Open house

There was a period last year when linebacker TJ Taimatuia’s family experienced a cash shortage because of a medical situation. Without hesitation, Taimatuia gave his family the money designated for his dormitory room.

Teammates and friends allowed Taimatuia to sleep on their couches.

Now his family is doing well. So, too, is Taimatuia. He and three teammates are renting an apartment 5 minutes from campus. He also worked this summer to earn rainy-day money.

In a pay-it-forward move, Taimatuia and his roommates open their apartment to friends and teammates.

“Now I’m the guy if people need a place to sleep,” Taimatuia said. “Sometimes guys don’t want to drive all the way home, so they sleep over and go to practice in the morning.”

Taimatuia added: “Blessing with a blessing. People blessed me. In turn, I blessed them.”

The Pacific Northwest schools benefit so much from having Nike, Adidas, and Columbia Sportswear, etc concentrated in one area. Helps draw talent for careers in sports business because they could move around within the industry. Anyways, I would love to see UH get more swag. Rainy in Portland, no surprise.

SteveM and others who misunderstood my comments from last night . . .

When I said it was hard to “sift through the garbage to find football related talk” I wasn’t referring to non-football talk. I was referring to the inappropriate content that has been posted the past few days that some people mistake for humor. That’s all.

I meant no disrespect to others who post about non-football related info, like the F’s as you guys call them. I think that stuff is fine.

However, there are some here that think they can say inappropriate things about sexuality, “part” size, etc. and think it is ok because they do it in pidgin. No class. That’s all I am saying.

I tried to make that point last night, and someone else decided to post under my name “kev-1” to imply that I was crying.

I just want to read clean comments, whatever they’re about.

  15. boolakanaka September 27, 2013 7:42 am

I was reviewing the Ferd Lewis piece on the aspiration of the current AD to join the PAC12, and I have to say, with all due respect, how he came to that conclusion, is beyond me?? Now, let me preface this as both an alum and a player, but I evaluate this on three germane levels: endowment size, academic ranking and revenue or potential revenue flow.

Now, lets consider endowment size, if I were to just eliminate Stanford which would profoundly skew the average endowment at a PAC12 school, (BTW, its 17 billion), of the remaining schools, the average endowment is approximately a little over 900 million, with the next largest endowment at the U of W, with a little over 2 billion. The smallest endowment is at the U of A, and even that at 500 million is 3 times the size of UH.

Next, is the academic ranking, and in this, we are almost worst off than the endowment category, please see: Where Pac-12 universities place in the latest U.S. News & World Report national rankings:

    Stanford • 5

    Cal • 22

    USC • 23

    UCLA • 25

    Washington • 41

    Colorado • 86

    Washington State • 111

    Oregon • 111

    Arizona • 120

    Utah • 129

    Oregon State • 139

    Arizona State • 143

I have heard on the blog, and Ben Jay say it, that UH is a top 150 school, and for the life of me, I have looked at every article out in the higher education world, and not found that cited once.

Next, and this is the most clear category, being a small island state, we have a small tax base, and further, via media/TV and endorsement contracts, have a very limited capacity for revenue flow juxtaposed against the current schools in the PAC 12. As with any business relationship, there needs to be a reciprocal and value-added feature that connotes prudence by all parties involved–there is none at present–period.

I am a little perplexed, as I appreciate the aspiration, and certainly wish we were in that position to be courted to the PAC12, but Ben Jay presenst none of the critical analytics that would support the underpinnings for his position. Further, it is almost unethical to place this type of lofty summation out to the public without the due diligence of providing quantitative evidence on why we are a prime candidate. As always, just my lousy two cents…

  18. boolakanaka September 27, 2013 7:55 am

17, on the very conservative side, I would say we would have to be able to get a cash infusion of something near 250 million to make it even palatable by PAC12 current standards. Even then, we would be an outlier, and the most pressing question, would not be athletics but how to utilize and leverage this money for the inherent purpose of any higher education institution–academics.

    Boola,

I read where UH was ranked around 122 just a couple weeks ago.

Looking into the future the Pac-12 is going to expand to 16 teams like the rest of the power conferences and the rest will be independant. UH will not survive as an independent and that is why BJ is throwing this out there now. The odds are certainly against it but what is the harm in trying?

  26. boolakanaka September 27, 2013 8:52 am

24 Hmmn, the harm in trying….not sure. While the numbers speak for themselves, these are also are a predicate for the PAC12 to even consider UH. My point, is not to be negative, but rather to be transparent, i.e. what assumptions and numbers is Ban Jay operating from? How do those inflection points compare to other relative institutions, and why would we be a favorable option as to others? I think those are all fair and balanced questions for a senior administrator to answer at a public university. Otherwise, this is just an exercise of aspiration without the necessary construct of practicality.

  27. boolakanaka September 27, 2013 8:53 am

Good points Boo but what of the Asia and specifically China connections that seem to be growing and gaining some ground now that travel and other regulations are being loosened by both governments. Because as a singular market in the U.S. yes we are small but as a potential gateway to the lucrative Asian countries we certainly are in better position to make a difference compared to other U.S. universities. In our community alone the Asian tourists from China and Japan have been a boon in the past couple of years to small businesses who would normally struggle to survive.

