Northern exposure
The way former UH corner/returner Mike Edwards figured it, playing experience — any playing experience — is much needed this year. That was the thinking behind signing a short-term contract with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League rather than wait for a free-agent invitation to an NFL training camp.
The CFL has two rookie offers: 1) A one-year contract with a team option for a second year, or 2) a two-year contract with a team option for a third year. Agent Michael Hoffman said Edwards chose the one-year deal, a decision that could lead to a quicker transfer to the NFL if he has a breakout season in 2014.
Edwards relinquished his senior year at UH to apply for the 2013 NFL draft. He was not selected, and ended up signing a free-agent contact with the New York Jets. But an injury limited his playing time, as well as provided little video evidence of his skills. After being cut by the Jets, he was invited to work out for a few teams. None of the auditions resulted in an offer.
“He needs to get on the field and play,” Hoffman said. “He understands that. He didn’t want to take the chance of not playing this year.”
With the CFL’s wider field, Edwards will be able to demonstrate his coverage abilities in space.

In the early days of the Stan Sheriff Center, when it was known as the Special Events Center, there were two locker rooms — one for the home team, one for the visitors. The home locker, which was initially designed for women, did not have any urinals. Phase II included the construction of locker rooms. There are now eight locker rooms, including one for officials. (There are no locker rooms for coaches, though.)
The Sheriff Center’s start is a lesson in patience — a virtue that is useful as the Ching athletic complex takes shape. While offices and locker rooms have been certified, there is one glitch. There’s no locker room for the male assistant soccer coach. On the bright side, he gets more exercise using the locker room in the UH athletic complex across Ching field.

Good luck to Edwards in the CFL this year. Playing the CFL is a tricky path to the NFL. Very few guys make it back to the NFL once they choose the CFL. It’s like waving a white flag.
If it were financially feasible for Edwards, I would have advised Mike to wait one more year before opting playing in the CFL. That way, he could potentially workout at UH’s pro day, improve on his numbers from last year, or at least show that he’s in playing shape for scouts to consider when the teams start picking up guys for fall camp.

Interesting story about SDSU and Stephen Rivers. It doesn’t sound as if it would be a mutual fit for either. Rivers is looking for a scholarship that the Aztecs don’t have at the moment. However, there is a possibility that Rivers could be willing to walk-on if he really, really wanted to play there.

I think Edwards has the talent to make a NFL roster. I think his agent is not leading him on a good path. I still question why Hoffman lined up Edwards with the Jets. Where there were already 2 established CBs, and the Jets picked up a CB in the 1st Rd of the draft. I remember looking at the training camp roster and there were basically 8 or 9 CBs competing for 2 CB positions and the Jets already had a good punt returner in Jeremy Kerley. So basically it would have taken a minor miracle for Edwards to make the Jets last year.

It’s like in basketball. I think guys should accurately assess their talents, then try to beat the crowd for European- or Asian-market contracts. Sometimes playing and earning a check are better. Bird in hand, and all of that.

I think a lot of people asked why UH didn’t make a strong push to sign a JC quarterback. So I asked around, and here’s the deal: After a lot of evaluation — and a lot of video watching — the consensus was Ikaika Woolsey was better than any JC quarterback available. He’s got the arm, athletic skills and football IQ. What’s more, Woolsey actually came out of a very good JC program. He attended City College of S.F.as a part-time student during his grayshirt semester.

There aren’t as many opportunities for a drop-back quarterback (Stephen Rivers) as there were a few years ago. Even in the NFL, everyone is looking for the next Russell Wilson or Colin Kaepernick.
it was imperative for chow to bring in another guy. aside from woolsey’s potential everyone else is probably not up to snuff for varying reasons.

