Nothing but net

It’s the middle of a three-day weekend, let’s talk volleyball:

* * * * *

It is confirmed that Drew Durni, a 6-3 outside hitter from Frontier High near Buffalo, will be joining the volleyball Warriors this coming year.

Here’s his highlight video: Drew Durni.

* * * * *

Carrol_Harrison11_8522

Opposite attacker Harrison Carroll has secured his release and is expected to transfer to an NAIA school, where he should receive more playing opportunities. Carroll, who was UH’s primary right-side hitter near the end of the 2012 season, is smart, athletic and, in general, a really good guy and teammate. He ended up being the Warriors’ most efficient back-row hitter, with smashes off the D set. He also was a crafty server. But Carroll is 6-1, and that often led to mismatches, especially on quick transitions, when he was across an opponent’s top left-side hitter. With the return of 6-5 Johann Timmer and 6-7 Taylor Averill, there would have been no guarantees on the number of sets Carroll would have played in 2013.

* * * * *

Unknown-1

California Baptist becomes the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation’s 13th men’s volleyball member this coming academic year. That means the Warriors will play an equal number of MPSF home and road matches. Previously, UH and BYU would play rotating schedules. For instance, instead of a home-and-home series, UH would play two matches at home against UCLA one year and then two matches at UCLA the next. The California schools would play home-and-home series against each other. UH still will be on that rotating schedule because BYU and California Baptist are considered travel partners. But at least it will work out that UH will play six two-match series on the road and six two-match series at home in 2013.

By the way, it’s California Baptist or CBU, but never, ever Cal Baptist.

After winning the NCAA championship, UC Irvine head coach John Speraw has some options. He could:

• Remain at UCI, where he has developed an outstanding program the past decade …

• Or replace Al Scates, who retired after 50 seasons as UCLA’s head coach, at his alma mater …

• Or coach the U.S. national team after the London Games.

Mark your calendar for the UH volleyball camps at the UH athletic complex:

• Camp II (boys and girls, ages 5-12) — July 16-19, from 9 a.m. to noon. Fee: $125 per camper.

• Camp III (boys and girls, grades 4th through 12th) — July 16-19, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.. Fee: $150 per camper.

    This blog is hilarious.

  8. Stephen Tsai May 27, 2012 8:26 am

    Miano always has something going.

I haven’t heard about Dick Tomey’s plans. Or Bianca’s. But it seems the rest of the 2012 staff has moved on to other endeavors.

  9. gigi-hawaii May 27, 2012 8:28 am

Is Tomey a permanent resident of Hawaii, or does he have another residence on the mainland (like Mack)?

In case nobody noticed, I posted the link to the best women’s volleyball site:

those are nice photos of Miano and Wong. Wong doesn’t look Asian, though.

  17. Stephen Tsai May 27, 2012 8:51 am

Kevin Wong’s brother is Scott Wong, who is head coach of UH’s sand volleyball team.

  18. Stephen Tsai May 27, 2012 8:52 am

    Kevin Wong is 6-7.

There are so many new sports at UH-Manoa. When I attended UH in the late 60s, there were only the basic ones. I took hula, swimming and tennis during summer session.

    Good morning everyone!

    Welcome Drew Durni!

  24. Eagle May 27, 2012 9:28 am

It’s gonna take a while to purge “Cal-Baptist” … They’ve been (apparently inappropriately) called that for years…Never heard that respectful distinction before…

Does California-Baptist even have a puddle jumper air terminal or runway that can land a whole VB team at once (without parachutes)?

…AND i still call those ‘upstarts’ “RENO” …

    All Have a Memorable Weekend…

as much as I dislike Reno, would not mind going back to visit the “new” casinos, heard a few closed and replaced by new ones, to ride the “river boat” on Lake Tahoe, and to take the tram up the mountain for a great view of Lake Tahoe.

    Welcome to new VolleyWarrior Durni!

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Best wishes to Harrison Carroll. We’ll miss you.

Welcome to the Warrior ‘ohana, Drew Durni.

California-Baptist, ahhh, just one more team to have “conversations” with!

Eagle – they are in Riverside, so just a bus ride from LAX.

I’m sorry folks but men’s volleyball does absolutely nothing for me. I prefer the women’s game much more, it’s like watching a ballet.

ST – with the departure of Harrison Carroll, the only seniors on the team next season will be Gus Tuaniga, who hasn’t played in 2 years 😈 and Matt Cheape. Did I miss someone?

  40. Ipu Man May 27, 2012 12:16 pm

It says Hawaii’s Big Red was third in the nation with a 4.15 kills per game .

