the Rainbows.

  89. oldtimer808 April 30, 2012 2:49 pm

I went to the 1963 Turkey game Farrington vs Kamehameha with Bob Apisa the primary running back for Farrington and Kamehameha with their huge offensive line. There were up to 27000 for that game. Rockne Freitas was on the offensive line for Kamehameha.

  90. oldtimer808 April 30, 2012 2:51 pm

But sorry UH was not the main game in town back in those days and even Radford drew a huge crowd in 1963 or was it 62 with Himmer Henry in the back field.

  91. oldtimer808 April 30, 2012 2:52 pm

I think it was Tokuhama at quarterback and Mel Saunders at full back for Radford.

  92. oldtimer808 April 30, 2012 2:55 pm

Thinking about the termite palace with all those termites flying around the lights during the Hawaii Islander baseball games and falling around you. The old mom and pop stores with their ono shave ice and boiled peanuts.

Folks, Bama is making a big push tonight. Gotta fight a delaying action until about 7pm when they check out and we can go on offense. If you’re wanting to help out, please join us around 7 if not earlier. Mahalo

  103. BG April 30, 2012 3:26 pm

Bama is making a massive push…up nearly .7% in a little over an hour. That’s an enormous amount of votes coming in. We need reinforcements badly now and more people around 6:30-7:00pm. If we can’t stop them tonight, they’ll be encouraged and be back at us night after night. We have to discourage them by stopping them now. It’s up to us. Thanks for whatever help you can spare.

  104. wafan April 30, 2012 3:28 pm

    I think I have it.

    Dang.

  108. BG April 30, 2012 3:57 pm

If not interested in the voting for Steph, please skip this post

OK, here’s the latest damage report. Bama has gone up 1.3% and will probably reach around 1.5% before they start to slacken. that has pushed down .3%. Tonght could mean a 2% change in position. At that rate Steph will be passed before the week is over.

Now’s the time. If you’ve ever talked about supporting our athletes, now’s the time for action. EO NA TOA E. Bama must have mobilized hundred of people to push the huge amounts of votes through…thousands of votes to have made such a huge change. We may not be able to match the personnel numbers, but we certainly can make a difference. Tonight will be the test of how much heart we have. We should refuse to let them beat us.

  116. Kekoa April 30, 2012 4:48 pm

I got the *Red Alert* call from BG just awhile ago to mobilize for the big push for votes tonite. Get your friends, family and neighbors involved and show them what to do.

I’ve got to go now. But since I started, I noticed that #2 jumped up in one fell swoop by 0.4 to 24.4. Curious as to how that can happen. Steph maintained at 28.6.

  118. Haleakala April 30, 2012 4:51 pm

My mouse makes it easy. There are 2 buttons on the side. One makes the web page go backwards and the other makes it go forward. The slow part is typing in the the letters and numbers. I always have to look for the keys with the numbers.

  119. mo808 April 30, 2012 4:58 pm

Let’s Go Vote People!! BG, just got off work so can clock in to vote for the next couple hours for Steph. Let’s see if can get to 30 overnight. If can can right? Let’s try!

    @117 Makes one wonder ???????

  121. cheepono April 30, 2012 5:04 pm

wow bama chick is really surging.

  122. Ralph April 30, 2012 5:09 pm

Graham Watson on Yahoo Sports reported on possible options for Boise State’s non football program should the WAC implode with the exit of Utah State, San Jose State, La Tech and Texas SA- “Boise State might have to look at the Big Sky or Summit league for its non-football teams. The Big West already turned the Broncos down.”

I’m glad the BW turned down the Broncos, as the only non California team it would be in our best interest not to expand beyond California with “cost sharing” a one way proposition impacting UH bottom line.

  123. Ralph April 30, 2012 5:15 pm

Alabama 27.2 % , Ricketts 27.6%… what a surge for the Bama senior.

  124. jm2375 April 30, 2012 5:16 pm

B$U should have to “cost share” travel costs in the Big West. Isn’t it harder to get to Boise than to Honolulu?

  125. BG April 30, 2012 5:18 pm

I think this voting has officially become a farce. Someone will have to explain to me:

    1. How Bama can come up with the votes to move the percentage number 5% and still climbing? It has to be somewhere around 10,000. Didn’t softball was that popular in Tuskaloosa.

    2. Do all of the above in about 3.5 hrs on a Monday night.

I do believe Bama just a little too greedy.

