On the positive side …

There seems to be this perception that there’s a feeling of doom-and-gloom in Manoa. I know this because a couple of guys from a Boise radio station were worried about the mood. And you can understand the roots of the concern. The Warriors are 2-4, and they’ve lost key guys on both sides (Greg Alexander, Rodney Bradley, Brashton Satele, Aaron Brown, etc.)

And yet …

The mood is actually really upbeat. The Warriors have had their most animated practices the past two days. it’s that blend of energy and P.O. A team that believes it has nothing to lose is a dangerous team. And a loose one, too.

Listenied to Coach Mack on TV news last nite. He was riling us up, da troops, telling us peeps to back da team, they’re 2-4 but the team, day working hard, he’d like to see stadium sold out tomorrow.

imo, gotta teach Coach to look at the camera. gotta teach Coach to ask the interviewer off camera to ask the question they’ll be asking on camera so he has time to think about and compose his response, and then ask the camera guy to re-ask him the question on camera.

some guys are really good at on the spot talking.
some guys are really good at writing their response, usually because
they have more time to organize their thoughts.

coach is not a A type. Miano is a A type. Cal is a A type.
but for sure for sure, Coach is a good guy. so why the overall problems on da offense and defense? I’m thinking, the asst coaches can be broken up into two groups: the new guyz, Tormey, Shaw, MSmith in one puddle, and da oddaz in anudda puddle. which could explain why da whole wheel not exactly going round.

watcha think? maybe i get too much time on my hands on deze furlow days. maybe all this going round itself out over time. 😆

  17. bighilofan2 October 23, 2009 6:20 am

    hiya duffer,

  23. lava October 23, 2009 6:36 am

We have seen what does not work with, so I’d like to see us experiment and tinker until we come up with some winning combinations.

I think the major problem is the coaching staff not knowing the players strengths and weaknesses. Is Leon really the guy you want to throw too on 4th down? Maybe a TD if thrown to Pilares or Chizzy, since they have the agility to turn and dive for the end zone. Come Monday, I’d have each play list what they do best, and use that to help re-evaluate how the players can get on the field. That’s the lesson to be learned from the BSU team.

  24. koakane iPhone October 23, 2009 6:37 am

Chartered trips: The only way the Boise State football team flies

    http://www.idahostatesman.com/sports/story/946192.html

    From the article:

Ironically, Hawaii moved the start time of its WAC home games up one hour this season to enable teams that fly commercial to catch a red-eye flight after the game. That happened after Boise State had made its decision.

It’s too bad that somebody couldn’t petition to have the time moved back to 600 pm for this game.

It’s also too bad the other side couldn’t have been good sports and say that since the 600 pm start time isn’t a burden on them that they wouldn’t have minded if the UH had gone back to the original starting time of the game.

  37. Slugger October 23, 2009 7:36 am

  55. madeinhawaii October 23, 2009 9:38 am

If our Warriors could shower in the lockers after a late game on the road and then go directly to the chartered plane and sleep on board until it is allowed to take off, a chartered plane might work. Gotta save on that last hotel stay after the game to make it feasible.

  56. chopsueyboy October 23, 2009 9:39 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!
Boise State charter flight will be like a privately held funeral service
after we beat them saturday night.
    GO WARRIORS!

  57. madeinhawaii October 23, 2009 9:44 am

    bighilofan2:

My take is that, along with all the injuries, our defensive players still haven’t mastered their positions. That’s why guys are constantly being moved to try to minimize their inexperience and maximize their ability to stop the other team. Apparently we have the same coaches on Defense that we did in 1999 and 2007.

Offensively, the loss of Malcolm, Greg and now Bradley really impacted our Offense. Moniz is handling the job admirably, but the ‘connect’ between Moniz and the receivers are just a half-click off in key situations. That can only be fixed with more game time and repetition. Maybe they’ll ‘click’ tomorrow night. It’s not impossible! Gotta Believe.

  58. A-House October 23, 2009 9:52 am

Reviewing the boise St travel roster in the morning paper, I count only 5 seniors and NONE are on the O or Dline.

In fact, all the “trench” players are sophmores or freshmen and they have been pushing other teams around for the first 6 games. That’s awesome.

Watching the Tulsa game, Bosie State’s Dline had a fantistic push against the Oline. The left end was especially good in pushing the R tackle back 4-5 yards on nearly every play.

This now begs the question, if Boise State has such good players, why is it that few, if any, are drafted by the NFL? Is it like a Bobby Knight at Indiana where he gets so much out of his players that scouts say they have very little or none left for the NBA?

  59. A-House October 23, 2009 9:55 am

Wow, ST, that’s a really nice picture of LizK, Kmry and “i don’t know” the other person.

Yea, for Kauai for stepping up to support the Warriors.

