Numbers game
After some thought, Inoke Funaki is not ready to make the change.
Funaki would like to keep jersey No. 11, the number he has worn during his entire UH career.
Nickelback Richard Torres, another Kahuku alum, requested Funaki’s No. 11.
In the spring prospectus, released yesterday, Funaki is listed as No. 2 and Torres as No. 11.
They can’t wear the same number because both might be on the field at the same time on special teams.
“I would like to stay with the same number ’til I finish,” Funaki said in a text message.
Each year, there are dozens of number requests. Associate head coach Rich Miano, who coordinates the requests, said that no matter what, he will not give out three numbers: 14, 15 and 32.
Thomas Kaulukukui’s No. 32 is the only jersey officially retired by the Warriors.
NCAA record holders Tim Chang and Colt Brennan wore Nos. 14 and 15, respectively.
“I’ll never give those out,” Miano said.

There are changes to the third floor (where the football offices are located). New furniture. New trophy case. And a Wall of Fame.

Happy birthday to WarriorMojo and Ian (Ronnie’s son).
There was a blog upgrade last night, which means there might be some glitches today.
#2?? Wait I want #11…
LOL. That’s a good one.
Hi ST,
You always seem to post a new blog whenever I’m about to leave for work…which is about 730 am hawaii time.
woo hoo top 10!
tsai, i thought bradley was gonna compete at RWO?
top 10
I’d give out 14 and 15 with permission of the former wearers
Good Morning Tsaikoville! One more day closer to the weekend.
Blog glitches? What else is new?
glitch
🙂
11?
11
lava,
I think both those guys would say no problem…that’s how those guys roll
Hey can they use 0’s or 00’s as jersey numbers like in basketball? Jus wondering….
lava,
I’d do what some other Universities do: If UH is after a big-time QB recruit, they get Colt’s permission to offer to have the player wear Colt’s number…and they tell the recruit that nobody else has worn the number since Colt left and Colt specifically gave permission for the recruit to wear his number if he chooses UH.
I could see the recruit feeling honored, it would reinforce that a QB could do amazing things like Colt did in the offense, and I’ve seen this work with recruits at other schools.
UH could do the same thing with Chang’s number, but recruits would remember Colt more than Chang because Colt is more recent and was a Heisman finalist.
Richard Torres still an inspiring, unfolding story of a walk-on success.
He maybe undersized but he has the passion of a champion and the grit of a warrior.
Torres did well last year and stood out—keep it kickin brah!
As far as his request is concerned for #11, that is in the province of Rich Miano and he may have problems with the two players being on the field at the same time–perhaps on STs– but he has made it clear that Inoke has priority….best wishes to both Kahuku ballers!
I think that it is GREAT that Utah State’s students approved another $65 per semester raise in their student fees to support Athletics! This will help Utah State upgrade its Athletic programs, and improving the teams at the bottom of the WAC in football is important for UH and the other WAC teams to get more respect.
If UH had this type of student support, JD wouldn’t have any budget problems and the facilities and recruiting budgets could be upgraded to be on par with any non-BCS conference school. Without one hand tied behind their backs, UH would dominate the WAC!
This article has a lot of information about Fresno State’s team. Some points I thought were especially interesting:
Back to work…a lot more to get done before I can go to the Calf Call.
Aloha Kakahiaka
hanahou!
Hack, hack… got major gullah gullahs… right before Lilu’s party… sheesh.
GO, KENNY ESTES!!!
THIS WILL BE A GREAT YEAR FOR YOU!!!!
Mahalo, erryone, for supporting Second Nature. Band Champ will be announced on the CH2 news tonight at 6.
hiho
Talentwise, Pat Hill has been recruiting hard and his QB has been a source of concern for years.
If the bulldawgs connect at QB they could be dangerous.
The problem is Hill’s penchant for banging during practice and that has resulted in a rash of injuries every year….especially on the line.
It is his mantra to be physical and he demands hard-nosed play, even in ST practices.
If he can sustain depth–watchout.
i think i have some glitches that i just can’t get rid of too.
Aloha from the tropical islands of Hawaii on the coconut wireless in digital paradise !!!
Good Morning TsaiKo Ohana !!!!
Bradley is going to compete at both.
I think they want him to push Malcolm Lane.
I wouldn’t put much stock into the depth chart. It doesn’t include the training camp guys.
Then again, the way it’s been, if you exit training camp as a starting offensive lineman, you’ll probably retain that job
In JJ’s first year, there was an o-lineman who appeared to have all of the tools.
He was strong, athletic, agile, long arms. Quite the perfect offensive tackle. He won the job in spring training and then training camp.
And then he struggled in the season opener, and never really played again.
The lights really do make a difference.
Good morning Tsai-ko Ohana!
Eh! Ha’ come Stretch said good morning to us on the pink playground and not here?!
Hala! He not turning “l’dat” eh??
I’m heading up to UH now.
Play nicely.
ST, Good article on Coach Mac’s plans for inspiring middle school kids. I have been really impressed with his dedication to the non-football aspects of being a high profile state employee. He really is an asset to the State.
EEEEEAAAAASSSSSSYYYYYYY MAMA – I posted on the last blog although I don’t think I actually said Good Morning.
Good Morning Tsaikos!!
Buwahahahaa…Ho’ da’ fas eh you come out of da woodworks?? hehehe…nah, nah, nah…I know you’re in the office today…like I said, we can be miserable together..
I’m “working” today too…
Billy Ray Stutzmann should now wear #2

E Kala Mai Stretch!…meant to say concentrate not constipate!
SPR prac is for audition, experimentation and a first-blush look at player personnel and evaluation.
In our case, it will also intro Gordie Shaw and Chris Tormey. Two coaches deep in resume with bold lettering.
It also will give some players an edge on the depth chart and others, the motivation to work hard up until the start of camp.
After that, its dog eat dawg.
The key of course, has to be our O-line.
Coach Shaw will have his work cut out for him and it will be fun watching this Big Ten journeyman whip our much maligned OL into his mold.
I cant recall being as excited in anticipation of one coach, save June Jones and Paul Johnson.
Not saying Rome will be built in a day…but, hopefully, it’s a step towards that day.
Go Warriors!

