Pardon the interruption

Gov. Abercrombie made an unexpected appearance at today’s Pro Bow news conference, essentially issuing an apology for comments he made about the NFL all-star game several months ago.

Ferd Lewis will have a full report.

* * * * *

The Warriors yesterday began the offseason conditioning program with sessions focusing on weight-training and cardio activities.

The program will run through the March 17 start of spring practice.

Most of the Warriors had been training on their own for a while. For instance, offensive lineman Chauncy Winchester-Makainai, who was riding a bicycle, has trimmed down considerably. And it appears receiver Corey Paclebar has gained much-needed weight.

Whoops.

Belated birthday wishes to Jeannie Lee.

Aloha Tsaikos! Just wanted to share that Pono committed this weekend to play football for Eastern Illinois. They are a FCS school in the Ohio Valley Conference. New HC Dino Babers, Hawaii Born, former UH player, former UCLA/Baylor Coach, most recently coached Baylors WRs in the bowl game w Heisman winner RGIII.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOg0fszwZQA

Pono is very excited! He says the school was super nice, the coaches are going to be fun to play for and are really ‘into it’, and the team is very tight which he liked A LOT! Already getting congrats from some of you on FB! Mahalo!!! Thx to Doris @ PIAA, Al, Pride, PBK, Liz, D1, Ron Mizutani, James Millwood, Joe Onosai, Destiny Church Ohana, et al (don’t want to forget anyone) who have been so supportive!

More Hawaii connections – EIU new DC is Kim McCloud. I’ll let one of you guys write in and say who he is. Sorta make this like a little trivia game.

More trivia – UH played EIU twice in recent memory. What years?

One of my many resolutions for this year is to lose weight and be in better condition. Unfortunately, I don’t have the body or age of a twenty year old…it is a long term project.

    Go Warriors!

  10. Ipu Man January 24, 2012 8:26 am

Annoddah Dave, I lost ten pounds and kept it off just by

not drinking coca-cola, etc, even diet ones, except once

a week with my whopper and french fries. Also, it helps

if you eat oatmeal and brown rice and make your lunch

your main meal, and just snack at dinner, like a sardine/

ginger/seaweed salad or just an apple. But snack away

    on cashews or sumptin…:)

Hi, all. Been off the blog recently as my dad unexpectedly passed away just before Christmas. Things are starting to get better although my mom is still adjusting to things. Understandable, I guess, since they were married 62 years.

Exciting LOI day coming up. Dad would have loved it. I think he would have been very excited about the direction Coach Chow is taking the program. Anyway, just stopping by to say “hi”.

    Annoddah Dave:

Got it backwards… first you gotta get in better shape to lose some weight.

Like IPU man says… just cut out all the canned and instant drinks. If it says “corn syrup” somewhere on the label… don’t partake. That alone made me lose three inches off my weight in less than 4 months. After that, puff puff.. it takes exercise… puff puff… and quit smoking if you do smoke.

  22. madeinhawaii January 24, 2012 9:07 am

Oh yeah.. for snacks, I eat a couple handfuls of unsalted mixed nuts each day that I buy at longs or ebay (5lbs at a time). A good snack that helps keep the hunger pangs away. Haven’t gained an ounce doing that. Don’t let the calories on the label fool you.. unless you turn them into a paste, your body won’t absorb more than half the calories in mixed nuts. Another good snack is that kettle popcorn in the white bag that they sell in Longs. Very lightly sugared… low cal 170 cal for 1/4 bag… surprisingly tasty…

  23. madeinhawaii January 24, 2012 9:07 am

Good morning world! Whoo hoo.. nice and sunny!… good day for recruiting! Go WARRIORS!

  28. Ipu Man January 24, 2012 9:18 am

    warriormojo…GBU and your Mom…

Tom Mui, get Ginger in a little plastic jar at Walmarts or

Don Quijote, red or pink, both are oishii. They pop a salad.