Hey, hey, BHF2, can you top that? oh, I forgot you just got a new case and working hard before flying to Oahu tomorrow.

  60. A-House October 23, 2009 9:57 am

Of course, bighilofan2 will surpass that with his photo next to the “bike”.

Thanks to all the “principal” participants who made this happen. Will look for it on the sidelines tomorrow!

  61. 99club October 23, 2009 10:10 am

Good to read the team’s upbeat about this week. UH can beat these guys! I read somewhere that TCU would leap over Boise for the BCS at large if they run the table the rest of the way. TCU plays BYU this week.

    Happy belated B-day A-house!

  62. protector October 23, 2009 10:11 am

    A-House,

It IS scary that the Boise State team is very young & yet are playing at an extremely high level. And that staff does seem grossly underpaid for the quality job that they do. All that being said, I think our boyz are gonna “get ‘er done”, as Larry the Cable Guy would say!

As for Boise not having that many draftees, I’ll bet that the Mel Kipers and other over-rated talking heads have saddled that team with the “system” label. That they have a great system but aren’t the type of athletes the pros are looking for. Bunk! Just like they said Colt was a “system” QB. He was a terrific QB that grasped, learned & implemented
    a difficult but explosive system.

  63. madeinhawaii October 23, 2009 10:15 am

    A-house,

Only 5 seniors? Wow… gotta really make it a point to lay some heavy lumber into them tomorrow, then. Gotta instill a healthy dose of fear into them that will sick to their skins and linger with them for the next few years. Whootah!

  64. madeinhawaii October 23, 2009 10:28 am

Hmmm if you look at Boise’s roster, there are only 5 seniors. 19 juniors, 26 sophmores and over 51 freshmen. How do you get so many freshmen? What’s their incentive Do you take some under-performing guys off scholarship and pass them on to the non-scholie freshmen when they become sophmores if they pan out?

  65. (Jesse) James October 23, 2009 10:37 am

Good morning Tsaikos…hope all have a good day…busy busy again today…hope to see everyone at the T-gate tomorrow…

Good morning Tsaikos. Was long day yesternight. Going through the mail this morning and wow, Coach Mc has replied. He assured me that whatever you heard about the LA recruiting is strictly rumors. He and his staff are very actively recruiting in that area and have 3 prospects who like UH and hopefully will sign on next Feb. Coach Lumpkin is a Harbor JC ex-player and maintains his ties with them. Thank you Coach Mc for taking the time to clarify misunderstandings and rumors.

    Pomai,

I think NCAA regulations prohibits a school from profiting off a student athlete’s name and or image.

  87. Garret October 23, 2009 12:02 pm

This high school coach (Brett Ogata) change their logo this year to look a *lot* like UH’s logo. At least they use an “M” instead of an “H”.

Mercer Island changed the Islanders’ logo to look more like that of the University of Hawaii.

  88. Garret October 23, 2009 12:05 pm

The entire UH team checked out their Haunted Lagoon for Halloween.

Now, when the October moon rises over the PCC’s palm trees and trademark lagoon, the park transforms into an expansive spook alley that has become wildly popular, especially with the locals.

“When we decided to do something for Halloween, the response was, ‘Haunted lagoon? Polynesian Cultural Center? How does that work?'” Orgill said.

“The entire (University of Hawaii) football team came. People are coming in groups of 12, 15, 16,” Magalei said.

  89. Garret October 23, 2009 12:07 pm

BSU’s seniors have never won at Aloha Stadium (0-2, including the Hawaii Bowl). With all the talk about how dominant BSU has been, it is good to note that they are only 3-3 at Aloha Stadium!

“We’ve talked about it a lot,” senior fullback Richie Brockel said. “I’ve never won over there, and I don’t enjoy the trip because of that. I’d really like to go over there my senior year and get the ‘W’ and put those emotions to rest.”

Boise State is 3-3 all-time there. With its isolation, hostile crowd and unique weather, Aloha Stadium is anything but a fun trip for opposing players.

“It’s another tough place, with a lot of distractions, not to mention a good team we’re playing against,” Boise State head coach Chris Petersen said.

Salas said the travel can wear on some teams, but said it’s the 12th man — the fans in the stands — that make the biggest difference.

“Hawaiians are prideful people,” he said. “They’re pretty protective of us, so they make it tough on anyone coming in here.”

    A-House:

    Very belated Happy Birthday!

It wasn’t that I was forgetting about you, just haven’t had too much time to peruse the blog lately. I’ve been spending way too much time outside after-hours enjoying the better-than-normal weather. Too bad we go back to seasonal conditions this weekend…..

  91. Garret October 23, 2009 12:09 pm

Kazz is correct, making money off any of the T-shirts that the seniors create would be an NCAA violation.

