Offensive tackle Sean Shigematsu was back walking three days after undergoing what was termed a “minor” knee procedure on Friday. Shigematsu, who can play both tackle positions and right guard, will be ready for the April 1 start of spring training.
Mike Milovale, UH’s starting left tackle in 2013, has completed his NCAA eligibility. But the Warriors appear to be deep at offensive tackle. Shigematsu, Leo Koloamatangi, David Griffin and Frank Loyd have started at tackle. Freshmen John Wa‘a and Elijah Tupai have drawn raves during offseason workouts.
Wa‘a redshirted in 2013. But he did well enough in practices he was named the Warriors’ scout player of the year for offense.
Tupai had a medical redshirt for 2013 after undergoing shoulder surgery. Each practice, players recovering from injuries are required to work in the “Pit,” a sideline area where they pull weighted sleds, heavy ropes or golf carts, as well as other exercises. The drills are the “physical” part of physical therapy. Tupai never minded, often smiling through workouts, and several times requested that more weight be added to the sleds. Yes, Tupai — literally — is skilled on pulls.

Being that Wittek is from USC, I am sure he enjoyed attending the men’s volleyball game on Friday night when UH beat UCLA. I wonder if he knows that we beat them again Saturday night?!? That could be the clincher!

This past weekend, game balls should have been given to “positive” talkers — A-Joe, PowderPuff and Stretch (on Saturday) — for their “conversations” during the match. I think there are a couple of Bruins thinking: “No, they didn’t say anything bad, but they were distracting …” They remind me of catchers who talk to batters during at-bats.
ST…Thanks for the clarification on the reason for Wittek’s early visit. As I said earlier, hope he left with a good impression of our program and coaches. Likewise, hope our coaches had a good feeling about Wittek.
Is it safe to assume it’s Texas vs UH in the Wittek recruiting?
Honestly, I like UH’s chances of getting Wittek vs Texas. Texas’ boosters and fan base are nuts and they may not care for a USC retread when they pull in good-great prospect QBs just about every year.
I saw Louisville and Pitt were mentioned on other sites, but haven’t heard anything beyond speculation.
8… I liked Teddy’s before they expanded. For me, they lost a little something when they moved out of their original Diamondhead location. Burgers are still good, but not the same feeling/atmosphere. Plus now they are getting close to fine dining prices.
Since we are on the fairly pricey sandwich food topic… I highly recommend the Kalua Pig-BLT at The Pineapple Room from the lunch menu. That thing is amazing.

Back to football… I like what I hear from Wa’a and Tupai. I think UH will get much better on the line overall, just gonna have to live some freshmen mistakes here and there. If the line improves, so will the entire offense. I think UH will be improved at QB no matter who wins the job. The players are more experienced and better talent coming in.
I’m excited to see what Klune & Gouvea bring to the defense.
Really, how could he (Wittek) not have had a good time? This is Hawaii for crying out loud! If he’s a business major, enroll him in the Shidler College of Business MBA program. Done deal. Is he an upgrade over what we have now? I dunno.
I hope the NCAA gives Shige his sixth year, after this season, should he choose to pursue it. He redshirted in 2010, then played 2 games in 2011 before suffering his season ending injury.
BTW, read that Rocky Long at SDSU has 5 QB’s on Scholie, non available but is still making a push to have Stephen Rivers of LSU WALKON with the Aztecs.

17. Total crap shoot but If I had to choose between 2 Qbs, I would take Rivers over Wittek.
It’s splitting hairs with not a lot of game to go off but I would take the QB who backed up a top 4 round NFL draft prospect as a redshirt FR over the QB who was his coaches fav to win the job and given the chance when Barkley went down and played himself out of the starting spot. The scouting report on Rivers is he has nice touch on his ball and accurate. Wittek on the other hand is the big arm guy that lacks accuracy. Holds ball too long.

I can’t believe its only between Texas and UH. Agree with others who say Texas is set with their starting QB. Wittek would go there and sit. Not sure of the situation at other schools mentioned like Louiville, etc. not sure if UH gets Wittek but I have a feeling we will land one of the available QB’s previously mentioned.

Speaking of offensive linemen, it was a pleasant surprise to see former Red Raider and Warrior, Brysen Ginlack at my fam’s business on Saturday.
He is currently playing and coaching with the Elecom Kobe Finies in the Japan X-League. He was here on a short vacay.
We got to do quite a bit of talking about the JJ and Mack and even the current coaching regime. Lets just say it was a very “enlightening” conversation filled with “hmmmm and oh my’s”.

18—Aloha All. I do think MauiWarrior is correct. In sum, The NCAA allows a one-time exception for graduate students that eliminates the sit-out year that accompanies most transfers. Thus, as long as the student player enrolls in a graduate program at UH that USC doesn’t offer, he can do a straight forward transfer.