re-Bobby C interview with Coach Mack on 1420 at 715 am.
The 15 minute interview focused on Coach Mack identifying his outline for Spring Ball and how off season planing is coming together, observing how dedicated the players are working in the off season, talking about the Maui scrimmage and Warrior Bowl, expressing his excitement for his foundation, the upcoming coaches clinic and junior day.
The quick thing that comes to mind as I reflect on last year interviews and this years is that I can see the pieces of the puzzle coming together. Call it self correcting on Coach Mack’s part, but it’s seems he’s on the fast track to correcting the problems of last year’s team and building the foundation for the future.
Off season planning has grown and elevated with Coach Mack saying that his special team’s coach has just come back from Florida after meeting with the special team’s coaches of Florida and Cincinnati in picking up special team’s pointers that might help the Warrior team. Excellent idea, this is good. Bobby C didn’t ask Coach Mack if they’re going to practice more of the special team phases in Spring Ball. But I’m hoping they do. especially the punt return team and kick off return team ( because I think they need a lot of work in this area, and it could be a big difference in the Warriors doing well in the upcoming season). Coach Mack likens the idea of Coach Tormey learning from the best and getting smarter.
He likes the positiveness of OL Coach Shaw saying the coach has identified problems and is working very hard in correcting things.
Of the fifteen practices, Coach Mack wants to identify the guys who’ll run well. And with so many positions opens he likes competition because it makes the players compete hard for positions. He even mentioned that with a lot of talent around it’s not inconceivable of lesser knows overtaking the starters. This I like. I know it’s challenging to filter the best players from second team, but I like the idea of finding the best players forging ahead and surfacing and breaking into the starting line up.
With this Monday the start of Spring practice, Coach Mack collaborated that all the practices are open to the public. When asked if they’ll practice on the new field, he hesitated as said, “maybe if the weather turns bad”. So I don’t think they are planning for practices on the new field.
About the Blaze Soares update: he just passed on what he’s heard from the doctors and he mentioned that he’ll be cleared to play. But won’t be participating in Spring Ball. He goes on to say he has all the measurables, and will be a great addition when he come back to the team.
About the Maui scrimmage, he was enthused because it allows some of his players a chance to see Maui. And vice verse, allow the Maui fans to see the players. With a scrimmage, a autograph session and an after game bar-b-que scheduled at a beach he was excited in bringing the team to Maui. The Coach known, always as one, to praise the sponsers, like McDonalds, and the administrators, like JD, for arranging the game didn’t fail this time either, which I think show a lot of empathy and a quality I like.
With the coaches clinic coming up he likens how it brings the community of coaches together and said that this one will feature Coaches Shaw, Tormey and Tuioti as guest speakers from the Warrior team and Coach Kale Ane from Punahou.
Following the tradition of mainland colleges by introducing coaches clinics and, now, the junior day, is a good thing I see in Coach Mack. And it doesn’t follow his predecessor’s somewhat apathetic approach of not wanting to go out and meeting coaches, meeting recruit’s families in home visits and hosting a junior day. And I think the Coach Mack approach will make a big difference in attracting the homegrown players and others. In a way we’re already seeing some inroads with more and more and more Kahuku HS football players showing up at UH unlike in the previous coaching administration.
Similar to the scheduled bar-b-que outing for the Maui scrimmage, the coach is planning one also for the high school juniors participating in junior day. The plans call for a bar-b-que earlier in the day and then bringing the recruits out to the stadium allowing them to come onto the field and locker room in being up close to the team and coaches.
Closing the interview, Coach Mack talked proudly of his new foundation. Briefly, he said he was happy to leave something for the intermediate aged kids in 7th-9th graders in honoring them with scholarships. At this point one could sense Coach Mack was overwhelmed at the prospect of helping the youngsters of Hawaii.
Without question after listening to this Coach Mack interview…. two thoughts describes the coaches demeanor-empathetic and self correcting. For it’s easy how he integrates his plans by being empathetic, which I think is a great approach. And self correcting by forging ahead by correcting what needs to be fixed. This is the first interview where he talked more in terms of we, us and team more that I, and less about himself or references to himself or JJ which I think is great and falls under the category of self correcting of how how he interacts with the media, too. This is a good improvement, one I like.
With many (maybe) of his players listening to these shows and reading coaches interview the more and more they hear their coaches talking less in rave about singular players, and less of singular possessions or JJ…but instead more on team, team, team is a lot better approach in uniting the players…which IMO, which I think is a lot better contour to follow.
ROYSAN16:
Thanks for the summary on Coach Mack’s interview with BobbyC.
Mack is one heck of a guy!
Mahalo, roysan16! I was having a hard time tuning in to the stream on my Mac.