  41. markazulu September 27, 2013 9:35 am

Read the article from yesterdays paper. Fresno State i think should be the 1 game we go all out for every year i would say their our biggest rivalry i know people say BYU, but i think it has to go to Fresno. The Fresno rivalry has been way more competitive and i think we should treat it with the respect of all these college rivals with a trophy.

  42. markazulu September 27, 2013 9:39 am

You would figure we have a nationally ranked team who also happens to be our biggest rival in fresno state coming in i hope we see a good crowd.

I know people have also stated on multiple occasion that Billy ray is in the doghouse because he was a “mcmackin” recruit and also david graves was also treated in such a way, but if thats the case wouldn’t Scott harding, Art Laurel, Chris Gant all be in the “dog house” to and i would even say Mike edwards wouldnt have been so highly talked about from Chow and company in 2012. I think Chow just wants to get the young freshman WR alot of game time reps to prepare them because he sees them as a asset to our future.

  46. boolakanaka September 27, 2013 9:50 am

37–Its a good point, and maybe his only real point or strategy. That said, I have not seen any market analysis that would suggest that football, and specifically UH football, has anchored sufficient amount of interest in Asian markets, that would make it a legitimate source of revenue. Playing devil’s advocate for a minute, one need only go to the USC , UCLA or Cal campuses and see they have far more students from Asia, than UH. Now, if we can accept that as fact, then it would be a fairly safe assumption that if football were to gain a TV market in Asia that they would be more apt to watch those schools than UH–I don’t know?

This I do know: is that those schools have far better branding, and as well, a much greater and established academic pedigree. Finally, if Asia were such a legitimate potential source of revenue, I think, we would have seen the NBA or an affiliate gain market share (basketball is far more popular in Asia than football)–we have not, and as such, I remain skeptical about the strategy until I see the comprehensive marketing plan and attendant financials.

  47. primo123 September 27, 2013 9:54 am

Two of last week’s “interceptions” came from deflections and caught by the lineman.

    How common is that??

At least it wasn’t the QB throwing into coverage or the receiver running the wrong route.

Another interception came whent the QB was hit and the ball went short. btw…the receiver was WIDE open had the ball had gottent there.

    Just saying….

  48. UH_Fan_In_SD September 27, 2013 9:55 am

What are you odds for which QB starts tomorrow? I’d say

    Graham – 20%

    Woosely – 30%

    Schroeder – 40%

    Higgins – 4%

Any other player on the roster – 6%

    ?

  49. boolakanaka September 27, 2013 9:56 am

41–Please, when you present facts, they are just that–facts. I never present platitudes, opinions, and/or hearsay. If you doubt me, please review any and all of my posts, and fact check anything I have said–and there is one common feature–veracity. If we cannot deal with the truths and axioms of a situation, we are never in the position to truly correct or fix said situations. Now, that said, you are certainly entitled to your opinion, but one should never be reflexive or intimidated with the truth, as truths always lead to answers.

  53. boolakanaka September 27, 2013 10:13 am

52–Mahalo…but the thing about that ranking, is that curiously, say for the 100-150 band of ranking, which one would assume, has 50 schools, it does not, it has more than 50 schools….so, it has me puzzled.

  54. cocobean September 27, 2013 10:16 am

boola. The subject of UH getting into the PAC12 pops up every year. The conventional wisdom has always been unless we can bring the Asian TV market to the table we had no chance of getting in.

Ben Jay is not from here. He doesn’t have the preconcieved notion that many, including me, have that PAC12 membership is anything more than a pipe dream. It’s like we’re bringing a 1lb bag of Taro Brand poi to their big time luau. Why should they invite us if that’s all we’re bringing.

However….I applaud BJ for putting it out there that he wants in. Says he has a plan. We should do what ever we can in our own small way to help him. Some may see him as someone venturing out on a Quixotic quest I hope others see him aqs someone who was inspired by an old RFK quote…”some see things as they are and ask why. I see things that never were and say why not…”

  59. boolakanaka September 27, 2013 10:25 am

56–CCbean, my point is not one of being able to shoot for a dream–we should. Rather, it is, that as BJ is a public official, I would like to see the details of the plan, and why we should be hopeful and supportive. I think when you lay out your plans, and can debate and articulate why it has features and mechanisms for success, you can also develop broader support, e.g. transparency.

  60. Former UH Athlete September 27, 2013 10:27 am

Thanks ST for the story. UH has some very good individuals on this team on and off the field.

  61. WarriorMojo September 27, 2013 10:28 am

    Re #50

So what? It MAY never happen for all the reasons you say, but let’s put the issue and discuss it. If it is never discussed, it WILL never happen.

Or would you prefer Jay just kill the issue and say — like you, apparently — that the PAC12 will never be interested? Is that the foresight and leadership you want from our AD?