  92. Garret October 23, 2009 12:12 pm

I remember the debate about whether or not Blaze would have another year–ST and some others thought so but UH appeared to think that this was his last year. Blaze putting out his shirt seems to indicate that this is his last year.

  93. whitey October 23, 2009 12:27 pm

Best wishes to Taz Stevenson. He has verbally committed to UDub, so just want to wish the best. Would have been nice if he came to UH, but it is his and his family choice.

Bike Update and a Great Reason to fly Hawaiian AIr

Bike #1 was put into the hands of Eric and the training staff at 11:25 this morning.

This bike would still be wandering around the country in a delivery truck if George from Hawaiian Air Cargo didn’t coordinate with Yellow Freight, US Airways, and TSA (mountains of paperwork). There was only one company that came through for this project and exemplifies customer service.

i remember that you mentioned the blackberry storm2. i, too, had been following its release date. it was hoped that they were gonna debut the storm2 several months ago. however, the huge inventory of the original storm held up its release.

it appears that it will be released very soon. they no longer are offering me the storm1 for free. my guess is that they well release the storm2 during the world series because blackberry i believe is one of the big sponsors. while at the same time verizon also bought the omnia2 rights.

verizon likes to bring out new stuff around november in time for holiday buys.

    we’ll see.

  109. Derek October 23, 2009 1:33 pm

Boise St. beat Fresno by 17 at Fresno. Fresno St. beat Hawaii by 25 at Hawaii. You tell me. Think the Warriors have a chance? I go back to my original premise. We are very hopeful, but when reality sets in you have to believe your eyes. Over the last 5 weeks the Warriors have gotten progressively worse, mostly on defense. Moniz is improving and the offense is moving the ball….the same problems in the red zone continue to plague this team. We would have to score a touchdown every time we get the ball against Boise St. to even be in the game. And that will not happen as Boise St.’s defense is just too good. The added incentive for Boise to revenge their last loss to the Warriors will keep the Broncos focused. QB Kellen Moore is one of the most efficient passers in all of college football. I also predict that Boise St. will score a touchdown, maybe two on either a kickoff return or punt return by Kyle Wilson. You have to look at trends and our football team’s trends are down, down, down. Like I said, we are hopeful, but……

Hoping UH will the game tomorrow. Here is some food for thought.cheer for BSU after this game because if Boise keeps winning and TCU loses to either Utah or BYU, Boise makes the BCS with a HUGE payday which will help UH financially as UH and the other WAC schools will benefit from a Boise St. appearance in a major BCS bowl game…

Talking Big East vs Mountain West. I think if Boise gets to another BCS this year it wouldn’t surprise me if the MWC takes a long hard look at taking in BSU to their conference. It would add more credibilty to the conference and with the talk of giving MWC a automatic BCS bid it would only support this. If they leave where does that leave the WAC?….

  131. madeinhawaii October 23, 2009 4:01 pm

    Derek,

Yeah, yeah.. heard all that… but Notre Dame was having a dreadful season when they showed up at Hawaii. Then they suddenly cliqued.

Now it’s our turn. Warriors just got to put it all together. Execute as they have been taught. It’s happened before. Not just elsewhere, but here as well. How many times has Hawaii been written off only to surprise the critics?

Thing is, I really believe in our players, our coaches, and as such, I believe in our chances. Winning isn’t determined by the better team, but the team that plays the better game at the time of competition. That could be any side.

    Warriors IMUA!!!!

  132. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 23, 2009 4:20 pm

I dont buy Coach Peterson saying he doesn’t think about running up the score etc. With TCU playing a very good BYU team (ranked) and media talking about TCU leapfrogging Boise if they beat BYU, I think Coach Peterson is too smart to not want to run up the score IF given the opportunity. Too much criticisms already about Boise being at 4 for that coach do be paying attention.

They need convincing routs throughout the rest of their schedule and pray that TCU loses one game. If I had a vote and Boise beat us by 7pts and TCU beat BYU @ BYU, and both run the table…who is the logical choice in this ?? TCU imo.

While I know what he says in public is meant to keep the focus on just winning the game, I dont think anyone is buying it and Coach Mack is going to give it all they got.

Given the opportunity, Boise will do what they can not only to win this game, but to turn this game into slaughterhouse with a lot of blood.

So Warriors, dont let down and dont give in. Not In Our House!

  133. madeinhawaii October 23, 2009 4:24 pm

I should have said…Winning isn’t determined by the team with the better record, but the by the team that plays the better game at the time of competition.

I’m just waiting for our Warriors to play the game they are truly capable of.

  134. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 23, 2009 4:24 pm

I think I was talking to Protector about playing more elite teams and he brought up a very good point.