Thanks for the awesome summary, roysan16! Gotta love what Mack said in that interview. I was talking to a friend the other day, and he was complaining that Mack isn’t worth $1.1 million and that he’s a mediocre coach. Well, maybe the results of the first season weren’t as great as we’d like, but it’s good to see what Mack is doing to secure the future of this program. JJ set up a foundation for this program; Mack is strengthening parts that aren’t that strong. He’s still got some things to work on as he transitions from coordinator to head coach, but I like where things are going.
Garret: I saw that same article on Utah State. Ha, something like that would never happen at UH. They are still balking at $50-75 a semester. I’m trying to convince my friends in ASUH of the virtues of a student athletic fee, but the question I keep on getting is, “Do the students really want it?” I bet you if it were put up on a vote on MyUH or Laulima (the two online student access programs), the vote total wouldn’t even hit 1,000. Heck, I’d be surprised if it hit 100. So no way this will ever go in front of a student vote; support will have to come through ASUH.
I’ve mentioned it on the blog before, and if anybody attending dinner tonight with JD and Kinda Shy wanna mention it, feel free to steal my idea. *hint hint* But instead of asking for a mandatory charge of $50-75 per semester, cut it down to $25/semester. Market that as a bargain — at $5/game right now, if you attend FIVE sporting events in a semester, you break even! $50-75 equates to 10-15 events per semester, which is a bit much for most students.
On top of that, promote the heck out of a student booster system through the Mānoa Maniacs. Make this optional, but get some significant benefits for those who join. Guaranteed seating for football (because we do sometimes sell out the student sections), preferred seating for all sporting events (first choice, pick of assigned seats as if you were a season ticket holder). Discounts from local companies, support from the UH Bookstore, stuff like that. Network with local companies to give internships and other breaks for students who will soon enter the workforce. Team up with ‘Ahahui Koa Ānuenue, Nā Koa, and the other booster clubs to set up a way for student boosters to transition to big-time boosters upon graduation and entering the real world.
Just doing a quick Google search, Florida State has something along these lines (and apparently, they have a student fee as well):
http://affiliate.imarcsgroup.com/seminoleboosters/renderpage.asp?pageid=2454
http://www.seminolestudentboosters.com/
Such an idea might not benefit as much as a $50-75 semester fee, but considering the option of getting ZERO right now, it might be a smart option. Of course, JD and the athletic department could just go to the BOR and propose it anyways, but I’m betting there will be some opposition. Considering rising tuition, increasing textbook costs, and a soon-to-be-implemented $20 U-PASS (bus service) fee, $50-75/semester for something that not a lot of people take advantage of in the first place would get opposition fired up. $25 might be a bit more reasonable, and easier to swallow.

In other news, I thought of chawan_cut when I saw this:
http://www.themarchtomadness.com/2009/03/how-is-your-bracket-looking.html
Did you have standing rib roast defeating bacon as the winner in your NCAA … er, meats bracket? Pulled pork over glazed ham in a 12 over 5! And wow, hanger steak defeating filet mignon, that’s like Cleveland State over Wake Forest! 😛

And one more thing: I’ve been posting links to a series on Smart Football about the run and shoot. If you haven’t seen the previous articles:
http://smartfootball.blogspot.com/search/label/run%20and%20shoot%20series
But today’s article, Part III, is on a key play in the R&S, “Choice.” And it is a great article!
http://smartfootball.blogspot.com/2009/03/run-and-shoot-series-part-3-choice.html
Not only does it go into detail about how the basic setup of Choice, but it really expands to give you an idea of how the R&S works. It breaks down the mentality of the QB and receiver as they read on the fly; it talks in detail about the way receivers need to break in their routes (Ron Lee was adamant about this at a Nā Koa meeting last year, he was very critical of how the receivers ran their routes); and variations of Choice, including the insertions of rubs against man (I love Choice Switch) and the concept of Levels (with film of Timmy Chang’s record-breaker to Jason Rivers against LaTech — the second UH game I ever attended).

What blog problem? Anyways, thanks SteveM for taking care of my morning chore!
Hey Jason…you feeling better? Are you coming to KK?
OH, wait….Good Morning Tsaikos!
I don’t want to get scoldings like Stretch…*waving at Coloma*
what an buttkisser. no tell me you scared of her….
Sounds like there will be a few Tsaikos at the baseball game tonight. Hopefully more can make it. See whoever is at the game tonight.
Two of my posts have been moderated already. The first had three links in it, the second had two. I could have sworn chawan_cut told me MORE than three and you get flagged. Hmm, maybe this is one of those things that they changed?
Rob25: Little bit better, thanks for asking. I actually got fully well after dinner; then I caught a cold from somebody at church this past Sunday. 😀
Oh, and I probably won’t be able to make the big KK. The week after is finals week. Then again, I might be tired of studying by that time, so we’ll play it by ear. 🙂