  62. WarriorMojo September 27, 2013 10:32 am

    #60

So what, he’s supposed to say we can make our financial goal if we sell 2.7 billion huli huli chicken tickets or 1.35 Zippys chili tixs?

Obviously, this is an issue that will require a State governmental commitment of the highest order. Ben Jay and UH athletics cannot accomplish this without massive help.

Do we have a Gov. Burns or a Stan Sheriff waiting in the wings for his/her moment to shine? We won’t know until the issue gets out there, will we?

  63. boolakanaka September 27, 2013 10:32 am

60–Never talked down…we are who we are, there is no shame or talking down on that point. If you don’t have a reference point in which to start, you never make sustainable progress forward. It’s like seeing a family practice physician in Waipahu, if you say, ” oh, he doesn’t have a x-ray machine” that does not mean he is not a solid and competent doctor–it just states this is an area that he does not have–period. I am product of the system, specifically as a student and an athlete, so I think I bring a fairly nuanced vantage on its strengths and weaknesses–but merely mentioning a deficit area does not mean an F on the report card, it just says we need to place better and more efficient resources and efforts to correct deficiencies–that is all.

  64. WarriorMojo September 27, 2013 10:33 am

Anyway, best wishes to Mr. Jenner today. He was starting to rise quickly on my list of favorite players.

  65. Ipu Man September 27, 2013 10:37 am

    Everyone, have a happy day.

    Be nice to someone.

    Especially the players.

  66. Former UH Athlete September 27, 2013 10:38 am

46… All coaches play the players that give the team the best shot at winning. In the case BRS, he’s coming off an injury, so can’t blame Chow for not wanting to rush him back too soon. Maybe he’s still not healthy enough to be better than the Kirkwood or Kemp. Maybe its issues with coaching staff regarding the circumstances of why/how he was involved in a car accident. BRS was looked upon as the leader and if he did something stupid, it usually doesn’t sit well with coaches.

The truth will probably never get out. What’s said in the locker room (coaches office) stays in the locker room, and that’s how it should be. Coaches coach, players play.

  67. boolakanaka September 27, 2013 10:39 am

And for final clarification, I am not shooting down his plan–I am neither the AD or the President of UH, what I would like to see, is a strategic plan that addresses some of my questions. If you had a contractor, and he said he was going to build an infinity pool on the roof of your house, would you not ask how do you plan to successfully carry that out? Would you not ask, what about leakage, structurally how do you do that, have you done it before or who has, and how much? That is all I am posing to the AD…..

  68. d1shima September 27, 2013 10:48 am

In my mind (dangerous territory), the “Asian market” views (808) as a great vacation spot and schools on the mainland as an opportunity to advance in a profession to do well enough to afford a great vacation spot. They are leap-frogging HI when it comes to directing funds in favor of long-established think tanks and research institutes.

Additionally, the economics of the State are geared towards perpetuating that and to shift gears would be deemed extremely risky.

(there was a rocket scientist who used to post here that had some very relevant statistics about this….tsigh)

  71. Former UH Athlete September 27, 2013 11:08 am

The tricky part for Kaumeyer is going to be how he substitutes the DLine. Fresno runs the fast tempo and if they don’t sub, the defense can get stuck with a fatiguing defense if it’s a long drive.

If the Fresno subs, then no big deal as the officials have to let the defense get their subs in.

I saw Boise St trying to sneak DLinemen on/off the field as soon as the previous play is blown dead. It’s a small thing but the subs need to be ready to hustle on the field and the tired guys need to hustle off as soon as the whistle is blown.

If the defense is too slow to sub, they can get caught for a cheap 5 yard illegal sub penalty (12 man on field). Can’t give opponents free yards.

  72. haka September 27, 2013 11:14 am

Not sure if the AD needs to show “the people” his strategic game plan right now in the context of transparency, but this is part of what was said in the article this morning:

“Athletic director Ben Jay told the Board of Regents Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics on Thursday that he will lay out his “Game Plan” to elevate the department’s future at today’s invitation-only downtown luncheon.

In materials presented to the board, Jay said, “This community is going to be called to action like never before. We will rely upon our community — all who call themselves avid supporters of Hawaii athletics — to decide with their financial resources the quality and level of competitive success they want from this athletic program.”

Scouring the betting sites for tomorrow’s game… seems like they are pretty evenly split on their picks.

    Notes…

Fresno backers siting Graham’s status, and that UH hasn’t been able to score and inability to sustain drives.

Hawaii backers siting Fresno’s poor defense and possible flat spot after a high emotional win vs Boise. Defense has kept UH competitive and is better than stats suggest.

The spread still has not moved… still 18.5 with a good 78% of tickets punched for Fresno. Also interesting to note 77% of tickets are taking the under 58.5.

POMAI – lets make it official.

    Fresno 38

    Hawaii 27

I’ll be waiting to the last minute to place bet for UH to see if the line moves up at all. I will also take the over 58.5. Season tally now at 9-6 now that St Louis laid an egg.

