OC Sports names Tomey as color analyst

dick-300x225

Former UH head coach Dick Tomey is returning to the television booth as color analyst for OC Sports’ pay-per-view telecasts of Rainbow Warrior football games, the Warrior Beat has learned.

Tomey, 75, succeeds Darnell Arceneaux, who is now quarterbacks coach at Occidental. Tomey will partner with Robert Kekaula, who is the play-by-play announcer.

Tomey was a football analyst during KFVE’s telecasts in 2001 and 2002.

Tomey was UH’s head for 10 seasons, through 1986, compiling a record of 63-46-3. He also was head coach at Arizona for 14 years, and at San Jose State for five years.

Tomey returned to UH as special teams coordinator in 2011. He served as an occasional consultant to UH the past year.

There are expected to be seven PPV telecasts of UH football games this year.

Dr. Greg Chow (no relation to you-know-who) was the orthopedic surgeon who performed the operation on quarterback Sean Schroeder’s back.

It was after the 9/11 attacks that Dr. Chow enlisted with the Army Reserves.

The day after performing Schroeder’s surgery, Dr. Chow was summoned to the Middle East to provide medical help.

Speaking of those who serve the public and this country, happy birthday to Mark Takai.

Yes, HappyBirthday to Mark Takai. This guy really cares about his community and athletics. Not sure if he is still doing it now but for the Pearl City Invitational Swim Meet, Mark, a former swimmer himself, donated the trophys for the kids.

    Good morning gang

I welcome having Coach Tomey in the booth. My hearing isn’t what it used to be so da braddah braddahs in the booth have to speak clearly. The big guy mumble jumbles it for me all the time. I prefer the other big guy, Leahey. But oh well. Tomey and Mumblerooskie it is.

    Welcome back Coach Tomey!!!

  27. Capitolist/WassupDoc July 1, 2013 8:40 am

We have season tickets for the upcoming season so televised home games don’t impact us.

However, will the away games be televised? If so, then we’ll go either Murphy’s or Pinky’s here in Kailua. If they’re not going to be televised live, will ESPN 1420 at least cover them on radio?

  28. 3-Prong July 1, 2013 8:41 am

haka: you’ve captured the essence of Hawaii Athletics in your 25.

  29. jm2375 July 1, 2013 8:43 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

    Welcome back Coach Tomey!

    Happy Birthday to Rep. Takai!

  30. Derek July 1, 2013 8:45 am

Tomey is the best color analyst, insightful, articulate, and can be funny. Myself, I preferred Kanoa Leahey as the play by play announcer. Even Howard Dashefsky is better than Kekaula. Howard does a great job on the OIA games. He’s clear and with added exposure will get even better. Eventually, he might end up being the UH baseball announcer when Robbs retired. I tell you what, at least Dashefsky is easy to listen to than Kekaula.

  31. hossana July 1, 2013 8:55 am

Between Larry Price and Kekauala, I don’t know who’s worse but Price has an excuse as he is only a color analyst so he can pidgeon toe his way through his color analysts even though he is still horrible but Kekaula, well, even when he tries to articulate the situation, it still comes out mumble jumble so instead of concentrating on the game, myself and my friends are on the floor laughing with tears and beer coming out of our faces…….oh, well…..

  32. 808WarriorFan July 1, 2013 8:57 am

Didn’t know that Darnell Arceneaux went to Occidental. I checked out their football website and there is a Hawaii connection…former Kahuku HS Head Coach Doug Semones is now their HC & former Warrior Center Brian Smith is their OC

  33. primo123 July 1, 2013 9:09 am

Good to hear Coach Tomey is back in the game.

    He’s a classy dude.

  34. GoBeavs! July 1, 2013 9:10 am

E komo mai, coach Tomey! looking forward to your insights to the game. you help me better understand the game that i will never experience as a player or coach. GoRainbowWarriors!!! train hard!!!

  35. turfwar July 1, 2013 9:28 am

Congrats to Coach Tomey. It’s perfect for him. Agree with Derek. I enjoy Howard at the mic and he’s just easy to understand. Kekaula has got to go. Don’t understand what he’s saying especially when he gets excited. So in the most important moments, after td’s, interceptions, fumble recoveries, etc. can’t understand what he’s saying. Those are the moments he supposed to take advantage of to make it even more exciting and yet those are the times he fails the most. In fact I would love to see Jim Leahy team with Tomey again. Just got to get him a bigger monitor so he see the players numbers better.