As for sea weed, I use the dry wakame, which you soak first

to make it soft. And just cut your lettuce, cucumber and

whatevah and mix all together and top with your favorite

dressing (oil and vinegar works great).

  29. Ipu Man January 24, 2012 9:19 am

Nalani and all Tsaikos with same loss, GBU…

Soon we all gonna see them again.

  30. A.M. January 24, 2012 9:21 am

I believe Coach Chow employs the “H back” – a cross between FB & TE. He’ll line up on the line, off the line, in the backfield or go in motion. Personnel who played either the traditional FB or TE position can suit this role. Recruiting TEs (vice typical FB) for this position may be preferable due to the size (height/weight) factor.

  31. papajoe2 January 24, 2012 9:29 am

WarriorMojo, I too would like to express my sincerest condolences to you and your ohana. May God bless you and your ohana.

  32. bigislandkurt January 24, 2012 9:34 am

Chauncy had been trimming down and getting in better and better shape as the years have progressed since high school. Just how much has he trimmed down this time? It seems more and more like Chow wants them big boys….big. Not sloppy big….but BCS-kine big.

    BIK

  33. urbankid January 24, 2012 9:37 am

WarriorMojo & Nalani ~ I want to add my sincere condolences to you and your respective ohana for the passing of your loved ones. As you know, it is still a day-to-day health care issue with me and my Pops. He remains physically strong but mentally challenged.

We can all cherish those memories of participating in and watching sports with our Dad’s. May they rest in eternal peace.

    Mai poina.

  46. d1shima January 24, 2012 10:11 am

I have been as culpable as anyone in the past on this one and this will be the only comment I will make on this subject.

Hawaii adopted “Warriors” as its team nickname or part of its nickname for various teams awhile ago. At that time, late 90’s, it seemed pretty cool and a good way to rally support by building excitement through varied imagery.

In the years since 2001 I think my feelings about “calls to battle”; “preparing for war”; “get a warrior mentality” and the like have led me to do more and more cringing as they years have gone by.

There are many Tsaikos who have been in the position of serving our country and have faced such circumstances in a real way and not having been one of them I do not know exactly what the experience is like nor do I wish ever wish to.

But with the changing way that wars are now being reported and brought into the living rooms and also the glimpses that are seen of those who have returned recently with horrific scars I think, for me, there’s a really large gap between reality and rhetoric.

  47. koakane January 24, 2012 10:14 am

Since nobody has posted yet, it looks like long snapper Grant Meersand will be a preferred walk on to UH this coming season. Since Luke Ingram will be a senior, gonna need a LS for the future

    Agreed.

  50. Old School Dave January 24, 2012 10:17 am

Off-season workouts: I wonder if the S & C staff will have those large trash cans strategically positioned at spots around where conditioning drills will take place? Seems to scare the players or at least get their attention.

My condolences for your loss. You, too, Nalani. I lost both of mine three years ago. While, the years have helped temper the loss, I’m glad, though, that the fondest of memories remain.

  56. Garret January 24, 2012 10:30 am

It is good that UH has the last recruiting visit for so many key recruits. Going first is nice if you can prevent the recruit from taking any other visits, but it has been increasingly evident that recruits are willing to flip from even supposedly strong commitments if you can get them to visit your school. The latest example is from a former Warrior recruit who was “99.9%” committed to Portland State but switched to Montana after visiting them.

Henderson, a 2011 graduate from Skyview High School, signed last year with Hawaii. After a gray-shirt season, he opted to leave Hawaii and look elsewhere for his college plans.

Earlier this month, he reported to The Columbian that he had intended to sign with Portland State.

He had arranged a visit to Montana prior to telling Portland State he would sign with the Vikings.

“I was 99.99 percent sure I wanted to go to Portland State. At the same time, I wanted to make sure I checked out Montana,” he explained.

    http://www.columbian.com/news/2012/jan/23/henderson-changes-mind-going-to-univ-of-montana/

  57. d1shima January 24, 2012 10:37 am

    related to “going last”

I was wondering about the strategy choices regarding NFL playoffs OT rules that have gone into effect this season.