I’m feeling that the contrarian bet is unscientifically the right move on this one.

    Hawaii QB situation….

    # 15, We all appreciate your profoundly antithetical and creative analysis of our highly esteem AD’s determination to work towards membership to the Pac-12. Yes, what you state is recognizably true but every goal, lofty as it may seem, needs to start somewhere. Personally, I applaud Ben for having the conviction and courage to “go where no man has gone before” we should all wish him well…just myy lousy two cents…

  82. Andrew September 27, 2013 11:52 am

    78.

The Fresno play by play announcer in the interview with Bobby Curran said that they have given up a few big special teams plays against opponents this season. Hopefully UH can capitalize on that.

  83. Ed September 27, 2013 12:02 pm

    # 79 go to mountain west conference website, they will be streaming the game..as long as you are not in Hawaii..go warriors

  84. turfwar September 27, 2013 12:08 pm

With UCLA at around 5000, USC 3000 and Cal Berkely 6000 students admitted each year the money in the Asian market does not come from enrollment as international students are capped at a certain percentage anyway. The purpose of any university is to take care of as many in-state students first. The money like in pro sports comes from the marketing of goods. A lot more people for example purchase 49’ers logo wear than go to 49’er games. When the Marlins won the World Series they immediately set out to rid the team of the highest paid players. Winning made the sale of Marlin logo wear go thru the roof and now the owners wanted to capitalize. So I would say branding as a University and a location is far more important than enrollment numbers. This is an area we have much room for growth and thus the potential for increased income. With an asian head coach and AD it wouldn’t surprise if these things didn’t come into play during the hiring process. ST once brought up an interesting reason for expanding the conference. Inventory. The real money today comes from TV contracts. The Pac12 Network has what 4 channels? The bigger the inventory the more diverse the programming. In the darker days of winter I’m sure Hawaii offers a counter programming option to catch viewers not to mention the last live game of the day and if that game were to involve another Pac16 team even better. Worked in television for 30 years and I can tell you at some point television execs will have a vote in saying whether Hawaii holds a value or not. There’s a reason Hawaii 5-0 is getting paid millions per episode from the cable networks.

there is a big lack of production from the kick return team (14-246, 17.5 avg), yet we haven’t seen allen sampson, tony grimes, samson anguay, willis wilson, george ornellas, or robert kekaula return any kicks.

    why?

17 yards is pathetic, they are better off letting the ball go into the end zone.

obviously not smart enough to let the ball go out of bounds.

alabama’s defense will show up saturday at aloha, and they will be wearing red and white.

  86. cocobean September 27, 2013 12:11 pm

boola. I get your drift. Kinda like show me the money.

My main point which was not clearly stated is Ben Jay is not “local.” Conventional “local wisdom” has been the PAC12 does not see UH as being worthy of membership. I’ve believed this to be a truism and would chuckle everytime someone would post we should try to join the PAC12.

No “local” official has ever said he/she will formulate a plan to actively persue membership. Ben Jay is the first public official to come out and say this. The irony is he’s not “local” and not bound by conventional “local wisdom.”

  87. madeinhawaii September 27, 2013 12:12 pm

heheheh d1, I was reminded of him also when I was reading boolakanaka’s phrasing and reasoning this morning.

Garret (two “r”s) used to sometimes take some heat for his analysis of UH and conferences, but of course, having put the Mars Lander on Mars, kinda, he got a little more slack around here… 🙂 😛

    Ok

  94. papajoe2 September 27, 2013 12:46 pm

UH can be competitive in other sports, besides football, in the Pac12 especially the Wahine. How is Colorado and Utah doing in the other sports? Washington State? OSU? I really don’t know, but I do know that the SoccerBows won 2 away games against OU and OSU and SoftBows and VolleyBows, well what can we say? Too bad it’s not the big money maker sports like football and men’s basketball.

  95. markazulu September 27, 2013 12:47 pm

@91 Matty boy I read that he will be the starter and split time with lakalaka and marcus langkillde

  96. markazulu September 27, 2013 12:52 pm

Wily is gonna be out because of concussion like symptoms. I’d be interested in seeing wilson get a look. St Juste was out of nevada in the 2nd half because of tightness in his hamstring but he said he will be good to go

  97. Hilo-Warrior September 27, 2013 12:53 pm

ya I really dont see why St. Juste wont play. I really like the thunder and lightning punch with St. Juste and Lakalaka.

Hopefully we can get Graham as the starter. Boy needs to learn how to slide though.

  98. Old School Dave September 27, 2013 12:56 pm

Is June Jones a candidate to replace Mack Brown at Texas?

  99. markazulu September 27, 2013 12:58 pm

I honestly think it wouldnt hurt to red shirt wily if its available.

  100. markazulu September 27, 2013 1:01 pm

The thought of June Jones Run n shoot with Texas type recruits is scary as heck lol

  101. Old School Dave September 27, 2013 1:05 pm

On the other hand, there seems to be some rumblings and grumblings from SMU fans about the direction JJ is taking the football program. One of the complaints is that of poor recruiting or lack of effort put into it, and the reliance of transfers from schools like Texas.

