Off day

The coaches and players were given today as an off day as they head into the final stretch before Friday’s season opener against Central Arkansas. But many of the coaches still plan to be busy, setting the practice schedule, evaluating videos and finalizing the game plan. They also will tinker with the depth chart; while several positions are “bracketed,” you can only play one at a time.

Interesting note from Pat Bigold:

NUNS’ TAILGATE PARTY, 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 4:Β  Sister Joan of Arc Souza, St. Francis School principal, who has been a dedicated UH football fan since childhood in Pauoa, has once again bought a subscription to the pay-per-view telecasts of UH games and will project them on the wall of the campus student center.

She invites the Franciscan sisters, faculty and staff to hoist beer with her and cheer for the Warriors.

The nuns will be in tees and sweatshirts with UH logos. Sister Mary Edward Sugioka (“Sister Eddie”) has a UH football dress she wears for the occasions.

Happy birthday to Pride, Pomai, Cliff Sanchez, Dylan Linkner and Pohai Keliβ€˜ikipi.

Still “buzzing” about the great opening night at UH last night.

Game went by real quick and even though Western Michigan returned a lot of people from last season “Sweet 16” team, the Wahine were WAY ahead.

Seems like us and UCLA are the only “studs” in this opening tourney and Sunday is going to a good one…

Probably might wanna get my tickets early for Sunday as the “johnny come latelys” will be out in force to suck up the good seats… as usual.

BTW, the new green court is something to behold in person.

    NOTHING BEATS UH SPORTS LIVE!!!

  16. Derek August 29, 2009 12:24 pm

    Couple of observations:
    1) Jim Leahey makes a lot of mistakes on the telecast last night. For example, he called Hawaii winning a point when in fact, Western Michigan won that point. He kept mentioning Brittiny Hewitt name in the 3rd game, when in fact she wasn’t even in the game. He didn’t realize it for several points until Chris McLaughlin pointed out that Alexis Forsythe was in and made a point. I think Jim maybe need to start turning the torch over to Bobby Curren.
    2) Watched the Mililani-Punahou game last night in HD. The best player on the field is Taz Stevenson. He’s shifty, fast, and w/ very good acceleration. Plays both ways. This guy is an a-tha-lete as Joe Namath would say. He has the height and frame to put on another 20 pounds easily without sacrificing speed. UH has offered, but they should keep on contacting him regularly. Only question is his grades! Stevenson is big time.
    3) Guy w/ potential: For Punahou, I think a DE named Forest Buckner
has tremendous potential. Looks like a great pass rusher. He’s 6’5″ or 6’6″ and I’m not sure if he’s a Jr. or Sr., but he has a chance. He’s skinny as hell, but w/ the weight room and natural growth, he can fill out easily and be very very good.

I think they said that kid was a Sophomore and he’s 6’7′ 😯

  19. Kapahulu August 29, 2009 12:49 pm

I would like to commend Jim Donovan for his outstanding efforts in last nights Wahine Volleyball contest. I stood next to him for a few minutes last night as he personally greeted and thanked every person coming in through the gates. He did this for over an hour. When was the last time Herman Frazier did this? I even observed Jim Donovan inside the seating area assisting patrons with directions to their seats. He deserves all the support that we can all possibly give to him and the Athletics programs. The best way that we can all help is to buy tickets. Congratulations to Jim Donovan and Chevron for the outstanding new playing surface for Wahine Volleyball. Come and see it live and enjoy and support Wahine Volleyball. The Wahine were so dominating last night that a lot of people weren’t even finished with their beer yet.

  20. Willie August 29, 2009 12:50 pm

Derek, you’re spot on with your 3 obsevations. Maybe Pops Leahey needs new glasses, when Fowler came in for Forsythe he called her Hewitt too.

Too bad M Wie could not ride the “mo” of the Solheim Cup but this is stroke play not match. Having her typical Saturday fade & dive. As the analyst have been saying they really want to see her in contention on Sunday. She has no chance tomorrow at the Safeway Classic, but will probably have a great Sunday outing with no pressure at 11 strokes off the lead with only 6 or 7 holes to go today. Maybe next week?

  22. A-House August 29, 2009 1:18 pm

    Derek:

I would prefer that Pops Leahy turn over the “torch” to son Kanoa who, IMHO, has come a long way and seems to be doing well at broadcasting games.

Kanoa taking over the Leahy “tradition” I can accept for it’s a legacy in Hawaii.

