Open for business

When he was UH’s offensive coordinator in 2011, Nick Rolovich bought a neon “Open” sign that he kept lit on his office sill.

The light will be relit in Manoa today.

After spending a few days celebrating the holidays with his wife and four kids on the mainland, Nick Rolovich is set to return to Hawaii today.

Rolovich is expected to finalize his hirings in the next couple days, as well as set up the recruiting visits for the last three weekends in January.

In addition to filling three coaching vacancies, including defensive coordinator, there also is an opening at graduate assistant this spring. The Warriors also need to find a replacement for Jeron Gouveia, who left as defensive intern to pursue a coaching position on the mainland.

    I’m tired.
I spent the past 3 hours yelling at the TV.

  2. H-Man December 27, 2015 11:48 am

I like the progress that Rolo is making. Everything seems under control.

  3. DoubleB December 27, 2015 11:49 am

Excited to see whom Rolo’s last few hires are. Very important recruiting cycle coming up… Let’s go Warriors, Defend Pride Rock!!

  4. PeteJek December 27, 2015 11:50 am

Good win for the Jets. Bad call to kick in OT by the Patriots – deliberate or not. See you in the playoffs, if you get there.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

#WarriorBall unofficially starts the new season on Thursday with a scrimmage on Maui. Games at the SSC start NEXT Monday with a exhibition game against Team SportConX and gets going for real NEXT Thursday!
SEE YOU ALL AT THE SSC!
(ST – will we see any MVB stories before you go on hiatus?)

    GO WARRIORS!
    GO WAHINE!

    #1 ST,

Your yelling willed your Jets to victory. Worth it.

  8. Pomai December 27, 2015 12:04 pm

Rolo needs to find a spot for Brian Kajiyama to re-join the team……

  9. el burro sabio. December 27, 2015 12:54 pm

Pomai, I think Brian is serving a much more noble cause

  10. Maddog50 December 27, 2015 1:03 pm

Stephen as I tell my friend who has at least 8 stints and fresh from quadruple bypass……..calm down! He is younger than you but it the Irish genes—

  11. C-Pop December 27, 2015 1:56 pm

ST – Great win for Jets! I really like what’s going on with new regime, head coach Todd Bowles has been a favorite DC from Arzona stint, epitome of cool, calm, collected demeanor. Not high or to low type, low key competent and Competetive M O. His team has adapted to his personality like successful programs do. I’m pulling for the Jets, stout defensive front, talent on all levels & Revis Isle. Fitzmagic plus WRs & RBs primed for playoffs all they need to do is beat Rex Ryan & his Bills next week. Go Jets !!

Did Nate Herbig decommit from Stanford or did he get his scholarship offer pulled?

  13. Kaimiloa December 27, 2015 2:51 pm

    11. Not sure about Herbig’s Stanford offer, but he just picked one up from Vanderbilt, so academics shouldn’t be the issue.

  14. Dano December 27, 2015 4:42 pm

    it wasn’t Iosefa’s fault….

  15. A-House December 27, 2015 7:13 pm

it’s nice to “play” with the big boys, but reality check when the schools tells you there is some one bigger, stronger, faster, quicker than you and scholarship will be or was offered to someone else.

guess Power5 schools have that luxury for all sports

  16. A-House December 27, 2015 7:21 pm

my only hope for the 49ers is to lose the last game to improve on the draft status — believe they are sitting at #3 or #4

problem is they need so many skilled players where do they start? my choice would be QB — especially if they will dump Kapenick — trade bait until 3/30/2016.

problem is with the 2016 draft few, if any, can start immediately – no different for incoming college freshman or JC transfers – and I have no idea who they drafted the past 3 years who can step up in 2016.

my hope is that their Australia soccer player can improve greatly while on the practice squad for next year — a 6′ 3″ 225# RB with legit 4.5 speed can wreak havoc with the right coaching.

guess Vandy is warmer than Northwestern — academic schools

  18. SteveM December 27, 2015 7:53 pm

A-House — are you planning to attend the UH-CA game in Sydney? If so, Panda travel? First or second tour?