Seeing that our team over the past few years tend to be very injury prone, playing the likes of a USC or SEC conference team may prove to be many small disasters.

These teams hit harder, are more physical and stronger than us overall (i.e. nfl quality). One of the big downsides to playing these kinds of teams is our players end up with a lot more injuries and tire out.

I always thought of the upsides but this is a good reason why maybe we shouldnt?

  135. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 23, 2009 4:26 pm

    madeinhawaii,

“we dont gotta be the best team in the country, we just gotta show up and be the best team in the stadium!”

  137. madeinhawaii October 23, 2009 5:29 pm

    iwonderwhytheyhateme:

I agree. We can play one or two elite teams in a season, separated by the WAC schedule. BUT until we can recruit the same size and caliber of players, we risk injury if we try to keep up with back to back games against such foes. UNLESS, that is, we get to be three deep in every position without significant drop off. But I don’t see that happening anytime soon. We would need 50+ freshmen like Boise to build something like that.

  138. chopsueyboy October 23, 2009 5:34 pm

is watching Monopoly on tv better or worse than
the World Championship of Mah Jong on KIKU tv?

  139. Διογένης ὁ Σινωπεύς October 23, 2009 5:39 pm

IWONDERWHY… If BSU does join the MWC, they may add something to that Conference but they probably will not rise to the top as often as they did in the WAC. Remember there is BYU, TCU, UTAH etc and their TV package may not be as good. I suppose they will be perennial host in the Humanitarian Bowl but not in any of the majors as the competition would be a heck lot better..

The grass may not be as green as it looks.

  140. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 23, 2009 6:19 pm

    Διογένης ὁ Σινωπεύς ,

I think the TV package is a lot better with the MWC…as they have the “Mountain West Sports Network + CBS” plus they do have occasional ESPN games televised.

They may or may not rise to the top of the conference as much as the WAC but if the MWC decides to take in Boise St. it would make that conference a heck of a lot stronger than something like the Big East.

Also, it wouldnt incur any significant travel experience to the conference members as the school is more or less in the middle of the members home state.

While they wouldn’t make it to the top of the MWC as much, IF the MWC got a automatic BCS berth, I would rather be in that conference and fight every year for auto-bid though conference championship than having to face scrutiny and uncertainty even if you were to go undefeated in the WAC.

I think Boise St. sees the WAC as just a step towards something bigger…the MWC…unless the Big-12 wants to kick out Baylor or something, which i doubt will happen.

  141. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 23, 2009 6:25 pm

    addition to #140,

The main thing I wanted to get peoples opinions on is what would the WAC be without Boise St.?

I think its reasonable to say that Boise’s win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta brought enough interest in the WAC to allow Hawaii’s 2007 rise to #10.

So without them….what’s in store for our perception as a competitive conference and are we able to maintain the respect for our conference (no matter how little that may be) with them gone?

  142. Garret October 23, 2009 6:27 pm

If the MWC becomes a BCS conference, Ferd detailed how the conference will get $24 million instead of the $5 million the WAC gets in BCS money (when no team makes the BCS). That is about $2 million per year more. So, if BSU doesn’t make a BCS bowl more than every other year in the WAC, they would come out ahead in a BCS conference even if they never play in a BCS bowl again.

I do not think that *any* team would choose to stay in a non-BCS conference if they had a chance to join a BCS conference. UH would jump at the chance, and I understand BSU looking out for themselves.

  143. Garret October 23, 2009 6:30 pm

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

If the WAC loses BSU, the WAC loses a lot of national prestige and the next TV contract will be brutal. Plus, the WAC could cease to exist if they lose another team or two and several WAC teams haveserious budget and attendance problems (NMSU and Utah State first come to mind, but also SJSU).

  144. Garret October 23, 2009 6:31 pm

Feature on Kealoha Pilares, mostly focusing on his tattoos.

Kealoha Pilares is one of the top play makers on the University of Hawaii football team, but, it’s not just his play that makes him stand out. Among other things, he also has a lot of tattoos.

However, the one that means the most to him, is the one fans have probably never seen. Underneath his right wristband is a date – 10-01-08. It’s the day Kealoha Pilares lost a beloved member of his family.

“My Grandma passed away last year, and this is something special to me,” said Pilares.

  146. Garret October 23, 2009 6:35 pm

Q&A with Zane Johnson, basketball transfer from Arizona.

DW: Were you looking at any other schools to transfer to?

ZJ: New Mexico and here were the final two schools I was looking to go to. Hawaii coaches are down to earth; they rarely yell. It’s just fun. It’s like last year with coach (Russ) Pennell and coach (Mike) Dunlap.

DW: How has it been going from your favorite teammates ever to playing with a bunch of guys you don’t know yet?

