Onward

The Warriors practiced for about 2 hours this morning, then departed for the airport for their trip to Utah State.

Offensive tackle Clayton Laurel and defensive tackle David Hafoka were added to the travel roster. Defensive tackle Geordon Hanohano (sore knee) and cornerback Steven Christian were deleted.

* * * * * *

The Warriors are leaving a day earlier than they did in 2008, when they lost to Utah State.

Conditioning will be a factor in this game. Not so much because of altitude, but because of the Aggies’ no-huddle offense. And quarterback Diondre Borel. The UH coaches liken him to a punt returner playing quarterback.

* * * * *

If I were a UH fan, I would be rooting for ESPN to pick up the UH-Boise State telecast. It would mean fans could watch the game for free. And if you’re a pay-per-view season subscriber, you will actually get a refund; in a round-about way, you’ll be paid to watch the game. Sure, UH will take a financial hit, but its budget concerns should not be our budget concerns. Not when you can get a free live telecast of  the most anticipated matchup on the Warriors’ schedule.

Avis has selected Hiflyer as the winner of the Rainbow Wahine commemorative 2010 World Series T-shirt.

Happy birthday to Kinda Shy.

Our defense has to make stops and not let Utah State get moving down the field when they do go to no-huddle play.

    Da Punchbowl Kid

    I know !

BUTTTTT I had to do my research & NONE of my 16 credits are going to be transferred from the college I’m in now.

    Manoa takes all of it.

  20. Stephen Tsai October 20, 2010 7:01 am

    Danielle:

It would easier on the budget to take requirements at KCC. There are a few things to consider, though. You need to make sure the credits earned there are transferable. Yes, I know it’s the same system, but you still have to check. If I’m not mistaken, I think that while credits may transfer, the GPA might not. For instance, if you aced four classes at KCC, after transferring to UH, you would receive credit for four classes but not for a 4.0 GPA. That would start anew at UH. You might have to check whether your major requires a specific UH GPA.

  21. whitey October 20, 2010 7:02 am

ok, hear the calling of breakfast of champions, so see you all later.

  29. Garret October 20, 2010 7:10 am

    ST,

The UH-BSU game would be on ESPNU…not everybody gets that channel for free. Some people would have upgrade their subscription, and the people who didn’t switch to digital cable would be out of luck without a big upgrade in their TV subscription.

I think that one reason that PPV added so many non-football games is that they pro-rate the refund by the number of broadcasts. So, if they have 20 events scheduled, people would get 1/20 of their money back, even though they are mainly subscribing to PPV for football.

However, I *agree* with your point that people shouldn’t worry about the decreased PPV revenue. JD cut a deal a couple of years ago to guarantee $2.5 million of so of PPV money, and the reduced subscribers this year means that UH isn’t going to get more than that anyway. Oceanic will lose out on the money that they would have gotten from people buying only the BSU game for PPV, but Oceanic has plenty of money.

  30. Slugger October 20, 2010 7:11 am

    Goood morning!

    Congratulations to HiFlyer!

I’m conflicted…I’ll be out of town during the Boise game, so I really would like the game to remain on PPV so I can record it to view when I get back. If it’s on ESPN, I might be able to catch it while traveling, but then I might not.

K, better get in gear to go to practice… Esme & out…

  31. CoolEthan October 20, 2010 7:12 am

I envy those who get to root on the team on this Logan visit. Looks like a beautiful town backed up to the Wasatch mountain range. Some of the finest skiing in the nation is right there.

Plus, Asia Carrera now lives in Logan. Don’t ask how I know that. :>

  32. Garret October 20, 2010 7:12 am

It is nice that JD is supporting the Warrior team by sending them out one day earlier to Utah. Extra hotel nights and extra per diem money will cost UH quite a bit, but UH needs football success to get in a good position for its future.

I still remember how the men’s volleyball team took the red-eye flight and had to play a conference match the day they arrived…classic example of how saving money hurts a team’s performance.

  33. Garret October 20, 2010 7:14 am

Dominic Sierra is apparently not a UH greyshirt anymore…he’s at Cerritos College.

Is UH advertising is homecoming game against Idaho yet? I haven’t seen or heard much about that, but I would have thought that UH could have sold a lot of tickets after the glow of the Nevada win.

  38. A-joe October 20, 2010 7:23 am

rage777 and Hank I too feel your frustration. I’ve been commenting about this ever since JJ was here. I’ve brought it up with JJ at luncheons. His response was that they were working on it but his mood suggested it wasn’t that of a priority. He had total confidence in the offense to comeback and erase any mistakes special teams or the defense made.

My thought was, special teams are employed at the most critical and most vulnerable moments of a game. Anything can happen. There’s just too many chances for things to go wrong. It’s like driving a car then suddenly telling an inexperienced passenger to hold the wheel while you climb in the backseat for a moment. Or suddenly handing the steering duties of a full blazing semi in bad weather over to a green driver for just a moment It may seem harmless or not that big of a deal but anything can happen.

To me, special teams should be treated as a weapon. It should be used to pin the opponent in a bad predicament, cause turnovers in our favor or full-blown all out score on every transition.

Every single day significant time should be invested into all aspects of special teams. Every player pulling SP duties should become experts and possess honed skills in the craft. We need to instill psychological doubt and fear in an opponent every time they’re forced to punt or kick the ball. When they’re worried about not screwing up, that’s when they’ll screw up. We need to be there making their misery happen for them.

  39. Shoko October 20, 2010 7:24 am

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE: UHs Academic Progress Rate (APR) score of 950 not only is among the WACs highest but it ranks among nations best and schools in the Western United State. Below is a breakdown of the top APR scores among schools in the West (Pac-10, WAC, and Mountain West Conferences)

And for those who like football

WALK-ON U.: UHs walk-on program, monitored by associate head coach and secondary coach Rich Miano, has produced many standout players for the Warriors over the years, namely 2007 Heisman Trophy finalist and record-setting quarterback Colt Brennan. Miano was a walkon himself who later spent 11 seasons in the NFL. Former walk-ons currently on NFL rosters include defensive end Ikaika Alama-Francis (Miami), long snapper Jake Ingram (New England), linebacker Travis LaBoy (San Francisco), fullback Reagan Mauia (Arizona), and punter Mat McBriar (Dallas). Prominent walk-ons on this years squad include quarterback Bryant Moniz, center Bronson Tiwanak, defensive linemen Liko Satele and Kamalu Umu, linebacker Corey Paredes, and safety Richard Torres.