Now he leads the vote with 153 votes to Stanford’s other guy who has 66 votes…

If a penguin is found dead in the antartic, other

members of this strange bird family have been

known to dig holes in the ice, using their vestigial

wings and beaks, until the hole is deep enough for

the dead bird to be rolled into and buried.

The male penguins then gather in a circle

around the fresh grave and sing:

    “Freeze a jolly good fellow”

    “Freeze a jolly good fellow.”

    🙄

  45. Ipu Man May 27, 2012 12:42 pm

Gotta get at least a hundred posts today, no?

  46. gigi-hawaii May 27, 2012 12:46 pm

Is Steve Hunt the guy who was interviewed a lot on local TV news?

I never watch men’s volleyball, but have seen snippets of it on the news. (Channel 4 with Robert Kekaula).

  47. gigi-hawaii May 27, 2012 12:48 pm

    Hope everybody is happy today.

No snide remarks about Josh Donovan, please.

Beautiful weather. But we have the a/c on and waiting for hubby to bring our lunch.

  48. jm2375 May 27, 2012 1:10 pm

btw, Steven Hunt’s opponent in this round is Brad Lawson, an Iolani grad. There are other Hawaii boys in it, but the only one who counts is Steven Hunt.

Enjoyed this article while checking out the BEST VB SITE. Nebraska’s on the move to break the womens vb attendance hold that the Wahine have. Looks like there will be luxury suites in their renovated arena.

  50. jm2375 May 27, 2012 1:14 pm

Can you PROVE that Josh Donovan is being invited to camp just because he’s JD’s son? Did you say that about Justin Clapp too?

Josh Donovan had a knee injury that required surgery.

Do the math. Team consists of 102-105 players. There are only 85 scholarships permitted with 25 initials. That leaves 25-30 players who are deemed “walk-ons”. Perhaps they are saving a scholarship for someone more needy, such as an out-of-state player.

  51. Claud Sutcliffe May 27, 2012 1:15 pm

to #38: Point Loma Nazarene College is on the beautiful grounds of the old Cal Western…

  52. kawika49 May 27, 2012 1:20 pm

#53 why not a suite at the stanly?

  53. Dennis Halloran May 27, 2012 1:24 pm

Cal Western changed to USIU then became Alliant

  54. sports for fun May 27, 2012 1:25 pm

Kawika, I don’t know if the UH athletic department has that kind of vision. The Nebraska gym is rectangular where as The Stanly is round. Maybe The Stanly isn’t configured to be able to have luxury suites. I don’t know…

  55. kawika49 May 27, 2012 1:33 pm

#58 Hire one portagee contractor, he can make anything straight round.

  56. mo808 May 27, 2012 1:38 pm

    59. Nice one! I’m half portagee so I can laugh with appreciation!

  57. wafan May 27, 2012 2:09 pm

If the converse is true then there are going to be suite problems.

  58. Last Call May 27, 2012 2:11 pm

  63. kama krab May 27, 2012 3:05 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

Got a little time to chime in on yesterday’s conversation on Josh Donovan. Seen him play a couple of times and I will say that if it was not for his injury, he would have gotten scholarship offers from schools. Not saying it would have been D-1 but he would have gotten offers. The boy has really good instincts, reads holes very well, great backside pursuit, and descent sideline to sideline speed. He is the type of kid that would make an impact on special teams and work his way into the rotation with a little work on his speed and quickness.

To say that his walk-on invite came on the heels of his fathers position is a little irresponsible and in my opinion is small kind full of it. If you actually watch the kid play you will know that this boy has talent and a good amount of it. I am not saying he is a freakish athlete like a Aaron Brown or a Pisa but the boy got solid football instincts that could translate into a very good college career with a little work on speed and quickness.

Like some have said, look at what Carl Clapps son has done. That boy is not the most athletic receiver we have but guess what, he got the job done and I see the same thing happening for JD’s son.

  64. gigi-hawaii May 27, 2012 3:10 pm

kama: judging from his highlights tape, I have to agree with you. Amen.

  65. gigi-hawaii May 27, 2012 3:10 pm

anyway, OKC is up by 1 pt at the half.

    Hope they win.

  66. kama krab May 27, 2012 3:10 pm

    Oh and guess what,

Just to say that a kid got his chance because his father is really a slap in the face to that kid who also works hard to get to where he needs to be. Hearing crap like this really makes me upset especailly coming from people that do not coach and do not watch football as much as others.

And yes for those that do not yet know, I do coach and when I am not coaching I follow alot of the top prospects just to see how I can help me kids better.

    Sorry for the rant

  67. gigi-hawaii May 27, 2012 3:18 pm

Joshua reminds me of Leonard Peters and Jeff Ulbricht.