ZJ: It’s going to be different. I had three NBA guys on my team last year. Here, I probably don’t have any. There’s one guy here that’s really good who reminds me of Nic Wise. His name is Dwain Williams, a transfer from Providence. But I don’t think there will be anything like I experienced last year. Playing with them was just so much fun. Playing here will be fun, but it will be hard to click just like we all did last year.

DW: How is head coach Bob Nash similar or different to the past two coaches you played for?

ZJ: He’s like coach Pennell. He cares about you, he wants you to do good. He’s a good coach who knows what he’s doing, and above all, he’s a great person.

  147. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 23, 2009 6:37 pm

    #142 Garret,

Great great point. I dont think a single school would choose to NOT to be in a BCS conference.

Thinking about it the other way, if all a school wanted was to be at the top of the conference, Oregon, Cal, UCLA would beg to join the WAC. 5-6 schools from the SEC would disband etc.

Better BCS conference means more money not just from the BCS, but if you become a respected conference with respected schools, you get much more lucrative TV packages along with tons of offers to various bowl games. In the SEC, if you qualify for a bowl game, you almost ALWAYS get to go to one…sometimes with pretty decent payouts.

  148. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 23, 2009 6:41 pm

IF IF IF Hawaii were to be offered a slot in the Pac-10 (which wont happen) and we turned it down because we couldn’t compete w/ SC or Cal…I think there would civil strife and blood in the streets in Manoa.

  149. madeinhawaii October 23, 2009 6:58 pm

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

If we got an invite to the Pac10, you can bet UH would jump at the opportunity. Just being in the BCS would give UH a huge leg up in the recruiting war locally and on the continent. I can think of a number of schools that Hawaii could edge out in recruiting just because we are Hawaii and we are BCS

Here’s a question I wanted to ask you.

Now that JJ has the money, facilities, coaching staff, and great location to recruit from. How long before he gets SMU into a BCS game? How long before he gets them into the top 10?

I can see JJ coming back after McMackin’s decides to step away/down only if he is highly successful at SMU. Otherwise, he’d have little clout for any demands he may have and returning would be moot.

    .

  150. madeinhawaii October 23, 2009 7:00 pm

Thing is, Hawaii would probably need to cough up another 20 million or so into the athletic budget to meet the BCS criteria.

  152. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 23, 2009 7:09 pm

    madeinhawaii,

I say give him 8 years? SMU was the bomb in the past so they have that going for them. A “rebirth” of sorts and bringing the school back into prominence.

I dont know if JJ would come back to coach…he is still young-ish so thats not the problem. I dunno. If Mack is successful how long will he be here? Be another 80 yo paterno haha?….I dont know what he has and what he doesnt have in him. I vaguely remember him saying I want Hawaii to be my last stop or something like that. If that is 5 years or 15 who knows.

  153. Mrs. A-House October 23, 2009 7:09 pm

    UH & PAC-10:

Besides football, UH would bring competitive teams for softball, baseball, volleyball, track, swimming/diving, and sailing to the dining table and, as many discovered, UH fans. Can Boise St do the same?

If BCS schools only look at a “population base”, then it must examine its own member schools as only a few really have this capability ( cities with multi-million people. Did you know that Honolulu is ranked between #12 and 15th for large city in the USA?

How many fans did Utah attract to the Sugar Bowl this past year? How much did the fans spend?

In 1995, we went to the VB National Championship at UCLA and there were more Hawaii fans than UCLA fans at the game. BTW, did you know that the the “premier” seats at Pauley Pavilion is wooden bench seats?

Perhaps the “powers to be” at the BCS conferences count only football as their reason to exist.

  154. A-House October 23, 2009 7:13 pm

sorry, again, I progot to change the name of the “poster” – this is A-House posting!!!

  155. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 23, 2009 7:31 pm

    A-House,

Unfortunately I think you nailed it. Football not only is the mucho bucks…but it also in many instances rakes in the money to subsidize the existence of other sports.

  156. madeinhawaii October 23, 2009 7:35 pm

    # iwonderwhytheyhateme:

McMackin also said he wanted to retire under JJ, remember? So? Who knows. BUT JJ has to succeed first if he is going to return with a list of demands that he wants met.

I would love to see JJ prove his point at SMU and return. It may be the only way to get the people who can make the financial decisions to finally give it a long term shot..

  157. Garret October 23, 2009 7:41 pm

    A-House,

Football and men’s basketball pays for ALL of the other sports, so they really are the only sports that matter to a conference. BSU won the WAC 1 or 2 seasons ago in basketball and have been consistently good in football–baseball, softball, track, etc., do NOT matter at all to a conference’s national respect and monetary position.

In fact, all of the nonrevenue sports are a reason that conferences would *not* want UH. Track, swimming, softball, and so on bring no revenue in and lose so much money for their schools…and having those money-losing teams travel to Hawaii is really expensive for a conference.

