Out of the cold

In a whirlwind courtship, it took less than 48 hours for Dustin Adams to fall in love with the UH football program.

“I went up there last week, on Monday through Wednesday, and I toured the college and met all of the coaches,” said Adams, an offensive lineman at Minot High in North Dakota. “It felt good. That’s why I made my decision. Yep, I decided to become a Warrior.”

Adams will sign a letter of intent in February, then join the Warriors in July 2012.

As a junior in 2010, Adams played right tackle. He was named to the All-State team. One college scouting service rated Adams as North Dakota’s top offensive lineman.

A few years ago, a former associate alerted Gordy Shaw, now UH’s line coach, to a promising offensive lineman. At the time, Adams had just completed the eighth grade. This year, Shaw was reminded to check on Adams’ progress.

Adams said he is “almost 6-5” and weighs 285 pounds.

He projects as a college center or guard.

Adams said Shaw watched videos of Minot’s offense. After several e-mail exchanges, Adams was offered a recruiting visit.

“I loved everything about the trip,” Adams said. “I liked the coaches and the players. I got a chance to watch the players work out. I liked that. I got a chance to meet coach (Greg) McMackin. He’s a really cool guy, a stand-up guy.””

Adams said he had received interest from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Oregon and North Dakota. UH was the first I-A program to offer a scholarship.

Minot is located in central North Dakota. With a population of a little more than 40,000, it is the state’s fourth-largest city.

Adams plays basketball, and enjoys hunting and fishing. He hunts for geese, ducks and pheasants.

“I’m actually fishing right now,” Adams said during his cell phone interview with the WB. “We’re fishing out at Devils Lake. It’s about 2 hours east of Minot. We’re fishing out of a boat. We’re just trolling right now. We’re fishing for (Northern PIke).”

He said the weather has been nice lately in Minot, although earlier this year it was “cold, rainy and windy.”

He added: “I always wanted to go somewhere where it’s warm. It works out.”

Congrats to Lauren Cheape, a former UH swimmer and water polo player. She is the 2011 Miss Hawaii.

Cheatpe’s brother, Matthew Cheape, is a libero for the Warrior volleyball team.

Top 10? We survived a wild night, cable and electricity restored! Thanks for all your kind wishes for us Windward peeps. We are used to wild weather, but I’ll admit, this time I was a little scared.

It was a rope-a-dope. I figured it couldn’t rain hard forever, right?

It was amazing that none of the TV weather-guessers on Thursday predicted this weekend’s downpour and lightning show.

Happy Birthday to BG and belated birthday wishes to everyone else!

You guys may think Im crazy, but I miss thunderstorms like you guys just had. I can’t remember the last time we had a sustained thunderstorm here in Spokane. It usually just rolls through and that’s it.

  14. gmahoney June 5, 2011 6:51 am

ST, it is amazing. Bet it was a surprise to the weather guessers too.

  15. Stephen Tsai June 5, 2011 6:57 am

We were at the mall when it started to pour.

I splish-splashed my way to the car, brought it around to the covered spot where the wife was waiting. She was standing next to a couple arguing. The woman wanted the guy to splish-splash his way to the car. The guy didn’t want to go puddle jumping. So the wife gives them her umbrella.

    Good karma, right?

We get home … and the power goes out.

    For seven hours.

On the other hand, I didn’t get struck by lightning.

while we are talking football and fishing on devil’s lake, it kind of reminds me of these country boys that are raised in the boonies and love to fish and hunt….and play high school sports. bubba starling also comes to mind. the 6-5, 195# high school phenom from gardner, kansas. bubba fishes on his family pond nicely contained on their 20 acre property. oh, yeah, bubba is the local football star who has signed with nebraska, but is also in the running for mega millions in the summer ml baseball draft as a #1 draft pick. According to his growing legend, the modest, well-behaved Bubba hits 500-foot home runs, throws a football 55 yards from his knees and dunks over basketball players who stand half a foot taller. bubba also runs a 4.3 40 and scored 98 TDs in high school. who says white boyz cant jump or sprint fast? better check to see if they fish or hunt. something about the wide-spaced country that make kids like dustin and bubba special.

After Car Accident, Colonials’ Colt Brennan Back Throwing Passes

June 04, 2011|By PAUL DOYLE, pdoyle@courant.com, The Hartford Courant

MIDDLETOWN — There was no mistaking the sidearm sling delivering one spiral after another to the receivers auditioning for the Hartford Colonials.

A day after signing a contract with the Colonials, quarterback Colt Brennan was helping out at the team’s tryout camp Saturday at Middletown High. And amid players of all shapes, sizes and talent levels, Brennan’s crisp passes stood out.