i have always enjoyed your unique way of expressing your thoughts with such eloquence and refreshing.idioms.
perhaps in your rare times away from your artistry you should be jotting these down and accumulating such for a book collection of your prose.
Roysan16,
You the man braddah. Thanks for the update and I really appreciate your views on the U.H. program. Very insightful.
where do people in san jose go to watch hawaii games? bars?
SteveM,
You can count me in for May 9.
Cough hack… not a good time to get tsick… duboo jigae is us…
Stretch…
I don’t have to kiss her butt…I don’t instigate things! We, strong, opinionated, women have to stick together.
Proof…homey isn’t around because he’s licking his wounds…Coloma is giving him a run for his money.
RE: Coach Mack Academic All-Stars.
I can’t even describe how great of an idea this is and how valuable of a “recruiting” tool this is, not just for future Warriors, but future University of Hawaii students.
(throws a shaka to Coach Mack) dey u go.
Dubu jjigae — my Mom just made some. 🙂
rob25 have you met gg?
roysan……….mahalo for the talk show summary.
Oh yeah, and I love the Academic All-Stars. Anybody in the education field knows kids need to be reached out to early. When I’m talking to my math team kids about my recruiting philosophy (and this is for math team, remember), I’m talking to them about going out to the elementary and middle schools, not just our own high school. Glad to see Mack realizes the same thing.
Okay, I gotta run.
jason….mom picked the wrong day to make soup. i was in the neighborhood yesterday.
Mama C-Ta Rocks and you Roll Robbie!
A little side note: Right about now, a Wessai Chaptah Tsaiko is spreading good cheer with da Pink Side Mafia Moms by bringing some cookies to their Keiki gathering at Blaisdell Park.
So if this were the Aggies’ blog would he just be the USUal?
Kekoa,
I hope he brought some umbrellas or a tent. Otherwise dem cookies going get soggy.
Ashamed to have to toss your cookies at a Mommie event! 😯
i finally got to look at ga’s throwing form on the uh website article.
there is nothing wrong.
throwing a football is akin to throwing a baseball. this i’ve learned from several major league coaches. leo mazzone for one. it is why many baseballers use a football to strengthen and correct mechanics of the throwing motion.
a baseball player if taught proper throwing mechanics would learn that he would need to arrive at the “goal post” position just prior to making a throw/pitch and his throwing hand thumb should be facing in the direct opposite direction of his target.
without going to any more finer details. only a catcher trying to throw out a potential runner attempting to steal a base would “short arm” a throw. same with a qb. only if he needs to get rid of the ball will he short arm it.
this has nothing to do with a “quick release”. thats another story. to me quick release has more to do with making a quick decision as to who and when the qb is throwing it to.
…nuff said
BigWave96744,
Agree wicchu….nice tradition.
Maybe we gotta see how Billy Ray’s “punting” develops first though 😉
heheheh
haha…Hi Rob25!! Mahalo, das a compliment!! hehehe…
And yeah, no need be sked of me…sheesh…gimme some green bottles, and I luv everybody!
d1…..aren’t you singing.
“oh my bags are packed
i’m ready to go………..
i’m leaving on a jet plane….”
LizK,
Be sure to post the Band Champ results here since some of us going be addahknowdawinnah…. 🙄
al…she defers to her husband too much and then asked stupid wahine questions which I would never do…I just ask stupid questions.
hahaha
al,
Not ’til after break bread with curveball at Nancy’s…redeye.
rob25……i see that you are your own woman.
hey, at least we answer yours.
Kama Krab — Gotcha!
Rob25 is not an instigator? I suppose the May 9 thing doesn’t count? Everyone should should know that she put down the hefty deposits and she called the party for Frank25! She’s inviting everyone.
Unike most parties, I will not be bringing a bottle of wine… a bottle of Jagermeister and (diet) Red Bull instead 😀
Coloma….I not sked. We are the type of girls that aren’t scared of much. Hell, we’ve had 11 children between the two of us…not much scaring us after that.
I think that you may have opened yourself up to some juicy comments from some of the “saucier” Tsaiko men.
d1……just for you
modern day version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLqnbEfWkNA
If Colomaohana is like Rob25, I can’t wait to meet her this summer!
Rob25: I know, right?? But, eh…I like juicy…..COMMENTS! Comments, I meant….
And….11 keiki…yup…they can take on the naught Tsai-ko’s….fo’ sho!
hahaha!!
Al ~ Dat Wahine sound like “Minnie Mouse” on steroids. Nevah heard of her before dats why, but kinda cutsie style about her.
Any Chance Miah Ostrowski cracks the two deep at slot? I think he can certainly outplay Jon Medeiros.
Love that Coach Mack is promoting the success of middle schoolers. Success in college really does start at the elementary & middle school years. You Da Man, Coach Mack!
roysan16,
Mahalo for the interview recap.
I might be at the BaseBows game tonight. My nephew is home from UH-Hilo, and he’s redshirting on their baseball team this year. Great pitcher out of Waipahu, and he can hit, too. Maybe he’ll go with me to the game.
D-1 ~ Make sure you make a mental checklist of your emergency water landing procedures in case da pilot gotta set it down. You nevah know now days! Stay safe…and don’t count on da HS Ferry coming to your rescue.
Letterman says da Hudson river is now listed as the worst airport in the U.S. and bottom of the list for lost luggage at 100%.
kekoa….the warrior beat is not only about football. one can expand their musical appreciation her too.
her = here
ah, you know what i meant.
Duffer ~ What’s your Maui airport rating? Since I not coming on da SF, I gotta check your safety record.
Also, what da 411 on da BBQ at da beach aftah da game?
Al ~ Eh…no go too far ovah da top on me now bro!
Get too high brow on me, and you’ll lose me aftah the intermission, and before the fat lady sings! LOL!

Perfect Sensei!…I like the “from the heart” feel she gives the song.
Tell you what…when you come to the Frank 25 KK, I’ll team up with my betrothed to duet this number for you and da Boss.
Note to SteveM: Log us in for that *Jet Plane* number.
al,
That’s quite a small venue. By my reckoning seating only for one. I wonder if there’s a cover charge? 😆
Kekoa,
Roger! Will check undah da seat for my two party balloons in case we go plunnn-ging into da ray-jeeng surf!
Thanks for the segue, Kekoa. There have been concerns expressed about the overloaded song queue at big Krazy Karaoke calls. Stretch and I have some thoughts on how we might shorten the queue and even out the song distribution genres.
Didn’t want to say anything specific until we can confer with and get approval from PARTY HOSTESS Rob25 first. 🙂
kekoa….no joke.
as it is, on may 9th, which i have also conveyed to rob25, that my mother’s 88th bday was to be celebrated at one local pake eatery.
perhaps you and the misses can debut at the tailgate.
here’s one version that you may like and it is equipped with the lyrics.

a live webcam might help solve the issue 😯 😈 😆
So, what I got out of Post No. 67 is that Jason recruits.
al,
Wat?!? seems like you stay kinda stuck on da LuaLady!
al,
Oh! the wasted lives and shattered dreams on the playgrounds of Salt Lake! (eh! dey get, or wat?)
“Wat? You no can recite the multiplication table up to 9’s yet? You call yourself a 2nd Grader?!?! How we supposed to compete in Math League? Beat it! Next!”
NauPauLunChauWah…..
😳
Sorry….Stephen, not al.
bbfn
Gotta watch out fo dat guy. Jason can be sneaky… just as long as he is in compliance with regulations.
ST,
Sorry for the question, but I never won anything before hahahaha…
Are the baseball tickets under my name or my blog handle?
Thanks,
Kazz
oops.
sorry d1.