  158. Garret October 23, 2009 7:48 pm

    madeinhawaii,

If BSU leaves the WAC and the conference goes downhill, what will the WAC and UH look like in 4 years? Given the state of the finances in Hawaii, where would the money come from for a new stadium and other facility improvements?

JJ has a whole batch of rich donors at SMU that brought him there, one of the richest men in the US who gives a ton (he funded their football stadium so they named it after him, Ford), and he just got T. Boone Pickens to skip Oklahoma State’s homecoming game to go to an SMU game. He got Mrs. Pickens to appoint him the head of her favorite charity and she basically selected the new SMU mascot. I’m guessing that within a year Pickens will donate the money for an indoor practice facility to SMU.

It would take a man like Pickens to get the facilities upgraded at UH because the state isn’t going to have the money to do it. UH doesn’t have an alum like that, unfortunately. And I don’t see anyone at UH who can pull in someone like Pickens.

  159. Garret October 23, 2009 7:53 pm

Things are still pretty low for SMU…based on their past struggles over the years, they were selected to be Houston’s homecoming opponent.

  160. whitey October 23, 2009 7:57 pm

Looking at the thoughts about donors for UH, does UH have any alumni who is listed among the top 500 in financial standing????

  161. whitey October 23, 2009 8:04 pm

If I had kids would I want to send them to UH to further their education??? I don’t know. UH should be looking at this seriously to find out how they can get more students and the whys of why hs students would rather go to school away from Hawaii.

  162. whitey October 23, 2009 8:06 pm

I don’t have figures and just guessing, but does some of the hs in hawaii get more donation from their alumni than UH????

  163. whitey October 23, 2009 8:13 pm

UH athletics is a very good program, but not all at UH support athletics imho. Many of us support UH because of athletics and did not go to school there. Athletics is one of the ways for alumni and friends to be proud of UH.

  164. whitey October 23, 2009 8:22 pm

imho, the weakest link for UH to get more money is right in their backyard, the UH Alumni Association. They should work hard at trying to keep all of their alumnis abreast of what is happening at UH, encourage all of them to join the alumni assn upon graduation, and look at simple marketing things. A simple things like making a yearly school calendar which has school activities information and various pictures of UH and mailing it to all their dues paying alumni would be a great start. Putting out a yearly magazine listing all the various types of donors and giving them recognition is most important, but is this done????

  165. whitey October 23, 2009 8:26 pm

do the easy things first, then work at the more difficult problems is common sense, but when you don’t even do the easy things, it is chaos. if this makes sense, then getting students admitted to UH would be easy, but it appears that it is still a major problem with admittance office.

  166. whitey October 23, 2009 8:27 pm

    ok, enough, going brake.

  167. NYUH October 23, 2009 8:31 pm

UH is an unappreciated jewel. But you can’t blame local kids for wanting what in New Zealand they call their “OE” – overseas experience.

  168. protector October 23, 2009 8:42 pm

    iwonderwhytheyhateme on # 134,

When I made the point about it being problematic when we go againsty the truly elite powerhouses being extremely physical & the high probability of us sustaining more than the usual injuries & dings, I was speaking about out present state of the state. I feel that in 2-3 years, we should be (hopefully) a lot deeper and we should have long since dealt with issues such as clock management, lack of depth at key positions. At that point, Coach Mac probably would WANT the opportunity to play a high profile team on the mainland. Still, I’d like them to cherry-pick the opponents. I am NOT in favor of playing Florida, Alabama,Arkansas or Miami or the kind of teams that are or will be juggernauts. I wouldn’t mind us having another shot at Georgia, though. If we do play high profile tems in th East, it would be a challenge not just physically & in terms of time zones but in cost / expenses also.

  169. el guapo October 23, 2009 8:42 pm

The problem still comes back to academics.

Students have a terrible academic experience here, I know I did. Required classes were taught at the same time and sometimes are only taught every other semester (if you’re lucky). Obviously it takes longer to graduate.

I think if students were treated better they would be much more willing to give back later.

  170. bighilofan2 October 23, 2009 8:44 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos.

    lava,
not Sione Polota, Daniel Iopa, just graduated. his 40 went down to 4.8 and he’s been lifting with a UNLV grad, now a hs coach.

I no kea about da BCS kala. I like you guyz buss up Boise!

  171. NYUH October 23, 2009 8:49 pm

    el guapo

that happens all universities all over the country.

  172. badayu October 23, 2009 8:51 pm

everybody seems to have forgotten chris leatigaga #91, is he still injured or what?