  102. Hilo-Warrior September 27, 2013 1:11 pm

but even here at UH he was heavy on transfers. And a lot of it I think had to do with they were in better college football shape to play right away instead of waiting for them to develop.

  103. (Jesse)James September 27, 2013 1:23 pm

  104. boolakanaka September 27, 2013 1:23 pm

87–Coco-I’m feeling you. The point of this line of discourse is to remind folks that as either alumni or citizens of the state we are in line with our responsibilities to ask, at times, pointed questions of our leaders and executives. And excuse me if that has come-off as being an antagonist of our beloved university-that was not the intention. Seeking answers as to the direction and strategy of our future does not make one a malcontent, in fact, in some ways it can be the greatest sign of Aloha to the institution.

One need only look at the KSBE and the seminal events that occurred through the mid and late nineties as a case study of what occurs when there is a dearth of accountability and a culture of autocratic management. People either through historical practice, or institutional blockage, refrained from asking tough questions of the estate and its management practices–and the trust suffered dearly. Let me give you an example of how much it suffered, in the early nineties, KBSE had an endowment worth more than the combined assets of both Harvard and Yale. Fast forward 20 plus years, and Harvard is at 34 billion, Yale at 24 billion and KBSE at roughly 12-14 billion, although they hold a third of the portfolio in real estate, and it is undervalued.

My point being in all this is that if you really have affection for the entity you challenge it, and you ask tough questions. I can assure these very same questions, are being asked in a much blunt fashion behind closed doors. A professor once told me, its not so much the right answers we seek, but rather positing the right questions…..

  105. mauiwarrior September 27, 2013 1:24 pm

JJ is not getting interest from Texas, they going for one of the Big Time Younger Guys……

  107. Andrew September 27, 2013 1:24 pm

I wonder if Jim Tressel would ever give coaching another try. Texas might wanna try giving him a call if it doesn’t work out with Brown. Although not sure if Tressel’s age would come into factor.

  112. (Jesse)James September 27, 2013 1:40 pm

    #15…Boola….

I haven’t read the article just yet so really can’t comment on that…

However, it is my understanding that there have been talks by the big players such as the Pac 12, SEC, Big 10, Big 12…and so on to form what are being tossed around as “super conferences” of 20 or so teams each. This would basically form another division of football. The remainder of the current 120 DI teams would be pretty much left out and forced to go independent or do something else. The talk has been that this will happen over the next 5-6 years and therefore, positioning has to be done now if we want to continue to grow…..but that’s just stuff that I’ve heard….nothing in writing. 🙂

  113. PolyMom September 27, 2013 1:58 pm

Actually there is a big problem here in California. First USC is a private school. It’s not a public university.

Now regarding the UC Systems…the only way to keep them running was they now have 50 percent out of state or foreign students. The only way they can keep the doors open. The general public here in California was outraged! But I get it. The tenure, teachers unions and overall up keep of these schools has created this huge problem. Jerry Brown had to make the tough decision and did. So 50 percent of all students at UC schools are out of state or foreign.

Now if someone could get Larry Ellinson to kick in 100K for the football program and we can get the NCAA to make a few concessions for the mainland kids…we could compete and be a part of the PAC 12. One can dream.

  114. PolyMom September 27, 2013 2:11 pm

    Sorry I meant 100M

Gotta get your foot in the door first.

Get Ellison to help the UH Sailing team.

  118. boolakanaka September 27, 2013 2:34 pm

120–that Haka is a remarkably smart idea! Hit a man at his passion–I am actually surprised that the have not started that conversation already….

It is along those same reasons why I think the Asia marker is a possible stretch. After identifying an affinity with a sport, the next thing people love is to watch is “their own people.” It is just like how we love to see local boys play–same thing. But, when you look at the sports Asians, and this is speaking in generalizations, that are most apt for….football does not come to mind. Volleyball, tennis, golf, even track n field, but as to the big revenue producing sports, not so much…..

I think these ideas and cultivation of players could definitely be an action item, but we don’t have decades, and so, at best, its a long term proposition.

  119. jimmy the lock September 27, 2013 2:44 pm

PolyMom, what NCAA concessions for the mainland kids? Little confused here.

Oh, yeah, equip the UH sailing team with state of the art hydroplaning catamarans and they’ll kick butt! 😎

#15 As always you made some good points. We are in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and if the UH and the State sat down and really put forth a solid vision and marketing plan targeting the Far East than the possibilities as a viable candidate to be part of the Pac 12 conference may not be as far fetched as one may think. Are there any marketing groups based in Asia that would be willing to think out of the box and find a way to promote the University of Hawaii Athletics? The Pac 12 is already looking at this market and it would be a shame if we were not the leader in garnering this potential market for scholars and athletes and making the University of Hawaii athletic culture part of theirs. My 2 cents added to #15.

Early thoughts in San Jose Vs Utah St….

