On the nose

Penitito Faalologo is on the move again.

Faalologo, who was raised in American Samoa, was recruited as a linebacker. He was used there briefly before moving to defensive end. While redshirting as a freshman last fall and during the past spring training, he was at fullback and H-back.

This offseason, Faalologo has been training with the intent of playing nose tackle in training camp. Faalologo appears to have the tools to be a point defender — strength, compact build and, in football parlance, a good “motor.”

With the Warriors expected to go with wider sets on offense — and, of course, Joey Iosefa as the featured back —Faalologo probably will be more useful on defense.

Moses Samia is listed as the No. 1 nose tackle on the post-spring depth chart. Marcus Malepeai is No. 2. Calen Friel also can be used at nose tackle.

  3. Shoko June 21, 2014 4:59 am

Penitito seems a little light for that position. His roster weight is listed as 250 pounds.

Fangupo is at Cerritos College. He played at the nose tackle position this past this spring.

  7. Shoko June 21, 2014 6:21 am

Correction, Fangupo is projected to play nose tackle.

TGIS…Good Saturday Morning to all posters and lurkers. Now got to peek at Tsai’s tweets.

  12. Stephen Tsai June 21, 2014 9:03 am

    Two words: Delmar Johnson.

  13. Stephen Tsai June 21, 2014 9:03 am

    Two more words: Lance Samuseva

  14. C-Pop June 21, 2014 9:39 am

Should not be problem for Penitito to gain good weight if it’s part of strength, position coaches plan. Shorter NG’s must be quick, powerful, tough, and relentless. Movements along the line of scrimmage usually big part of smaller NG’s.

  15. SteveM June 21, 2014 10:43 am

    Good morning everyone!

A beautiful, long day in Hawaii — it’s summer solstice!

  16. isleboy June 21, 2014 11:15 am

Penitito was the best running back during spring final game. Why move him?
Chances are Joey will get hurt and no one in present depth chart can run
with power like Penitito. Desperation move to shore up the defense…..

  17. Papakolei-n June 21, 2014 11:23 am

ST, 2 more words Mike Lafaele!

  18. Stephen Tsai June 21, 2014 11:40 am

I think many believe Daniel Lewis could transition into a running back, if needed.

  19. Kapahulu June 21, 2014 11:44 am

    #16,
I was also looking forward to watching Penitito in the Backfield. Just the thought of him blocking for Iosefa and Lakalaka and Diocemy was already bringing a smile to my face.
His power on goal line situations was greatly needed. We found out the hard way that Joey was not the Goal Line answer on every play. Need to mix it up. Best of luck to Penitito.
I thought we were already 3 deep at Nose Tackle!

  20. al June 21, 2014 12:06 pm

    golf’s such a fragile game.

  21. Rodney June 21, 2014 12:07 pm

Be perfect goal line jumbo package!

  22. al June 21, 2014 12:08 pm

chris cole would have been another two words had injuries not be his biggest opponent.

  23. Shoko June 21, 2014 12:10 pm

Well, this is Chow’s team and he will do as he sees fit. But, a NT that weighs 250 isn’t exactly a space eater in the 3-4.

  24. Stephen Tsai June 21, 2014 12:18 pm

I don’t know what he weighs but I heard he gained 20 pounds .

  25. Shoko June 21, 2014 12:40 pm

It doesn’t sound like he has trouble gaining weight. But, I think its going to take some time to put on some “good” weight where it doesn’t affect his mobility. Probably needs to reach 290 pounds if that’s possible.

Could have sworn the reason why he moved was because Chow wanted to try and get him on the field quicker, which was the same reason he moved Unga from TE to DL.

  26. turfwar June 21, 2014 12:45 pm

Itai Sataua and Niko would be very bit as good today and I doubt they tipped 250. And yes they played in a three man front.

  27. gobows June 21, 2014 12:59 pm

Samuseva was the key peg on a very good defense…nobody ran up the gut.

  28. gobows June 21, 2014 1:09 pm

    25
That might not be necessary…very few 300 pound athletic linemen playing guard or center in college. Quicks and a good punch can cause havoc.

  29. Shoko June 21, 2014 1:09 pm

Okay, Itai and Niko are good examples. If Penetito plays like them that would be exciting to watch. Don’t see too many players now days that played like them.

  30. 808bowler June 21, 2014 1:13 pm

Watching Shane Austin play arena football. Not bad so far.

  31. 808bowler June 21, 2014 1:16 pm

5 to in 1st half. Last week he threw 8 in the 1st half

  32. 808bowler June 21, 2014 1:17 pm

    Ment 5td

  33. C-Pop June 21, 2014 2:49 pm

Niko was the ultimate athlete & player evidenced by his transition college DL to NFL starting LB with Cardinals. Itai was quick, tough, and the ultimate technician-smart heady player.

  34. Warrior Dave June 21, 2014 3:16 pm

Congrats Shane! Threw the game winning TD with 2 secs, down by 5. Think he had 10 or 11 TD’s today for a come from behind victory.

  35. Da Punchbowl Kid June 21, 2014 5:37 pm

    Howzeet Gangeez! 😉

#34 – Saw that game too! Good for Shane – he’s definitely got it going on in Arena Ball. Is he “tall enough for the NFL?” He took charge of the game today.

  36. Da Punchbowl Kid June 21, 2014 5:41 pm

Agree with other posters about Penitito in the spring game. Great power – often moving the whole pile 2 to 3 yards all on his own.

That kind of power makes me think he’d also be a great nose guard for depth or on different defensive alignments. That said, I hope they do give him reps at RB as well – he WOULD be a great blocker or ball carrier, particularly in power situations.

  37. Boolakanaka June 21, 2014 5:41 pm

C-pop, you got that right. Sort of unfair to place anyone’s name in same sentence as niko. For the newer generation of folks, it may seem we are embellishing superman feats on his athletic ability, but I saw him up close over a 6-7 year period. Once saw him at a track meet win the shot, and then run in the finals of the 100– a race in which mike akiu was the eventual winner–but Niko was not too far behind. You need to remember was a consistent 4.3 guy– but niko was a pure freak athletically.

  38. Da Punchbowl Kid June 21, 2014 5:43 pm

Hey boola! Yep – Niko had much than his share of quick twitch and power.

  39. Boolakanaka June 21, 2014 6:03 pm

DPK–howzit!!? Yup-while niko was the more explosive athlete between him and Al, Al was a much more symmetrical athlete as applied to football–very smooth, without losing strength and power.

  40. kapakahi June 21, 2014 7:49 pm

JMHO but would like to see UH recruit some more all-around athletes from American Samoa……like Joey & Penitito.

  41. Chopsueyboy June 21, 2014 9:00 pm

Shane Austin now on CBS SPORTS NETWORK
    4th quarter

  42. NorthShoreFan June 22, 2014 7:45 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

met Shane after a bowl game in which he threw a int. for a td after the db hurdled over him. He was laughing at his play and took things for what it was.
I’m 5’10…maybe 5’93/4 now but I stood eye to eye with him. He has a great family and support system.
A great young man. Wish the best for him and his family.