  23. koakaneβ„’ August 29, 2009 1:19 pm

Anheuser-Busch Sales of Hawaii has announced that it will once again conduct its successful “Get in the Game” promotion which will provide up to $100,000 in support to assist the University of Hawaiβ€˜i Athletics Department.
Through November 30, Anheuser-Busch Sales of Hawaii will donate 25 cents from every case of Budweiser, Bud Light, Budweiser Select, and Bud Light Lime products sold across the state of Hawai`i, up to $100,000.

It’s kind of cool. Looks like wood.

  32. whitey August 29, 2009 1:58 pm

willie, you right about mw not having it to get over the hump. up thru 16, she shoots 5 birdies. imagine 5 birdies!!!!!! then kicks herself in the arse by shooting 4 bogeys. The rest of the field is not kicking arse and this was day that she could have been in the lead or near the top, but somehow she get brain lock.

  33. madeinhawaii August 29, 2009 2:05 pm

    Liz,

Snow Leopard uses their newly updated dual boot utility called Boot Camp 3.0 to install Windows 7 in a separate partition. It just goes to prove that the hardware for Mac and the PC are now, pretty much, one and the same. Both Windows 7 and the new Mac Snow Leopard OS draw about the same amount of juice from a laptop’s battery. Why would they build that option in, one has to ask.

For my money. I’ll stick with Windows 7 in the first place.

From my personal experience, it seems that the Mac Users that are really hard pressed against the PC are ones that don’t like the steep learning curve of switching between the OS. Sort of like film photographers who didn’t want to switch to Digital and Photoshop. … are they still around? .. the film photographers, I mean.

  34. gmahoney August 29, 2009 2:08 pm

Awright, Sister Joan. I know you and all the sisters will be praying for a UH win.

P.S: Sr Joan was one of my teachers back in the day at SFS. She was cool, for a nun.

Whitey ~ I’m afraid they would drink all our beru!

  36. no jim leahy fan August 29, 2009 2:22 pm

Agreed – Jim Leahy should step aside.

Kanoa or Rob De would be OK with me.

Probably just me; but I never did care for Jim’s voice, style, and delivery, all these years.

  37. labrat August 29, 2009 3:26 pm

I really liked pops but I also believe maybe it is time for him to hang it up. McLaughlin can do the play by play and has in the past. And I have enjoyed it when they bring in former wahines like Lisa to do the color.

  38. Committed Road Warrior August 29, 2009 3:36 pm

I’m pretty sure the first couple paragraphs of this article was written in jest, enough so that I started laughing out loud reading it:

The NFL officially has officially embraced do-overs as league policy. In the new Cowboys Stadium, when a ball hits the monstrous video board, we will have a do-over, just like you had when you were a kid playing in your backyard and a wayward ball went into the street, hit a telephone wire, or got caught in a tree. The NFL has adopted a rule widely used by nine-year-olds across the world. Awesome.

In other rule changes announced today, the NFL announced that all games end immediately the second Jimmy’s mom yells, “Supper’s ready!”, it’s every man for themselves if someone accidentally breaks a window, and no one — and I mean no one — better tell their mom if Tony says another bad word. In addition, when games have concluded, any low-down mongrel who drinks the purple stuff instead of the Sunny D will be suspended for eight games.

it will be no wonder if kaz stevenson does not get a recruiting call from those watching last night’s game tapes. all night long larry kept calling him “chaz” stevenson. kanoa is too polite to correct him.

Wow! Some very auspicious folks sharing this birth date!!! Congratulations to all!

  45. BG August 29, 2009 4:03 pm

For my money, the best VB announcer is Scott Robs

  46. whitey August 29, 2009 4:06 pm

sometimes decisions need to be made that is not popular or most difficult. this is the case of how much more will you let jim leahy be the lead announcer for uh sports (vb right now). he had some major problems last night, but no one from K5 tried to help him make the necessary corrections till it was too late which made it look worse. maybe he should be the backup and let someone else do the play by play, but i truly appreciate leahy thru all the years and am not sure how you would phase him out or put him in the background. out of respect, i think he should be given the opportunity to decide when he will phase himself out cause he has done so much for uh and hawaii sports.

  47. whitey August 29, 2009 4:07 pm

kekoa, i agree with you on the biru, but maybe we don’t have to bring any and they might have a stash. hahahahaaaa

  48. BG August 29, 2009 4:08 pm

    Robs=Robbs

  49. Papa is an intelligent man and a realistic one.

  50. whitey August 29, 2009 4:09 pm

kekoa, can you imagine me and you watching the game with the nuns and blaze makes a katoosh!! what would we say??? Nice tackle!!!! hahahahahaaaa

  51. curveball August 29, 2009 4:13 pm

I think the nuns should come to the tailgate……

  52. whitey August 29, 2009 4:15 pm

LizK, i agree that Papa Leahy is a very intelligent guy who probably has thousands and thousands of sport stories, but somewhere along, he has lost the game preparation which is a must for announcers. Game prep includes knowing players faces and names along with the respective coaches. He has help at all uh games and they should be more alert and make sure papa is doiing the right thing.