  47. Shoko October 20, 2010 7:36 am

All I can say is that everytime I watch a game on the Smurf Turf is that is looks like crap in HD.

  48. Michigan Warrior October 20, 2010 7:38 am

My concern with Utah State is the stated fact that they will go to the no-huddle to try to gain an advantage. LaTech tried it, and our defense answered. Only way to kill that is to kill the drive. And we gotta pay attention to that back sliding out into the flat.

Looking forward to a great game for our Warriors!

  49. Shoko October 20, 2010 7:48 am

One of the things that I considered on whether the 3.5 point spread was on the low side for this weekends game is that USU had a bye week and had time to rest and prepare. However, I did come across an older article last week that stated its a myth. Well, at least with the major conferences. It mentioned the winning percentage is 48% for teams that had a bye week. Not sure what the statistic is for WAC teams. Might have to do some research later tonight when I have more time.

  50. Garret October 20, 2010 7:50 am

I agree with A-Joe that special teams can be a weapon. UH did lose several key games under JJ due to special teams (some nightmare plays against BSU come to mind right away). On the other hand, UH did have a lot of great returns from people like Chad Owens (ultimate special teams weapon) that won games for them. John Hardy-Tuilau seems like a weapon that can be built around on the FG block team.

However, the practice reports from SMU did say that from his very first practice JJ had them practicing special teams for 30+ minutes in every spring practice and most fall practices (JJ closed practices in the fall so I don’t know if they still do it), with Frank Ganz taking over practice each day for the first year and Dennis McKnight running it the past 2 years. I saw one interview where they talked about how they didn’t have as much talent as their opponents so they focused on special teams to win games for them.

Classic example of a special teams unit being a weapon:

This season, SMU opponents have attempted 10 FGs.

    5 FGs were blocked.

    3 FGs were missed.

    2 FGs were made.

One of the blocked FGs was run back for a TD. So, SMU is *outscoring* their opponents when the opponents try a FG. This is after they have played 7 of their 12 games.

I’ve never seen a stat like that before in my life, and it has won numerous games for them. In one game this year they blocked 2 FGs this season in a game they won by 3. Last year they won at C-USA champion East Carolina by 7 after blocking 2 FGs and returning one of the blocked FGs for a TD.

UH has a weapon in Hardy-Tuliau, but I’ve read that he was told to not try to block FGs in practice anymore because it was bad for the morale of the FG team. Hardy-Tuliau’s FG block against Army might have been the difference in the game because Army would have tried to just run out the clock on their last drive…it is a shame if the FG block unit cannot hone themselves into a real weapon.

He is now at 1800 votes and number 18!

Only 100 votes behind Arkansas’ Ryan Mallet…

  59. Michigan Warrior October 20, 2010 8:20 am

Moniz is now 95 votes behind Mallet of Arkansas. Wondering if Mallet will still be Arkansas’ QB, after getting a concussion and being replaced by Tyler Wilson during their game against Auburn.

One thing I noticed about the voting this week… lots of the guys that were ahead of Moniz in votes last week, lost over the weekend, making it somewhat easier for Moniz to catch up.

  65. Pomai October 20, 2010 8:49 am

To those of you who missed last nights opening of the fall schedule of the Na Wahine Softball season you missed two good games. The booster club held it’s first “Bobby Sox night” and it was a great success. The team “Hawaiian Delight” from Ewa Beach where the first to be invited, and they had an awesome time, it was fun to see these young girls getting into the games. They where only going to stay for the first game of the double header but after the first game they decided to stay for the second one also, after the game they got to meet and greet all the players, getting their autographs on their shirts and softballs that they brought. Coach Coolen expressed his thanks for them coming to the games and said that the girls(Na Wahine) told him they really enjoyed hearing them cheering for them.

We will be having teams coming from all over the islands to most of the games this season.

Also good to see fellow Tsaikos at the game, SailorBlue and Janice, Slugger, WassupDoc and Doc, Steve, papajoe2, anotherdave, myki & jerry, ralph, kazz and myself. So hope to see more of us at the next game on November 5th, when the team “Hiki No” will be there.

    Good Morning Tsaiko Nation !

Rainy day here in LA as hopefully sunshine looms over the weekend.

BIG game vs. the Aggies of Utah State as the Warriors will need a

GREAT effort from every stage of the game to come out successful.

Won’t be an easy task as State is TOUGH at home and will be playing

in front of their racous crowds as I do believe it’s a home coming game.

Hawaii is doing well BUT needs to continue WINNING for any kind of

respect from the so call college pronosticators and future of their

existance in the WAC or Independent status that they may become.

Talk with “ALL TIME UH GREAT” Gary Allen yesterday as I will be visting

him up in Baldwin Park where he resides. Mr Allen is doing well and raising

his wonderful family with a BEAUTIFUL Hawaiian wife that I have met on

several occasions. Gary is a GREAT guy as I will bring the wealth of ALOHA

to him as dinner and drinks are on me and his ENTIRE family !

I feel it is a neccessity to reach out to our former Hawaii players, regardless

of their situation and share to them their GREATNESS that they have brought

to Hawaii as I have GIFTS to give to him and a GREAT joy of apprecation, story

and laughter to share with his entire OHANA !

IF any of you LOYAL fans will want to leave a post of acknowledgement to him

PLEASE do as I will share your comments to him.

Take care Warrior Nation as I continue to take care of past Rainbow Warriors

    with HONOR and RESPECT !

    ALOHA !

I also am disappointed in the SA coverage of the Na Wahine. But Kazz is writing up something for our online newsletter. Will let you know when it’s up. Also we will be featuring a new and up coming reporter to our newsletter, J.T. Ka’umanua who is the great grandson of K.K. Ka’umanua, so stay tuned.

    Garret #50,

If the UH coaches are telling JHT to not go all out, that is a huge mistake. If they are having their feelings butt hurt, then the FG team should start improving.