  126. Haleakala April 30, 2012 5:26 pm

I would have to agree that kind of quick movement would be impossible except for having someone having direct control over the numbers, be it a hacker or someone that is in the office that’s administering the polls. Is Lowes based in the south?

  127. tommui April 30, 2012 5:27 pm

#125 BG = wish I knew. It’s the typing in the letters and numbers that we got to solve – is there a computer guru out there who would know how to defeat that step?

Incidentally, I have been typing away on Firefox and discovered that, after I vote, if I hit [ (bracket), I’m back at the vote button. Saves a step.

  128. Ralph April 30, 2012 5:31 pm

Bama passed us, let’s keep voting. While we vote, they will be getting ready to settle down for bed time.

  129. mcb April 30, 2012 5:34 pm

is it possible to vote more than once per day?

  130. Haleakala April 30, 2012 5:35 pm

Based upon posts 117 and 123, in 26 minutes the Bama girl jumped from24.4 to 27.2. We know how long it takes to jump even 0.1 percentage point. She jumps in leaps and bounds. Hmmm. I smell fish. It’s time for dinner.

  131. izzy April 30, 2012 5:42 pm

    Wow!

    Where’s my previous post?

  132. BG April 30, 2012 5:46 pm

Latest update is +7.1% for Bama in 4 hrs. That’s impossible…especially when the voting was still hot at 11pm CT (Tuskaloosa, AL) on a Monday night. I’ve sent an email to Lowe’s protesting what went on today. Might help to have others follow suit. If the Bama girl’s supporters had any sense they would have done it in small increments.

  133. BG April 30, 2012 5:47 pm

Ralph, I’m with you. What Bama does doesn’t control what we do.

  134. Ralph April 30, 2012 5:54 pm

  153. BG April 30, 2012 7:27 pm

    @oldtimer808

Yeah, we all know that everyone is voting multiple times…you can tell by the number of votes that come in all at one time. But, it’s one thing when people vote manually and another when it’s automated. Fan participation is great. It’s when it’s taken to the machine level that I protest. It had struck me as unusual weeks ago when Bama votes were coming in great quantities at 2-4 am their time. Having more people in Alabama has nothing to do with it when votes are coming in in incredible quantities at midnight. Kinda like going into a fight with your fists and having the opponent with a Star Wars laser sword.

I’m over being upset. I’m doing what I control and that’s voting. I have a glass of wine next to me and I’m having a good ‘ole time…every day is precious.

By the way, looking on the bright side of things, this means we all have the opportunity to continue going to a great tailgate whenever UH is playing at San Jose and enjoy the spectacle of a one-third to one-half of the fans in the stadium cheering for UH – just amazing)

Mattyboy . . . the thought has crossed my mind. Then again, when Coach said we were good at QB, Graves was playing better and we still had Shutter in the mix. I find it hard to believe that the thought hasn’t crossed his mind either. But with that said, I think Graves is a gamer and will turn it around.

All I know is that from what footage I saw, it didn’t look like the ball was coming out of anyone’s hand particulary well. I know the frosh was 4/5, but I saw one of his passes flying in full duck mode.

I think they will all throw the heck out of the ball between now and the fall and we may not be having this conversation come fall camp.

  163. kev-1 April 30, 2012 7:48 pm

Maybe the voting system is redirecting the votes of those breaking the rules by casting multiple votes to other candidates?

Not feeling too good about Hawaii’s quarterback situation and the debut in the MWC. Installing a pro style offense without a quarterback capable of running it properly sounds like disaster to me. Graves was recruited for a run and shoot offense as was most of the offense and I was not very impressed with his games last year. Just look at all the R&S quarterbacks that bombed when moving to a pro style offense. It’s starting to look like a long 2 years at the mid-bottom of the MWC. Hope Coach Kaumeyer’s defense can win enough games to get Hawaii to at least one bowl in the next couple of years. Keeping my fingers crossed but from here it’s not looking good.

It’s kinda funny because many people said last season that Graves didn’t really fit the RnS, which requires a QB to pocket sit and make many reads. Can’t forget that the RnS of last year was not the true RnS. Our offense was in search of a true identity. At least now we have that. I’m not in a panic yet. I have always thought it would be a tough couple of seasons, despite the excitement. I still think we will be competitive with a chance for the Hawaii Bowl.