  53. whitey August 29, 2009 4:17 pm

curveball, you read my mind, but can you imagine them at a tailgate with shorts and tee shirts!!!!!!!!!! and drinking all your biru. hahahaaaaa

  54. whitey- might be something else besides prep. I’m thinking synapses and past health issues. My reference to realistic means Papa can review his performance, make adjustments and come to conclusions…

  55. whitey August 29, 2009 4:21 pm

mw shot 1 under today and is 5 under. she is 5 strokes behind the leader. imagine if she did what most of the leaders did today, -3, she would be right up there at the top, but 5 birdies and4 bogeys will not make it.

  56. GRM August 29, 2009 4:25 pm

Pops Leahy is THE voice of the voice for UH. Sure he makes mistakes, but that’s jim Leahy. Let him go until he desides its time to go. At that time Kanoa will be ready to take over the legacy. Pops has given us all this UH excitement for many years. Regardless of his mistakes, I still like him.

  57. GRM- ditto. Pops is my personal fave…
    Crrrruuush the coconut!

  58. whitey August 29, 2009 5:06 pm

jim leahy has always been my fav for uh, but he needs help. we may know the players as players, but to others it may be their son, daughter, cousin, etc and not knowing who is playing may cause some concerns. when their player makes a play on tv, i think the whole clan and friends are happy, but if you recognize the wrong person, i personally would not be too happy if the player was related to me.

  59. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 29, 2009 5:11 pm

I like those St. Francis nuns! My mother’s cousin is there; I’ll bet Sr. Theresa watches UH football.

Off to the UH WVB games. Hope I don’t miss too much of the UCLA game. Esme & out…

  64. PONO August 29, 2009 5:55 pm

I’ve been saying it for a couple of years that Jim Leahy has to go. I think he should leave while he is still semi on top of his game. No one wants to see him forced out but he is getting really bad calling games. If you think the vball game was bad wait till football rolls around and there are twice the amount of players and subs running around. He constantly makes major mistakes.

  65. whitey August 29, 2009 6:11 pm

Pono, i think you understand why it is difficult to make a decision on jl. he has been with us thru thick and thin, always positive about our players, and truly understands the aloha way. that is why my concern about how can he be graciously replaced or will he make that decision. i would truly be happy if jl makes that decision and not someone else.

  66. whitey August 29, 2009 6:13 pm

kazz, will be looking for you tonight at the vb game. where will you be sitting?? hope it is somewhere where the tv camera can pick you up. by the way, what the score right now????

  67. Kapolei Doc August 29, 2009 6:13 pm

OK it is time for some bulletin board fodder for the up coming game.

If you are interested, go to the local Conway ARK newspaper website and see what the latest comment from their sports Guru says. His comments regarding the Warrior ‘s polynesian players names should fire someone up.

  68. gmahoney August 29, 2009 6:33 pm

    Here’s the link:

    http://thecabin.net/news/local/2009-08-29/mccollums-column-hawaii-players%E2%80%99-names-make-tongue-twisters

The guys should introduce themselves after a tackle, “Hi, my name is Rocky Savaiigaea, nice to meet you.” Then, after they return home, they can inform this reporter exactly how the names are pronounced.

  69. whitey August 29, 2009 6:41 pm

kapolei doc, thanks to the referral. i don’t you if you read the bottom part, but they had something funny. A coach at Texas A&M calls in one of his players because he had 4 F’s and 1 D. He tells the player that he is spending too much time on one subject. hahahaaaaaa

  70. whitey August 29, 2009 6:42 pm

    kazz, is gametime 7:00 pm?????

  71. HiFlyer August 29, 2009 6:46 pm

whitey – 7:00 pm but I think kazz is already there watching the UCLA game.

  72. lava August 29, 2009 6:48 pm

Surprised by post #42. Sani Fuimano showed me nothing in the Mililani game. The Mililani O-line had its way with the Puns, with the notable exception of the 6-7 sophmore, who showed great speed, strength and athleticism.

  73. labrat August 29, 2009 6:51 pm

Al I agree #54 had Maa smiling. But so far this season the Kam defense has impressed me the most. But there still are a lot of games to be played and we got a big one tonight. I have a lot more teams I want to see but really like the crop of qbs I have seen so far. Look out Manley.