Convention in CFB has been to go second but was tryna think about the advantage of doing the same in the NFL.

    Thoughts?

    51 d1shima,

If you elect to go on defense first in the NFL and the opposing team scores a touchdown, the game is over. In college you still have a turn to score a touchdown.

I may have misread your question.

  67. mikey January 24, 2012 11:06 am

College coaching salaries are awe inspiring. UW new DC to get $750,000 this year. OC will “only” get $375,000. Head recruiter/DL coach (the guy who jumped off Cal’s ship) to get $350,000. HC reportedly earns 2.4 mil. (I hope our poor ol team meets the Huskies sometime soon & beat em good.)

The rector scale would measure the impact of an academic administrator, most typically of the European persuasion. I don’t even want to think what 6.0 on a rectum scale would mean. 6.0 on the Richter scale is strong, but barely Tsaiko strong.

  86. Nalani January 24, 2012 12:15 pm

DPK #59, EIU played UH twice during the JJ era. I’m hoping they will schedule a game in the next few years. That would be awesome.

    some more, for comparison …

    Prince Fielder – nine-year, $$$ 214 million.

The Detroit Tigers stunned the baseball world Tuesday by reaching agreement with Prince Fielder on a nine-year, $214 million contract, the fourth-largest deal in baseball history.

The deal was first reported by Yahoo Sports.

  95. Not an Expert January 24, 2012 1:13 pm

College football and basketball, has it reached critical mass? (BUBBLE) Money being flased by the networks will it stop and level off or will it continue to rise? Will people get tired of watching all those games on the tube and start losing interest? A connected question cause if prople get tired of watching than sponsership (money) will wane. Another thing that can happen is the sponsors not willing to dish out that type of money due to changing landscapes of where technology leads the human race. Somehow can UH ever get into the equation financially? Some say cannot some say can and if they could, winning and becoming a top 10 team yearly may get us there.

  96. Shadow January 24, 2012 1:15 pm

Please excuse – my fat fingers missed the “who” between “those” and “recently” in #94.

OK, very bizarre news conference today. Ferd Lewis will be providing a report.

    Is it UH football related?

  105. Stephen Tsai January 24, 2012 1:36 pm

Guv-related. He apologized to the Pro Bowl folks. Sort of.

It was one of those things where a married man would consider it to be an apology but a married woman wouldn’t. Fellas, you know what I’m talking about.

Oh jeeze.. I didn’t think my elbow would be in your way. Jeeze, I’m so sorry, you had to walk into it, honey.

  110. Shadow January 24, 2012 1:46 pm

I give our high school & youth coaches so much credit & appreciation for all their work. They get peanuts compared to what the pro/college coaches get.

But they provide the foundation for those coaches & work unselfishly at the expense of their own families’ time to help our kids.

  111. Couch potato January 24, 2012 1:48 pm

alrighty then mr. gov. so now you need the pro bowl since civil unions isn’t bringing in the big bucks like you said it would, remember? oh, and maybe one day with all the contacts you made during apec, we can see a huge growth in our business economy.

can’t wait to see the improved facilities, under your guidance, at lower campus.

    much mahalo!

  118. ai-eee-soos January 24, 2012 2:29 pm

here’s ferd’s blurb on gov’s remarks. … ST – delete if not supposed to cutnpaste …

” Gov. Neil Abercrombie made a surprise entrance during a Pro Bowl press conference today and declared, “we would like to continue to have (the Pro Bowl) and we’re going to do everything we can to make sure that that comes about in a fashion that will make everybody very, very happy.”

The comments were in contrast to statements last year in which he questioned the state paying $4 million per year to keep the game here.

The Governor’s comments today came shortly after an NFL official had told the gathering “we were aware of the comments of the governor recently.”