  36. Derek July 1, 2013 9:34 am

You should check out the new $68 million football facility at Oregon. A 25,000 sq. ft. weight room. Each football player’s locker is cost at $30,000 each. Players have individual leather easy chairs, an I-Pod dock, etc. etc. They have multiple 55″ flat screen TVs around, all money put in by Phil Knight. Dang!!!! We all wish Hawaii had that too! Where’s Larry Ellison when we need him!

  37. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 1, 2013 9:54 am

    Pinky’s in Kailua scares me.

  38. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 1, 2013 9:55 am

I actually very much enjoyed Kekaula-Curran on the radio.

  39. HiFl;yer July 1, 2013 9:58 am

    Good morning Rainbow Warrior fans.

    Welcome back to Dick Tomey.

  40. tommui July 1, 2013 10:05 am

OLDIE brought up a point that perhaps Oceanic PPV should have a separate football package for the away games. There are quite a few fans that go to stadium for watch the home games but why should they have to buy the complete PPV package (home and away games).

  41. jimmy the lock July 1, 2013 10:10 am

    Tomey’s back.

SPAM still stay. Hard to believe that SPAM can outsmart a techie.

  42. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 1, 2013 10:21 am

    tommui,

i didn’t realize the public didn’t have that option. for season ticket holders they are allowed to buy the away games only. so its possible, but they might lose out on $.

  43. Warrior Dave July 1, 2013 10:25 am

    #46 Tom Mui,

Oceanic has offerred an away package only for a few years now. Usually $99.

  44. SteveM July 1, 2013 10:27 am

    Good morning everyone!

Good to hear Dick Tomey will be back.

Happy Birthday Rep. Mark Takai !!!

  45. Warrior Dave July 1, 2013 10:27 am

I agree with Derek that Coach Tomey was the best color commentator For UH games. Very insightful observations and informative analysis.

    Good choice Oceanic.

  46. al July 1, 2013 10:45 am

i, too, really enjoy the big guy behind the play by play mic.

robert and tsai are perhaps the only media types out there during the season every day. therefore, they know the in’s and out’s of the program and the personnel like no other.

i enjoy rk’s animated style and you know it is born from his passion for his alma mater and football.

  47. primo123 July 1, 2013 11:00 am

RK’s animated style makes him a better color guy than a play by play guy.

  48. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 1, 2013 11:11 am

    #49,

    totally agree.

  49. Stephen Tsai July 1, 2013 11:14 am

Isn’t Russ bFrancis the owner of Pinky’s?

  50. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 1, 2013 11:17 am

it appears i can read posts in the future…mwahaha 🙂

    *agree with al*

  51. gobows July 1, 2013 11:17 am

thats good to hear oc picked up tomey, now only if 1420 can get rid of that blind jerk on the radio the listening audience could get a quality game called.

  52. gobows July 1, 2013 11:18 am

    #49

i thought russ francis was still doing patriot games in mass.

  53. Stephen Tsai July 1, 2013 11:24 am

Lori Santi said she ran into Russ Francis, and that he owned a bar in Kailua. (Does that count as one or two name drops:)

  54. Chris Hart July 1, 2013 11:32 am

Russ Francis is not the owner of Pinky’s. He and brother Billy own a consulting firm that is running the bar/restaurant.

  55. Chris Hart July 1, 2013 11:33 am

    …unless he bought it recently…

  56. Stephen Tsai July 1, 2013 11:37 am

    Chris Hart:

    Thanks.

  57. Stephen Tsai July 1, 2013 11:38 am

Actually, I have no idea what Pinky’s is. Is that the bar near Taco Bell on Oneawa?

  58. turfwar July 1, 2013 11:40 am

Think Dr. Chow is also the head of Tenri Judo Club in Nuuanu. His wife Robin is running things while he is deployed.

  59. turfwar July 1, 2013 11:42 am

Pretty sure Pinky’s is off of Kalaheo Ave. near Aikahi right over the bridge.

  60. Bowwar July 1, 2013 12:30 pm

Tomey is the guy that put UH on the National Football map…I’m glad to see that he still cares for the UH program despite the many times we’ve slighted him. Dick is probably the best motivational speaker I’ve ever heard…When I was at UH in the 70s I recall his talks at the Student Activity Center with interested students about the program and winning. After listening to his talk, you wanted to walk on the “hot coals” and put on the pads.

I will be listening for his insights during the football games…Instant credibility!

  61. Manoa Mist July 1, 2013 1:00 pm

Sorry to hear about Curveball. Happy Birthday to Mark Takai, a good dude who really cares about his community. And UH sports, too.

    Welcome back, Coach Tomey!