The former Heisman Trophy finalist from Hawaii didn’t leave the field between drills, mingling with players he didn’t know and razzing those he did. Six months after a car accident left him in a coma, Brennan was in his favorite place.

  27. gigi-hawaii June 5, 2011 8:08 am

Liz, thanks for the story. So glad Colt is doing well.

  28. tommui June 5, 2011 8:13 am

it is said that the winner of game three after an opening 1-1 split has won the past 11, i believe, series since the format changed to the 2-3-2 home/away schedule.

i think a different miami heat team will step onto the floor tonight. they were embarassed the last time out.

I have seen players make that comment regarding Mack and the other coaches, but don’t know what that refers to.

Looks like Glanville wants 5 QB’s in preseason camp – lots of arms to help out in the passing drills.

” … Former Central Connecticut quarterback Aubrey Norris was also at the camp. … Besides Brennan, Colonials quarterback Jerrod Johnson and running back Andre Dixon were on the field watching. Johnson, the team’s No. 1 draft pick, also threw passes during receiver drills. … Glanville is hoping to sign two additional quarterbacks. Former Penn State quarterback Anthony Morelli impressed Glanville at Saturday’s tryout. “

It’s really exciting to see 5 active Warriors from little ole Kauai… I mean really. I love stuff that brings the island together. The traditional high school rivalry is set aside at times like this. It was beautiful to see the boys’ coaches and teachers and our head DOE guy and our UH Regent show up…

Haven’t felt that kind of aloha since the All-Kauai Rose Parade Band!

    Meat juhn today!

    There’s another one tonight.

I want to buy something COLORFUL for my wall.

  89. Kekoa June 5, 2011 12:18 pm

Ocean House Restaurant ~ Gigi, try the Lilikoi’i Misoyaki Butterfish. Hubby can tear into the Black Angus Prime Rib or any of the other excellent cuts of meat.

  90. LizKauai [iMac] m/ June 5, 2011 12:18 pm

gigi- There is a Korean family on Kauai that is making and selling kimchee at the Farmer’s Market. They were all out when I went but I got to taste a sample. MMMMM!!!! They had some zucchini jun left. Wow. It was DELICIOUS! I had it for dinner last night with a big salad.

I’m going to try to get to the Farmer Market next week so I can get some real kimchee!

  91. LizKauai [iMac] m/ June 5, 2011 12:19 pm

gigi- have fun at the art show.

  93. wafan June 5, 2011 12:23 pm

Been yearning for haupia for several months. I finally gave in and made some. Looks like some of the teachers will be sampling haupia tomorrow. For some of them if it is not meat and potatoes they will not touch it.

    Too bad for them!

  94. kawika49 June 5, 2011 12:26 pm

#93 should have made pani popo.

  95. gigi-hawaii June 5, 2011 12:26 pm

kekoa, thanks. Lilikoi and miso on butterfish — sounds like a winner!

  96. gigi-hawaii June 5, 2011 12:28 pm

Liz, zuchinni juhn — love it.

I used to make it, but too lazy to slave over the frying pan now.

    Will enjoy kimchee today. yum.

  97. wafan June 5, 2011 12:50 pm

    K49 . . .

Mmmm! Did not think about it because i was focused on haupia. But, it would not matter since those who would not eat the haupia still would not try the pani popo.

Really, either way, I come out the winner and they will never know what they are missing.

  98. wafan June 5, 2011 12:52 pm

    Funny talking about kim chee.

I bought some today at the Korean store. I think they must have just dug this batch up. Still needs to sit for a bit — too fresh. HA!

  103. wafan June 5, 2011 12:57 pm

The other year I made fresh malasadas at school. The “brave” ones enjoyed them. The ones that did not try them were upset because they said I tricked them by calling the doughnuts some weird name — they did not get any.

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  104. gigi-hawaii June 5, 2011 1:02 pm

  107. wafan June 5, 2011 1:15 pm

    GG . . .

Used to put on monster lu’aus at school. Brought in poi one year for folks to sample. The only folks thrilled were the transplants. HA!

  108. SteveM June 5, 2011 1:17 pm

I think there is more than one “Koa-Mahu”

I can vouch that (J)James and A-Joe were not the original Koa Mahu. I have a very short suspect list after that… 😛

I don’t know who the CURRENT “Koa Mahu” is… it might be more than one person– since I see the differences in syntax and sentence construction at times. Was JJ a Koa Mahu” poster at some time? Very likely

    Kekoa? unlikely

    Koakane? Very likely

Mentioning more names might start a war. 🙂

But I am curious to know who everyone thinks “Koa Mahu” could be…

    Have fun…

  109. Hawaiianbod June 5, 2011 1:37 pm

    ~Happy Birthday BG!~

    Welcome Dustin Adams!