  68. jm2375 May 27, 2012 3:21 pm

    well said, kama. thanks.

  69. wafan May 27, 2012 3:32 pm

Congratulations and a hearty Huzzah to UH sailing coach Johnson!

New inductee into the College Sailing Hall of Fame!

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  70. el burro sabio May 27, 2012 3:43 pm

If what I was told was true, the reality is that the only walk-ons under this coach will be invited ones. The coach can run his team as he sees fit; my only opinion is that, if that is true, then don’t hold a walk-on tryout.

  71. Ipu Man May 27, 2012 3:45 pm

Now, I anticipate the Thunder vs. the Heat!!!!

    Young futs vs young futs.

    Only way to go!!!

  75. krump1_AKA_protector May 27, 2012 4:07 pm

    gig-hawaii,

Any team that knocks out the Lakers has made big-time brownie points with me. I truly hope I don’t need to hear any more of Kobe’s sound-bites until next season. As you can tell, I’m NOT a Kobe-lover in any way, shape or form.

Sort of like the Panda Kitchen steak commercial.

    “I can’t take it anymore!”

    “I’m going in!”

    “Oh-oh, Panda down…”

    “Show’s over!”

  80. kapakahi May 27, 2012 5:03 pm

    Like I said before…..

At the end of day, young JD2 is gonna have to prove that he belongs on the practice field with the other Warriors…..just like Justin Clapp clearly proved to his Warrior teammates.

Hopefully young JD2 is also now fully recovered from his injury last ILH season so that he can make the most of his opportunity.

  81. gigi-hawaii May 27, 2012 5:05 pm

    I’m exhausted.

Time to monitor my blood pressure.

  82. kapakahi May 27, 2012 5:07 pm

  83. Slugger May 27, 2012 5:16 pm

    Ipu Man,

I like the penguin story. 🙂

From Josh Donovan’s highlight video, it looks like he brings a good eye for the ball and can wrap up his man & stop ’em. Looks good to me. Coach Chow will sort through the players & determine who stays. I’m not worried.

  84. jm2375 May 27, 2012 5:20 pm

kapakahi – IDK what it means in terms of football, but JD2 was a major contributor for the MPI baseball team this season.

  85. gigi-hawaii May 27, 2012 5:42 pm

When the Spurs were behind, Popovich brought them together and told them, “Play with confidence. Shoot with confidence.”

And from that time on, the Spurs played with confidence… and won the game.

    Incredible.

  86. Derek May 27, 2012 5:50 pm

Don’t underestimate the Spurs. I like the Thunder too. Durant is my favorite. But, I like the way the Spurs play basketball and they are so sound. All 15 players on the roster can play, including Patrick Mills who is from Australia and former MVP of the West Coast Conference at St. Mary’s. Spurs blend experience and youth with the best Head Coach this year in Popovich. Still, it will be a tough series, probably down to seven games. Either way I’ve got a 75% chance of being happy at the end. I like the Spurs, I like the Thunder and I like the Celtics. I don’t like the Heat for obvious reasons, mainly “The decision”. You can’t win a championship on paper. But I admit James is a beast. But, the best team will win and thus I think the Spurs or Thunder will win the NBA title.

  87. kama krab May 27, 2012 5:59 pm

    #81 Kapakahi,

No doubt. At the end of the day he does have to prove that he belongs just like any other player on that field, scholie or walk-on. The point that I was trying to make is who are we to say that he got his chance because of his fathers position with the school. What I was trying to say is look at the video, look at his actual play from games. Once you do that and say to yourself that he does not belong then fine but do not use the fact that he is JD son’s to make your statement.

My opinion from watching his video and seeing him play live, I feel that he definitely belongs and will make an impact before he leaves the school. I’ve seen way worse and there on scholie. Nuff said

  88. gigi-hawaii May 27, 2012 6:00 pm

DereK: I watched that TV show, The Decision, starring LeBron (of course). I didn’t care much for it, but I understood where he was coming from. Who doesn’t want to win the championship???

The Spurs are a great team, but you know what, they don’t have the chemistry that LeBron and Wade have.

Sometimes, this Dynamic Duo reminds me of the Harlem Globetrotters. Lol. Like I said before, they play like poetry in motion. So fluid, so smooth — I love their moves!

  89. kama krab May 27, 2012 6:01 pm

    son’s s/b son

    JD s/b JDs

  90. Ipu Man May 27, 2012 6:35 pm

The Spurs twelve million dollar man, Manu Ginobili (sounds a bit Hawaiian)

pumped 11 points in the fourth quarter to rally the Spurs come back from

    a 9-point deficit in Game 1.