  74. Bandit August 29, 2009 6:52 pm

#36 I like Jim, but I agree on Rob DeMello. He’s got it going on. So much knowledge and he just pumps it out when he was on the radio. Hopefully once he gets settled down on the family thing he’ll have more time time to become the man in Hawaii sports.

  75. bighilofan2 August 29, 2009 6:55 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos.

Jim Leahey. da ole guy. He’s my fave too. An if he needs some cracks to get da gears loose, so be it. an a kick too for good measure. πŸ˜†

I think he is just great. and if he’s make da mistake, give him a call. he needs a funny #2 guy so that his voice can continue. just needs fu fu fuuud an he’s good to go. πŸ˜†

its like coach. he needs some fu fu coaches 2 oh… he get… πŸ˜†

    well, at least one.

    na na na j/k. i tink 😯

  77. bighilofan2 August 29, 2009 7:02 pm

our players, our coaches, they ALL gotta be playing like dis is showtime. it is.

    GO WARRIORS! ! ! ! ! ! !

  78. bighilofan2 August 29, 2009 7:09 pm

imo our biggest hurdle is game time adjustments. Particularly da first game. you have to make game time adjustment, not wait till half, realtime. you know your weakest links, coach. plan for that. And if that means passing the buck to somebody, den pass da buck. you can do it. you owe it to yourself to do it!

the bottom line is, we got the talent coach. great great talen.

you can do it, coach. we know you can! sometimes you gotta let somebodey else pull da trigga. but if you going pass da buck, den hold him accountable.

make da guyz accountable! you did it last year. don’t wait till da end of the season.

its like da #2 QB. you already no da answer. wat you waiting for?

  79. bighilofan2 August 29, 2009 7:18 pm

  81. buffoman August 29, 2009 7:56 pm

    Here’s my take on Colt.

He”s struggling a bit and is pressing. Wants to be sure his footwprk is correct, he does as Zorn says and is not able to perform as he did last year.

    So.

The ‘skins will look to trade him and keep Chase. They appear to be happy with #1 and #2 so the only open spot is the #3. Colt is not so clearly ahead BUT he does not look bad. He still looks like he belongs on someone’s roster. The ‘skin will do the same as they did last year when the kept Colt. Only this time, they will try to get something for him.

I do not see him with the ‘Skins at the start of the regular season.

  82. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 29, 2009 8:01 pm

    Whitey,

Got a previous engagement. Will not be at the volleyball game tonight, but will be there tomorrow.

  83. Colt will be fine.
    He’s a Redskin.
They are starting to gel as a team.
    They are starting to BELIEVE.

  84. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 29, 2009 8:06 pm

    Kapolei Doc and gmahoney,

    It’s not bad at all.

Unlike that Georgia reporter that called Hawaii locals “pineapple heads”.

So I call the UH ticket office and I ask how they’re going to let people back into the arena for the 5pm game since the ONE ticket is good for the 11am game also since that is quite a GAP inbetween game times.

They said to have your HAND STAMPED before you leave the 11am game IF you get to the 11am game as they cannot scan the same ticket twice.

Personally I think they should come up with a better way of doing this… Maybe placing a customized UH holographic sticker on the tickets of those that came to the 11am game???

Just a thought as I was going to check out football practice tomorrow at 7am and then maybe cruise around for a bit until the 11am volleyball game.

  87. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 29, 2009 8:17 pm

Away from a TV right now, but sounds like the Wahine having some consistency issues right now.

UCLA swept Santa Clara with ease last night.

  88. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 29, 2009 8:20 pm

Amber Kaufman with another service error? 😯

  89. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 29, 2009 8:23 pm

Sounds like they are going to Kanani on the left too many times!!!

  90. gmahoney August 29, 2009 8:24 pm

    Wahine, you are killing me!

  91. whitey August 29, 2009 8:26 pm

kazz, the wahines need your help

  92. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 29, 2009 8:28 pm

Damnit, I need to get to a TV!!!!

This is hard to listen to and to believe. Whole team sounds off right now.

  93. Ralph August 29, 2009 8:29 pm

mafua needs to read the defense better, she’s doing her set left routine hoping for a kill or an occasional slide with kaufmann. got to work our middles down the middle and not only for the slide. game two, santa clara used their middles a lot.

  94. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 29, 2009 8:29 pm

    Whitey,

No one at the Na Wahine Roofing Company is picking up da phone!!!!!

  95. madeinhawaii August 29, 2009 8:30 pm

Wahine not playing as a team. Passing and setting just aren’t there tonight.