    Congrads Devon! WOO HOO! P-A-R-T-Y!!!

  110. gigi-hawaii June 5, 2011 1:53 pm

everybody, watch da game of the century!

    GO MAVS!!!

  111. Kaimuki Kid June 5, 2011 1:57 pm

The Koa Mahu posting today is not James (jj) although he might posted as KM a few times in the past. The writing is wrong and has the wrong feel. Definitely a different poster

  112. Kaimuki Kid June 5, 2011 2:01 pm

    gigi,

Sorry to burst your bubble but the Heat let Mavs win game 2 thus prolonging the series and making the network and the sponsers happy. I am not a Heat fan either, just an observation.

  113. SteveM June 5, 2011 2:28 pm

Kaimuki Kid — you’re a long-time poster (since 2007) that I have never met in person (I think) 🙂 If you karaoke, cruise, or are going to Vegas this September, please send me an email: stevem.hnl (at) gmail.com

  114. Slugger June 5, 2011 2:33 pm

    Congratulations, Devon Tsai!

  115. koakane June 5, 2011 2:34 pm

    Just finished reading yesterday’s blog.

    A terrific blog host/hostess.

I have not heard the “KIKILOI” family name in 40+ years. I knew a Sam Kikiloi very well. A pure (100%) Hawaiian.

  156. Derek June 5, 2011 5:01 pm

Dustin, recently new UH basketball recruits have gone surfing with coach Gib Arnold. Are you game to do some surfing? Coach Miano can teach you.

  157. Dustin Adams June 5, 2011 5:11 pm

Ya I am down never have but what the heck I’ll give it a tru

  158. Kaimiloa June 5, 2011 5:12 pm

Welcome to the Warrior family, Dustin.

We don’t have any Pike here but you can sure troll around for some saltwater game. Most hunting is for wild pigs but on the Big Island you can hunt pheasant, franklins, quail, and turkey.

  159. Dustin Adams June 5, 2011 5:15 pm

Good I need some hunting haha.

  160. Da Punchbowl Kid June 5, 2011 5:16 pm

Btw – Forgot to mention, Dustin Adams looks like a great get! I like what I see of Coach Shaw’s efforts these past few years.

If Dustin’s already 285 lbs. imagine what a few years with coach Heffernan will do. Add good position coaching for those years and he should be a dominant O-lineman in the MWC down the road.

  161. Matt June 5, 2011 5:20 pm

There’s also deer, sheep, goat, and turkey hunting on various islands.

    http://www.state.hi.us/dlnr/dcre/know.htm

  162. Da Punchbowl Kid June 5, 2011 5:21 pm

Wow. I didn’t know you were here Dustin! Welcome to the blog and to the Warrior Nation! Can’t wait to see you hunt down some defensive ends!

  163. tommui June 5, 2011 5:21 pm

And best wishes to our new Miss Hawaii Lauren Cheape – a UH letterwinner as well as Shannon Dresser – also a UH letterwinner – both lovely ladies!

  164. Hawaiianbod June 5, 2011 5:24 pm

Welcome Dustin! What was on the training table tonight?

  165. Dustin Adams June 5, 2011 5:24 pm

Thanks again. Is everyone so nice there?

  170. Dustin Adams June 5, 2011 5:50 pm

Someone anyone please tell me all I need to know about Hawaii

  171. BG June 5, 2011 5:51 pm

Just got back from the University of Phoenix’s graduation at the Blaisdell. Awesome! My family, led by my biggest supporter (Betty), was very, very loud! Rushed home to get the grill going for a birthday party. I can’t get over how cool it is to get my MBA and have a birthday on the same day! Truly priceless. Betty has been cooking for the past two days for my party. I am so extraordinarily fortunate to have Betty’s support. My greatest achievements have been because of her commitment to allowing me to focus fully on the task at hand. Love you sweetheart!

  172. BG June 5, 2011 5:54 pm

Sincere thanks folks! Your well wishes are so appreciated!

  173. BG June 5, 2011 6:07 pm

    Dustin

Just like anywhere else, there are good folks and not-so-good folks (and those in between) here in Hawaii. Part of your education is going to be learning who’s who. Quite a few of us here at the Warriors Beat make it a point to meet each other instead of just posting faceless comments. That’s one big reason we interact like a big family. By “big family”, I mean we have bloggers here who are across the US and in foreign countries. On the other hand, there are some who post infrequently who are just not good neighbors. Most of us here are not the well-heeled supporters. But we manage to get quite a lot done on this internet blog (stories for the future). Hope that helps you a little bit. Bring your questions here and we’ll answer them as best we can.