I think he is the key to a championship.

Wonder how he grew up as a kid?

  91. Kekoa May 27, 2012 7:00 pm

Kalm down Kama…we’re with you Bro!

  92. Kekoa May 27, 2012 7:11 pm

WARNING: Anybody else gets Kama’s dander up…will have to answer to his Aunty Diana!

I gotta say this about the JD kid. He knows his dad will always be accused of ‘favoritisim.’ So how much you like bet he will rise above all dat noise and let his actions speak loud and clear?

    Go Warriors!

  93. kapakahi May 27, 2012 7:24 pm

Been watching young JD2 play in the ILH the past 2 seasons.

Also know a couple of some of Pac-5 coaches….who told me that young JD2 is definitely a tough gamer….undersized but still maturing physically.

NEVER said that JD2 doesn’t belong…..just that he’ll be getting a major opportunity to prove himself on the practice field….that others (even some UH scholie players) wish they’d have but won’t be getting. ST and PW4L also know this.

NC and his coaches will ultimately decide whether JD2 belongs or not.

  94. Ipu Man May 27, 2012 7:32 pm

wow…and I thought preacher kids had it tough growing up.

    🙄

  95. Ipu Man May 27, 2012 7:34 pm

I sometimes wonder if Jesus looked half hapa because of His Dad…

Can you imagine all the bullying he had to take as a kid?

FYI….only 5 new walk-ons (Brown, Leatimua, Minns, Ragsdale & Umebayashi) participated in Spring Ball.

The other 24 walk-ons (Adebayo, Bridgford, Bukoski, Cavaco-Amoy, Clay, Damuni, Enos, Eselu, Gomes, Higgins, Hollowed, Johnson, King, Lutu, Mahaulu, McCagg, Monico, Niiro, Paclabar, Pasoquen, Torres-Keohokapu, Williams, Wilson, Van Ackeren) who participated in Spring Ball joined the team under Mack and/or were brought in by Miano.

Just shows how coveted a walk-on invitation by NC to join the UH football roster is nowadays.

“These are the facts of the case. And they are undisputed.”

  97. Stephen Tsai May 27, 2012 8:06 pm

Chow said he wants a leaner roster. He also said he wants to put more emphasis on hitting the mark with scholarship players. If a player is good enough, he should be recruited.

  98. kapakahi May 27, 2012 8:12 pm

    #93,

NEWS FLASH!….which has nothing to do with young JD2.

However, having worked with and for them the past 20+ years, JMHO that “favoritism” is just the culture in which the whole UH administration….both Upper and Lower Campus administrations…..has always operated.

It probably also contributed to why UH recently lost its procurement exemption.

    http://www.bizjournals.com/pacific/blog/morning_call/2012/04/bill-fails-to-extend-university-of.html

Strange timing and coincidence that procurement documents & records were destroyed in the Lower Campus fire which damaged the UH Procurement and Property Management Office (PPMO) portable bulidings in February.

    Hmmmm……

  99. SteveM May 27, 2012 8:13 pm

    All right…I’ll be #99…

  100. kapakahi May 27, 2012 8:14 pm

    Thanks ST!

  101. SteveM May 27, 2012 8:14 pm

    ooops…I wish I were #99… 🙄

  102. kapakahi May 27, 2012 8:21 pm

    ST,

BTW….saw some Rough Riders the other night. Bear, Choppy & Cookie. They say hello!

  103. tommui May 27, 2012 8:21 pm

    Kama Krab: Right on!

” look at the video, look at his actual play from games. Once you do that and say to yourself that he does not belong then fine but do not use the fact that he is JD son’s to make your statement.”

And if the coaches allowed that “JD2 is definitely a tough gamer….undersized but still maturing physically,” he should belong.

Anyone you think should be on the rooster but didn’t make it because of lack of pull? And what did his coaches have to say about the reject?

Name names, show their credentials and if nothing is forthcoming, keep silent.

  104. tommui May 27, 2012 8:24 pm

Celebrated my wife’s birthday tonight – no, not at Maple Garden!

The desserts at Kai’s Inn are terrific. Can type but hard to get up from the chair – burb!

  105. SteveM May 27, 2012 8:30 pm

tom — Happy Birthday to your better half!

  106. kapakahi May 27, 2012 8:32 pm

    #105,

    Like I said before….

NC and his coaches will ultimately decide….who belongs and who doesn’t not. No one else.

But getting the opportunity to prove oneself on the practice field is indeed a coveted opportunity.

Like ST said, “If a player is good enough, he should be recruited.”