  96. whitey August 29, 2009 8:30 pm

the wahines have a major passing problem tonight, but the most glaring is the huge weakness in their defense. santa clara keeps dinking and dropping balls in the area right behind the 2 front line blockers and the wahines have no one there. what makes it worse is that it is so obvious even to someone like me who has no knowledge on volleyball coaching. this “circle the wagon” defense leaves a hole everytime behind the blockers.

  97. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 29, 2009 8:32 pm

    Dey you go Hewitt!!!

  98. whitey August 29, 2009 8:34 pm

kazz, the wahines not playing like fri nite, but i am more than satisfied with their team this year. they play good volleyball, but right now are in a major funk. now if the coaching staff can correct the “circle the wagon”, they will be able to offset dinks and drops.

  99. Da Punchbowl Kid August 29, 2009 8:34 pm

Watching the St. Louis – Leileihua game. That one RB for the Mules has such a familiar sounding name… Hurtado? Murtado? something like that… πŸ˜†

He’s the spark for the hapless Mules so far.

  100. Ralph August 29, 2009 8:35 pm

actually a tough game like this will help the team develop more cohesion, two new starters, and with the addition of two 6’3 players this game will give the coach a better idea on what needs to be worked on.

  101. gmahoney August 29, 2009 8:36 pm

    Yes!

  102. gmahoney August 29, 2009 8:37 pm

    Aloha ball!

  103. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 29, 2009 8:38 pm

C’mon ladies, listen to Uncle Shoji!!!

Need something big from Cubi-Otineru or Kaufman right now!

  104. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 29, 2009 8:39 pm

    Or Kanani..

  105. Ralph August 29, 2009 8:41 pm

wahines haven’t been the same in the middle since the bown days. the middles got to at least slow the ball down if they can’t get a block but neither happening. we need a quicker libero or a taller one to provide more lane coverage, a big body little Hittle.

  106. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 29, 2009 8:41 pm

Can we do something about that gap???? 😑

  107. gmahoney August 29, 2009 8:42 pm

    Yes, Kaufman

  108. No lack of drama in the thrid Wahine game!

  109. Ralph August 29, 2009 8:43 pm

what an ugly win but its a W for the third match.

  110. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 29, 2009 8:43 pm

Well they needed extra play, but not against Santa Clara, at least on paper.

Let’s play like the #7 team in the nation ladies!

  111. gmahoney August 29, 2009 8:45 pm

That last game was NOT pretty. Serving, passing, not being predictable. That’s the key, ladies.

  112. Loa August 29, 2009 8:45 pm

    good evening gang!

Happy birthday to Pride., Pomai, Cliff, Dylan and Pohai !

    great vb match going on

  113. Ralph August 29, 2009 8:46 pm

last night the middles got 61 sets after 3 games, tonight about 24, mafua got to look to the middles to open up the left and right sides for one on one chances.

  114. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 29, 2009 8:47 pm

Scott Robs is a GREAT play by play guy, but I have to say, I hate having to listen to this and there is no TV in sight where I am!!!

  115. Ralph August 29, 2009 8:48 pm

Hewitt has 8 kills in 12 attempts, but hardly any since the middle of the second game.

  116. whitey August 29, 2009 8:49 pm

hooohaaaa, get the heart pumping. santa clara knows where they can score point and on the last hit for them, if aneli neva block it, pt for santa clara. “circle the wagon” is when you have covered wagons and the indians going attack you.

  117. whitey August 29, 2009 8:50 pm

kazz, that’s ok, now you going get plenty energy for tomorrow nite. i got to see you on tv tomorrow night. the rubba man goin get nothing on you. heeehaaaaaa!!!!!!

  118. whitey August 29, 2009 8:52 pm

kazz, no forget to see if the nfa is there. hahahaaaaaaa

  119. wafan August 29, 2009 8:52 pm

    Hi!

  120. Ralph August 29, 2009 8:53 pm

statistics wise the wahines look ok, ferrell struggling but overall the team is okay, but the game in real time is kind of ugly.

  121. wafan August 29, 2009 8:53 pm

Happy birthday to the Three Caballeros (sp?) — Pomai, Cliff, and Pride!

  122. Ralph August 29, 2009 9:00 pm

Kanani with 21 kills in 3 1/2 sets…lots of sets to the left, i hope her shoulder holds up for the season.

  123. gmahoney August 29, 2009 9:02 pm

That last game took a lot out of Santa Clara, now they doubt themselves.

  124. Ralph August 29, 2009 9:03 pm

Hewitt has 10 blocks up to this point (BA and solo combined)

  125. gmahoney August 29, 2009 9:05 pm

And the Wahine are playing better.