  66. Rich2176 July 1, 2013 1:48 pm

    UH vs UNLV

Got a call and email today from UNLV. I think besides Boyd Gaming & Panda, the Tsaikos have the next largest group attending the bi-annual game.

So, here’s the deal…I probably cannot attend this year due to a golf tournament. (It’s day one of a two day championship for one of the clubs I belong to and I don’t know what time we tee off yet.) Therefore, I’m not sure it will be possible to get there in time for the 5 p.m. kick-off.

NOW…for some of the good news. I’ve already told Tom that I won’t be arranging tix this year. HOWEVER, we are guaranteed Section 107 (50 yard line) from rows 35 and up or Section 108 from rows 30 & up for $45. They may waive the handling fee for us. The other option was the old Tsaiko-Tsection in 116 for $20. 107 & 108 can accommodate around 200 people or so.

MY VOTE IS FOR SECTION 107 & 108 this year. If you have a large group and $45 per ticket is a little steep, then I can certainly secure some tickets in the endzone. It’s just that the Tsaikos will be scattered.

Please go to SteveM’s website with your UNLV ticket requests and Tom & I will coordinate everything. (I’m not sure what kind of communication he’s had with UNLV.) Or, you can always email me at rich2176 at yahoo.

    Cheers Everyone!

john is funny but thats not why he’s there. well, maybe he is, idk.

  74. oldie July 1, 2013 2:09 pm

Slight correction to the PPV that Tom Mui mentioned. As Warrior Dave pointed out, UH does have an away game package. What I thought UH needs is a package that includes all games but the football home games. As a football ticket holder, I can buy the away game package, but I can’t get the volleyball, basketball, and baseball PPV games without paying for the whole package. Why exclude some of your most loyal fans?

  75. Jordanwynn Fan July 1, 2013 2:18 pm

I will be glad to help track ticket requests…but If you wish to request tickets from tom-warriornation or rich2176, I suggest you email them directly and carbon copy me…

In the past we had hundreds of Tsai-ko requests and someone could get lost in rich2176’s swamped mailbox–so most requests were sent to me (because rich2176 has a life and day job) and I posted them at the UH-UNLV game logistics page to keep track for Rich. See this year’s at…

    http://home.roadrunner.com/~smurashi/tsai-kos/away13.html

    So why carbon-copy me?

The advantage of the tix request listed where everyone can see is that the requestor has visual confirmation see his request is known . Rich/tom can look at the page and double check their lists/count. You also can see who else is going and who you will be sitting with… typically tailgates and carpools formed in the past, especially with the hotel name (hence location) known.

The passing of rasu begasu (John Collins) was a great blow to Tsaiko-Vegas activities, but I am glad that Rich and Tom will carry on so that Tsai-kos can sit together at the game.

Just wandering off trail…..Watched part of Shaquille O’Neal All-Star Comedy (?) the other day. How come they can use the N-word twenty times in a sentence and not get any backlash from the Black community or it’s leaders. Why is it okay for a Black person to use it and not anyone else? It appears that using it in demeaning comedy is quite cool if you’re Black, but I don’t get it. Either everyone can say it without prejudice or no one can. IMO…Okay, meandering back on the trail…

OLDIE – in the meeting with the AD, in answering a question that was submitted by a Tsaiko who wasn’t able to be there, he mentioned that they were working on a non-football package for PPV. Of course you have the problem of, say, a softball game going on the same time as a baseball game, and only a few Oceanic (or whoever) camera been available.

However, you do have new technology where the cameras can be controlled by remote control – but again you may have the problem like above except that, while both games could be filmed (taped?), only one game could go on the tubes.

Of course, you could have a TV station that has two different channels, like maybe a 7 and an 8 that could show them at the same time slot but how do you work out the PPV aspect?

Speaking of Larry Ellison as a potential source of donations to UH. A Forbes article equated his recent half billion dollar purchase of Lanai from his 36 Billion Dollar Fortune to a guy with a million dollars buying a used Chevy Impala. So yes, he can afford to help the major university in the state he has invested in, if for nothing other than a show of support and a gesture of goodwill that will surely be returned to him.

Larry: Repeat after me “Let’s Go Bows!”

  96. Tekken007 July 1, 2013 5:25 pm

Kainoa Leahey and Dick Tomey would be the best combination for OC16 TV Broadcast.

  97. John Fitzgerald Byers July 1, 2013 5:32 pm

Wonder why Larry Ellison may never be approached by anyone representing uh athletics? Because there are people in power positions admin in and in high places in the booster sections that will sit back under their mango tree scoffing “ah too much work, like he going donate to us”. Its this attitude that cripples growth at uh and when people paid well to do things like these to seek out dollars and donations sit on their butts with their hair slicked back and high end booster friends backing them up as if they were doing a “good job” we are left with the problems we have now. People like these pretend to be a Larry Ellison-type to all the little people, but these people-never in a million years-have what it takes to be a real winner and real mover and shaker in the real world.