  174. bigislandkurt June 5, 2011 6:07 pm

Awesome story on the North Dakota Kid. Yet similar reports on commitments of past years have forced me to be rather cautious when we are so early in the process. We’ll see if this kid stays true to his commitment or bolts to a warm weather BCS school if they offer. If he’s that good, they’ll offer for sure. Let’s just sit back and cross our fingers on this one. A team can never have enough good O linemen.

    BIK

  175. Dustin Adams June 5, 2011 6:14 pm

Trust me when I tell you bigislandkurt I ain’t going anywhere. I was sick of all the recruiting calls and mail and such. I went to Hawaii to check it out and you know that feeling when you feel at home? That’s how I felt. I am a warrior and always will be. I am the most honest person you might ever get to know. I am staying with my decision and I have stopped taking mail and calling coaches. I am fully committed to the warrior program. Thanks again.

  176. koakane June 5, 2011 6:16 pm

koa-mahu you get crabs and the ala wai hauna. no wonda

  180. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc June 5, 2011 6:33 pm

    Dustin:

Sorry 2b missing u in 2012 – but have a great time here in Hawai`i – including getting a degree.

  181. Dustin Adams June 5, 2011 6:34 pm

    Thanks Capitol

  182. Slugger June 5, 2011 6:41 pm

    Dustin,

It’s too bad we can’t feed you because of NCAA rules. But when you are here, you’ll eat food from many different cultures. Just have an open mind. Kalbi = Korean shortribs = YUM!

You’ll be living in Manoa where there are light rain showers year-round. I sat through a pouring rain at one of the practices before the Tulsa game. Still fun! Keep training with your teammates, outside of practice, too. Drive each other to greatness.

There’s a problem with Axis deer on the Big Island of Hawaii. Don’t know if you’ll be able to go there to hunt, but I sure hope the Dept. of Land & Natural Resources can gain concensus to erradicate the deer before they become widespread and destroy native vegetation. They were brought in illegally. You can probably get some of your Hawaii teammates to take you fishing. I don’t think we can. (NCAA again.)

Try to stay ahead of your reading assignments. Study hard, get that degree. Ask for help when you need it.

Looking forward to seeing you here!

  183. Dustin Adams June 5, 2011 6:44 pm

Thanks slugger look forward to being there to. Beats 30 below haha.

  184. Slugger June 5, 2011 6:47 pm

Yeah, I used to live where it could get to 15 below for 3 days in a row, but it may get up to 10 above during the day. Otherwise, AZ at 7,000 ft. isn’t too bad. Coach Shaw knows. He used to coach at the University I worked at.

  185. Dustin Adams June 5, 2011 6:48 pm

Ya me and him have become good friends.

  186. Slugger June 5, 2011 6:55 pm

    W-Doc,

    Sorry 2b missing u in 2012 – but have a great time here in Hawai`i …

Are you guys not going to football games in 2012?

  187. Slugger June 5, 2011 6:57 pm

    Dustin,

Discovery Channel has a program, “Hogs Gone Wild”, that includes pieces about hunting/capturing wild boar on the Big Island. You’ll get to see what it looks like there.

    And BG too!

  207. BG June 5, 2011 9:18 pm

Just got through with dinner with relatives. Betty served filet mignon cooked to individual tastes, succulent bbq pork ribs, crisp veggies (asparagus, broccoli, tossed salad), sashimi, french bread, home-made kimchi, fruits (sweet watermelon, cantalope, pineapple), sushi, and white rice. For dessert we had a wonderful ice cream cake and I broke out the B and B! For a nightcap, my daughter bought me a bottle of 16 yr old Lagavulin single malt scotch! Heavenly!

I hope Davon Tsai is also enjoying his graduation! Glad to be sharing a memorable day with him.

    BG

  208. BG June 5, 2011 9:21 pm

The induce why semi Ray ban sunglasses are so well-known is firmly linked to their trendy designs. For example, if someone shows up in an old pair of dirty Dunlops with kilties on them, it’s a pretty safe bet golf isn’t high on his priority list. Thank you Judkinsa for convincing me that home made ghillies are better than store bought. Hi,thanks for your post and luckly to comment in your site!To find a perfect pair of wedding shoes, you should put many things into consideration such as the weather, your gown style, the theme of your wedding etc. There are so many options in bridal shoes such as pumps, sling backs, snickers, pumps, wedges, sandals and stilettos in different styles and colors. If you cannot afford the best producer shoes that consist of Gucci, from the really very lowest you can acquire the replica Gucci shoes . Unless your bridal shoes are made from the same fabric as your gown, it might be a little difficult to get a perfect color match with your dress when shopping. MBT shoes are not critically a comparable as common shoe. SoftWalk shoes meld style and comfort though inspired, classic designs and a unique, shock-absorbing footbed that minimizes pain and fatigue often suffered from extended hours of walking or standing.

(There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
