Remember the kids who would raise their hands to remind the teacher to assign homework?
They grew up to be UH football players.
This past Sunday was a mandatory off day in spring training. But several players went to the football office that day to study videos on their own. With new plays being implemented on offense and a new system being installed on defense, players were busy reviewing videos of Saturday’s practice in preparation for yesterday’s practice.
It’s a sign of a team’s determination when players think there isn’t enough time in spring training.

The Warriors have remained true to a practice formula in which the quarterbacks are getting an equal number of reps.
“It’s way too early to call,” coach Norm Chow said of the quarterback competition, which will extend through the summer. “We have to give them all a chance.”
The sleeper is Jeremy Higgins, who has made one start since transferring from Utah State in 2011. Ikaika Woolsey and Taylor Graham have better arm strength, but Higgins “moves the chains,” Chow said. “He’ll have the same opportunity as everybody else. He understands this style as well as any of those other quarterbacks.”
Each of the quarterbacks is practicing as if he were the starter.
“Absolutely,” Woolsey said. “When you come out here, you have to act like you’re the No. 1 guy. We all know it’s a tough competition, and they’re all my boys. But on the field, it’s business. Absolutely. You need that mindset of being that guy, taking over, and pushing everyone.”

Hmm, would be interesting if Higgins turns out like Schroeder. Comes out of camp as the number two guy and gets his chance because of an injury later in the season.
Think WBB has lower attendance compared to MBB. Their expenditures outweigh the revenue they generate.
During the 2012-2013 fiscal year, the WBB spent $1,630,677 and generated revenue of $335,574. In comparison, MBB spent $2,386,999 and generated revenue of $1,548,163.

That’s good to hear. The players with the strong work ethic usually pays off and is evident on the field. Hope the quarterbacks are watching lots of tape.
So, my most pressing concern for our boys is our secondary. I had some former teammates tell me that, they like what they see out of the front defensive seven, that even at this early, stage look more athletic and muscular, and will be much more of a force.
Now that said, they way we got beat in the secondary, albeit with some young guys, was very alarming last year. Big play after big play, chronicially taking bad angles, and almost non-existent backside leverage.
So, you more attentive observers and tsaikos, have you seen something otherwise with our DBs, to tell boola to chill out and relax….??
Is there any news on the USC QB and where he is deciding to play?

26… That’s kind of what I thought also, but it is a pure open competition, so equal reps is fair for now. Look for favorites to emerge in the coming week or two. I think Mr Reilly is itching to get in on the competition once he becomes active… Plus the mystery QB transfer that may or may not be coming.
Again, glad to hear the boys are committing more time in the film room outside the supervised practices. This team is doing all the right things off the field for success. Once it clicks on the field this fall, the program will rise again.

I wouldn’t worry about Wittek…I think he is looking for “bright lights”, so I’m sure that will mean Texas. Besides, he won’t be handed the QB job on a silver-platter…He’ll have to earn it by beating out the QBs we already have on the roster. I really wasn’t impressed with Wittek at USC, so unless he’s able to demonstrate “godly” skills, I don’t think he’ll be the holy grail everyone seems to think he is.
I agree with #44. We have three seasoned guys who have a grasp of the system in camp. They may not have the “star” rating of the fellow from USC but they have the experience in the system. Then there is Beau Reilly who wants to be here and will be given the opportunity to compete for time when he becomes eligible. And there is Aaron Z. Who is on his mission and should be a Warrior on his return.
I like this hand. I don’t like to be played, even if it was unintended. The folks here and who are coming want to be here and that counts for something.
If he was “godly” USC would have been BCS champs.

Just a few years ago, Marcus Mariota sat and watched from the sidelines as Jeremy Higgins’ back up. If Oregon can develop Higgins’ back up into a Heisman hopeful, imagine what Coach Chow could do with Higgins.

However, though he was ahead of Marcus Mariota in high school, one should not assume that he is superior to Marcus in college football.
I hope Jeremy will lead UH to a great season(s) but don’t put the pressure on him just because he once was regarded as a better QB than Marcus Mariota. That was two-three years ago and a lot of water has gone under the bridge.
Jeremy will be a good QB, no question about that. But he has to be his own man and the only comparison should be what Jeremy was and what Jeremy will be.

