Numbers game

Head coach Norm Chow is using the next few days to craft the roster for training camp, which opens Aug. 1.

The NCAA caps training-camp rosters at 105 players. Chow said he would like to have 102 players in camp. He said he will add eight to 10 more players on Aug. 22, the first day of UH’s fall semester, when rosters are permitted to expand.

The tentative roster includes wide receiver Pi‘i Minns, who also is a member of the UH basketball team.

The Warriors still have a couple of scholarships available.

It’s always a good thing for a player to have his picture in the bio section. There’s a nice picture of former UH defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga, although on the Bengals’ roster his first name is misspelled “Vaughan.”

Former UH offensive lineman Austin Hansen should learn soon whether he will be invited to the Philadelphia Eagles’ upcoming OTA. Hansen had a tryout at the Eagles’ rookie mini-camp this past weekend.

I checked out the Orlando Sentinel’s College Football Countdown and they had Fresno State at 109 out of 120 teams. With first-year head coach Tim DeRuyter, who has proven to change the defense in one year with his base 3-4 defense, it would seem that they might be a surprise this season even tho they lost some keys players on that side of the ball. They return Derek Carr and Robbie Rouse on offense who are capable of putting up some sick numbers. The Warriors might be in for a fight considering they play them on the Bulldog’s turf. Should be one of the more interesting games this season as two first-year head coaches faceoff.

So far, the teams the Warriors will face this season that are outside of the top 100 are:

    New Mexico (120) Home

    UNLV (118) Home

    Fresno State (109) Away

    Colorado State (105) Away

  17. Shoko May 14, 2012 8:40 am

    ahouse…twirling???

it is a more manly sport that young tsai is proficient at, the samoan fire knife dance using the nifo’oti is definitely not twirling as using a baton.

  28. HawaiiMongoose May 14, 2012 11:04 am

In other news… the Big West board of directors is meeting in LA today. It should interesting to see whether Boise State gets an invitation to join the conference. Last week the Idaho Statesman reported that the directors were planning to have a general discussion about Big West expansion but no specific proposals were on the table. That could have changed in the past few days.

  29. Shoko May 14, 2012 11:22 am

Hmm, isn’t that always the case tho? Whenever they have a board meeting, expansion is always a topic thats on the list.

Board president: Okay, next on the list is expansion. What say you?

    Board of Directors: Nay…nay…nay…nay….nay etc..

Board President: Okay, it’s unanimous. Next on the list is where to have lunch.

Board of Directors: Hooters! Hooters! Hooters!! 😉

Why are Mondays so long? They are worst than Fridays!

    Last one is from Maui.

  38. A-House May 14, 2012 1:29 pm

    al:

you read right – “twirling” cause that’s excactly what the knife dancers do – twirl the whatever (nifo’oti) or swing it.

  39. Stephen Tsai May 14, 2012 1:53 pm

    A-House

    Not-return-to-home players.

But I know UH has been contacted by two players who are transferring from BCS schools.

  40. cheepono May 14, 2012 2:18 pm

    mannnnn #40 is a teasah.

  41. WarriorNY May 14, 2012 2:18 pm

    @40,

what positions? Any chance of them playing this year?

  42. Stephen Tsai May 14, 2012 2:22 pm

I think one can play this year. Not sure about the other.

UH is checking both out this week.

  43. Stephen Tsai May 14, 2012 2:23 pm

UH is holding two scholarships for them.

  44. cheepono May 14, 2012 2:39 pm

is one of the two kapua sai? he’d be eligible for this year…

  45. Shadow May 14, 2012 2:47 pm

Football recruiting is in good hands . . . Anyone know how the women’s basketball recruiting is going? Haven’t seen or heard too much since the new coach was announced.

  46. Abunai May 14, 2012 3:02 pm

#45 If the older Sai does his class work he can play this year.

  47. Abunai May 14, 2012 3:06 pm

    St stop being a tease!!

  48. Shadow May 14, 2012 3:19 pm

I think ST is referring to 2 non-homegrown players (I.e., not Kiha Sai) from BCS schools. If that’s the case, the more the merrier . . .

  49. Shadow May 14, 2012 3:24 pm

Correction – I meant the older.

  50. Shadow May 14, 2012 3:25 pm

    The older Sai, Kapua.

  53. wafan May 14, 2012 4:19 pm

    Two more transfers.

Interesting. Must be good ones if scholarships are being held for them.

  54. Slugger May 14, 2012 4:30 pm

Curiouser, and curiouser… Who might be those potential transfers…

  55. cheepono May 14, 2012 4:34 pm

    thanks shadow. overlooked that.

even more interesting… to see non-hawaii boys looking to transfer here.

  56. kapakahi May 14, 2012 4:44 pm

It truly is a numbers game…..where “holding” a football scholarship probably more accurately translates to “freeing up” a football scholarship from a now former player.

It’s just the reality of roster changes under a new coaching staff. Happened with JJ then Mack, and now happening with Chow too.

Some players have left and will leave the team……while new players have and will join the team.

  57. Stephen Tsai May 14, 2012 5:02 pm

The two guys are not Sai or Robinson. It’s two from BCS schools who contacted several schools, including UH. The coaches are following up. UH always had a few scholarships. Either they go to transfers or walkons.

  58. wafan May 14, 2012 5:07 pm

Thanks for the clarification Mr. Tsai.

  59. whitey May 14, 2012 5:07 pm

kinda took a refresher on who will be joining da warriors for the fall and you don’t need to say “where’s the beef” cause “da warriors’ get beef”. most noticeable is that the o line is going to get a huge boost.

  61. al May 14, 2012 5:52 pm

  75. whitey May 14, 2012 7:39 pm

good move by usc to publicize the haiti trip for Barkley. this should help him get into the senior class award for football this season.

  76. Ipu Man May 14, 2012 7:54 pm

The more awards and publicity for Barkley, the better.

Like Heisman winner Ty Detmer, they may think they are better than lowly UH…

And then—Bam! Oh how pride can fall.

    Rams quotes on Aaron Brown

    http://www.stlouisrams.com/news-and-events/article-1/Rookie-Profile-LB-Aaron-Brown/015cd0f8-db62-40a2-b609-8f44e4f4cfa4

“He’s an explosive player, two year starter there at Hawaii. He was a J.C. guy, Saddleback Junior College, very explosive. He’s a little over six feet, 235 pounds. He runs well, tackles well, tough guy. I mean, real tough guy. That’s the kind of guy that you think has a chance to fill in at a linebacker spot. Worst case scenario where we’re picking, he sounds like a premier special teams fit.” – Coach Jeff Fisher on Brown.

“He’s a tough guy, very urgent, very good as a special teamer, looks like a core special teamer. Our numbers at linebacker were down so he’s going to add depth and we’ll go from there.” – GM Les Snead