Al — unless mom is partying until midnight, you can always stop by with da Boss… and I was mostly kidding about you having to pay in advance along with a $50 non-refundable default deposit for Karaoke Call RSVPs. 👿 😆
For practice: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Rdgv2baajc0
Hey, Kazz!
d1, re: #96: No forget to “tie them with strings and fasten them to your arms”
recruiting…..math team?
ummm. so is the ncaa involved and if so what kind of sanctions are imposed?
hmmmm.
okay, no trig calculator for two years and suspension from participating in the math bowl.
or
no slide rule or abacus. oh, that would be for the chinese team.
scholarships reduced for poor gpa’s below 3.7. calling it a poor gpr instead.
Uh oh…. Colomaohana…. shuzzzz got some splainin’ to do…. 😆
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO WARRIORMOJO AND IAN!!!
So what Mojo, go celebrate at O’Tooles? 😈
happy birthday mr. warriormojo!
and ian boy.
Hey, guess what?
My photos are automatically downsized.
Al ~ That was a sad reminder of John Denver. I happened to be playing in a golf tourney at Spyglass the day he crashed his private plane into the waters outside of Monterey Bay. We could see the rescue effort just off shore, but had no idea it was John until we saw it on the news that night.
so are those lower cabinets made of koa veneers or walnut contact paper?
they should ask one tsaiko by the name of ajoe to go in do some nice three dimensional graphics to “lift up the walls”.
kekoa…..were you stationed at ford ord back then?
i had a lot of “fun” at the united states army’s largest sandbox.
so we were watching the ncaa’s…..and the #2 says that the star player for the kentucky wildcats is jodie meeks.
the name ring a bell, he states.
at the youthful age of 9, #2 played against this jodie meeks in charles city, iowa in CABA 9 yr old world series.
…and look at him now!
That’s the waiting area.
There’s a big sign that says: No media allowed beyond this point.
I always laugh when I pass by that sign.
Happy Birthday to Warriormojo and Ian .
Esme and wooooosh
Ok. Mr. Torres. Please repect your elders. Take another # please.
Funaki has the ability to really turn some confuesed defense’v heads as an option RB/slot.
I’m excited.
Time to get back to an exciting Offense. They sell tickets.
An exciting defense wins games & titles.
Happy Bday Warrior Mojo and Ian!
Jim and I are looking forward to meeting the Lo Cal Tsaikos in about 30 minutes.
Rich, thanks for making the arrangements.
Garrett, thanks for finishing your paper in time for the cattle call.
Colomaohana, do I know you?
Jason #51: Ground Chuck over T-Bone steak?
BLASPHEMY!!!!
Bwahahaha!!!!!!!! 👿 😈
2nd grade? Psh, you gotta know your multiplication table up to nine when you are four years old! 😉
Oh yeah, and Happy Birthday to WarriorMojo, Ian, and everybody else whom I missed the past few days. I’m sorry, it’s prime recruiting season and I forget a lot of those reminders. 😉
ST- #113 – They are downsized but also no longer links so we can’t see bigger versions when we click.
Kinda Shy – hugs to erryone!
cough, hack, ginger tea…
Kinda Shy: Dunno…hmmmmm..you know Kazz?
LizKauai: Actually, we had the dubu jjigae yesterday. And the ginger tea. 😀
Colomaohana: Kinda Shy knows everyone here! She’s really not that shy … 😀
Jason, are you guys sick too?
That is one sexy lookin display case!
Actually I am the one who is kinda shy. Of the times Kinda Shy and JD came to some blog functions I was too hesitant to introduce myself.
Thanks Jason…hahahahaah!! Okay….in that case:
Hi Kinda Shy, I’m Colomaohana from Esme’s pink side….. ;-P
I’m sick, Liz. Getting over it, though. I’m blessed — when I get sick, I don’t get too sick. But yeah, that bug is going around right now. Everyone seems to be sick. Doesn’t help that everyone is traveling for spring break, either.
I’m guessing Colomaohana still doesn’t know who Kinda Shy is?
Speaking of Kinda Shy and moms, here’s a story dealing with one that may be of interest to the other. *hint* 😀
http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2008/Feb/13/il/hawaii802130302.html
Justin where have you seen Miah out play John Mederios ? Miah needs to hit the weight room HARD and bulk up. 2 deep this season???? He’s a greyshirt frosh so he plenty more years to first crack the 3 deep.
RE: Trophy Case.
Hey! One trophy is missing! Where is the “Golden Screwdriver?” 😆
Seriously though, is that case meant for football only? I see some other trophies that don’t look like football trophies (i.e. top two corner trophies, they look like WAC tourney trophies).
Kinda Shy,
Howzit Aunty, too bad cannot meet up with you, Uncle Jim and the LoCal crew tonight. Just got off work but if I try drive up there with the traffic I would be seeing you guys around 9 laddat. Anyway, hope you guys have a nice dinner with the gang, maybe next time can wala’au with you guys.
Aunty Ronnie,
Gotta have annodah CC soon before I head off to the Land of Sand and moa Sand. They went change plans so I should hele around Mayish time frame. Anyway, guys have fun tonight…
Okay, thanks Kazz!
So, if I tell Kinda Shy: “Sing a praise to the alma mater…”
She says…..
For some reason this reminds me of a story Dan Robinson told about his first experience with the pidgin language.
Robinson recalls: “Hawaii was interesting because one of our wide receivers came up to me asking if I wanted to throw the ball around when I had the time. I said, ‘sure, what time?’ Then he said something about some trees and turtles (3:30 – tree turtles in pidgin slang)…” 😆
Oh Dan Robinson… 😆
Colomaohana,
Pssst… (whispers) try check your blog handle name before posting… 😉
Kazz, stop spamming! Dang split personality … 😉
Happy Bifday to Moj – he has the nicest, sweetest wife – lucky guy!
Eh I stay looking over the spring prospectus and was thinking how the heck Jake Heun going look if he wear numbah 5???
Also “JB” Bryant is listed as a Sophomore, is this true he get 3 moa years???
Plus get Quentin Beaver wearing numbah 88, hmm…is he the bulldozing tight-end on goal line situations, or the H-Back so to speak???
Jason,
I think I have my mutliple personalities in order for now as it’s not football season yet.
When “Mooseknuckle Mike” appears on the blog, then someone has turned on the “Bat-s**t Signal”. 😈
Pauoa Boy,
Quinten Beaver is just “DA TUNDA”. 🙂
Kazz,
Fo reals ah, buggah hit you and all you hear instead of “Da Crackle of Da Sky”, is “Da Crackle of Da Bones”
Kazz & PB
Is this the season that Coach Mack will “Stir it up” with the veterans?
The WAC might be in for a nice surprise
Kazz, you at work today?
HAPPY BIRTHDAY WARRIORMOJO !!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY IAN !!!
Aren’t “we” all? 😆
Unless your department is the BEST department company-wide and then I am jealous.
I’m not working…time for a nap before I go to the BB game?
You going Kazz?
Happy Birthday WarriorMojo and Ian!
something for WM