  126. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 29, 2009 9:06 pm

    Whitey,

    Kefe nfa. πŸ˜†

  127. Ralph August 29, 2009 9:07 pm

2-0, good start…got to crank up Kazz for tomorrow night. but if going to practice at 6:30 and stick around UH, better stock up on red bull.

  128. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 29, 2009 9:10 pm

Now I gotta make sure I get home for the replay.

Congrats to Brittany Hewitt on her 10 blocks!

Perhaps it’s good that the Wahine got challenged, or should I say made themselves get challenged tonight to get themselves “on edge” so to speak for the big match up tomorrow against UCLA…

In the all-time series against UCLA over the years aren’t we a little ahead?

  129. Garret August 29, 2009 9:11 pm

Bess has been struggling this preseason, which has hurt him in the 3-player battle for the starting WR spot.

The fact is, this preseason has raised questions whether the Dolphins have maintained the level of last year’s No. 10-ranked pass offense because Ted Ginn Jr. hasn’t been a consistent target, Greg Camarillo is still working toward recovering from knee surgery, and Davone Bess has at times been betrayed by his usually dependable hands.

“Every year is a new year,” Bess said. “Our biggest thing is rebuilding the chemistry we had last year – coming together and clicking on all cylinders again. It was there last year.

“Now we have to pretty much go back to the drawing board and rebuild the chemistry we had. We’ve got lots of work to do.”

  130. Garret August 29, 2009 9:12 pm

It isn’t good when Miami’s head coach mentions the other two guys battling for the starting spot and leaves Bess out.

Camarillo, after all, was the breakout story of 2008, unexpectedly igniting Miami’s passing game as he earned himself a three-year extension before he blew out his knee.

Even as Hartline continues to impress, don’t think Sparano has been so quick to forget about his 613 yards and 55 catches in just 11 games when evaluating the current competition. No decisions at the position have been made yet, and Sparano expects to give both plenty of playing time in the final exhibition game Thursday before deciding his rotation.

“I’m going to play them both: Hartline and Camarillo,” Sparano said. “We’ll see what falls out of that. Both players did some good things in the game the other night. Even Greg only had one opportunity and he made the most of the opportunity. He blocked really well and his routes were crisper in that ball game.”

  131. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 29, 2009 9:13 pm

    Ralph,

No way I am staying on campus from 6am to 5pm. Thinking on it, I might as well pass on the Western Michigan and Santa Clara game at 11am tomorrow.

I better get some sleep after football practice for the Wahine game tomorrow.

  132. Garret August 29, 2009 9:13 pm

    Samson is struggling with Oakland.

Center Samson Satele is struggling but there are no other options. John Wade has been out more than a week with a stinger. Not good, given the 3-4 defensive tackles he’ll face starting Sept. 14 with Jamaal Williams.

  133. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 29, 2009 9:14 pm

No doubt Slugger had a good time tonight at the game! πŸ˜›

Well, I’m back from the Viloria fight. Decent crowd, but nothing spectacular. Gotta love how boisterous local crowds get, though.

Not sure how many boxing fans we have here, but I thought I’d give a report.

The judges scored the fight 118-110, 117-112 and 117-111 for Viloria. I actually thought it was a bit closer. Iribe did a good job trying to fight back in the later rounds, and he got some shots in that stunned Viloria. On the other end, Viloria had some nice flurries, but they never seemed to affect Iribe. Dayton’s article is a pretty good summary of what happened. While I’m happy Viloria won, it’ll be a challenge for him to try and unify the belts. Fighters at that level don’t exactly have weak chins. I’m not saying Viloria can’t do it, though, cause he does has amazing speed.

Kelli will be pleased to hear that Isaac Arasato won in his bout. Apparently, the guy he fought hurt himself in the 1st, and was unable to continue. Not the way you like to win a fight, but a W is a W.

Raul Munoz didn’t stand a chance against Alfonso Gomez. First fight in the afternoon, and it barely went over one minute.

She still needs to learn how to punch back, but Shalei Padilla had a decent showing in her pro debut. She did lose in the 4th, but she showed she has a mean chin. Took a bunch of shots to the head in stride.

One of the free play links is awaiting moderation. Let me try again:

Placebos are getting increasingly effective, especially with results that have showed that the different colors and sizes of placebos makes them effective for different types of treatments (yellow is better for antidepressants, green reduces anxiety, placebos taken more times per day result in more effective relief).

kazz we are ahead of UCLaA by 2 games, but we have lost the last 4

  142. madeinhawaii August 29, 2009 9:27 pm

Wahine sure got off to a slow start tonight. Nice to see them not get too unravelled and pull it all together for an impressive 4th game with no let down towards the end even with a significant lead.