No speed on either defense. Keeton is a good player but his OLine is shaky. Fales looks like he’s regressed a little under the new coaching staff.

Zebras conferences over nothing important is slowing the game…

  130. NotNasti September 27, 2013 3:40 pm

I think the discussion with Ellison has already occurred. ST has reported on this blog that Ben Jay has had discussions with Ellison’s people. He didn’t elaborate as to exactly what was discussed. Ben Jay is one smart, shrewd Pa-ke, a bean counter, and I applaud him for his efforts. He may not succeed at achieving all of his goals here, but he is not going down without a fight. Warrior style!

    Man, SJSU’s Dline is slow.

And a terrible Keeton pass gets bailed out with P.I. As the ball was about 5 yards behind WR… Not much the DB could do as the WR was forced stop and DB ran into him.

Nice play design on the Utah St touchdown.

Referees are the best looking unit on the field so far…. 8 penalties for 86 yards through 9 minutes.

Oh, just found out, boola boola Univ. is sending me back home to recruit native kids, so I’ll be out the week of Oct 28th, and plan to attend the Army Game….so, lets hang!

  142. madeinhawaii September 27, 2013 4:04 pm

    PolyMom,

Das what I say… let’s consult the Oracle (Elison)… and if that leads to no where, we can try to make a Case with AOL ties.

  143. Independent Thinker September 27, 2013 4:05 pm

At boola at 106. Well said.

  144. Former UH Athlete September 27, 2013 4:08 pm

    10 penalties officially (1 declined).

SJSU’s DLine stinks. They’ve been getting decent pressure but are nowhere near athletic enough to corral Keeton.

The David Fales regression continues. Weak throw and stared down WR, easy pick by the USU safety.

  145. cocobean September 27, 2013 4:09 pm

    143. You work for Light and Truth U? Thought they were like USC, they don’t recruit they evaluate.

  146. PolyMom September 27, 2013 4:10 pm

I’d like to see the NCAA allow folks like myself to donate miles so the parent or parents of a kid from far away can see them in a game. And see the school. They can’t drive to Hawaii. I sat at the banquet a couple of years ago with some of these boys who’s Mom’s have never seen them play. It brought tears to my eyes. Florida, Texas, Georgia…that’s far! We need players from there.

I would also like the mainland boys to be able like in the old days be connected to a local family. They need a connection…someone there for them. Since the 80’s we are still very close to some of the families from the players. They are our second families. We are still close today. These families ate our kids hanai grandparents. Serious.

Blah blah talk is cheap about Ellinson. We got Case, Odemeyer so many super rich fols there. They make their money, and I hardly see anything from them. But they need to change the law and let buildings Abd facilities be named after folks who are living. I understand that’s a problem. But Larry Ellinson…you like make Lanai the playground for the rich…then belley up with the check book. Want permits? And Lanai will be for the very rich only. From what my hub read, a small ocean front lot could go for 10+ million. Heck I bet I give more then Steve Case gives to the football team!

  147. madeinhawaii September 27, 2013 4:15 pm

Oprah don’t need a new stadium?

  148. PolyMom September 27, 2013 4:18 pm

My hub said the Lanai lots and model is going to be like our mall town, Hermosa Beach. Strand lots are around 5000 square feet. Price of those Strand lots will be from 7-10M. How many locals can afford that? I mean really? With walk street lots around 3-5M. That’s only for the uber rich.

Larry is going to control Lanai, Go Airlines, Aloha Island Air Cargo. Bet he buys that airline too.

Larry bust out your check book!!!!!

  149. Former UH Athlete September 27, 2013 4:18 pm

    134. I think so… UH needs as much speed on defense they can get. Fresno doesn’t run much plus they aren’t that good at it.

Wow… 3rd offensive P.I. on #19 (SJSU) on the pick play. Maybe the coach should stop calling that play. Penalty declined but that’s now 13 flags thrown (11 official penalties)

LoL… Make that 14 flags (12 official) with kick catch interference.

This is going to be a blowout if SJSU doesn’t stop making stupid mistakes.

  150. PolyMom September 27, 2013 4:19 pm

    SHOW US THE MONEY! LOL!

  151. boolakanaka September 27, 2013 4:19 pm

147….Coco, never place boola boola univ. in the same sentence as USC, the blue bloods would die in their penny loafers. Yes, boola is at boola boola u., and we are earnest in our efforts to get more kanka maoli among our ranks….even going Moloka’i for a visit.

  152. Former UH Athlete September 27, 2013 4:24 pm

Keeton could be a really good QB if be more patient in the pocket. If his 1st option isn’t there, his first instinct is to tuck and run. He’s got time to throw but looks to scramble before the pressure gets close. Could be still hearing footsteps from the USC game where he was running for his life all 2nd half.

Keeton could have a field day if he just goes through his progressions. SJSU’s DL isn’t getting much pressure at all.