New diggs look good.
Maverick,
Now that Greg Alexander and the receivers have a season behind them we should see more sugar in the Hawaiian Punch this season on the offensive side. Garrans Coach Mack and Coach Ron going start adding some flavor to the mix. The Defense get planny talented Hitmen, just a matter of dem playing disciplined ball sticking to their assignments and responsibilities and not giving up the big play.
Hmm. The engagement I was to participate in tonight was cancelled. I wonder if I should go to the UH baseball game. Anybody else going? 🙂
Hauoli Lahanau Mojo!!!
Hawaiian PUNCH indeed ( Trademarked).
Tanks’ PB
Au’ryte Fo Sho…
Rob25,
Going fo shua. This is the only game I can make this weekend because the schedule is so odd. I could tomorrow also, but the Wahine are playing Nevada across the way and they’re starting home WAC play so I gotta make noise for them hahahahahahahaha…
See you at Murakami Stadium! I’ll be there late as I finish at 7pm and should be at Manoa by 7:20-ish.
Al ~ Yep! I was a D.I. at Ft. Ord back in the sixties. So you might have been one of the lucky troopers we ran to the beach rifle ranges every day, huh? You had a wonderful time there, I’m sure!
We got to play Spy Glass and Pebble Beach because we voluteered to pull course Marshall duty at the old Crosby Clam Bake, and later the ATT&T Golf Classic back in the day. Hold up the ‘Quiet Please’ signs, and then quietly remove people who didn’t want to be quiet. It was fun tho…great parties afterwards.
John Denver crashed his light plane the day before my birthday in 1997. This is nearly 10 years after I had retired from active duty. I remember how stunned everyone in Monterey felt that whole week about his untimely death. Rocky Mountain High still rings in my ears from hearing it played a thousand times on the radio that week.
Jason,
You can only sit by me and Rob25 if you promise to heckle the other team until their ears bleed.
😆
Kazz: Forget that, I’m going to sit someplace where I can get me a foul ball! Even my oldest niece has one!
(Granted, that was at Aloha Stadium when there were three of us in the stands for a hot summer game. I let her and the other boy run around for those balls.) 😀
Happy Birthday to the Warrior Mojo Man.
Dea you go KAZZ!
Lose money Jason…get on the heckling bandwagon!
bigwave….as usual i am in agreement with your assessment. jon medeiros will not disappoint. he may be slower than his teammates, but, he makes up for it with great hands, good routes, and the toughness to go across the middle with no fear. oh, and he can block.
actually, we did lose two starting slots last year and with salas contemplating a move to the slotback position (where he has a better shot at the next level) we could actually be looking at 3 new guys in this dept. why even malcolm lane will have serious competition.
i think that somewhere down the line by the third game if not sooner, mr. bradley will become a starting wr. afterall, i did target him as my early impact player. aaron brown another along with those two rb’s.
Okay fo’ real gotta take a short nap!
You are on the clock Koakane!
IDK why, but I don’t heckle too much at baseball games. I heckle a lot at all the other events, but not baseball/softball. It’s kinda weird.
Every so often, though, I’ll yell at the umps. Can’t help but do that. 😀
I think the hardest sports to heckle in are men and women’s volleyball and softball.
It would just seem out of place… Unless you are Matt Rawson’s brother of course.
Happy birfday, Ian & WarriorMojo!
evening gang!
Happy Birthday WarriorMojo & Ian!
WM – thanks for the journey video last night
Ian – getting another tat for your bday?
d1 – tower of power, one of my all time favs, i’d put it on my ipod but gotta get one first 🙂
Kekoa/Al – Ft. Ord, was stationed their in the late 60’s
Kazz – da softballers get some good cheers
Good evening everyone!
Happy B-Day to Ian and Warriormojo!
Kekoa: Brie and I will be at Nancy’s this Sunday..
al, you might wanna close your eyes and cover your ears with what I’m about to say:
DARN MISSOURI!!!!! Dey messin up my brackets li’dat.
hmmmm, everybody must be watching duke villanova
CRW – whaaat?
HAPPY BIRTHDAY IAN!
Did mom get that car yet?
duffer – howzit, happy belated bday to the kid, btw hows the research w/ whitey going?
CRW – other game might throw off some brackets too
Loa
Whitey’s on a “special” undercover mission. I’m sworn to secrecy! 🙂
Loa – Yep. But I get Memphis in my Final Four, so that game is causing me more damage than should ‘Nova move on. Either way looks like I’m not gonna win. 👿
No need watch basketball already.
Here it is:
Villanova, Arizona, Oklahoma, and UConn in the FINAL FOUR.
Villanova is the 2009 NCAA Basketball Champions.
Thank you.
duffer – copy that, the secret is safe here, hehe
CRW – so who you get on the eastside? Pitt?
Loa – Yep. You got someone else?
I just hope the best are on the field. Just because Jon is capable of meeting the standards to play SB doesn’t mean he should automatically start.
It is just a spring roster, not even with the ending spring roster either. When all is said in done I think Ryan Henry or another talented SB will overtake that position. We are to talented at that position to play the guys with “experience” ahead of the guys with exceptional talent. All my opinion of course.
Let the best play! Not the guys who have been in the program the longest…….
CRW – same, memphis making a run
Man Memphis plays physical….now if they could only hit their free throws…..
go big 12-Missouri, Oklahoma and Kansas….
looks like 2 number 2 seeds going down for the count- Memphis done, and Duke down by 21
hahahahahahahaha…
mwhahahahaha.. what’d I say….
VILLANOVA, ARIZONA, UCONN, AND OKLAHOMA!!!
Why Bother from Maui is the new Band Champ. Das Nalani’s pahtnah’s nephew.
Kazz, did someone have a nice bracket set up???? ❓ 😆
ok… back to my gimchi jigae and ginger tea… cough, hack…
Fun time tonight at the LoCal Calf Call. I can’t understand why it took me 2 1/2 hours to travel 47 miles and Garret beat me from San Diego. Hmmmm….
Anyway, it was great to see JD and Kinda Shy on “vacation”. They have so much energy. Thanks to Ronnie for finding a terrific venue for us to chill at. Plenty of pupu’s and adult beverages.
Also attending were Terry & Betsy Brennan, Ronnie, Mr. & Mrs. BG, UKU, Brian (lost hawaiian?), Garret, Ed, and lurker Layton, also from San Diego.
It’s amazing what this blog has done in terms of connecting people and creating life-long friendships. I took a few pictures and will forward them to SteveM when time permits.
Forgot to mention, it only took me 50 minutes to get back home. Note to self: Don’t travel anywhere far in L.A. rush hour…LOL…
I’d like to echo Rich’s praise for the place that Ronnie chose! That was a great place for our meeting and gave us a chance to talk story with everybody.
It was great to see the Calf Call group again, to meet lurker Layton, and to get to talk with JD and Kinda Shy. Everybody is so interesting and nice, I stayed well past the time I had planned and hated to leave…kind of like all Calf Calls and Cattle Calls.
I’m glad that what is said at the CC stays at the CC, as I talked quite openly about my business. It was nice to be able to vent a little about work without boring the blog with my rants.
OOPS….The San Diego Tsaiko was Lyndon, not Layton. BTW, thanks so much for the nightcap!!
It was great to get to meet Mr. and Mrs. Brennan and to talk a little with them about past seasons. I’m glad that they are still supporting UH sports, as we are all still supporting Colt! After meeting them, it is great to get to post this positive article about Colt. This article says that Colt has a shot at the backup QB this season, which would be great! Very few NFL starting QBs make it through the season without getting injured, most #2 QBs get a fair amount of playing time.
Rich,
Traffic was amazing on my drive back and I got home in less than an hour!
FWIW, Garret had some interesting stories…I’m liking the one he mentioned to me about the film business in India….LOL…
Looks like the NFL will add another 1 or 2 regular season games soon, cutting down on the preseason games. They also will add 2 more playoff teams.