The Pro Bowl that will be played Sunday at Aloha Stadium is the 32nd and last one currently under contract to the state. Negotiations have been on-going for future games.

A Hawaii Tourism Authority spokesman said he did not expect an announcement this week.

Asked if the 2013 or ’14 game could be held here, Abercrombie said, “we’re gonna certainly do everything we can to make sure that happens. We’ be delighted if they did.”

Abercrombie termed the state’s relationship with the NFL “excellent.” … “

If Aiona was governor, this mess wouldn’t of happened.

  122. cheepono January 24, 2012 2:41 pm

hmmm details on recruits that will be resolved after this weekend? i take that to mean if some guys don’t commit this weekend, then the guys that visited last weekend are next in line.

There are details on others that will be resolved after this weekend.

Eastern Illinois—-Charleston IL to be more exact….about 45 minutes south of University of Illinois…..Tony Romo….small nice school. My son played there and I was a trivia question when EIU played UH….I played at UH and he played there…..Warriors roughed up the panthers….his teamates told me “those guys did not look human” he was referring to there size and toughness….they were glad when the game ended. Of course I was proud—-GO WARRIORS

  125. kev-1 January 24, 2012 3:06 pm

$214 Million for a baseball contract to a player who is at the end of his prime? What kind of message does that send to society in the economic state that we are in? Sometimes I am so puzzled by the way the world operates.

Wish I were a professional athlete I guess, because my four years of college education and OVER 40 hour work week gets me SHI_ in this world.

WarriorMojo, saddened to hear about your dad’s passing. Take care of Mom and your entire family is in our prayers.

I saw ST from the back of the room at the Pro Bowl presser; wish I could’ve stayed longer…but that was quite interesting today.

YES, we can hardly wait until National Letter of Intent Day next week. Did you hear Na Koa is putting on a dinner reception at Willows that evening with Coach Chow and his staff? In case anyone’s interested, here’s the link: http://nakoa.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/2012-LetterIntent_Reg_rr.pdf. Obviously, it’s not going to fit everyone’s budgets, BUT we all know that many, many Tsaikos do support the UH Warrior Football program through Na Koa, so thank you!!!

  130. bigislandkurt January 24, 2012 3:21 pm

So what, you guys think we got a ONE and DONE Governor?

I wonder if the old man will ever learn how not to stuff his feet into his mouth? Isn’t this one of the major reasons why some of his younger staffers left? Because of a boss who talks way too fast and relies heavily on others to clean up his mess?

Duke Aiona? Nah. I no think so.

But one would think that he’ll probably run again.

The Hawaii political waters are stale and stagnant. Time to huli the water.

He hasn’t had much time to study the current players on film yet because of the focus on recruiting. They will try to install as much of the base stuff as they can in the spring. He also mentioned something about using personnel groups and different formations. He will also talk to his bros Cal and Ron to get input on the current players.

Increase taxes, cut services, or input a state lottery money has to be generated somehow. No one likes the first two, but a lottery would generate much needed capital to fund state projects. Raider Nation : FOX Sports news gossip …

” Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie has found a new head coach, FOXSports.com has learned.

Former Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Dennis Allen has reached an agreement to lead the Silver and Black in the 2012 season, but contract details still must be hammered out.

Allen informed the Broncos on Tuesday he was taking the Raiders’ head-coaching position. The Broncos hired Allen as defensive coordinator exactly a year ago to the day. Allen had previous coaching experience with the New Orleans Saints’ secondary unit. “

What you see with Abercrombie is what you get when you take a career legislator/congressman and put him in an executive leadership position. The first job is poor preparation for the second, because in the first job you can do and say all kinds of irresponsible things without any serious consequences. Not so in the second job.

1st day back after a week of snow days. While it was tough for nearly everyone it was extra difficult for some of my kids. They are on free/reduced meals. For a week they were without power and food, and reliable transportation to get to a food bank (assuming they were open and had food available).