Special teams have always had a huge impact on the game. Fresno State is a good example of special teams winning ball games for them. FSU hasn’t really had a really good offense or defense, but they still win games because of their special teams. Just like when we had Jason Elam to kick our FGs, or Harding to block field goals, or Owens to return for a TD, it makes a huge difference.

I hope the game is on ESPNU so I can actually watch and Tivo it. I love Tivo’ing the Wahine volleyball games.

    Danielle,

You should take one class at UH for the first semester to get your credits transferred to the UH system and take the rest of the classes at KCC. Never had classes at KCC, but I took classes at Windward, Leeward, and Honolulu Community College and I like the professors at the CCs better than the UH professors. I learned way more in community college than at UH.

The series is tied 5-5. However in WAC play, the Warriors lead 4-1 with their only loss 30-14 in Logan in 2008. In the four wins, UH has scored at least 49 points, including a 49-36 victory in Honolulu last season. In 2006, the Warriors won 63-10 in Logan, the second-most points scored on the road in school history.

Red Zone I don’t know, the only one I know of that is out due to injury is Jasper with a broken arm. Will try and find out if something is up. Maybe Kazz has some info? Kelly is ok after having a bad swing that looked like she may have tweaked something, but I think they took her out to be sure.

The Warriors enter the 2010 season with a pair of first-year coordinators. Offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich (31) and defensive coordinator Dave Aranda (33) are among the youngest in the country. And Through the first six games of the season, UH has produced 35 plays of 25-yards or more of which slot receiver Greg Salas has been involved in a team-leading 10 of those. Slot receiver Kealoha Pilares has been a part of seven big plays this season, five of which resulted in touchdowns of 56, 65, 30, 48, and 66. He also had an 80-yard non-scoring reception from Moniz against Colorado. On the flip side, UH surrendered 25 big plays of 25 or more yards, six of which resulted in touchdowns.

Danielle on #11 and DPK on #14,

I concur with DPK who is right “on the money” (as usual). KCC is a beautiful campus with much more affordable tuition, etc. Got to take a tour of their campus last year. The biggest selling point (from my perspective) was the emphasis on student support & mentoring. Moreso than some of the other CCs I’ve seen, they ‘urge’ their faculty to do more active mentoring. In addition, students there, after a year, are given opportunities to mentor other students (and get paid for it). They say that “hindsight is 20-2o”; if I could go back in a time-machine, I would’ve gone to KCC back then, although this version would’ve been superior in support to the CCs they had back in the day.

    back then.

Hawaii Five-O lost its Monday ratings war in the 5th week for the first time to some show “Castle” on ABC. I watched Castle and didn’t think it was special. CBS is saying if Hawaii Five-O ratings keep getting worse, they may not film the rest of the 11 episodes to end this season. That’s fickle of CBS. You gotta give it a chance. The scripts are good, the cast has chemistry. Our state needs Five-O to bolster our economy and it employs our local people and gives em jobs. Stupid, stupid , stupid viewing audience in every one of the 50 states. Well, if it gets cancelled, they have no right to cry! And not forgetting this is a sports blog, the UH better not take the Aggies lightly. We all remember 2008. And road games are unpredictable. I believe the only way the Warriors will lose if they hurt themselves and don’t play their game. Ane of course faulty officialting. Every team is now aware of Salas, and Pilares and will double team them. Rolo got to set up the 3rd and 4th receivers with special plays to take advantage of that. And the defense has got to continue their A game and get to the Aggies quarterback who hurt Hawaii so badly in 2008. I’m worried about Hawaii Five-O and this game. I hope it turns out alright. Book em McMacko!!!

Saw the highlights about recruit Tyler Trosin from Folsum, California. This guy is really, really good. I mean he’s impressive. The thing I noticed about him is that he has a very quick burst with his first step and he moves at the same speed when changing directions which is fast. In the open he is hard to stop. He catches the ball great. You can seen that this guy will be a very good player as a receiver. And he isn’t bad as a defensive back either. I know UH is on him, but if they aren’t they should take a look at this kid. He would be perfect for our offense.

    Good morning Tsaikos…

Happy Birthday Kinda Shy…Best wishes to you on this special day!!!

Special teams…special teams….special teams….the third part of the game, and an important third part it is. If the kickoff/punt coverage is good and opposing teams can be pinned deep in their own territory, that helps the kicking/punting team tremendously….on the flip side, bad coverage allows opposing teams to gain great field position and also gives them confidence and morale boosts when they really need it. Football is a game of field position and special teams has the ability to really affect that.

  101. SteveM October 20, 2010 10:31 am

  107. Kazz (click to support Wahine softball) October 20, 2010 10:51 am

RE: Wahine Softball Exhibition DH vs Christian Brothers University

-Jori Jasper suffered a broken arm on the practice scrimmage on 10/15/2010. She has a hard cast not really sure how long she will be out. Time appears to be on her side as she has all of fall as softball is a spring sport. Again, just my assumption. That appears to put a wrinkle in the competition for 1st base. With Jori out for the time being, looks like it could be between Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu and Sarah Robinson. Both are juniors.

-Kelly Majam did fall a little awkwardly in the second game off a big swing. She got up and tried again but Coach Coolen appeared to pull her out just in case. Coach Coolen has said on the radio yesterday that they are “reeling her in” as to really maintain her energy level due to the lack of natural thyroid enzymes. Last night’s thing was no big deal. People need to remember that she also will have to undergo radiation treatment in December during winter break and the season starts in February. Obviously some questions remain after that as far as how she will react to it in terms of playing softball. What happens happens. Main thing is her overall health.

-Overall attendance floated anywhere between 195-180. Good turn out from the visiting Christian Brothers University team. Coach Coolen said they approached him about playing as they apparently will also be playing their fellow D2 softball members HPU.

-Freshman newcomer Jazmine Zamora had some good at bats and stood out the most of all the signees. I missed watched Kliebenstien catch. Saw Jocelyn Enrique and transfer Ashley Smith share duties behind the plate though.

-Jenna Rodriguez did not play. She was there with her jersey but not completely suited up to play.