Thanks to all who showed up at the LoCal this evening. Jim and I had fun meeting you all and hope to see you again sometime. Everyone is so nice and down to earth…and good fun!
Pauoa Boy–Sorry you couldn’t make it. Hope to meet you sometime soon.
LizKauai– Hope you feel better soon.
Jason–I really don’t know many people on this blog..and how did you find that article?
Ronnie–You crack me up! I would love to see you at a UH game…at Fresno State! BTW, we are definitely going to the IC-Irvine match tomorrow night with Tim Lyons (former UH QB in the early 80’s) and family. Hope you can come. Call me if you’re planning to go.
Kazz–Don’t be so shy, say hi next time! My response to the alma mater is “huh?” So maybe I don’t know Colomaohana after all…
Jason–
Rich,
I think that JD and Kinda Shy had the most interesting stories! I look forward to the next time I get to talk with them…
Kinda Shy mentioned that she liked the free play links, but to the others who don’t like them please ignore my next 5 posts.
Research has found that a quick x-ray snapshot of a person’s knee is a very reliable way to identify them, and this biometric technique is much more resistant to spoofing because it is hard to spoof the inside of a knee like they do with artificial fingerprints or contact lenses.
Robot developers are trying to get a team of robots to be good enough to beat the best human soccer teams.
Scientists debate how to deflect asteroids if they are going to hit the Earth.
New York man is accused of stashing his dead 98-year-old mother in a freezer so that he could continue to cash her Social Security checks.
Russians apparently do not like the iPhone and the poor sales has prompted Russian carriers to demand their contracts with Apple be renegotiated.
Free play links pau.
Garret – I think it’s crazy how greedy the NFL (No Fun League) continues to be. All these extra games mean additional stadium and TV revenue. The latter, to help pay the insane contracts teams give to unproven rookies. (Al Davis, does the name JaMarcus Russell ring a bell?) A stock broker once told me GREED KILLS…
Kinda Shy,
I hope that the kids had fun at Disneyland!
Kazz,
You’ve been hoping for applications for your BlackBerry Storm…BlackBerry’s version of an App Store will open on Wednesday.
Rich,
Actually, this time I think the NFL is responding to fan complaints. The NFL forces season ticket holders to pay the same price for preseason games that they pay for regular season games. Fans have been complaining about this for decades. So, the NFL will take away 1 or 2 preseason games and make them regular season games. The fan will pay the same but they will at least get meaningful games.
Of course, the NFL could charge less for preseason games if they really cared about their fans…but they are way too greedy for that!
The big drawback for adding games is that the wear and tear of the season will be even worse for starters, as they get to sit out much of the preseason.
If the NFL goes to 17 regular-season games and has each team play at a neutral site, I would love for a game to be played at Aloha Stadium! I could imagine a 49ers-Raiders game would sell out, and the fans flying in for the game would boost Hawaii’s economy.
Garret,
I thought you and Ronnie had really interesting stories. I wish I had more time to talk to the rest of the group.
Special thanks to all of you who took precious time out of your day to talk story with us. Special thanks to Brian who drove all the way from Victorville. Wow, we’re impressed!
I think I’m about to crash…all the sleep I lost over the past week is finally catching up to me. I hope I was coherent at the Calf Call.
http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/03/26/dallas-police-officer-makes-death-even-worse/
The incident was captured on a 16-minute video (Part 1 and Part 2), courtesy of police officer’s Powell’s in-dash video recorder.(on YouTube, 350 replies)
Reading the NY Times story (65 replies) of how a police office detained NFL player Ryan Moats outside a Dallas Hospital’s emergency room. In full view of the hospital the police officer ignored the pleas and urgency of the situation facing the driver (Ryan Moats), specifically that the motorists mother-in-law was dying. And instead detained Ryan Moats from entering the hospital with the officer instead arguing vociferously that the motorists had ran a red light near the hospital. . The tapes show 12 minutes of the officer jawing with the Ryan Moats. And not once the officer realizing or considering the gravity of the situation or how gravely ill that Ryan Moat’s mother-in-law was. Or even Ryan Moats pleas, “My mother-in-law is dying”.Not until a nurse came outside to speak with the officer was the situation expedited.
This is very sad. And I was glad to see that earlier on in the video, two other occupants of the car had dashed into the hospital instead of waiting for the commands of the officer. In was later learned that their mother had passed as the daughters were in route.
On another site, the police chief of Dallas commended the actions of the motorists, Ryan Moats. In public opinion, and rightly so, the actions of the police officer are being scrutinized and vilified in message boards.
Note to self. After watching the 2 videos (16 mins) it’s best never to exacerbate the situation with any police officer or for that matter any stranger that you have a confrontation with on the roadways because there’s so many nuts out there. And after watching the videos it reinforces my thinking.
Coastal Carolina makes it a no hit, no run game…ouch!
Our family is going to tomorrow’s game, thanks to J’s baseball coach, hope the ‘bows can scratch out at least a few hits/runs.
Hope the Addahknows are enjoying goin’ back to the 80’s with Journey tonight.
Happy B-day Warrior Mojo and Ian
That pitcher for Coastal Carolina was something else. Good velocity, good movement. Got wild at times, but always settled down. Just gotta tip your hat to him.
Didn’t sit with all the Tsai-kos, but I ran into them after the game. Also saw chawan_cut and lakerj32 sitting near me. Thanks to koakane for the ride.
And despite the loss, Kramer didn’t pitch too bad. Except for that one bad inning, he was pretty solid. Clearly didn’t have as live an arm as the opposing pitcher, but his pitches were moving and hitting the corners well. When runners got on, though, Coastal Carolina was able to small ball their guys to manufacture runs. The good teams are able to do that, and you could tell this is a good team.
Happy Birthday Ian and Warrior Mojo!
Kinda Shy: I kid you not, the first link you get when you Google your name is that HA link. 😀
Speaking of Google, here’s another nice link I found:
http://www.hawaii.edu/centennial/valentinesDonovan.html
Aww! Okay, that’s enough links — I don’t want to be branded a stalker. 😛
Howzit errybody! End of a long day. Catching up w/ da blog. tired, tink i’ll go nene now. oyasumina-tsai.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Okay, that makes THREE times today that my posts have been flagged for moderation. Can you not post a link anymore? Geez!
Kinda Shy: I kid you not, the first link you get when you Google your name is that HA link.
Speaking of Google, here’s another story I found. I can’t link to it, cause the blog hates me, but here’s the blurb:
In 1985, as new staff members, Jim, Tracy, and other new staff members were introduced to the Athletic Department community at the beginning of term by then Athletic Director Stan Sheriff. Over the next three years, they talked to one another as colleagues. In 1988, Jim was giving a tour of the facilities to potential sponsors from Kodak when Tracy came by to deliver something. Jim told the Kodak executives, “I’m going to marry that girl one day.” Up to that point Jim and Tracy had not even dated. Less than one year later they were married with all the Kodak executives in attendance.
Aww! Okay, that’s enough links — I don’t want to be branded a stalker. 😀
Why Jason, you little storyteller…there’s a lesson in there somewhere for you ya know!
Good time to remind everyone about:
~ Breakfast at Nancy’s with curveball & crew.
~ This Sunday @ 09:00 AM until noon.
~ Remembrance of Kristin at White Plains Beach to follow @ 1:00 PM.