#39. It’s no surprise Chow is ranked the 127th best coach out of 128. From the outside looking in they could easily rank him last. When you look at his record, the progress he’s made and his comments on National TV about being too old what other ranking could they give him. If he lives up to his ranking this year Ben Jay will not be able to keep his job unless he cuts Chow loose.
My view of Chow has always been he’s not the type of coach who’s looking for a quick turn around or maybe not even capable of doing it. Prior to his hiring I posted if Chow is hired people will have to be patient – 3 to 4 years patient. My thinking was he wasn’t going to build on what was already here but he’ll tear everything down and start from scratch. Thought he’d need a minimum of 3 but more likely 4 recruiting classes to get enough of his type of players in.
What the outside view of Chow is not the same as mine. The biggest areas of improvement do not show up in his record and can’t be quantified as of yet. The strength and conditioning program is way better as evidence by Ewaliko. He’s getting more of the better recruits to stay home while bringing Mainland recruits that have the measurables for their position. The two year Mission recruits will soon be coming in to contribute.
Chow is making progress but too slowly for most. I’ve maintained that Chow is making progress in increments that in the long run will be a stable base for others to build on. I hope Chow can show enough improvement in the record book to buy him the time he needs.
What a waste of time having Yap spend the first 5 spring practices at linebacker. Wasn’t he up to like 290 lbs?? He belongs on the Dline and it shouldn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that. It’s not fair for this young man to be moved, not play in the new position and miss out on playing for pay after his senior year.

So what is Chows magic number in wins to get him his 4th season? Lots of people say Sheraton Bowl or bust. I’m thinking if he wins 4 games, game attendance stays at 20,000 and the team doesn’t get blown out, that will be enough for BJ to justify the 4th season. Oh yeah, the lack of buyout money will also play a factor.
I think Chow needs 6 wins, and that should be doable, hard but doable. If not I think with only 4 or 5 Chow retires…for a number of reasons!

Good morning all: In the last several weeks, we have been discussing among other things, a potential new, but smaller stadium, at UH. Along those lines, much commentary has also been to voice dismay at the length and cost of previous topics at UH. With that theme in mind, I thought some of you might find this interesting:
The Atlantic Cities magazine published a condensed analysis of seven main reasons that explain why U.S infrastructure project cost more than elsewhere. They are:
1. Davis-Bacon Laws: Passed in 1931, the Davis-Bacon Act mandates that laborers for federal public works projects receive local prevailing wages. (+22%)
2. Project Labor Agreements: In 2009, President Obama signed an executive order mandating that contractors for federal projects exceeding $25 million sign Project Labor Agreements, which guarantee the hiring of union workers. (+13~15%)
3. ‘Buy America’ Provision: For decades, this provision has discouraged projects from being built with manufactured goods made outside the U.S. Obama strengthened it in the 2009 stimulus package to include projects besides just highways. (+10~500%)*
4. Lengthy Environmental Reviews. (+10~25%)*
5. Transportation Alternatives Program: Everyone can agree that walking trails, complete streets, historic renovations, landscaping, and bike lanes are public goods, but should they be paid for with highway fund money? This is the current policy of the FHWA. (+5~20%)*

So…..Coach Chow moved Penitito Faalologo moved back to defensive line once again? Sad to see that happen as he would have been one of the hardest hitting fullbacks in the nation. Now he is an undersized defensive end but will bring lots of power to the D-line. It does make sense in a way since Chow will run a 4 receiver/1 RB set. Also, Faalologo has not received a scholarship stipend check like the other scholarship athletes because he is an international student. The school is probably out of funds because they paid him the last two semesters and being an international student wasn’t a problem. So Faalologo gets room, board, and tuition covered but the school doesnt give him any money to cover costs such as laundry, toiletries, etc. SMH! oh, he can’t work and cannot receive financial aid because of his international status!
Hey, nothing says that Chow can’t use Faalologo at fullback from time to time…especially on short yardage situations. None of this stuff is etched in stone you know.