Some kids enjoyed the time off playing in the snow. Others were worried about keeping warm and constant hunger pains.

  161. BigHiloFan2 January 24, 2012 6:15 pm

once upon a time, in the more “happy days are here again” times

and not in the now, the more austere times,

now, in da austere times, when I’m trying to support a man who wanted to come home to Hawaii and help us in the here and now,

and knowing Coach is trying to encourage the players in the here and now,

there is no cutting slack for anybody. the current crop. the recruits. us. all of us. we’re all going to encourage Hawaii to do good.

Coach Chow is going full on. and i’m supporting Coach Chow in his effort to excel at the here and now.

    Go Warriors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i wonda if the relationship between the guv and teachers is “excellent”????

  172. tom mui January 24, 2012 6:57 pm

    #171 Whitey

If this was a country that had a Parlementary form of government and the leaders proposed a certain policy which gets overwhelming rejected, it would be a form of “no-confidence” in its leaders and there would be a call for a new government.

Maybe the question really should be if the relationship between the Union leadership and the teachers is excellent.

  173. whitey January 24, 2012 7:04 pm

counselor, you get me there, but could be. the union leadership endorsed the guv for election because he one democrat. so the relationship between leadership and teachers is not necessarily “excellent”, but then again it could be “excellent”. so, leadership may be asked to step down because teachers did not listen to them and basically have “no confidence”. ok, ok, mind slowly absorbing legal talk.

  183. jkjones January 24, 2012 7:30 pm

warriors will be working from a pro-set and the OL will have to pull out and run more to the perimeter as well as downfield. the run game will be vital in defining our offense. chow will need to remake our OL. they must be quicker and better conditioned. look at the recruits he is going after. they are big-sized athletic-types with balance-on-the-run.

  184. whitey January 24, 2012 7:32 pm

stevem, s why we should have gone to law school. these legal guys get many answers and when you think you got it, they give you the slide and escape. the only way i going get one straight answer from the counselor is to buy sum “maui wowee” and bring it to hnl.

  192. tom mui January 24, 2012 7:47 pm

    #176 Whitey:

No. Parliamentary government – there is clear cut separation of executive and legislative. In Great Britain, for example, the people elect their representatives (House of Commons) and the majority party elects their “Prime leader” – i.e. Prime Minister and so that party can propose and enact legislation. If the proposal gets rejected by the majority in Parliament, there is what is called a “loss of confidence” and usually new elections are called.

The US has a clear cut separation of the executive and legislative departments. The President, for example, can propose legislation and the legislative branch can reject it. The legislative branch can also enact laws, make their own proposals and enact them

  193. whitey January 24, 2012 7:47 pm

Regarding recruiting, Tommy Lee made it sound like thay have enough QBs right now and would not look for more. Regarding FB he said they have some guys already on team and some TE recruits may be able to switch to FB too.

Ipu Man – The light rail in Portland is fairly quiet. As a matter of fact, you need to look both ways before you cross the street to make sure one is not coming. The regular train is very noisy, b ut not the light rail.

Maybe the question really should be if the relationship between the Union leadership and the teachers is excellent.

    Both excellent questions … :-p

    Stu Padasso #97,

Where do you get your info from. You’ve obviously never been to the mainland. Baseball is the 2nd most popular sport in the country. The NBA is way behind.

manuel was explaining to his wife that when he dies, he wants her to go to the bank, get a half a million dollars in hundreds and twenties, and put them in a pillow. take the pillow with the money and tie it in the attic so when he passes to go up to heaven, he will pick it up. so upon manuel’s death, mary did exactly as instructed. mary checked every day to see if manuel picked up the bag. after 2 weeks, the bag was still there, so mary called out loud to manuel “I think I put the bag in wrong place, I should have put it in the basement”.

  209. SteveM January 24, 2012 9:54 pm

I was cleaning out one of my mailboxes and found this Hawaiian “history” quiz. How many can you answer?