Overall it was exactly what I expected for an exhibition game. Lots of subbing in and out between positions, but not so much at 3rd base as Melissa Gonzalez pretty much played a lot in both games with freshman Gerika Pantohan playing about 2 innings in her place for the end of the second game.

Like Pomai said, the “Hawaiian Delight” team had fun and provided a lot of noise and enthusiasm for the Wahine. Traci Yoshikawa, Kanani Pu’u-Warren, Tanisha Milca and Amanda Taualii we also in attendance. Looks like Taualii will serve as a student assistant/team manager this season along with Milca again. Alumnae Kate Robinson was also in the press box.

Some football players stopped in. Lewis Walker and Alex Green were some guys I recognized right away and also saw bball player Douglas Kurtz.

Lots of “regulars” in attendance also.

  108. madeinhawaii October 20, 2010 10:53 am

Someone on SportsHawaii claims that the story is untrue, that they were all checked in by 9pm PST (12 pm Hawaii Time) the night before. Whatever the case, whomever or whoever decided to book them to arrive the day before made a poor decision. Here you have a team that has struggled for 62 years to finally get ranked again and instead of pulling out all the plugs and insuring that your team will be at their best in a place that they haven’t won since they were last ranked, you book them to arrive the night before. Yep.. smart thinking, Coach. There plummets your ticket sales and all your savings.

    Late observation/comment:

Special teams play, kick-off, seemed to work well in the 1st half as they were able to corral the ball carrier. 1st UH player kept missing the ball carrier and wanted to see him “sweep” him with a good ankle tackle.

The swing passes out to the flat was also working in the 1st half, but abandoned in the 2nd half. Accounted for a lot of passing yards.

Reasons for not continuing both in the 2nd half?

Nevada surely used the swing pass well for their last 2 TDs – made UH defense look bad!!

Will Rolo use the 5-wideout formation and more swing passes at USU?

  118. Kazz (click to support Wahine softball) October 20, 2010 11:41 am

  123. A-House October 20, 2010 11:56 am

    No huddle offense:

Is it a tough one for defensive coaches to get players ready and send in ASAP when the previous play ends? Have a “package” ready based on the success/failure of the offense – ie, nickle package if 3rd and long. Maybe, watch the first 10 plays or less to make a judgement on how the USU OC will be calling plays; you know, get their MO!

Of course, defenders on the field must also know that replacements are coming in.

  126. madeinhawaii October 20, 2010 12:10 pm

    No huddle offense:

I think the Warriors’s ever developing ability to push in and collapse the opposition’s pocket, as well as, contain the outside routes will put a severe damper on Utah State’s no huddle offense.

Got to watch for those short pass patterns as they try to go over the top and gain 4-5 quick ones.

Maybe it’s because Nevada woulda figured out how to defend it? Change it up in the second half and give the opponent another set of plays to figure out & obfuscate them? I dunno, but it could work.

Go the Kapiolani CC route, it’s cheaper, you’ll be able to select and take the courses you want, whereas, at UH Manoa it’s more difficult to sign up for courses you need and want- the demand is greater than the availability of the classes.

UH Manoa made the transfer to Manoa from the CC seamless last year, being in the UH system your courses are automatically transferred to UH upon acceptance to UH Manoa. As Stephen Tsai stated, your GPA doesn’t transfer but the courses are credited and applied where applicable to fulfill core, arts and science, etc. requirements.

Around lunch time they showed “Varsity” hot dogs

sell about 30,000 a day—and boy did they look good!

I never saw a popular hot dog joint in Hawaii lately

tho I vaguely remember eating waffle dogs from KC (?)

And any good hot dog places around today?

  188. kev-1 October 20, 2010 1:54 pm

chopsueyboy . . . thanks for the link. Looks like pure speculation, though. I was so angry with the Raiders for how they treated Colt, I’m not sure how I would feel about him going back to the Raiders. A job is a job I guess. But I can’t help but want him to have an honest shot at showing what he can do.

I know he bought a one way ticket to Hawaii and was just planning on waiting for a call, but I hope he hasn’t given up hope. I think he should take a little time to spend time with that hot girl he was with on the sidelines (WOW . . . no disrespect to any females reading, but she was puuuurrrrty) then return to Arizona to train like he has been. It will show teams that he is committed to working on his skills.

I wish someone would do an extensive interview with him, like a “Sit Down With Colt” column or something so his fans can get a better idea of his mindset and maybe some hints of things that have been going on behind the scenes that we may not know about. Maybe there are other teams that have shown some interest or something.

ST . . . I hear you have a good relationship with Colt. Maybe your the man for the job?

If you ask me, Colt Brennan is perfect for the Jacksonville Jaguars. David Garrard got hurt and left the game in the end of the 1st half of Monday’s nights game and didn’t return. The backup, Edwards, was terrible throwing 3 interceptions and isn’t mobile. Their 3rd string QB is Zach Miller who is a tight end and he was basically an emergency QB and he didn’t play QB in the game.

Hot Dogs are just not really a local thing. I mean they’re good and no one disputes that, but the hot dog itself is more of a mainland thing and here we have the mix-mash of local stuff.

When one thinks of a hot dog in local food, it’s sitting on a bed of rice as part of a bento.

Puka Dog is just awesome though. Hot hot habanero w/guava relish and mango mustard…. Plus the fresh-squeezed lilikoi lemonade… nice!

I would LOVE To see Colt Play in the NFL the Raiders not so much but if he can go there an start helping them WIN then he’d be getting more publicity. Colt hasnt been given a fair chance with his 2 injuries an then he finally gets healthy he gets released. But you know what thats all excuses which I’m not trying to do. I just wanna see a Hawaii player succeed in the NFL espically Colt with how he was labeled if he does good that automatically rises the stock of the Hawaii QB’s an that could be used in recruiting advantage. So GO COLT as the saying goes “ONCE A WARRIOR, ALWAYS A WARRIOR” I Believe

The team flew from Reno to a West Coast departure city for the Hawaii-bound flight. Unfortunately, there was a nine-hour delay. They did not land in Honolulu until 4 am Saturday morning. They didn’t get to the hotel until sometime after that, and it was probably closer to 5 or 6

    Moniz Record to date:

Season Pass PaYd PaTD Int RuAtt RuYd RuTD Pts

    2008 0-0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0.00

    2009 180-318 2360 14 10 56 143 1 178.70

    2010 186-283 2532 21 4 40 69 1 232.18

Thru 7 games and 7 more to go could end up with 5,060 Passing yards with 42 TD.