49ers are like the Rainbow Warriors. Both need an efficient QB to lead the team and both need to shore up their defense. I don’t see a sure fire franchise QB in the 2016 draft, so if I was our 49er GM I would look for a middle LB or top end DE like Deforest Buckner in the 1st round. For QB I think the Niners can get a Dak Prescott or Trevone Boykin in the 3rd round or in the 4th round. Remember, Montana was drafted in the 3rd round. Prescott and Boykin reminds me of Russell Wilson, also a 3rd round pick. They both make a lot of plays. Warriors need Defenive lineman and an electric return man.

    89.

I know somebody with similar health problems whose doctor told him to stop watching news coverage of George W. Bush, or he’d die.

  22. Sangamon Keith December 28, 2015 4:13 am

Aaron Zwahlen will be next UH quarterback. Recruited by all the “air storm” schools including Washington State and Texas Tech, he was rated in the ESPN 300 at #155. So among the top prospects in the country in 2013. He redshirted last season after two-year mission and should be ready to go for Rolo and Hill this spring. Not sure why, but UH fans seem to forget this guy despite being rated higher than Kennedy T (#187) in ESPN 300. We have a potential gem and no one seems to know.

  23. Maddog50 December 28, 2015 4:14 am

Posted today on Scoop-Kevin Lempa is leading candidate for DC coordinator position. Nothing else posted regarding other positions-after a very docile December we are hunkering down for an ice storm in Chicago-lights have flickered several times so we will see what happens-supposed to get 60 mph winds this afternoon we will see-Go Navy! Go Warriors!!!!!!!

  24. Maddog50 December 28, 2015 4:21 am

Sangamon Keith, we don’t know what we don’t know. Zwahlen was kept under wraps sort of so not surprised about the doubt-Coach Rolovich will surely assess the situation accurately. I am much more concerned with the other side of the ball and some OT’s even though we have 3 or 4 who redshirted. As I have watched all or parts of all the bowl games due to broadcast time one thing stands out. The other guy plays a lot of true freshman……ours sit on the sideline. As I told numerous business associates thru the years take care of today and get it done today because in business many times there are no tomorrow’s for those that don’t-looking forward to seeing this kid make a big impact-Go Warriors!!!!

  25. cappie the dog December 28, 2015 4:36 am

    Greg Salas: one tackle.

  26. H-Man December 28, 2015 6:07 am

Not to be disrespectful, but Kevin Lempa. at 63, is at the end of his coaching career. Besides, he was at Boston College from 1981-90, 2003-06 and has been back at BC since 2013. Lots of friends there. Most of his coaching career has been in the East. He only came to Hawaii from the San Diego Chargers with June Jones. Besides, I don’t think Hawaii can afford to pay him a decent salary. But then again, maybe the Mrs. is campaigning for warm weather and time at the beach.

  27. papayalips December 28, 2015 6:31 am

Welcome coach Lempa! First thing Rolo needs to do is show Lempa how to use Twitter https://twitter.com/coachlemps

  28. mctruck December 28, 2015 7:16 am

Hitman, ur #18; enjoyed checking it out. That’s some powerful list of, D’s/O’s.

  29. Paniolo December 28, 2015 7:50 am

There is a whole lot of 2015 Warriors returning for 2016 which is a plus for Coach Rolovich new Staff. All Warrior fans hope he names a good Defensive Coordinator.
If Coach Rolo is reading this, hey coach please consider finding a position for Colt Brennan…Besides you, as you know Colt Brennan was a fan favorite and just having him on your staff will lit the fire at the ticket box office.
Lastly, Coach, PLEASE keep the name “Warrior only” for our football team….

  30. Maddog50 December 28, 2015 8:03 am

We’ll wait for announcement but if anybody thinks 63 is an issue for any coach there are tons of coaches with an awful lot of experience in pros and college 58 and up. It really to me is not a factor and adds balance to a “youthful” staff. No problem for me at all-I trust Coach Rolovichs approach-Go Warriors!!!

  31. Shoko December 28, 2015 8:26 am

I think BC is looking for another defensive coordinator since Brown was hired by Michigan. So, don’t know whether Lempa is in the running for his replacement.

  32. al December 28, 2015 8:40 am

The recommendations have been submitted. The list is awaiting the Upper Manoa clearing house. Could be as early as this afternoon.

    Stay tuned.

  33. Na Alii Pride December 28, 2015 9:24 am

Kevin Lempa is 63? Wow. Like #29@maddog said, I think Rolo needs an “experienced” guy to balance out the youth on the staff. I think he’s a great addition (if he indeed is the guy). I liked his defense when he was here.