  107. gigi-hawaii May 27, 2012 8:46 pm

The numbers are all off because spam was deleted.

What was #99 that you all want?

  108. gigi-hawaii May 27, 2012 8:48 pm

Tomorrow’s promise: No more restaurant food!!!

Tonight, we dined at Tony Roma’s. It was pretty good, but there was too much food.

At the rate we are going, we will never be able to sit together on the airplane. Lol

  109. gigi-hawaii May 27, 2012 8:49 pm

    Happy Birthday, Lois Mui.

  110. jm2375 May 27, 2012 8:50 pm

DPK & homey – da imp lives!

  111. gigi-hawaii May 27, 2012 8:52 pm

whatever happened to homey? Is he waiting for football season before he shows up?

  112. Stephen Tsai May 27, 2012 8:57 pm

It was Chow who said that.

  113. Stephen Tsai May 27, 2012 8:58 pm

    Gigi

    Homey’s been around.

  114. kapakahi May 27, 2012 8:58 pm

Like NC said then, “If a player is good enough, he should be recruited.”

  115. Stephen Tsai May 27, 2012 9:00 pm

If people understood the politics of UH, head coaches don’t need to curry favors from the AD.

  116. kapakahi May 27, 2012 9:00 pm

BTW, USC ranked #1 by ESPN College Football Live’s 2012 preseason rankings…..

    http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=7972576

  117. gigi-hawaii May 27, 2012 9:04 pm

Looks like UH is entering the lions den then.

  118. kapakahi May 27, 2012 9:06 pm

Doesn’t matter what happens off the field. It only matters what happens on the field.

Just saying….that it’s a great opportunity for any player just to get on the field nowadays under NC.

  119. whitey May 27, 2012 9:24 pm

what a challenge to start the season, #1 team in the polls. but am more interested in start of fall practice, who will challenge and rise for positions, and who will be on the travel roster for the first game. Coach Chow is velly, velly different than the previous coaches, so he makes things velly interesting for da warriors and their fans. the huge positive on playing #1 is that only a few get to play them this season and have an opportunity to upset the apple cart.

  120. whitey May 27, 2012 9:26 pm

kapakahi, didn’t mean to get into negatives and i apologize.

  121. whitey May 27, 2012 9:33 pm

tomorrow is not just another day, but a truly special one for all to remember all the warriors who valiantly fought for and defended our freedom. To those families who have lost loved ones or have wounded ones, I salute you and thank you for your tremendous sacrifices. You will always be remembered, cherished, and treasured by this country’s citizens. Thank you very much.

  122. whitey May 27, 2012 9:34 pm

    goodnight.

  123. Ralph May 27, 2012 9:37 pm

ditto. well said in #124 Whitey.

  124. OZ May 27, 2012 9:57 pm

    Kapakahi,

Your conspiracy story sounds great, but if it were true, the fire would have started in the procurement office and not on the other side of the firewall.

  125. kama krab May 27, 2012 10:03 pm

    Sorry Kapakahi,

You know I respect you very much here on the blog but again why the hell do you use JD as your main argument against having his son join the team. Yes his dad is the AD but it is the coaches choice to invite JD’s son. Again what I hate is the fact that you are not giving credit where credit is due and that is to Josh Donovan not Jim. It is Josh who has worked his butt off to get this opportunity not Jim. Like you said above, the coaches thought he was a gamer but needed to mature physically. That’s the same damn thing I said about the boy. Any real coach that’s looks at this boy could tell you the same thing. That’s why we do what we do and that is why we are good at what we do. I don’t usually get mad like this about things but man instead of bringing his dad into this and saying how much more of chance Josh has because of his dad. How bout we just say congrats to the boy and wish him well cause like I said, this kid will make a difference.

And reading between the lines, it seems like he is being recruited if he is getting a spot on the roster. So it seems that Coach Chow does see something he likes.

I going to sleep now because I just had my third child and braddah not sleeping good yet but please know Kapakahi, you are one the people here that I very much respect and look forward to all of your insight but on this one we agree to disagree. Take care all

  126. kama krab May 27, 2012 10:08 pm

And same as Whitey said above,

I am also sorry for the rant just feel really strong about this especially after watching the kids video and watching the boy play. Hope I didn’t screw stuff up with anybody. Take care all and God bless.

Oh and may God bless all those that we have loss for our freedom.

    Mahalo Ke Akua

  127. Stephen Tsai May 27, 2012 10:08 pm

It’s just a coinky dink, but the procurement office is located in the Letter Winner’s clubhouse.

  128. Slugger May 27, 2012 11:07 pm

    Good night all!

    Happy birthday to Lois!