Maybe even additional yardage and touchdown the way Moniz is playing now.

Also notice that he is running less; meaning there is marked improvement in pass protection and less of a pass breakdown.

Way to Go Warriors up front and to Coach Shaw who don’t get enough credit for Moniz Pass Protection. It is a sign of great protection and more time to pass to see though the progressions to see the coverage from Saleas to Pilares to Pollard to Green and finally Bradley. phew! No wonder Warriors are leading in many pass statistics.

But also deadly is Moniz scambling ability as we saw in Nevada pass to Sales.

With is scambling ability he can re-do the progressins again which becomes even more dangerous.

The Aggies might have a decent pass defense right now, but they have yet to face an aerial attack like the one the Warriors set into motion each time they hit the field. Expect to see the Warriors play well on the mainland yet again and bring home the victory.

Sorry – when I posted #228, I was (like all pakes) reading backwards from #227 towards the middle – didn’t know Hank’s hautdogs were being discussed.

We usually buy the Kosher hotdogs (Hebrew National) from Costco and occasionally the Oscar Meyer 100% beef ones from Safeway.

Forgot the name but in Manoa Marketplace, there is a sandwich shop that sells Nathan’s hotdog – they grill them but for some reason, they don’t taste the same as the ones I used to get in NYC – maybe in NYC they really grill them!

There is a place in NJ which got featured in one of those food programs I see on channel 325 on best hotdog joints in America. They deep-fry them. Went there, tried it, not bad but maybe not worth a special trip!

No prob! Even the sideline reporter for the WAC Sports Network said that the Nevada team didn’t arrive until 4pm Friday afternoon, so the guy’s story from that site is bunk any way you put. And for good measure, Nevada spent only one night on island…they left immediately after the game on a non-stop flight back to Reno, per this flight track:

Had to catch an early flight to Kona for work. Saw Stretch running through the airport to catch his plane.

Anyway, on my return to HNL I’m walking through the terminal and I see a bunch of guys flashing green (mostly) “H” logo shirts. I look more closely and I realize “It’s them! It’s the TEAM!” And so it was.

The guys looked good, focused, very business-like. That’s one thing for which Mack and staff haven’t been given enough credit by some. Mack has clearly made it a policy to recruit solid citizens and solid students. Character counts and that’s why Mack’s teams always show marked improvement over the course of a season.

I was also glad to see that a number of the airport workers called out encouragement as the guys walked by, all of whom responded well. A number of people also asked to take photos with Mo. A sign of things to come, I bet.

It looks like the Pac-12 expects to go from $5.3 million per team in TV money to double or triple the money. This is going to make it harder for the rest of the schools in the US to compete with them.

The Pac-12 will begin negotiations shortly on new TV contracts, and expectations are they will amount to between $10.8 million to $14.1 million per school per year. The league’s current combined annual football and basketball TV revenues total only about $53 million.

BYU just showed how scheduling is possible for an independent. They signed a 4-game deal with Georgia Tech that will play the games in *October*, right in the middle of the conference schedule.

The teams will play in Atlanta on Oct. 13, 2012, and Oct. 11, 2014. Two games are also scheduled for Provo on Oct. 12, 2013, and Oct. 14, 2017.

BYU is making progress in scheduling its games as an independent. So far, it has future games set with Oregon State, Texas, Utah, UCF and Boise State, in addition to WAC teams Utah State, Hawaii, Louisiana Tech, Idaho, San Jose State and New Mexico State. It has 10 games set for next season, its first as an independent.

  246. Garret October 20, 2010 3:43 pm

The Pac-12 apparently is directing its schools to schedule all conference games for the first 3 weeks of the season. That means no late-season games against Pac-12 teams.

Nice Q&A with Sol Elimimian. Here is his answer when he was asked how it was to play in paradise.

My older brother, Abraham, a cornerback, played there. He told me I would really like it. But it was a big cultural difference at first. It was tough, because I couldn’t just get in a car and drive home to see my folks. I got very homesick

My first year. I’d save up my money and fly home on bye weeks just to visit for two or three days. But I grew to love Hawaii. After this season is over, I’m going back there to visit some of my closest friends.

  269. Derek October 20, 2010 4:57 pm

    Here’s this week’s prognostication.

    Hawaii Utah State

    Offense 11th 475.14 yds. 74th 358 yds.

    Scoring 12th 37.5 points 90th 21.67 points

    Defense 58th 359.1 yds. 84th 390.3 yds.

    Rushing Defense 81st 166.4 yds. 77th 160.1 yds.

    Passing Defense 37th 193 yds. 84th 230 yds.

Hawaii is 4-1 the last 5 games winning with an average score of 54-27. The last time at Utah St. in 2008, HI failed to score on three separate 1st and Goal opportunities. On top of that, Malcom Lane fumbled a long punt return on about the 5 yard line just before he made it to the end zone for a touchdown. Now, Hawaii is on a 4 game winning streak beating La Tech, Fresno, and Nevada and has played some very solid football. Hawaii is also has a better turnover ratio than Utah St. After surprising BYU at home, they got buried at San Diego St. 7-41 and lost at La Tech 6-24. Utah St. had a BYE last week. Did it help them? Who knows. The Sagarin Ratings has Hawaii by 14 points. I believe the Warriors will be able to score a lot of points. It is USU’s homecoming, but Hawaii remembers the last time we went up there so they won’t take them lightly. UH’s defense has been playing w/ a lot of passion and energy and will get some turnovers and stops.

    Pomai,

    I’ll say Hawaii 52, Utah State 17.

Read an article in which a college coach did something cold-blooded to a student athlete.

John Cook, volleyball head coach with the Univ. of Nebraska, offered a scholarship to a high school student athlete this past spring. 3 weeks before early signing period, he calls the student athlete and rescinds the scholarship offer. He has done this in the past a few times. Student athlete is a model citizen and has never been in trouble. Talk about cold-blooded.