BTW, it was sent by Slugger

How much Hawaii History do you know? Age is a plus here!!!

    1) The hotel’s name means the “surface of the sea”. It was built near Chinn Ho’s family’s duck and rice pond. Ho’s company, Capital Investment, got its start at McKinley High School in the 1920’s to pay for a broken window.

    2) The name literally means “white tree store”, and was founded in 1662 in Edo , Japan as a drapery and notions store

    3) This company, owned by the Fukunaga family, was once called Waialua Garage, a two car service station in Waialua

    4) C.K. Ai founded this company105 years ago. It burned down in its first 6 months then again 20 years later. To bring supplies to Hawaii, they built their own ship, the fastest 5-masted schooner in the Pacific.

    5) Retail guru, Glenn Kaya brought this company to Hawaii in 1958. You had to be a member to come into the store. They leased out space to businesses that ran its various departments. ABC Stores, Wong’s Drapery, C.S Wo, Mid-Pacific Lumber, Kim Chow, and Hauoli were all tenants of this company which closed in1993.

    6) Most remember this company as a fabric and dry goods store in Ala Moana Center but 75 years ago, the store was known and loved around the world as Hawaii’s best shirt maker. Chotaru Miyamoto ran advertisements using pidgin and broken English that locals found cute and touching.

    7) Shopping on Oahu used to be in the downtown area. When Lowell Dillingham proposed building a 100-acre City of Tomorrow retail mall at Ala Moana, downtown businesses were reluctant to move, until this store made a commitment. It began as a watch company in Chicago in 1886.

    8) This retailer on several islands carries the name of a well-known Hawaiian entertainer from the 1950’s who did the Hula Hop. You can see the largest Aloha Shirt in the world at their Honolulu store.

    9) Can you remember the name of the super market on School Street and Nuuanu Avenue? It opened in 1935 and closed in 1983.

    10) Thahn Quoc Lam started this sandwich place in 1984 and now has more than 20 franchises. The name means ” Paris ” in Vietnamese.

    11) These now-gone sister restaurants at Ala Moana Center were famous for pastrami sandwiches and Chinese take out. Calvin Chun owned both and named them for his daughters.

    12) This restaurant began as a four-table Japanese restaurant on New York ‘s west side in 1964. They are the most successful Japanese restaurant in the U.S. , having prepared over 100 million meals. The recipe for success was blending exotic Japanese dishes with a dazzling chef performance. The name means “red flower”.

    13) Perhaps the oldest restaurant in Honolulu , it opened in 1882. When tourists asked cab drivers to take them to the best Chinese restaurant in town, they took them here, partially because the fare was larger. A Hawaii Five-O character used the name.

    14) The oldest school in Hawaii , built in 1831 as a seminary for young men. It is the ninth oldest school in the U.S. The neighbor island institution prides itself with being the ” Oldest School West of the Rockies “.

  210. Bleed Green and White January 24, 2012 9:55 pm

Hey gang (including you Mr. Tsai),

    Just my two cents!

I read his article on listened to Dave Reardon on the radio (w/ B. Curran), and his take on all the recruiting is excitement, to me anyway, is really back-handed compliments.

He keeps saying “well, remember Hawaii fans were all excited when McMackin took over too”……

    Huh?

As if Mack, even June Jones for that matter, ever really made a solid effort to recruit Hawaii kids.

This, my friends, and correct me if I’m wrong, is the first all out effort by a U-H football coaching to staff to really get after local kids in the recruiting wars.

Rauscher and Powell (I believe that’s their names), the first two members of Norm Chow’s staff, hit Kahuku, Kamehameha and Punahou on their first full day. Followed that up with a visit to St. Louis.

Then they back-tracked to cover some of those schools a second time during their first week.

Gotta love that! That’s the first REAL effort in over 15 years by the UH coaching staff.

Not Mack, not Jones, not von Appen for that matter.

    DAMN IT’S REFRESHING!

I get a funny feeling good things are coming!