    Garret…

“Placebos..!”. At first I thought you said.. Placidos… and I was gonna say inasmuch as we have plenty of those in Hawaii (Placidos), I don’t think we have too many yellow or green ones.

  143. BG August 29, 2009 9:39 pm

Congratulations to the Wahine in fighting back from adversity! Don’t want too many life lessons like that, but they can be positives. When I saw Dave Shoji’s comments this morning about wanting his outsides to “conserve energy”, I thought, “Oh, oh…planting a seed like that will surely result in the team coming in flat!”

  144. whitey August 29, 2009 10:00 pm

Congrats to the wahines. tonight the weaknesses were very glaring, but impressed with their tenacity and attack attitude.

  145. placebos… I was talking about nopales on fb – for the dyslexic among us…

  146. TYaiea August 29, 2009 10:17 pm

Game 4 that’s how the wahine should play all the time. They were clicking. What I don’t understand is why Coach Shoj keep putting in the wahine, J Lee, there must be some others taller and better. Go na wahine.

    Shoots! Lost my post.

Exciting game tonight. I’ll be at tomorrow’s game, too. Missed the earlier UCLA game. Got to talk to Dan Fisher, MVB asst. coach, & his wife. The men’s VB players were at the game. They need to to let Billy V know they are there to generate some PR to get people to their games. Saw Dunnachie, Enos & a few other football players. Got to say Hi to Midori7 & UHFan808. Saw A-Joe waving his towel at us & W-Doc walking into the SSC.

I have a ticket for next Saturday’s WVB game if anyone wants it. (Maybe I should have ST give it away…) I have a birthday party to go to for my Mom’s 90-y.o.-WVB-season-ticket-holder cousin.

Will you be going to UH football games when you are 90 years old?

  160. Slugger August 30, 2009 12:08 am

Ooops! Ticket is for Sunday’s WVB games, not Saturday!

  161. Slugger August 30, 2009 12:12 am

    Good night!

  162. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc August 30, 2009 2:31 am

Agree with #36. Whenever we used to watch a UH football game at home, we’d turn off the volume and listen to the radio instead. Now we go to a sports bar. Fortunately, the noise covers up the tv announcers so we listen to a little radio we bring along with us. We always bring a radio along to the baseball games.

Wahine volleyball is defnitely an interesting experience for those of us sitting with a bunch of people who’ve been following Shoji for as long as he’s been coaching here. One woman who sits either behind us or in front of us depending upon whateva and who’s maybe six inches shorter than I am has a voice I can hear on the other side of the Arena when the fans are screaming.

Wonder if she goes to football games, too.

Saw the Sports Brothers again at the Santa Clara match; however, I scoured the stands with the binocs and never saw anyone except for Virginia Hinshaw.

Before I forget – mahalo for all the computer comments. In addition to standard office stuff, I need a laptop when I return to school next year to study Civil Engineering plus do a wide range of multi-media stuff.

BTW – Costco now has full-time security in their parking lot.

Time to go to bed – have a wonderful Sunday everyone.

Oh man its getting harder and harder to pull myself out of bed for this… What’s wrong with me?

Anyway, looks like practice this morning is at Ching Field. The players are dressed and filing out of the locker room but walking around the corner back into the complex. Meeting before practice perhaps?

I was worried earlier when I drove in an both fields were empty and no equipment managers were around.

  172. Bulla August 30, 2009 6:46 am

    Al,

the mules have 2 bookends on the D line that are pretty nasty, call them T-n-T, played havoc in the Crusaders backfield all night. both 6’2, one is 250 lbs., the other 290 lbs. Manley had some good passes, a lot of drops from his receivers. Saints were erratic at best, if they’re going to make a run they gotta get it together.

Rocky told me they have practice in 6 minutes, GO WARRIORS!!!!

Goog morning Tsaikos, and um, Sister Joan of Arc Souza. That sounds like a neat way to enjoy UH football!

I noticed Phil Steele calls for Hawaii and smu to have the most improved pass offenses in the country this year. This was mentioned in relation to fantasy football picks. He has Greg Alexander as the #17 QB pick. I can’t figure out how he has NV’s Colin Kaepernick ahead at #7. He’ll get the rushing yds, I guess.

“See” some of you later today for the draft.

  192. whitey August 30, 2009 8:31 am

things are looking interesting at the safeway classic. mw is -4 thru 10 and now trails the leader by 2 strokes. looks like she holding up today and not putting herself in a bind. lots of things can happen and hopefully she comes through today.