My take… If you think that highly of Woolsey, he should have gotten reps this year whether he starts or platoons like other teams do. You can’t base everything off what you see in practice because things need to translate to game time as well. How else do you know what you have unless you see it in action??
Yes SS gave this team the best chance to win. No arguing that But in the end, it still only resulted in 1 win. As a HC, you need to look out for the best interest in the program as well as your job. When you lose your first 7 games, you’re not going bowling or winning your conference. Your goals need to be reassessed. Winning 2 games isn’t going to save your job or make fans think any differently of you.
This isn’t youth sports where you want to win it for the seniors or look out for whats best in your seniors. At some point you need to prepare for next season. They say you get 3 years to to show results in this day and age. Why not throw some of your younger guys out there to gain experience? Doesn’t mean SS has to sit the bench the entire game. Or bench BRendan Daley and Art Laurel for a entire game. But it wouldn’t hurt to see more Woolsey so the coaches have a better idea what they have at QB going into this season. Woolsey might impress at practice but he still didn’t against Fresno. Also came into game for a Wild Cat play in another game and the ball got hiked and hit the WR in motion. Those are small things where experience can pay off…
# 44 – Urban legend – no truth to the matter. I sat innocently on a tree, as if to hug it, especially because it was nice shade, and somehow, yellow journalist and slanderer Stephen Tsai turned it into another matter entirely. I played along out of pity for the host here, and other posters took it and ran. They’ve been obsessed ever since. Kind of sad actually. I am not nearly that interesting.

One win is nothing to celebrate of course we all know, but I think starting SS at the end of the season was the right move, even though probably starting a younger QB would have been smarter for the future in getting someone like Woolsey more experience. Like you said SS gave them the best chance to win, and the program needed the wins badly. They of course were in a lot of close games in the 2nd half of the season that could have gone either way, but had they lost that last game to Army, although it would have been only a 1 win difference, I think it would have had a much bigger impact than we think. Everyone has their opinion, but to me going 1-11 is a lot different than going 0-12.
Patience is a virtue ? Come on Tsai ! Ching Field project is a disgrace such a small structure that took sonogram to build and guess what the contactor still ain’t finished. Poor building project management couples with a incompetent contractor and subs make for waste of public tax money. This is unacceptable. Or should I say normal if UH administrators are involved !
Good point, Andrew. And look at where SS ended up statistically by the end of the season. I’m sure that point wasn’t lost to some of the new recruits we have. The great competition we are headed for at QB is due to the fact that players can see the potential for their own futures. I’m just wondering how Wittek is going to get a good overview of the QB competition after spring practice, for some of the schools he’s interested in.
Plus I really liked that never give up attitude that the football team had. Yanking SS and playing Woosley or whomever for the future would be like giving up on the season. They were obviously not going to win the conference or go to a bowl game but they still they had games to play and they played to win. It wasn’t the most desired outcome but they fought until the end. I think had Chow made that decision also it sends the wrong message to the team. He would be basically saying indirectly that he has given up on that team and already playing for next season.
If one attributes a 1 win season to QB SS’ limited ability when he was leading the team to put up 30 plus point a game, that’s nonsense. It was’n’t SS and the Offense that was losing the games, it was defense and special teams…not getting it done. When UH puts up 50 plus points and still looses, that says it all right there.
54. It’s not yanking… Called platooning. I mean maybe some fans enjoy moral victories but its clear that the team has to be prepared to win for this coming season from a business perspective. Or fans are not going to buy tickets and we will continue to have bigger debt.
I really don’t want to hear excuses personally in 2014 about Woolsey lack of game experience if things go bad. If Woolsey is your choice, he needs to deliver. Hawaii had a chance to give him game experience in 2013 is all I am saying. He didn’t have to start. Fans/consumers don’t want to hear excuses… I as well as most fans on this blog are going to continue to buy tickets and support the team regardless. But I am speaking of those fans who are in the middle and will buy tickets only if the team is performing. We need those fans back.
Hawaii is going to have a good defense in 2014. I have no doubt about it. I just have no idea what to expect of our offense considering our QBs have next to 0 experience and we might get a summer transfer QB who will have very minimal time to get accustom to the new offense and players..
55. Clearly not reading correctly. No one is blaming SS. It’s more along the lines of preparing some of the younger guys who will be important pieces to Hawaii in 2014…
A lot of teams run a 2 qB system in order to get younger guys experience…
Ex. South Carolina. Spurrier was high on Connor Shaw as a FR. He had a proven QB in Stephen Garcia. He platooned in order to give his QB experience. And they were a winning program. Duke has Renfree and played Anthony Boone still. Urban Meyer platooned Tim Tebow when he had Chris Leak. Notre Dame even mixes it up at times.