  153. Former UH Athlete September 27, 2013 4:25 pm

    15 flags (13 official penalties) and counting…

  154. boolakanaka September 27, 2013 4:25 pm

152..Polymom, its true, I was in a recent meeting with Steve Case, and his interest lie much more in the buff and blue, Williams or even boola-boola University, where he has an honorary degree. It would have to be an extraordinarily compelling situation for him to become a large donor–but who knows….

#156, yah Steve Case got the Case Middle School. But then they come asking for donations. I don’t think so! Hey if your name is on the building then pay up! I’m not paying for your building. At least Odemeyer paid for his building. No one asked me for money. I didn’t attend UH but I give lots of money. And we are providing internships for UH Hilo. Why? It’s my home. It’s where I come from. It’s to expand opportunities for Childten and students where I am from! I give Punahou some as I went there to, but giving to UH helps more students of the state.

Williams, big deal. You should read the sad letters of my hubs Uncle he wrote when he was a student there in the 1920’s. It was lonley and racist. Being a Jew there was no fun! No way my girl is applying there. Lets say this Asians, Jews Blacks no one was welcomed there.

  166. madeinhawaii September 27, 2013 4:56 pm

Maybe someone could really design and show Oprah a nice new stadium with her “O” as the primary shape. A truly multi-functional sports center with conference rooms and more that she could take advantage of for her many non-profit programs, too.

  167. madeinhawaii September 27, 2013 4:57 pm

Everytime we have a game and they show our stadium it would be a plug for “O”

  168. PolyMom September 27, 2013 4:57 pm

    #157

    And for me too!

Don’t know any other school that Cole Porter wrote songs for.

    BULLDOG BULLDOG bow wow wow

    Eli Yale.

Go Warriors! Praying for no injuries.

  169. tommui September 27, 2013 5:17 pm

    #156 – PolyMom:

I think Case and Omidyar made it a point to contribute perhaps 50%-75% of the cost of the building but felt that it was also the responsibility of the alumni to contribute $$ to the building fund. Otherwise you could say – let Steve or Pierre take care of it – and we will just sit on our hands.

While it would be nice if Steve or Larry or Ms Winfrey would contribute some $$, it should also be for us peons to contribute a few $ too!!

  170. Former UH Athlete September 27, 2013 5:18 pm

Who’d a thought the 2nd coming of Tim Tebow would play for BYU?

    T. Hill is the Cougars best RB. You would think Def coordinators would put one to two spies on him by now.

  171. Former UH Athlete September 27, 2013 5:20 pm

Too bad UH doesn’t have any billionaire alumni… Maybe they do, but none care about athletics.

  172. Former UH Athlete September 27, 2013 5:27 pm

Fales just stares down his targets…. JH-T and M. Jackson are going to be licking their chops when they see the SJSU film.

After watching SJSU, I think it might be winnable game. They have not been impressive at all…. Right in cue, SJSU just completely screwed up a scoring opportunity. Wow.

  173. Former UH Athlete September 27, 2013 5:31 pm

I was just going to say there hasn’t been a penalty for a while, but SJSU just got flagged for P.I. on 3rd down. Followed by intentional grounding on Keeton.

  174. Former UH Athlete September 27, 2013 5:32 pm

Oh man… The SJSU defender just KO’d his teammate on the tackle… Ouch.

  175. Former UH Athlete September 27, 2013 6:19 pm

Earlier correction, SJSU defender got KO’d by the RB, not his teammate. Bad tackling technique as he lowered his head way down and the RB managed to hit the back of his helmet even though the defender was facing him.

Looking at the athletes on the field, I think UH is going to be better than both of these teams in a couple years. UH has much better athletes on defense already. Once UH improves at OLine the next couple years, both SJSU and Utah St don’t have the speed to contain St Juste, Harris Ross or DJ Riggins in the future. UH will run all over both Utah St and SJSU in the future.

Once Keeton graduates, Utah St is going to drop. They don’t have playmakers other the him that I can see.

  176. Former UH Athlete September 27, 2013 6:31 pm

Holy cow Fales is inaccurate on the short throws when he tries to gun the ball in there. His throwing motion is a little unorthodox. He’s Got a twisting motion. What I mean by that is Fales tends to really rotate his hips and shoulders in attempt to add extra velocity. He’s not a big guy and his arm is just average. To add the extra power, he torques his body. But he often over rotates and the ball can launch offline. On the touch throws he’s more accurate as his shoulders and hips are square and the release is better.

  177. jeezy33 September 27, 2013 6:36 pm

177… Most good mid majors have a drop off after they graduate a All Conference caliber QB…. I expect Fresno and San Jose to have big drop offs next year unless they have a legit QB in waiting.

  178. madeinhawaii September 27, 2013 6:49 pm

If our Warriors don’t get too beaten up tomorrow.. I think they’ve got a good chance against SJSU.

  179. jeezy33 September 27, 2013 6:59 pm

    180. San Jose couldnt keep up with the legs of Keeton… Who then bought time to hit open WRs. I think Woolsey might be able to give trouble to a pretty slow San Jose D.