  193. Momo August 30, 2009 8:35 am

Thank you all for the happy birthday wishes….It is good to be reminded and it does make one happy knowing that others care. Thanks…My new project for now is to help the short term students at Olomana learn about organic gardening in containers…It is fun and they love it.

Capitol -ist/WassupDoc: One more bit of advice re: your computer.

I had a laptop 15″ screen, CD/DVD disc; quite a bit of memory etc.

Now I have a small Lenovo laptop. The big one was about 8 pounds and after awhile, it felt like 8-tons. The Lenovo is strictly travel and doesn’t have a CD/DVD but only weighs 2 pounds.

If you are going to be carrying it all around campus, with 10 tons of books in your knapsack, you had better remember to look for a laptop that doesn’t weigh a ton.

If your laptop also substitutes for a desktop at home, then you might consider a laptop like the Sony/Mac that is light but powerful enough for your usage.

MOMO: Happy birthday and best wishes.

My daughter teaches and also has a bunch of earthworms in her classroom – even though she is English/Speech teacher!

  196. Pomai August 30, 2009 8:43 am

Ok I just have to add my 2cents about JL, I think he should stay but he needs a really good color man and I would hire Augie T. I’m serious for both WVB and WFB. Augie is sports nut just like us and I believe he would bring a fresh spin on the broadcast.

  204. 99club August 30, 2009 9:10 am

Good morning D1! I took too much time catching up on the previous posts before I realized it was sitting on 198.
Guess most of the gang’s out at practice or out enjoying the day. 5 days left! ‘Single digit midgets’ in countdown terminology. πŸ™‚

  205. whitey August 30, 2009 9:12 am

mw, -5 thru 13, still 2 back of leaders, but this is going to be her best score for the year if she keeps this up. who knows, might tie and go to playoff.

  206. d1ε³Ά August 30, 2009 9:15 am

    99club,

    Good one. πŸ˜†

  210. 99club August 30, 2009 9:19 am

…speaking of Sisters that are fans of UH: I remember in the mid ’70’s seeing Maryknoll Sisters in COURT SIDE seats at UH games in the HIC. If I remember correctly, a Maryknoll alumn paid for their seats.

  211. d1ε³Ά August 30, 2009 9:24 am

    DPK,

    Doing great.
Looks like a pretty competitive season is brewing in the ILH. The Warriors seem to have it going good on defense. Of course, what would one expect with the likes of Nalani’s younger Warrior patrolling the def backfield?

Will we be seeing you at the TsaikoGate on Friday?

  227. βρΡω808 August 30, 2009 10:08 am

    whitey – FYI….

The AAA’s are starting to bring up (& play) the AA guys – thus some bench/rest time for Kurt. He’s getting about two days off a week now. .280, 60+ rbis, and handling the many, many young pitchers is a pretty solid season IMHO. πŸ˜€

  228. βρΡω808 August 30, 2009 10:12 am

Anyone know the MRI results for Chris Leatigaga? 😯

  229. Da Punchbowl Kid August 30, 2009 10:13 am

    D1-

Sweety works until 6:30 or so. so we’ll be watching at home. We”re gonna try and make a tailgate or two this year.

    LK-
If Sister JOA is drinkin’ beers, she prolly wants to stick around the convent for the game… It sounds like it’d be fun to drink wif da nuns and cheer on da Warriors. Gives new meaning to a “Hail Mary” pass. πŸ˜†

  233. Kekoa August 30, 2009 10:53 am

Top of the morning to ya DPK!

The lads (Sr. @ DHS & Jr. A LHS) live out there in Wahiawa, but opportunity came for the elder to go DHS. Some of the Tsaiko’s have seen his highlite reel, so they know that he’s a pretty quick kid, who has broken some long runs from scrim.

Youngest could have followed but decided to play with his buddies at LHS. Like Al sad he did a pretty good job last nite against the SLS crew.

Their dad (cousin Paul) broke breakfast rolls with the Wessai chapter one morning. Surprisingly, found that he knew Pride, BG, Koakane, and mutual acquaintances of all. Small world indeed.

  234. βρΡω808 August 30, 2009 10:55 am

Kekoa – just admit it…. got so much ‘ohana that you have to spread them out just to keep the island from tipping ova! πŸ˜†

  235. Kekoa August 30, 2009 10:57 am

BG ~ I have a visual of you waking early Monday morning thinking it’s time to go to work!…Relax, no worries! Congratulations for adding another notch to your gun belt.

  236. βρΡω808 August 30, 2009 10:57 am

I guess we’re hoping for a collapse from Hur, Pettersen, AND Redman at the Safeway open to trigger a SEVEN way tie and playoff for MW…. πŸ™„