  173. whitey October 23, 2009 8:52 pm

el gaupo, bingo!!!! the amount of classes offered each semester at UH has been a long running problem and that problem will not change till UH decides that it is time the school caters to the students and not the faculty. they are so behind time as to how to organize classes ahead of time, it seems like they don’t care.

  174. bighilofan2 October 23, 2009 8:53 pm

    el guapo

you getting too serious for me tonight.

I’m trying to just mellow out, cuz my vicarious experience, through the tales of others, is the same as yours.

but at the same time, if neva have UH grad schools, plenny local peeps would not be lawyers and doctors. a nephew just became a doctor, so I get mixed feelings, because personally i had a great experience at UH and am thankful beyond words.

  175. whitey October 23, 2009 8:54 pm

NYUH, no, that does not happen to schools who have organization. Went away to school and not once was a class not available during each quarter. Quarter!!!!!!! 3 qtrs to a school year. I was able to graduate in 4 yrs.

  176. bighilofan2 October 23, 2009 8:55 pm

    okay,

time out. get sum beauty rest 😀

tomorrow is a big day and i wanna enjoy
it, save my vocals fo da game.

    nite gang!

    and Go Warriors!

  177. whitey October 23, 2009 8:56 pm

bhf2, i don’t think that what el gaupo and I are talking about. we are talking about basic underclassmen classes which if given each semester, many would be able to graduate in 4 yrs. professional school is different horse.

  178. bighilofan2 October 23, 2009 9:02 pm

    i no wat you mean.

my experience was New Hampshire. graduated 3 1/2 yrs because
school full time year round, and the school helped me, put 15 credit hours in the last semester, all the class times revolved around me, not the professors. had to plan it out for a year though.

I no for a fact UH don’t do that. I tried to go back to school last year, remember, take one class so i could get student seating at Aloha Stadium. da goal was to get a student ID. and not one person behind da desk said to me “i’ll help you be a student again.” all day wuz interested in waz ordering da right bento before the other worker stole da betta meal selection.

Yup, UH gotta lotta prolems. 😀

    and thats no joke.

but still, its my school. and is the home of my team.

    Go Warriors.

  179. Garret October 23, 2009 9:06 pm

    badayu,

Chris Leatigaga could be a BIG help to the Warriors this season! Unfortunately, he’s been hurt all season. However, this week he was able to start practicing again, so he may play against BSU or at least be able to help out very soon.

  180. Garret October 23, 2009 9:07 pm

Don’t forget that the budget problems for the state resulted in UH getting a big cut in funding this year…and I’m guessing next year will be even worse due to the decline in tourism. Many classes required to graduate will NOT be offered, and UH students are very upset at the situation right now. Those are the same students UH will be asking for money from after they graduate.

  181. OldDiver October 23, 2009 9:11 pm

    Regarding # 161

Being and OldDiver I have met many people during my time, UH educated, mainland university educated and honestly I can’t really tell the difference between the two. I find many fine people have graduated from here and the mainland and have met many donkeys as well. Furthering one’s education is a good thing for society, and putting down UH really serves no purpose other than to justify sending your child away. Not everyone can afford to go away, please don’t put them down.

  182. whitey October 23, 2009 9:18 pm

olddiver, I don’t think any of us is putting UH down, but there are academic problems which has never been corrected over years. We all want UH to be academically the best and be recognized as a world class school of academia. There are many reason for why students go away, but how can we encourage more to stay at home. Not too long ago, UH had one of the best schools of education and produced almost all of the teachers for our education system. Do they still do that??? I don’t think so, otherwise we would not be having a problem with hiring teachers.

  183. Garret October 23, 2009 9:19 pm

Stanford had a *very* nice system where there were a zillion classes and you got to customize your degree with your academic advisor. And if you wanted to take 2 classes that were at the same time, you could. *All* classes I took, you actually didn’t have to worry about a spot in the class…you just went to a bunch of classes in the first week and then filled out your registration card after the first week when you selected what classes you wanted.

The classes you couldn’t attend were taped and available in the library. I could go to the library at anytime, get the tape and watch it on one of the 20+ TVs set up in the library for that. I could rewind to listen to something over. My friends who lived in the dorms could just tape the lectures on their TV…for morning classes they would just program their VCR to the channel and time of the lecture and not have to worry about missing the class. There was even a 2-way feature set up so that you could call in a question and the AV person could patch the call through so that the professor and everyone in the classroom could hear your question, and the professor would answer your question that way. All the lecture notes were passed out in advance, so you could follow along and not have to write frantically to keep up with the lecturer.

My second quarter at Stanford I took 3 classes that were offered on Tue/Thurs from 9:30am – 10:50 am, and 2 classes that were offered from 11 am – 12:20pm. Five classes in 2 time slots and I got to see every lecture.