Also can’t wait to see all you guys!

Gotta replace my alternator first. Tired of having to recharge my battery every day or two.

Anyways, will try to be more involved. Just taking longer than anticipated to get all caught up.

Oh yeah, happy birthday, COL Takai! And to all the rest that I’ve missed this year!

    kawika49,

I think many will “recognize” that this “situation” is really quite “normal” course of business in Manoa. 🙁

  102. gobows July 1, 2013 6:30 pm

in the early 80’s we could fill up the moped for less than 50 cents. summer of ’89 gas in kentucky was about 80 cents a gallon, san francisco was also under $1 a gallon.

  103. d1shima July 1, 2013 6:38 pm

In the 70’s no one needed a “Dollar Menu”

…least of all Rainbows and their Dollah Chili!

  104. d1shima July 1, 2013 6:39 pm

Diners’….5 Hamburgers for Dollah (shortly thereafter was 4 fo dollah 😯 )

  105. d1shima July 1, 2013 6:40 pm

…I wondah what dey was doing wit all da extra hamburgahs?

  106. Duh! July 1, 2013 6:47 pm

Lone Gunman, you’re wrong. If they don’t ask Ellison, it’s because if he drops a lot of money, he becomes the power and they lose control. See Oklahoma State University.

  107. Inyoface July 1, 2013 6:52 pm

Should be a break out year for Grimes.

  108. al July 1, 2013 7:15 pm

now that ellison owns an airlines locally it might be tougher to get some money since hawaiian airlines could be our largest corporate sponsor.

  109. Dino July 1, 2013 9:10 pm

coach Tomey had a similar offensive scheme to our current one. hope we can eventually surpass what Tomey did back in the day.

  110. Stephen Tsai July 1, 2013 10:01 pm

Chow and Ben Jay actually have met with Ellison’s people.

  111. Konoman1 July 1, 2013 10:10 pm

When will season tickets go on sale for new people… Can you go to the ticket office or stadium to select seats?

  112. al July 1, 2013 10:34 pm

what a great recruiting tool the isle of lanai would make…summer camp two weeks. one at manele bay and the other at koele lodge.

  113. al July 1, 2013 10:36 pm

“the oracle” would be a great name for the new stadium.

  114. al July 1, 2013 10:38 pm

speaking of stadium…ben jay felt that a 30k venue would suffice.

i still believe that 40k would work best.

  115. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 1, 2013 10:45 pm

30K may be OK if its solely for the use of UH. If we are talking about Pro Bowl etc. then 30K is a joke. Even if there is room for expansion, knowing how long things take to just renovate let alone build, you might as well build to the size you plan to expand to right from the get go.

I don’t see UH taking on the building and operating of a stadium all by themselves, so the 40k-50k range would probably be more useful. The key would be to make it so that utilizing only portions of the stadium (like half) would cut down on operating cost etc.

  116. el burro sabio July 1, 2013 10:58 pm

The first priority for use for any new stadium should be UH football. The only way to ensure that is to build it yourself.

  117. Buffoman July 2, 2013 6:12 am

Wow, I’d call it “cheap thrills” but this guy really does not have much of a life to be annoying. Look at the times of these posts. Must be something his drinking (Red Bull, 5 Hour energy, etc.) So much drive to prove that being an absolute a __hole deserves a head scratch. Sad life, really. Maybe go to church, go on a mission? With this kind of drive, doing good may be a better way of using ones time and energy.

  118. 3-Prong July 2, 2013 6:14 am

Hey I love a good inexpensive round of muni golf like everyone else but the Ala Wai “County Club” folks should consider giving up the site for a new stadium. It’s too perfect a site not to consider. Close to UH, a new bridge or two away from the hotels in Waikiki, plenty of room for parking, and Larry E. won’t have to pay for the land, judt the stadium………food for thought.

  119. 3-Prong July 2, 2013 6:15 am

    Judt= just

  120. 3-Prong July 2, 2013 6:18 am

I know, thee State can offer him free parking for that awesome yacht in Kewalo Basin in exchange for a new stadium. Hehe

  121. Not an Expert July 2, 2013 6:37 am

Luxury Corporate boxes needs be built in Aloha Stadium. The big business and wealthy will be more apt to be part of UH football where they could wine and dine their people and customers.

Have the businesses pay for the construction and ameneties.