According to that flight tracker for Nevada’s charter they had a crazy tailwind on their way back — 4:39 from HNL to Reno is really hauling (especially for a 737.) The stop in SFO on their way there could have certainly been for fuel — Reno to HNL is probably pushing it in 737-800 against a headwind depending on what configuration that 737-800 was.

Also, I’ve met a guy recently who is a dead ringer for Paul Hogan, Crocodile Dundee. Plus, about 35 years ago when I was working in Waianae at a bank, this guy came in and I had to look twice because standing face to me way Sidney Portier. However, my co-worker said he’s not Sidney Portier and the man also said he’s not the actor. To this day, I still swear that he was Sidney Portier.

We, the family, has visited Reno 3 or 4 times and our stop in SF was about 3.5 hours (UAL); enough time to eat a lunch and wonder around the airport. Once we used Aloha Airlines via John Wayne in Orange County airport (LA) and arrived in Reno past midnight – never did that again as we were wasted for 2 days. On the return flight, our plane left Reno at 6:15am bound for Orange County (earliest shuttle from Silver Legacy left at 5am).

Brew, do you add 10 yards or 17 yards? Ten for the distance from the goal to the endline, and seven for the standard distance that the kick is placed form the line of scrimmage. So a 18 yard kick would be from the 1 yard line. A 40 yard kick would be from the 23 yard line. Just wondering.

  315. madeinhawaii October 20, 2010 9:14 pm

    Brew so we had

At least 29 trips to the Redzone. ( Although I think there were a couple where we tried to go for it on fourth and failed.)

    14 ended with FG attempts

    11 resulted in Field Goals

    15 resulted in Touchdowns

13 touchdowns were from long yardage plays.

Essentially 50% in the Red zone insofar as scoring touchdowns are concerned.

  319. Pride. October 20, 2010 9:24 pm

Brew, can you please go down to the 49ers facility and kick those Niner players in the kololele. Tell the O-line that they are slow off the ball. They are all playing too high. Be concientious about their footwork. their footwork is terrible. At least tell them to take the proper first step. They lose leverage on every play bcause they don’t take the proper steps. At the NFL level, everyone is strong, everyone is fast. Proper technique and attention to detail is everything.

If they don’t have a quick get-off, they cancel the advantage of knowing the count. Pau, right there. Already lost six inches of leverage by being slow off of the ball. Improper first step, lose six more inches. One foot behind the defender right there already. No wonder cannot block anybody, no leverage. Play too high? Pau, lose already. Just like judo…or sumo…all leverage.

  321. Pride. October 20, 2010 9:31 pm

Speaking of leverage. Got to watch a recording of the Hawaii/Nevada game. Warrior defensive line with a quick getoff, and low pad level. Nevada offense had no chance. Hawaii d-line played behind the line of scrimmage. Taua had no chance to run downhill, his O’line was in his face all night. Great job by the Warrior dline on a great getoff, and explosive hips and hands. They were under Nevada’s linemen all night. I thought that Nevada had those shoes with wheels or skates underneath like my nieces and nephews use. Line kept skating back, right into the quarterback. Great job defense.

  326. BG October 20, 2010 9:37 pm

    A-House

You mentioned how effectively Nevada ran their swing passes. They did guess well when we would be blitzing. However, in the first td by Taua and an identical play for a significant gain that set up the last td, the cornerback (Bryant) was in position to make the tackle and both times he was blocked from the side by the O-tackle (I think) who didn’t come close to getting his head in front. Both times the official was right there in position but didn’t see it for some reason. The stadium replay showed it plainly, but the ESPN feed only showed the aftermath of the block.

Off Topic: While watching the news I noticed more and more political commercials about how bad their opponents are. This just proves to me that both of the candidates shouldn’t represent us in Congress. Even the governor’s political campaign is what each candidate negatively did or didn’t do or said. How about telling us voters how you guys going fix whatever ails us. Like the sewer fee tripling in the next 5 years. What going happen when I cannot afford to pay that? If I could afford $400/500 dollars more, I would own a new car already.

#321 Pride, Big difference from the first game ya. I’M glad they are improving. The first few games the Dline looked like they were dancing the waltz with the O line. Now, they are penetrating and plugging holes and tackling too. I hope the 49ers pick that up too. LEVERAGE!!

papajoe2. It might have been the preseason camp that had no scrimmages and very little hitting. The beginning of the season was like scrimmages and pre-season games all wrapped up in three real games. By the third game, the team was ready to play. Just speculating of course. Could also be that the defense was still functioning in the consciously-incompetent quadrant. They then moved to the consciously-competent quadrant. Maybe right now they will be moving from the consciously-competent quadrant to the unconsciously-competent quadrant.

It is pretty messed up that TCU’s coach apparently did this without concern for his player’s health…I think that SMU was within a TD (they actually might have been ahead when this occurred) of TCU at the time. TCU’s team doctor has reportedly complained to TCU administrators about Patterson’s treatment of player injuries in the past but nothing was done.

TCU football coach Gary Patterson berated team physician Dr. Sam Haraldson on the sideline during the Horned Frogs’ Sept. 24 game at SMU for concluding that running back Ed Wesley had a concussion and could not return to the game, a story in the American Medical News online reported Monday.

Dr. Haraldson told amednews.com that he “was verbally accosted by the coach, screaming at me insanely at the top of his lungs that he doesn’t think [Wesley] has a concussion and what right do I have to hold him out.”

The game was televised by ESPN and the verbal exchange was shown live. When asked about the incident the Sunday after the game Patterson said, “It’s none of your business. As far as I’m concerned [Wesley] was fine 10 minutes after he was hurt.”

According to several sources at TCU, Wesley was knocked unconscious for a few seconds.

    Garret-

Similiar situation when W.Virginia’s coach did the same with QB Pat White. Kept him playing after being knocked lights out, then recovering on the sideline.

Had a concussion, stated by the team doctor on the sideline.

The severity of this awareness is finally being recognized.

Good morning whitey. The US economy will benefit significantly by the $60 billion in foreign arm sales…75,000 high-paying jobs for sales overseas will have a major impact.