So, you got every class you wanted, had all the notes for every class, could watch the lecture over by just walking to the library, could tape the lectures in the dorm, and the TAs were all excellent because the competition was fierce for those positions.

And even with all of that, I still think that Texas taught better than Stanford. They didn’t have that TV setup, but the education quality was better in my opinion. The classes at both schools were better than the 2 graduate classes that I took at USC, though USC’s TV setup was nice because I got to watch the lectures during (paid) work time at JPL.

  184. Garret October 23, 2009 9:25 pm

I agree that UH can provide an excellent education, and I know a LOT of UH graduates that have done extremely well. I don’t think that there is any WAC school that I would put above UH academically, and UH does well in a lot of areas. I just worry about the morale of the professors and students at UH when they feel the budget squeezed a little more each year and the list of facilities that are behind in maintenance grows.

Last year a UH prof talked with me for a long time about his list of complaints and #1 was the state of the classrooms, labs, and dorms. We complain about the athletic facilities in this blog because we are sports fans, but the academic facilities really need money for maintenance and repairs also.

  185. whitey October 23, 2009 9:28 pm

On the other side of the coin, maybe it was not good that so many went away to school cause we lost many school customs and traditions because these who returned changed the landscape. I blame myself for coming back with different thinking and forgot my upbringing, but after coming home and working here, old tradition and customs became very important because this is what Hawaii is all about.

  186. Garret October 23, 2009 9:33 pm

Changing the subject, I think it was a big *coincidence* (sarcasm) that the legislator who pushed for the law exempting football stadiums from environmental regulations in California just happened to be a guest of the owner of the San Diego Chargers at their last game. The owner of the Chargers made a big donation to a cause that the legislator supports (voter registration and turnout, especially in that legislator’s district) that coincidentally occurred a few days before the bill was passed.

Is it a coincidence that the owner of the Chargers is helping get the football stadium built in the City of Industry? Sure…

  187. lava October 23, 2009 9:41 pm

  191. lava October 23, 2009 9:50 pm

The members of the WAC will be less relevant if Hawaii is in the Big Sky. I’m not advocating the move, but it should be explored because we are increasingly going to get pulled in that direction unless we fight hard to avoid it, and I’m not clear we should avoid it. Think about it. We dump the Aloha Stadium, build something closer to campus with less seating since so many subscribe to the cable package (which UH supported), the coaches get less money, the State’s best players still leave the state to play for the mainland but the guys who remain are more competitive (and Hawaii loves a winner), and every year we schedule a PAC-10 opponent as our super bowl. It may be a natural fit in basketball too, since so many island boys are under 6′.

As John Fink loves to say, think about it.

    I love my pups

No one appreciates the very special genius of your conversation as the dog does.
I hope to be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.
Don’t accept your dog’s admiration as conclusive evidence that you are wonderful.
We wonder why the dogs always drink out of our toilets, but look at it from their point of view: Why do humans keep peeing into their water bowls?

    protector,

yes i agree that eventually we could take on some lower level “elite” schools. even in the SEC I can see a time when we could play Vandy or OleMiss.

I still think that for the most part we will be hard pressed to recruit the players that are necessary to compete with a Florida or LSU. This is not to say I wouldnt want to see them play these teams because the draw in these types of matchups is not only watching UH but watching UH play a high profile team.

If some of these teams were more open to a home-home, can you imagine how many people would go to Aloha Stadium to watch a UH-LSU or UH-Oklahoma matchup?….Even if they were to raise the prices of the tickets I can see a spike in the number of people attending.

  197. whitey October 23, 2009 9:58 pm

If the NCAA considers our Community Colleges part of the UH and starts their athletic clock as soon as they enroll full time, then why can’t the student enrolled at the CC play on the UH team? Often a player might need only one or two semesters of coursework to become UH Manoa qualified.

Just got back from the vb game. Nice to see everyone (LizK, Slugger, HiFlyer, Kazz, 808ike, chawan, sj, myki, SailorBlue & wife). The alumnae game was fun to watch. da nfa played, sorta. btw, c_c made the balloon hats tonight, regular guy is on vacation.

Have fun tomorrow at the t-gate.

iwonderwhytheyhateme: Oklahoma might be too much to handle though it and Nebraska used to bring fans galore to Hawaii and the merchants in Waikiki were smiling broadly. Stanford would be good just to bring the “fans” out – Stanford having a big alumni base here, as does UWash and the Oregons. Problem is that we might not get many Mainland fans from those schools

funny moment tonight at the end of the uh-byuh vb exhibition match.

so, they are inviting the distinguished guests to speak at the ssc in honoring dave shoji.

the wac commisioner is introduced to the audience by ben kiiaina as DAVE benson. needless to say, it was embarassing and benson looked a bit perturbed. later, ben corrects his mistake. hahaha.