I agree, if they choose Woolsey it should be because he is the best QB to lead the team to vistory. I personally am not a big Woolsey fan. He has good potential and skills but I’m just not buying into him being the guy for the team. If he turns out to be the starter that is chosen though, I will back him up and root for him 100%.

Platooning is tough though. It can either work really well or can backfire very easily. Like in USCs case, I think he took too long to decide on his starter and playing both in the beginning hurt them more than helped.
59. Hawaii was 0-6… How much tougher could it get…. If Woolsey was such a big drop off to SS, then I think we have our answer as to what we need to do about QB situation in 2014….But my point is if ST says Hawaii is VERY HIGH on Woolsey, then he should be able to go into a game and perform at a high enough level where the drop off isn’t big.

While winning helps put buns in seats, Hawaii is a bit unusual in that we can be winning and people do not create sell out situations, even if the opponent is a marquee one. Look at UH basketball. They are near a 20 win season and the SS is not sold out. And that’s only 10k.
Even if Chow’s teams win, the stadium will not be filled.
It will take more than winning (although it helps, I won’t discount that) to fill venues. The marketing folks have to think outside of the box. Maybe line up sponsors to have a car giveaway at the end of the year, trips to Las Vegas, concert tickets to the next big concert, etc..
The old days in Hawaii when winning filled seats does not appeal to the new generation of “fans”, the old guard will come when winning and grumble and leave when losing, but that marginal fan, who UH wants to make a die in the wool fan needs a different kind of hook to come, a different kind of incentive to stay and a different one to return.
Winning will build a small base, but to fill the venue with new, marginal spectators (not fans), more marketing in a creative way needs to be done. Oh, and that by the way not only takes creative thinking, but risk taking and dollars.

ok, back to regular programming – I think Woosley (sp) should be selected #1 going into Spring and Fall practice and Reilly should be given a copy of the playbook now so he can be up to speed when he arrives in June – he can “visualize” the plays at home, at a field, or where ever he chooses to visualize – even while running he can visualize doing an option play or lifting weights to strengthen his arm ( throwing a deep pass to a receiver )

Buffo: In the old days, we did not have such a thing as pay for view so that fans can sit in the quiet luxury of their living rooms to watch the game and drink cheap beer. Well in the old days when we were going to Honolulu Stadium we could not even get live mainland games on TV. Times are different than before.
Maybe there should be a secondary head count which takes into account the number of pay for view fans that watch each game.
When the schedules tough, people complain. When the schedule is weak, they still complain.

#65 I agree with that point, but back in the day, when we were younger we made sports a big part of our lives. Today’s young people do not see it the same way. Just drive by Moiliili Field of a Saturday and it’ll be empty. When we were kids, any open field was a calling card for a pick up football game (especially when it rained) and baseball season we all went to play. From as young as I remember through HS.
We became the fans because we grew up with this stuff. The young ones don’t do that. I remember once when I first coached what stunned me was that a kid ready to go into a game asked for and got some deodorant and sprayed it on before entering the game. Huh?!?
To be stink and sweaty was an weapon as nobody wanted to rub against you. Today, got to look good and smell good.
Different times, different generation, but old folks are on fixed incomes or maybe don’t get out and around as much. There’s a need to engage the new “fan”, or maybe, the next step would be, no need seats and a stadium, everything can be “streamed” to a mobile device.