I’m also glad that Intel is building its $8 billion factory in the US…1,000 permanent high-paying jobs will be a significantly boost to Oregon’s economy and the 8,000 jobs to build the factory will put a lot of people to work now when job creating is needed. If that factory was in Hawaii the economic impact would be unbelievable, changing the economy around literally overnight…but Intel has an amazing setup in Oregon.

Been thinking about all the new rule changes in the nfl, and was wondering if rugby is as violent as football? I have never really seen a rugby game that why I’m asking. But if it is do they have as many injuries as football?

ok, back to fb. hope da warriors had no problems with their flight. am assuming they left on hawaiian in the pm, arrived in vegas around midnight, and will have a late practice today. sounds like the team is very, very serious about playing and with their new level of play, it should be a fun game for them.

  397. d1島 October 21, 2010 6:04 am

  398. whitey October 21, 2010 6:06 am

pomai, i think if you take away the helmet and shoulder pads, the nfl would be a very different game, but become very similar to rugby in contact. Can you see football players without helmet and shoulder pads???? I remeber growing up and playing tackle football at the park with no protection and of course, no shoes. hadashi. no one ever had major injuries, mostly bruised pride.

That certainly is terrific news for folks in the Hillsboro area. Although the article doesn’t actually say where the new factory will be, I guess it makes sense that it would be close to the other two. Real nice area; close to Pacific U. in Forest Grove.

    #290 Ronnie ~

Those sly WAC Stabers came out of the tunnel just as the Warriors were heavy into the 5-0 song. I hate wen any team takes advantage of our band’s rousing rendition of that theme song.

Thank goodness for the people in Warrior Mojo’s section. They gave them a very loud chorus of boo’s as soon as they appeared! Meanwhile the rest of the stadium roared as our guys burst out of the fog.

I sit on the concourse just above the tunnel, and it

gets really LOUD as they stream out on to the field.

This is the bonus attending the game brings. There is NO way of describing the heart pounding pride that wells up as you get caught up in the full-on experience of being in the middle of total

    chaos!

To have the Coltster at the entrance of the tunnel was indeed a high blood pressure moment. With a mic in hand, he pumped the team and the crowd, as they came roaring out. led by Mo carrying the Hawaiian flag, it’s a pure chicken skin moment.

NCAA stats show two extra trips into the red zone. Must’ve been against Charleston Southern, and we must’ve turned the ball over, because the ESPN stats (when D-IA plays against D-IAA) doesn’t go into the extra detail.

  415. Slugger October 21, 2010 7:28 am

    Good morning, gang!

  416. papajoe2 October 21, 2010 7:33 am

MW any stats on inside the Red Zone when we didn’t score a touchdown? I know we kicked a lot of field goals, but I’m also interested in when we just couldn’t score. I know USC and Colorado prevented us from scoring at times from very close.

  417. Kazz blogging via DROID X October 21, 2010 7:36 am

I know some people dont like Bobby Curran, but Josh Pacheco SUCKS.

Two days before a UH football game and he spends all this time rapping about MLB…

MW, Anyway, thanks for the scoring stats. Must have took a lot of time.

This is a reflection of what college football is turning into.

As evidenced by the greed of conference expansion, the student athletes are turning into pawns…

    Michigan Warrior

The red zone stats don’t really do justice to the Army game since we didn’t “settle” for the game winning field goal — it was kicked on first down with time running short. No attempts at a TD were made from within the red zone on that drive.

I think there is a qualitative difference between taking a few shots at a TD, not converting, and then taking a field goal within the red zone compared to taking a FG due to time at the end of a half or the game. It is hard to reflect that difference within stats though.

  422. Michigan Warrior October 21, 2010 7:47 am

We were still in the Red Zone and settled for a FG, instead of trying for a TD, with time running out. It is what it is. If wee squander opportunities due to poor time management, or wasting time outs, that’s our problem. We still didn’t go for a TD, and opted for a FG.

  423. Michigan Warrior October 21, 2010 7:48 am

In the NCAA’s eyes, we were in the Red Zone, even if there were only 6 or 3 seconds left.

  424. papajoe2 October 21, 2010 7:53 am

TRUE STORY: A long tome ago when I was coaching soccer, we had tryouts for an advanced team. Prior to the tryouts, I was watching most of the boys that would be trying out, playing in a game. One guy got hit solidly on the side of his head. He complained of double vision, but refused to see a doctor. During the tryouts, he asked me to play. Being a coach, I know its better to error on the safe side and refused to put him in. The kid kept bugging me. I explained to him that he could have a detached retina. which could lead to blindness. He didn’t care and still insisted on playing. I had to explain to him that if it is a detached retina, he would need an operation to correct it and could even leave him blind. He still wanted to play. Then I told him that if he had an operation, to reach his retina, the doctors would have to go through his ass. Never heard a peep out of him the rest of the day.

  425. madeinhawaii October 21, 2010 7:56 am

Didn’t the Officials refuse to put back 23 seconds onto the clock in the Army game?

  426. Michigan Warrior October 21, 2010 7:58 am

According to the NCAA’s official stats, we had 33 Red Zone Opportunities.

    We scored 27 times… 6 Rush, 11 Pass, 10 FG’s.

That means we failed to do anything on 6 other opportunities…

    1) I know we fumbled the first time down at Colorado.

    2) We then missed a FG the next time down.

    3) We had a fumble against LaTech.

    4) We missed a FG against Fresno State.

    5) We missed a FG against Reno.

    6) Since one of our trips into the Red Zone is missing, I’m guessing it was a turnover against Charleston Southern.

#426… papajoe2… that is too funny!!!

  428. papajoe2 October 21, 2010 8:00 am

My #426 is just a reflexion about the TCU coach yelling at the trainer for not letting one of his players go back in the game after the player suffered a concussion.

  429. Slugger October 21, 2010 8:01 am

    mih,

True, I think Coach Mack made that point to an official but no action.

    Where is out fearless leader?

  430. Slugger October 21, 2010 8:02 am

    out = our

He may be out…when was he travelling?

  431. madeinhawaii October 21, 2010 8:04 am

There were three interception in the Charleston game so you’re probably right..