jason,
their pitcher was consistent. our guys were getting contact, its just that they hit it straight to their players. got good hits too. some deep, just not deep enough. their outfielders were lined up in the right spots.
hopefully our guys will get fired up over this no hitter and take it to their pitchers tomorrow.

At first I was like, “Who’s this Ryan Davidson?” Then I did a Google search. Wow is all I have to say.
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/allthingstrojan/2009/02/ryan-davidson.html
Ryan Davidson had been battling cancer for 9 1/2 years. He lost the battle on his 16th birthday but will be remembered around USC for winning everybody’s heart.
For the last four seasons, Davidson would visit USC’s locker room even though he lived in Wisconsin. He served as an honorary team captain and developed a close relationship with several players, notably Matt Leinart — who would later host the Davidson family at Arizona Cardinals games and at his home in Arizona.
chawan_cut: He was kinda wild earlier in the game, before you arrived. He really settled down as the game got along. Your point about the defense is a good one, too. Morford lined some shots to right, but the defense made good plays.

He served as an honorary team captain and developed a close relationship with several players, notably Matt Leinart — who would later host the Davidson family at Arizona Cardinals games and at his home in Arizona.
Happy Birthday to Warrior Mojo! Liz, hope you feel better quickly!
Kekoa, I think we know the same people who were at Ft. Ord!
You’re a good but lazy blogger.
Happy Birthday Ian!
Happy Birthday Warrior Mojo! Saw you sitting in your choice seat at Journey concert.
jason and chawan dat carolina team is solid. pitching is backed up by outstanding players. some of UH hits would have fallen in for base hits but the players really move to the ball as soon as the ball is off the bat. I haven’t seen a team like this one in ages. they are big and quick. not impressed with their hitting but as an overall team they are pretty good.
roysan16,
Thank you very, very much for your recap of the interview with Coach Mac! That is something that many others, especially those on the mainland, were not able to listen to and it contained a lot of information. I agree that Mac is doing things the right way and that he is such a good man.
It was a lot of work for you to type all of that up, but it was appreciated!
JD was able to answer a question that I had been wondering about for quite some time, and he’s definitely the expert in that area. That information was very useful to me and hopefully I get to help UH in the future…I would say more but I explained to Kinda Shy and Ronnie how I’m getting superstitious about certain things.