If Gary Patterson remains committed to giving incoming freshmen Foster Sawyer and Grayson Muehlstein a shot at earning the starting job, then this story won’t really get interesting until both report to campus in June. For the spring, however, Tyler Matthews should get plenty of chances to shine and give coaches a reason to use Trevone Boykin elsewhere.

Nice post Mr. Tsai, love to read about the big guys up front. Looks like we’ll have some nice young talent and some experienced guys too. I imagine that the O-line is going to get stronger and stronger. Coach Nae’ole has done great so far, IMHO.
If we end up with a plug and play QB with a quick learning curve, offense should do well. It just a question of who we’ll end up with.

I think any transferring QB can eliminate teams early, but can’t make a commitment until after the semester is over. Then there’s the matter of being accepted into a school. That was the deal with Sean Schroeder. He chose Hawaii, but had to wait a while before being accepted.
I think Hawaii is happy with the guys already in the fold. I’m not so sure they’ll pursue another QB if Wittek decides to go elsewhere.

Maui & Boola, there are two graduate transfer exception rules. The rule you are citing applies to graduates who have previously transferred schools. In order to play immediately, the graduate must be accepted and enrolled in a specific graduate program not offered by the previous school. There is, however, a one-time exception for graduates that have not transferred previously (ala Sean Schroeder, Wittek & Rivers). Here’s where it gets complicated. This exception does not apply to sports such as football, men’s or women’s basketball or baseball, except, when the athlete has two years of athletic eligibility remaining. Russell Wilson HAD to transfer to a graduate program not offered by his previous school, because he had just one year of eligibility remaining. Schroeder, Wittek & Rivers have (had) two years of eligibility remaining. In order to utilize this exception, you must have redshirted one year, and graduated in three, with two years of eligibility remaining.
I agree that the Shidler College of Business cannot compare with USC’s Marshall School of Business, but Wittek wants out, so the comparison is moot. His goal (at this time) is the NFL, not corporate america.
Good point Mr.Tsai….while there’s so much excitement with possible QB transfers, the answer might already be on the team. Graham WAS recruited and part of a big name school. Woolsey is only going to be a Sophomore this year, but in his third year in this system so the maturity and knowledge may have developed with the work he’s put in.

Before the image fades too much, I wanted to bring up that photo that Stephen posted of Joey Iosefa and Scott Harding a little while ago. The former was described by Coach Chow last year as “the one player we couldn’t afford to lose (and we lost him)”–translation: MVP–while the other was voted the team’s MVP at season end. In short, the picture was a shot of our dual MVP threat heading into the 2014 season. I look forward very much to seeing both on the field again. It will be the last year for a couple of outstanding athletes who have really represented UH well.

I believe Mr. Ellison would not consider donating to Hawaii Athletics, but may consider donating to the University of Hawaii. But before taking serious consideration into simply moving money to the university, the university will have to demonstrate that its house is in order. Right now, it’s not.

Never took a course in higher math, but if someone only has 1,000,000,000 (a billion) and donates $100,000,000 or 10% but his principal generates around 15% or higher, I don’t believe his tax write-off is going to amount too much.
In regards to the frequent topic of the potential foundational monies Larry Ellison could provide, the following should be said: one, at this juncture he does not need a write-off at this stage of largesse. In fact, at very minimum, it would have to be in the high nine-figure range to make any appreciable dent as a deduction.
Moreover, the way the uber rich do estate planning and taxes is singular.For example, in 2009, 1,470 households reported income of more than $1 million but paid no federal income tax on it, through their use of various tax loopholes and shelters. Tax rates for millionaires have fallen by 25 percent since the mid-’90s, while one quarter of millionaires currently pay lower tax rates than the average middle-class household.
The more relevant point here, is whether their is value-added for Mr. Ellison, thus besides basic altruism, is it a topic/activity in which he has a vested interest. While he is certainly make a profound dent in Lana’i, recent history has shown that in terms of a university underwriting, he has only previously supported both Stanford and Harvard.
A person like Larry Ellison would have to be approached from the very top of the university, and the fact that we are in transition in that very position does not bode well for us. Further, success lends to success, and from that vantage we are not operating on a profoundly uneven playing field or perhaps, not even in the same zip code. Summarily, one would have to symmetrically articulate to Mr. Ellison an endeavor that overlaps with either something in his personal history or a contemporary interest; merely being in the same backyard is not sufficient.

warrior dave…from one mckinley alumni to another. it is one of the best kept secrets. not your typical canton cuisine. 2/3 of the menu is something you may never have heard of before. its a small quaint eatery and i suggest reservations especially friday – sunday.
the good thing is that you can bring your own ” beverages” anf they don’t charge a corkage. (no bar service)