  432. Michigan Warrior October 21, 2010 8:07 am

Sorry… My #428 above is wrong. We didn’t miss any Red Zone FG’s against Fresno. The one we missed was from the Fresno30.

So, I was right the first time in guessing that we had two missed opportunities against Charleston Southern. Those just aren’t detailed in ESPN’s Summary. But, we definitely struggled with scoring in the 3rd quarter of that game. We only had one TD in the third quarter of that game, and one TD and one FG in the fourth quarter. We also had 3INT’s and 1 fumble.

  433. papajoe2 October 21, 2010 8:07 am

MW, thanks for the info. Sorry to bring up old grumblings, but I just was wondering if we did go for 2, what the odds were to have made it, as I knew we had problems scoring in close. Looks like we were actually better or about the same scoring from distance. OK pau the non 2pt. conversion attempt in the last game. Onward to kick some Addie ass. I’m sorry about the Addie part. Should have been Abbie. Oopps, should have been Aggie. Does and Aggie even have a butte? What is it?

  434. mctruck October 21, 2010 8:10 am

Been reading some articles of newspapers in Utah this morning….most indicate that Utah State’s best defense is to keep their offense on the field to eat up time; doing so with their running game……so I guess same approach this week like last week…shut down their qb/rb’s and the machine stops. Heads up everybody, no distractions.

  435. detox foot pad October 21, 2010 8:11 am

Just browsed these ideas you wrote. They are most appealing and useful. I love how you put them into a viewpoint.

  436. mctruck October 21, 2010 8:12 am

Keeping my fingers crossed for better perfomance by UH in the red zone and improvement in special teams play.

  437. madeinhawaii October 21, 2010 8:12 am

So of 33 touchdowns, 18 were from the redzone … 14 from breaking a long one (two were from rushes, 12 from pass plays) and 1 from an interception by Bryant returned for Touchdown by Jeramy Bryant.

Still no Punt return for TD or Kickoff returned for TD…

  438. papajoe2 October 21, 2010 8:13 am

Sorry about my miss spelling on reflection in my #430. Trying to get fancy and being “cool” but my proof reading, I didn’t feel that way.

ppj2 ~ It’s so obvious that you did, in fact attend public school. Any recess junkie would know that Aggies refers to the ‘marbles’ that used to be coveted by afficianado’s of the game.

Unfortunately, today’s school yard bullies now sport ipads loaded with hi-tech video games that allow them to learn how to be more hateful then ever!

  442. madeinhawaii October 21, 2010 8:23 am

    MW…

According to those stats, Hawaii would be better off going for the big one from outside of the Red zone when playing Idaho #21, SJSU #21, and Boise #8.

  443. madeinhawaii October 21, 2010 8:24 am

It may be, however, that SJSU hasn’t had much opportunity to defend in the Red Zone.

pomai, i think if you take away the helmet and shoulder pads, the nfl would be a very different game, but become very similar to rugby in contact. Can you see football players without helmet and shoulder pads???? I remeber growing up and playing tackle football at the park with no protection and of course, no shoes. hadashi. no one ever had major injuries, mostly bruised pride.

whitey— you sure you remember all? We used to play 11-man football that way too, but I remember walking around on two sprained ankles (I only had one sprain when the game started) and having a blurry black eye for 3 days. One game ended early when my friend got a front tooth embedded in his forehead, but fortunately they went emergency together and he got his tooth back in. His mom insisted he only play with a football helmet, but he didn’t want to be the only one with a helmet. 🙂 But yeah, fun and exciting days…

  452. Michigan Warrior October 21, 2010 8:44 am

Boise State has only had 11 drives enter their Red Zone so far this year… giving up only 6TD’s and 1FG.

SJSU has had 35 drives into their Red Zone, and given up 21 TD’s and 5FG’s.

Idaho has done a little better, with 23 drives into their Red Zone, and giving up 9TD’s and 8FG’s.

I think we’ve clamped down pretty good since the first three games. We’re getting better, but I’d like to see a shutout one of these years. Seems like we haven’t shutout anyone in ages. I think the last time we pitched a shutout was when Idaho, New Mexico State, and Utah State first joined. That was back about 5 years ago.

Moniz is currently at #11 and Top 16 finalist will be annouced on Monday, October 25th.

The Selection Committee will select Top Three Finalist on November 22nd.

We would need to up ante vote daily to Promote More than currently +200 in order to catch up to BSU QB Moore @ #2. We need 10,000 More Vote.

Finalist Voting: Beginning Monday Oct 25th – closing Nov 21st. But the fan vote will count for only 5% of the overall Finalist vote. Basically, its up to the Selection Committee.

But Keep on Voting, we need all the votes to keep moving Moniz UP to Top Three Finalist.

Send email to everyone you know to Vote Vote Vote like hell… Go Moniz!

    Red Zone Opportunities: 31

Red Zone Touchdowns: 18* Pollard catch/fumble recovered by Salas counted here.

    Red Zone Field Goals: 10

So by these numbers we scored 28 out of 31 tries in the red zone. So the only three times we didnt score was against Colorado? If that is so than those are some pretty good numbers. I mean we are def. doing better in the Red Zone this year than last.

  461. Hilo-Warrior October 21, 2010 11:53 am

And for the Shut outs was our last shut out against Idaho at Idaho in 05? Might have happened again since. But I really thought that we had Nevada’s number last week and I thought that we were going to Shut Them Out. Oh my How Great that would have been.

  462. PolyMom October 21, 2010 1:21 pm

    5) We missed a FG against Reno.

    6) Since one of our trips into the Red Zone is missing, I’m guessing it was a turnover against Charleston Southern.

MICHIGAN WARRIOR it kills me when they can not score from the RED ZONE. Hawaii could have upset USC had they been able to get in for the Touchdown and not the field goals.

    PapaJoe2–the soccer story was hilarious!!!

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

All these detox treatments require only one key point and that is perseverance. Try it for at least 10 days before trying to emit an opinion on the overall performance, bear in mind this is a well known cleanse that has been around for quite a while, and that would be more then enough time to determine a scam. Stand strong, and the results you desire will happen.