Guys we can have the best recruiting class in the NCAA but that’s only 50% of what will make us successful. Executing the game plan near flawlessly, and playing discipline on all positions with ultimate determination will indeed get us the results we want. Come LOI day, the glass will be half full fellas, time to kick the tires and light the fires because it’s show time behbeh!

You know, I wish kkea can have streaming video of all things pertaining to UH football, whether it’s interviews, behind the scenes or call the coaches. Hell, why not have the Bobby Curran show and The Sports Animals have episodes or podcasts to download since we all can’t listen all the time (work). Even if it is not the whole week, 1 days worth of either shows on video would be nice to add on their kkea website. I would love to see the studio, or the bars they do their shows at and call the coaches :).

I wonder if it’s possible or worth taking serious consideration. I personally love our kkea team and all they do for UH. Maybe a kkea video channel on oceanic digital cable or something one day. Can only hope eh?

    (#217 MIH)

Honestly, I believe “local telent” has been at an all time high over the last 4-6 years, maybe more to tell the truth.

I mean kids like Epenesa, Jamora, Afalava, Francisco, Ioane, Parker, and many, many more.

Thing is, and it saddens me to say, but according to many, if not most the kids that went away, it’s a running theme that were not at all shown any “love” by UH and it’s coaches.

I think that is what has many Warrior fans excited about this new regime.

Don’t get me wrong, UH will never, I repeat, never be able to land all the best kids, but for the first time in a long time, at least the program’s in the fight, int he conversation. And according to many of the families, they’re not being “hung out to dry” so to speak.

To me, THAT is what’s refreshing!

    And exciting!

    Just back from the farm…

Collectively, all the answers are in place… oldtimer808 has it all in #231

whitey — you did well for not living on Oahu (and not watching much Hawaii Five-O???) . Chun Hoon (#9) would be very difficult. But we used to shop there since we live in the Liliha-Judd area.

I do not know the 5th company in your #221 question.

Did TYaiea get it with “C. Brewer”?

    UHAlum91 — Liliha/Judd…? 🙂

jm2375 — #6 Musashiya was difficult. I happened to know that because their store was a marble shot away from Fong’s (char siu) in the Chinatown fish market and that is where my parents bought me first suit for a prom… 😆

  238. Jason January 24, 2012 11:52 pm

  239. Aaron January 25, 2012 12:21 am

#210: but that’s exactly what happened – when Jones first came aboard, there was all kind of excitement about the top local kids wanting to stay home (like Timmy Chang, who was a HUGE get at the time), but eventually things fell off and we started to hear about the rift between Jones and the North Shore. Then, along comes Mack and the first thing he says is that they are going to recruit better locally, and for a time it does seem like that’s happening… but then we start to hear more and more local kids saying how UH didn’t even approach them. So I wouldn’t hold it against the Bobby Currans of the world for pointing that stuff out. They’ve been around the program a long time and they want to see some proof over an extended period of time before they declare that things really are different under Norm Chow. I hope they are.

#75, Warriors scheduled to meet Huskies on Dec. 7, 2013 at Aloha Stadium. They’ll have a few players from Hawaii. Should be a good game. And the teams meet again on Sept. 19, 2015 in Seattle.

I think that 12/7/13 game date had to be moved because that is the date of the Pac-12 championship game. According to FB Schedules, the game at Aloha Stadium was moved to 8/30/14 and the game in Seattle is on 9/12/15.

After the Pac-12 expanded and set up a title game, the previously scheduled end-of-season games against Pac-12 teams had to be rescheduled.

  247. Garret January 25, 2012 4:30 am

It sure is hard for NMSU to hold on to coaches…typical of schools with smaller budgets. I’m posting this because it mentions how UH got Juan Lozano from NMSU for a similar position.

Four assistant coaches left the Aggies and the team also lost Juan Lozano, the football program coordinator the past three years, who recently accepted a similar position at the University of Hawaii.