  180. PolyMom September 27, 2013 7:00 pm

Thanks Tom Mui. It’s my understanding from Kathleen the gal who came from the UH Foundation that Odemeyer paid fr the building. But Pnahou had to pay for and land other things associated ith the building. That was my understanding. Maybe I misunderstood. But the Case building OMG it was so many campaigns. At least twice a year for 7-8 years. I mean if Steve were more friendly to all of us, and I’m his classmate I might have given something. But OMG we hardly get a hello. My husband thinks that happens sometimes when folks make it really big. They get shy with the folks they knew. And maybe the demise of some of the greatest companies, CNN and many others might be embarrassing. Who knows? And we all know Dan was the brains to raise the funds for that IPO. Such a loss so young. I still remember Steve from many classes. He was nice and kind of shy.

I give my manini donation to the scholarship fund. I was a schollie kid, and at Punahou you all work for the

schollie. Even athletes. No free rides. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to attend such a wonderful school. I’ll do something that Punahou wants done in the future, we’ve been talking with them. It’s just pulling the trigger. You know what I mean?

  181. A-House September 27, 2013 7:18 pm

fresno offensive strategy for 3rd and long or for any yardage – send a WR over the middle – grans ball barrans gain yards

OSU did it all game and UH DC seemingly did nothing to stop it – especially in the 2nd half

Fresno DC got no problems as UH offensive will not score more than 10 points – totally ineffective

  182. jm2375 (iPad) September 27, 2013 7:22 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos!

We will be there with the pan Lau lau. I hear the mrs in the kitchen getting it ready to put it in the oven As for Garret he is just fine. He is the main man for his company and it is making him keep long hours with his work. As his dad, I kind of knows that his feeling was hurt on the blog which made him back off from the blog.

  192. gobows September 27, 2013 9:40 pm

    #183 not going to happen

look for the tight end to make big plays on 3rd and long, and big plays from passes to the running backs.

  193. momo September 27, 2013 9:41 pm

The school record 16 points scored and the ncaa is 22

Fresno St. has a redshirt freshman in the wings for the next 4 years, by the name of Zack Greenlee. He’s one of the top QBs from the Elite 11 camp. Saw today’s game and Keeton is a lot more productive than Fales. San Jose St. has a lot of serious injuries. They don’t have much of a running attack.

  203. madeinhawaii September 28, 2013 12:38 am

Poly Mom— As a side note, Cole Porter did in fact write for one other university: Indiana University. He was born in Indiana, and awfully proud of his home state, although the songs he composed for IU were not the alma mater. And one other interesting fact about ole Cole, so bright was this fellow, that upon graduation from boola boola college, he we enrolled jointly at Harvard Law School and then the Harvard School of Music..So, with that introduction, I take the liberty of playing this for our most gracious host, the incomparable, Mr. Tsai—we get a kick out of you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hYJOgCav9M

    Good morning Tsaikos.

I am a believer. We have continued to show signs of improvement as each week has come and gone. I feel that we will get better again and pull out another 2008 upset.

    I BELIEVE.

    UH 31

    FSU 27

  232. Former UH Athlete September 28, 2013 5:29 am

Another monster game from Harris Ross? I don’t know how UH will keep his commitment. He been tearing it up so much this season that the less than ethical recruiters will be all over him all the way until signing day. The red carpet and $500 handshakes will be coming for him.

Hope he stays true to UH. Chow is building quite a stable of horses.

Wonder who he’s the start tonight? If TG didn’t practice, and if SS starts, I’m sure he’ll have a very short leash. In other words get ready for some Woosley at some point.

  233. 99club September 28, 2013 6:02 am

    234 – Former UH Athlete

You are certainly a braver man than I if you wager on tonight’s game. 🙂 Too many unknowns. Florida and Arizona St. as faves for me.

  239. boolakanaka September 28, 2013 7:11 am

171 _Tommui–You are indeed correct, once again. For many high net donors, the intent is not paying the entire bldg or initiative, (which they could easily do) rather it to leverage both institutional and alumni support to match their dollars. For instance Phil Knight, just pledged 500 million (yes, thats correct a half billion) to the Oregon Health Science Center, OHSU, for a world class cancer center, predicated on OHSU raising the same amount in the next 3 years. It’s actually a fairly savvy strategy, as it places the responsibility on the institution to also put in its own work, while usually doubling the original amount.

The other paradigm that is used, and well, lets just call it, less evolved, is the one deployed by Boone Pickens. Through a series of planned giving of either money, stock, and land holdings he has given OK State almost 250 million, much of it dedicated to the athletic department. But, upon closer inspection of the deal, while no doubt very generous, it has several key features that exclusively benefit the billionaire. So, aside from the tax and estate planning considerations, (which are profound) he made a stipulation that these assets be managed not by the university, but rather, his own investment of arm on Picken Holdings. Thus, at once, he realizes very advantageous tax positions, (now and into the future) and further, makes both a management fee, and a profit, if the money he donated but manages, is in the black every year……now, that’s playing every angle.

  240. Shoko September 28, 2013 7:33 am