63.You don’t need to fill the entire stadium or SS, just get the place rocking. For the stadium it is almost impossible for it to sell out no matter what team was playing (1975-2013), there were only a few games where I think the stadium filled to capacity and those were in the 80’s and early 90’s, I believe (maybe in 2007-2008 also). We don’t need to sell out every game, no MWC or WAC team can fill out a 50K stadium every game, not even Boise (30+), I think the average for Div 1 is around 45K, MWC was at around 30K+, just get more people to the stadium and it will be rocking….remember the Fresno game this year the place was going off and had maybe 14K+ by the end of the “almost” comeback win
Winning does help and is the single most important factor in filling seats. Marketing and gimmicks will bring in people but not to the level of selling the place out and it won’t make them mainstays (maybe some). Yes this generation of fans are different than yesteryears…especially with the comfort of my own home, lua and couch to watch the game on my clear LED TV with replay and record options….not too mention cheap beers and a smoking section not halfway down the entry gates…so what does this all mean….WIN and the seats will start to fill again, the hype will be “to be there in person” versus watching on the TV again, throw in some gimmicks, tail gating events, and fun half time events and things should start to turn….if the team does better, that is. We just got to start Winning!

My friend went to Notre Dame with some ‘rich boys” from Texas who were handed silver spoons from their fathers – unfortunately he was not from a wealth family and from time to time they, Texas rich boys, would call and tell him send $500,000 on this oil venture in South America

78: have you been to Shakey’s recently? what’s the experience? video games/tickets/ and prizes? that MAY have been the hot item say 20-30 years ago, but don’t see the BIG TIME marketing you speak of…as of late Shakeys is down from 200+ restaurants to maybe 50 or so throughout the US (to my count, they’re not doing very good in MARKETING, probably because people rather just eat pizza at home). Like I said, marketing can help, but it won’t turn the turnstiles to equal sold out stadiums, or mainstay “bleed green” clients…you have to WIN, period with and exclamation point, THAT IS the marketing tool right there. that’s all I was saying….not arguing with you as I know many marketing managers who will THINK they can sell a place out, but of them very few if any can Actually sell the place out. Yes the SS, Les Murakami, etc maybe easier due to size, but still you need a winning program bottom line….and I won’t even go into the mess that’s running the UH show…Win and there will be more people in the stands, lose and well….it is what it is.
Professional teams have empty stadiums and they have some of the best marketing pros around….but it’s hard to sell a losing product…
Don’t get me wrong I bleed green….I sit in that seat win or ass whooping. But there are only about 14-17K of us (as can be seen at every home game the past several years), the rest just found other things to do with their money on a Saturday night

Again St Anthony Trojan, not arguing the fact that Marketing can’t bring in new clients and maybe a few mainstays….never argued that point, I totally agree something new needs to happen to get the new young fan base in. I agree having events, tail gate parties, free admission, concerts whatever it is…is a plus to increase turnstiles. But in the end, a winning team will promote way more turnstile counts over the long run, than any losing team with great marketing managers and gimmicks. And really doesn’t have to always be a 10-2, 11-1 type team (although that would definitely help) it can be a 7-6 team but those 6 loses better have been at least entertaining or pretty damn close loses. and we better at least go bowling at our own home bowl….Speaking of bowls-smokeabowl! that’s why i luv the filipino culture. they don’t stick their nose into your business and tell you how to live, but respect and treat you as long as you respect their culture. remember, you are a guest in their country and american attitude ain’t going cut it there. some say money talks, bs walks, but in the philippines, money and bs can get you killed. culture shock occurs when in a foreign country, you think like an american. just go with the flow, baby.
When I think about the Hawaii QB situation, I think about the word “HOPE”. What QB will give us hope that we can win football games? First, eliminate Phillips. I certainly don’t expect to have him win the job. Next, Higgins. He’s played some. Started against Air Force the other year in a 21-14 loss on the road. He’ll give it his best as an incoming senior. I “hope” he does well. Next, Taylor Graham. He’s been hurt a lot. Strong arm, but his accuracy doesn’t grab me. His long passes are too long, and his short passes are often are going toward the ground. Next, Woolsey. Based on last years action, Woolsey didn’t exactly lit up the scoreboard. He was inconsistent throwing the ball and threw too many picks considering how man times he threw it. At this point, nobody has given me a lot of hope that a 6-7 or 7-6 record is in the offing. Wittek. Well, he has the measurables and the publicity and the pub as a recruit coming in. But at USC, he hasn’t shown that he is a big winner. Sat behind Barkley and lost his job to Kessler. There must be a reason there. So, at this point, I don’t want to get my “hopes” up. Then, there’s Beau Reilley. He’s an unknown quantity. We don’t know how he’s going to fare in the fall.
It doesn’t look like a good picture that raises our “hopes” for a successful season. A good QB raises our “hopes” to win games. We can feel it in our bones. In the beginning, Schroeder didn’t give us much “hope.” As he played better last season, he raised our “hopes.” To raise the “hopes” of Hawaii fans, the “new” starting QB has to demonstrate to us that he can make plays. As a 3 year started, Colt Brennan showed us that his accuracy was uncanny and his penchant for throwing touchdown passes at record levels. He played so well for us that we felt we could win every game, and we did in 2007.
With Brennan, even down 21-0 against Washington he and his team still gave us “hope” that we can come back. The rest his history.
The only guy that maybe give me hope, to me, is Reilley. Because we don’t know how he will perform. The other QBs doesn’t me a lot of “hope”. Again, no knock on all of them, but my assessment is based on the lack of demonstrated very good performance and winning. That’s the bottom line. So, I hope Reilley can come in and surprise all of us. If not him, “hopes” for a successful 2014 is diminished and we have to wait for Aaron Zwahlen in 2015 and see if he is the Holy Grail.

if he feels UH should give him he “silver spoon” because of his prior “lofty ranking”, then I do not and cannot have confidence is such a athlete, but who knows what Chow will do.

players who receive play books during spring and fall ball can also make copies and distribute to others including conference foes – not a cool thing to do – violating the “trust” coaches have placed in you is cause for dismissal, if proven true!

3. we understand that it is too late to bring in any candidates at this juncture.

5. we understand that after all the candidates have been evaluated it is then and only then shall we make logical choice.

Congrats OC 16 for holding on the the TV rights. Now I hope you reassess your list of broadcasters. I cannot under stand the reason to have both Artie and Tony do color. Too much talking over each other and one is so superior to the other. I won’t say who is superior IMHO. I also hope they do everything possible to have Kanoa Leahey do as many broadcasts as possible. It’s only a matter of time until he goes national full time. But a game here and there is a treat for Hawaii fans.
Lastly, I love Robert Kekaula but he cannot be so soft on Chow during Inside Access. Liz Chun was a harder interviewer when she had the show. She was awesome and someone should see if she would like to come back and host the show. It’s not a slap on Robert. Just trying to improve the program.

I was talking to someone about Ben Jay’s plan to use the Stan Sheriff Center to compete with Blaisdell for non-UH events to generate additional revenues. I thought, make sense! Then, I heard a rumor that the Stan Sheriff Center is actually leaking and it will be tricky to fix because of the way it was constructed.

Warrior Dave #125 . . . I agree with your comment. I can’t foresee any changes to the broadcaster assignments, because you and I both know how these things work. BUT, I hope they give it an honest look.
Regarding Kekaula on Inside Access, I’m OK with him there. I don’t think Chow is the type to give tough questions any play anyway. He is pretty good at re-directing and being non-responsive at times. I do think that Kekaula adds a nice balance to the show and keeps things in perspective at times when us guys get carried away.
Play-by-play? That’s another story. No disrespect, big guy.
